MBA: What makes you most happy while writing?

Katie Lane: The characters.  I love quirky heroines, imperfect heroes, zany neighbors, and crazy townsfolk.  It’s such fun to mix them all together and see what happens.  If people could listen in when I’m writing, they would think I was crazy.  I laugh out loud at things my characters say.  And talk to them like they are sitting right next to me.  “Oh, noooo!  You are not going to do that.  That’s just crazy.  Okay, you’re going to do that.  Fine, do it!  But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

MBA: What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten or given about writing?

Katie Lane: When I was first writing, I read this book (Sorry, but the title escapes me at the moment.) that pretty much told you what to do if you DID NOT want to get published.  The first thing on the list was “Don’t Finish your Book.”  It just made so much sense to me.  If you don’t finish a book, there’s no way it can be published.  So I finish books.  They might not ever get published, but they have a chance.

MBA: While writing this book did you have a moment of OMG that’s perfect?

Katie Lane: I’m really hard on myself so I rarely say the word “perfect.”  But there were a few times while writing this that I smiled with satisfaction.  The scene where Nash and Eden are standing in the street and find out all these truths about each other and then they almost have sex and are caught by her . . . well, shoot, I can’t finish without spoiling the scene.  Anyway, that scene turned out sexy, funny, and heartwarming—my favorite combination for a scene.

MBA: Were you surprised by anything in this book?

Katie Lane: I’m always surprised by a book.  I can write a detailed outline, but I never follow it.  The characters go where the characters want to go.  And Nash and Eden were these two loose canons who got very stubborn and nasty when I tried to force them into certain situations that they didn’t like.  So this book was hard to write in that respect, but fun to write as far as surprises go.

MBA: What 5 things would you take with you if you had to live on Mars for a year?

Katie Lane: Matt Damon because he pretty much knows how to survive there and because . . . well, he’s hot.  A laptop with a solar panel battery or whatever type of battery works on Mars.  My softie pillow because I never go any place without it.  Lots and Lots of Skinny Pop Popcorn.  And my dog Roo.  Okay, if I’m taking Roo, I need to skip the Skinny Pop and take my husband, but we’ll still need Matt because my husband thinks he knows how to live off the land, but he really doesn’t.

MBA: What do you hope readers will gain from reading your story?

Katie Lane: I hope my readers gain the same things I want to gain when I read a romance novel:  Hours of entertainment and a sigh of contentment when the hero and heroine live happily-ever-after.

Thank you so much for hosting me today, Book Addictions & More!  It’s always a pleasure. :o)

HAPPY RELEASE DAY, JULIE JOHNSTONE!!

Medieval Romance

{SCOTTISH MEDIEVAL HISTORICAL ROMANCE}

When A Laird Loves A Lady

Medieval

A need to belong drives her. A longing to forget compels him. Fate may send them into each other’s arms, but only love can mend their hearts.

An Outlander

Raised by a tyrannical father, Marion de Lacy yearns for the comfort of belonging to a loving family. So when her father announces her betrothal to an evil baron in exchange for a number of knights, she concocts a desperate scheme to avoid the marriage: feigning her own death and then fleeing England. But when her plan goes terribly awry and she’s captured by the baron, not even her careful preparations could ready her for the Scottish barbarian who rescues her and then informs her that he’s to marry her by edict of her king. Certain her father will defy the king’s orders and wed her to the baron if she refuses the Highlander’s hand, Marion agrees to marry the strangely compelling but obstinate laird of the MacLeod clan.

A Highlander

After the death of his beloved wife, Iain MacLeod has no desire to marry ever again. Yet when he finds himself obliged to do so to secure the freedom of his childhood friend and king, he reluctantly travels across England to collect his unwanted bride, expecting to find a cold Englishwoman. Instead, he discovers a fiery, bold beauty who is fiercely loyal, protective of those she loves, and defies him at every turn, challenging his certainty that his heart is dead.

Ensnared

Following a hasty marriage and perilous journey to Scotland, Marion harbors no illusions that her new husband loves her. Still, her heart cannot resist the noble, brave warrior, and she cannot suppress the hope that she has finally found where she belongs. However, the harder she tries to fit in with the clan and gain Iain’s love, the farther away her dreams drift. Iain is more than willing to give his respect to his courageous wife—her kisses and caresses even ignite his blood and demand his passion—but he refuses to give up his heart. That is, until enemies near and far threaten to take Marion from him. Now the demons that haunt him can only be conquered by surrendering body and soul to Marion, if only it’s not too late…

MY THOUGHTS!

