Book Description (from amazon)

Lucy Jorik is a champ at not embarrassing her family—not surprising, since her mother is one of the most famous women in the world. But now Lucy has done just that. Instead of saying “I do” to the most perfect man she’s ever known, Lucy flees the church and hitches a ride on the back of a beat-up motorcycle with a rough-looking stranger who couldn’t be more foreign to her privileged existence. At his beach house on a Great Lakes island, Lucy hopes to find a new direction . . . and unlock the secrets of a man who reveals nothing about himself. But as the hot summer days unfold amid scented breezes and sudden storms, she discovers a passion that could change her life forever.

~CHARACTER GUEST POST AND REVIEW~ DILRUBA Z. ARA~ A LIST OF OFFENCES…..

Pump-Up-Your-Book

A List of Offences banner

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO TWO SPECIAL PEOPLE, AUTHOR,DILRUBA Z. ARA, AND CHARACTER OF “A LIST OF OFFENCES”,DARIA……

~FIRST UP IS DARIA, character from “A LIST OF OFFENCES” ~

Welcome Daria, to My Book Addiction and More, what a great honor to have you with us and our readers today!

###

My Name is Daria.

My name is Daria and A List of Offences is my story. The writer has tried to narrate why I had to make a choice between my personal happiness and my family’s honour. You might think that A List of Offences is just my story. But you are wrong. It is a story of numerous girls and women in the subcontinent who are being repressed, and have been suppressed for ages, by their families. I represent all those women.

I was born in a lush village in Bengal, where people pass their time gossiping, taking pleasure in other people’s misfortune. My birth whetted their fantasizing because of the colour of my hair, which was white‒ the midwife lost control of her bladder at the sight of it. The villagers predicted that no one would ever marry me. You see, there is no fate worse than being declared unsuitable in the marriage market. Girls are born to be married, to become mothers and then mothers-in-law, in my neck of the woods. If you fail in the marriage market, your parents will lose face in their community. Your siblings will be shamed, and your younger sisters in their turn might fail in marriage market.

So a girl must do everything in her power to prove herself suitable for marriage. Families usually hide the girl away if she has any shortcomings. As for me, even though my hair colour became normal with time, my mother forbade me to speak of the circumstances around my birth. She also taught me many other things that were deemed good in our community.

I tried to live up to her expectations, but then I met the handsome Ali Baba, a city boy who had come to our village with my best friend, Mizan. Ali Baba took my breath away. I fell madly in love with him and, fighting my parents, I married him. I believed that people in the city wouldn’t be as narrow-minded as in my village. But I was wrong. His family was pathologically tight-knit and refused to accept me. My mother-in-law, aware of village customs, had me cornered like a caged beast. It became an abusive marriage. I couldn’t return to my family as a divorced girl. My mother wouldn’t let me. She said it would bring shame upon the family and it was my duty to make my marriage work no matter what. I tried to bear the pain with dignified silence, until I got my own daughter…

Thank you Daria, what an amazing story. What courage you shown the world! Thank you for sharing your story!

A List of OffencesAbout the Book:

Daria, the heroine of the book is born under unusual circumstances that cause the people of her small village to gossip; yet as she grows she becomes an intelligent, sensitive and spiritual beauty that one feels is destined for a perfect life. After a flood, a boy is found on the bank of her river. Daria’s parents adopt the boy, and Daria befriends him. As they grow Daria begins to inhabit Mizan’s dreams and thoughts, but a sudden meeting with anglophile Ali Baba brings everything crashing down around Daria. She forgets her upbringing and falls madly in love with him and after her hasty wedding, she moves to Baba Lodge and is brought into the suffocating life of Ali Baba and his family.

Here she lives a life unloved and psychologically abused until she gets pregnant. Now she begins to hope that finally her potential for love, luck and happiness will be realised through her new-born child. Yet relations between Daria and her in-laws deteriorate further. Genre: Women’s Fiction

Source: Received for an honest review from the author and/or publicist

MY THOUGHTS:

A LIST OF OFFENCES by Dilruba Z. Ara is a powerful Women’s fiction set in Bangladesh. This is the story of Daria, born with silvery hair, she is considered to be an ill-fated omen for her family and her village. With deep-rooted traditions, superstitions, ancient beliefs, oppressed women, and customs,Daria must make her own way, find her own destiny, and her own integrity.  Defying her parents she marries a young anglophile lawyer, Ali Baba, she soon learns life is a challenge when she realizes her new mother-in-law resents her. Faced with traditions and customs of the Bengali people, when she becomes pregnant with her daughter, she realizes their ways are not her own,she strikes out to make a better life for herself and her child. What courage Daria, shows! A compelling and powerful story on the life of a dysfunctional relationship, culture, and family. “A List Of Offences” voices what so many woman young and old, alike face in different parts of the world. A complex, heart wrenching story. This is not just the story of one woman but the story of many women,it will defy race, culture and religion. If you enjoy reading stories of other countries’ customs, and traditions, than you will enjoy “A List of Offences”. I would recommend this title for women everywhere. Received for an honest review from the author and/or publicist.

