She cannot resist the man behind the mask . . .

As the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, Lady Magdalen Keith is not one to partake in lavish balls or other frivolities. Yet at her father’s urging, she agrees to dance with the battle-weary officers at this year’s holiday masquerade. It’s practically her civic duty! But when one such officer—whose dashing good looks cannot be disguised by a mere mask—sweeps her off her feet and into his arms, the innocent lass can’t help herself. Her lips are his for the taking.

But will he betray his country for a kiss?

Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray has spent too many months at sea to be immune to the charms of this lovely beauty. Even after he returns to his ship, she lives in his dreams. But when he discovers Maddie’s true identity—and learns that her father is accused of treason—will the brawny Scot risk his life to follow his heart?

My thoughts:

The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki is a fantastic Medieval Scottish Romance. #2 in the highly anticipated series, “Lords of the Highlands”, but it can be read as a stand alone.

Fast paced with a most enjoyable cast of characters. Lady Magdalen Keith, an illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl and Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray are the stars of this most intriguing story of treason, passion, adventure, intrigues and romance. Can Magdalen and Aiden save her father from the gallows, as their love blossoms?

Once again, Ms. Jarecki has created a story readers can relate to, and love in fall with, as they transverse the terrain of politics, love and treason. Another absolute heart pounding tale by the fabulous Amy Jarecki! I can’t wait for the “Highland Guardian”. Ms. Jarecki is a master Medieval Scottish romance! She brings the characters to life on the pages of another great read! Her vitualizations, and her details brings the Highlands to life for readers. An absolute must read for fans of Highland Romance, brawn Highlanders and the feisty lasses who tame their hearts. Another WOW story!!

THE HIGHLANDER’S TEMPTATION ~ELIZA KNIGHT with #Excerpt and #Review

Prequel to the Stolen Bride Series…

Desire tempted them, but love conquered all…

Laird Jamie Montgomery is a warrior with a mission. When he travels to the northern Highlands on the orders of William Wallace, temptation in the form of an alluring lass, could be his undoing.

Lady Lorna Sutherland can’t resist the charms of one irresistible Highlander. Though she’s been forbidden, she breaks every rule for the pleasure of his intoxicating embrace.

When their love is discovered, Jamie is tossed from Sutherland lands under threat of death. But danger can’t keep the two of them apart. No matter what perils may try to separate them—Lorna and Jamie swear they’ll find a way to be together.

