FOREVER MINE

BLURB…

THEIR LOVE WAS FATED…

A mail-order bride from Cincinnati, Ariah Scott had traveled all the way to Oregon to marry one man…only to lose her heart to another. What would become of her now? Ever since her father died at the hands of a vengeful relative, Ariah’s life had been shadowed by dark secrets. And now her forbidden desire for Bartholomew Noon filled her with uncertainty—and a secret longing that could never be fulfilled.

AND FORBIDDEN…

From the moment Bartholomew Noon saw Ariah standing alone in the Portland Station, the keeper of the Cape Meares Light was lost. Hopelessly in love with this angelic beauty who was fated to live beside him at the isolated lighthouse as another man’s wife, Bartholomew never dreamed that destiny would someday bring them together. Would Ariah truly be the woman he could cherish…forever?

About the author…

Image of Charlene RaddonHello and welcome to my author page. Let me tell you a little about myself, as that seems to be the main purpose of this profile. Believe it or not, I began my fiction career in the third grade when I told my class that a little sister I never had died of a black widow bite. I also wrote books through my teen years, always about a girl whose mother mistreated her by making her wash dishes, sweep the floor… you get the idea. Never finished any of those stories. Many years later, a particularly vivid dream drove me to drag out a portable typewriter and go to work on my first novel. In 1990 my second completed book, Tender Touch, brought me a first place win in a writing contest and the following year became a Golden Heart Finalist. I have five romance novels set in the American West, published by Kensington, one, The Scent of Roses, under the pseudonym Rachel Summers. My books have placed or won other contests and one, Forever Mine, received a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award nomination. I’ve always loved the Old West and I believe my novels reflect that emotion through their depth and vividness. These days I am seeing my books re-edited and published as e-books, as well as working on a new story. I hope you try my books and love them.

MY THOUGHTS:

FOREVER MINE by Charlene Raddon is a wonderful Americana Historical Romance set on the Oregon Coast at an lighthouse during the 1891.  “First published in 1995 by Kensington Books in paperback, and more recently released as an eBook by Tirgearr Publishing”.

A tender, sweet love story with very unlikely main characters, Ariah Scott and Bartholomew Noon.  Ariah is a mail order bride, but, for Bartholomew’s nephew. Can destiny, dark secrets and desire bring them together or tear them apart?

An emotional and very complex tale, which pulls the reader into the story. It does start out a bit slow, but picks up quickly. I enjoyed this unique take on romance, family and love. Also, loved the setting of a lighthouse on the coast. Yes, I enjoy lighthouses, and loved this setting and its surrounds.

The sensual scenes where real, emotional and natural, very tastefully done. Well written, with a few unforeseen twists and turns. A unique storyline, with unique characters and situations. I enjoyed how the author brought it all together to reach a satisfying ending.  An enjoyable and compelling read!

MY THOUGHTS:
IT’S IN HIS KISS by Jill Shalvis is an entertaining Contemporary Romance.  #10 Lucky Harbor Novel, but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would suggest reading the others in this series, especially, “Once in a Lifetime“.  Can one kiss last forever? You must read this tale to romance to find out the answer.
A fast paced tale that is warm, tender and light-hearted with familiar characters set in Lucky Harbor, Washington State.  Sam  Broady, a boatbuilder and investment genius, who just happens to be a sexy, hunky surfer meets, Becca Thorpe, who is escaping her city life. Love blossoms. But when her brother comes to town, trouble follows. A fun tale of romance, family and other possibilities. Sizzling heat is noted as well as a bit of suspense. Ms. Shalvis blends the right mixture of suspense, mystery and romance together to create an honest, tender love story. A wonderful read for any Contemporary Romance fan!

TODAY’S GUEST: AMANDA FORRESTER~A WINTER WEDDING~ with #Giveaway and review

Please help us welcome today’s guest….

