Changing the Rules by Catherine Bybee….an excerpt and Giveaway!

Excerpt from Changing the Rules by Catherine Bybee

Claire collapsed onto the living room sofa the second she walked in the door. Not only had she suffered a headache the entire day, Cooper ran her like a trainer working an Iron Man competitor.

“That sounds like a bad day,” Jax said as she walked around the corner of the kitchen.

“You don’t want to know.”

Claire flung an arm over her eyes to block out the sun.

She heard Jax walk in the room and then exhale as she sat down. “You’re right. I don’t give a crap what happened in school, unless it involved Cooper. What I want is the details of last night after I got out of the car.”

Before Cooper picked them up, Claire and Jax had agreed that Jax would give them a few minutes to have a private conversation. Now Claire regretted that plan.

“The long story, or the short story?” Claire asked.

“Whatever one you want to deliver.”

Claire’s arms slid off her head, and she pushed herself into a sitting position.

“Cooper has a thing for me.”

Jax sat silent, blinked a few times. “Okay, and?”

“What do you mean, ‘okay, and?’”

“Sorry, Claire, but that’s obvious. I think you’d have to be an idiot to not see it. Even the guys on the team see it.”

“What? Are they talking about—”

Jax stopped her with a shake of the head. “Of course not. But you can tell by how they look at the two of you that they know there’s an attraction.”

Claire pointed to her chest. “I’m not doing anything, it’s him.”

“Maybe it’s more him.”

She kept shaking her head. “No, it’s all him. I’m not instigating anything.”

“You flirt with him all the time.”

“I do not,” Claire huffed.

One look from Jax and she rescinded her statement. “Okay, we banter. But it’s always been like that. I have the pool stick, he makes some kind of phallic joke. It’s banter. Not flirting.”

Jax sat back, crossed her arms over her chest. Claire couldn’t believe her best friend was calling her out. “We’re friends. And last night he ruined that by telling me he’s had a thing for me since we met. Told me he left sunny California for dreary London because I was too young and naive to handle him when I first got here.”

Jax narrowed her eyes. “Is that really how he said that?”

Claire’s headache was coming back. “No. He said I was a child.”

“A child?”

Claire stood up from the couch, started for the kitchen. “He kept repeating that I was eighteen back then.”

Jax followed behind. “Which is true.”

Claire yanked open the fridge, pulled out a beer. “Whose side are you on?”

“Yours. Always. But I just don’t see where all the fire is about this. Cooper owns up to the flirting comments and puppy-dog looks he gives you, and you’re pissed because he walked away six years ago.”

Like picking a lock, the pieces slid into place and finally started to click. “But he’s my friend.”

“Trying to say you’ve never thought of him as more?”

“No.” Her denial was quick.

Jax started to smile. “You’ve never checked out his ass? The guy can fill out a pair of jeans.”

Some of the anger she’d harbored all day eased. “That’s true.”

“And that smile. When he’s belly laughing he has the tiniest dimples.”

Claire closed her eyes, pictured his smile. She hadn’t noticed the dimples, but now that she thought about it . . . She opened her eyes to find Jax staring at her.

“Sounds like you have a thing for him,” Claire said.

“Wouldn’t matter if I did, and I don’t, by the way, but it wouldn’t matter. The guy can’t stop looking at you.”

“God, what am I going to do with him?”

“I don’t think you have to do anything. It’s not like he asked you out and you said no and now it’s awkward.”

“You’re right. It’s worse than that.”

“You’re overthinking it.” Jax pushed off the counter. “You know what, let’s gussy up a little and hit a proper happy hour. We’ll talk in German and pretend we don’t speak English and shamelessly flirt.”

Claire abandoned her beer. “Now that is exactly what I need to do and get my mind off of boys.”

Santa in a Snow Globe by A. H. Edelman….a review

Santa in a Snow Globe by A.H. Edelman

How can parents and caregivers explain to the children in their life that, even though some things will be different this year, Christmas magic remains the same?

That’s easy! Let Santa do it!

“Santa in a Snow Globe” is the origin story of how and why St. Nick will be found sitting “in a place that it clear and quite round” when families come to share their wish lists with him this holiday season.

