Five Things I Learned Writing Pirates I can Relate to my Own Life

Pirates were cool dudes. They were free spirits. Maybe even they were the original hippies. They floated about the seas on borrowed vessels, from island to island, coastal town to coastal town, nary a care in the world. They often partied all night and slept until they woke up. They loved their lifestyle, although not everyone else understood it.

I have that same free spirit mentality flowing in my blood. I love to sleep until I wake up, although I don’t party all night. Usually I’m up writing or working on a project. (wild woman here) People think it’s cool to be a writer, even though they don’t understand how it can be your full time job. So, pirates taught me to be cool with being cool, just the way I am.

Pirates charted their own course. Although it was not so cool to chart your own course in life at the pain and suffering of others, nevertheless, pirates went “indie” early on, didn’t work for “the man” and reported only to themselves. The raping and pillaging notwithstanding, pirates were ahead of the game.

It took me a while to chart my own course in life. Even though I am a product of the 60s and 70s free spirit generation, I grew up in a conservative little town, within a conservative little family. Things were expected. High school, college graduation, a strong work ethic, get a job, pay your bills. I did what was expected for a lot of years, but the wayward pirate inside of me constantly whispered “you need to write” “you need to be in control of your life” “you need to quit your day job.”

Oops. I quit my day job. I’m now a rogue pirate writer not working for the man. I am charting my own course, and I am still working hard and paying my bills. Happily.

Pirates had many names. I can relate. Pirates often didn’t want their bad reputation going back on their families, so they changed their names. This is why Edward Teach, or Edward Thatch, (even if those were his real names) changed his name to Blackbeard. And this is why I have pen names. Not that I think I’ll ruin my family’s reputation, but in many cases, it’s just to keep my writing and personal lives separate. And oh, please don’t tell my mother about my erotica pen name….

Pirates loved the ocean. They lived the “salt life.” What is the salt life? (Maybe see #1 above?) I’ve seen the bumper and window stickers, the t-shirts and ball caps. I think I know what it means but to be sure, I had to look it up. Here is what it means to live the salt life. According to the website at the previous link, “Salt Life is an authentic, aspirational and lifestyle brand that embraces those who love the ocean and everything associated with living the “Salt Life”.” Cool. Oh, so very cool. The Urban Dictionary also defines as “a surfer, bodyboarder, or general beach bum whose life centered around the ocean or related beach going activities.” See, pirates were so ahead of their times, again!

It was probably the early 90s when I was lured by the ocean and sand and surf. Once there, I could feel the pull, and it lures me back year after year….

Pirates liked pretty things. Like baubles, and gold, and jewels, and buried treasure. I’m a woman, so I like these things too. In fact, in my book, Brazen, my heroine, Tory, was drawn to a silver-plated, bejeweled skull in a pirate gift shop on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. See?

The Soul Mates Series

Maddie James

Soul Mates, Book One

Can souls touch through time and hold on, when all odds are against them?

Claire Winslow vacations on an East Coast barrier island, content with her life and her potential future—until the illusion of a man walking the misty shore haunts her. Then one kiss—a beautiful, soulful, stolen kiss in the night—and her life changes forever.

Nearly 300 years past, Jack Porter is in hot pursuit of his kidnapped wife. Not an easy feat considering the year is 1718 and the kidnapper is the notorious pirate Blackbeard aka Edward Teach. Determined to rescue his wife and take the pirate’s head in the process, Jack steals aboard the pirate’s ship to save her.

Entranced sends Jack and Claire on a wild search through time, not only for the resolution to a powerful attraction between them, but also for a historical artifact that holds the key to their future happiness—the coveted silver-plated chalice made from Blackbeard’s skull.

Soul Mates, Book Two

Can lost souls reunite across time when all hope at love has been abandoned, and demons of the past refuse to go away?

Pitched from a ship during a violent storm in the year 1746, Victoria Porter washes ashore, soon to be rescued by a man on a strange mechanical beast who whisks her into a world beyond anything she could have imagined.

In 2014, Colton MacKenzie fears he has written his last bestselling horror novel until he discovers two things—The Cult of Teach, and a tantalizing nymph wandering the Ocracoke Island seashore. Fascinated by the history that surrounds the Legend of Blackbeard’s Chalice, he seeks to learn more about these modern-day pirates, and hopefully write a bestseller using the premise. He’d planned on riding this ride solo until the strange waif on the back of his Harley touches him in ways his demons hadn’t let anyone touch him in a long, long time….