AMANDA FORRESTER

{A WINTER WEDDING}

WELCOME, AMANDA!!

a winter wedding

AmandaForester-1MBA&M: Please tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I have a PhD in psychology and worked many years in academia before discovering that writing historical romance was way more fun. Whether in the rugged Highlands of medieval Scotland or the decadent ballrooms of Regency England, I enjoy stories that are fast-paced adventures, filled with wit, intrigue, and romance. When I’m not writing, I enjoy camping, scrapbooking, eating chocolate, and flying on zip-lines (ok, I did it once but I thought I needed to sound more exciting).

MBA&M: What is the allure of historical romance with intrigue, wit and romance?

I enjoy writing the types of books I would like to read. Don’t you love books that make you laugh, give you an adventure, and make you fall in love? I do! In A Winter Wedding, Miss Penelope Rose, the notorious Madame X, exclusive matchmaker to London’s elite, has made a modest fortune creating love matches for everyone but herself. Her toughest client yet, the Duke of Marchford, has commissioned her to find him a bride, but he is more interested in tracking down a spy than in interviewing potential mates. Marchford is willing to do anything to find that spy, including announcing an impromptu engagement to force Penelope to stay close and help him catch the traitor. When Penelope refuses to play along, Marchford takes to wooing her to stay, including embracing that most perilous of holidays–Christmas! As Penelope and Marchford work together to uncover a deadly plot, they find falling in love is the most dangerous adventure of all.

MBA&M: What is next for you as a writer?

My next release, The Highlander’s Bride, will travel back to the 14th Century to check in on Sir Gavin, who was left behind in France in my last Scottish medieval novel (True Highland Spirit). Sir Gavin has agreed to escort the beautiful Lady Marie Colette to meet her affianced husband in Scotland. Needless to say, things don’t quite go according to plan.
Back in the Regency, in A Winter Wedding there was one lady for whom Penelope could not make a match. Lady Kate was a hardened case, so naturally I had to take her on myself and I am currently writing her tale. She has been giving me trouble and protesting quite a bit, but I have a few surprises for her. And if that doesn’t work, I’ll be forced to trap her into marriage. It’s for her own good!

MBA&M: What inspired you to write about England, traitors, matchmaking and romance?

The months leading up to the passage of the Regency Act in 1811, which officially gave the Prince of Wales the control of the government in lieu of his ailing father, King George, were quite tumultuous. The King was clearly no longer able to rule but even to discuss this matter might be seen as treasonous. The war with France raged on, and Napoleon was looking supremely confident in his march across Europe. Nothing makes a better backdrop for romance than a little adventure and international intrigue!

MBA&M: Why write a romance during this era?

Ever since I read Pride and Prejudice in junior high I have loved the Regency time period. It is a wonderful time in history with great political turmoil, high manners and societal rules, and a great wardrobe! I would love to sweep across a ballroom floor in a sumptuous Regency gown! If I had a time machine, I would definitely travel to the Regency and enjoy learning how they really lived.

Reader Question: If you had a time machine, where would you go?

a winter weddingMY THOUGHTS:

A WINTER WEDDING by Amanda Forrester is an intriguing Regency Historical Romance set in 1810. # 3 in the “Marriage Mart” series, but can be read as a stand alone. Filled with adventure, romance, traitors, matchmaking, spies and passion.

An arrogant Duke and a gutsy companion found more than they bargain for, in “A Winter Wedding”, but not more than they can handle, including a bit of fun. I enjoyed this series. While, it is faith based, it is not “preachy”, but filled with energy, romance, and yes, passion.

Another light-hearted, witty, delicious romp through England, with a spy or two, twists and turns, any reader is sure to delight in reading.

What a delightful series, this has been. I look forward to the next grand adventure. It was great to see how Penelope Rose and James Lockton, the Duke of Marchford story comes together and ends. A must read!

About An American Duchess:

Set on a crumbling English manor estate during the height of the Roaring Twenties, an American duchess must decide how much she’s willing to risk for the life she truly desires…

It’s 1922, and New York heiress Zoe Gifford longs for the freedoms promised by the Jazz Age. Headstrong and brazen, but bound by her father’s will to marry before she can access his fortune, Zoe arranges for a brief marriage to Sebastian Hazelton, whose aristocratic British family sorely needs a benefactor.

