Excerpt:

Against-the-Tide(300x500)(1)Valdez, Alaska

The piercing ring of the cell phone lying on his nightstand didn’t bode well. There was no such thing as good news at three o’clock in the morning.
With a sigh, Rafe rolled over and grabbed the phone, scrubbed a hand over his face as he pressed it against his ear. “Brodie.”
“Police Chief Rosen here. We’ve got a problem, Rafe, and it’s not a good one. I need you to meet me down at the harbor. How soon can you get here?”
Rafe swung his long legs to the side of the bed and sat up. “Ten minutes. What’s this about, Chief?”
“It’s Scotty Ferris, Rafe. I’m afraid he’s dead. I’ll fill you in when you get here. I’ll be waiting on the dock next to the Scorpion.” The police chief hung up the phone.
For several long moments, Rafe just sat there. His chest felt tight. Scotty Ferris was twenty-four years old, a handsome, hard-working kid who was engaged to be married. His June wedding to Cassie Webster, one of the local girls, was only three weeks away. Cassie was going to be crushed.
Rafe swore softly. What the hell could have happened?
But in this rugged country where the climate, wild animals, or just bad judgment could get you killed, accidents happened all the time.
Shoving himself up from the bed, Rafe grabbed a pair of worn jeans off the chair and jerked them on, pulled a sweatshirt over his head, pulled on his heavy sox, and shoved his size-thirteen feet into a pair of high-topped, rubber-soled boots. Since the temperature at night even in late May was still in the thirties and it had rained during the night, he grabbed his jacket as he headed for the steps down to the garage.
The boat harbor wasn’t far from his house. Sea Scorpion was his flagship charter fishing boat, a thirty-eight-foot Mac, his pride and joy. It was the boat he usually captained himself, one of three that made up his fleet. Scotty Ferris was part of Scorpion’s crew.
Rafe thought of the young man as he parked his dark green Ford Expedition in a spot in front of the harbor, climbed out, and closed the door. Puddles from last night’s rain sloshed against his boots as he made his way toward the dock. The occasional street light burned into the darkness but quiet surrounded him, along with the familiar salty tang of the sea.
Rafe couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
Which brought his thoughts full-circle to Scotty. With year-round residents numbering less that forty-five hundred, everyone knew everyone who lived there. And everyone knew and liked Scotty. The kid had been born in Valdez. He thrived on the rugged lifestyle, planned to marry and raise kids here, probably never would have left.
What the hell had happened? Rafe thought again as he walked toward his boat.
And why did Chief Rosen want to meet him at the Scorpion?
A few spaces down from where’d he parked, Rafe spotted a black-and-silver Ford police SUV. In the distance, the familiar antenna above the wheelhouse of the Scorpion marked where the boat bobbed near the middle of the dock.
Rafe started down the long wooden walkway, his gaze on the group of people gathered next to where the Scorpion was moored. The area was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, the boat clearly off limits until the police were finished collecting evidence.
Police Chief Clifford Rosen, a stout man in his fifties, bald head ringed by thinning gray hair, stood next to a figure lying on the dock, covered by a long white cloth. Knowing Scotty Ferris lay under the cloth made Rafe’s stomach burn.
“What happened?” he asked the chief.
“Looks like he was robbed,” Rosen answered. “Wallet’s missing, jewelry’s gone. Car keys. Cell phone’s missing. Single blow to the back of the head. Blunt instrument. Baseball bat seems the most likely, something that size that was easy to handle.”
“Jesus.”
“I asked you to come down because I need someone to identify the body. With his parents both dead, I figured better you than his fiancée. Soon as you do that, I’ll break the news to the Webster girl.”
Rafe just nodded. Cassie was going to be devastated. She and Scotty were crazy in love, the kind Rafe figured had a good chance of lasting. Sometimes fate could be a real bastard.
One of the officers, a red-haired young cop Rafe recognized as Rusty Donovan, leaned down and lifted the edge of the sheet. As the cover rolled back, Rafe’s gaze fixed on Scotty. The boy’s brown eyes were open, staring sightlessly into the black night sky. His handsome face was frozen in a look of surprise.
He was wearing a jacket but it was unzipped, revealing a long-sleeved blue T-shirt that read FISHERMEN DO IT DEEPER. Rafe could almost see the grin on the kid’s face when he’d put it on.
“It’s him,” he said darkly. “Scott Ferris.”
“You know what he was doing down here?”
“No.”
But once he got his head wrapped around Scotty’s death, he intended to find out.