An abridged excerpt from Brazen, Book Two, Soul Mates Series:

Colt led her another aisle away and as they were about to turn the corner, a sparkling object in a darkened corner of the room caught her eye. It made her halt outright, dragging Colt back to her side.
Sitting on a black velvet covered table, with a small light shining down and illuminating its silver brilliance, sat the chalice.
Blackbeard’s Chalice.
“Ah, I see you’ve found me pretty.” The strong island voice was behind her now. Close. Too close. So close she could inhale the stench of him.
“What?” She whirled to face him.
“My pretty cup. What do ya think? Made from Blackbeard’s skull, itself. Or so they say. Have ya seen anything so pretty in your life, lass?”
Tory glanced at Colt, whose gaze was pinned to the thing.
“Is it real?” he asked. “The real one?”
A bellow of laughter split the stale air in the room. Both she and Colt tore their gazes away to look at the man’s face.
“Ah, but I could wish. One more quest in me search to find the bastard’s treasure. To possess the chalice would be a blessing. But sadly, this is only a fine-honed replica.” Then he winked, leaning closer to Tory. “At least that’s what I tell the people.”
“The jewels are different,” she muttered.
The man stepped closer. Tory avoided his gaze. “What say ya, missy? The jewels are different? And how would a young miss as yerself know such a thing?”
“Different than she thought they would be.” Colt put himself between her and the man. “Fascinating story, chap. I would love to speak with you more about that sometime. I’m a writer, you see, and I’m writing a book on pirate folklore in the area. A fictional account, however, and perhaps I’ll come back and chat with you another day.”
And with that, he ushered her quickly toward the front of the store, his grip tight on her elbow and his stride so long it was difficult for her shorter legs to keep up with him.
“Shut up, Tory,” he hissed under his breath.
When the door slammed behind them and she heard the tinkle of the bell cease, she kept up with six of his long strides down the street, and then stopped abruptly and jerked her arm away.
“There are no rubies in Blackbeard’s Chalice. Only emeralds and diamonds and one lone sapphire. No rubies.” She exhaled deeply as she said the words.
He moved closer and spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper. “And how do you know this?”
She knew she might as well give him everything. “Because I possess the real Blackbeard’s Chalice, Colt. It belongs to me. My family.”

Soul Mates, Book Four

Can wandering souls collide and tame their wanderlust long enough to fall in love?

Katie MacKenzie is a wanderer. With her mother dead, her father in prison, and her siblings scattered hither and yon, she refuses to risk the connectedness of a family again. Family means drama and emotions, good and bad. But when you are on your own, you have only your own drama to deal with. Family is the one thing she does not want.

But she’s pregnant. Alone. And for the first time in her life, more than a little frightened of her future. Her wandering days may soon be over, but that gut-wrenching search for… something, still nags at her. Calls her. And leaves her yearning for peace.

A peace that is difficult to come by. She is willing and prepared to go it alone. And all goes well, until a needy, homeless, and somewhat unworldly stranger enters her life….

Soul Mates, Book Five

Coming soon …

Can the bonds of parted spirit mates reconnect through the heart, when the mind and soul have forgotten they have ever loved?

Spirits often have purposes and Claire Porter’s is no different. She possesses a healing soul. God feels her spirit is needed on earth and delivers her a particular task—to seek out and heal a lost family; to reunite the siblings and bring them peace. What God doesn’t tell her is that this family is her own—those of her children. Jackson, Victoria, and Jeremiah, are scattered about in contemporary times, and know nothing of each other’s lives.

But the task comes with conditions. God erases any memory of her children, or of their father, and sends her to earth in a new body, a new name, new life. Trust your spirit and let it guide you, he tells her.

Just as he could not bear to watch his wife die, Jack Porter’s spirit cannot fathom that he will be separated once more from his beloved Claire. He begs mercy with the Heavenly Father only to be told that he should trust and be patient. Jack Porter is not a patient man. His restless soul aches for his lost love and he continues to test God’s resolve. So God gives him an ultimatum—he will send Jack back to earth but only under the same conditions as Claire. Jack agrees and God challenges him to the same quest, to find his spirit mate and reunite his family—with no knowledge of their existence.

Entwined brings The Soul Mates Series to a close as Claire and Jack again seek out their spirit mates, while reuniting their entire family in the same century.

Greed Manifesto, Greed Series #4 by John Mefford – with rafflecopter giveaway

Everyone needs a guardian angel, especially children of this world who are tossed aside like yesterday’s trash. But what if that angel is cloaked in vengeance, immune to human qualities of remorse or compassion, seemingly carrying a torch for justice, yet driven by a tenacious indignation.

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of San Francisco and all of its fleeting secrets, Michael attempts to re-boot his life, only to see death drop inches from his feet. Awakened from a seemingly catatonic state, and emboldened by a spirited friendship from his past, the former journalist is compelled to chase down the truth behind a murder–and the natural beauty connected to it.

But what he finds isn’t what it appears.

Can a price tag be associated with life? What about death…on a global scale? Robbed of his memory, beaten to an inch of his life, yet unwavering in his quest to cease an act of terror, Michael races against time to pursue an enemy bound by an unspeakable cause–or so it seems.

The fourth book in the Greed series, GREED MANIFESTO, spins a tale so wickedly conceived, you won’t believe what you read. Until you do.

Also in the Greed SeriesFATAL GREED – Greed Series #1

Behind every corporate takeover executives pull levers this way and that, squeezing the last profitable nickel out of the deal. But no one knows the true intent of every so-called merger.
No one knows the secret bonds that exist.
An Indian technology giant swallows up another private company that has deep roots in North Texas. For one unassuming man the thought of layoffs, of losing his own job to a bunch of arrogant assholes feels like a kick to the jewels.

