Join Andy Gavin, author of the Young Adult Time Travel/Adventure novel, Untimed!

Charlie’s the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, his own mother can’t remember his name. So when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don’t take him seriously. Still, this isn’t all bad. Who needs school when you can learn about history first hand, like from Ben Franklin himself. And there’s this girl… Yvaine… another time traveler. All good. Except for the rules: boys only travel into the past and girls only into the future. And the baggage: Yvaine’s got a baby boy and more than her share of ex-boyfriends. Still, even if they screw up history — like accidentally let the founding father be killed — they can just time travel and fix it, right? But the future they return to is nothing like Charlie remembers. To set things right, he and his scrappy new girlfriend will have to race across the centuries, battling murderous machines from the future, jealous lovers, reluctant parents, and time itself.

The Perfect Vacation

Summertime always turns my thoughts to vacation — whether I can actually afford to take one or not. Vacation means one thing for me — getting to read as many books as I want — preferably while lying on the beach and having some gorgeous hunk bring me umbrella drinks and fresh fruit. <G>

When I was a kid, we lived out in the country. There wasn’t a lot to do, my parents couldn’t afford camp, and I wasn’t into sports. I spent whole summers in the tree house or on the porch, reading. I read everything, from the complete Nancy Drew, to historical romances I sneaked out of my mother’s dresser drawer.

Now that I’m an adult, too often I have to sneak books around deadlines and other obligations. But when I go on vacation, it’s all about books. I used to pack suitcases full of paperbacks for a week at the lake or the beach. Now I load up my Nook.

Though I enjoy reading all kinds of books, on vacation I favor romances and light mystery. Romantic comedy, romantic suspense, even Regency historicals — romance for me is the perfect escape.

So what about you? Do you prefer a more active vacation, or do you want a reading getaway? What’s your favorite type of vacation read?

MBA&M:  Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

BARBARA: I’m from New Zealand where I live with my husband and four kids. My husband’s a winemaker (I was hoping for a chocolate maker but learned to love wine too….) and we’ve lived in different parts of the world together. We currently live in the wine region of the South Island of New Zealand which is stunning.

MBA&M: Tell us a bit about your family?

BARBARA: I have twin girls who are 12 and twin boys who are 9. The girls are identical, which is supposed to be a random thing, and the boys are fraternal (non identical) which is supposed to be genetic. My doctors have told me that the chance of having identicals then fraternals in consecutive pregnancies is about 70,000 to one….I hit the jackpot!

MBA&M:  What do you do when you are not writing?

BARBARA: I teach part time and I do all the general running after kids that most mums do. We have an enormous car as my kids always seem to have at least one other friend in tow each so we’re quite a sight around town.

MBA&M: When did you first start writing and when did you finish your book?

BARBARA: I started writing when the first set of twins was born. We’d just moved towns and I knew no one, had no family around, so was pretty housebound. I could only write at night then as there always seemed to be one baby up during the day. I found writing to be such a great break from the hard yards of being a new parent that I really got into it. I think it took me about a year to write that book, a romantic suspense which will never see the light of day!!

MBA&M: How did you choose the genre you write in?

BARBARA: I’ve always loved to read romance and I found the category length books ideal to read when my kids were tiny. The satisfaction of finishing a story was great. (The fact that most romances didn’t have kids in them was a great break too!)

MBA&M:  Do you work with an outline, or just write?

BARBARA: I used to just write but now I tend to work with a bit of an outline. I usually know my characters and their backgrounds, and something about what’s gong to keep them apart. I love using different settings to bring out different aspects of my characters so I’ll have thought carefully about that too.

MBA&M: Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

BARBARA: Dishing up Desire is about appearance and how it can have a huge impact on who we are and what we believe about ourselves. Kirin Hart has built up a cooking empire based on wholesome food and a wholesome lifestyle. Her image reflects that. When she’s accused of sexual harassment by a junior staffer she needs the services of image consultant and ex-international model Blake Matthews to help her improve her image.

And it’s not only Kirin’s image that’s about to be flipped. Blake might be very easy on the eye, but there’s a whole lot more to him than meets it. As Kirin starts to look beneath his smoldering looks and rugged charm, there are a few surprises in store, and Blake’s belief in what he sees in the mirror is one of them.

MBA&M:  Have you published any other books??

BARBARA: My first book, Contract for Marriage came out in September last year and my next book Last Chance Proposal will be out in January from Entangled Publishing. It’s a Christmas story set in the Southern Hemisphere so the holiday celebrations are at the beach!

I have an e-copy of an earlier book, Contract for Marriage to give away to one lucky commenter, and at the end of my blog tour we’ll be drawing the name of one commenter from all of the blogs to win a deluxe “Dishing up Desire” chef’s apron and a $50 Amazon gift card!

Only problem is Blake wants more than to make her over…
Kirin doesn’t need a makeover—her fans love her as she is. But she could lose everything if the sex scandal and reputation that has followed doesn’t get quashed right away. Kirin agrees to let model-perfect Blake work his magic for two weeks, but things get complicated when she can’t deny the way her body flares to life whenever he’s near.