Against-the-Tide(300x500)The breakfast crowd at the Pelican Café had begun to arrive, as people did every morning when it opened at six A.M. The café had been started in the fifties and been going strong every since. Of course it had passed through a dozen different owners, had its ups and downs, and been near financial ruin more than once.
Having purchased the restaurant six months ago, Olivia Chandler was the most recent person to step into the driver’s seat. Unlike the previous owner, who had let the place sink into disrepair, Olivia had been making changes, most of which had been heralded with great enthusiasm by the local customers.
“Well, look who’s coming,” Nell said. The buxom woman with salt-and-pepper hair helped her run the café. “If it isn’t Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome.”
Liv followed her gaze out the window to the man in jeans and a sweatshirt crossing the outside patio. The brick patio was empty now while it was still cold, but with summer approaching, soon would be noisy with people.
Katie walked past just then, heading for a table with a platter of bacon and eggs on the flat of her hand. “I just call him Mr. Freakin’ Hot.”
“Shame on you,” Liv teased. “You just turned twenty one. Rafe Brodie’s got to be at least a dozen years older.”
“Just means he’s a man not a boy. And I like a guy with a little experience.”
“From what I hear, he has plenty of that,” Liv said dryly as Katie sailed off to deliver the food.
Nell chuckled. “I’m fifty years old and that man can still make me swoon.”
Olivia busied herself wiping off the long Formica-topped counter as Rafe shoved through the door, ringing the bell above. Seating himself in his usual booth, he stretched his long legs out in front of him. Rafe was a regular in the café, which sat on North Harbor Road right across from the boat dock.
“Katie’s busy,” Nell said with a match-making glint in her eyes. “Why don’t you wait on him?”
Olivia shook her head. “I’m busy, too. You go ahead.”
Knowing there was no persuading her, Nell sighed. “Probably better you don’t. Everyone in town knows Rafe’s a dedicated bachelor.”
Dedicated bachelor or not, Nell and Katie were right. With the thick dark brown hair curling just over his collar, the faint shadow of beard that usually lined his hard jaw, and those hot, whiskey-brown eyes, he was one of the best-looking men Olivia had ever seen.
Which was exactly the reason she had avoided him since the day she had met him.
No use putting temptation in her path. It was simply too dangerous.
She watched as Nell chatted with him a moment, then the easy smile Nell usually gave him slipped from her face. The coffee pot wavered. Rafe grabbed the glass pot to keep her from dropping it and spilled hot coffee over his hand.
Olivia didn’t hesitate, just grabbed a towel, wet it with cold water, and hurried in Rafe’s direction. He was sitting down again, Nell fussing over him, relieved to see Olivia approaching.
“Here–wrap this around your fingers.” Liv handed him the wet towel. “It’s cold enough to ease the pain and keep the burn from getting worse.”
“I’m all right,” Rafe said. “It’s no big deal.” But he accepted the wet cloth and looped it over the back of a big suntanned hand.
The man was all of six-four, two-hundred-plus pounds, with a solid, athletic build and very wide shoulders. Liv was five-nine, but Rafe was more than half a head taller. She tried not to stare at his mouth, which seemed harder this morning, without the smile he always had for Nell.
She glanced in her friend’s direction, sucked in a breath as Nell’s pale blue eyes filled with tears.
“Oh, God, what is it?”
Nell blinked and the tears rolled down her cheeks. She wiped at the wetness with a trembling hand. “I could tell something was wrong. It was stamped all over Rafe’s face.”
Liv glanced from one of them to the other, saw the same grim expression on both of their faces. “Tell me what’s happened.”
Nell swallowed. “It’s…it’s Scotty. He was murdered last night.”
Liv glanced across the table at Rafe. His jaw looked iron-hard, his eyes so dark she could barely see a hint of gold. For the first time it occurred to her that Rafe was hurting, too. Scotty was his first mate and they were friends. Cassie had said Scott idolized Rafe, had thought of him as an older brother.
His dark eyes to her face. “Scott was a good man. One of the best. Whoever killed him is going to pay.”
A little shiver ran through her. It wasn’t a statement. It was a vow.
And Liv completely believed it.

