FOREVER PARANORMAL ROMANCE GIVEAWAY/VISIT WITH STELLA CAMERON AND CYNTHIA GARNER…

FOREVER AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS:

PARANORMAL ROMANCE AUTHOR STELLA CAMERON AND FOREVER DEBUT AUTHOR CYNTHIA GARNER!!!

MBA&M:  Your debut novel is a dark and sexy paranormal romance series set in Scottsdale. What was the appeal of this setting and why the cross of supernatural entities?

CYNTHIA:  I had already written a series that started in Tucson and ended in Tucson, so I didn’t want to use that setting again, but I wanted to keep it in Arizona. Scottsdale is a beautiful town and is right outside Phoenix, so it would make sense that it could be a regional “hub” for preternaturals in the west.

MBA&M: How many books will be in this series?

CYNTHIA: Three novels and one novella.

MBA&M: Who would you say your paranormal writing style most resembles? Why?

CYNTHIA: I think that readers who like Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jacquelyn Frank or Larissa Ione would enjoy my books. My writing is similar to theirs in that I have Alpha heroes and kick-ass heroines, but also some humor because I think in life there are times when you just gotta laugh, you know?

Determined to prove she’s more human than not, she devotes herself to solving crimes between the world’s mortals and its most unsavory undead. But her latest case brings her face to face with the one vampire she could never resist . . .
Called in to investigate a string of violent murders, special agent Tobias Caine isn’t interested in rekindling his relationship with Nix. Yet one look and the vampire knows his need for her is as strong as ever. Once, their all-consuming passion nearly cost Nix her fragile hold on her humanity. Now, as their hunger for one another intensifies, exposing them to an unimaginable danger, it could cost them both their lives.

GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH KATY WALTERS,AUTHOR OF “STONE RELICS”…

MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS!!

KATY WALTERS

Good morning, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today.

Hello and thank you so much for inviting me.

MBA&M: Tell our readers a few tidbits about yourself?

KATY: I live on the South Coast of England with my husband and golden retriever Lily. Her pedigree name is Fairey Magic, the breeder’s choice, and she has turned out to be sheer magic. The family has grown and flown leaving us times to pursue our various interests.  I set out as a singer, first in opera and then pop. But then on meeting my husband I found my career took me away so much and I missed him, besides we wanted a family. I had always been interested in psychology so with his support, I studied and gained degrees in that. I was a psychologist for years and then changed direction after taking a degree in Eng. Lit and Creative Writing. It took a while as I missed the clients. But now I spend my time writing and dreaming up plots for more books.

For relaxation, I paint – pop art style or impressionist, or take Lily for long walks along the beach. I often take my Notepad and thermos flask to the beach hut to gain inspiration, and then find myself writing for hours. Lily loves it as she is either chasing seagulls or playing with other dogs or children on the beach.

MBA&M: What was the appeal of writing a Sci-fi story “Stone Relics”?

KATY: Part of my degree in psychology was in Artificial Intelligence. Since then, I have always been fascinated with androids and robotics. I do often read New Scientist just out of curiosity as to where we as a race are headed in the technological age. .  To me it is fascinating where the latest technology and medical advances will take us as humans.  How will we evolve and adapt to the organ transplants, cloning, and computer implants?  What will it feel like to live in intelligent houses who respond to a gesture of a hand, increasing heat in the house, or summoning an android to prepare dinner or even the kitchen itself to prepare the food and cook it?  How will women respond, physically mentally or spiritually to the advances of a male hybrid, man and computer combined – a cyborg?  So Stone Relics gave me a chance to explore these issues more fully.  It took so much research to write the book and again was fascinating.

MBA&M: What are some of the challenges in writing “Stone Relics”?

KATY: The challenge was to make it credible.  After all the story is set only fifty-three years in the future.  So judging from say the 1960’s to now, I asked myself how far have we advanced in our living habits, interests, hobbies, medicine, and so on since then. There were so many things not around at that time, computers yes, ones housed in extensive buildings. The PC and the Internet did not exist neither did cell phones. Deep Space research as we know it today was indeed science fiction.  Cloning and genetics and IVF were fantasy at least in the public arena.  So the challenge was to make the things happening in 2065 believable. I thought the best way to achieve a realistic near future story was to adapt the latest researches of today – take them further into science fiction.