Once in England, her foolproof plan to wed, inherit and divorce proves more complicated than Zoe had anticipated. Nigel Hazelton, Duke of Langford and Sebastian’s older brother, is as austere and imposing as the family’s ancestral estate. Still reeling from the Great War, Nigel is now staging a one-man battle against a rapidly changing world—and the outspoken Zoe represents everything he’s fighting against.

When circumstances compel Zoe to marry Nigel rather than Sebastian, their heated quarrelling begets passion of another sort. But with Nigel unwilling to change with the times, will Zoe be forced to choose between her husband and her dreams?

A MAN OF HIS WORD

Border lord Walter Scott of Rankilburn, grief-stricken after burying his father, goes to the forest seeking solace. Instead he finds a half-naked young lady fleeing pursuit. Wat offers his protection, but honor demands that he return the golden-eyed beauty to her rightful husband-even though the last thing he wants is to see her in another man’s arms.

A RUNAWAY BRIDE

Molly Cockburn has fled her home, family, and the brutal scoundrel she was forced to wed. Her pursuers are closing in when the powerful new Lord of Rankilburn bravely intervenes, then promises to help prove her marriage unlawful. Though fiercely loyal to her family, Molly fears they might harm the man she is coming to love, and now she must decide whether to remain faithful to her blood . . . or to her heart.

MOONLIGHT RAIDER EXCERPT!

Without thinking, she put a hand to his arm, noting how hard his muscles were as she looked into his eyes said with deep sincerity, “I’m sorry I frightened you. I don’t think clearly when I’m angry. In troth, I fear that whenever my temper gets the better of me, I do try to get away, but only to try and calm myself. Losing my temper has often …”
She paused when his expression altered rather strangely.
“You should not look at a man like that unless you want him to kiss you,” he said softly.
“But I do,” she replied honestly and without hesitation. “No man has kissed me since my granddad died, and I think I would like you to, if you don’t mind.”

***

A voice deep within Wat shouted a warning of where such a kiss might lead, but he ignored it, cupping her chin again with one hand while he drew her closer with the other. Then, gently and ever so slowly, savoring the moment for himself, he lowered his mouth to hers and kissed her.
Her rosy lips were feather soft and warm against his own. Her slender body snuggled against his and seemed to fit there unusually well. When she moved her lips beneath his, kissing him back, he shifted the hand that had cupped her chin to cradle her head beneath her veil, marveling at the soft silkiness of her hair.
She moved her lips as if to taste different parts of his, and another part of his body stirred strongly in response.
The urge to take her then and there was nearly overpowered him, and as much to distract himself from that dangerous urge as to answer the invitation her lips were offering, he pressed his tongue between them and began to explore the intriguing, moist interior of her mouth.
She gave a gasp, then seemed to stop breathing. But when he continued his exploration undaunted, she inhaled with a moan and touched her tongue to his.
Her breath was whisper soft and clean, and her breasts pressed against him, tantalizing him and making his fingers itch to stroke them. That thought provided stronger warning than the voice in his head that he was treading dangerous ground.
Remembering his vow to protect her but wise enough not to break their embrace too abruptly, he eased his tongue from her mouth. Then he kissed her more lightly on the lips and again on her forehead.
“We must go back, lass. I should not have done that, but I’m not sorry I did.”
“We did it, sir,” she said, looking solemnly into his eyes. “Faith, I invited it.”
He shook his head at her. “Believe me, if my father were still alive, and I were to tell him exactly how it happened, he would have much to say to me, none of which I would want to hear. But I’d deserve every word.”
“Sadly, he is not here to scold you,” she said.
“Aye, but Westruther will give me an earful if he hears about it. You are an inexperienced maiden who was naturally curious, whilst I am …”
“… much experienced at such things?” she said for him when he paused.
“More experienced than you, I’d wager,” he said with a sudden grin. “But we are not going to discuss my experience, now or ever, my lass.”