When a Laird Love a Lady

When A Laird Loves A Lady is #1 in the exciting new “Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts” series. WOW! What a fast paced, set on the edge of your seat, passion filled, adventuous, dangerous and romantic story. With betrayal, treason, treachery and amidst it all hopefully, love. What more could a Medevial Romance fan wish? Can love find it’s way into the heart of a unyielding Highlander, Lain MacLeod, who has lost so much, including his frail but beloved wife? Then, he’s commanded to marry an English Lass, in order to start negotiations to free the Scottish King, David from the English. What he finds is no pampered, scared, English Lady, but a feisty, determined and independent Lady, who is in grave danger. English Lady, Marion de Lacy, raised by very tyrannical father, looking for love, acceptance, family and home find it among the MacLeod clan? If only they can survive the hardships they and the MacLeod clan face.
From the first page to the last, readers will be captivated, ensnared and held in awe of the well developed characters and the magnificent storyline. Ms. Johnstone can definitely woo her readers!
I can not recommend this story enough. A most delicious, emotional, heartwarming and an absolute must read. Fans of Scottish Highland Romance with danger and action will definitely want this one on their TBR list. A sensual but compassionate read. I loved the interaction between Lain and Marion, as well as the other characters. What an honor to watch their relationship and special bond grow. Readers will find a few surprises, and many twists and turns along the way. I was guessing who the traitor was right up to the very end. WOW! Awesome storytelling! A definite keeper! Please pick up “When a Laird Loves a Lady”, you won’t be able to put it down. Ms. Johnstone has brought the Highlands to life through the pages of her story. I absolutely loved this story! More, please and hopefully, soon, very soon. Very talented author, who knows how to bring her readers to tears. I questioned rather Lain and Marion would find their HEA or will evil prevail, right up to the very end. Can light replace darkness and fill hearts with an undeniably love? You MUST read to learn more. A powerful, emotional, and compelling story of Scottish hardships, turmoil, and how quickly they can be betrayed and how precious life is in the Highlands.
One of my Favorite Medieval Romance authors and I can’t wait to read more of this series.

BLURB:

The flames of desire fuel a torrid reunion as bestselling author Bronwen Evans returns with another captivating novel of the Disgraced Lords. See why Jen McLaughlin raves, “Bronwen’s historical romances always make the top of my reading list!”

Lady Evangeline Stuart chose to wed a tyrant with a title, or so society believes. That was five years ago—five long years she could have spent with her first and only love: Lord Hadley Fullerton, the second son of the Duke of Claymore. Now Evangeline is a widow, and her soul cries out for Hadley. But when they see each other at last, everything has changed. The passion in his eyes has been corrupted by betrayal. Somehow Evangeline must regain Hadley’s trust—without revealing the secret that would spoil the seduction.

Hadley is determined not to be distracted by Evangeline. He and the other Libertine Scholars are in pursuit of an enemy who has been striking at them from the shadows, and Evangeline’s mere presence could be dangerous. But with one smile, one touch, one taste of Evangeline’s lips, Hadley’s resolve is overpowered by much more pleasant memories. As the two enter into a discreet affair, Hadley vows to give her his body, never his heart. That she will have to earn.

Getting Wound Up by Jennifer Bernard and Erin Nicholas….a #review and #giveaway

Getting Wound Up: A Sapphire Falls/ Love Between the Bases novel-- PART ONEGetting Wound Up: A Sapphire Falls/ Love Between the Bases novel– PART ONE by Jennifer Bernard & Erin Nicholas

Kindle Edition, 59 pages
Published March 8th 2016 by EN Fiction, Inc.
ASIN:B019Y0U61E
Crossover Novel: Part of the Love Between the Bases series from Jennifer Bernard & Sapphire Falls series from Erin Nicholas (can be read without reading the other series)

A fun, flirty crossover novel from bestselling authors Jennifer Bernard (the Love Between the Bases series) and Erin Nicholas (the Sapphire Falls series)

Caitlyn Murray has never let on that she’s had fantasies about her brother’s friend Eli Anderson for years. She’d do anything for the sexy, baseball star who’s given it all up to stay in Sapphire Falls and take care of his family, but she and Eli are friends. Just friends.