Relayed straightforwardly by Santa to author AH Edelman and illustrated with inclusiveness by Serge Gall–whose work has appeared in publications including The New York Times, Esquire, and The New Yorker–Santa in a Snow Globe offers a starting point for grownups to talk about life’s new realities–including climate change, the Coronavirus and Black Lives Matter protests–with their kids.

So curl up with your kids while Santa shares his recent observations about the world and offers some timeless advice that includes some hard truths but concludes with a big dose of Christmas cheer.

My Thoughts:
If you are wondering how to explain that you may not be able to sit in Santa’s lap this year, then you may want to pick up this book. The story is well written. It had me rhyming after reading it. LOL The illustrations are fun and engaging. The story is a little bit funny but mostly it’s a way to open up that conversion and to explain things may be different but they are also still the same. It’s a cute book for those who want to share Santa and also how Christmas may be different this year. I swear the rhyming in the book has me rhyming in my head now. LOL It’s a cute read and is quick. The images are well done and bright. It’s very much a 2020 Christmas read.

Home for the Holidays by Sara Richardson: Review

Home for the Holidays by Sara Richardson

*Blurb from Goodreads*

The Buchanan sisters all share special childhood memories of their Aunt Sassy’s beloved Juniper Inn. There, they frolicked in the snow, baked sugar cookies, and celebrated the town’s annual Christmas extravaganza. They haven’t been back to Colorado in nearly fifteen years, but when their aunt invites them for one last Christmas, they can’t say no . . .

With her ex-husband whisking her children away for the holiday, Dahlia decides it’s time to do something for herself. Juniper Springs is just as beautiful as she remembers, but it’s also full of surprises — including the town’s handsome doctor, who makes her feel like herself again for the first time in years.

To the outside world, baker Magnolia has the ideal marriage. Only the pain and sorrow of infertility have strained her relationship with her husband, perhaps beyond repair. But a holiday miracle is about to change her life.

After a whirlwind romance, youngest sister Rose is about to be married, but as the wedding draws near, she’s unsettled by her fiancé’s expectations that she become a society wife. Spending Christmas with her family could be a necessary reality check — or the beginning of a brand-new happily ever after.

Thanks to the strength of their sisterhood, some mistletoe, and the love of their Aunt Sassy, the Buchanan sisters will discover what it is they truly want this Christmas.

My Thoughts

Fans of the Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies will love this story. The story is well written and does keep you entertained. The characters are realistic to a point if a little “dreamy”. It very much reads like a Hallmark feel good Christmas movie. I did enjoy it. But I enjoy those movies. I want a happily Ever after. Or at least to know good things are coming. So this book felt good to me. The author does a good job of allowing you to follow the 3 sisters and their struggles. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a feel good holiday centered story.

Meet New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ryan’s McGraths: a family as untamed as the land they call home.

Tate McGrath just didn’t get it. Why was Liz Scott, his best friend—and the person he relied on and trusted most—suddenly avoiding him! When he finally tracks her down, he finds her with a man he knows nothing about and she’s been dating for weeks. Suddenly, he can’t make himself ignore her tempting curves and deep green eyes, and all he wants to do is keep her all to himself. What was going on? Could he possibly be…jealous?

Liz had made the decision: stop carrying a torch for Tate and find a guy who wants to be her everything. Tate had always seen her as honest, dependable, smart, kind…Best friend, not girlfriend! And she needed to give up the dream of marrying the man she’d loved since preschool and move on.

But when Liz’s boyfriend turns dangerous, Tate steps up to help and soon realizes he’s the cowboy hero she’s been waiting for him to be all along.

