WHAT WAS IT about the holidays, Daniel Kinsley wondered as he returned to his desk, that seemed to bring out the worst in people?

He was glad he had some time to spare before his next appointment. His meeting with Gloria Farnsworth had put him in a miserable mood. He dropped heavily into his chair and swung it around to stare out the window. Across the street, a billboard displaying a Norman Rockwell–style scene seemed to mock him. It showed a cheerful, ruddy-faced Santa distributing brightly wrapped gifts to an elegantly dressed and ridiculously happy family. The husband clasped his wife’s hand affectionately, and the model-perfect woman stroked the blonde curls of a little girl in a red velvet dress. Daniel snorted. Did anyone really live like that? Not in his experience.

He thought of his own parents and their respectful, polite relationship. When was the last time he’d seen his parents touch? For that matter, his mother’s obligatory cheek kisses aside, he couldn’t recall his parents ever touching him with affection. They never argued. They never fought. But he also wasn’t sure they actually loved each other. A sad statement, especially after forty-three years of marriage.

It didn’t help his mood to remember that he’d agreed to spend more than a week with them in Newport over the holidays. He knew there’d be no Christmas cheer in that. At times he questioned why his parents stayed together. Then again, maybe they had it right. No love, no pain. Not wanting to dwell on it, he allowed his thoughts to come full circle to Gloria Farnsworth.

Daniel turned away from the window and looked down at the open Farnsworth case file on his desk. He’d been tempted to tell Gloria to find another lawyer. But would that really have accomplished anything? More than half his cases disgusted him in one way or another. Okay, maybe none quite as much as the Farnsworth case, but if he wanted to extricate himself from cases that he found morally reprehensible, where exactly would he draw the line?

He picked up his pen and twirled it between his fingers.

Gloria Farnsworth was definitely at the extreme end. She’d torn a strip off him when he told her she should be satisfied with the spousal support her husband had agreed to—generous in his estimation—and accept that she was on shaky ground trying to get child support for a nineteen-year-old who wasn’t attending school and didn’t have a job. Gloria had demanded to know under what conditions she would be entitled. And fool that he was, he’d treated her like a rational person and explained some of the circumstances under which case law might entitle her to child support. He never would’ve imagined that she’d jump on one of the alternatives and willingly label her own son mentally disabled for the sake of gouging more money out of her soon-to-be-ex.

It was repugnant. Daniel knew it wouldn’t hold up in court—no expert witness would testify to it—but things probably wouldn’t come to that. Having met the husband on a couple of occasions, he sensed that the man cared about his child. Daniel was quite certain he’d settle rather than subject his son to the pain and humiliation of being questioned in court about his mental capacity.

Maybe Daniel should tell Gloria Farnsworth to take a long hike off a short— Whoa! She’d really gotten to him. In more polite terms, he would ask her to hire another lawyer. He refused to be party to what essentially amounted to fraud.

He straightened the papers, closed the file folder and tossed his pen on top.

With his parents’ loveless marriage, plus the hostile family disputes he witnessed at work, it was hardly surprising that he was still single at thirty-six.

Why couldn’t people be civil to one another? As an idealistic law student, he’d chosen family law because he wanted to help people, yet his caseload was dominated by nasty divorce and custody battles. Who was he kidding? He hadn’t helped anyone in a long time in any way other than to better their financial circumstances or inflict hardship and pain on their spouses. It was a bitter disappointment to see how people who’d supposedly once loved each other and been committed to each other ended up.

Yes, he told himself again, maybe his parents had it right, after all.

Selena, his executive assistant, interrupted his thoughts, calling to announce his next appointment—probably a good thing, as he was getting more and more depressed. Checking his schedule, he felt his mood lighten. This meeting would be a nice antithesis to his day so far.

He rose as Selena escorted a plainly dressed, middle-aged woman into his office. “Ms. Andrews, I’m Daniel Kinsley.” He extended a hand in greeting. “Would you like a coffee? Some water?”

“Call me Laura, please,” she said, shaking his hand, “and no. I’m fine, thank you.”

Daniel signaled to Selena that she could leave and offered Laura Andrews a seat.

“Thank you for meeting with me,” Laura began.

“The pleasure is mine. Your organization has a stellar reputation, and so do you as its executive

director.”