Until the day Michael’s life changes forever.

Perverse alliances. A gruesome murder. An affair of the heart. A spiraling string of events thrusts Michael into a life-or-death fight to save a tortured soul and hunt down a brutal killer…one who lurks closer than he ever imagined.
LETHAL GREED – Greed Series #2

How often do start-up companies promise untold riches? How many of those firms are drug cartels?

Seduced by an insatiable urge to escape reality, North Texas teens are falling prey to the one weakness parents fear most about their kids—taking illicit drugs. More than a thousand miles away, two contemptible hooligans plot their path to the top of an emerging start-up company. But what will it cost them?

With his city under siege by a series of drug deaths and a kidnapping, Michael and those closest to him are sucked into a twister so toxic and destructive, no one will be the same in its wake.

From the jagged mountains and alluring beaches of Mexico to the suburban concrete jungle in North Texas, Michael defends an entire drug-ravaged generation against ruthless killers who attack on every front possible. And just when you think the dragon has been sleighed, a vile act of cruelty threatens to shred his family.

WICKED GREED – Greed Series #3

Torture disfigures and maims, traumatizing a person’s psyche. It also torments the lives they…touch.

A sick, twisted email lands at journalism outlets across the south, referencing innocent little animals and primal urges, Hollywood movie stars and women of a certain ilk, tearing flesh from bone. The haunting note tests Michael’s over-protective nature, and he questions if it’s just a prank from a sheltered computer geek, or a prophetic sign of a future heinous act,

A shadow of death swallows up one beautiful young lady after another…and no one can stop it. But what force is behind this string of sadistic killings, pulling the strings, toying with pretty girls who want nothing more than to meet Mr. Right? As Michael and his band of brothers (and sister) track a series of bizarre murders in southern college towns—slowly piecing together what the FBI can’t—a ruthless monster strikes close to home.

When blood pours from the soul you love, the pain isn’t of this world.

In the end, lives will be forever changed. And one will not survive.

Finished teaser 6

She was smiling at Drayton, thinking she needed to spend more time with him like this, since she’d been focused a lot more on Mike than on him lately, when he asked into the silence, “What are you thinking about?”

“You,” she admitted, putting down her glass and leaning back in her seat. “Us. Our relationship. Do you ever want any more than what we have?”

She had no idea why she’d voiced the question that had been lingering in her mind for a couple of months now. She knew it went beyond the bounds of their established relationship. But it was honest, and Drayton felt safe at the moment. She really wanted to know.

He blinked slowly. Glanced away for a moment. Then turned back to meet her gaze. “I’m happy with the way things are.”

She gave a little nod, feeling a drop of disappointment. “Oh. Okay.”

“Aren’t you happy?”

“I am. I mean, what girl wouldn’t want great sex with two amazing guys. But, still, sometimes I wonder…it just sometimes feels like something is missing.”

He shook his head and leaned toward her. “Nothing is missing. Everyone, in any kind of relationship, sometimes wonders if something is missing. That’s because life can never offer us everything. We choose what’s most important to us and accept that there are some things we’ll never have. If you have some romantic notion about getting everything without giving up anything, you’ll always be disappointed. Life isn’t about perfect happy endings. They just don’t exist. It’s about choosing. And then about giving up what we don’t choose.”

She thought about his words and then nodded slowly. “Yeah. I know you’re right about that. But don’t you ever want to be close to us—with more than just your body.”

Q/A with Claire Kent:

Tell us a bit about yourself. What makes you tick?
The two things I love to do most in the world is write and teach literature. I was pretending to teach school when I was four years old, and I wrote my first novel when I was twelve. Right now, I’m able to do both teach and write. It’s basically two full-time jobs, but it’s a great place to be. I also love dogs and books and ice-cream.

Why writing?

My mind has always been full of stories. Even if I’m not writing, I’m always making up stories in my head. It just makes more sense to actually write them down so other people can read them too.
Which authors have influenced your writing?

Too many really to count. My early influences were Louisa May Alcott and Maud Hart Lovelace. (I loved the Betsy, Tacy, and Tib books so much!). Then there have been so many others, ranging from Patricia Veryan to Agatha Christie. I think my deepest influences are those who don’t even write in my genre.

I always have a few favorite scenes when I’m writing a book. They aren’t always the big action scenes, or the even the first kiss. Sometimes they are the unplanned moments between characters that just happened. This excerpt is one of those little moments that shows so much about Jacquie and Felan. He’s always thinking of the big picture, the cause and what is best for everyone, but Jacquie reminds him that if he’s not around then none of that matters. Even though he is the Prince of Annwyn, he is still a person and is important in his own right.
In that respect Jacquie balances Felan, and in turn he reminds her that she is more than just a coffee shop waitress. She is his love and the future Queen of Annwyn. In his eyes she isn’t just a replaceable mortal woman and she never has been.
I think at some point everyone has experienced that moment of being swept up in the drama and forgotten to stop and think of the smaller things. If we take care of the little things, the big things will fall into place. While we may not all be fighting for our lives and Annwyn it’s something to remember.

