Good morning and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today!!

SD: Thank you for having me.

MBA&M: Tell our readers a little about yourself?

SD:  Let’s see… I’m a mother of seven, age ten and under. Two of my girls are adopted.  The seventh is actually due in early march. That (motherhood) is what I do most of the day. But of course I love writing, reading… skiing, when I have time. I have been writing since I was a girl and am very excited to get my first book published.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write “Lightning Tree”?

SD:  The story started because I was interested in Italian immigrants and the part they played in forming the pioneer communities in Utah. And when I started looking into the different waves of immigration from Italy to the Salt Lake Valley, I discovered the Waldensians, who were such an interesting group of people to me—they spoke French, lived high up in the mountain valleys of northern Italy, and they had their own version of the Christian religion that differentiated from the Catholic teachings, and so they were persecuted over the years.  So, a lot in common with the LDS pioneers. Also I have such a deep interest in the history of the area of Utah Valley. I’d drive by old buildings all the time and just wish there was someone I could talk to about them.  Finally I decided to write a story and have a reason for tracking down facts, names, family anecdotes.  It has been such a meaningful process to me, getting to know the place I lived for such a long time.

MBA&M: What where the challenges in writing “Lightning Tree”?

S.D.I was (and still am) a little bit frightened about the idea of misrepresenting history by accident. I was so completely thorough—I’d look up every little thing, like, did the city run cross that street?  What was the street called? Was this building built yet?  I wanted to get it exactly right… and accounts differ.  I’ve found personal accounts like journals and histories that say something different from the textbooks. And I tend to go with the histories, the firsthand accounts. So I’m worried about being criticized for historical accuracy but in the end… all I can say is I did my best (and a lot more than I had to, probably) to get everything right.

MBA&M: Why this era?

S.D. I love the idea of writing about a newly budding community. And it fit so well with my passion for the idea of community as family… back when communities were small and somewhat disconnected, you had to rely on your neighbors.  It’s such a different world now. Sometimes we don’t even know our neighbors’ names.

MBA&M: Who is your hero in your life? Why?

S.D. This will sound cliché, but my husband. Without his encouragement and genuine love for the fact that I write, I would not be a writer.  He is so enthusiastic about it. And self-sacrificing. He is a writer too, and hardly ever has time for it. I look forward to the day when he can take some time to write also.

MBA&M: If you could step into a book and that world where will it be and why?

S.D. Harry Potter.  I would love to meet some of my favorite characters from that story. Or maybe Little House on the Prairie; what an adventure those stories portray (and all of them true!). But just for a little while… I love my life, and would miss it.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about Kevin Dobrzynski?

Dr. Kevin Dobrzynski is a Doctor of Naprapathy, nutritionist, and personal trainer who has spent his career successfully helping others lose weight. In 2010 Dr. Dobrzynski’s wife had her thyroid removed due to cancer. Conventional medicine failed to help his wife, but he discovered a natural treatment for hypothyroidism. He is the author of The Hypothyroid Diet, which has helped hundreds of sufferers overcome hypothyroid symptoms.

MBA&M: Overweight people are often perceived as overweight due to overeating, but instead, could they have medical reason for their overweight problem, as a D.N. how do you deal with this issue?

Unfortunately, losing weight is not as easy as just eating less. I know a lot of patients who in fact don’t eat enough. There are many medical issues that can keep people from losing weight; low thyroid function and food allergies/sensitivities are a couple of examples. These two go hand in hand. BTW, I’m a Licensed Naprapath not an MD. I usually start by evaluating thyroid function, then I address food allergies/sensitivities.

MBA&M: My mother, was morbid obese, due to Thyroid issues,as a child I heard the laughter, snide remarks from others about her “hand to mouth disease”.It was so intense that she NEVER want to our school functions or such. It took them years to figure out she was Diabetic also. Of course this was fifty years ago and M.D.’s didn’t know the answer either. How would you deal with this issue, today?

Being involved in natural medicine helps, because I use food first, followed by supplementation. I really work to get to the root-cause of the problem, versus medicating. Also, I do not medicate, that’s a MD’s job. In actuality, I have an advantage because I don’t use medication to suppress symptoms.

MBA&M: What research, did you do to find the right combination for the detox equation?

It was a combination of research and experience working with other doctors and patients. After doing it for years you know what works for most patients.

MBA&M: What do you suggest people take to their M.D.’s to find if they do have a Thyroid issue?