Spring, 1282
Highlands, Scotland
THEY galloped through the eerie moonlit night. Warriors cloaked by darkness. Blending in with the forest, only the occasional glint of the moon off their weapons made their presence seem out of place.
’Twas chilly for spring, and yet, they rode hard enough the horses were lathered with sweat and foaming at the mouth. But the Montgomery clan wasn’t going to be pushed out of yet another meeting of the clans, not when their future depended on it. This meeting would put their clan on the map, make them an asset to their king and country. As it was, years before King Alexander III had lost one son and his wife. He’d not remarried and the fate of the country now relied on one son who didn’t feel the need to marry. The prince toyed with his life as though he had a death wish, fighting, drinking, and carrying on without a care in the world. The king’s only other chance at a succession was his daughter who’d married but had not yet shown any signs of a bairn filling her womb. If something were to happen to the king, the country would erupt into chaos. Every precaution needed to be taken.
Young Jamie sat tall and proud upon his horse. Even prouder was he, that his da, the fearsome Montgomery laird, had allowed him to accompany the group of a half dozen seasoned warriors—the men who sat on his own clan council—to the meeting. The fact that his father had involved him in matters of state truly made his chest puff five times its size.
After being fostered out the last seven years, Jamie had just returned to his father’s home. At age fourteen, he was ready to take on the duties of eldest son, for one day he would be laird. This was the perfect opportunity to show his da all he’d learned. To prove he was worthy.
Laird Montgomery held up his hand and all the riders stopped short. Puffs of steam blew out in miniature clouds from the horses’ noses. Jamie’s heart slammed against his chest and he looked from side to side to make sure no one could hear it. He was a man after all, and men shouldn’t be scared of the dark. No matter how frightening the sounds were.
Carried on the wind were the deep tones of men shouting and the shrill of a woman’s screams. Prickles rose on Jamie’s arms and legs. They must have happened upon a robbery or an ambush. When he’d set out to attend his father, he’d not counted on a fight. Nay, Jamie merely thought to stand beside his father and demand a place within the Bruce’s High Council.
Swallowing hard, he glanced at his father, trying to assess his thoughts, but as usual, the man sat stoic, not a hint of emotion on his face.
The laird glanced at his second in command and jutted his chin in silent communication. The second returned the nod. Jamie’s father made a circling motion with his fingers, and several of the men fanned out.
Jamie observed the exchange, his throat near to bursting with questions. What was happening?
Finally, his father motioned Jamie forward. Keeping his emotions at bay, Jamie urged his mount closer. His father bent toward him, indicating for Jamie to do the same, then spoke in a hushed tone.
“We’re nearly to Sutherland lands. Just on the outskirts, son. ’Tis an attack, I’m certain. We mean to help.”
Jamie swallowed past the lump in his throat and nodded. The meeting was to take place at Dunrobin Castle. Why that particular castle was chosen, Jamie had not been privy to. Though he speculated ’twas because of how far north it was. Well away from Stirling where the king resided.
“Are ye up to it?” his father asked.
Tightening his grip on the reins, Jamie nodded. Fear cascaded along his spine, but he’d never show any weakness in front of his father, especially now that he’d been invited on this very important journey.
“Good. ’Twill give ye a chance to show me what ye’ve learned.”
Again, Jamie nodded, though he disagreed. Saving people wasn’t a chance to show off what he’d learned. He could never look at protecting another as an opportunity to prove his skill, only as a chance to make a difference. But he kept that to himself. His da would never understand. If making a difference proved something to his father, then so be it.
An owl screeched from somewhere in the distance as it caught onto its prey, almost in unison with the blood curdling scream of a woman.
His father made a few more hand motions and the rest of their party followed him as they crept forward at a quickened pace on their mounts, avoiding making any noise.
The road ended on a clearing, and some thirty horse-lengths away a band of outlaws circled a trio—a lady, one warrior, and a lad close to his own age.
The outlaws caught sight of their approach, shouting and pointing. His father’s men couldn’t seem to move quickly enough and Jamie watched in horror as the man, woman and child were hacked down. All three of them on the ground, the outlaws turned on the Montgomery warriors and rushed forward as though they’d not a care in the world.
Jamie shook. He’d never been so scared in his life. His throat had long since closed up and yet his stomach was threatening to purge everything he’d consumed that day. Even though he felt like vomiting, a sense of urgency, and power flooded his veins. Battle-rush, he’d heard it called by the seasoned warriors. And it was surging through his body, making him tingle all over.
The laird and his men raised their swords in the air, roaring out their battle cries. Jamie raised his sword to do the same, but a flash of gold behind a large lichen-covered boulder caught his attention. He eased his knees on his mount’s middle.
What was that?
Another flash of gold — was that blonde hair? He’d never seen hair like that before.
Jamie turned to his father, intent to point it out, but his sire was several horse-lengths ahead and ready to engage the outlaws, leaving it up to Jamie to investigate.
After all, if there was another threat lying in wait, was it not up to someone in the group to seek them out? The rest of the warriors were intent on the outlaws which left Jamie to discover the identity of the thief.
He veered his horse to the right, galloping toward the boulder. A wee lass darted out, lifting her skirts and running full force in the opposite direction. Jamie loosened his knees on his horse and slowed. That was not what he’d expected. At all. Jamie anticipated a warrior, not a tiny little girl whose legs were no match for his mount. As he neared, despite his slowed pace, he feared he’d trample the little imp.
He leapt from his horse and chased after her on foot. The lass kept turning around, seeing him chasing her. The look of horror on her face nearly broke his heart. Och, he was no one to fear. But how would she know that? She probably thought he was after her like the outlaws had been after the man, woman and lad.
“’Tis all right!” he called. “I will nay harm ye!”
But she kept on running, and then was suddenly flying through the air, landing flat on her face.
Jamie ran toward her, dropping to his knees as he reached her side and she pushed herself up.
Her back shook with cries he was sure she tried hard to keep silent. He gathered her up onto his knees and she pressed her face to his leine shirt, wiping away tears, dirt and snot as she sobbed.
“Momma,” she said. “Da!”
“Hush, now,” Jamie crooned, unsure of what else he could say. She must have just watched her parents and brother get cut to the ground. Och, what an awful sight for any child to witness. Jamie shivered, at a loss for words.
“Blaney!” she wailed, gripping onto his shirt and yanking. “They hurt!”
Jamie dried her tears with the cuff of his sleeve. “Your family?” he asked.
She nodded, her lower lip trembling, green-blue eyes wide with fear and glistening with tears. His chest swelled with emotion for the little imp and he gripped her tighter.
“Do ye know who the men were?”

“Bad people,” she mumbled.

My thoughts:

The Highlander’s Temptation by Eliza Knight is another great Medieval Romance. A prequel to  the “Stolen Bride” series, but can be read as a stand alone.

An absolute delight to read. Loved everything about this story, the characters and the storyline. You can’t go wrong with an Eliza Knight story. Magnificently written with passionate, and powerful characters. A must for fans of Highlanders and the lasses who win their hearts.