So when her brother hatches a plan to get Eli to the pro baseball try-out for the Kilby Catfish that he has dreamed of and deserves, Caitlyn is all in. After all, what’s a little kidnapping among friends?

A spot on the pitcher’s mound for the Catfish isn’t the only tempting thing about the spontaneous road trip. Eli already knows that Caitlyn is as sweet as the candies she makes for the Sapphire Falls bakery, but alone with her overnight in the tiny motel room in Kansas, it’s impossible to resist the urge to take a little taste.

But when that taste leads to falling for the girl next door just as his front door is moving hundreds of miles away, can Eli really have it all? Or do they have too many strikes against them?

My Thoughts

WOW! I have to say I love the idea of “brother’s best friend and little sister” stories. They are awesome when written well. This one is awesome. The writing is excellent. The plot is engaging. I will say that I want more! I can’t wait for parts 2 and 3. So yes a serial it does leave you waiting for more, but I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger, more like watching a TV series and it having “to be continued” and you have to wait a week to know more. Fans of Jennifer Bernard and Erin Nicholas are going to love this one. It’s such a great crossover novel. And those who haven’t read Erin Nicholas Sapphire Falls won’t be lost, but will be eager to read more of that series. The same with those who haven’t read Jennifer Bernard’s Love Between the Bases. You’ll be eager to learn more about Caleb Hart and Mike Solo and OMG Trevor Stark……..(okay so I have a minor crush on Trevor at this time…..his book will arrive soon)…..Either way you will adore both the characters and the feelings this part one evokes. If you are new to both Erin Nicholas and Jennifer Bernard I feel GETTING WOUND UP, part one, is a great place to start. You to see a bit of both authors. I highly recommend this one and can’t wait for pt 2. If you’re read any of my previous reviews you know I’m not a fan of serials, but this one didn’t leave me feeling like I didn’t get a full story. It more or less just left me eager to read more of the story between these two. I want to know what happens next!

My Rating: 5

Scandalously yours…

Through the ages, where there has been society there have always been norms and, conversely, scandals when love gets in the way of propriety.
From the ancient Celts to medieval Cornwall, from Regency and Victorian England to the American west after the War Between the States, eight stories by multi-published, bestselling authors explore the triumphs of love between a man and a woman—even scandalous love—over what’s considered “proper” in their time.

Wilder’s Thief, by USA Today bestseller, Josie Jax
Robbing a bank wasn’t what reformed pickpocket Rachel Conroy had in mind. Yet when the lyin’ banker entangles her in one helluva financial fix, she finds herself in the bank of Diamond Bluff, Missouri, disguised as a lad and holding a gun on an unfamiliar teller. But the handsome man is so distracting she can’t keep her sex-addled brain on the task at hand—until he threatens to turn her over to the authorities to be hanged if she doesn’t return the money.
When village newcomer and winery owner Dierck Wilder mans his uncle’s small-town bank for a few fateful moments, he’s suddenly staring down the barrel of a revolver. His life veers off on a tumultuous path after he pursues the robber and uncovers a sexy diamond in the rough. Now to unearth the truth and tame Wilder’s bandit…

Aphrodite’s Necklace, by Anh Leod
Exiled by her husband to staid, Victorian England, the goddess Aphrodite is determined to spice up life for a mortal couple by giving them a magic necklace that opens their minds and hearts to passion. Can she teach innocents to delight in sensual love?
Emily Rogers is in the marriage mart, but once the necklace is in her hands, she enlists William Coxe, her family butler, to help find its owner. As Aphrodite intended when she dropped the priceless piece at a ball held in Emily’s home, desire overwhelms Emily—and also William, whom Emily’s parents would never countenance her marrying.
Good sense prevails when the two return the necklace to the goddess, but by this time love has caught the lovers in what seems an impossible situation. Can improper love survive the loss of Aphrodite’s necklace? Only with the goddess’s help can they find a way toward lasting happiness.