I suggest people monitor their symptoms and write them all down and present these to their doctor. Also, it’s helpful for them to do a basal body temperature reading. This information along with a full thyroid panel will paint the whole picture for the doctor.

MBA&M: Will this diet also work, if you do not have a Thyroid issue?

YES, this diet will work for anyone even though it’s designed for those with hypothyroidism. Think about it…if it helps someone who’s thyroid doesn’t work – meaning their metabolism is lower than a normal person’s metabolism. Then it would work wonders for someone with a normal metabolism.

MBA&M: What are you working on now?

I’m working on a coaching program for those who want more help. I have a lot of requests to help others that live in other states and countries. So, now I can help anyone anywhere because of this online coaching program found at

Good morning, Diane and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today…

DIANE: Thank you so much for hosting me.  I really appreciate this awesome opportunity!

MBA&M: Tell our readers a few tidbits about Diane Escalera?

DIANE: Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, I relocated toSouth Florida, a sultry paradise I instantly fell in love with.  I’m married, have two children and a super cute Dachshund I can’t get enough of.  I write hot contemporary romance, and I’m published with Kensington Publishing and Lyrical Press.

MBA&M: What if anything made you decide to write this genre?

DIANE: I love Contemporary Romance.  It’s what I read and write.  Of course, it has to be sexy.  Okay, hot!  I like to write about things that occur in real life, problems that readers can relate to.  Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and I try not to shy away from the darker side even if it might be unpopular.

MBA&M: What are some of the challenges in writing a Hot Contemporary Romance?

DIANE: Probably the greatest challenge is coming up with fresh ideas.  But that’s where imagination comes in.  For instance, my last book, Dangerous Desire, featured a dogfighting plot, which has never been done in a romance.  In my new release, Still Hot for You, the hero and heroine are already married.  It’s about what happens after the happily ever.  I try to find a unique twist to keep things interesting, but at the same time, the story still has to be sexy.  And romantic!

MBA&M: If you could be any of the characters in “Still Hot for You“, who would it be and why?

DIANE: The heroine, of course!  She gets to be married to a gorgeous man with a long list of attributes, and yet he believes that she is the prize in the relationship.

MBA&M: What are some of your favorite genre to read?

DIANE: I really like romantic suspense.  Dangerous Desire has a strong element of suspense, and it’s one of the things I enjoyed most when I wrote the story.

MBA&M: Who would you contribute your love for writing to and why?

DIANE: Unlike most authors, I didn’t know I was destined to write.  In fact, I worked in banking for several years, but deep down knew that it wasn’t my dream job.  At the young age of thirty-five, my sister died of an illness.  I realized the same thing could happen to me.  There are no guarantees.  I couldn’t waste another moment doing something I didn’t love.  Writing was one of my greatest joys when I was growing up.  I decided to enroll in an intensive course where I learned everything I could about the craft.  It didn’t take long before I left the bank to pursue a writing career.

MBA&M: What 3 top reads do you feel influenced your writing style?

DIANE: It’s hard to zero in on a particular book, but my go-to authors are Linda Howard, Lori Foster and Jill Shalvis.  I devour their books!

MBA&M: Diane, tell our readers where to find you and where “Still Hot for You” is available?

DIANE: Still Hot for You is available at Lyrical Press, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Digital Bookstores everywhere.

Please visit to learn more about my sexy tales.  I love to interact with readers!  Like my fan page on  Follow me on

Diane, do you have anything you would like to add?

DIANE: The hero in Still Hot for You has a sinfully sexy brother and cousin.  I couldn’t let Christian and Nico go without a happy ending.  So… I’m working on two more novellas featuring these delicious men.  Stay tuned for more Latin Heat!

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit with My Book Addiction and More and our readers today….

MBA&M: What made you decide to write romantic suspense?

DEE: I have always loved the combination of heart-pounding run-for-your-life stories and romance.   I initially in love with the genre reading Mary Stewart books.  My Brother Michael and The Moon-Spinners kept me sitting on the edge of my seat rooting for the couples involved.   And on top of that, Stewart showed me that heroines could be strong women, standing on their own two feet and yet still find that elusive happy ending.  So for me, romantic suspense is the best of two worlds.   And when I decided to write—picking the was a no brainer.  Even my very first novel, Everything In Its Time, is at its heart a romantic suspense, even though it’s a time travel set in fifteenth century Scotland.