MBA&M: Katy, have you always wanted to be an author or what made you want to become an author?

KATY: No, I have never thought of being an author although I have always written.   I wrote fairy stories for my sister hospitalized for most of her young life. Later on, I wrote reams of poetry and children’s short stories but never thought of publishing them.  I would just type them up and put them into files. They were mainly part of what I considered to be a spiritual journey. Then for a change I did the course on Eng. Lit and CW and that as I said above changed my life.

MBA&M: If you could become one of the characters in “Stone Relics”, who would it be and why?

KATY: I would choose Lucy as she does all that I love doing. More so, as she has access to the latest technology in healing the human brain and mind. She also lives in a dream of a cottage in the countryside and  only minutes from the sea. My own house is great but I’ve always been fascinated with thatch cottages from the sixteenth century.

MBA&M: Where did the idea of “Stone Relics” come from?

KATY: It came from a course of Artificial Intelligence which was part of the psychology degree.  I have always since then been fascinated with computers, robotics and the latest medical technological advances.  I would often muse as I said above, on how would men and women react to each other in an age of complete human transplants, cloning and cyborgs. How would say a woman react to the sexual advances of a man part human part machine. Where would love fit into the equation.

MBA&M: Which character do you most identify with in “Stone Relics”?

KATY: Again it would be Lucy, but also there are parts of Ben in there, parts of their life stories which reflect mine.

MBA&M: What is on the horizon for Katy Walters?

KATY: I have just finished one and a half books of a trilogy. This is a tempestuous romance of two couples set against the Great Irish Famine of 1845-49 and the present.

MBA&M: Katy, tell our readers where to find you and where they can find “Stone Relics”?

Stone Relics by Katy Walters(from Nurture Virtual Tours)

“Stone Relics is a high octane thriller packed with brilliant concepts – of genetics and mind-blowing technology — it shocks and inspires.”

Chief Superintendent Ben Tobin, a Super Cop is an enigma, working undercover for MI8, his true identity known only to the few. In a world of humans, clones, cyborgs, things can go wrong – mutations, psychosis and perversion. It is 2065; megalomaniac business men hold the mining rights to vast outlets on the Asteroid belt. The world’s resources are crumbling as these corrupt men hold the Earth to ransom. Police are faced with a spate of vicious murders and abductions. Young women are discovered with snakes draped over their bodies, a stone relic carved with a mysterious star system, left at their side. A cryptic message points to a sinister cult. To his horror, Ben experiences phobic attacks along with rage, human emotions alien to him. Desperate he turns to American psychologist, Dr Lucy Roberts, a psychologist/psycho neurologist and a rebel. Forced to reveal what and who he is, Ben has to trust she will not expose him. Lucy agrees to help only to be drawn into a relationship fraught with danger. Can she help Ben to experience love? Archaeologists advise the Stone Relics date back 2.5 million years, before the first Homo Erectus. Who carved the star system? How are these early Earth inhabitants linked to the cult?

Excerpt from Stone Relics by Katy Walters:

