IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE WE AT MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE WELCOMES EROTIC HISTORICAL NOVELLA AUTHOR, VICTORIA VANE TODAY!!
MEET VICTORIA VANE …..
Thank you so very much, April, for inviting me to blog again with you at MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE.
This year been very exciting for me with releases in two different historical sub-genres, FORTUNE’S SON, a full length romantic historical novel written as Emery Lee, and A BREACH OF PROMISE, my first erotic historical novella written as Victoria Vane.
A BREACH OF PROMISE is a departure from my other work in both its light tone and high heat level. It has humor, witty dialogue, colorful characters, a strong if uncomplicated plot, and high sensuality i.e. hot sex and plenty of it. Given that my other work is pretty much PG-13, I thought I would take this opportunity to explain how my “sex-writing evil twin” Victoria came about.
I’ll begin with the confession that I’m highly energetic, extremely impatient, and easily bored (strung like a violin on the best of days). The slow process of writing and publishing books is truly excruciating for someone like me and having to wait weeks or months to hear back from agents and editors on books proposals is akin to Chinese water torture.
Having said this, about nine months ago while experiencing one of these wonderful lulls, my sympathetic agent suggested I fill the waiting gap by writing something short. Me, write something short? (It might be relevant to note that my first novel began as a mammoth 189K words compared to the average romance at 80-90K words.) I immediately wondered if I could even do it. But given the recent popularity of e-novellas, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try. Since my longer novels feature complicated plots and a number of secondary characters, I realized writing a novella would present all new challenges. Yet, never having balked from a challenge, I decided to give it a go.
My first draft of ABOP was a 15K word novella that I thought would be “perfect” for Harlequins’ UNDONE line of short and sexy historical romances. Unfortunately, after waiting three months for a response I learned that Harlequin didn’t agree! By then, however, I had submitted the story to several other publishers certain that one of them would snatch it up. Wrong again. I got several more rejections. Deciding then to write it off as a “failed experiment,” you can imagine my surprise (shock actually) when I received an email from an editor at ELLORA’S CAVE expressing interest in the manuscript I had submitted under their BLUSH (non-erotic) line.
It was an acceptance conditional on my willingness to further develop the romantic relationship of the story. Make it longer? (Big smile.) Sure! I can do that! The second condition was to amp up the heat level to suit their erotic historical (LEGEND) line. (Gulp!) Having never written explicit sex, the idea was daunting, but here was a golden opportunity to stretch myself as a writer. I accepted the contract with the promise to deliver a hot historical romance that readers would love. Easy, right? NOT!!!
After working tirelessly for weeks on the story, I happily submitted my revision only to receive 8 pages of notes back from my editor! I was crushed. Where did I go wrong? What was lacking?
While I had adopted the more graphic language used in erotic romance and had the “mechanics” in abundance, my editor described the weakness in the manuscript as lacking the “sixth sense,” better explained as the empathy or emotional connection the reader must feel, particularly during key moments of intimacy. In any great love scene, the reader must feel the emotion not just visualize the act.
Bringing genuine emotion into a story is one of the most difficult undertakings of any writer, but to integrate this into sex scenes is exponentially harder. It is a true gift when done well. Wanting very much to do it well, I set out to find authors who meld strong emotion into explicit love scenes, authors I wished to emulate. I read a number of beautifully crafted highly sensual stories by Robin Schone, Lila DiPasqua, Charlotte Featherstone, and Sylvia Day. Inspired by these wonderful authors and with a new shift in mindset, I re-wrote all of my love scenes. I can only hope my efforts have succeeded and readers will experience true passion through Marcus and Lydia in A BREACH OF PROMISE.
SYNOPSIS: A BREACH OF PROMISE by Victoria Vane :
On the night of her betrothal, Lydia Albinia Trent receives just a taste of what ecstasy will be at the hands of her fiancé…and then he leaves her wanting for six years during their prolonged engagement. Tired of being neglected by her exceedingly reluctant husband-to-be, Lydia decides to break it off.
When Marcus, Lord Russell, receives Lydia’s letter requesting a release from their contract, he is stunned by her audacity and cannot do without her dowry. Confident he’ll have her eating out of his hand with his usual wit and charm, he invites his betrothed to London to repair the damage. However, the headstrong woman she’s blossomed into is determined to thwart his every effort to win her over.
In spite of her conviction to end the union, Lydia is more responsive to Marcus’ touch than he imagined. He just needs to get her alone to unleash the promised passion he sees within his wanton virgin. Marcus will use any tool in his arsenal to exploit her weakness—his kisses, his hands, his mouth…her own body. In short, he’ll just have to ruin her!