MBA&M:  What do you feel the appeal of romantic suspense is for readers, especially, black-ops CIA heroes?

DEE:  I think it’s the Alpha male.  The guy who is always going to keep trying.  To push harder.  To make sure that the good guys win the day.  And it’s also I think the idea of watching the heroine reach out to this guy and show him that it’s okay to open your heart.  That some things can’t be achieved by brute force alone.  One of my favorite writers, Linda Howard, always has such amazingly strong heroes.  But no matter how Alpha they may be, there’s something vulnerable about them as well. And that is my idea of a perfect hero.

MBA&M: What is on the horizon for Dee Davis?

DEE: Next up for me, the sixth book in my A-Tac series.  Double Danger.  Featuring A-Tac member and ex-SEAL Simon Kincaid.  Simon is forced to face not only the threat of a terrorist act in Manhattan, but also the return of the woman he once let get away.

Good morning, Eric and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today!!
MBA&M: Tell our readers a little about yourself?
I am originally from Anchorage, AK and recently moved with my amazing girlfriend and her adorable little dog to Seattle, WA. The most important thing about me is that I love the rain and the grey. I am in my early twenties (for another year) and I love to write. It is my favorite past time other than video games. I also love talking to strangers, which I know I shouldn’t do, but I find it fascinating.
MBA&M: What made you decide to write a paranormal romance?
Honestly, writing a paranormal romance sort of started out as a parody of paranormal romance. I thought the silliness and absurdity of a girl falling in love with a zombie would fit my style of comedy and would be something different. However, when I started writing the book, I realized that what I was writing was actually completely realistic. If there truly was a zombie apocalypse, every zombie that you met (or killed) would be somebody’s father, sister, son, husband. And so the book took on a new level of truth, and I began taking the story much more seriously.
MBA&M : What where some of the challenges in writing “Zombie Love”?
The biggest challenge for me was walking the line of comedy, while trying to keep my book from being one big “joke”. The book is meant to make people smile and laugh, but at it’s heart, it is a possibly accurate portrayal of a zombie apocalypse.
MBA&M: What are some of your writing habits?
Headphones!!!! This is the most important thing for my writing. The world has to go away so that I may live in my world, which is essentially in my head. Some times I turn on my noise cancelling headphones with no music playing.
MBA&M: Who is your hero/heroine in your world?
This is going to sound cliche, but it’s my mom. She raised three kids by herself for many years and still to this day is the kindest, most loving person on the planet. She does no wrong.
MBA&M: If you could step into another world or time, where would it be and when? Why?
Oh my gosh, so here comes the nerd side of me. I would give almost anything to live in The Elder Scrolls universe! i have spent so much time in that world as it is, I feel like I could really fit in there and would love nothing more than to be an adventurer and explore dungeons.
MBA&M: What top 3 reads/author,do you feel most encouraged your writing? Why?
Top three are Stephen King, Terry Brooks, C.S. Lewis. These are not necessarily my current favorite authors, but I have been reading books from them for over a decade, so I feel that they really molded not only the way I write, but my desire to create.
MBA&M: Who do you feel your writing is most like, which author?
I am going to be an optimist, and say Stephen King. I like to think that I have a similar style of pacing and way of diving straight into the action, even if that action might be kind of gross.
MBA&M:  What’s next for you and your writing career?
Next up are Books 2 and 3 for the Zombie Love Series!! I am working on the second and am already so happy with where the story is going, and how the characters are changing. After the Zombie Love series is done? Don’t worry, I have plenty of ideas. Not sure which direction I will go yet, but humor keeps me going so everything I do will probably be weird and fun.
Eric, you do have anything else to add today?
I would just like to say thank you so much for your time, and I hope that everybody checks out the book! I would also just like to say thank you to Kyle Morrow for creating the cover art for me. It is my favorite part of the book. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit with My Book Addiction and More today!!!