“All of us at the Wish I May Foundation believe wholeheartedly in what we do, and we work very hard for our program’s children and their families. Yet we always have more families in need than we have sponsors, especially at this time of year. I can assure you that if your firm sponsors a child, you won’t regret it. All our sponsors tell us how much it means to them to make a difference in a young person’s life.”

“What’s involved in sponsorship?”

“It’s straightforward. You’d be given information on a chronically ill child and that child’s family and Christmas wish list. You’ll find that their wishes, for the most part, are very basic. Winter clothing, books, some small toys.” Laura’s smile conveyed sadness rather than pleasure. “Basic because these families often endure hardships that extend well beyond the illness of the child. We encourage sponsors to consider doing something extra for the child, if they can.” Daniel thought he saw a mischievous glint in her eye. “A trip to Walt Disney World, perhaps, or a PlayStation gaming system.”

It didn’t take Daniel long to commit his firm.

“All that’s left is to decide on the family you’ll be sponsoring.” Laura reached into her bag and pulled out a folder. Flipping through the papers, she finally drew out two sheets.

“Problem?” Daniel asked when Laura continued to scrutinize the two pages.

“Hmm? No. Not really.” She glanced up. “It’s just that I know both these families personally, and I’m having a hard time choosing between them.” She held out both sheets. “Here. Why don’t you decide?”

Daniel read the pages and examined the photographs at the top of each. Choosing between the two children and their families was impossible. Finally, coming to the only decision he could, he set the pages on his desk and looked up at Laura. Her eyes were focused on him, and a small smile played at the corners of her mouth. Her expression made him think that he’d been masterfully manipulated. In this case, he didn’t mind. “You’re very good at your job,” he acknowledged.

She gave a slight nod, and her smile remained in place. “I do my best.”

Daniel knew that when he shared the children’s stories with his partners, he’d be able to raise the needed money for each of them, including enough for some nice extras. “We’ll sponsor them both,” he said.

For the first time in months—no, years—he felt he was doing something worthwhile. And it had nothing to do with the law.

 Excerpt

“Is that
really how you say thanks? By trying to cut me open?”  He kept his voice low and he made sure to
keep them in the shadows. The last thing he wanted was some do-gooder human
coming around.
            Her
breath panted out as she heaved in his hold. He didn’t let her go.
“I…I
didn’t realize it was you.”
            Right.
He could actually buy that. Seeing as how she kept having werewolves stalk her,
she truly might have thought someone else was after her.
            “It’s
me,” he told her grimly. “You ran from me.
            He
could see every beautiful detail of her face, even in the darkness. He had
perfect vision—perfectly enhanced vision.
There was no missing the fear in her expression. He didn’t like Chloe’s
fear.  Even when he was pissed at her,
Connor didn’t want her to be afraid.
            “You
know I won’t hurt you,” he said, his voice a low rasp.
            “Then
let me go.”
            If
only things were that simple.  “I can’t.”
            Her
lips trembled.  Her lips were the first
thing he’d noticed about her—they were full and red. The kind of lips that
instantly made him think of sex.  Then
he’d gotten caught in her eyes. No one should have eyes that blue.  Maybe it was because her hair was so dark, a
perfect black, and, in contrast to that darkness, her eyes appeared to be such
a bright, electric blue.
            Her
face was heart-shaped, her cheekbones almost ridiculously high. She had a small
nose and a slightly pointed chin.  Her
skin was pale, probably because the Para Unit had been keeping her in various stages
of isolation and she hadn’t exactly been free to roam in the outside world and
soak up a bit of sunshine.
            But
that was what happened when you killed a man…and when you rose from the dead. You get monitored by the Para Unit.
Chloe
Quick wasn’t supposed to be in front of him. She’d died a few weeks ago.  Not some near-death BS, either.  She’d been knifed in the heart. She’d died.
            Then
she’d come back, thanks to the dark wish of a djinn.  Only now, the Para Unit didn’t exactly know what Chloe was.
            “I
warned you not to escape,” he told her. The other werewolf had been right. Her
scent was damn near intoxicating, and if he’d just been a werewolf, he probably
would have been nearly mindless in his desire to claim her.
            But
he wasn’t just a wolf, and that was why Eric Pate had given him guard duty with
Chloe. Because I’m supposed to be able to
control my baser impulses.
But if that were truly the case, would he be
holding her so carefully, his fingers sliding over her wrists, his body pushing
ever closer to hers?