Jacqui was awake when he walked back into the bedroom. “I thought you’d left already.”
“I wouldn’t go without a kiss for luck.” Or farewell. He knew the thought shouldn’t even be in his mind, but only a fool failed to look at all possible outcomes. He’d set the dice in motion, now he was waiting for them to land—hopefully in his favor.
Her lips curved, but it was forced. He knew exactly how she felt.
He picked up his clothing and started dressing. Plain, dark purple clothes—the winter purple that was almost black—the padded shirt, and then the silver chainmail. He didn’t bother with a cloak that could tangle around him. However, he put on two knives, one on his waist and one in his boot, plus his sword.
“What is Annwyn like in summer?”
Felan stopped and turned. “Like the most perfect day.” If he closed his eyes, he knew he could summon up the memory, even if he couldn’t feel the sun and heat on his skin. “Remember when we went hiking and had the picnic, how the place had felt deserted and yet full of life?” Birds and chipmunks and butterflies had been all around them even though the track had been less than twenty yards away, and yet it had felt as though they were the only people. It hadn’t been too hot or cold but sunny and with a light breeze. It was as close to perfect as he could ever remember experiencing in the mortal world. That had been the day he’d told Jacqui what he was. They’d spent hours talking about what that had meant, and he’d seen the wariness in her eyes fade to acceptance and understanding. He hoped she’d have that same chance here. “It’s a lot like that. Magical and yet ordinary. And it will last until we cease to rule.”
She frowned as if remembering, then nodded slowly. “And spring?”
“Spring will allow the leaves to grow, for flowers to bud, and the grass to return…but it won’t reach its full lushness and summer until our child is born. I am okay with that. There is no need to just live in summer. Perhaps a long spring is what the Court needs to remember not to take summer for granted.” They needed the long spring to adjust to their new roles and reformed relationship. He drew her into an embrace. “We can do this.”
“I know. I just…I just need to know what I am hoping for. What you are fighting for.”
“I’m fighting for everyone—you, the baby, me, Annwyn, and all of the mortal world.”
Jacqui drew back. “Just fight to live, Felan. Let the rest fall into place.”

ONE IN A MILLION by Jill Shalvis is an interesting Contemporary Romance set in Lucky Harbor. #12 in the “Lucky Harbor” series, but can be read  as a stand alone. This is to be the last in this amazing series. I am sure we all hate to see this wonderful series end, but I have faith, there will be more to come on the horizon. If you have not read a Jill Shalvis’ story, than I would suggest you start at the beginning, with “Simply Irresistible”.

THE NUTCRACKER by E. T. A. Hoffmann

Penguin Christmas Classics honor the power of literature to keep on giving through the ages. The five volumes in the series are not only our most beloved Christmas tales; they also have given us much of what we love about the holiday itself. A CHRISTMAS CAROL revived in Victorian England such Christmas hallmarks as the Christmas tree, holiday cards, and caroling. The Yuletide yarns of Anthony Trollope popularized throughout the British Empire and around the world the trappings of Christmas in London. The holiday tales of Louisa May Alcott shaped the ideal of an American Christmas. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS brought forth some of our earliest Christmas traditions as passed down through folk tales. And THE NUTCRACKER inspired the most famous ballet in history, one seen by millions in the twilight of every year.

Beautifully designed—with foil-stamped jackets, decorative endpapers, and nameplates for personalization—and printed in a small trim size that makes them perfect stocking stuffers, Penguin Christmas Classics embody the spirit of giving that is at the heart of our most time-honored stories about the holiday.

First published on December 19, 1843, A Christmas Carol was an instant classic: Londoners thronged to hear Dickens read it in person and bought out the first printing in days. Its reception was so ecstatic that it is credited with helping to revive interest among the Victorians in Christmas traditions, including caroling and holiday cards, as well as inciting an unexpected wave of charitable giving from Britain’s Industrial Age robber barons. Originally conceived as a pamphlet against exploitative capitalism before taking its current form, it has inspired dozens of theatrical and movie adaptions, and its characters, from Scrooge to Tiny Tim, are forever inscribed in our hearts and minds.

What a delightful Victorian era classic. The illustrations are delightful and humorous. I have read this story over and over, and watched movies. But I must say, I never tire of this beautiful Christmas tradition and it’s characters.