Good morning,Travis, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today….
Thank you and it’s a pleasure to be interviewed here today. 🙂
MBA&M:  Tell our readers a little about Travis Morgan?
TRAVIS: I was born in Kansas City, I now live in Temecula, CA with my wife and children. I am a 20-year veteran in IT.  In the early part of career, I held positions such as Network & Systems Administrator, Network Engineer and Systems Engineer.  I then moved on to a national college, where I served as Vice President and Institutional Director of Information Technology.
One of my strengths is the ability to communicate with end users who have very little or no computer knowledge.  People often comment how relieved they are when I explain things in terms they easily understand.  I have also owned various computer sales and service businesses over the years, and dealt with residential clients regularly.
I currently suffer from a rare and incurable disease called Usher’s Syndrome – a combination of Retinitis Pigmentosa and hearing loss.  I still have some of my central vision but, for the most part, none of my peripheral vision is functioning – and my night vision is pretty much non-existent.  Just in the past year, my day vision has reduced so drastically that I don’t expect to have any vision much longer.  The added loss of my hearing will make it virtually impossible to communicate except through tactile sign language like Helen Keller. I may have been dealt a bad hand of cards, but I am helping others while I still can … and I love it!
MBA&M:  What, if anything, made you decide to write “Catch Me If You Know How”?
TRAVIS: I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, as well as physical abuse.  I understand the outcome of abuse all too well. Fortunately, I never let it keep me down.  I grew up with such a hatred for those who are abusive, that I found myself desiring to help defend those who are vulnerable.  I have since helped countless parents and spouses discover telltale items on their computers that they had not known, or had suspected but not known how to find proof.  It made me feel good to know that I could really help these people in some fashion or another.
In 2005, I decided to start writing a complete guide to computer eDiscovery and forensics that could be used by virtually anyone.  I quickly found out that my target audience ranged widely in computer skills and knowledge.  I was faced with either writing too difficult of a topic matter, or too simple of a topic matter.  So I put the book on a back burner for a while.  When I picked it up again in 2011, it dawned on me to write different books for different skill levels.  And thus, the basic level “Internet Edition” was born.
MBA&M:  What made you decide to write non-fiction?
TRAVIS: I am a career IT professional, and although I have written since middle school, where I started my first fantasy book, it was something I enjoyed but did not concentrate on.  Over the years, I had written plenty of guides and documentation for IT related issues, but I never wrote an entire book until now. I am often complimented on my writing and ability to convey thought and emotion in my writing, So I guess the answer to your question is, it fell in my lap without my looking for a specific genre to write about.
MBA&M:  What is a typical writing day for you?
TRAVIS: Like many people, writer’s block prevents me from writing as much as I would like to.  When it comes to a topic I am passionate about, however, such as the book, “Catch Me If You Know How – Internet Edition”, I often write until my eyes and fingertips hurt.  I have found that my best writing comes in the evening with some new age music and a glass (or two) of my favorite wine.
MBA&M:  What are the challenges in writing a non-fiction?
TRAVIS: In my opinion, the topic alone is half the battle when it comes to non-fiction.  A story, idea or subject matter is paramount to the readability of a non-fiction, and I was fortunate enough that the subject matter I wanted to write about was an extremely popular and well sought-after topic.  Everyone in today’s developed countries, and even developing countries, have some type of internet access.  In addition, I found there were virtually no books on the market for this subject matter.  To me, it seemed this would be a book high in demand with no competition.  There are other forensics books out there, but none that break it down to simple terms for people with little computer knowledge.
MBA&M:  In today’s world of high tech, what do you feel the appeal of computers, gaming, facebook, twitter and such for today’s young people, instead of going outside and playing in the dirt or backyard?  What happened to fishing, hunting, riding bikes and such?
TRAVIS: Outdoors are for the birds. 🙂  Kidding aside, that’s a pretty open question.  I believe today’s era of “always connected” has its advantages and disadvantages just as much as life in the old days before games and computers. Today, we are much more educated and we can reach a great number of people in virtually minutes.  We also have the resources available to learn and do things we never had available to us before computers.  On the other hand, we are not exercising and playing sports as much as we used to, which has caused a large increase in overweight people.  Although many of today’s games are educational, and require much thought in overcoming obstacles and learning new skills, some are obsessed in gaming and, therefore, do not socialize and meet people.
As with anything, things should be taken into small dosages and moderated. We often see Internet addiction, predators, online relationships, and games of violent nature, as well as excessive game playing, take away from the natural growth of people and society. I think all of this new technology is a good thing – as long as it is not abused.
MBA&M: If you could change anything in today’s world what would it be and why?
TRAVIS: Another very in-depth and open question!  What I would love to change is the availability of disturbing content that to which our children can easily gain access.  I am a firm believer in free speech, however, I wish we had started the .xxx domain extension from the beginning of the Internet so pornography and other vulgar materials would be separated, making it extremely difficult or impossible for a child to find these websites with their browser’s security.  Once a child reaches the age of majority (typically 18 years old in the US), it is then up to that person to view what they wish.
MBA&M: Travis, how did you get into the world of “Computer Forensics”?
TRAVIS: Throughout my career, I have seen many methods of securing computers and data, for legitimate reasons as well as illicit. These methods ranged from simple password protecting logins to encrypted disks, drives, and hardware level-blocking methods.  I also learned a great deal about network security and the risks of hackers breaching firewalls.  So by the nature of my work, I knew not only how to discover a security breach, but to analyze the extent of the damage and access by that security breach.
MBA&M: Travis, tell our readers where to find you and where they can find “Catch Me If You Know How”?
TRAVIS: You can find me on my website at, as well as email me at . Travis, do you have anything else to add?
TRAVIS: I most certainly do!  My book is a work of passion.  I hope that every parent and grandparent reads this book to protect any child in their lives from the vultures on the Internet.  In fact, I am donating 10% of the book proceeds to charities that help at-risk and victimized children.  If there is a serious concern for a child’s welfare and Internet use, and someone does not have the money to buy my book, I ask that they email me at I will do what I can to get the book to them in either eBook format or a printed copy.  My purpose in writing this book was to help people.  It was not for monetary gain, although I admit it will help my family tremendously when I am no longer able to work.

