VINSPIRE PUBLISHING  AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS….

YOUNG ADULT AUTHOR, NOLAN CARLSON!!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers something about Nolan Carlson?

NOLAN: I’m a guy who lives in a small Kansas town close to a university (Kansas State University).  I attended the university collecting several degrees over the years.  I finally received a Ph.D. in 1997.  I taught special education for 14 years and was a school counselor for ten years in the same school district.  I owned a restaurant in Manhattan, Kansas (the university town) for 16 years.  I also worked for Catholic Charities for 14 years.  My title was St. Marys Regional Counselor.  I counseled peple from 10 parishes.  I am now retired from the public school system but volunteer a lot of time at my wife’s place (Community Health Ministry) counseling, helping with commodities, winterizing elderly folks’ homes, doing meals on wheels, and other odd jobs when it is requested.  I also teach college classes three days a week.  My wife is a retired algebra teacher.  She taught 32 years and I taught 24 years.  I spent two years in the army.  I was lucky enough to grow up in the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas in a small town.  Growing up there inspired the Summer & Shiner series.  Shiner and Baseball is the 4th in the Summer & Shiner series. Growing up in that small town was much like living the lives of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.  It was wonderful! My wife and I have four grown children and five grandchildren.  I’ve always loved to read and write and took it up seriously many years ago.  I was lucky enough, as a starting writer, to get an agent from New York named Glenn Cowley.  That’s when it all began.  Over the years I have had several agents.  I have sold books to Berkeley Publishing and E.P. Dutton in New York.  Those books sold over 200,000 copies and were in all Walmarts and all book stores throughout the nation. They were also in the Troll Book Club.  When that ended I decided to write for middle school boys, particularly reluctant readers. I entered a state-wide authors’ contest and won first place with the first Summer & Shiner book. My books have been translated into German and sold abroad.  I have been favorably reviewed in Book List in Chicago. So far I’ve written 27 novels and sold 17.  My books have won many awards and are in the Accelerated Reading Program (five of them).  I am now with Vinspire Publishing.  I love being with this company because everyone is so supportive and talented.

MBA&M: How did “Shiner and Baseball” come to be?
NOLAN: It is the 4th book in a five book series. The main character, Carley, is myself “way bvack when”.  My brothers and I loved baseball as kids and knew the batting averages, baseball stats, etc. of all of the players in the American and National leagues. So, the book came about naturally due to nostalgia and my continued love of the sport.
What were the challenges in writing “Shiner and Baseball”?
NOLAN: The story telling comes about easily for me.
I did do some research on the “old timers” in baseball, however.
MBA&M: Which character in “Shiner and Baseball” is your favorite and why?
NOLAN: I think Cecil Miller, the new kid in town, who appears to be anything but a gifted homerun hitter with his thick lenses, store bought shoes, and corduroy pants, pet poodle, and his love of stamp collecting.  However, to Carley and Troop’s delight he turns out to be the “Mustangs” homerun king.
MBA&M: What genre do you enjoy reading?
NOLAN:  I like to read about American Indians as well as historical fiction.  I am an avid reader and have recently finished Follett’s three mammoth novels: Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, and Fall of the Giants.  When I was a kid I liked Wilson Rawls’ book “Where the Redfern Grows.”
MBA&M:  What are some of your writing rituals?
NOLAN: I used to have somewhat of a rigorous schedule years ago.  Besides, owning a business, teaching school, and helping to raise four kids, I wrote two hours a night starting at eleven p.m.
MBA&M:  What is on the horizon for you and your writing career?
NOLAN:   I will continue to write books for young adults.  I have many books in Vinspire’s queue and was just awarded a new book contract.
MBA&M:   What are some of your favorite movies and sports?
NOLAN:  I watch Netflix movies.  I prefer good foregin movies with subtitles.  I especially like movies about World War II. I like baseball (my team – the Royals) but I love football and cheer the K.C. Chiefs!
MBA&M: Tell our readers where to find you and where “Shiner and Baseball” is available?
NOLAN: You can Google my name (Nolan Carlson) and read about my books and my many school visits. Also, you can visit my web site:www.nolancarlson.com  as well as then click on my publisher’s web site: www.vinspirepublishing.com  and lastly visit Amazon.com and read reviews on my Summer & Shiner books. Also they can be ordered at any book stores.
 MBA&M:  Anything to add?
NOLAN: Just a final thank you to you and your readers.  And to convey to them if they are grandparents, parents, or teachers who have children from 8 to 14 years of age, Shiner and Baseball as well as my other books are right down their alley. The books mix fact and fiction, are wholesome and have subtle moral lessons, are exciting and fast moving, and have wonderful illustrations.  But most importantly, kids love to read them.  I have heard over and over that even reluctant male readers who start the books start to love to read for the first time and read the entire series plus my books out of the series.
Thank you all once again.  Nolan Carlson, Ph.D.  (author)
Thank you Nolan, for taking the time out to visit with us and our readers today!!