Penguin Classics has redesigned this wonderful tale of Ebenezer Scrooge,  his ghosts and the realization of his life. “Bah! Humbug” and all of that. My hat is off to Penguin Classic for re-inventing or rather re-publishing this fabulous Christmas Classic. Easy to read for Young readers as well as older readers, parents and grandparents alike. Educators, your students will love you for this wonderful addition to your library. I would highly recommend this wonderful classic. Well done! This is a definite treasure and a keeper, not counting an excellent Christmas stocking stuffer. Yes, it is the perfect size to use for a stocking stuffer.

 by Anthony Trollope

Penguin Classics; ISBN: 9780143122470; Hardcover; $16.00; On-Sale: October 7, 2014

Christmas at Thompson Hall brings together the best of the Christmas stories of Anthony Trollope, one of the most successful, prolific, and respected English novelists of the nineteenth century. Characterized by insightful, psychologically rich, and sometimes wryly humorous depictions of the middle class and gentry of Victorian England—and inspired occasionally by missives in the “lost letter” box of the provincial post office that Trollope ran—these tales helped to enshrine the traditions of the decorated Christmas tree, the holiday turkey, and the giving of store-bought gifts. Today, they open a window into a time when carolers filled the streets and each house’s door displayed a wreath of evergreen boughs, a time at once distant and yet startlingly familiar.

CHRISTMAS AT THOMPSON HALL & OTHER CHJRISTMAS STORIES by Anthony Trollope is another Penguin Christmas Classic. In this collection, we have five of Mr. Trollope’s treasured titles, “Christmas At Thompson HAll”, “Christmas Day at Kirkbly Cottage”, “The Mistletoe Bough”, “The Two Generals” and “Not If I Know It”. It would be hard to pick my favorite of these stories. All are nineteenth century stories. These stories help to define Christmas traditions, with the Christmas tree, the turkey, giving of gifts, store brought gifts, carolers, the wealth on the door and the magic of the Christmas season. A classic to be sure and one to be treasured and kept in your library. Easy to read, well written with engaging characters brings this story to light for the holiday season. I have not read of these stories, or heard of them, myself, but I was thrilled to be reading one and every one of them. Thanks, Penguin Classic for this amazing chance to read this classic.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS: And Other Christmas Stories

by Louisa May Alcott

Penguin Classics; ISBN: 9780143122463; Hardcover; $16.00; On-Sale: October 7, 2014

A Merry Christmas collects the treasured holiday tales of Louisa May Alcott, from the dearly familiar Yuletide benevolence of Marmee and her “little women” to the timeless “What Love Can Do,” wherein the residents of a boarding house come together to make a lovely Christmas for two poor girls. Wildly popular at the time of their publication—readers deluged Alcott with letters demanding sequels—and drawing on Alcott’s family and experiences in the abolitionist and women’s suffrage movements, these stories have the authentic texture and detail of Christmas in nineteenth-century America, while their emphasis on generosity and charity make them timeless embodiments of the Christmas spirit.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS & OTHER CHRISTMAS STORIES by Louisa May Alcott is a wonderful Penguin Christmas Classic. This one is a collection of treasured tales of the holiday season. “A Merry Christmas”, “Kate’s Choice”, “The Quiet Little Woman”, “Tilly’s  Christmas”, “What Love Can Do”, “Rosa’s Tale” and “Mrs. Podgers’ Teapot”.

A beautifully written tale of a boardinghouse, it’s residents, and their desire to bring a wonderful Christmas to two poor little girls. This is an American nineteenth-century tale. Well written, with an emphasis on charity, generosity, faith, the human spirit, and the magic of Christmas. A must read, and another treasure for your library.

Penguin Classics; ISBN: Hardcover; $16.00; On-Sale: October 7, 2014

Written in 1831 by the father of Russian literature, this uproarious tale tells of the blacksmith Vakula’s battle with the devil, who has stolen the moon and hidden it in his pocket, allowing him to wreak havoc on the village of Dikanka. Both the devil and Vakula are in love with Oksana, the most beautiful girl in Dikanka. Vakula is determined to win her over; the devil, equally determined, unleashes a snowstorm to thwart Vakula’s efforts. Zany and mischievous, and drawing inspiration from the folk tales of Gogol’s far-flung village in Ukraine, The Night Before Christmas is the basis for many movie and opera adaptations, and is still read aloud to children on Christmas Eve in Ukraine and Russia.

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS by Nikolai Gogol, translated by Joachim Neugroschel is another Penguin Christmas Classic. Written in 1831, it is not your everyday “Night Before Christmas” tale. This is the tale of the battle between the devil, and blacksmith Vakula. In this version, the devil is wreaking havoc on the small village of Dilanka, Ukraine. He is also in love with the beautiful, Oksana, the most beautiful girl in Dilanka, and the one Vakula loves himself. An interesting, an mischievous, based on folklore of the Ukraine. Entertaining and interesting. Please be aware it has been translated, and does have some usual and hard to pronounce names, otherwise, and interesting read, with holiday spirit and the trials of evil vs good. While, this was not my favorite of these classics, it was an enjoyable read, none the less and one I would recommend to have in your holiday collection.

Written in 1816 by one of the leaders of German Romanticism for his children, nephews, and nieces, The Nutcracker captures better than any other story a child’s wonder at Christmas. The gift of a handsomely decorated nutcracker from a mysterious uncle sets the stage for a Christmas Eve like no other for the little girl Marie. That night, Marie’s extraordinary present comes to life, defends her from the taunting Mouse King, and whisks her off to the Kingdom of Dolls. The inspiration for the classic ballet, E. T. A. Hoffmann’s irresistible tale of magic and childhood adventure continues to captivate readers of all ages. Today, many of the most enchanting symbols of Christmas, from nutcrackers to sugar plums to mistletoe, are still imbued with the power of this story.