Good morning and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today!!

MBA&M: Tell our readers a few tidbits about yourself?

JOSEPH: I was born in raised in New Jersey, went to college in Atlanta, and then have lived in New York ever since. I love cooking and photography. I’m an avid television watcher. I worked at the Ground Zero recovery site after 9/11 and then as a nanny for five years. I like scotch. Also? I just decided I really like the word tidbit.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write “Probability Angels”?

JOSEPH: A few years ago I decided that my writing was getting too predictable and felt forced. So I decided to do a writing project where I wrote a new short story every two weeks for a year. 26 Stories in 52 Weeks is the catchy name I made up. Anyway, the first part of Probability Angels was one of those short stories. As soon as I finished it I knew I could get a lot more out of the world I had created and I continued pushing it and out popped a book.

MBA&M: Where did the idea of “Probability Angels” come from?

JOSEPH: As I said, I was doing this crazy writing project where I needed a new short story every two weeks. Which was madness. I didn’t have time to be picky with what I was writing, I usually had to go with whatever my first idea was in order to have it finished by my deadline. My initial thoughts when I wrote the short story that grew into Probability Angels were of a man in a tuxedo at a wedding making a deal with the devil. But then I started wondering if it would be possible to make the devil into a good guy. It seemed like fun to try and turn that concept on its head. Well out of that came the notion that often our strengths and our moments of growth come out of the bad times in our lives. So what if this devil character was bringing on bad moments but for a good purpose? In a nut shell that’s what the Probability Angels do. And the man in the tuxedo turned into Matthew, the main character.

MBA&M: What where some of the challenges in writing “Probability Angels”?

JOSEPH: In these books I have characters that can travel instantly to anywhere in the world, so keeping my time zones straight was beyond tricky. I also tried to draw from a lot of different cultures, since they’re basically immortals I got to make up any character back story I wanted and still have them running around in the present day. That part was fun but it was a double edged sword because I wanted to get it right so I had to read up on Japanese culture and ancient Rome, for example, in order to make sure I was flavoring my characters correctly.

MBA&M: Who is your “real life” hero/heroes? Why?

JOSEPH: There are a lot of them. I like anyone who makes a stand for what they believe in or has the courage to create something and show it to the world. Trust me, that’s not easy. So I guess I try and find heroes in the everyday people around me…or does that sound cheesy?

MBA&M: What is on your “To Be Read” pile?

JOSEPH: I’m currently reading even more about ancient Rome in order to prepare for the third book in this series. After that I have a history of clothes to read.

MBA&M:  If you could step into a book and that world where would it be? Why?

JOSEPH: God there are so many. I’d love to be in any world where I could have an adventure that isn’t possible in this one. The Narnia books or Tolkien or something along those lines. If I had to pick one, though? I guess I’d go with Harry Potter, because I’d get to have the adventure but then come back to New York City. I’d hate to be stuck in a world without this place in it.

MBA&M: What is one of your biggest regrets? Why?