Madamoiselle Makes a Match, by Kate Rothwell
An original novella, never before published!
Victorian virgins meet at an inn.
In a village where work is hard to find, virtuous Sally must at last “entertain men” or lose her job at the local inn. The young man she agrees to entertain is Jasper, a visiting gentleman who’s appalled that he’d accidentally forced Sally into this predicament. Yet despite their peculiar meeting and the enormous differences in class and education, the maid and gentleman discover passion and something even more precious, intimacy. Their lovely interlude is interrupted, reality intrudes, and Sally faces another choice…

Seducing Laura, a Regency novel by bestselling British author, Lynne Connolly

But the appearance of charismatic Ross Stansfield, the fortune hunter’s handsome uncle, throws her off balance. Instantaneous and combustible, their attraction makes her question her decision never to love again. When the young couple elopes, Laura sets out in pursuit, and fearing for her safety, Ross loses no time chasing her. Thrown closely together, their attraction becomes impossible to resist.

—————-

Long ago and far away…

tin miningAs a fledgling author, I binged on Virginia Henley and Anita Mills–Johanna Lindsey and Jude Deveraux, too—especially their tales of medieval castles, intrigue, love…and treachery. I’m talking years ago, during the nineties when these authors’ names were household words. Hence, when asked to write an historical, erotic story, I focused in on the mysteries of Cornwall, full of peskies and giants and fertility rituals…not to mention a cursed earldom and its wicked, vampire countess. (No, I don’t know where the idea for that came from, but it seemed to me an original element—and appropriate for the hero’s mother who was the embodiment of evil.)dark side of the moon
Thus, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was born in the waning months of 2003—in the personae of an innocent maiden (Lea) forced into the protection of Alain, a young, decent earl tainted by the stain of his father and half-brother’s suspicious demise—and the fact his mother is the evil countess Ciara, so wicked that Alain is forced to lock her away in his castle’s most secure tower, perched on a cliff above the sea.
The Celtic rituals I’d read about seemed perfect to spice up what was basically a love story growing from a promise of protection made between Lea and Alain’s fathers years ago. Because of the coming holiday season, I found it convenient to invent these kinky rituals as part of fertility rites attendant upon the Winter Solstice. Thus, in December 2003, this story came to life.
Twelve years later, I rewrote the story, lightening up on the kink and beefing up the emotional journey Alain took with Lea toward their happily-ever-after. The result: BENEATH A CORNISH MOON, a medieval fantasy for lovers of historical romance everywhere. I hope readers will enjoy this resurrected, sanitized novella, available now in a boxed set, SCANDALOUSLY YOURS, along with seven awesome steps back into a past that’s often scandalous for its time, yet the scandals are ultimately in pursuit of a forever sort of love!

