WELCOME TODAY’S GUEST, SHANA GALEN!!
Thanks so much for hosting me today!
MBA&M: What influenced you to write stories during the Regency era in England, about spies and romantic thrillers?
When I started reading romances, I loved books set during the Regency period. It was such an interesting time because of the Peninsular Wars and the fact that George III, who had been so instrumental in the war against the United States, was incapacitated due to mental illness. His son, Prince George, was not well liked and was given to extreme excess. At the same time, the rules of the era were rather strict. Women had to protect their reputations and men protected their honor. The whole era is full of intriguing juxtapositions, which makes it an interesting time to write about.
I’ve always enjoyed writing books with a great deal of action, and since England was at war for most of the Regency, spies fit perfectly into the Regency world. I always enjoy books with big plots, and I love writing stories where the characters have to deal with more than who will marry whom or whether a reputation is ruined. I like to throw in a plot to assassinate the regent or the like to keep things interesting.
MBA&M: Who was your favorite author as an inspiring author? AND what was the first book you remember reading as a child?
My favorite historical author was and still is Marsha Canham. I love the richness of her books and the depth of her research. She’s also an author who writes very adventurous books, and that was an inspiration to me as well.
The first book I remember reading as a child was The Black Stallion. I spent most of a week of vacation by the lake with my nose buried in that book.
MBA&M: What would you like to most change in the world today?
I would like to change the way animals are used for food and entertainment. I’d eliminate factory farming and the cruelties associated with it, and I would get rid of circuses and places like SeaWorld. Our society is judged by the way we treat the weak and defenseless—animals, children, the elderly. I always advocate for a kinder world.
MBA&M: What is some of your favorite moments or most memorable moments, as an inspiring author, and your road to publication?
The most memorable moment had to be the day I decided to quit. I was down because I’d received yet another rejection, and I didn’t think I would ever be published. I was working so hard at publication and giving up so much, and it didn’t seem worth it. Later that day I got a call from a contest coordinator that I’d finaled in a contest. It seemed like a sign to keep writing, and I’m so glad I did.
MBA&M: Which author(s), if any, do you feel inspired your the most in your writing career? Why?
I’d have to say Julie Garwood. Her historicals are some of my favorite books ever. I love her humor and her heroes and the way she ends every chapter so you can’t help but turn the page. Now that I’m published I’m inspired all the time. Whenever I read a good book, it inspires me to make my writing better.
How fascinating! Thank you so much for spending a few moments of your time with us and our readers today! I love your historicals!!