A MOST UNLIKELY DUKE~SOPHIE BARNES with #Giveaway, #Excerpt, and #Review

He never thought he’d become a duke,
or that the secrets of his past will cost him his greatest love…
A MOST UNLIKELY DUKE
Diamonds in the Rough #1
Sophie Barnes
Releasing June 27, 2017
Avon Books

Raphe
Matthews hasn’t stepped foot in polite circles since a tragedy left his
once-noble family impoverished and in debt. The bare-knuckle boxer has spent
the last fifteen years eking out an existence for himself and his two sisters.
But when a stunning reversal of fortunes lands Raphe the title of Duke of
Huntley, he’s determined to make a go of becoming a proper lord, but he’ll need
a little help and his captivating neighbor might be just the woman for the job…
After her
sister’s scandalous match, Lady Gabriella knows the ton’s eyes are on her. Agreeing
to tutor the brutish new duke can only lead to ruin. Although she tries to
control her irresistible attraction to Raphe, every day she spends with him
only deepens her realization that this may be the one man she cannot do
without. And as scandal threatens to envelope them both, she must decide if she
can risk everything for love with a most unlikely duke.

“Ye fought well today, lad,” a man’s voice suddenly spoke from directly behind him.

Bristling, Raphe set down his beer on the counter and turned to face his handler, whose attire—a purple velvet jacket and matching top hat—lent an air of flamboyance unmatched by anyone else. And yet, in spite of the fine attire, there was nothing cultured about this man, a scoundrel who’d gained his wealth through illicit deals and by taking advantage of others. His origins were questionable, but rumor had it he’d killed more than once in pursuit of power.
Raphe didn’t know what to believe. All he knew was that in spite of his own prejudices, crime in St. Giles had decreased since Carlton Guthrie’s arrival eighteen years earlier. Or so he’d been told.
“Mr. Guthrie. Good to see ye.” A blatant lie, if ever there was one.
Guthrie’s moustache twitched. “Likewise.” He sounded jovial, but only a fool would mistake that for kindness. Least of all when his henchman, a scarred boulder of a Scotsman by the name of MacNeil, stood at his right shoulder. Guthrie nodded toward Ben, who returned the salutation.
“Come. Share a drink with me,” Guthrie said, addressing Raphe. “We’ve much to discuss, you ‘n I.”
“And Thompson?” Raphe asked, not wanting to abandon his friend.
“I’m sure he’ll be willin’ to wait for ye till ye get back.” Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a gold coin and dropped it in front of Ben. “For yer trouble. What I ‘ave to say to Matthews ‘ere doesn’t concern ye. Understand?”
Raphe glared at Guthrie for a moment before
looking at Ben. “I’m sorry. I—”
“No worries,” Ben said, pocketing the coin that would keep his family fed for the next few days. “I’ll see ye tomorrow at work, aye?”
Nodding, Raphe watched him go.
“Well?” Guthrie’s voice drew Raphe’s attention back to him. “ ‘Ow about that drink then?” Eyeing first Guthrie and then MacNeil, Raphe gave a curt nod. “By all means.”
Guthrie’s eyes sparkled. “Excellent.” His lips stretched into a smile. “Follow me.” Turning away, he led Raphe through the taproom, where tobacco smoke mingled with the smell of roasting meat and beer. Dice rolled across one table in a game of hazard. A hand touched his thigh, inappropriately stroking upward until he pushed it away.
“No’ in the mood, luv?” the woman to whom it belonged asked. She was sitting down, her legs spread across the lap of a man who was busily burying his face between her half-exposed breasts. Pitying the life she’d been dealt, he told her gently,
“I’ve not the time.”
“La’er then?” she called as he strode away, not answering her question. Blessedly, his sisters had managed to avoid such a fate.
“ ‘Ave a seat,” Guthrie said moments later as they stepped inside a private room at the end of a hallway. It was sparsely furnished, with just a plain wooden table and four chairs. On top of the table stood a pitcher and a couple of mugs. “Some ale for me champion?” Guthrie asked, indicating the pitcher. Grabbing a chair, Raphe dropped down onto it and poured himself a drink, while Guthrie claimed the other chair with more finesse. “Will ye ‘ave some?” Raphe asked, indicating the same pitcher. Guthrie beamed. “Don’t mind if I do.” He waited for Raphe to pour before reaching for the mug and raising it. “To yer victory today.”
“To me victory,” Raphe muttered, downing the bitter resentment he felt with a brew to match.
“I’ve ‘igh ‘opes for ye,” Guthrie said, tapping a finger against his nose. “Unbeaten for the fifteenth time. That’s unprecedented, tha’ is.” Raphe saw the spark that lit his eyes, like the
promise of treasure or some such thing. “Wha’ do ye want, Guthrie?”
“So cynical, Matthews.” Guthrie’s upper lip drew back, revealing his teeth. “Must a man always want some’in? Can’t ‘e simply enjoy a drink wi’ an old friend?”
Old friend?
Hardly.
“Not when ‘e’s got ’im by the bollocks.” Guthrie’s mouth tightened, his eyes darkening just enough to offer a glimpse of his true nature. “Is tha’ ‘ow ye see our relationship, laddy?”
His demeaning tone made Raphe’s muscles flex. He glanced at MacNeil, who stood by the door, running his thumb along the edge of a wicked blade, and was instantly reminded of the punishment he’d suffered the one time when he’d been foolish enough to try and thwart Guthrie’s wishes. Shoulders tensing, Raphe returned his gaze to the man who owned him.
“ ‘Ow else should I see it? I’m yer puppet, ain’t I?” Guthrie nodded. “Aye, but ye’re me favorite one. Which is why I’d like to offer ye a deal.”
Raphe stiffened. “What sor’ of deal?”
“The sor’ that could set ye free, laddy.” A tempting notion, but surely too good to be true.
Still, he couldn’t help but ask. “What do ye have in mind?”
Leaning forward, Guthrie placed his elbows on the table, the fingers of his right hand reaching up to stroke his chin. “Ye see, there’s goin’ to be an opportunity soon—a grand one, at that.”
Raphe crossed his arms. “Ye don’t say.”
The corner of Guthrie’s eye flinched. “No need to get cocky, now.” Snapping his fingers, he drew MacNeil closer. “Give the laddy ‘is earnin’s.” There was a pause, and then a pouch dropped onto the table with a jangling thump. “Naturally, we’ve kept our share.”
A fat 90 percent.
“Naturally,” Raphe echoed. He didn’t bother to hide his displeasure.
“But . . .” Guthrie took another sip of his ale.
“Word ‘as it, the Bull will be comin’ to town in a month or so.” Raphe straightened in his chair, while Guthrie wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, removing a line of foam. “If ye figh’ ’im and ye win, ye’ll be debt-free. The winnings are gonna be that huge.”
Raphe didn’t doubt it. The Bull was, after all, the bare-knuckle boxing world champion—undefeated since beating Tobias Flannigan several years earlier.
Since then, he’d crippled several of his opponents. The man was a legend. “I’ll do it,” Raphe said without blinking.
“But if ye lose . . .”
“I won’t,” Raphe assured him.
“But if ye do . . .”
Grabbing the pouch that still sat on the table, Raphe pocketed his money. “I know the risk, Guthrie, an’ I’m willin’ to take it.”