THE NUTCRACKER by E. T. A. Hoffmann, translated by Joachim Neugroschel. Another Penguin Christmas Classic. Originally written in 1816. This is one of my favorite tale, so far, in this collection of Christmas Classics. It is the tale of a little girl, Marie, whose present of a Nutcracker, comes to life to protect her from the evil Mouse King and whists her away to the Kingdom of Dolls. What a classic! A classic ballet, that comes to life on every page, with the adventure of childhood, will capture every readers heart. With the magic of Christmas, the adventure of a little girl, and the symbols of Christmas, readers of all ages, will enjoy this captivating tale of holiday magic, the Christmas spirit, and the enchantment of Christmas, from the nutcrackers, to sugar plums to the very popular mistletoe, the power of “The Nutcracker” will still leave you in awe. I loved this story! Well done! Another, delightful tale of the Christmas season. The Rake’s Handbook (Including Field Guide) by Sally Orr (Historical Romance; The Rake’s Handbook, Book 1; ISBN: 9781492602118)

The definitive guide to seduction…

The Rake’s Handbook was written on a dare, and soon took the ton by storm. Now its author, Ross Thornbury, is publicly reviled by the ladies—who are, of course, forbidden to read the handbook—but privately revered by the gentlemen. Unfortunately, Ross’s notoriety is working against him and he flees London painfully aware of the shortcomings of his own jaded heart.

Spirited young widow Elinor Colton lives next to Ross’s country estate. She’s appalled not only by his rakish reputation, but also by his progressive industrial plans. Elinor is sure she is immune to Ross’s seductive ways. But he keeps coming around…impressing her with his vision for England’s future and stunning her with his smiles.

How does one resist the man who wrote the manual on love?

About the Author:

Sally Orr worked for thirty years in medical research, specializing in the discovery of gene function. After joining an English history message board, she posted many, many examples of absolute tomfoolery. As a result, a cyber-friend challenged her to write a novel. Since she is a hopeless Anglophile, it’s not surprising that her first book is a Regency romance. Sally lives with her husband in San Diego, surrounded by too many nerdy books and not enough old English cars.

Excerpt: “You really are a rake,” she whispered, the sight and feel of their joined hands warming her cheeks. “A proper gentleman would never hold a lady thus. I have been warned about your charms. Perhaps I too should write everything down. Pen a handbook to instruct my widowed sisters what to expect upon attempted seduction and how to fight it.” “Factual or satirical?” She bit her lower lip to stop an indelicate reply. “I could write that handbook too.” His boast made her smile. “I seem to have found another trait of a rake.” “Humph. I’d be delighted to show you all of my traits. Perhaps start with chapter one?” The determination in his voice indicated he was quite willing to comply. “Please do, sir,” she replied in a facetious tone, tugging her hand free. “But I can already tell that I’ll stop reading your book after the table of contents. You know, all of those funny pages in the front of the book numbered v and i.” He chuckled softly, then stared at her until he captured her gaze. “My handbook starts with fine eyes.” He reached up and swept back a ringlet that had fallen over her eye and carefully tucked the curl under her bonnet. Her heartbeat raced. “The eyes are followed by a notable vee.” His gaze lowered to the upper edge of her bodice and lingered in the center. “Oh my, if that’s the table of contents, I don’t dare read chapter one.” “I’d be pleased to read you all of the chapters. There are a total of . . .” He glanced at her leisurely, from the top of her leghorn bonnet down to her sensible half boots. His focus returned up to her neck—almost. His chest broadened as he inhaled. “Ten.” “Ten.” He gave her a smoldering look from under heavy lashes. “Ten in volume one,” he continued in a silky baritone. “Let’s start with chapter one.” He leaned forward slowly, staring at her mouth, as if he might take liberties and kiss her. The distance between them shortened to inches. Close enough to feel his warm breath.

He went to work on his shirt buttons. His collar was soon wide open revealing a generous show of muscular chest that make her hands itch to rip it off him. She diverted her gaze and curled her itchy hands by her sides.

“Have no fear, cowboy,” Nikki replied in a tone meant to disguise the warm flush that had come over her. “I corralled all my wild impulses long ago.”

“Did you, now?” He still stood in doorway, head cocked. “Somehow, I think you may have missed a few strays.”

“Maybe I need to make myself clearer. I have an aversion to cocky cowboys.”

Just keep telling yourself that, Nikki. Maybe if you repeat it often enough it’ll become true.

“Is that so?” His brows flew upward. “I can’t say I ever met a woman with an actual aversion to me.”

“Don’t take it personally. It’s nothing against you in particular, but to your type.”

“And what do you think you know about my type?”