~GIVEAWAY AND INTERVIEW~ ALYSSA LINN PALMER,THE PARIS GAME….

~The Paris Game (Le Chat Rouge Series #1)~

BY ALYSSA LINN PALMER….

~RELEASES TODAY~

The Paris Game - Alyssa Linn Palmer

AND

WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE THIS TALENTED AUTHOR WITH US TODAY…..

SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO….

WELCOME ALYSSA!

MBA&M: Welcome, Alyssa! Please give our readers some insight into the mind and life of Alyssa  Linn Palmer?

ALP: I’m afraid my life isn’t too interesting. When I’m not at my day job, I’m writing, or editing (freelance), or trying to catch up on my reading or TV watching. (I’m especially fond of the series “Case Histories” with Jason Isaacs.)

MBA&M: What was your inspiration for writing “The Paris Game”?

ALP: I’d had a bit of a fascination with Paris/French culture for a few years, but it really exploded (and my first ideas for the book came to fruition) after I visited Paris in 2003. We took in some jazz at a famous jazz club called Le Bilboquet, and it all started from there. I really wanted to go back to Paris, but for a long time I couldn’t afford it, so writing about it kept me happy.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite character to write and why?

ALP: I don’t know if I could answer with just one. I loved writing Marc because he was so perfectly imperfect (as my friend Cathy Pegau put it), a successful art dealer, talented musician, but also morally questionable, but I also loved writing Sera (again, perfectly imperfect), a woman who resorts to turning tricks to pay off a debt. However, for sheer personal amusement, writing the character of club owner Monsieur Royale has to take the cake. He needed to be physically and mentally repulsive, so I had a lot of fun with him.

MBA&M: What was the worst scene for you to write? Why?

ALP: Probably the fight scenes. I’ve never been in a fight myself, not since I was a kid, so it isn’t really something I’ve had experience with. It’s hard to make it seem realistic, but to also keep the action moving. Those were the scenes most edited.

MBA&M: Why Jazz, gangsters, a wager and Paris for your plot and setting?

ALP: I love jazz, for one, particularly the classic jazz, the “hep cats” from the 1930s, like Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael. Gangsters are fascinating because by definition they’re on the wrong side of the law, and what they do can be violent and unethical, but they often have a moral code of their own that is as strict as anything society has. The wager was inspired by reading ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ by Laclos, the classic French epistolary novel. It’s one of my favourites.

MBA&M: What advice would you give to any new authors?

ALP: Work hard, write every day if you can. Learn the craft, take workshops, maybe join a writing group, find critique partners. The first draft might be all you, but the revisions are easier when you have someone else looking at your manuscript.

MBA&M: In today’s world of internet, where would you advise new authors to start first in promoting their stories?

ALP: I think the best sort of promotion is to keep writing. Write more, give your readers something to move on to when they’ve finished reading your first work. Rinse, repeat.

MBA&M: How, where can our readers connect with you and where may they purchase “The Paris Game”?

ALP: They can find me on Twitter (@alyslinn), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/AlyssaLinnPalmer), or on my website http://www.alyssalinnpalmer.com. The book is available from Amazon currently, in trade paperback (http://www.amazon.com/Paris-Game-Rouge-Series-Volume/dp/1484834828/) and ebook (TBA). It will be available from other retailers soon.

Alyssa, what a pleasure to have you with us today and our readers! Do you have anything you would like to add?

ALP: I’ve always been of the opinion that publishers should offer a free ebook when you buy a paper book, because often I’d like to have an ebook for portability, but the paper book for my collection. So, I have put my money where my mouth is. If you buy the trade paperback of The Paris Game, you can email me and I will send you an ebook in the format of your choice.

On the darker side of Paris, it’s dangerous to not pay your debts…

A singer in a jazz club past its prime, Sera Durand must come up with thousands of euros to pay back her boss, a ruthless gangster.  A confrontation with her ex, an art dealer profiting on the wrong side of the law, leads her into a questionable wager, but one that could solve her problems.

Marc Perron knows a winning proposition when he sees one. Seducing a shy young woman of Sera’s acquaintance will be the easiest thing in the world, and the prize, to have Sera in his bed once again, is worth the chance of losing a sizable sum. What he didn’t expect was the depth of Sera’s desperation.

When one of his deals goes awry, Marc’s solution could cost them more than money…