My thoughts:

A Most Unlikely Duke by Sophie Barnes
is an interesting and stimulating Regency Romance. Book 1 in a new and what promises to be an incredible series, “Diamonds in the Rough”. Fast paced, exciting with engaging characters and an intriguing plot. Our hero, Raphe, is certainly a diamond in the rough, but an exciting one, to be sure.

Raphe Matthews, a bare-knuckle boxer who, was born into the gentry, but due to a tragedy, he and his family are left impoverished and in debt. Raphe, at age of eight, started taking care of himself and his three siblings, working on the docks and prize fighting. Unfortunately, one sibling was lost to the streets St. Giles, which still eats at him. He has spent the last fifteen grueling years, attempting to make a living for himself and his two surviving younger sisters. When a stunning reversal of fortune hands Raphe the title of Duke of Huntley, he is determined to become a proper Duke and give his sisters a better life.

Lady Gabriella, Ralpe’s new neighbor, has been brow beaten by her parents, since her sister’s scandalous match, she knows the ton’s eyes are on her to find a proper match. However, she agrees to tutor the new duke, a brutish hunk of a Duke, at that, but it can only lead to her ruin, but she agrees anyway. Raphe, is an honorable man, who honors his commitments, even if it would bring scandal to them all.

Together, Raphe and Gabriella, fight their attraction to each other, as well as
the scandal that is brewing. This story is heartwarming, as well as, intriguing, entertaining and proves, you can overcome the circumstances you are born into, by no fault of your own.
I was drawn into this story from the first page until the last, and can not wait to see what the next book in what promises, to be a most incredible series, will be about.

Ms. Barnes, is an amazing and talented author, who draws the reader into her stories with her characterizations, her details to Regency history, and her dramatization of the situations her characters find themselves in. “A Most Unlikely Duke”, is powerful, compelling and an excellent choice for any fan of historical fiction, romance, drama with stunning characters and a most unlikely plot. Masterfully written. A really great read, in my opinion!

The last thing traveling nurse Evie Steele expects to find aboard the RV housing her mobile health clinic is her brother’s best friend. As always, Deke’s close proximity stirs her forbidden desires and long-suppressed dreams. …but now his secrets could destroy them both.

Special agent Deke Conrad is in big trouble. Not only does he have a thing for his friend’s little sister, but what should be a routine mission is turning into a tour of temptation and survival. He fooled himself into thinking he could keep the beautiful and dynamic Evie in the dark while he used the cover of her Med Mobile to track down a merciless wildlife trafficker. But he didn’t anticipate the lure of her scent or the warmth of her smile…or the string of dead bodies littering their path.

When Evie winds up in his enemy’s crosshairs, Deke must unleash every weapon in his arsenal to save her, including his heart. But will he be too late?

 My thoughts:

ROAMING WILD by Tracey Devlyn is an amazing Romantic Suspense. “Steele Ridge” Book 6 , but can be read as a stand alone. If you enjoy family saga, then I’d suggest reading the other 5 books in the series. However, not necessary to enjoy this story.

