Hi! Thank you so much for having me here today.
MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few tidbits about Debra Kayn?
I live in the beautiful coastal mountains of Oregon. I’m married to the man I met on a blind date when I was 19. We have four kids ranging in age from 16 to 22. During the summer, I love to ride motorcycles, play tennis, and go fishing on our creek. In the winter, it’s all about being outside. I love the snow and cold. I love soft caramel squares. I buy too many boots. And, I own a pink sparkly fishing pole that lights up when I reel in a fish.
Oh! And, I’m famous in my family for teaching a 270 lb pig named Harley to jog with me every morning.
MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Rodeo Rebel”?
Unlike Florentine, my heroine, I grew up with all brothers. I learned to play hard or go home. I turned out to be quite the tomboy. Florentine is the tomboy in the McDougal family, and I wanted to show that women could be sexy, nurturing, and still compete against the men in one of the world’s most dangerous sport…bull riding.
MBA&M: Can you give our readers some insight/challenges into writing a story pertaining to the rodeo and ranch life?
Writing about ranch life was like writing about my own life. I’m a country gal. Riding bulls was a whole ‘nother thing. I sat beside my hubs and watched tons of bull riding events, and I even contacted a professional rodeo rider who gave me an insider’s view of what they really think of women riding bulls. Of course, he was supportive of females participating in rodeo, but it’s not an easy sport for a woman to compete with the bulls. Cowboys get awful protective of women, whether riding bulls or doing something dangerous.
MBA&M: What where some interesting facts you find while writing “Rodeo Rebel”?
There have been a few women who have rode in the PBRA. It’s hard information to find, and it’s still not clear whether all of them merely competed against other PBRA riders or were actual members of the PBRA.
MBA&M: What are some things that influence your writing,and what do you have in your writing cave?
My real life experiences influence my writing the most. I love small towns and the west coast. I also love the ethnic and high morals of a cowboy. They’re all sexy gentleman who aren’t afraid to get dirty.
My writing cave is in my family room. I have a huge desk in the corner. The more noise the kids make or the radio/tv blasting, the more I can slip into my zone and write. I’ve tried to write in silence, but it drives me crazy.
MBA&M: What is in your “To Read” pile?
I’m anxious to start Deadly Secrets, Loving Lies by Cynthia Cooke and The Witness by Nora Roberts. The rest are a secret, because if my hubs finds out exactly how many books are in my TBR pile, he’s going to question how much of the grocery money I spend each week for books. Right now, I’m flying under his radar. 
MBA&M: What author would you say most influenced your writing style?
Each book I read influences me. I’m a huge believer that if you’re going to be a writer, you need to read. Every author has a different voice that works for them, and helps me find my voice in my writing.

Joanne – Cole does indeed have auburn hair.
Debbie – I live in the coastal mountains of Oregon. It's very rural here with no neighbors in sight…and also no high speed internet. lol I think I'm the only person in the world who still uses dialup internet.
This makes an interesting twist in the story. Usually it the other way around when an heroine inherits the company and the bull rider is the hero. The story would be very interesting to read.
Looking forward to reading about a female bull rider!

Kai – Thanks. It was a lot of fun to write scenes when Florentine had to deal with the male bull riders. She's a woman who can stand up for herself!
MaryC – Unfortunately, the hogs only stay on the farm for 5-6 months. I kept Harley for 7 months, but that was one pig that was in great shape!
Btw, In the 3rd Sisters of McDougal Ranch book, Margot's Lawman, you will meet Harley Hog, who I portrayed after the real Harley. He plays a small part throughout the book.