Top 5 favorite summer reads:
I haven’t had time to read, so let’s change this to Top 5 Hero attributes.
1. He must possess an honor code. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a popular one, but he must live it, despite what it may cost him.
2. A merciful heart. It could start out cold, but he’ll need to forgive the heroine for doing things like slapping him in the face a time or two,  defying his commands,  or arguing endlessly with him while managing to set his heart racing.
3. He must be courageous in the face of any battle, physical or emotional.
4. He must be loyal. A man who cheats is ugly, even one who wears a plaid.
5. He must appreciate the heroines attributes, even if those attributes are wielding a sword, shooting an arrow, or standing up to a king.

Wicked Ways of Alexander Kidd excerpt…
Quinn_The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan_E-BookHe moved up against her again, sending hot fissures down her spine, and curled his arm around her waist. His grip was filled with strength and tension, yet gentle when he pulled her closer. “Miss Grant,” he scorched across her lips, hypnotizing her, paralyzing her. “I’ve had the Royal Navy on me arse. I don’t care about yar kin comin’ after me. Still, I’d prefer not to battle me father’s friend.”
In an instant the gravity of what she had done became clear. Her kin would indeed come after her and he wasn’t afraid. He was obviously mad, not in his right state of mind. Nevertheless, her kin could die in a battle on the sea. “Then…” She arched her back to get away from him. He moved in over her. What would a madman do with her? With Kyle? She needed to know. “…what d’ye plan on doing with me?”
He gave her no time to think, to catch her breath, to pull away…if she had a mind and the strength to do.
Caitrina had been kissed a few years back by young John MacKinnon. But she knew, as the captain’s beguiling mouth dipped down to hers, that this kiss was going to be very very different.
And hell, she was correct.
There was nothing gentle or curious about it. His mouth covered hers with dominance and scalding heat while he dragged her in against the rigid, flat lines of his body. His tongue teased against her lips, licking, tasting her, tempting her to join in his sweet madness. Like that flame, he swept over her, consuming her muscles, scorching her nerve endings. He kissed her until she began to believe he had every right to do so—until her knees went weak and a slight, pitiful gasp escaped her lips.
He finally broke away with a slow, seductive smile she wanted to gaze at for years to come.
She slapped him hard across his face, lest he think to take further liberties in the future—since she hadn’t stopped him the first time.
For a moment, something dark and fully seductive moved across his features. She thought, trying to slow her heartbeat, that he might either strangle her or rip the gown from her body and have his way with her.
“Fergive me,” he said roughly and without a trace of remorse. “I misjudged. I don’t bed children.”
Her mouth fell open and her eyes narrowed into slits. Here she thought he was being gallant, when he was simply being insulting. Children! How dare he imply that she wasn’t yet a woman! “I should slap ye again fer yer insult,” she seethed.
“Do it,” he provoked her with a sinful, sinuous smile, “and the beast that I am at this moment keepin’ at bay, will more than likely haul ya up against that wall and take ya, despite yar protests.”
She felt the color drain from her face. She couldn’t breathe, or think, or speak, blushing and stammering about for something to say. The images he conjured for her frightened and thrilled her out of her skin at the same time. She didn’t like being threatened but she wasn’t a fool to test him.