GUEST BLOGGER~ A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN AUTHOR~ ELLIE ASHE~CHASING THE DOLLAR! with #Excerpt and #giveaway…

Please welcome today’s guest…

{CHASING THE DOLLAR}

ChasingtheDollar cover

Day in the life of author
When I think of how my favorite authors spend their days, I imagine that it involves peaceful home offices overlooking pastoral scenes, adorable dogs laying at their feet, while the authors bring forth amazing stories of memorable characters. There may be a walk in the woods involved.
And then I think about a typical day in this author’s life and laugh and laugh and laugh.
I have a full-time job, so I have to cram writing in around a busy daily schedule. This means that Chasing the Dollar and my other works-in-progress get written in the damnedest places. Any place I have to wait more than two minutes at a time, such as the lobby at my dentist’s office, or waiting for my number to be called at the DMV. Weekends and evenings, of course. Sometimes early in the morning. Whenever insomnia strikes. And, on a few rare occasions, a holding cell while I’m waiting for the jail personnel to bring me a client for a meeting. (Don’t judge me! It can take up to 10 minutes for them to get to the visiting room. That’s 10 valuable minutes I could be scribbling in my notebook!)
So I don’t have a regular writing schedule. A typical day includes waking up and going for a walk, unless it’s raining, cold, or I’m being lazy, and then maybe getting a little Internet time—checking FaceBook, Twitter and email. While driving to and from work, I’m probably listening to a podcast about writing (I Should Be Writing, Self Publishing Podcast, Self Publishing Roundtable, Reading and Writing Podcast, Writing Excuses, Rocking Self Publishing Podcast, or Authorcast—to name just a few) or an audiobook (I’m currently listening to Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, by John J. Ratey). In the evening, I may write for an hour or two, if I didn’t bring work home from my day job. Where I can really make progress on my book is on the weekends.
I do track my word-count each month and have monthly goals. I don’t always make these goals, but having them in mind gives me a benchmark—am I working toward my publishing goal or slacking off too much? Even the days when I can’t put pen to paper, not a day passes when I’m not thinking about my work-in-progress, which keeps me in that world.
On days when I get home exhausted from work, I always remind myself that I’ve never once regretted sitting down at the keyboard and writing a few paragraphs. But I have regretted all the times I sat in front of the television instead of writing. That always makes it an easy choice to return to the computer and my characters’ world.

Oh, my, what an interesting life! Thanks for sharing!

Excerpt: (Chapter 1)