“Since I don’t have a pole handy, enough to keep you at arms-length. Besides that, this whole line of conversation is entirely inappropriate in light of professional ethics, don’t you think? You are my attorney, after all.”

“Well, darlin’,” he scratched his unshaven jaw, “there’s a little hitch to that.”

“What do you mean? You said you’d help me.”

“And I will, but you can’t engage my professional services until I know who you are.”

“I’ve told you who I am!” she insisted.

“Sweetheart, I’m a lawyer, and according to the law, your claim don’t weigh without authentication.”

“So what are you saying? That you don’t believe me?”

“I’m not saying that at all. Only that our professional relationship will commence once you get your I.D. In the interim,” His gaze slid over her in a way that threatened to melt her insides, “you’d best find yourself a nice, long, sturdy pole.”

Read Pink® in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Support the Next Chapter in Innovative Research

Penguin Random House Marks Five-Year Partnership Milestone and $125,000 ..
in Donations to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®

What’s black and white and pink all over? The initiative by Penguin Random House called Read Pink® in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October)!

Today the scientific community has left behind the “one-size-fits-all” breast cancer treatment to emerge with targeted, more effective therapies. As a result, after remaining stagnant for more than 50 years, the death rate from breast cancer has decreased by 30 percent. The Read Pink® initiative by Penguin Random House is proud to be part of this exciting new chapter in the fight against breast cancer, supporting the bold research of The Breast Cancer Foundation® (BCRF), while leveraging its passionate readers to help increase awareness and education about the disease. This literary embrace of a life-saving cause has resulted in nearly 1.5 million best-selling novels shipped with Read Pink seals and information about BCRF across all five years of the promotion.

Penguin Random House is thrilled to partner once again this year with BCRF, as 91 cents of every dollar spent by BCRF is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness programs.

The $25,000 donation that Penguin Random House contributes, regardless of sales, provides vital funds to support the mission of BCRF.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Penguin Random House’s Read Pink® editions, we are featuring a few participating authors and what Read Pink® means to them…

Beatriz Williams (2014 Read Pink® Spokesperson), A Hundred Summers
“Every life lost to breast cancer leaves behind a hole that can never be filled again: a wife, a mother, a sister, a friend, an aunt, a grandmother. I’m so grateful for organizations like The Breast Cancer Research Foundation for their efforts to find a cure for this devastating disease, and honored to support breast cancer awareness, detection, and research through Penguin’s READ PINK program in 2014. With your help, we can move closer to the day when breast cancer leaves behind only survivors.”

Karen White, The Time Between
“Since 1989, death rates from breast cancer have been decreasing due to earlier detection and improved treatment because of the efforts of organizations like The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Books have always been an important part of my life, and I am honored that my book will be part of Penguin’s Read Pink program that supports breast cancer awareness and research through reading. It is my greatest hope that through efforts like this we might find a cure within my lifetime.”

Nora Roberts, Sea Swept and The Witness
“To all the moms and daughters, wives and sisters, lovers and friends, Read Pink is here for you and yours. Help support breast cancer awareness and the strong, brave women who fight or will fight this disease and Read Pink in October.”

Catherine Anderson, Perfect Timing
“I am so delighted to be included in the Read Pink campaign again this year with Perfect Timing being featured, along with so many other great books, to raise funds for breast cancer research. I can remember when a diagnosis of breast cancer was often equivalent to a death sentence. Nowadays, the survival rates have increased greatly, and I personally know women who have prevailed over this terrible disease. Sadly, I’ve also known a few women who lost the battle. So I call upon all of you to join ranks with me and countless other women in a war to defeat breast cancer. ‘Read Pink! Buy books bearing the Read Pink logo as gifts for the women you love.’ By standing together as sisters, we have it within our power to make a huge difference!”

Jayne Ann Krentz, Dream Eyes
“This is the time of year when we celebrate the progress that has been made in the battle against breast cancer and acknowledge the work that lies ahead. No, we aren’t there yet. There’s a long way to go. The greatest weapon we have to fight this disease is research and research costs money. That is why this breast cancer awareness campaign is so important and why I am proud to participate.”

Marie Force, I Want to Hold Your Hand
“I’m so thrilled to be part of the Read Pink effort to help raise awareness and funding for breast cancer research. I hear frequently from romance readers who tell me my books and those of other romance authors have helped them get through breast cancer treatment. I want to hear from fewer of them in the future. I want to hear they took our books on fabulous vacations rather than treatments. Please Read Pink in October to support all the courageous women fighting this disease and to fund critical research. Thank you for Reading Pink!”

Dreaming with Fire

The Night Belongs to Fireman

I Heart Social Media
I rarely read magazines anymore, with the exception of one kind: the inflight magazines stuck in the back pocket of the airplane seat in front of me. You know those? Do you read them? For some reason (enforced captivity, maybe?) I devour them cover to cover. So when I got a call from someone writing an article for the Alaska Airlines magazine, I felt as if I’d won an Oscar or something. (Me? In a magazine snuggled up against an airsickness bag? I can die now.) Anyway, he wanted to talk to me about social media. How I use it; what I do online; how I handle the demand on my time. Is it difficult, as an author today, being required to do social media on top of the actual writing of books?

