Megan Mulry, R IS FOR REBEL

Welcome, Megan!!!

R Is for Rebel: ...and Royalty, Relatives, Reality, and Running from love...

Thanks so much for having me stop by!

R is for REBEL COVER-FINALMBA&M: What was your inspiration for writing “R is for Rebel”?

MEGAN: I knew when I started the Unruly Royals series that I would write Abby’s story eventually. Then, when Eliot came to fruition in the second book, it just made sense to me that he—the most unlikely match for Abby—would be the best foil for her character.

MBA&M: Why write a story about a heiress, royalty and rebellion?

MEGAN: I love writing within an imaginary world of wealth and excess because then the conflicts are almost entirely internal. The external conflicts are…what? My private jet is in the shop? I need my hotel room upgraded? When everything appears to be hunky-dory from the outside, I think that’s when it’s really interesting to delve into what is going on inside someone’s brain, when the characters are forced to confront what they want and who they are (ironically) apart from their material possessions.

MBA&M:  Who do you feel was or is your greatest influence in your writing career?

MEGAN: So many teachers and writers have influenced my writing…it changes all the time. For some reason, right at this moment I’m thinking it was my high school English teacher who exposed me to Chaucer and Virginia Woolf, Alice Walker, E.B. White, and Zora Neale Hurston. That’s the person who was the most instrumental by opening up the world of books for me. In terms of my career, I think my agent has been the greatest influence, in terms of keeping me excited and forward-thinking year after year, for the long haul.

MBA&M: What do you wish to accomplish in your life, you have not as yet accomplished?

MEGAN: I guess I don’t really think of my life in terms of specific accomplishments anymore, but more about the type of person I hope to be on a daily basis. If I can be a loving wife and mother, an attentive friend, a caring sister/daughter, than I feel much more peaceful than if I achieve some external milestone. That said, I have to confess, I do dream of having a home in France at some point, where everyone I love can come visit and drink wine and eat unpasteurized cheese and write all the livelong day.

 MBA&M: How did you and your loved one celebrate Valentine’s Day?

MEGAN: The best laid plans! We thought we’d have a romantic dinner at home and snuggle on the couch to watch the Olympics. After my husband fixed me a cocktail, we sank down in front of the tube just before 8:00 pm. By 8:10 pm I was sound asleep with my head on his shoulder and our dog curled up by my feet. Not very glamorous, but I like to think all that bone-deep comfort after a hectic week is the bedrock of true romance. At least, I hope so!

Thanks again for inviting me to stop by!

{R IS FOR REBEL, Unruly Royals #4, February 2014}

Being royal isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…

Abigail Heyworth, youngest daughter of the 18th Duke of Northrop, is not your typical British royal—she’ll take a recycling drive over a charity ball any day. She can’t stand hats and heels. Abby’s not getting much sympathy, of course, because everyone thinks the life of royalty is so charmed.

But to Abigail, keeping up appearances is unbearable, while running away doesn’t seem to work either. Just when she feels like she’s getting whiplash from swinging between flat-out rebellion to miserable capitulation, Abigail meets an all-American self-made millionaire who challenges her on every level.

It may turn out that what Abigail is searching for kind of resembles the American Dream…