“Not guilty.”
The two words sliced through the thick atmosphere in the courtroom, and my heart leapt. The boa constrictor of stress that had been wound around my body for the last year and a half eased a tiny bit. Next to me, my attorney, Robert Fogg, tensed. We weren’t remotely done, his body language warned.
“As to Count Two, wire fraud, the jury finds the defendant—”
A pause. Why was the clerk pausing?
“Not guilty.”
The breath escaped my lungs, but Rob put a cautious hand on my arm warning me not to get too excited yet. He’d spent much of the last fourteen months explaining the odds, explaining the process that I’d face if I insisted on going to trial, comparing the risk I’d face with the known quantity of the plea offer—a mere four years in prison if I agreed to a plea deal and admitted to defrauding clients of the investment bank where I’d been an analyst, compared to ten years or more I risked if I was convicted at trial. And I’d almost certainly be convicted, Rob had assured me. Even if the witnesses against me were convicted felons, liars, conmen who would say anything to get a break on their own prison sentences. The documents were undeniable, incontrovertible evidence of my guilt.
“As to Count Three, wire fraud, the jury finds the defendant—”
Damn her, why the dramatic pause?
“Not guilty,” she finished.
This time I glanced over at the jury and made eye contact with several of them, my heart still in my throat. Instead of the impassive expressions they’d worn in the last two weeks, they looked relaxed. Friendlier. Less scary. And they were looking at me.
That was one of the signs Rob told me might signal a favorable verdict. If the jury walked in and wouldn’t look at me, they probably had convicted me. When they had filed in with their completed verdict forms, I was too nervous to look in their direction.
“As to Count Four, wire fraud, the jury finds the defendant not guilty.”
No waiting this time. The clerk flipped the page to the next form and continued reading, her pace picking up. She must have realized that if she kept pausing before the big reveal on each charge, we’d be here until dark.
“As to Count Five, wire fraud, the jury finds the defendant not guilty.”
I couldn’t relax yet, not quite yet. There were still ten more opportunities to hear I was going to prison.
Fifteen fraud charges. Fifteen chances to hear the clerk announce that the jury had believed my former boss, his former boss, and the government’s accountants and investigators who had testified that I, Miranda Vaughn, participated in a conspiracy to defraud banks and investors. That I, with my business degree from a state school still freshly inked, managed to find a way to outwit regulators for the entire six years I worked at Patterson Tinker Investment Strategies to reap huge profits at the expense of the most established investment advisors in the industry.
Rob’s hand gripped my arm, and I realized that the clerk was done reading the verdicts. The room was blurry, and I felt the wet tears running down my cheeks for the first time. The stress of holding those tears back in the last year had caused me to lose sleep, lose hair, and develop a nasty habit of grinding my teeth when I finally managed to close my eyes at night. But I knew that if I had let loose those emotions, I’d never be able to rein them back in and would have ended up in a stark white room with no interior door knobs where I’d spend my days rocking back and forth and waiting for my next round of pills.
“We did it, Miranda,” Rob whispered, putting an arm around me in an awkward hug.
I looked up to see the judge watching me. Instead of the stern glare I had grown accustomed to, he was almost smiling at me. I blinked. It must have been the tears in the way. But when I wiped my eyes, there it was—Judge Smith’s softening expression, looking like someone’s granddad instead of the dour arbiter of my fate.
The judge addressed the jury, thanked them for their service, directed them to the jury commissioner’s office to turn in their parking passes, and then looked back at me.
“The bond is exonerated. You’re free to go, Ms. Vaughn. Court is recessed.”
He stood, and everyone in the room followed suit. The jurors filed back into their room off the side of the courtroom to collect their belongings. Several of them smiled at me, and I smiled back but could feel my lips start to tremble. I swallowed hard and tried to pull myself together. Rob began gathering the legal pads that littered the defense counsel table.
I stood next to the table, still stunned and unsure what I was supposed to do now. Part of me expected to be found guilty, even knowing that I hadn’t done what the prosecutor accused me of. I had prepared myself for that. Studied the post-conviction proceedings, the deadline for filing a notice of appeal, researched sentencing procedures and even federal prisons. I hadn’t planned what would happen if I were acquitted of all the charges, and I was at a loss as to what to do now.
Turning to the nearly empty courtroom, I saw my lone supporter. The entirety of my cheering section was blowing her nose noisily into a hankie. She came toward me, pulling me into a warm hug over the low railing that separated the gallery from the attorneys and defendants.
“Aunt Marie, when did you get here?”
She gripped me harder. “Somewhere around count seven,” she said. “Rob sent me a text when the jury came back. I hot-footed it right down here.”
I relaxed into her embrace. The familiar scent of Chanel and baked goods that always permeated her clothing soothed me and took me back to the safety of my childhood. She had come straight from work because she was still wearing her apron with the Sugar Plum Bakery logo.
“Miranda, I’ll take care of the bond paperwork,” Rob said, interrupting our family reunion.
I pulled away from Aunt Marie and nodded. Rob’s face was flushed, and he looked two decades younger than his sixty-three years. He seemed incapable of suppressing the huge grin on his face. Suddenly I felt awkward, unsure how to tell him how grateful I was.
“I don’t know what to say,” I said. “Thank you, Rob. Thank you so much.”
The words were inadequate. During the fourteen months since my arrest, I always felt that he believed I was guilty of something, but despite that, he had done an admirable job defending me. He gave me a crooked smile.
“You’re welcome,” he said. “We’ll talk soon. I’m going to see if I can catch a few of the jurors and talk to them. Come by the office later. We’ll celebrate.”
He leaned across the railing to shake Aunt Marie’s hand and was pulled into a tight embrace. When she finally released him, he gave her a kiss on the cheek and smiled as he gently wiped a tear from her face. Then he turned back to the counsel table and continued clearing it of folders and notepads and his laptop computer, sliding the whole mess into the large black case that he’d been wheeling into court every day of the trial. He zipped the case, gave me another quick hug, and walked over to the other counsel table.
I turned to see how the prosecutors were handling the news. My tormentors—an older, brittle veteran prosecuting attorney named Donna Grayson and Matthew Reese, her younger co-counsel, a clean-cut young man who looked like he was my age. Neither of them would look at me, and their expressions were grim as they shook Rob’s hand.
Finally, Matthew Reese made eye contact with me and gave me a nod.
“Good luck to you, Ms. Vaughn,” he said.
I almost believed his words were sincere, but then I remembered three days earlier when he called me a thief in his closing argument. I returned the nod without a word, not trusting myself to hold back if I spoke to him—something I’d been forbidden to do for well over a year.
I slipped through the low swinging gate and took Aunt Marie’s arm, leading her out of the dark courtroom into the bright, wide and empty hallway. When I had been arraigned on the fraud charges in this courthouse, the hallway had been packed with reporters clamoring for a comment. But since then, they had lost interest. The prosecutor’s office wouldn’t be putting out a press release on the loss, and I wondered if anyone would even care that I had won. That the woman the government had called “a slick con artist and one of the masterminds of the greatest financial fraud ever seen in this state” was walking out of court and not heading to prison.
I was free to go. No longer facing a decade in prison. Not under a cloud of allegations that had cost me my career, my good name, and my peace of mind. That had driven off friends. Led to the break-up of a five-year relationship. Cost me every last dime of savings and most of Aunt Marie’s retirement as well.
I walked up to the wall of windows and looked down on the city, the busy intersection by the federal courthouse, the people jaywalking to get to the Starbucks across the street. A normal day, with everyone bustling about in the bright afternoon sunlight, enjoying a typical California summer day.
I was free to go.
Free.
To go where?

