~~~WELCOME HEATHER~~~
Thank you so much for having me here today on My Book Addiction!
We are so glad to have you with us and our readers today.
Please tell our readers a bit about yourself, for those who do not know you?
I am a mom of three kids (ages 14, 11, and 6) and a crazy rescued golden retriever. I’m extremely lucky to have found my own Highland hero, my husband, Braden. Braden was blessed with the perfect last name for a writer of Scottish historical romance – McCollum – thus making him a very desirable prospect for me – LOL!
When I’m not writing, making meals for perpetually hungry kids, and walking my dog, I’m usually on my “soap box” educating women about ovarian cancer. Six months ago I finished 15 months of chemo to kill that silent, sneaky, deadly beast. I’m using whatever talents I have to spread the warning about the whispered symptoms of ovarian cancer. My full length 16th century Scottish romance, CAPTURED HEART, has them listed in the back: bloating, pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, urinary issues are the main symptoms.
highland heartMBA&M: What was your inspiration behind “HIGHLAND HEART”?
Scenes from both CAPTURED HEART and HIGHLAND HEART began playing through my mind while my husband and I visited Scotland a decade ago. The heather-draped moors, rocky outcroppings, glittery lochs, and soaring mountains enthralled me. It was easy to imagine Macbain and Munro warriors riding through the mist. The magic of the country’s history still lingers in the land. I could smell it on the breeze, hear it echoing in the boulders, and taste it in their bannocks. I’m thrilled to be returning to the Highlands this July, this time with kids in tow.
MBA&M: What do you feel the allure of Scotland’s Highlands and magic is to readers today?
It is easy to imagine fairies, witches and supernatural elements living within the sweeping landscape of Scotland’s Highlands. The country’s legends are as large as the mountains and the dramatic history is as deep as Loch Ness. The people have such passion for their land and culture and this passion translates easily to heartfelt, magical stories.
In this age of instant front-row seats to war and horrific reality covering the front pages of newspapers, readers need a break where happy endings are promised. Even with the brutal history of Scotland, the strength and determination of the Scottish people give readers fantastic heroes to root for and love.
MBA&M: Who was your favorite character to write about and why?
Caden Macbain, the chief and hero of CAPTURED HEART, is probably my favorite character so far. He has such a deep love and commitment to his clan that he’s willing to capture an innocent woman to save his people. When he finds he’s attracted to her, he continues to visit ten houses in his village everyday to remind himself of the importance of his mission. He must use the lass despite the fact that she’s besieging his heart.
MBA&M: Will readers see more of the Scottish Highlands?
Oh yes! Although, we will take a little side trip down to Henry VIII’s court in England, which is the setting for the full-length sequel to CH, TANGLED HEARTS. But the next book will follow this amazing family back up into Scotland.
MBA&M: Which is harder to write novellas or a full length novel?
For me? The novella, definitely. I’m much more comfortable writing a 100K word full-length novel than anything under 20K words, even though it takes much longer. I have a harder time making my characters evolve realistically and fall in love in a shorter story. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time.
MBA&M: How do authors cram so much story with so few words?
Hmmm…good question. Like I said above, the shorter stories are quite a challenge for me. It really requires precise descriptions and creatively succinct detail. An author must use the perfect words to convey the depth of the story in a short novella. There is no room for extra, yet the author must still leave the reader feeling satisfied.
MBA&M: What is next for you?
I have several stories in the works. The fourth book in THE DRAGONFLY CHRONICLES is being edited and will be out later this year. My first YA romance, SIREN’S SONG, will be coming out in 2014. And my second full-length romance in the HIGHLAND HEARTS series with Entangled Publishing, TANGLED HEARTS, will be out this summer.