Quinn_The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan_E-Book

About THE SWEET SURRENDER OF JANET BUCHANAN
SHE WOULD NOT BE CONQUERED . . .
Janet Buchanan is no man’s property. She refuses to marry her family’s sworn enemy-consequences be damned. She’d rather take a dagger to the brute herself. Yet when a tantalizing-and infuriating-man from her past comes to her rescue, Janet finds herself undeniably tempted by his hot, hungry kiss.
HE COULD NOT BE TAMED . . .
Notorious for his prowess as a lover and a fighter, Darach Grant has only one goal in mind: to defend his kin’s land from the impending siege of a hostile clan. The last thing he needs is the delicious distraction of Janet Buchanan-the only woman who can stir his ire as deeply as she warms his blood. But Janet’s intended will stop at nothing to claim her, forcing Darach to choose between surrendering his honor . . . or his heart.
Quinn_The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan_E-BookSweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan excerpt..
She laughed, drawing his gaze to her mouth. “My, my, Grant, but ye certainly havena’ changed. Ye are as cocky as before.”
“Ye’re no’ the first to think so.” Letting her hear the smirk in his voice, he raised his fingers to her face and caressed the sweet contour of her chin. He stopped suddenly at the pinch of steel at his groin. He looked down at the small dagger in her free hand, poised between his legs.
“If ye don’t remove yer hand from my face, I’ll most likely be the last.”
Her promise was made of silk and steel, convincing enough to keep him still. Close enough to look into her eyes, Darach drenched his vision in what he saw. A strong, fearless lass, who at present, was enjoying herself immensely. A spirited mare with lightning quick hands and a merciless tilt of her lips.
“I only wish to kiss ye, lass. Nothin’ more,” he promised quietly, pressing her, drawing her in with a finger under her chin. She wouldn’t kill him. Not with a marriage to the Menzie chief looming in her future. He tilted his head and grazed her mouth with his, just lightly enough to share breath, short and instantly heated. He watched her eyes close, her lips parting ever so slightly to receive him more fully.
He paused. What was he doing? Hadn’t it taken him months to put Janet out of his mind? Didn’t every lass he’d pursued since meeting her pale in comparison to her fiery spirit? She made him want to tame her, even though he knew he never could. No one ever would. Should he pursue her this time? She claimed to hate him but he doubted it to be true. What if it wasn’t true and he breaks her heart when he leaves yet again? He might want Janet Buchanan, but Grants didn’t lose things like castles…or hearts to Buchanans. What if his kin didn’t accept her?
“The thought of yer mouth on mine repulses me,” she said shakily, moving back.
She lied. Darach smiled. He didn’t want to think about his kin or past feuds, or anything but Janet’s mouth. She slept in his bed. She thought of him enough to feel the need to write about it—just like he did. It shouldn’t feel like a victory, however small, but it did. And since Darach already knew that victories with Janet would be few, he allowed himself to take enjoyment in it. He took a step closer and dipped his lips to her ear. “Prove it.”
Just as he suspected, she couldn’t. She fell weak when he took her up in the crook of his arm. She didn’t resist his hungry mouth, but searched his with equal abandon.
She awakened every nerve ending, sending scorching heat through Darach’s body. He stopped thinking and kissed her the way he’d dreamed of kissing her long after he left her. With a tight groan and an arm beneath her waist, he hefted her up, closer, if that were possible, and supported her back and her nape while he bent over her and deepened their kiss. He felt her resistance, very slight. Another man might have ignored it. But Darach wasn’t other men. He wanted to fit her between his thighs and let her feel what she brought him to, but he’d promised that he’d only wanted a kiss.
So he steadied her and set her firmly on her feet.
He’d gone daft. It had to be that.
She may have swayed. He knew he did.
She stared at him through hooded eyes and almost made him regret stopping. “If ye ever do that again,” she warned an instant later, looking more clear-headed. “I’ll scratch oot yer eyes.” Without waiting for his reply, she bent and plucked her letters from the trunk. “I’ll send someone tomorrow fer the rest of Margaret’s things. Now move aside and let me pass.”
He obeyed, smiling as she left his chamber. Returning to his bed, he wasn’t completely sure if he wanted to bed her or toss her out the window. He picked up his pillow and smelled her fragrance all over it.
Bed her.
Most definitely.

Guest Blogger~ ANNE BARTON~SCANDALOUS SUMMER NIGHTS BLOT TOUR with Giveaway….

Please help us welcome today’s guest blogger….

{HISTORICAL ROMANCE}

ANNE BARTON

[SCANDALOUS SUMMER NIGHTS]

Scandalous-Summer-Nights-Blog-TourBarton_ScandalousSummerNights_MM

MBA&M: Why use this setting?

SCANDALOUS SUMMER NIGHTS is set mostly in England’s gorgeous Lake District—a beautiful, romantic destination complete with mountains, forests, and lakes. The picturesque location has inspired poets like William Wordsworth, who in 1804 wrote I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. I just love the poem’s last two lines: “And then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils.” The setting provides the perfect backdrop for Olivia’s adventurous, passionate personality and gives James, an archaeologist, plenty of countryside to explore. Best of all, it’s an ideal location for an afternoon picnic or a refreshing dip in the lake.

MBA&M: Who is your all-time go to author for anything historical?

Oh, it’s so difficult to choose just one, but I’d have to say Lisa Kleypas. Her stories have such a wonderful combination of humor, emotion, and sexiness. She creates characters I wish I could have as real-life friends. I hear that she’s working on a new historical series, and I absolutely cannot wait!

MBA&M:  How do you prioritize your time?

