A Journey into the Unknown

By

Mona Hodgson

 Covered wagon First Step

What would drive people from the familiar into the unknown? What would cause men to venture into a harsh wilderness, leaving their families behind? Or uprooting them?

For the Israelites, it was captivity in Egypt and the hope of freedom in a Promised Land that drove them from the prison they’d known for generations.

In the early 1840s, emigrants from the Eastern United States began traveling overland by covered wagon to escape grief, persecution, and poverty. Driven by desperation, curiosity, and greed, several hundred thousand people sold the bulk of their possessions, bid family and friends adieu, provisioned a covered wagon and took bold or timid steps toward what they hoped would be their promised land. A land of boundless opportunity. They’d heard stories of the wide open spaces, big forests, rivers and streams teeming with fish, flowers that bloomed all year, and abundant land for farming. Developing cities ripe for businesses. Gold, silver, and copper sat ready to be mined.

That is the backdrop for the Boone’s Lick Wagon Train Company in Prairie Song, Book 1 in my new Hearts Seeking Home series. The women in the Saint Charles Quilting Circle—from The Quilted Heart novellas—have been devastated by the War Between the States. From the youngest to the oldest, they’ve lost brothers, sons, husbands, and fathers. Not only were their plans changed, they were crushed under the heavy weight of endings, some gradual and some abrupt. But their faith is anchored in a faithful God. Fresh starts await them on the horizon.

Carrying their friendships in their hearts, some of the women will travel west to rebuild their lives, in search of home.

Life is a journey. You and I navigate winding roads in our family life, friendships, schooling, work place, communities—in all our spheres of influence. And any journey carries with it a process of discovery in which we can learn in experience who we are in God’s heart, our true home, and what we’re capable of in His strength. We all find ourselves stepping out into the unknown. Taking leaps of faith. Or, most times, tentative steps into a new normal.

I write journey stories because exploring unwelcomed change and struggles tempered by God’s grace reminds us that we are not alone in our passages. Each of my historical novels and novellas feature a focus verse. For Prairie Song, its Joshua 1:9.

Have I not commanded thee?

Be strong, and of a good courage;

be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed:

for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (KJV)

God was there…on the road with the Israelites. In their hardships, failures, and triumphs…providing for them.

Their job? To trust the Lord their God and to follow His lead.

Join Anna, Caroline, Lorelei and the others in their goodbyes in Saint Charles, Missouri, and on the trail as they make those discoveries for themselves.

Thanks for taking part in my journey. I hope you’ll connect with me on my website (www.monahodgson.com), blog, Facebook, and/or Pinterest.

God bless~

Mona

Will traveling west prove to be their “promised land,” or did they leave it behind?

Colorado Springs, Colo. – In the first novel in the Hearts Seeking Home historical romance series, Prairie Song (WaterBrook Press, 8/6/2013), popular western author Mona Hodgson moves an endearing, ensemble cast from St. Charles, Missouri into the wagon train life headed for Sacramento, California.

People in the Eastern half of the United States suffered captivity in the throes of a civil war during the 1860s. Like the Israelites, a tight-knit group of survivors embark on a journey full of promise and fraught with peril.

Though it means saying good-bye to the beloved friends of her quilting circle, Anna Goben is certain that she needs to enlist her family in the Boone’s Lick Company Wagon Train. The loss of her beloved brother in the Civil War has paralyzed her mother and grandfather in a malaise of grief and depression, and Anna hopes a fresh start in the Promised Land of California will prove revitalizing to them all, especially to her mother who has turned to alcohol for solace.

Caleb Reger has his own reasons for keeping his past a secret as he enlists as a trail hand to help lead a wagon train west, but the load of regret proves to be a heavy burden to cling to when he encounters Anna traveling alongside him.

As Anna and Caleb’s mutual attraction grows, the darkness of both of their pasts threatens to tear them asunder. Can they both learn to let go of what they cannot control and instead trust in God’s grace and forgiveness?

CHRISTY ENGLISH~ GIVEAWAY AND GUEST POST~ LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT…

WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE WITH US TODAY…..

HISTORICAL ROMANCE AUTHOR

CHRISTY ENGLISH

~LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT~

love on a midsummer night

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT?

CHRISTY: I was inspired by my character Pembroke, Anthony’s best friend from the first novel in the series HOW TO TAME A WILLFUL WIFE. He was a womanizer, a drinker, a gambler, basically your rougish type. A true rake. But Pembroke had a depth to him that really caught my eye. I knew all along that I wanted to write about him. I wanted to see him happy.

MBA&M: Why Shakespeare plays?

CHRISTY: The first story was so clearly a new version of The Taming of the Shrew that I wanted to write all three novels in the vein of Shakespeare. He stole many of his own plots, so I was pretty sure he wouldn’t mind. If he can see me now, I hope he’s getting a laugh or two out of my version of his world.

MBA&M: What do you do to celebrate on release day?

CHRISTY: There is a tea room in my home town, and I love to go down there. It makes me feel positively English to drink tea out of a china cup and slather a scone with clotted cream. If I can’t get downtown, I open a bottle of Veuve Cliquot. 🙂 In the end, nothing beats a glass of champagne.

MBA&M: Tell us a few tidbits about LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT, if you can?

CHRISTY: The story opens at a funeral. Arabella, Duchess of Hawthorne, stands over the coffin of her elderly husband, and sees Pembroke, the love of her life, staring at her across St. Paul’s Cathedral. She hasn’t seen the love of her life in over ten years, and it is a powerful moment. The rest of the book stems from that.

LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT is basically a story of redemption, in which two people who thought they had lost each other find each other again. It’s a story of true love triumphing over time, distance, war, and pain. If I did my job right, everyone can see a little bit of themselves in Pembroke and Arabella.

And it’s fun watching them come back together…for a quiet woman, Arabella makes sparks fly. Still waters run deep.

Thank you, Christy for taking a few moments of your day to visit with us and our readers today!

LOVE ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT

CHRISTY ENGLISH

love on a midsummer night

Pembroke finds his true love… but can he stand to look at her?

The charming, dissolute Earl of Pembroke is the most notorious rake in London. Home from the war against Bonaparte’s forces, he spends his time gaming, drinking, and bedding courtesans, trying to forget the only woman he ever loved.

Arabella, Duchess of Hawthorne, is the woman who betrayed him. Forced into a marriage with an older man, Arabella hasn’t seen Pembroke in a decade. But now her elderly husband is dead, and if the new duke can’t have her for his own, nobody will. The only man who can save her is Pembroke, the man she deserted years ago. The question is, will he?