JOSEPH: Tough question. I think most of my regrets involve women. If you have to ask why you might need to get out more. 🙂

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where “Probability Angels” can be found?

JOSEPH: All my work can be found at and Probability Angels is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle formats as well as in most every other e-reader’s store.

Probability Angels by Joseph Devon

Matthew knows that he died twenty years ago. He has, after all, been bouncing around New York city ever since, causing mischief and having fun as a supernatural being. But recently some problems have been cropping up: not only is he hallucinating things in garbage cans, but his mentor doesn’t think he’s working up to his full potential, his best friend can’t offer any solace but drunken confusion, and his wife is dying in Central Park. See, the past twenty years haven’t meant a thing because now it’s time for Matthew to make his second choice and become a tester of humanity. And that’s all before the zombies show up. Come explore the world of Matthew and Epp and see what a samurai from Feudal Japan has to do with the course of modern physics, what a two-thousand year old Roman slave has to do with the summit of Mount Everest, and what a dead man from Brooklyn has to do with the fate of the world.

The Dead Celebrity Cookbook – A Collection Of Favorite Recipes Of Hollywood’s Most Beloved Stars

Paperback:384 pages

Los Angeles, CA, January 20, 2012 – For anyone who loves Hollywood memorabilia, is an entertainment junkie, and loves to eat and cook – they will treasure Frank DeCaro’s The Dead Celebrity Cookbook: A Resurrection of Recipes from More Than 145 Stars of Stage and Screen (HCI Books). Frank compiled favorite recipes from some of Hollywood’s biggest names; including Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor, Sonny Bono, Liberace, Michael Jackson, John Denver, Frank Sinatra, Rock Hudson, Humphrey Bogart, and Peter Falk, just to name a few.
Peter Falk 1927-2011
He was one of the great ones–appearing in films as disparate as The Princess Bride and Wings of Desire in the same year, 1987. But no matter what Peter Falk did (and he did a lot), he will always be remembered as the police detective in the rumpled raincoat on the mystery series Columbo. The character, one he played for more than thirty years beginning in 1971, is one of TV’s most indelible portraits. Among Falk’s most beloved films were the cult hit The In-Laws, the one-two Neil Simon punch of Murder by Death and The Cheap Detective, and six pictures with his buddy, the director/actor John Cassavetes, including the 1974 classic A Woman Under the Influence. The Emmy- and Oscar-nominated actor published his memoir Just One More Thing in 2006, and it wasn’t a moment too soon. Falk was diagnosed with dementia two years later. Just one more thing: His pork chops are as toothsome as he was.
Peter Falk’s Pork Chops 6 pork chops
1 medium onion, finely chopped
 ¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup white vinegar
Salt and pepper, to taste
 1 teaspoon thyme
1 cup water
½ cup liquid from jarred vinegar
peppers 1 cup (or more) vinegar peppers
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Preheat oven to 350°. Brown pork chops in olive oil in a heavy frying pan and remove to a casserole. Cook onions until translucent in same oil and add to casserole. Deglaze pan by adding white vinegar and stirring up all brown bits. Add to casserole along with all remaining ingredients except vinegar peppers. Bake for 1½ hours. Add vinegar peppers and cook 15 minutes more. Remove pork chops and peppers to a warm serving plate. Add 2 teaspoons corn starch to pan drippings to make gravy. Pour over pork chops and peppers and serve.

Good morning Katherine and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today….

MBA&M: Tell our readers a little about yourself?

KATHERINE: Hmm. About myself… I was born in Hollywood, where my father was a staff writer for Cecil B. de Mille, I grew up loving the stories from the movies’ researches, things that never got onto the screen. Real history seemed so much more interesting than fictions. The screenwriters were not so entranced with the research assistance the often had. I recall that the Indian advisor on the film “Unconquered”, whose name was Chief Rain-in-the-Face, they referred to as Chief Stick-in-the-Mud.”

MBA&M: Where did the idea of “Montfort” come from?

KATHERINE: Actually, I was escaping from the demise of my fine art print publishing company by writing about fairies in a garden in Salisbury Cathedral Close. I kept coming to the year 1258 and thought I really ought to know something of what was happening in England then. So I hauled out my old Encyclopedia Britannica, and there was an article on “the Barons War” led by Simon de Montfort. I looked up Simon, and found an article that seemed peculiarly negative. Perplexed by my reaction to the article, since I knew nothing of this person and who was I to judge the Britannica, the matter lingered in my mind.