It’s a juggling act between family, writing, and work! But I think that’s true for most women, isn’t it? I usually write in the evenings and on weekends—it’s a great way to unwind and relax after a hectic day. I feel so fortunate to be writing the types of stories that I love.

MBA&M: How do you choose your characters for each story?

The Honeycote books are my first series, and when I began it, I really didn’t have a plan as to which characters would get books or when. But I knew that I wanted the stories to feature strong-willed heroines, and since the first book features two sets of sisters, they seemed like great candidates. The next book features Lady Rose, Olivia’s sister, and that will be the last Honeycote novel. For now. 🙂

Thank you, Anne for spending time with us and our readers! Congratulations on your latest release!!

About Anne Barton

Anne Barton began swiping romance novels off her mom’s bookshelf as a teenager, so when she had the chance to spend a semester in London-home to her favorite heroes-she packed her bags and promptly fell in love with the city, its history, and its pubs. She dreamed of writing romance, but somehow ended up a software analyst instead.

Fortunately, a few years and a few careers later, Anne found her way back to writing the stories she loves and in 2011 won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart® for Regency Historical Romance. She lives in Maryland with her husband (who, sadly, is not a peer of the realm-but a great guy nonetheless) and her three children, who try valiantly not to roll their eyes whenever she quotes Jane Austen. Her weaknesses include reality TV, cute-but-impractical shoes, and caffeinated beverages of all kinds.

GUEST BLOGGER~ MAGGIE ANTON~ ENCHANTRESS~

Publication Date: September 2, 2014
Plume Books
Formats: eBook, Paperback
Pages: 400

Series: Rav Hisda’s Daughter
Genre: Historical Fiction/Historical Fantasy

Add to GR Button

Fantastic tales of demons and the Evil Eye, magical incantations, and powerful attractions abound in Enchantress, a novel that weaves together Talmudic lore, ancient Jewish magic, and a timeless love story set in fourth-century Babylonia.

One of the most powerful practitioners of these mysterious arts is Rav Hisda’s daughter, whose innate awareness allows her to possess the skills men lack. With her husband, Rava–whose arcane knowledge of the secret Torah enables him to create a “man” out of earth and to resurrect another rabbi from death–the two brave an evil sorceress, Ashmedai the Demon King, and even the Angel of Death in their quest to safeguard their people, even while putting their romance at risk.

The author of the acclaimed Rashi’s Daughters series and the award-winning Rav Hisda’s Daughter: Apprentice has conjured literary magic in the land where “abracadabra” originated. Based on five years of research and populated with characters from the Talmud, Enchantress brings a pivotal era of Jewish and Christian history to life from the perspective of a courageous and passionate woman.

Praise for Apprentice (Rav Hisda’s Daughter: Book I)

“A lushly detailed look into a fascinatingly unknown time and culture—a tale of Talmud, sorcery, and a most engaging heroine!” —Diana Gabaldon, author of the bestselling Outlander series

Anton, the author of the acclaimed “Rashi’s Daughters” trilogy, has penned her best book to date. Using her extensive knowledge of the Talmud and other historical Jewish writings, she immersed herself in the tractates to uncover a marvelous heroine for this historical novel… Complex discussions of Jewish law and tradition as well as detailed description of the culture and customs of the times enhance truly wonderful storytelling. VERDICT This absorbing novel should be on everyone’s historical fiction reading list.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“Fascinating reading await those who dive into the vividly depicted world of Babylonian Jewry … Anton succeeds brilliantly in drawing us into the formative period leading up to the Talmud … what we have is the work of a master craftswoman set upon repairing a major gap in Jewish literature —Philadelphia Jewish Voice

“Rav Hisda’s Daughter provides a wealth of historical detail about Jewish life in Babylon and Israel in the 3rd century CE. It depicts the daily life and coming of age of a prominent rabbi’s daughter rather than propelling its reader through a traditional arc of action with a crisis and resolution. Its interest lies in its portrayal of the sorcery, incantations, and women’s customs in this exotic, faraway period of time and place, sometimes against the backdrop of war.” —Historical Novel Society

Praise for the Rashi’s Daughters Trilogy

“Anton delivers a tour de force . . . [Readers] will fly through the pages and come away wishing for more.” –Library Journal (starred review)

“A compelling combination of drama, suspense, and romance.” –Lilith magazine

About the Author

Maggie Anton was born Margaret Antonofsky in Los Angeles, California. Raised in a secular, socialist household, she reached adulthood with little knowledge of her Jewish religion. All that changed when David Parkhurst, who was to become her husband, entered her life, and they both discovered Judaism as adults. That was the start of a lifetime of Jewish education, synagogue involvement, and ritual observance. In 2006, Anton retired from being a clinical chemist in Kaiser Permanente’s Biochemical Genetics Laboratory to become a fulltime writer.