GUEST BLOGGER~ KAT MARTIN~ AGAINST THE SKY…RELEASE DAY!! with Excerpt and #Giveaway…

HAPPY RELEASE DAY, KAT MARTIN!

Against-the-Sky-cover-(300x

What is the fascination with Alaska and romance?
If you’ve ever traveled to Alaska, you would know the answer. Alaska is the embodiment of rugged, beautiful, and romantic all wrapped in one. A man who can survive and be happy there is the ultimate man’s man. But it’s also a place of danger and even intrigue. Finding the right woman for a man who lives such a rugged life was a fascinating challenge. In AGAINST THE SKY, Nick Brodie is an ex-Anchorage police detective, so his story is a little more city-Alaska.

Inquiring minds want to know, or me rather….Why use Alaska as your setting for this series?
Having traveled fairly extensively (a month, two times, staying in the back of a pickup camper!), I wanted to explore the men who lived in the wild vastness. I wanted each of the three brothers to have an adventure that would lead them to a woman who would perfectly suit them.

Previously I had written a book called Midnight Sun, which was also set in Alaska, and readers seemed to really enjoy the setting. So I figured why not try it again?

How did the concept of the Brodie Brothers come about?
My first three Against book, Against the Winds, Against the Fire, and Against the Law, dealt with the Raines brothers. Readers liked the family connection, and I really liked the character interactions. Alaska seemed to shout for a family connection of the same sort, thus the Brodie Brothers were born.

How many books will be in the Against series, the Brodies of Alaska?
So far just the three brothers, but I have 3 more ideas (guys readers will meet in the next two books). If readers want more of Alaska, I would love to do three more books.

What was the most difficult scene to write in Against the Sky and why?
One of the most difficult involved an incident that happens to Samantha, but it’s a turning point of the book and part of the surprise so I can’t say. Some of the research I did on the internet that involved on-line prostitution was pretty…interesting. Or perhaps I should say enlightening!

What do you as an author look forward to seeing in the future of publishing, and online media?
I hope there is a better way to tell us about great books. I’m at the stage where I’m finding it difficult to locate the kinds of books I want to read. From a personal standpoint I hope on-line media will help me reach readers who have never tried one of my novels.

Of your many tales of romance and adventure, which series, do you feel was your greatest accomplishment and why?
My Against series, absolutely. It’s my best writing, my best stories. It allows me to expand into any kind of plot I want to write. It allows me far greater use of language, expressions, etc, words that aren’t limited by time and place, the way historical novels are. .

Thank you, Kat for visiting with us and our readers today and HAPPY RELEASE DAY!! What a fastinicating series!!