Death grinned as Ben opened the tent flap to snakes decaying over the tender young body. An angel, her beauty devoured by evil, but not her essence, a seraphic core that withstood evil even in death. His legs trembled slightly, as he knelt to her, angels do die – angels with violet eyes. He bit down on his lower lip, tasting blood and salt from the sea, his face now only centimeters away from the decaying reptiles.  Phobic fear pounded his body like an iron fist, punching away his breath. God, the tranx weren’t holding. ‘Get on it with it man’ he muttered, ‘get on with it.’ Wiping the perspiration from his forehead, Ben glanced at the closed flap of the tent; at least no one could see him shaking. His hand hovered over her black curls flowing through the dark green fronds of seaweed, his fingers brushing away the petals of a sea anemone suckling on the pallid skin of her chest. He shivered at her mouth a purple shriek of dried blood, felt his muscles tighten at the puncture-like wounds spread across her exquisite face, naked breasts, belly and legs. Someone had loved this girl – held her in his arms. He focused on the row of neat stitches across her flat stomach. His breath felt like ice on his tongue, his body paralyzed almost, as he glimpsed a shadow rising from the sand, a darkness hovering. So, this is what evil felt like. He glanced over his shoulder, there was nothing; just the watery light glowing through the tent walls. He smelt the fetid odor of death – nothing – no demons gibbering. Detective Mistral Dunwood, known by all as Misty, paced outside the tent, eyes squinting in the morning light. As the Scene of Crime Officers trudged towards her, she called out, ‘Chief, SOCO are here, shall I bring them in?’ Ben felt his muscles loosening, his breath easier, his time with the snakes nearly over. He shouted, ‘No, I need to process the body first, keep everyone away until I call.’ As he placed the magnetic I.D. screen card to the victim’s pale wrist, her details embedded in her skin appeared. Melanie Wordsworth, Secretary to Dr. Naomi Pearson. Resides with Dr. Naomi Pearson. Apartment 8, 11 Marine Parade, Brighton, Area West Sussex, BSX 890. Date of birth, 21.10.2040. He whispered, ‘I’m here for you, angel, we’ll find the bastard, he’ll know your pain.’ A stone relic lay wedged under Melanie’s foot: the carved body of a woman, half-human half snake.

PRIME TIME AUTHOR,JANE WENHAM-JONES VISITS TODAY!!

WRITER MARKETING SERVICES AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS JANE WENHAM-JONES!!

Good morning, Jane and welcome to My Book Addiction and More and our readers today….

(from the author’s website)

MBA&M: Please introduce yourself to our readers, Jane?

JANE: Hi – good to meet you. I am a novelist, journalist and non-fiction writer. I’ve written four novels, two “how-to” books – Wannabe a Writer and Wannabe a Writer We’ve Heard Of? – and I am a regular columnist for both Writing Magazine and Woman’s Weekly Fiction Special here in the UK.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write romantic comedy?

JANE: I am incapable of being serious about anything for very long. Humour is my way of dealing with my traumas.

MBA&M: How did the characters of “Prime Time” appear in your thoughts?

JANE: I do both see and hear them. The character of Charlotte was inspired by a very good friend of mine. The heroine, Laura, is based on me when I had savage PMT!

MBA&M: What were some of the challenges in writing “Prime Time”?

JANE: Not over-doing the PMT! I had a hysterectomy between writing the first draft and editing it. I had to stop myself toning down or deleting certain bits, because I’d already forgotten how wound up one could feel. But yes, one DOES want to take a blunt instrument to one’s ex-husband…

MBA&M: Jane, tell our readers what some of your writing habits are?

JANE: I drink gallons of green tea with lemon, I get very easily distracted – every time that emailer bleeps I’m off like a long dog – and I obsessively check my word count. (And my Amazon ratings)

MBA&M: How hard was it to get a romantic comedy published?

JANE: Hard! I finished by first novel in October 1998 and spent the whole of 1999 failing to find an agent. I eventually sold it direct to a publisher in August 2000. I tell the full story of how deranged I became in the process in Wannabe a Writer? I cannot believe some of the things I did now…

MBA&M: What are some of your writing habits?

JANE: See above

MBA&M: What are some of your favorite books, passions, hobbies, movies, etc?

JANE: I love all sorts of books but long-term favourites include Marge Piercy, Marilyn French, Fay Weldon, Graham Greene, Joanna Trollope, Minette Walters, Stephen King (The Stand! Yay!) and Martina Cole. Oh I could go on and on…

Wish I saw more movies cos I do adore them – looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep do Margaret Thatcher. Was very struck by Never Let Me Go, which made me cry and also I’ve Loved You So Long with Kristin Scott Thomas who I think is brilliant. Also really like going to the theatre – saw her in Harold Pinter’s Betrayal in London last year. Am in a play myself shortly – playing Anne Shankland in Terrence Rattigan’s Separate Tables – currently trying to learn my lines….