In the early 1990′s, Anton learned about a women’s Talmud class taught by Rachel Adler, now a professor at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles. She became intrigued with the idea that Rashi, one of the greatest Jewish scholars ever, had no sons, only three daughters. Slowly but surely, she began to research the family and the time in which they lived. Much was written about Rashi, but almost nothing of the daughters, except their names and the names of their husbands. Legend has it that Rashi’s daughters were learned in a time when women were traditionally forbidden to study the sacred texts. These forgotten women seemed ripe for rediscovery, and the idea of a trilogy of historical novels about them was born.

After the success of “Rashi’s Daughters” Anton started researching the lives of women in 4th-century Babylonia, where the Talmud was being created. Surprised by the prevalence of sorcery among rabbinic families, she wrote “Rav Hisda’s Daughter: Bk 1 – Apprentice,” which was a 2012 National Jewish Book Award Fiction finalist and a Library Journal pick for Best Historical Fiction.

MY THOUGHTS:
AFTER THE FOG by Kathleen Shoop is an interesting Romantic Suspense set in 1948, Donora, Pennsylvania, a steel town where the “killing smog” takes place. A fascinating tale of endurance, secrets, truimphs, adversity, hope and sacrifices. Heartfelt and a tear-jerker with historical elements based on true facts. Emotional as well as compelling. Ms. Shoop pulls the reader into this soap opera type tale of familial secrets, environmental issues and so much more. Well written with engaging characters, and an intriguing storyline.  Don’t let the length of this tale, about 420 pages, stop you from reading “After the Fog”. A satisfying read!

Please help us welcome today’s guest blogger, Elizabeth Hoyt…
MBA&M:  Why this setting?

Georgian (1700s) London was an infinitely fascinating place with the very rich (gilding everything they owned) rubbing shoulders with people so poor entire families lived in one room. Also, the men wore heels.

MBA&M: How many books will be in this series?

I’m contracted through nine books. I plan more, though. Many more. 😉

MBA&M:  What is the single most important thing you have every done?

Given birth. To my two daughters. So those are the TWO most important things I’ve done.

MBA&M:  What is the first book you remember reading as a young child, if you can remember?

The first book read to me was THE BEST NEST. The first book I remember reading by myself was LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS.

Thank you for stopping by today! We at MBA&M always enjoys your visits as well as your stories!