EXCERPT beneath a cornish moon

Excerpt:
Muffled beats of a horse’s hooves echoed off the huge stones, ever louder. The ground wind intensified. Lea fancied she could see the stones shift ever so slightly in their places around the ancient circle as though, like her, they feared an unknown intruder. “Should we seek safety?”
Alain tightened his grip on Lea’s waist. “Nay. No danger lurks here. We have been upon St. Vincent lands since we passed the monastery some distance back.”
The rider drew near, his mount’s hooves pounding ever louder against the rocky ground. Then Lea saw him. He was but a man with a sullen visage, smaller yet darker than Alain. The nondescript brown beast he rode was bigger than her palfrey, yet not nearly as substantial as a knight’s warhorse. His raiment branded him less than noble, more than a villein.
Alain strode to the man and bade him welcome ere he alighted from his horse. ‘Twas then Lea noticed a small device sewn upon his homespun tunic. It was like Alain’s, yet different. A lion rampant, dull gold rather than bright, was slashed diagonally to show the black background and create the illusion of a bar sinister.
He obviously noticed her staring. “You wonder, do you not, why I display my device upon a field of black while Alain wears his on a dark blue tabard?” The man settled his gaze not upon Lea but on Alain’s velvet surcoat. “Blue dye and cloth of velvet is far too rich for a bastard’s purse.”
Alain? Not “my lord earl” or some other address befitting one of Alain’s station in life? Who was this intruder who wore a mockery of the St. Vincent device? Hostility crackled in the air and swirled about them in the fierce, cold wind. Lea drew Alain’s cloak closer around her and remained silent.
A pained expression on his face, Alain looked first at their visitor, then at her. “Lea, I would have you meet Daffyd of Bodmin Moor. My sire’s by-blow, or so we’ve both been told. Daffyd, may I present Lady Eleanore of Whitehurst, who is to become my bride.”
How Lea managed the civilities she knew not, but she soon found herself riding between Alain and Daffyd, while Gemma and the knights who made up Alain’s escort followed some distance back.
“Danger lurks in these lands, my lady. It was in some ancient ruins beyond that rise that the Lady Jeanne perished not long ago. Sad it was, for her to die on the eve of her marriage.” Daffyd gestured toward their left, but Lea saw naught but rugged land and craggy hills far in the distance. Her imagination churning, she murmured a meaningless platitude.
He turned to Alain. “So I see you have quickly replaced one intended bride with another.” Daffyd’s laugh mingled in the wind, creating an eerie sound that chilled Lea more than the coldest of winter winds.
Alain shrugged, as though unaffected by Daffyd’s words, but the tight set of his jaw provided Lea a strong hint that his half-brother’s words disturbed him. ‘Twas Daffyd’s own audacity and Alain’s seeming indifference that plagued Lea, especially when Daffyd addressed her directly.
“Some say my noble brother won his earldom by treachery, that our elder brother’s fall was no accident at all. Others whisper that Alain’s was the hand that loosened the stone and crushed the lady Jeanne on the eve of their wedding. Practically every man on St. Vincent lands believe he did in one or the other, but ‘tis my belief he slew them both.
“Think, demoiselle, If Brian had lived, Alain would not have had to take his place as the fair Jeanne’s betrothed, ‘tis true, but then Alain would not now be earl if Brian still lived.” Dafydd’s cackle rang out over sounds of wind and sea.
Lea gasped. The picture Daffyd painted was much like what Richard had told her, yet very different from the impression she herself had formed of Alain during their journey. Surely he would speak up, refute his brother’s allegations. When Alain nudged his destrier close to her palfrey and took the reins from her, she held her breath.
“Daffyd, if you wish to keep your tongue, still it now,” he spat out. “And be gone with you.”
Then he met Lea’s gaze. “Listen not to idle prattle. ‘Tis but my bastard brother spouting venom. He’s naught but bitter that St. Vincent can never come to him. Look,” he said, clearly intent upon distracting her. “There in the distance you can see the towers of Castle St. Vincent. Your new home.”
Daffyd spurred his horse, then shouted as he rode away. “Castle St. Vincent is but a house of death, fair Lea. Let not my young brother’s comely face and manly form entice you to let down your guard. Listen. And heed what you hear and see.” The murderous look on his face before he disappeared into the mist chilled Lea’s soul.
“Did Daffyd not share my flesh and blood, I’d have him hanged. Pay his rambling no mind. Come, I’d hasten now. The comforts of home await us.”

About Ann Jacobs:
First published by Berkley in 1997, Ann Jacobs is the author of over a hundred novels and novellas, all romances. Some are mainstream sensual romances, while others explore erotic themes. All of the books, as they revert to her, have been completely rewritten or very heavily revised to reflect her own view of what constitutes good taste in romance, however erotic they may be.
In other words, the excessively crude language embraced by a former publisher has been deleted, as has repetitious and salacious description of human body parts. She has endeavored to make these books’ content so that nothing in them will offend the average lover of sensual, mainstream romance. Some titles, because of their content (BDSM and ménage themes, for instance) retain their classification as erotic romance at Ann’s website. Others, whose story lines are strictly about the love stories of one man and one woman, are classified there as “romance.”
Ann hopes you will enjoy these reverted stories, as well as her new, never-before-published books and novellas that will be coming along beginning early 2016.

Excerpts

The wall in the elevator held him upright. So

much to do—quitting his job being at the top of the list. The door opened on his floor. Oh well, he had

his time and passion. That he’d give to the kids at the youth centers—not that anybody could pay the

rent with it.

He dragged himself down the hall toward

his suite, staring at the phone that never rang. With his right hand, he grabbed the key card, looked up,

and stopped so fast he might have had rubber shoes on a shag carpet. Ally stood in front of his suite,

leaning against the wall.

