Good morning, Kurt and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today…

Hi April, thank you for the interview.

MBA: Tell our readers a little about yourself?

KURT: I was previously a financial executive and semi-professional bicycle racer. I graduated Brown University and Columbia Law School. When I retired from finance, I moved to Malibu, which is also famous for it wildland fires . The the first year I was there, a wind-driven fire burned literally to my front door. It destroyed my neighbor’s home and a church on our corner. The next month, an arson fire less than a mile away destroyed 50 homes and caused $500 million in damage. I watched the Los Angeles County Fire Department in action and decided to learn more about firefighting.

MBA:  What made you want to write firefighters mystery novels?
KURT: The Los Angeles County Fire Deparetment has been wonderful. I have had great access. I
was fortunate enough to attend several training academies, ride along with the firefighters and actually see some major fires. People don’t really know much about what firefighters do (other than put the wet stuff on the hot stuff) and I thought it would be fun to write novels about firefighters. Each of my novels concerns a specific firefighting discipline: One Foot in the Black – Wildland Firefighting /Red Flag Warning – Arson
/ Code Blood – Fire Paramedics. Each book deals with an external mystery involving the particular firefighting discipline and an internal mystery involving the firefighter himself. I am currently working on my fourth book calledHazardous Material, involving the HazMat Squad. I maintain an author/firefighter website which has some incredible fire and firefighting pictures, as well as stories from firefighters, which may interest your readers:

MBA: What or who was your inspiration for writing?

KURT: I’ve always dreamed of being a writer. When someone tells me how much they enjoyed one of my books, that is a great thrill. The idea of leaving behind a few novels which will be read and enjoyed is a contribution to the world. Especially at a time when writing and reading seem to be losing favor.

MBA: In CODE BLOOD, your hero, Colt Lewis, finds a women whose foot has been severed and can’t be found. Is there a particular reason this story appealed to you?
KURT: This is based on a true story which a fire paramedic told me about an accident on Pacific Coast
Highway. In a freak situation, a truck hit a metal light pole and sheared it off. As the pole fell, the jagged metal base cut off the foot of a woman standing nearby. When the paramedics arrived it took quite a while to find the foot–it was lodged underneath the engine of the truck. I wondered what kind of story would it be if someone came out of a beachside restaurant with a take home bag, picked up the foot, and took it home and put it in the freezer. That’s the Code Blood story, and it isn’t a comedy.

MBA: Can you tell our readers a few tidbits about your future project(s)?
KURT: I have spent the last few months up in the high desert outside of Los Angeles in a town called Lancaster. It is the HQ of the County Fire Department’s HazMat Response Team. Lancaster is also the home of Edwards Air Force Base (where the Space Shuttle lands) and was also known at the methamphetamine capital of the U.S. My new character Bucky, a HazMat Specialist, gets himself involved with some nasty bikers and some strange aerospace people. Stay tuned!

MBA: With the holidays fast approaching, can you tell our readers what your favorite part of the holidays are? Why?
KURT: I grew up in Colorado and lived on the east coast for many years. I loved the quiet winter landscape during the holidays. Deep powder snow falling and collecting on the ground and the absolute silence. In Los Angeles, I have to be satisfied with Christmas lights dangling from Palm trees, motorcycle riders heading up Pacific Coast HIghway and a drop in temperature all the way down to the low 60’s.

MBA: Now tell our readers where to find you and where your boooks are available?

KURT: My books are available through my website ( < on Amazon and Barnes + Noble in paperback and Kindle, in all the other e-book formats, and can be ordered through any bookstore.

Thank you Kurt Kamm, for visiting with My Book Addiction and More today…