*****

A British romantic comedy by Jane Wenham-Jones, author of ‘Perfect Alibis’

Laura Meredith never imagined herself appearing on TV– she’s too old, too flabby, too downright hormonal, and much too busy holding things together for her son, Stanley, after husband, Daniel, left her for a younger, thinner replacement.

But best friend Charlotte is a determined woman and when Laura is persuaded on to a daytime show to talk about her PMT, everything changes. Suddenly there’s a camera crew tracking her every move and Laura finds herself an unlikely star. Wined, dined, and pampered, she begins to see the charms of a younger partner herself. But as things hot up between her and gorgeous TV director, Cal, they’re going downhill elsewhere. While Laura’s caught up in a heady whirlwind of beauty treatments, makeovers and glamorous film locations, Charlotte’s husband, Roger, is concealing a guilty secret, Stanley’s got problems at school, work’s piling up, and when Laura turns detective to protect Charlotte’s marriage, things go horribly wrong.

The champagne’s flowing as Laura’s prime time TV debut looks set to be a hit. But in every month, there’s a Day Ten …

LEGACY OF EDEN BY NELLE DAVY’S BLOG TOUR AND SCAVENGER HUNT….

IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO WELCOME TO MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE,AUTHOR, NELLE DAVY  TODAY!!

MEET NELLE DAVY!!

Nelle Davy was born in Grenada in 1984 and was raised in London within an Anglo-Caribbean family. She studied English with creative writing at the University of Warwick and then undertook a master of philosophy degree in creative writing at Trinity College Dublin. She currently lives in London with her husband, where she works in publishing. THE LEGACY OF EDEN is her first novel and she is currently working on her second.

MBA&M: Can you tell us something about yourself that not a lot of your readers know?

NELLE: I could probably be a make up artist or a baker. I am the kind of person in either shop where people actively come up to me and ask my advice on products. I once took this woman around Superdrug (a beauty shop in the UK) testing liquid eyeliners on her. The staff were not amused but she got the right one for her I can tell you.

MBA&M: Do you have any quirks that come out while you are writing?

NELLE: I argue with myselfmy husband actually laughs at me because I look like a mad woman having conversations with myself about what this character did or should do.or should not.

MBA&M: What is your daily routine as a writer?

NELLE: I don’t have oneit’s very fly by the seat of your pants but  I tell you I love to write at night. There is something about the darkness that makes me feel much freer.

MBA&M: What is your favorite book?

NELLE: Could not even begin to answer that one it would be like choosing a favourite child: Matilda, Rebecca, Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, The Secret History, I Capture the Castle, Therese Raquin.endless endless lists.

MBA&M: What is your favorite part of the writing process?

NELLE: When you finish a segment and realize you wrote a sentence that is yours – your voice captured in those words and no one else could write what you just did. It makes you feel as if you are coming into your own, instead of a lesser follower of greater authors.

An epic, sweeping tale of a dynasty rotten to the core, driven by ambition, lust – and hatred.

For generations, Aurelia was the crowning glory of more than three thousand acres of Iowa farmland and golden cornfields. The estate was a monument to matriarch Lavinia Hathaway’s dream to elevate the family name—no matter what relative or stranger she had to destroy in the process. It was a desperation that wrought the downfall of the Hathaways—and the once-prosperous farm.

Now the last inhabitant of the decaying old home has died—alone. None of the surviving members of the Hathaway family want anything to do with the farm, the land or the memories.

Especially Meredith Pincetti. Now living in New York City, for seventeen years Lavinia’s youngest grandchild has tried to forget everything about her family and her past. But with the receipt of a pleading letter, Meredith is again thrust into conflict with the legacy that destroyed her family’s -great name.

Back at Aurelia, Meredith must confront the rise and fall of the Hathaway family…and her own part in their mottled history.