I knew what he was getting at. I’ve heard authors talk about the “good old days” when all they had to do was write their books, and the publisher did the rest. But I have a completely different take. For me, living in Alaska, so far from the rest of the world, the existence of social media is an incredible boon. Honestly, I’m grateful I became an author in a post-social media world. Writing is a lonely profession. I love being able to put my writing on pause and hop onto Twitter to see what everyone’s talking about. Or check in with my Facebook author page and see what crazy captions people came up with for a photo I posted. This is FUN for me.

Sure, it takes time. Everything worthwhile does. Sure, there are times when I surface from Facebook and wonder where the last two hours went. But how else would I be able to connect so easily with readers, or other authors? It’s expensive and time-consuming to leave Alaska for conferences or book signings. Of course I do that too, but not as much as other authors – I just can’t. But I can log onto Facebook and chat about the latest sexy fireman photo someone posted on my wall. I can cruise my friends’ timelines and find out who’s reading what, who is dealing with family issues, who’s excited about the baseball playoffs. With social media, this incredibly fun, vibrant community exists right at my fingertips. My life would be much sadder and lonelier without it.

For me, social media is more about connection and conversation than about promotion. But since I have a book out right now, I should mention that The Night Belongs to Fireman is now available at most major retailers of books and ebooks, Reviewers are using words like “delightful,” “steamy,” “witty,” and “irresistible.” You can read the first chapter here.

Are you on social media? What’s your favorite place to hang out online? Do you find it too distracting, or worth the distraction?

The Night Belongs to FiremanDaring . . . Sexy . . . Irresistible . . .
They’re the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel

When fireman Fred Breen rescues a bachelorette party after a construction crane collapses onto their limo, the media labels him the “Bachelor Hero.” But all Fred can think about is the petite brunette with the sexy mane of dark curls who bolted away from him faster than a wildfire after he carried her to safety. And when he discovers she’s none other than Rachel Kessler, the daughter of a tech billionaire, the girl whose kidnapping riveted the nation, he intends to learn every intimate detail about this intriguing woman who sets his pulse on fire.

Rachel can’t deny the lean-muscled firefighter is smokin’ hot. But after having one too many drinks at the bar where she first meets him, Rachel knows she’s made a fool of herself. Yet when he rescues her from the limo, she feels safe for the first time since she was held for ransom as a child. Then her overprotective father insists Fred be her bodyguard—and his close presence kindles a burning desire that only he can extinguish.

THE NIGHT BELONGS TO FIREMAN has been getting great reviews.

“Sexy fireman hero saves the heiress who has everything and nothing—what’s not to like? Smart, fun and engaging. … Bernard ends her Bachelor Firemen series with a fast-paced, witty read.”
Kirkus Reviews

“Bernard’s Bachelor Firemen series always provides a steamy, irresistible reading experience, and this sixth entry is full of such lighthearted humor that fans and newcomers alike will be thoroughly delighted.” 4 1/2 stars

Heartbroken and disillusioned, Rebecca Howland is done with all men. Especially noblemen. Past a certain age, she knows her previous life of carnal indulgence and grand adventure is over. Or so she thinks. Back at home, whilst working in her family’s shop, a moment of compassion entangles her in an old battle between two powerful, bitter enemies. Years ago, Rebecca forbade herself to love Stephen Drake. Now he’s back, no longer the young man she remembers but a dark and dangerous stranger. His stare pinned her and she remained rooted to the spot like a cornered hare.
He lowered his head. She felt her eyes widening. Her heart beat harder and harder, deafening thunder in her ears.
He put his mouth to hers.
She couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t make a move.
Oh, God. Oh, God save me…
His full lips pressed hers, warm, soft, intense. She’d never known a man’s mouth to be so lushly sensual and yet so deliciously firm. From that touch, pleasure surged through her, tightening her nipples, and sending sparks of fire tingling into her belly and outward, all the way down to her toes. She couldn’t suppress the shudder that wracked her head to foot.
He lifted his head. Then he watched her, closely.
Edginess built inside her, combining with and intensifying the arousal pulsing in her blood. She licked her lips then let her breath out in a ragged sigh.
“Open to me, Rebecca.”
He’d spoken softly, oh so softly—but the steel beneath the gentleness sent shivers all over her. And not a little tingling excitement. Unable to bear the determined heat of his gaze, she stared at the bridge of his elegant straight nose. Dazed, afraid of him, yes, holy heavens yes, but far more frightened of the feelings that were rapidly leaping to life within her.
No, this couldn’t be happening. She had kept herself safe all these years since Jon. No emotionally dangerous entanglements. She was past all of this. He should be out chasing some young opera dancer tonight. She should be home, fast asleep in her chaste bed.

FB Party
In addition to the tour there’s a FB party as well on Oct 3rd and 4th. If you could include a note about the event in your post that would be wonderful. And of course if you’d like to join in on the festivities please just pop over to Facebook and join the event.