The hero was a ruggedly sexy, strong and a protective, alpha male. The heroine was feisty, brave and brazen, a true heroine. I loved Evie and Deke, their story was intriguing in itself, but when added in the suspense, and mystery, WOW!

The conflict was enough to keep me turning pages. I was emotionally invested from the first page to the last. The plot flowed seamlessly and continuingly. Fast paced and action packed with conflict, danger around every corner and the wildlife aspect was a plus for me. I enjoyed the fact Evie had issues, with panic attacks, as one who suffers from them occasionally, the author nailed it!

An intriguing story with all the drama, emotions, conflict, suspense, mystery and romance a great Romantic Suspense should have to impress readers and keep them returning to Steele Ridge. Simply flawless, in my humble opinion!

A must read for Romantic Suspense lovers, and fans of the “Steele Ridge” saga. Tracey Devlin is one of my favorite Romantic Suspense authors. She writes such thrilling, page turning stories, with emotional turmoil, as well as family oriented stories. The twists and turns were surprising, intriguing, and impressive. Another hit for Tracey Devlin!! Can’t wait to visit “Steele Ridge” again, and learn what is in store for readers and the Steele family. I adore the Steele family!

THE HIGHLANDER’S SIN~~ELIZA KNIGHT with #Review

He stole her away… But she set him free…

They called him The Priest. Maybe because of his billowing black robes and the steel crucifix that hung around his neck. Or perhaps it was because those who met him were compelled to pray. But Duncan Mackay was anything but a saint. He was a sinner—a paid mercenary. Until he met her, and she made him want to change his ways.

Lady Heather Sutherland, has never been compelled to follow rules. And this time, she’s gone too far. Following in the footsteps of her brothers and cousins, she chooses to join the fight for Scottish freedom—and gets herself abducted by a handsome, rogue warrior, whose touch is sweet sin.

Duncan’s duty was clear—steal Heather away from Dunrobin Castle. What he didn’t expect, was to be charmed by her spirit and rocked by her fiery kiss. Now, he doesn’t want deliver her to those who hired him, instead he wants to keep her all to himself.