EXCERPT FROM “THE LEGACY OF EDEN” BY NELLE DAVY (provided by the publicist)

“It’ll end in tears,” they said, and secretly hoped.
In little over a year, my grandmother decided that her initial vision was completed enough to her satisfaction and she threw a party. My grandfather, Cal Sr., was relieved—he saw it as a peace offering. She let him believe that.
How can it be so easy for her? I thought, as I sat in my studio, my conversation with Ava repeating in a continuous loop through my head. She who, unlike me, spent years forcing herself to remember when I was struggling to forget. The light was beginning to die outside, eager lamps from the streets sharpening against the encroaching dark. I sat in the corner of my room, surrounded by the half-formed clay models, whose shadows threw deformed specters on the walls behind them. I could tell as we spoke that unlike me she did not see an arched sign hung between two columns of oak with the farm’s name written on it in curlicue black lettering or the gravel paths that wound through sculptured green lawns on which were planted pockets of flowers.

GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH AUTHOR TARAH SCOTT,”LABYRINTH”…

MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS “Classical romance…for the 21st Century” AUTHOR TARAH SCOTT TODAY!!

Good morning,Tarah and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today….

TARAH: Thanks so much for having me, Tha! I’m pleased a punch to be here today.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few tidbits about Tarah Scott?

TARAH: I grew up in the Southwest,Texas primarily, and moved to New Yorkf ifteen years ago. I have a teenage daughter, so there’s a possibility I won’t live through the next five years. (She’s starting to give me a run for my money.) We live in a small home an hour north of NYC. I love the Northeast—but am coming to hate the snow! That’s what happens when you get old.

MBA&M: Can you tell our readers what some of the challenges are in writing an erotic historical time travel romance?

TARAH: Everything! One big challenge was making sure that the speech of the characters was different enough for readers to be aware of the time difference between the modern and historical characters without throwing readers out of the story. This element also came into play in keeping a unique voice between my American born heroine and her British love interest. What made the challenge even greater was that the historical character is Scottish, so this gave me three distinct speech patterns I had to be careful to maintain.

The other big challenge was my heroine’s reaction to her time traveling experiences. Labyrinth is more fantasy than paranormal, as we have magic instead of vampires and ghosts. The time traveling elements in Labyrinth are a result of enchantments and voodoo. Heh heh. More of the old meets new. In Labyrinth, Margot comes face to with this magic, something she’d never believed in, despite having grown up with backwater Southern voodoo. I worked very hard to keep her reactions realistic, yet bring her to the understanding that there are things one just can’t explain.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write “Labyrinth,” if anything?

TARAH: I had Labyrinth on my mental drawing board for a couple of years before I started writing. I knew it would be a huge challenge (the very reason for my wanting to write the book,) yet I had sense enough to be afraid. HA!! I wanted to write something of a modern fairy tale. Fairy tales are the original Fantasy genre and delve with the darker more base elements of the human psyche.

Fairy tales like Cinderella and Snow White come with a charming prince who saves the princess with a kiss. I wondered what would happen if we switched that and had the princess save the prince. Of course, we can’t forget the kiss, but in today’s modern world, a kiss is a sweet gesture, and since fairy tales dig into our darker side, I couldn’t settle for anything quite so chaste. So I went much further in that my heroine can only save the hero by giving him her body. The rub is, he murders his lovers when they can’t free him from his spell. That won’t do for our heroine, Mississippi Deputy Sheriff Margot Saulnier.

As you can see, there are some twists and turns that lead Margot down a very dangerous path where nothing is as it seems.

MBA&M: Who do you believe is your greatest supporter and why?

TARAH: I have a couple of great supporters. My critique partners, Evan Trevane and Kimberly Comeau. We’ve been together for over ten years now and are devoted to one another. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have them in my life.

My daughter is also a great supporter. She loves writing (maybe as much as I do,) so she shares in my highs and lows with a compassion that touches me. I guess teenagers aren’t ALL bad. Heh heh.

MBA&M: If you had to pick a hero, be it character, person, or animal who or what would it be and why?

TARAH: Wow! That’s a toughie. There are so many choices. If I’m to choose from a real life character, I’m struck with Martin Luther King Jr. He said something that I often remember; “I have a dream.” No one can aspire to change the world on anything less than a dream. No one can aspire to change their own lives without a dream. Sounds corny, I know, but I believe the philosophy applies to every aspect of life, and given that I’m a dreamer by nature…well, you get the idea.