Barbara DeLeo PhotoAuthor Bio

Barbara DeLeo’s first book, co-written with her best friend, was a story about beauty queens in space. She was eleven, and the sole, handwritten copy was lost years ago, much to everyone’s relief. It’s some small miracle that she kept the faith and is now living her dream of writing sparkling contemporary romance with unforgettable characters.

After completing degrees in Psychology and English then travelling the world, Barbara married her winemaker hero and had two sets of twins.
She still loves telling stories about finding love in all the wrong places, with not a beauty queen or spaceship in sight.

Fantasy Adventure / Religious Author…..

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about yourself?

Hi, howdy and yo! I’m C.S.R. Calloway, and I go by Chance (my first initial) and Scissor (which is apparently what my first three initials sound like sounded out). I travel a LOT, being raised on both coasts and traveling outside the U.S. to about fourteen other countries. I dance more than I travel, and I sing more than I dance. Knowing me is a taxing experience.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration for writing “Peculiar,INC”?

This started out as a sixth grade Language Arts project. My friends and I imagined what would happen if we teamed up with Greek gods and they gave us super powers. As time went on and friends moved and changed and I discovered my overused feeling of abandonment, I extended the story, changing characters and developing powers. Then one day, in college, I thought “What if it happened today? Instead of it beginning in the sixth grade, what if it started now?” And the creativity kicked into high gear.

MBA&M: Which was your favorite character to write about and why?

Kim, absolutely. She taught me so much about perception vs. reality. I went to high school with an army of Kims. I grew up with Kims. This book helped me understand them. Several years too late, I might add. Plus her humor is just odd.

MBA&M: How many book will be in
“The Charismatic Chronicles” series?

I’m leaning towards four right now. I have some short story ideas because any universe is potentially endless, but the actual Chronicles are sitting at four right now.

MBA&M: What three words would you use to describe this story?

“exploring” “relatable” “fun”

MBA&M: What scene stands out the most to you and why?

The first time Justus uses his powers in a fight was huge for me, but my absolute favorite scene is the awkward conversation between Kim and her mother Delia in the kitchen. The way Delia goes about having the college prep talk is so awkward and funny, I still laugh when I read it. It shows why Kim’s humor is so unique.

MBA&M: If you could have dinner with any character, real or fiction, who would it be and why?

Athos, the Musketeer. I’m always struck by his intensity, privacy and suppressed emotion. You can infer several of my personal problems with that response.

MBA&M: What do you hope your readers will take away from “Peculiar,INC”?

Golly. That it’s okay to be weird or strange or gifted and to have weird or strange or gifted friends, because everyone’s weird or strange or gifted to somebody else. What is most important is to have purpose.

MBA&M: Now, Chance, please tell our readers where to connect with you and where they may purchase “Peculiar,  INC”?

I’m available day in and day out at CSRCStorys.com, alongside many of the characters from The Charismatic Chronicles. Also tweet me @CSRCStorys and Facebook me at CSR Calloway. Currently you can purchase Peculiar, INC through Amazon and iTunes. Any updates will be posted on the site. Thanks so much for having me!

Dorothy Kunhardt’s whimsical children’s book Junket is Nice, which is being published in July 2013 by The New York Review Children’s Collection.

This book, which was first published in 1933 and has been out of print for decades, was Kunhardt’s first book published prior to her hugely successful Pat the Bunny.  Called “A rare book of irresistible nonsense” by the New York Times back when it was first published and recently featured again in the New York Times Dining section (6/18/13), this sweet tale of a man with a red beard eating so much Junket that passersby wants to know what he’s thinking about as he eats this sweet dessert will delight readers young and old with its guessing element.   Is he thinking about a kangaroo jumping over a glass of orange juice or a pig taking a cold bath?  The only person who knows the real answer in this silly yet poignant picture book is a little boy on a tricycle.

Junket is a delicious custard and a lovely dessert.

But why is the old man with a red beard and red slippers eating such an enormous bowl of junket, and what could he possibly be thinking about while he feasts?

That’s a good question! And one that the old man poses to the crowds and crowds of people that gather to watch him. In fact, almost everyone in the whole world wants to know the answer to this riddle.

And only one little boy has the answer.

This ingenious book of inspired nonsense was the very first from Dorothy Kunhardt, whose Pat the Bunny has delighted generations of young children.

Famously Engaged – Robyn Thomas

Most people would draw the line at working 24/7 for years on end. Jake Olsen, my hero in Famously Engaged, is an exception. Never having a moment to himself is a side effect of the phenomenal success he has achieved with his band, Five Awesome Emperors. For the past eight years he’s pushed himself day and night: writing, recording, performing, travelling, sweet talking the media and cultivating a reputation as a player.

He has a nagging suspicion that he’s not happy, but he doesn’t have time to dwell on it. The cost of fame was always going to be high, he knew that going in, and there’s little point in begrudging the limitations of the life he has chosen. Normality is a luxury he can’t afford and so is downtime. Relationships are another thing he’s forsaken, and although he owns a number of houses, he doesn’t have a place to call home. In place of the basic elements that normally make up a person’s life he has fame, wealth and critical acclaim.

