Q&A with author Devan Sipher and giveawa..

Today we at MBA are proud to welcome author Devan Sipher! Please sit back and enjoy our chat.

MBA&M: Devan, please tell our readers a few tidbits about yourself.

Devan: I was born in Los Angeles, grew up in the Midwest and have lived in New York for two decades.  The result is I talk fast, hold doors open for women, and like wearing shorts and flip-flops whenever possible.

MBA&M: Where did the idea for THE WEDDING BEAT come from?

Devan: For five years, I was a writer of the Vows wedding column at The New York Times.  As a 40-something, single guy writing about other people’s weddings, it occurred to me that my life would seem far more amusing to someone who wasn’t living it.

MBA&M: Did you do any research before writing THE WEDDING BEAT?

Devan:My research was mostly just doing my work at the Times. I also read a lot of romance and romantic comedy books, from Nicholas Sparks to Helen Fielding.  I wanted to fully immerse myself in the genre.

MBA&M: Which of the characters in THE WEDDING BEAT do you most identify with and why?

Devan: The main character in The Wedding Beat is also a single guy writing a wedding column for a major newspaper.  So we have a bit in common.  For the record, I’m taller, but he gets the girl in the end, which is something I’m still working on.

MBA&M: What is on the horizon for you and your writing career?

Devan: I have a two-book deal.  So I’m writing the second book, which I’m not supposed to say a lot about, but I can say it’s about two people who make a lot of wrong turns on their way to finding each other.  The tagline is “Sometimes love at first sight can take a lifetime.”

MBA&M: Who is the hero/heroine in your life? Why?

Devan: My grandmother is 96 years old and still runs three miles every day.  She is living proof of the power of positive thinking – and I only hope I’ve inherited some of her genes.

MBA&M: What are some of your favorite things to do when relaxing?

Devan: I love taking long walks along the water.  I live in Manhattan, and I like to remind myself as often as possible that I live on an island.  I’ve even been known to take a midnight run along the Hudson River on a balmy night.

MBA&M: Tell us where to find you and where to find THE WEDDING BEAT?

Devan: My Web site is www.devansipher.com, and there are links to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks and Indiebound.  You can also follow me on Twitter @DevanSipher or get the latest news at www.facebook.com/DevanSipher

Devan, do you have anything to add?

Interviewing thousands of brides and grooms has given me the opportunity to learn many things.  The most important is that happiness is a choice.  The Wedding Beat is my lighthearted way of sharing that message.

Thank you for visiting with us and our readers today!!!

  1. Enjoyed the post. Congratulations on the release of The Wedding Beat; it sounds like a fun read. Did you write before you started writing the Vows column, and if so was it for newspapers? Why did you start wrting the Vows column? Wishing you continued success!

  2. What a fun interview Devan! Living from coast to coast and somewhere in between, I like to think you liked the in between the best though I am just prejudiced.

Life can sometimes be a bit of a downer, we sometimes struggle to see the fun stuff or the good things. So I like that you took some aspects of your life and turned it into a lighthearted feel good story. That and really what girl can resist weddings? Certainly not me!

Congrats on your release! It sounds like a fun read =)

  3. Your book sounds lovely! I've never read a book where a man writes a wedding column – look forward to reading it.

  4. Congrats on the book release. This book sounds fantastic. Can't wait to read it.

  5. It's great to know that you wrote the book based on your experience. A guy in the book just seems to always end up with the girl. It would be always nice to end up with the girl in real life. Congrats and Good Luck.