About a week later, attending the reopening of my local public library, the Ottendorfer, on New York’s Second Avenue, I noticed, at a distance from me, a set of books in green bindings. Going to them and taking one at random from the shelf, I let it fall open. The book opened to a page describing Simon’s death at the battle of Evesham — from the point of
view of someone who thought very highly of him. I decided the next thing I would do was research the life of this man who was not well known but could evoke such opposite responses.

MBA&M: What do you feel the appeal of “Simon de Montfort” is to your readers?

KATHERINE: It’s an extraordinary, real story of adventure. Simon’s life was a series of dramatic reversals in the extreme, riddled with battles — he once led 100 English knights against his best friend Saint Louis’ army of 30,000 and won the battle. Another time he engaged a whole army single-handed because he was a mile ahead of the troops he was leading —  they were still on the far side of a hill. You don’t get action much better than that.

And there is intrigue, complex relationships that fester over years in the bottled-up society of a royal court. In a work this long — Montfort is four volumes and a total of 1,585 pages, you get something of the effect of a series where the audience knows the characters so well that nuances become potent.

But on a deeper level, this is the story of how modern democracy first came into being, and an interpretation of the life of the man who made it happen.

I say interpretation because, while I’ve been at pains to follow what my research into the original 13th century documents record, those documents, like any eyewitness reports, can be at odds with one another. One must chose what to follow, consider it in light of the culture of the period and the people’s past behavior, and choose the meanings that seem most consistent and sensible for each event. This is not material that offers simple “facts” but that, for the most part, reflects the views of partisans who loved or hated Montfort.

MBA&M: I see “Montfort” is a series. Tell our readers how many books are in the series and a little about them?

KATHERINE: There are four volumes — of what is actually a single book.

The first volume, Montfort The Early Years 1229 to 1243, deals with Simon’s arrival in England from France (he arrived as a French youth with an old Norman claim on the earldom of Leicester.) He is befriended by King Henry III and begins a stunning military career by fighting the Welsh. Romance is a major issue, ultimately causing Simon to flee England with his pregnant wife and young baby, and go into exile, then on crusade. It is in Palestine that his military fame becomes so great that Henry must forgive him what he suspects is the most treasonous of crimes in order to gain his service in fighting France.

I differ most from other writers in this book, but I always base my views on an in-depth consideration of the documents of the period — rather than the works of modern historians. To aid the reader, each book is supplied with a thorough, scholarly bibliography and an Historical Context section that amounts to footnotes with source references and also small articles that might be of background help, such as the history of the city of Leicester prior to Simon’s arrival.

When I embarked on researching and writing Montfort, I sought the help of my history professor, Dr. Henry Pachter, and then the guidance of Dr. Madeleine Cosman, founder of The Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the City University of New York. I traveled to all the places Simon went (except those in Palestine) and studied the original documents in the Bibliotheque Nationale and London’s Public Record Office and British Library.

The second volume, Montfort The Viceroy 1243 to 1253, deals with the period when Simon was forced by King Henry to bring the barons of England’s French duchy of Gascony back into submission. Developing the knowledge of how to dominate a country with only a small force at his disposal, Simon learns the skills that later will enable him to conquer England for the Parliament. But that is a future unforeseeable as yet, as the Gascons entangle him, and persuade King Henry to accuse his own Viceroy of treason. Battles, connivings and courtroom drama galore.

In the third volume, Montfort, The Revolutionary 1253 to 1260, Simon has managed to survive Henry’s ill will again, but has been sent out of the way as England’s ambassador to the Court in Paris. He’s quite content, life in his home environs is good — until Prince Edward, the heir to England’s throne (and perhaps Simon’s natural son), commits an atrocity and Henry sends the boy and his friends, ill armed and bereft of adequate military training, to fight the battle-hardened Welsh. Raising a mercenary army of his own in France, Simon goes to the boys’ rescue.

In England again, Simon is drawn into a determined effort by a small group of lords to resist the king’s rule. Vowing to support one another, they force King Henry to permit a meeting of the lords and clergy at Oxford, where they will be free from Henry’s ruthless pressuring. The idea is that there they will come up with the taxes Henry demands, but instead they frame The Provisions of Oxford, a document that outlines the form of the first modern democracy, including representatives elected by the common, and with power over the Crown. Simon, as the one man responsible for putting this new government into effect, exposes himself to charges of treason again.