Stepping out of the spotlight changes everything in an instant and makes him question the way he has been living. Is there anything that would tempt you to work around the clock and/or make the kind of sacrifices that Jake made?

Thank you for spending time with us and our readers today!!

Overcoming Writer’s Block

By Maggie Thom

To be a writer is the life… right? Well lots of people think so but the reality, shh don’t tell anyone, but it’s hard work. So hard in fact that some people suffer from writer’s block.

So what exactly is that? Some nefarious disease? Some physical ailment? A crushing blow?

No. It’s not. It’s when a writer can’t write. Not because they don’t know how or because they can’t but then again they can’t. The words won’t flow, the story won’t come, what they do manage to write doesn’t make sense, it’s not going where they want it to, they’re way too distracted by every other thing on earth that needs to be done.

Writer’s block is one of those things that some people believe in and others don’t. The reality though is that if you’re a writer at some point in your career you’re going to struggle with getting your story down on paper. On having it make sense. On having it go the direction that you think it should.

Why does it happen? That’s really a story for another time. The question is how do you overcome it? How do you get beyond being in that checkmate place? How do you get unstuck?

Creating an article or story is about allowing the free flow of words. It’s about getting ideas down on paper. It’s about letting yourself type or write as fast as your brain churns out information. It’s not about thinking, it’s about doing. It’s not about plotting out your article, it’s about writing it.

The mistake that many writers make is that they focus on what they have to get done. They try to plot and write at the same time. They focus on creating a masterpiece the first time and are too disappointed with their results to put the effort into refining it. So it throws up another barrier that makes it tough to write or want to keep writing – ‘if you can’t do it right the first time, what’s the point?’ Or maybe they wrote something really good and fear they can’t produce something like that again.

Writing down your story the first time is not meant to be the end product. Writing is a process to get the ideas from your brain to paper (or computer), so that you don’t lose them. So that you can play with them. Change them. Meld them. Chuck them. Not everything you write down is going to be great. And not everything you write down is going to be appropriate for where you are going with your current story or article. But they might work for another article or story. When you open yourself to just writing, then you teach yourself to let the information flow. It opens you up to your creativity. It opens the flood gates.

Some things that will help you to overcome writer’s block:

1. acknowledge that you’re having a problem and that the words aren’t flowing or going where you want them to,

2. stop beating yourself up, it just keeps you stuck,

3. write with no expectations,

4. drop the shoulds – I should be doing this, I should be doing that,

5. change your focus – forget about all that you need to do, the deadlines, what it needs to have in it and focus on just writing it,

6. walk away from your article for a while, do something different, forget about it for a period of time, give it a chance to breathe,

7. allow yourself just to play with the story in your mind, don’t worry about getting it down on paper, just let the ideas come,

8. lower your standards, you’re probably focussed on creating the perfect article or story, just focus on writing something, anything.

Here’s a simple exercise to try:

Take a moment to get a topic in your head, for a simple example, try flowers. And then just start writing what you know about that subject. Do not stop to analyze where you are going with it. Just put down the ideas. Spit out everything you can onto paper (or computer). Just write and write and write and write… and write. Then when you stop to take a breath, write some more. Once you run out of things to say, then go back through the topic you’ve chosen and see what you wrote. Do not expect this to be a final product. Do not expect it to be great but you really might surprise yourself with some of the stuff that you came up with. A couple of things may happen – you have a great start to a new article/story or you may have ten ideas for new articles/stories. The key is that now you have something to work with.

Now do the same thing with that article or story you’ve chosen to create. Write and write and write. Get the words out. Open yourself to just putting the information down on paper. Once you have a draft, then you can worry about where you really want to go with it. That’s when you go back and you plot and you decide what’s okay.

Writer’s block is often about not knowing where to go, where to start, what to write. It really means you’re thinking too hard, trying to force a creation, instead of letting it just come.

Writing is about the flow of words. Let them flow…

What do you find works for you to overcome writer’s block?

She was kidnapped not once but twice and now someone wants her dead because of it….

Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story… but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

But can she do it in time…

By Maggie Thom

He didn’t commit suicide but who’s going to believe her…

Frustrated at being fired from her latest job and overwhelmed by her consolatory family, Sam decides to move to the family’s cabin at the lake. A place she hasn’t been since her dad committed suicide there twenty years before. Or did he? Snooping is something she’s good at but someone seems to be taking offense to her looking too closely at what has been happening at the lake. What she discovers is shocking. Now she must uncover what’s real and what’s not. All that she learned growing up, may be false. Keegan, who has recently moved to the area to finish his latest book, is also trying to find out if his grandfather, who’d passed away ten years before, died of natural causes or was murdered? The descendants of the four families, who own the land around the lagoon, are dying off. Since Sam and Keegan are the only ones questioning the deaths, they find themselves working together to seek the truth. Are people being murdered? Who would benefit from their deaths? Why would there be barricades and armed guards at the north end of the lake? To stay alive, Sam and Keegan must find the answers and convince others, before more people are killed… including them.