Dunrobin Castle, Scottish Highlands
Summer, 1300
STONE cobbles were certainly the most uncomfortable place for knees to rest. Lady Heather, youngest sister to the powerful Earl of Sutherland, knelt before the altar in the family’s chapel. Even with the protection of layers of fabric between her bones and the flooring, she could feel bruises forming beneath the calluses on her knees.
The castle’s drafts had yet to reach this corner of space within the towers, and as a result, sweat dripped in unladylike fashion down her temples and spine. What she wouldn’t give to at least be able to fan herself, but she dared not move her hands from their place firmly pressed together in prayer.
Today would prove to be sweltering if the heat before dawn was any indication. And since Heather had an aversion to heat, she was more than likely going to be in a sour mood. The heaviness of the many layers she wore didn’t help the situation. Nor what she was about to do.
The chapel was dark, save the four candles she’d lit. The sun had yet to rise, and the three narrow windows, newly fixed with stained glass, let in none of the moon’s silver light.
Heather came to pray each morning, every morning, before the family rose. Typically because she had a lot more to confess than most. She was the first to admit she was not easy on her older brother, Magnus. Nor her aunts, any of her siblings, cousins and the staff in general. She might even be willing to admit that she single-handedly provided for their chaplain’s wealth, given that she was constantly slipping coins into his purse as penance or to buy an extra blessing.
But today was different.
On this day, she was going to change her future, forever.
The Scottish rebellion still raged on, despite the horrendous loss at the Battle of Falkirk. Heather wanted to be a part of it. Why should her brothers and cousins have all the fun? Before the rest of the household woke to say prayers, Heather planned to be well on her way to finding William Wallace. The man had taken a step back in the war for freedom. After their great loss, the warrior must have felt downtrodden, for he simply handed the reins of battle over to another. She was going to persuade him to rise up once more, to fight for what he thought was right, what she knew was right.
Robert the Bruce was not yet king—and though he was rumored to have sided with the English, Heather just couldn’t believe it. After all, Bruce and Red Comyn were now overseeing the resistance, but they lacked the heart of Wallace. The way Heather saw it, Wallace could turn a sheepherder into a seasoned warrior, and might even have the power to turn Englishmen into Scots—the latter was a bit of a reach, but just went to prove how much she believed in him.
A scraping to her left jolted Heather from her prayer. She sat back on her heels, hand falling to her hip where a twelve-inch dagger was slipped into its sheath.
“Who’s there?” Her voice echoed through the chapel.
A shadowy figure lurked just beyond the benches in the corner where their chaplain’s chamber was. Looked like a hulk of black. If she’d been more superstitious, she might have thought the devil was coming to pay her a visit like Aunt Fiona always threatened.
“Father Hurley?” She swiped a drip of sweat from her eyes. “Is that ye? Come away from the shadows.”
A shiver of fear skittered over her spine, settling like a solid stone in her belly.
The figure didn’t move.
Heather swallowed her fear and stood up, straightening her shoulders as much as she could, squaring her jaw. “Come into the light at once,” she ordered.
The shadow moved along the wall toward the front of the chapel. Heather followed him with her eyes. ’Twas not the devil but a man. Most definitely not Father Hurley. He was taller by at least a foot—and wide by about the same. His black robes billowed around his form, swishing around his ankles with each step, and sending whispers of fear with every move. The silver chain around his neck swung the large crucifix it held like a pendulum. Back and forth.
A man of the cloth? Her hair prickled. He looked like death come to take her.
Heather stared at the cross, at the man in robes, hypnotized by his stealthy, calculated movements, her eyes wide and immobilized. She finally blinked when they stung with dryness.
“Are ye new to Dunrobin?” she asked, refusing to believe he might be the reaper and wondering why no one had told her there was a new priest.
He stopped a few feet away, just outside the line of light from the candles.
“Nay.” His voice was deep, dark, and slid over her body shamefully, in a way that made her want to hear him speak again.
Lord, help her impetuous nature.
Heather made a sign of the cross. “I’ve not seen ye before now.” The slight quiver in her tone made her angry.
He didn’t answer. A long pause of silence ensued, making her uncomfortable. Her skin prickled.
“Where is Father Hurley? What are ye doing in here?” The questions tumbled from her tongue.
The man pointed toward the chaplain’s chamber. “He is there. Sleeping.”
Again that voice. Why did she like it so much? “And ye? What are ye doing out here? I’m…I’m praying. I want privacy.” She lifted her chin another notch, hoping the odd priest would leave her be, that he hadn’t noticed the slight stutter of her words. When she saw her brother Magnus, she was going to tell him about this odd priest and how uncomfortable he made her. Zounds! She wouldn’t get the chance before she left… The dawn of her new life would begin today. A note then. She would tell Magnus in a note.
“I’m afraid ye won’t be getting any privacy, my lady.” Confidence dripped from his words and slid over her skin in a way that felt wicked.
“Ye are not to talk to me in such a manner.” No matter how hard she tried, she sounded petulant rather than in control.
“And ye need to hold your tongue, ye saucy wench.”
Heather gasped, blanched. Pressed a hand to her chest and took a step back in shock. “What?”
“Ye heard me.” An underlying tone of amusement captured his voice.
Indeed she had, but no one had ever, ever, talked to her like that before.
“How dare ye?” She seethed, gripped her fingers around her dagger, though what she’d do with it, she had no clue. Killing a man of the cloth was a sin she’d never be able to pay her way out of.

“Enough bluster, my lady. I need ye to come with me.”

My thoughts:

The highlander’s Sin by Eliza Knight is yet another great addition to “The Stolen Bride” series.  While, #6 in this fantastic series, it can be read as a stand alone. Set against a Scottish Highlands backdrop in the 1300’s. What an exciting series!

Duncan Mackay, a  paid mercenary known as the “Priest”, despises the Sutherland clan. A saint he is not!  When he was a young lad of about seven summers old,  he watched his clan, and his parents murdered by the Sutherland clan. Now he’s on a quest to revenge their deaths. Lady Heather Sutherland, is the youngest sister to the Laird of the Sutherland clan. She’s  spirited, strong-well, feisty and trouble for Duncan and his poor heart.

Duncan and Heather has so much to offer readers. Their witty banter helps move “The Highlander’s Sin” along.  The danger, adventure, action, romance and amongst the turmoil they manage to find love, keeps readers on their toes. But will they finally find the HEA their both seek? Or lose all to a past that was beyond their control?

I loved Heather’s spunk, her way of managing to be uplifting during trails, was fantastic.  She was a bit needy at times, which was her way of coping.  Ah, Duncan, what can one say of a brawn Highlander, handsome as sin, brave and one who would protect his hostage with his own life. A heartwarming love story with twists and turns and plenty of action to keep readers turning pages. Ms. Knight manages to mix in some humorous moments into a story of turmoil and love.

I love Eliza Knight, her writing style is contagious to readers and fans alike. She writes so vividly and masterfully, fans will get caught up in a whirlwind of Scottish history and characters who capture their hearts.

Another fantastic read by Eliza Knight!  Pick up a copy today!

Excerpt 2.

“I should never have asked Alex to help me. It’s too dangerous. I should have simply hired someone to find my father and deliver a message, telling him what Fredrick was up to. Don’t you see, I’ve put all of us in danger, and if you help me I can hire someone in Palma, and then Alex can go back to England. I can see what returning to the Mediterranean is doing to him. He’s worried about me, about my father, and it’s not his responsibility.”

“You want me to go behind Alex’s back and help you hire someone else?”

