Welcome, Jess Michaels!

A Day in the Life
Jess Michaels

Hi everyone and thanks to April for letting me stop by today. The last couple of weeks have been so very exciting for me as I had a new book out June 24, the last in my Pleasure Wars series, Beautiful Distraction. And if that wasn’t enough TODAY my new series launched with the release of A Matter of Sin (The Ladies Book of Pleasures 1). Add to that we just got new flooring through our whole house. So pretty much I’ve been a tiny bit crazed for the last month.

A writer’s life is like that. Or maybe it’s just mine. So when April suggested maybe I write a little about a day in my life, I laughed a little, I might have cried a tiny bit and then I decided, what the heck. So I present to you a little view into my day to day life. Please don’t run screaming from the room when I’m done.

My day really depends a great deal on whether I’m currently writing or not. When I am, I get up around 7-8 am. I try to eat breakfast every day and we’re paleo, so that usually involves making something. But that’s okay, it gives me a chance to wake up and watch a little news. Once breakfast is over, I head to my office. I tend to answer email and maybe do a little marketing before I write. I have a page goal each day so that I meet my deadlines and I’ll generally work on that until my goal is met. That can be anything from an hour and a half to three or four hours, depending on how hard the writing is that day. But normally it’s a couple hours of solid writing work punctuated by occasional spot research and email.

By that time it’s nearly lunch, so I’ll do more email and then eat. My husband also works at home. He’s my assistant and also runs a site for authors, so we’ll make food and eat together or go out to eat. This is usually when I do tidying up around the house, too. Once I’m done I lock down for marketing. Now the cool thing about marketing is that a lot of it is kind of fun. I love doing Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, blogging, Pinterest and the like. But wow, there is a lot of it. I’ll usually spend three or more hours during this period working on those things. A blog like this one can take half an hour to an hour, so it really depends on what is on my plate. Today, for example I had 14 things on my daily to do list that were marketing related, plus 5 chapters of a book to edit. One of those things was “write blogs” and I had three of those to do.

Once I’ve done some of that marketing, I will take a break, clean up some more, check the mail, make dinner (or go out) and then the fun part comes. I go back to work. Sometimes that means going back to write some more or to edit or to market. Sometimes all three if I have a lot going on (like when I was prepping this blog).

Is it a lot of work? Yes, indeed it is. Sometimes I’m tired. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and have a serious cry. But it’s just what I need to do because writing and publishing and getting books sold is my number one priority. And it’s still, even on its worst day, the best job in the world. The fact that I can make my living doing what I love and maybe even touch some readers along the way is all worth it!

Plus, I also try to take breaks. This year my husband and I aren’t travelling for fun, but next year we’ll go to Paris for the last stage of the Tour de France, we play video games together or go for walks or the gym. I see my adorable nephews at least once a week and I play HARD. So it’s a tradeoff. I work for myself and that is awesome. But God, my boss is tough.

So that’s it. I hope you’ll check out my books. A Matter of Sin starts a new series, so it’s a great place to start if you’re a new-to-me reader! Plus, you pay my bills and make the work all worthwhile.

A Matter of Sin ( The Ladies Book of Pleasure #1)

July 15, 2014 (From Amazon)

Scandal between the pages…surrender between the sheets.

The Ladies Book of Pleasures, Book 1

The widowed Lady Isabel Avenbury has one remaining younger sister to shepherd into an advantageous marriage, and then she will be free. Free to take a lover to fill her lonely nights—the only option left for a woman on the delicate edge of a certain age.

Except when she chaperones her sister to a country house party, she is taken aback by her sudden, undeniable attraction to the host. And deliciously scandalized when she finds a copy of the notorious, much-gossiped-about Ladies Book of Pleasures in his library.

When Seth Rowland, Marquis Lyndham, notices his book is missing, his interest is piqued as to which of the potential young brides at his party has absconded with it—and he’s shocked to discover it’s Isabel. Though older than the women he’d planned to court, the powerful beauty exudes a sensuality he cannot ignore.

The book inspires them to begin a desperate, passionate affair. But their time together is running out and they must choose. Follow society’s rules, or take a chance at love.

Warning: Found within are highly scandalous books that trigger passionate desires, surrender in the orangery and possibly true love.

Can true love begin with a lie?

The Pleasure Wars, Book 4

It has been a particularly trying day for Olivia Cranfield. Despite her impeccable manners, stylish clothing and posh accent, another protector has detected her lowborn status and rejected her out of hand.

When fellow courtesan Violet invites her to come to Bath to help with the wicked seduction of the scarred, reclusive Earl of Windbury, Olivia jumps at the offer, eager for some excitement and a change of scenery.

The moment Malcolm Graham lays eyes on the delectable woman lurking in the bathhouse alley, he knows she’s a decoy to keep him busy while her friend seduces the earl inside. For a moment, he allows her to play her game…but one touch, and all he can think about is ending the two years of self-denial he’s endured in the name of friendship.

Instant attraction quickly turns into a decidedly erotic affair that makes Olivia question all she’s ever known about passion. But when the truth behind Violet’s assignment comes to light, betrayal threatens to bring everything they’ve built crashing down around Olivia’s broken heart.

Warning: This book overlaps with Beauty and the Earl, so some passages may seem familiar to readers of both. Contains a lady lying for a good cause, a gentleman as loyal to his friends as he is passionate in the bedchamber, and a steamy affair that will change them both forever.

  2. It was interesting because I didn't realize how much time authors spent on marketing.

  3. Jess's books are fantastic! Thanks for sharing the interesting post A Day in the Life. With all of the work involved with publishing and marketing a book, I am amazed how an author finds the time to write.

  4. Well, like I said, I do my writing before I work on anything else. If I don't write, I have nothing to market, so the writing is still the first priority. 🙂

  5. It really does sound like there is more time spent of promotion than actual writing. I guess it would even out over time.

  6. You would really want to be a writer to put in so many hours a day to write a book.