Volume IV, Montfort The Angel with the Sword 1260 to 1265, begins with Simon’s second trial for treason — this time held in France and judged by Queen Margaret. He succeeds, with amazing sange froid and Gallic humor (I use the actual trial notes for the dialogue) in turning the king’s accusations to comedy and Henry is forced to withdraw the issue.

But an odd thing has been happening. The common people in England have come to believe that the creation of the Provisions of Oxford and the establishment of a democratic Parliament (which King henry has succeeded in suppressing) mark the beginning of a new thousand-year World Era: the Age of the Holy Ghost, when kingship, nations and the Church will dissolve into a single world society, led by a government elected by the common people. And the people believe Simon to be the Angel with the Sword heralding this Apocalypse.

Simon, considering these ideas heresy, is eager to return to Palestine, but he is persuaded to go to England secretly and see the forces gathering to reestablish the Parliament. At Oxford he’s drawn in by the earnest commitment of the Parliament’s partisans and agrees to lead them. “It’s as well to die here fighting faithless Englishmen, as to die in Palestine for Holy Church.” (actual quote.)

Miraculous victories follow; all England and the royal family are in Simon’s hands as he re-establishes elective government and tries to regain peace from the turmoil of peasant insurrections. But the lords are jealous of his power.

Banding together against the very government they helped to create through the Provisions, and led by Prince Edward — who fears to commit the sin of Absalom by raising his hand against his father, King Henry — they recapture the king and defeat Montfort’s modest guard at the battle of Evesham. Simon is killed, his body desecrated, but where his torso is found by the monks of Evesham Abbey, a new spring flows with miraculous healing waters. (The spring can still be found on Evesham’s field, in a spot not unlikely to be where Simon died.)

A cult arises that worships Simon as the Angel with the Sword, or perhaps the Risen Christ. To suppress it and it revolutionary doctrine, King Henry makes it a hanging crime to speak the name Simon de Montfort.

MBA&M: When you started researching “Simon de Montfort”, what attracted you to his story and why?

KATHERINE: What attracted me was that the story of this man, so key in the development of the form of government shared by most of the world today, was so unknown, and that in the few modern sources I could find he was usually abused. I began my research in 1977 and have spent 34 years at it.

MBA&M: Who do you feel is the greatest hero, other than Simon de Montfort? Why?

KATHERINE: Greatest hero in general? Well, since I’m fairly committed to Western culture I have to say Jan Sobieski for the battle of Vienna and/or John of Austria for the battle of Lepanto. Had they not won those battles,  Islam would probably have prevailed over Europe. But, then, Admiral Ho is pretty interesting too, for sailing his armada of massive junks up the Red Sea and opening the Arab-Chinese trade.

MBA&M: Who is your greatest hero, be it person, character or animal? Why?

KATHERINE: Of course I have to say Simon de Montfort — for giving us the template for an actual, working democracy.

MBA&M: Which character in “Montfort” do you most identify with and why?

KATHERINE: I don’t think I identify with any of them. Exploring the personality of an intelligent, highly educated man who also kills people in hand-to-hand combat, someone whose life and expectations are so very different from my own, has been fascinating — and has held my attention for 34 years,.

MBA&M: Can you tell our readers what scene in “Montfort” most stands out to you and why?

KATHERINE: That changes with my mood from day to day. Right now it’s the scene in Montfort The Viceroy when Simon and his wife attend the wedding party of Prince Richard. Customarily a traveling lordly household took their furniture along with them, and in this scene a number of grand, curtained beds, containing some of the most powerful lords of England and their wives, are set up in one room with ribald conversation resulting.

But of course, the scene of the Battle of Evesham was the greatest challenge. We know exactly what happened and when, and that there was a terrific rainstorm throughout much of it. Capturing the full horror of the day in words — for that matter even facing up to having to write the scene after so many years spent with Simon — was so stressful that I pounded on my laptop’s keys so hard I mashed the motherboard. My computer got through the scene and saved it but never functioned again.

MBA&M: What’s next for Katherine Ashe?

KATHERINE: A book titled The Fairy Garden that I was writing when I discovered Simon — that book associated with the garden at Salisbury Cathedral that sent my on my first inquiries into the 13th century. I’m in process of doing a final edit. Then, after it’s in print, perhaps a book on Simon’s son Guy and Prince Edward.