He tried not to gasp too loudly. Ally minus

the ugly glasses and in street clothes was a sight to see. Long, slim legs in trim jeans and a pink checked

shirt that set off her pale complexion and bright red hair. Adorable. Her hips were so narrow and chest

so flat, she could have been a boy but for the high ponytail. A very cute boy. Obviously Taylor’s cock

suffered from gender confusion, because it wiggled, and Taylor did not do girls. “Hi. You

came.”

She nodded but didn’t smile. “You wanted

to see me. You’re a VIP guest, and I’m a maid. Not wise to refuse.”

That wasn’t the best way to start. “I didn’t

mean for it to be a command performance.”

“Oh?” Lasers behind those brown

eyes.

Hell, this was his one chance. No time to

argue. “Could you come in for a minute?” He keyed open the door and held

it.

Another nod. She crossed in front of him

and stopped in the middle of the entry. He closed the door and pointed toward the living room. “Please,

come on in and sit.”

She paused, then walked into the living

room and perched on the edge of one of the couches. He sat across from her. Jesus, this was hard. “Uh,

you remember that I got a shock while you were here. Bad news, right?”

“Yes. You seemed upset as I was leaving. I

hope things have improved.”

“Not yet, but they could.” He took a deep

breath. “Are you married or attached?”

She stood straight up with her mouth open.

He bounded up opposite her. “Wait. I said that badly. It’s just that I want to make you a proposal that

requires that you not be married and—”

She started walking toward the

door.

“No, wait,

please.”

She kept walking.

“Ally, will you marry

me?”

Okay, that stopped her. She looked over her

shoulder, and her eyes could have been stop signs, they were so huge. “What did you

say?”

The words tumbled out. “I’ll give you a

million dollars to marry me.” Well, damn, Mr. Smooth

strikes again. “Please, sit down and let me explain. I know I sound nuts, but I’m

harmless.”

She stared at him and suddenly started to

laugh. She stumbled back and collapsed on the couch. “Okay, I confess, there’s not the slightest chance I

could walk away and not hear the rest of this story.” She held up a hand. “But keep your distance in case

you’re as crazy as you sound.”

“Can I get you something to

drink?”

She glanced at a serviceable-looking watch

on her arm. “Sure, I’m off the clock. I’ll have a beer.”

Taylor used the trip to the service kitchen to

take a breath. He hadn’t quite thought this through. She was right. He must sound crazy. Damn, he

wasn’t too bad with men. Being with a female was throwing him off. Or maybe it was being the one who

needed something. In business he was powerful enough and wealthy enough to always be on an even

footing. Now he was a beggar. The cute maid held all the cards. Time to put on his poker

face.

He grabbed beer bottles from the fridge,

opened them, and poured into two glasses. For a guy he would have skipped that step. Carrying the

beer, he walked back into the living room. She was sitting forward, elbows leaning on her knees, staring

sideways at the view of the thousands of lights. Her profile, with its high-bridged nose and strong

cheekbones, was etched against the softly lit room. Pretty.

“Here you go.” He extended the glass, and

she took it.

“Thanks.” She took a long drink. Cleaning

rooms must be thirsty work.

He sat opposite her and took his own sip.

“Okay, here’s the deal. I live in San Francisco. My family has money, and I work in the family business.

My grandfather, who started the business, died a number of years ago, and my father now runs it with a

lot of help from me.”

“Don’t you have a board of

directors?”

Taylor glanced up. That wasn’t the question

he’d expected. “Uh, yeah. We do, but it’s a privately held firm, so all the directors are kind of

figureheads who report to my father.”

“I see.”

Did she? “Anyway, I just found out—” He

glanced at his watch. “—a few hours ago, that the inheritance my grandfather left me came with

unusual strings attached. My father hid this from me.”

“Why? He wanted the money for

himself?”

“Exactly. What he didn’t tell me was that I

have to be married by my twenty-fifth birthday in order to collect the

inheritance.”

She raised an eyebrow. They were a lot

darker than her bright hair. “Daddy has been a very bad boy.”

Were all maids this savvy? “Yes. The

problem is my birthday is tomorrow. In other words, it starts at midnight

tonight.”

“Wow.” She frowned. “Do you have to be

married by your birthday or on your birthday?” She took another mouthful of

beer.