MY THOUGHTS:

WE THREE KINGS by John John Pontius is an interesting Christian Fiction/Latter Day Saints/History. A compelling, thought-provoking tale of the story of the Three Kings from the Latter Day Saints point of view. Well written, with interesting and engaging characters. The storyline, in my opinion was plausible. Light reading and one which could be read over again. I enjoyed the relationship between the characters on their journey to see the signs of the Savior’s birth. A different but interesting take on the story of the Three Wise Men. Not just a Christmas- time story. It will have you searching out your Bible to see if the details match. As I said earlier, very thought-provoking.

GUEST BLOGGER with #Giveaway~ MY HIGHLAND SPY~ VICTORIA ROBERTS

Please help us welcome today’s guest…

VICTORIA ROBERTS, author of MY HIGHLAND SPY…

My Highland Spy (1)

MBA&M: What is the allure of writing about Scottish Highlanders tales of romance, and intrigue?

Thank you so much for having me today.
I can only speak from my own experience, and I have to say that I’ve been drawn to the Scottish Highlands ever since I picked up a Hannah Howell novel. There is something about the lands, the struggles, the triumphs, that is beyond words. It’s a feeling, a sense of honor that these men fought so hard for freedom and justice. The country is so rich in history that I can’t help but write this genre. Scotland, kilted men, bagpipes… What’s nae to love, eh?

MBA&M: Tell us in your own words about MY HIGHLAND SPY?

Lady Ravenna Walsingham has been an English spy for many years. When she’s sent to the Scottish Highlands to discover whether or not a certain Highland laird conspires against the Crown, she’s not exactly ecstatic about the assignment. She’s to masquerade as a governess for the laird’s son and thinks Highlanders are nothing but a bunch of kilted barbarians.
Laird Ruairi Sutherland lies to the king and is surprised when an English governess shows up on his doorstep. He has enough troubles between his father-in-law and the other lairds that want to raise arms against the English. The last he needs is a woman—an English woman—under his roof.

Sparks fly, tensions rise, but love is definitely in the air…

MBA&M: List five things readers may or may not find fascinating about you as a writer?