MBA&M: In your latest story “Labyrinth”, the present collides with the past and a legend is born, how did you come up with this concept?

TARAH: This answer goes back to why I decided to write Labyrinth. Enchantments of all kinds fill fairy tales. I just couldn’t consider writing a fairy tale without one, which led me to combining the enchanted characters with modern characters here in this modern time. That meant I had to bring someone to life. And what better to bring to life than a legend?

MBA&M: What is the weirdest piece of writing advice you got that actually worked for you?

TARAH: My mentor and critique partner Kim Comeau often writes the different threads of her novels separately. While I knew this worked very well for her, I found the idea completely foreign. I simply couldn’t imagine maintaining the momentum and connection between the characters with that method of writing. I couldn’t have been more wrong. (That’s why she’s the teacher and I’m the student. Heh heh.)

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where “Labyrinth” is available?

TARAH: Labyrinth is currently available at Amazon. For readers who might have a prime membership, Labyrinth is available as a free read for them. Anyone who doesn’t own a Kindle (believe it or not, I don’t!) you can still read Labyrinth on Kindle for PC or Mac, or your Kindle Cloud. No one misses out.

DEBUT AUTHOR VISIT !!!!PHIL BOLOS,” FIEND:THE MANIFESTATION”….

IT IS WITH HONOR MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS DEBUT AUTHOR OF “FIEND-THE MANIFESTATION”:

“PHIL BOLOS TODAY”

If you took a look at my nightstand, you would probably think that some seriously demented dude has been using it to stash all his personal belongings. Below a lamp sits a strange variety of items: a zombie novel, a Joker bobble-head, a Yoda figurine, printed out chapters of a novel that have been marked red with corrections, and a notebook filled with a combination of doodles, ideas, and characters. Even as I look at it, I can’t help but think to myself, “How the hell did I get all that stuff?” It’s no mystery really. Some of the items are things that I grew up with, characters that inspired me when I was young. The others are stories and ideas that have come from others that peek my interest and make me think. The rest have come out of my own mind and will, hopefully, inspire others in due time.

In December of 2010, I released my first horror novel, Fiend: The Manifestation, as an eBook. This took some of my friends and family by storm. One friend said to me over a cold beer, “Phil, you’re a history major with a Masters degree in English Second Language. Why are you writing scary books? Shouldn’t you be writing historical stuff?” My answer was simple. No, I shouldn’t. I tried my hand at writing historical documents in my undergraduate years, and I have to say my hat is off to anyone brave enough to tackle that field. No, writing history was not for me. It just wasn’t fun enough. What is fun is taking reality and adding something that shouldn’t be there. Adding something that makes your skin crawl and keeps you up at night. That was why I first got into writing short horror and paranormal stories. It was fun. Early on though, I figured out that if I was going to learn how to write this genre, I needed to dive into it and read as much as I could. A lot of what I came across was good, some of it was terrible. But one nagging truth stood out to me: most of it was stale. As I read different authors and touched on different subcategories, I found that I kept reading the same story. Sure, they had different titles and different authors, but the storyline and themes were so similar at times I couldn’t tell them apart. That was where Fiend: The Manifestation came into play. I decided I needed to try and come up with something that no one in horror had come across before. So, I set off to create a short story that was unlike any written before. Three years and over 130,000 words later, the short story had become the first two installments of a trilogy with The Manifestation being the first. I didn’t plan it that way, but I think that makes the story special. It literally has taken on a life of its own and has grown faster than I would have ever believed.

As he finished reading the manuscript for The Manifestation, my Dad asked me, “Did you make all this up or is any of it real?” Most of the novel is 100% fictional, but there are parts that are rooted in truth. The setting of the story, a town in Wisconsin, is based on an actual town called Minoqua. The historical basis of the evil entity is based on actual facts from European history, although fictional parts have been added for effect. And the characters in the story, although fictional in their own right, are all based on people I know and spend time with. It was fun to have those people come to me and say, “So…this guy Thomas in the story…is he kinda like me?” Why yes he is, buddy, and thanks for noticing!