“The will said by my birthday, and I can’t talk to the lawyer who drew it up to determine the

meaning, because he’s on my father’s side.”

“Holy crap.”

Taylor grinned.

“Yeah.”

“How come you let that happen? I thought

you were so good in business.”

He almost laughed. Who was she? Bill

Gates? Instead he sighed. “When my grandfather died, I was an eighteen-year-old kid busy trying to

figure out his sexuality. I loved him, and his death broke my heart. I didn’t have any energy to protect

myself from my father.”

“I’m really sorry.” She sipped. “So, easy. You

call a woman you know, ask her to marry you, and tell her she gets a cut.”

“That’s why I’m

here.”

She looked around. “So where is

she?”

“Remember when I got the upsetting phone

call?”

“Yes.”

“That was me finding out that the woman I

was planning to ask had been in an accident and isn’t coming.”

“Oh dear.”

“Yes.”

“So call another

girl.”

“I did. You.”

Taylor held Ally’s arm

tightly as they walked, the play of muscle under the jacket very noticeable—and appealing. Must be all

that bathtub scrubbing.

The minister pointed to some documents on

the table. “Please sign these.”

Ally clutched his wrist. He smiled. Sound calm. “Come on, easy does it.” He barely looked at the

license as he signed, he was so busy focusing calming energy on Ally. “Okay, your

turn.”

She swallowed hard, looked at him like

she’d just run over the deer in the headlights, grabbed the pen, and signed Ally May in a scrawl.

The minister clapped his hands. “Lovely,

lovely. Come now.”

He grabbed her hand, ignored the electricity

that sparked up his arm at the feel of her warm skin, and pulled her to the head of the

aisle.

A woman sat at an organ and started

playing the wedding march.

Ally shook her red hair again. “No, I don’t

want to march.”

“Okay, we’ll walk up together, how does

that sound?”

“Okay.”

Taking her hand, he started to walk, and she

took off like there was a prize for how fast you could get to the altar. The lady on the organ sped up the

wedding march to a wedding run, and it almost made Taylor laugh—almost.

He kept hold of Ally’s hand. Her flowers

shook like Disney had animated them. She set them on the front seat of the first row of

chairs.

The minister walked around them since he’d

gotten there last, looked at his watch, and picked up the Bible. Must have another couple coming in soon. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here

to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony.”

“Taylor?”

The minister stopped. “Is everything all

right?”

She shook her head. “There’s something I

need to tell you.”

Taylor nodded. Uh-oh. “Okay.”

With a bang that made them all jump an

inch, the door to the chapel burst open. A big bald man stood there, frowning, staring around the

room.

The minister cleared his throat. “If you don’t

mind, there’s a wedding in progress.”

The man’s frown got deeper. “Yeah, okay.

Sorry.”

“Did you wish to take a seat and attend the

ceremony?”

“Uh, no. I’ll stand.” He sounded like he’d

escaped from Guys and

Dolls.

The minister looked at Ally. “Miss, I believe

you were saying something?”

She’d turned white as her shirt. Her big eyes

strayed toward the door and then back to Taylor’s face. “No, nothing. Just get on with

it.”

Taylor whispered, “Shall I ask him to leave?

Is he bothering you?”

“No, no. Don’t do that,

please.”

God, he felt like he was torturing her. “Do

you want to change your mind?”

The door to the chapel closed. The intruder

was gone.

She glanced at the entrance, sighed, and

stared at her shoes.

“Ally?”

For a full thirty seconds she said nothing,

then finally shook her head. “No. Continue.”

The minister smiled. “Ah, good.” He started

talking about the sacred union of marriage.

Okay, that made Taylor feel fully weird. But

hell, people got married because they drank too much and wanted memories from Vegas. His union

wasn’t the strangest—was it?

“Do you, Taylor Fitzgerald, take this woman

to be your lawfully wedded wife?”

“What? Oh yes, I

do.”

“And do you, Ally May, take this man to be

your lawfully wedded husband?”

He squeezed her hand. He kind of expected

another long wait, but she piped up, “Yes.”

“Do you have a

ring?”

Taylor produced the beautiful diamond and

sapphire circle. He had to reach down for her hand, and it shook so hard he could barely get the ring on,

but it fit perfectly.