1. I don’t outline. I know the first and last line of my manuscript and go. It drives my critique partner crazy, but she loves me.
2. I have a full-time day job and write before and after work. I also have a husband of 21 years and two kids (13 and 9.)
3. I can’t listen to music when I write. Must. Be. Dead. Silent.
4. I finished my first manuscript (Temptation in a Kilt) the end of August, pitched in October, landed an agent and a series deal in April. I know. That doesn’t sound real, but I’m living proof that dreams can come true.
5. The first time I met Nora Roberts I thanked her. When she asked me why, I said, “Thanks to you, I’m right next to you on the shelf.” (Roberts-Roberts) She laughed and said, “I’m glad I could help you out.”

Thanks so much for spending time with me today.

Reviews…

My Highland Spy (1)“An exciting Highland tale of intrigue, betrayal, and love.”
—Hannah Howell, New York Times bestselling author of Highland Master

“Roberts’ newest features a surprise-laden, quick-paced plot, replete with unconventional and fiercely independent characters. Her lyrical prose grabs readers’ attention, and the high level of emotional tension simply adds to the depth of the story. This book begs to be read and reread.”

But this lady spy might make him…

Guest post with giveaway… SAMANTHA GRACE~ IN BED WITH A ROGUE…

Please help us welcome today’s guest…

IN BED WITH A ROGUE

SAMANTHA GRACE

Welcome, Samantha…

MBA&M: What are five things readers may or may not know about you as a writer?

1. I’m a little embarrassed to admit I didn’t read much romance before I became a romance writer. I read a few historical romances (Johanna Lindsey, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Laveryl Spencer) and a couple of contemporary authors (Nora Roberts, Janet Daley) in college, but that was it. I also enjoyed a few chick-lit books (Shopaholic series & Bridget Jones) after I had my kids. Looking back, it makes no logical sense that I chose to write romance, but I love it. It feels like the right fit to me.
2. I approached writing like I did graduate school. I assumed I could learn to write rather than believing it was simply a matter of talent. I definitely had a passion from writing, though.
3. I wrote stories beginning in third grade, so I’ve wanted to be a writer for a long time.
4. I minored in journalism, but it isn’t my kind of writing. It was my major, but then I discovered psychology and it was an easy decision to switch majors.
5. My first paying job as a writer was writing short contemporary stories for True Confessions.

MBA&M: What inspired you to write historical novels?

I’ve always loved history, but it feels like a happy accident that I began writing historical romance. I was having a hard time at my day job a few years and I was looking for a way to escape the stress at the library. Reading has always been my go-to escape. As I was wandering the aisles at the library, I ran across a Johanna Lindsey book I had never read. It brought back good memories, so I picked it up. After reading a couple of historical romances, I thought I would like to try writing one so I did.

MBA&M: Tell us your journey to becoming an author?

I began writing Wednesday afternoons while my kids were in school. It was my day off and it was mainly for fun. I didn’t know if I would have the nerve to let anyone else read it, but once I finished the book, I was excited by the prospect of getting it published. I Googled how to get published and learned I really needed to find a critique group. I found a wonderful online group whose members have become some of my best friends. They were so kind and generous with their time. I will always be grateful for their guidance. Anyway, one of my friends was published with Sourcebooks and she told me Deb Werksman was accepting online pitches. I was so nervous about posting my pitch for everyone to read, not to mention the possibility of being shot down on a public forum. Luckily, Deb was interested and asked to see my manuscript (Miss Hillary Schools a Scoundrel). I received the call about a week later and it was one of the most amazing moments of my life.

MBA&M: Where do you draw your inspiration from when beginning a story?

Story ideas come from many different sources. I can’t even pinpoint where exactly. Sometimes it’s a combination of several things: a snippet of a real life story, a lyric from a song, or something that just pops into my head. Before I start writing, I have to explore my characters’ backgrounds, goals, and motivations. Once I know what has happened in their lives and what is important to them, I’m usually very excited to start the story.
Thanks so much for having me at My Book Addiction today! I’m excited about chatting with everyone today. I’d love to know what book lead to readers’ love for romance.

Thank you, Samantha, for taking time out of your busy schedule today to spend time with us and our readers!