I don’t know if The Manifestation is going to be a success or not. But, what I can say is that it has been the most fun I have had in a long time. Creating my own version of good and evil has given me insight into my own mind like I have never had before. Drawing on inspiration from my past and the people and events around me has given me a unique opportunity to come up with an idea that is truly one of a kind. But, like I said, I don’t know if it is a homerun yet. That is where the readers come in. So, interested in finding out how good it is? Want to see if I am telling the truth or just running my mouth? Check it out and let me know your thoughts. I dare you…

GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH ROSSLYN ELLIOTT,”SWEETER THAN BIRDSONG”…

MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS, ROSSLYN ELLIOTT TODAY!!!

PRESENTING INSPRIATIONAL HISTORICAL ROMANCE AUTHOR ROSSLYN ELLIOTT….

Good morning Rosslyn, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More today…

It’s great to be here, thank you!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few tidbits about Rosslyn Elliott?

ROSSLYN: Let’s see, good tidbits…my daughter and I are horse-lovers, and so we spend a lot of time each week around horses. It’s good exercise for both of us as I help out around the stable and she does equestrian vaulting. I also love working with music in children’s ministry. All three of us (my daughter, husband, and I) live in the southwesternUSA, but we have a major relocation coming up to move back closer to family in the southeast. In more ancient history, I have a BA fromYaleUniversityand a graduate degree in English fromEmoryUniversity. All that study of literature eventually led me back to my earliest passion: creative writing.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write about the Underground Railroad?

ROSSLYN: The Underground Railroad, a secret network for conducting escaping slaves to the North or Canada, was a very unusual aspect of American culture before the Civil War. Otherwise law-abiding Christian citizens would break the law of the time in order to serve what they felt was a higher obligation to free human souls. The reason I chose to write about it was entirely related to the Hanby family ofWesterville,Ohio. When I went to visit a small museum there that had once been the Hanbys’ home, I discovered an amazing story of love, faith and courage that had never been told in fictional form. And part of what attracted me to that story was the Hanbys’ involvement in the Underground Railroad, and the fact that they were willing to risk their safety and comfort for higher principles.

MBA&M: How much research went into writing “Sweeter Than Birdsong”?

ROSSLYN: All of my novels have required quite a bit of research because I believe in immersing the reader in the texture of the historical time. I don’t think we can really walk in a character’s shoes unless we can see the buildings, see the tools, see the dishes and the lighting and the fireplaces, smell the odors around us, see the trees or the snow. And so, in order to bring those scenes to life, I have to do a lot of research into how things looked during that particular time period, what foods were common, and how the people of a certain social class lived. My research about the Hanby family was based primarily on two works by amateur historians, and some archival research in theWestervillepublic library.

MBA&M: What where some of the challenges in writing “Sweeter Than Birdsong”?

ROSSLYN: Sweeter than Birdsong was the first novel I ever wrote, but in its earliest form, it looked nothing like it does now. Because I grew so much as a writer over the years, I had to go back and rewrite the novel twice, both major rewrites, in order to get it up to the standard of my later work. It was a long haul, but I’m really happy with it now and grateful to my editors for their wise suggestions that helped me get the third draft in good shape.

MBA&M: The 19th century, was a difficult time for women, full of inspiration and heroes. Who would you say would be your hero of this century and why?

ROSSLYN: Wow, that is a good question. It’s hard not to immediately think of Abraham Lincoln, if heroes include men as well as women. But for women, I would choose Harriet Beecher Stowe, because she had such powerful convictions and worked hard to change the world in whatever way she could. In fact, the titles of the books in my series are taken from her hymn lyrics, “Still, still with thee.”

MBA&M: Share with our readers what the Underground Railroad did, who founded it and where some of the stops were, if you can?