He handed her his ring, and she managed to

get it on his left ring finger, but it was a near thing—twice she almost dropped

it.

The minister clapped his hands. Probably

out of relief. “You may kiss the bride.”

Well, hell, he’d forgotten that part. She

looked up at him, and those brown eyes glittered. Oh, she

wears contacts. Wonder why she needs glasses? Her breath smelled like the mint ice cream

she’d eaten for dessert, and it made him shiver. He leaned forward and pressed his lips gently against

hers. Her mouth was freezing like her hands—but sweet. So sweet.

He pulled back, and she instantly stared at

the floor. God, his cock even danced a bit at that kiss. Maybe when he went to bed he’d have time to

think about why he responded like this to a woman. He never had before.

By the time Taylor pulled into the

parking garage at his condominium, his skin felt too tight in a lot of places, most of them below the belt.

Ally had spent the whole drive alternately stretching out his long legs in their heels and pulling them up

under him, showing off yards of bare, smooth, hard man flesh from ankle to hip. Taylor had never

known he liked men in drag, but Jesus, his tastes seemed to form around everything Alessandro. The

guy simply turned him on. He’d done it as a woman, and now, as a man in woman’s clothing, he made

Taylor want to commit lewd acts in public places—like the side of the freeway. And he seemed oblivious

to his effect on Taylor, which only added to the allure.

Watching those same long legs striding

down the hall in front of him made Taylor seriously glad he had a coat to cover the telephone pole in his

pants. Ally waited at the door for Taylor to open it. He needed to get him a

key.

As Ally walked in, he glanced back.

“How soon do they want to do the questioning?”

Taylor closed the door. Could he take

off his coat, or would the fire stick still show? “Smith just said ‘soon.’ If I know Laughton, he wants to

give us as little time to prepare as possible.”

“So we better start practicing.” Ally

unwrapped the belt and slipped Taylor’s coat off his shoulders. As Taylor hung it in the hall closet, Ally

walked into the open living room, ass swaying in the clingy knit.

Blast off. Taylor’s cock leaped, and his brain fried. “Ally?”

“Yes?” He looked over his shoulder in a

move so unconsciously flirtatious, he should have been spanked, and that sounded like way too good an

idea.

“Are you

gay?”

That deep, sultry laugh rumbled

through his padded chest. “Are you kidding?”

“So your father wants you to

marry—”

“A woman. Wealthy and influential. The

type who can do good for the family and persuade his son out of his perversion at the same

time.”

“No wonder you

ran.”

“Yes. Can you imagine living such a life?

Not only married to a member of the wrong sex, but one you don’t even know or like?” He

shuddered.

“You didn’t know

me.”

His lips curved. “True. But I was

desperate—”

Taylor’s stomach

sank.

“And I liked you immediately.

Instinctively.” He kicked off his shoes, sighed, and picked them up. “Besides, I thought you were hot.”

With a twitch of that infernal butt, he walked down the hall.

Taylor gasped for breath. Hot? He thinks I’m hot? Ripping at his tie and

unbuttoning his shirt at the same time, he ran to his room, threw his clothes on the bed, and pulled on

the sweats and T-shirt he liked to sleep in. Hot. He thinks

I’m hot.

Okay, get some control.

In through the nose. Out through the

mouth. In through the—bullshit!

The sun seeped around the Roman shades on the windows,

casting stripes of brightness across the bed.

“Uh, Taylor, it’s about Ally that I called

you.”

“Yeah, okay.” He crept forward and peered around the

wall toward the bed. Sure enough, Stonewall curled in a ball on one pillow while Ally’s hair flowed across

the other, creating a red to orange mosaic. He smiled—then stopped.

“There’s something you should

know.”

“Yeah?” His eyes fixated, and he walked two more

steps toward the bed. Ally lay on her back, one arm above her head, with the white silk pajamas clinging

to her body. Where he was used to seeing small, perky breasts, the silk lay completely flat. So maybe

she enhanced a bit. But that wasn’t what held him rapt. It was the part that wasn’t flat. At her crotch,

the fabric stood straight up in the air like a tent—a tent with a substantial tent

pole.

“Taylor, I don’t know how to say this, so I’m just going

to spit it out. Coco says Ally is a man.”
