MBA&M IS HONORED TO PRESENT…..

~INVISIBLE MAGIC BY MARY BUCKHAM~

Invisible Magic Cover

Good Morning, Mary! And welcome to My Book Addiction and More!
Now to the nitty gritty, please give our readers some insight into Mary Buckham?

MBA&M: What made you decide to write Urban Fantasy?

MB***I started writing in Romantic Suspense because I loved the pacing and the complexity of plot possibilities. It seemed natural to expand what I did in Romantic Suspense by adding bigger threats [aka preternatural beings], a larger world to have my characters play in and lots more action.  I also love the fun you can have when you create bad-ass characters meeting smart-ass characters!

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Alex Noziak,Invisible Recruits” series, how did you know which story would be first, and how did  “Invisible Magic” and its characters evolve into a full blown series?

MB***This series grew out of a series I started for Harlequin Bombshell, which were kick-ass heroines with an element of a relationship. The first book in that series was Vaughn’s story – Debutante becomes Spy- and I received a lot of great feedback from readers loving the characters. Then, just as Alex Noziak’s story was to be published the line folded. With changes in the publishing industry there really weren’t a lot of venues for strong female protagonists who aren’t afraid of lots of action and danger until the Urban Fantasy genre started expanding. Alex was not going to keep quiet until I wrote her story and when I started INVISIBLE PRISON, her novella which explores how she became a covert agent in the Invisible Recruits Agency, it quickly became apparent that there was a lot to this part/witch, part/shaman woman who grew up with four shifter brothers in Mud Lake, Idaho. So I’m having a blast learning more about her with every story!

MBA&M: How hard is it to write a Urban Fantasy, that can or will hold readers attention?

MB*** I’m a reader as well as a writing craft instructor and bring both those abilities to the page to write the kind of story I enjoy. Lots of action. A plot that twists and tangles. Characters that are willing to do the right thing even when that’s hard. And fun secondary characters that keep the world interesting.  At this point the hardest part is keeping up with Alex and her teammates.

Invisible Magic CoverMBA&M: Which character in “Invisible Magic” do you most relate to and why?

MB*** I relate to all the Invisible Recruit teammates as each of them, in their own way, struggle with defining who they are in a world that doesn’t necessarily acknowledge their gifts. Most women I know struggle with issues of self-realization, juggling other’s needs over their own, identifying what passions drive them, and with feeling invisible at times. The teammates may have individual abilities–the use of magic, psychic powers, soul walking and turning invisible–but those gifts are no different than other gifts women have that may need a nudge to be accepted and appreciated.

MBA&M: What was your favorite scene to write and which was your most awkward?

MB*** Favorite scene? That’s a hard one. I love the give and take between the teammates and the sexual tension between Alex Noziak and the warlock Bran. That’s a clash of two different worlds colliding and that’s always exciting to explore. The most awkward? I think writing the end is always the hardest. It’s like stepping away from these amazing people, like separating from your best friend and not knowing if and when you’ll get to see them again.

MBA&M: Fantasy seems to a big box office ticket in the TV/Movie industry….Your “Invisible Recruits” series has been picked up,who do you see as the hero/heroine of this series, and some of the secondary characters, for the fall lineup?

MB***Oh, love this questions <grin>. On my website – www.InvisibleRecruits.com – I’ve actually created a page for each character with an image and a description of them from Alex’s POV.  I can see Tanya Beatty who is Native American and was in Twilight playing the role of Alex. I could see Lambert Wilson or Ben Affleck playing the warlock Bran. I see Gina Torres (Serenity and Matrix Revolutions)  playing Jaylene the psychic who grew up on the mean streets of Chicago and Michelle Rodriguez  (SWAT and the Fast and the Furious) to play Mandy.

MBA&M: What was your favorite part of writing this series?

MB***Favorite part is exploring these very complex women who are all hiding secrets and scars from the past and watching them come into their own, not easily or without trial and error, but they never give up. And that’s exciting. Then it’s also fun to find who to pair them with for sparks to fly.

MBA&M: Who do you feel influenced your writing the most, and who do you feel your writing style resembles?

MB**I’d say my style most resembles Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris or Ilona Andrews. I use a lot of wry humor on the page, high-octane action and emotion. As for influences I read broadly-loved the conflict in the YA Hunger Games, the complexity of Meg Gardiner’s Thrillers, the word weaving of Dennis Lehane, the large picture scope of the Belador series by Sherillyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.

MBA&M: Who do you look to for encouragement and who is your hero, real or fiction? Why?

MB*** This is one in the same-my husband who believes in me when I have doubts, who is my first reader, is willing to read books that are not his normal choice of reading material so I can have a sounding board to talk out ideas, who is always willing to give me what if scenarios even if I don’t use them all, plus he cooks for me (I forget that eating thing when I get into my writing). He truly is my hero, my best friend and the one I get to celebrate with every time a new book is launched!

MBA&M: What is your favorite time of day and what motivates you the most to write?

MB*** I’m a night person (hubby calls me a vampire) because growing up and having five siblings, including a sister I shared a room with, it was only late at night, when everyone else was asleep that I could read and disappear into magic worlds. I’m driven to write by the stories in my head. They compel me to do them justice. My job is to show up at the page and not muck up the words.

MBA&M: Now, please tell our readers where to find you and where they may purchase “Invisible Magic”?Invisible Magic Cover

Mary, do you have anything you would like to add?

***I want to thank you for inviting me here today. It’s because of bloggers like you that writers and readers can connect and that’s an amazing contribution to the community of readers and writers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I also love hearing from readers. Readers are what keep writers writing. Without you I’d be reduced to writing grocery and to-do lists for my hubby. So he thanks you too!

~Thank you, Mary! We are excited to have you with us today and our readers~

Good luck in your writing career!
