MBA&M: Hello, Joseph and welcome to My Book Addiction and More! Please give our readers some  insight into Joseph Spencer?

I’m from Peoria, Illinois. It’s one of the largest downstate cities in the state, located about 3 hours southwest of Chicago. When I was a newspaper journalist, I also briefly resided in Martinsville, Va., Grand Junction, Co., and Burlington, Iowa.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Grim”?

Grim started with the character Heath Grim. He was inspired by Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker in Dark Knight. I wanted to create a character which created chaos like the Joker character, but had more of a sympathetic story. I’ve always loved gritty, edgy characters which are morally gray. I wanted to take my readers down a more chaotic path than what was explored in the Dark Knight.

MBA&M: Why write paranormal crime thrillers?

I work with police officers every day at the emergency 9-1-1 communications center, so I try to infuse my writing with some of the personalities I hear on the radio. I’m also drawn to the paranormal side because one of my favorite TV series is Supernatural. I’ve also enjoyed reading some of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Connelly novels, so I’m writing material close to what most entertains me as a reader.

MBA&M: Who would you say your favorite crime fighters where? Why?

I’ve been fortunate to have two of my favorite crime fighters immortalized on screen recently. I grew up a huge fan of Batman and Sherlock Holmes. I’ve come to like Dexter Morgan, Jack Reacher and Doctor Kay Scarpetta yarns as I’ve grown older. My wife and I enjoy watching Castle and Megan Hunt of Body of Proof, too. Sherlock always fascinated me because he observed things others took for granted. Batman attracted me because of the anti-hero tones to him and the tragic storyline. Until recently with TV bringing back Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter, I thought Dexter was unique and iconic for being an anti-hero, serial-killing crime fighter with a wit as sharp as his knife. Jack Reacher is pure grit. Doctor Kay and Megan Hunt are medical genuises, and Castle made me want to write a novel.

MBA&M: What was the hardest scene to write?

The hardest scene for me was the final confrontation between Adam White, Cyrus Black and Heath Grim. Everything else led up to that point, and there’s pressure when you build up a story like that to deliver a conclusion which will knock your readers on their asses. I didn’t want to disappoint readers who invested their time in reading the rest of the book with a lame ending.

MBA&M: What three words describe your writing style?

I will steal some from my reviewers. I believe the most often words used to describe me are gory, gritty and complex.

MBA&M: What would you say the most exciting part of writing is and why?

There are so many parts of life that are defined for you. What I love about writing is the freedom to create whole new worlds and characters. The only limits to what you can create are the ones that you place on yourself. It’s an exhilirating process to start with nothing but an empty white screen on my laptop, and finish with a story I made up on my own.

MBA&M: Do you feel any deep connection to your characters? If so, why?

I believe there are parts of you in every character you create. It doesn’t necessarily mean that every character is a direct reflection on the author. For me, each character recreates a person I’ve known or tells a story I’ve seen or read about or reflects on my feelings and experiences in life.

Joseph SpencerAbout the Author:

As a boy, Joseph Spencer immersed himself in the deductive logic of Sherlock Holmes, the heroic crime fighting of Batman and Spider-Man, and a taste for the tragic with dramas from poets like Shakespeare and Homer.

Before Joseph took to spinning his own tales, he pursued a career in print sports journalism, graduating summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He covered such events as NASCAR’s Subway 500 race in Martinsville, the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago, the Junior College World Series, and Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League All-Star Game during a ten-year career throughout the Midwest. Now, he works as an emergency telecommunications specialist with an Illinois police department. The combination of years of writing experience with a background working with law enforcement professionals gave rise to his writing aspirations.

Joseph was married Dr. Amy (Waggoner) Spencer, an accomplished veterinary doctor, on March 14, 2012. He received word his debut novel was accepted by his publisher, Damnation Books, the next day. Joseph and Amy look forward to their honeymoon in Paris in September 2012. Murphy, a 15-year-old orange tabby, is perhaps the most vocal member of the family. The Spencer family enjoys reading Charlaine Harris, George R.R. Martin, Mary Janice Davidson, and most paranormal stories. The Spencers also enjoy quoting movie lines from “The Princess Bride”, “Rain Man”, “Bridesmaids”, and “Office Space”.

His latest book is the paranormal crime thriller, Grim.

GrimAbout the Book:

In a gritty town rife with organized crime, dirty cops and corrupt politicians, Detective Adam White stands alone as the people’s symbol of justice and hope for a brighter future. He’s cracked the biggest cases, and stood up to the crime families who’ve torn apart Prairieville with their power struggles. He’s gorgeous, humble and incorruptible; a crime fighter so pure that the locals nicknamed him the White Knight.

What the people don’t know is their reluctant hero is cracking before their eyes. Ten years have passed since a pack of bank robbers gunned down his wife in the street. He’s relentlessly worked every case he could get his hands on since that night with the hopes of finding some link to her killer, but every lead always winds up a dead end. He made a vow on her death bed that he wouldn’t stop looking or move on with his life, personal or otherwise, until her killer was either dead or behind bars.

His obsession is starting to affect his work, including a new set of murders which are eerily similar to cold cases in which a gangland legend called The Reaper is the main suspect. A routine canvas of the area in which the bodies were found led Detective White to Heath Grim, a reclusive millionaire with grisly facial scars and a past which doesn’t quite add up. There’s something about his story which makes Detective White curious to dig deeper into his background.

Just as Detective White closes in on his killer, the mob hatches an elaborate scheme which could cost him everything. In his moment of need, an unlikely ally presents a way out of the plot against him and information on his wife’s killer. However, it leaves Prairieville’s paragon of justice with a moral dilemma. Can he abandon all of the heroic ideals upon which he’s based his life and become the type of man he’s hunted for so long to settle a score with his wife’s killer?