Against-the-Sky-cover-(300xRelease date: 1/27/15
BACK COVER COPY:
ALASKA. In America’s last wilderness there is no limits to what a man can do.
For detective Nick Brodie, that means keeping the perps off the streets of Anchorage 24/7. Nick has never backed down from danger, but after the horrors he’s seen, he’s definitely in need of a break.
Samantha Hollis never thought she’d meet anyone like Nick, especially in a place like Las Vegas. But after one reckless, passionate night, she discovers the charismatic stranger is everything she wants in a man. But can he ever be more than a one-night stand?
When Nick invites her to Alaska, Samantha decides to find out, never guessing the depths she’ll discover in him or the tangle of murder, kidnapping, and danger about to engulf them both …

SHORT BLURB:
AGAINST THE SKY is a fish out of water story. Nick Brodie, an ex-Anchorage cop, is tough as nails, a true man’s man, comfortable in the hard life in Alaska. But Samantha Hollis, owner of a pet grooming parlor in San Francisco likes shopping at Sak’s and a day at the spa. Unwillingly swept into Nick’s problems, Samantha finds herself on a wild ride that leads them in to passion and terrible danger.
It was fun finding ways to make their relationship work when they seem so very far apart. This one’s very fast paced, but it has a soft heart. It turned out to be one of my favorites.

REVIEW QUOTES
“Against the Sky by Kat Martin sizzles enough to melt a polar icecap. She allows these two polar opposite to find that elusive chemistry that the world craves, but their differences present enough of a challenge that one wonders I love can conquer all or not. Kick in the suspense and danger from the Russian mob and voila! Romantic suspense!”
“Wow, the action scenes are so exciting. I never knew what would happen next.”
“The second book in Kat Martin’s Brodie’s of Alaska series delivers an awesome punch of suspense and romance.”

Against-the-Sky-cover-(300xAGAINST THE SKY
By Kat Martin

Chapter One

Samantha had almost reached her door when she saw a man walking toward her, tall and heavyset, weaving a little. His suit was wrinkled, his brown hair mussed and falling over a wide forehead. Obviously he was drunk.
She didn’t like the leering grin that appeared on his flushed face as he spotted her and staggered in her direction. Samantha opened her purse and began digging frantically for her key card. She was still searching when the man stopped in front of her.
“Hello there, sweetheart. Aren’t you a pretty little thing?”
She ignored him, kept on digging, couldn’t find the damned card, prayed she hadn’t left it in her room.
“Not talking, huh? I’m Howard.” He stuck out a meaty hand she ignored, finally let it drop. “Want me to help you find your key?”
“No, thank you.” For once, she wished her purse wasn’t so big.
“Say, why don’t we go downstairs and have a drink? There’s a lot of great restaurants in the hotel. What do you say I buy you dinner?”
His words were thick and a faintly slurred, though Samantha didn’t think he was quite as drunk as he had first seemed.
“I have plans.” Like a soak in the tub and an early evening. “Please leave me alone.”
Pain-in-the-ass Howard’s bushy eyebrows went up. “No reason to take that attitude.” He started crowding her, forcing her back against the door. She wasn’t very big and he towered above her.
He moved closer, knocking the shoes she had taken off to soothe her aching feet out of her hand. “Come on, what do you say?”
“I told you to leave me alone.” Samantha set her palms on his thick chest and tried to push him away. “If you don’t leave, I’m going to call security.” She pushed, didn’t budge him. “Please–I’m just not interested.”
“Come on, sweetheart, it’s only a drink.”
He had her completely boxed in against the door, and though her heart was thrumming away, she was more angry than scared. There were hotel cameras everywhere. In another second, she was going to scream.
She might have done it if good ol’ Howard hadn’t suddenly been jerked away like a puppet on a string and slammed hard against the wall. In an instant, he was facing the opposite direction, spread-eagled, legs splayed, one of his beefy arms forced up behind his back.
“Time to go home, buddy. The lady has other plans.”
“What business is that of yours?”
Her rescuer, tall and broad-shouldered with wavy black hair, cranked the arm up higher, drawing a hiss of pain. “I told you the lady has plans.”
“Don’t hurt him,” Samantha said. “He’s just drunk.”
The most amazing blue eyes she had ever seen swung in her direction. “He a friend of yours?”
“Heavens, no. I was just trying to open the door to my room when he walked up and started accosting me.”
The black-haired man turned back to good ol’ Howard, who seemed to have realized the game was up. “Thanks to the lady, I’m letting you go and not calling the hotel police. If you’re smart, you’ll walk away, go back to your room and sober up.”
Howard stiffened. The arm behind his back got cranked a little higher. Howard hissed and nodded.
“Smart move.” Easing up a little, her rescuer released him and stepped away. With a last angry glance, Howard moved off at a loping stagger down the hall, heading back the way he had come.
“You okay?”
Dear God, the man was handsome. With his blue eyes, high-cheekbones, and straight nose, he was one of the best-looking men she had ever seen. The shadow of a late-afternoon beard along his jaw gave him a slightly dangerous appearance that only made him more attractive.
She managed to drag her gaze away from those arresting blue eyes and found her voice. “Thanks to you, I’m fine. Are you a policeman or something?”
“Used to be. Nick Brodie. Glad I could help.”
She smiled. “I’m Samantha Hollis. You came just in time. I really appreciate what you did. Most people would have just kept walking.”
“Not where I come from.”
“Really? Where’s that?”
“Alaska. Up there, people help each other. Sometimes it’s a matter of life and death.” He looked her up and down. “You aren’t very big. That bastard was twice your size.”
“As I said, he was mostly just drunk.”
“I guess.”
Trying to ignore the nerves she was beginning to feel, she grabbed the purse slung over her shoulder and started searching again for her key. She could feel those amazing eyes regarding her with interest.
“I hope I don’t sound like the guy who just left, but is there any chance you might like to join me for a drink?”
Surprise had her eyes flashing back to him. “Seriously? You’re here by yourself?” Impossible, she thought, for a man who looked as good as he did.
He shrugged a set of impressive shoulders. He was wearing jeans and a crisp white shirt, his hair curling slightly over the collar.
“I needed a break,” he said. “Besides, my brother bought me a plane ticket. I didn’t have much choice. How about that drink?”
She should probably say no. She wasn’t going to give him what he most likely wanted. On the other hand, a guy who looked the way he did wouldn’t have much trouble getting laid.
And she did owe him for coming to her rescue.
Samantha looked up at Nick Brodie and smiled. “You know, after my wrestling match with King Kong a drink really does sound good.”
Nick smiled broadly, all white teeth and sex appeal. The bottom dropped out of stomach. Oh, my. Maybe she was making a mistake.
“What are we waiting for?” Nick said. “Let’s go.”