“Alex is far too gallant to consider calling off the search. I have already tried to convince him to return home. But if we both persuade him that my father will be warned by the men we hire, then he might listen.”

He looked away before asking, “How can we trust anyone we hire in Palma?”

“I know Governor Crespo and his wife, Emilia, from my previous visits here with my father. They could help me find a reputable ship and men. They might even know what my father’s plans were.” She pleaded with him. “Won’t you help me try?”

David stood and moved to stand right in front of her, looking down at her for an age. On a sigh he said, “It would not change Alex’s plan. He would still sail to the Mediterranean.”

Something began to build inside. The cold dread of fear wrapped talons around her insides. “There would be no need for him to continue on to Greece.”

“He’s not going to Greece for your father. Or for you. Not entirely.”

Her legs began to buckle under her, and it was only David’s strong arms that stopped her from sliding to the floor. “Oh God, he’s going after Murad.” And she fainted.

My thoughts:

Addicted to the Duke by Bronwen Evans is #1 in what promises to be an intriguing new series, “Imperfect Lords”. Bronwen Evans continues to write, a brilliantly and masterfully work of romance! Such feelings and emotions shown throughout this powerful and compelling story, are hard to convene to readers. But she managed it, beautifully. Very impressive!

I loved Alex, his desire to survive, his revenge was well deserved, and his feelings of not being worthy was honest, and true feelings. I understand how people who have been or seen such abuse, could face such feelings. It addresses the inner turmoil of such things and how love can heal their wounds. Well done! It also addresses the issues of drug abuse and disabilities, tactfully and honestly. Alex defintely deserved a life of love and happiness. He did not deserve to feel shame for his misfortune, especially, since it was not his fault. To live in captivity for two years and survive, made him a better man, and helped to shape him into the man became.

Hestia was loveable, feisty, fearless, admirable, and very stubborn, albeit a bit naive, but she was determined to get her man. She also understood Alex, for what he was, not what he thought he should be, for people to respect him, and love him for himself. I think her love for Alex made her a bit reckless, at times. I liked how Hestia stood by Alex at all cost, even at her own risk. She was very determined to save her man.

I loved how Alex and Hestia, managed to push past their fears, insecurities, and their past to find healing, love, and just maybe a HEA.

I think “Addicted to the Duke” was an emotionally charged tale. One that deals with issues of sexual and drug abuse, as well as, opium addiction. Ms. Evans did a wonderful job writing about tough issues that are quiet common in today’s world. Readers will be able to connect to Alex and Hestia’s story. I certainly did! I know people who faced the same issues as Alex, some gave into the addiction for the oblivion it brought, others was overcome and couldn’t let it go. Sexual abuse, rather, male or female is devastating to all.

I read “Addicted to the Duke” in one day. I couldn’t put it down. I was glued to the pages of Alex and Hestia’s story, from the first page to the last. A must read Historical Romance. I can’t wait to read the book 2 in the “Imperfect Lords” series, they are certainly going to be, imperfect, flawed but oh so lovable. A must read Historical Romance.

Jenna Gibson MacKay has been widowed for two years. A fact she’s just learned to accept. But the man at the door may change everything. What does a woman do when the guy she’s mourned turns out to be a little less dead than she thought? Does she take him back or send him down the road?

Gordon MacKay went dark to save his wife from a threat she never knew existed. The computer software engineer was working on a secret government project as well as helping out The Omega Team when Eastern European hackers forced him to fake his death. But the hackers are back and threatening everything he holds dear. If he and Scott and Caroline, other Omega Team operatives cannot stop them, the criminals may blow up a thousand wedding guests. But how can they be stopped when no one has seen them and nobody knows what they want? And now that he’s returned from the dead, can he convince his wife to trust him enough to let him stay?

Excerpt

“Jenna.” Gordon lurched forward as his wife crumpled in a heap on the floor, that stupid table he’d made for her landing next to her. “Jenna!” Damn, Grey was right. He should never have come back, especially not like this. Dropping to his knees at her side, he continued to call her name. He sat cross-legged and lifted her over his lap, stroking her satin cheek. She hadn’t changed much, except maybe lost a few pounds. More than a few. The pictures Grey’s contact had sent had not done justice to her weight loss. Damn. “My poor baby. What did I do to you?”

All his decisions had made sense until this moment when he held her pale, limp form. Now, nothing did. He’d left to protect her and returned for the same reason, but maybe it would have been better to take her somewhere far away to start with. How could he have asked her to live underground somewhere, far from her beloved inn and all her friends, and both of their families? Not to mention the threat had international roots and could follow them almost anywhere. No, the only way he’d been able to guarantee her safety was to be “dead.”

Even most of The Omega Team did not know that Timothy Baker who had worked from home doing computer research, thinly veiled hacking, and developing some new software for the past two years was Gordon MacKay. Everything in his HR file masked his real identity, his past, and his current location. They’d planned to keep it like that permanently, until the current crisis arose.