My thoughts:

WAITING ON A COWBOY is a fun easy read. The characters are well written and realistic. The setting in one that leaves you wanting to visit in real life. The story is a friends to not friends to lovers type of story. Liz and Tate are great characters. Liz knows what she wants but it finally ready to move on since she can't have that. Tate, her best friend, is finally ready to risk it all even losing his best friend. But is it too late? That question is probably the biggest theme to me of the story. When is it too late? When do you finally move on? I felt for Liz and her struggles and for Tate and his concerns. Watching these two find their way and dealing with the dangers now facing Liz.....well it was fun. It was a page-turning can't put down read. You want to know what comes next but at the same time you don't want the story to end. I am eager to connect with these characters again. I highly recommend WAITING ON A COWBOY to anyone who enjoys small town romances, cowboys, friends to lovers stories, and stories that will leave you smiling. I can't wait to read whatever Jennifer Ryan releases next. This is part of a series,The McGraths, this is book one. However, it is connected to another series, Wild Rose Ranch, by way of characters from that series being in WAITING ON A COWBOY. You will want to read Wild Rose Ranch series but you don't have to read it. You aren't lost if you haven't read it. I will warn once you read Jennifer Ryan you'll add her to your auto-buy list and want to read everything she's written. Highly Recommended!!!

BAND OF SISTERS by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willing (William Morrow hardcover; on-sale March 2, 2021) COVER REVEAL!!!!!

BAND OF SISTERS by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willing (William Morrow hardcover; on-sale March 2, 2021)

PLOT SYNOPSIS

A group of young women from Smith College risk their lives in France at the height of World War I in this sweeping novel based on a true story—a skillful blend of Call the Midwife and The Alice Network—from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig.

A scholarship girl from Brooklyn, Kate Moran thought she found a place among Smith’s Mayflower descendants, only to have her illusions dashed the summer after graduation. When charismatic alumna Betsy Rutherford delivers a rousing speech at the Smith College Club in April of 1917, looking for volunteers to help French civilians decimated by the German war machine, Kate is too busy earning her living to even think of taking up the call. But when her former best friend Emmeline Van Alden reaches out and begs her to take the place of a girl who had to drop out, Kate reluctantly agrees to join the new Smith College Relief Unit.

Four months later, Kate and seventeen other Smithies, including two trailblazing female doctors, set sail for France. The volunteers are armed with money, supplies, and good intentions—all of which immediately go astray. The chateau that was to be their headquarters is a half-burnt ruin. The villagers they meet are in desperate straits: women and children huddling in damp cellars, their crops destroyed and their wells poisoned.

Despite constant shelling from the Germans, French bureaucracy, and the threat of being ousted by the British army, the Smith volunteers bring welcome aid—and hope—to the region. But can they survive their own differences? As they cope with the hardships and terrors of the war, Kate and her colleagues find themselves navigating old rivalries and new betrayals which threaten the very existence of the Unit.

With the Germans threatening to break through the lines, can the Smith Unit pull together and be truly a band of sisters?

My Thoughts:

A wonderful 20th anniversary edition! So first lets make that clear. This is a reissue of a previously released book. As the author notes she made very few changes.

Now for the story.
First thus us a medieval Scottish historical romance. The story is well written with characters you’ll love or love to hate. The villain I still wondered even though I read this one 20yrs ago, I still wondered if he could be redeemed. There are many secondary characters you will love and be eager to see again. The 2 main characters, Duncan and Linnet, are outstanding. Duncan has long been a favorite hero of mine. And young Robbie well, he’ll melt your heart. These are flawed, wounded characters, they are not perfect, they are human. They make mistakes. They learn. Linnet is a strong heroine who I have always at times wanted to shake yet I’ve always understood her actions. Duncan is an alpha hero who doesn’t believe he is redeemable. These two lost souls find a love neither expected. Fans of true medieval historical romances especially Scottish ones, not fluff historicals, but true historically based romance will enjoy Devil Ina Kilt. There is a sensualty to this story that is very well written. So this is not a sweet romance. There is violence, danger, romance, love, peace, sensualty and more. And I’m so happy to see this 20th anniversary edition available. Highly recommended.

Review: True Colors By Amy Knubb

Ohhh my….. What a great story. This is one of those reads that will leave you sighing yet eager to read the next book. The setting, in Nashville, Tennessee, will make you feel like you are there. But it’s the characters that truly draw you in. They are so realistic and believable that you’ll swear they are real. The story is one that will have you laughing, sighing, and at times telling the characters what to do lol. It’s a really well written engaging romance. The North Brothers are sigh worthy and the women they fall in love with aren’t weak they are strong women who make their men even better and best of all happy. I love a truly happy ending that leaves me smiling for days. This one is highly recommended!!!