DARLING BEAST excerpt…

He dropped his satchel and took up the shovel, sticking it into the base of one of the dead bushes, striking at the root mass. The blade only went halfway into the soil, so he jumped with both feet on the shoulders of the blade, driving it the rest of the way down. He could feel as the blade sliced through the roots and he grunted with satisfaction. He’d spent part of the previous night sharpening the shovel to do just that. Gingerly he began prying with the handle—too hard a movement and he’d snap it, or worse, the iron blade itself. He’d already lost two shovels this spring.
“You don’t mind if I continue?” he heard Miss Stump ask. “It’s just that I need to finish writing this soon—very soon.”
He glanced up curiously at that, wondering at the worried line between her brows as she stared down at her manuscript. Makepeace had said she couldn’t get acting work at the moment. Perhaps this was her only means of making money.
He shook his head in reply.
“I’m only in the third act,” she said absently. “My heroine has gambled away all her brother’s money because, well, she’s dressed as her brother.”
She glanced up in time to catch his raised eyebrows.
“It’s a comedy called A Wastrel Reform’d.” She shrugged. “A complicated comedy because right now no one knows who anyone is. There’s twins—a brother and sister—named Wastrel, and the brother has convinced his sister—her Christian name is Cecily—to pretend to be he so that he might seduce Lady Pamela’s maid, and he’s engaged to her—Lady Pamela, not her maid.”
She took a breath and Apollo slowly smiled, because against all odds, he’d understood everything she’d just said.
Miss Stump grinned back. “It’s silly, I know, but that’s what comedy is, really—a lot of silly things happening, one after another.” She glanced down at her play, running her finger down the page. “So Cecily, dressed as Adam—that’s the brother—has lost terribly at a hand of cards to Lord Pimberly. Oh! That’s Fanny—the maid’s—father, and Lady Pamela’s scorned suitor. Although of course no one knows that Pimberly is Fanny’s father, otherwise she wouldn’t be a lady’s maid, now would she?”
Apollo leaned on his shovel and cocked an eyebrow.
“Kidnapped at birth, naturally,” she replied. “But fortunately she has quite a distinctive birthmark. Right here.” She tapped the upper slope of her right breast.
Apollo defied any man not to follow the direction of her finger. She had quite a lovely breast, gently swelling above the severe square neckline of her dress and modestly covered by a filmy fichu.
“Yes, well.” Her husky voice made him raise his gaze. Her cheeks had pinkened, but that might’ve been the wind. “In any case, I’m writing a scene between Cecily and Lord Pimberly in which Pimberly demands his money and Cecily doesn’t have it. And naturally he’s begun to realize he’s attracted to her at the same time.”
She cleared her throat.
He nodded, messing a bit with his shovel to look as if he were still working. Actually, he was beginning to fear that the blade was stuck in the roots.
Miss Stump glanced at her manuscript and slipped back into what he now knew was Cecily—the sister dressed as her brother. “Do you judge a gentleman by his bits, my lord?”
She turned and placed her fists on her hips again, in the wide-legged stance. “Pardon me, but I said chits.”
Turn. Her hands dropped. “And yet, ’tis still your manly bits we discuss.” She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. “No?”
He screwed his mouth to the side and reluctantly shook his head.
“Blast!” she exclaimed under her breath, bending to the paper. She scratched out something and then froze, obviously thinking.
He wasn’t even pretending to work anymore.
She gasped and then hunched over her manuscript, scribbling furiously before straightening, a gleam of triumph in her eye.
She tossed her head as Cecily. “Indeed, and would you know a chit should you see one?”
Now she was a baffled Pimberly. “Naturally.”
“Oh, my lord?” She turned her head and looked over her shoulder through lowered lashes at the imaginary Pimberly, all daring flirtation. “And how is that, may I ask?”
“How?”
“How does a gentleman of your unsurpassed perception differentiate a chit from a bit?”
And she batted her eyelashes.
The juxtaposition between the ribaldry of her words and the innocence of her expression was so silly, so utterly enchanting, that Apollo couldn’t help it: he threw back his head and laughed.

When Lila’s restoration project is threatened before it even begins, she turns to Jake for help. Working together stirs up old feelings, but while Lila and Jake always sizzle between the sheets—or wherever the moment takes them—it will involve some sweet-talking and finesse to bring these two together.

MY THOUGHT:

DECONSTRUCTING LILA by Shannon Leigh is an interesting Contemporary Romance. It’s the tale of Lila Gentry and Jake, her estranged husband. Lila has gone back to Texas to restore the old whorehouse,Chisholm Trail, her great-great-grandmother was the madam of in the 1880’s and win back her estranged husband.

Filled with sizzling passionate scenes, second chances, history, fear, complications and romance. There is also a subplot of Miss Pru, the madam and Luke Pierce, a rancher told through Miss Pru’s journal. There is the added drama of restoring the old whorehouse as well as Jake’s illness.
Well written, with a bit of history and lots of passion. You can’t help but enjoy this wickedly delicious tale mixed with contemporary and historical romance.
I enjoyed the dialogue between the characters, and I think the journey was an added bonus. Well done!

MY THOUGHTS:

STARS, STOCKINGS, & SHEPHERDS by Shersta Chabot is an meaningful Christmas traditions/Holiday symbols. What a delightful as well as educational book. The illustrations are by Corey Egbert and they are fantastic.

I had forgot a lot of the symbols of the Christmas season meanings, how very sad for me. Some I knew, such as the Candy Cane, The Wise Men, Jesus, and many more. The author has done an exceptional job of the definitions, explanations, and the meaning of Christmas. I loved this book. Easy to read, easy to follow. Young readers may need a bit of help reading, but I feel they will delight with this book. The pictures are vivid, and exciting.

A keeper for any library and true treasure for your holiday reading. Did you know…the meaning of the Christmas Lights? or the meaning of the Christmas Tree? Wreaths? or Carols? Well these and so many more symbols are explained. I would highly recommend this title to anyone who enjoys the Christmas season, and all the dressing pertaining to the Christmas season. Every parent, grandparent, church teacher really should get this title. Well done!!