ROSSLYN: The most important thing to know is that the Underground Railroad did not involve trains. LOL! I know most people know that, but the name is so misleading that over the years, I’ve had a few people ask me about trains on the Underground Railroad. The reason the Underground Railroad got its name was that a fugitive slave ran across the Ohio River and his irate pursuers said that he had vanished so suddenly “he must have been taken away by an underground railroad.” We can’t point to a specific founder, and even tracing the history is hard because by its nature it had to be so secretive. Harriet Tubman is known for her work with it, of course. Both black and white Americans participated in the Railroad and used all kinds of tricks to help fugitives escape. Some houses had secret chambers. Sometimes fugitive men would dress as women so they could be veiled and pass unnoticed over the roads. Henry ‘Box’ Brown survived being mailed to the North in a large crate. The stops on the Railroad included any house that was a safe haven. Sometimes fugitives would travel by foot, other times by wagon or coach.

MBA&M: What would be your favorite stop on the Underground Railway to visit?

ROSSLYN: Oh, this is easy. Hanby House! The home of the Hanby family still stands in Westerville, Ohio, where it’s open for tours. I feel almost a sense of reverence when I go in there, because writing novels inspired by real people is a serious responsibility. I also feel as if the Hanbys are long-lost friends or distant relatives, because I’ve spent so much time studying them and writing about them. But if I could go to a house that was a stop where I’ve never been, I would go to John Parker’s house in Ripley, Ohio. He was a real African-American hero who was tough as nails and conducted many people to freedom on the Railroad. His character in Sweeter than Birdsong was one of the most interesting parts to write.

MBA&M: Rosslyn, please tell our readers where you can be found and where “Sweeter Than Birdsong” is available?

ROSSLYN: Sweeter than Birdsong is now available at most major book retailers. You can go straight to www.RosslynElliott.com to connect. If your local bookstore doesn’t have it, they can order it for you easily. It’s also available in electronic versions for e-readers.

I love to have readers stop by my hangouts on the internet. Come visit my website and blog at www.RosslynElliott.com. GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH “THE EGYPTIAN” AUTHOR, LAYTON GREEN…

MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS LAYTON GREEN…..

Good morning, Layton, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More and our readers today…

MBA&M: Tell our readers a little about Layton Green, the author?

LAYTON: I attended law school in New Orleans and was a practicing attorney for the better part of a decade (even though I still resent having cut my hair for that first interview).  I have also been an intern for the United Nations, an ESL teacher in Central America, a bartender in London, a seller of cheap knives on the streets of Brixton, a door to door phone book deliverer, and the list goes downhill from there.

I have traveled to more than fifty countries, lived in a number of them, and have a burning desire to see every country, city, beach, moor, castle, cemetery, twisted street and far flung dot on the map.  The world’s religions, as well as all things spiritual and supernatural, have also been a lifelong interest.

MBA&M:  What made you decide to write a suspense/thriller?

LAYTON: Though I read about anything, I have always had a keen interest in suspense novels, and find that I love writing them as well.

MBA&M: What where some of the challenges in writing “The Egyptian”?

LAYTON: The biggest challenge (thought it was fun an interesting) was delving into the science of biomedical gerontology.  I wanted to see for myself how science was coming along in the search for eternal life, and I read some fascinating books and journals on the subject.  But assimilating that and putting it into digestible form in a thriller was tough.

MBA&M: What are some of your writing perks?

LAYTON: Great coffee, no dress code, no billable hours, and fantastic travel.

MBA&M: What is something you hope your readers will learn by reading “The Egyptian”?

LAYTON: I hope readers learn a little bit about themselves as they ponder some of the questions presented in the novel, particularly concerning the search for eternal life.

MBA&M: If you could go to a different era/time/or place where would it be and why?

LAYTON: Interesting question.  Maybe Paris in the 20s, ala Woody Allen!  Or maybe Prague a few hundred years ago.

MBA&M: What are the top 3 reads that you feel influenced your writing style in writing suspense/thriller?

LAYTON: I’m not sure about my top three, but here are three authors that come to mind: Martin Cruz Smith, Michael Gruber, James Lee Burke.

MBA&M: Now, Layton, please tell our readers where to find you and where “The Egyptian” is available?

LAYTON: You can find me at www.laytongreen.com, on Facebook, and at  http://www.amazon.com/Layton-Green/e/B004FZX2NI/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1