Night Storm CoverNight Storm
Excerpt

In the distance, Charlotte Fielding spotted the simple, white-lettered sign that marked her destination. Apothecary. The tension she’d been carrying in her shoulders since entering the Whitley residence loosened its biting grip. The strain between husband and wife had not lifted in her two-day absence. If anything, it had grown worse, now that Mr. Whitley felt well enough to defend himself.

Charlotte’s brisk pace slowed. A man was slumped on the pavement between her shop and the boarded-up bakery next door. He sat with one leg stretched out across the walkway, the other bent at an angle. The rim of his hat protected his face from identification. So, too, did the long black woolen coat and matching muffler around his neck.

The tension in Charlotte’s shoulders returned full force. Even though she could not identify him, she knew what he wasn’t—a beggar. Everything about him was too fine for him to be living in the streets. She glanced around, checking the evening shadows as best she could with only lamplight to aid her. Anderson’s lending library, Patterson’s coffee shop, Gertrude’s lace boutique, Tilly’s former bakery—they all stood silent and free of loitering troublemakers and customers. If she cried out for help, would the shopkeepers hear her from their snug, upstairs apartments?

She considered entering through the back of her building, an area normally reserved for deliveries, but she couldn’t bring herself to venture down the dank, narrow alleyway at this time of night. Drawing in a calming breath, she reached into her reticule and pulled out her pouch of pepper. A poor defense, she knew, but she always kept it, thinking it would give her a small chance of escape if thrown in an assailant’s face.

Increasing her pace, she stopped in front of her shop’s weathered door, the color of a cloud-streaked blue sky. The man remained motionless, silent. Eerily so. She experienced a moment of indecision. Should she nudge him? Could he be hurt and in need of assistance? Or should she continue on inside her own shop and mind her own business?

“Hello, Charley.” The voice was unmistakable.

A chill started at the base of her neck and swept through her body. Bone deep and breath stealing. With slow, precise movements, her gaze lowered to the source of the too-familiar voice. A voice that belonged to the only man who had ever called her Charley.

The man’s uplifted face revealed itself. Thick, bold eyebrows stood out on a pale, pain-filled face. A once-beloved face. Cameron Adair. What little air she had left disappeared at the sight of Cam—Cameron. Other than a brief glimpse of him a few months ago, she hadn’t seen him for years. But she would have known him anywhere. The shock of seeing him held her immobile, terrified in a way she hadn’t been since the early days of their falling out.

“Charley, I need your help.”

His words, laced with a strain born of hard-fought control, snapped her out of the past and plunged her back into the present. Cameron Adair was sprawled at her door, hurt, needing her help.

She slid her key into the lock. Metal scratched against metal until she heard a familiar click. Setting her bag inside the door, she returned outside. “Are you able to get to your feet?” She managed to keep her voice calm, unaffected. But inside, a violent tremor began and a maelstrom of questions flooded her mind. Why come to her? Where was he hurt? Why show up on her doorstep after complete and utter silence for five miserable years?

Carefully, she folded her hands at her waist and locked her knees before she could humiliate herself with senseless emotion. She had decided long ago to waste no more of it on Cameron Adair.

Something like disappointment flared in his blue, ice-chipped eyes. “Yes, with assistance.”

“Where are you hurt?”

“Left leg, right shoulder.”

“Let’s get you inside out of the cold, and I’ll hail a hansom cab to take you to Dr. Hollingsworth.”

He shook his head and mumbled, “I’ve been shot. Lost too much blood.”

“Cameron, I can’t—”

“You must,” he interrupted. “I haven’t the strength to go elsewhere.”

She knew what it had cost him to admit to such weakness. And because she knew this about him, an unrivaled fear forced her to his side.

Positioning herself in a crouch, Charlotte took a steadying breath before sliding her arm around his broad back. Blood, sweat, and a masculine scent uniquely Cameron’s filled her nose. She gritted her teeth against an overwhelming desire to inhale deeply.

“Ready?” she asked.

He nodded once, his full lips pressed into a thin, determined line. Bending forward, he wrapped an arm around her shoulder to brace himself. The new position put them face-to-face, breath-to-breath.
