Book Two in the Valley of Choice Series by Olivia Newport

in plain view

Olivia, welcome to My Book Addiction and More.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers who may not know you a few tidbits about Olivia Newport.

My happy place is my hammock hanging on my patio, and summer is almost here! It’s a great place to enjoy the richness of my life and dream about the stories I’d like to write.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write about the Amish community?

A serendipitous set of events led me to investigate my own ancestry, and I discovered that one of my mother’s family lines traced back to some of the earliest Amish settlers to arrive in Pennsylvania. Suddenly my curiosity level rose considerably. A cast of characters sprang up in my mind that let me write about my new understanding of the core values that form the Amish community.

MBA&M: If the reader has not read Book One in the “Valley of Choice” series, do you recommend they read Accidentally Amish first, or can In Plain View be read as a stand alone?

As I wrote In Plain View, I kept in mind new readers. The setting and cast of characters spans both books, but I was careful to fill in enough of the background that new readers would not feel lost. A reader who likes to be immersed in a series might enjoy reading Accidentally Amish first, but each book can stand alone as well.

MBA&M: In In Plain View, Annie Freisen struggles with her newfound faith, her life in the Amish community, suspicion, and many other things. Do you feel this is true to so many of our lives today, with the internet, faster cars, the social networking and suspicion all around us?

Life is complicated. From the outside, we might look in at the Amish and think they live the simple life and imagine that it might be nice to get away from all the things you named. Annie’s struggles tell us that life everywhere is complicated. Emotions, relationships, unexpected events—these are common to the human experience. How will we respond to these challenges? That is the question that helps us understand what we value.

MBA&M: If you where to recommend one book you have read in the past, which book, the author, and why?

I’ve read so many great books over the years! The one that comes to mind at this moment, as I think about the “Valley of Choice” series, is The Summer of the Great-Grandmother, by Madeleine L’Engle. It is non-fiction. As she remembers her final summer with her own mother, the author touches on generational themes and relationships that help us all reflect on where we come from.

MBA&M: Three words to describe In Plain View?

Explosive, tender, wrenching.

MBA&M: How many books will be in this series, and what is next, if you can tell our readers?

This series will wrap up with Taken for English, which is due out in February 2014. We’ll find out what Annie and Rufus decide about their future, and whether Ruth and Elijah can find their way forward.