He had one chance to fix things, to make it right and eliminate the threat once again rearing its ugly head. This time, it menaced more than him. More than the two of them. This time, the ugliness hovered over everyone in Cedar Valley. The entire MacKay clan gathered for the weddings of two of Fire Chief Mac MacKay’s grandchildren, unaware of the danger swirling around them. His family and oldest friends’ lives were in danger

THE HIGHLANDER’S TRIUMPH~~ELIZA KNIGHT~~w/#Excerpt & #Review

He was a warrior fighting for Scottish freedom.

She was his enemy’s mistress.

Laird Brandon Sinclair has given his life to the Scottish cause. Swearing fealty to Robert the Bruce, he will stop at nothing to see oppression end.

Lady Mariana wants nothing more than to break free of the tyrannical hold the English king has on her. When he sends her to Scotland with a message for the rebels, instead of obeying his orders, she finds herself submitting to her desires. After one sizzling, life-altering night, Brandon and Mariana must part ways. But Mariana has no intention of betraying her heart again.

And Brandon is determined to get her back. Stealing Longshank’s secrets felt like victory, but taking his woman will be this Highlander’s ultimate triumph.

Nearing spring, 1298
Highlands, Scotland
SMOKE filled Laird Brandon Sinclair’s lungs as he rode on horseback with his men toward the north of Kinterloch Village.
High above the wooden wall, flames burst in hungry orange licks. A vengeful fire that would turn everything in its path to ash. The late afternoon sky was already overcast, but the smoke of the blaze made it nearly black.
No villagers ran from the fire. No animals screamed. The chaos that should be erupting with the flames was non-existent—as if deserted. But he knew it couldn’t be. The people, the animals, were either trapped or had managed to get out from a different gate.
The Scottish troops’ fearless leader, William Wallace, had already charged through the front gates into the inferno as if he were a man with a death wish. He’d ordered Brandon and his men to check the north side for survivors. Brandon’s cousin, Ronan Sutherland, had taken his warriors to the west side near the loch.
Far from his castle and lands in the north of the Highlands, Brandon had traveled to Eilean Donan the month prior to help his cousins Daniel Murray and Ronan along with William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in the war against the English. But it seemed now it wasn’t only the English they were fighting—but traitor Scots too.
A loud crash reverberated through the air as another building collapsed behind the wall. A rush of heat surged his way, and a cloud of dark smoke billowed into the sky, in stark contrast to the world around them, a peaceful, beautiful place with lush pine trees and gorse bushes, even in winter. Hell set in the middle of heaven.
Doubt darkened his mood. There would be no survivors. Not in a raging inferno like this—one that rivaled Hades. He shook his head and spurred his horse forward. His chestnut colored warhorse, Checkmate, pounded the earth with his massive hooves.
If only they’d been able to get to the village before Laird Ross—traitor to all Scots and their ancestors. The damned bastard had defected to the English, and since doing so, had laid a path of destruction across the Highlands. There wasn’t a man Brandon knew that hadn’t been affected by Ross’ treachery. Hell, it seemed like the man was on a mission to make enemies with everyone of true Scottish heart.
Brandon’s thoughts were cut midway when they rounded the burning wall on the north side.
“Halt!” he shouted to his men, reining in Checkmate.
A woman burst through the wooden gate, exposing the interior angry flaming village. Hair black as a midnight sky, skin covered in soot. Her dark green gown was covered by a singed, once high-quality, wool cloak. She tripped, falling onto her hands and knees, coughing, yet she did not stop. The lass crawled forward, every move beleaguered in her attempt to escape the flaming village.

Without a thought, Brandon jumped from Checkmate, and ran toward her.

My thoughts:

The Highlander’s Triumph by Eliza Knight is an interesting Medieval Romance, set in 1298
Highlands, Scotland. #5 in “The Stolen Bride” series, but it can be read as a stand alone.

“He was a warrior fighting for Scottish freedom. She was his enemy’s mistress.”

Laird Brandon Sinclair is a brawn highlander, who has sworn his life to the Scottish clause and his fealty to Robert the Bruce. Lady Mariana, is a French lady, who was given to King Edward as his mistress. She was sent to a village to draw the Bruce’s men into a trap. All she wants is to escape the tyrannical King Edward,  but she’s left in a burning village, where Brandon and his men find her.  Was she sent to spy by Longshanks?

Brandon and Mariana are a complex but intriguing couple. An English King’s mistress and a Scottish warrior, will they find love and a HEA?

Slow at times, but generally a good Scottish Romance,  although, “The Highlander’s Triumph” was not my favorite of this series, I found I was invested in the story, the plot and the characters.

With danger around every corner,  sparks flying between Brandon and Mariana, treachery, and more, this story does have much to recommend it to readers.

I have been waiting patiently for “The Highlander’s Sin”, which is next on my list to read. “The Stolen Bride” series is a complicated,  compelling and intriguing series. I would recommend reading Brandon and Mariana’s story! A good Scottish Romance!