Nick wasn’t sure why he’d asked her to join him. He wasn’t really looking for female companionship. Or maybe he was, but hadn’t found anyone worth the effort. He’d come to Vegas to get away, see the city that had always intrigued him, relax, maybe gamble a little–not too much.
Samantha winced as she shoved her feet back into her high heel shoes, and he remembered seeing them in the hall in front of her door where she had taken them off and dropped them.
He was afraid he’d scare her if he suggested she open the door, go in and get a different pair, but he wanted her to be comfortable.
“I got a hunch those shoes are hurting like hell. Why don’t I wait for you by the elevator? Give you time to go in and change?”
The smile she gave him was so full of gratitude he figured he’d scored another point–besides the one he’d gotten for pulling that big bastard off her.
She opened her purse, found the key she’d been searching for, flashed it in front the lock and opened the door. “Thanks, Nick. I’ll be right there.”
He frowned. The lady was way too trusting. He could have pushed her inside and done any damn thing he wanted. He thought she would have learned her lesson with the bruiser who’d been manhandling her.
His frown slowly faded, replaced by another smile. In an odd way, he found her naiveté refreshing. Still, if he got a chance, he’d talk to her, make her understand the need to be careful with strangers. Clearly, his cop instincts hadn’t faded, probably never would.
Time ticked past. Standing next to the elevator, he checked his watch. She’d been gone fifteen minutes when he spotted her coming down the hall. She’d changed out of her pale peach linen suit into a short black skirt, pink and black top, and another pair of heels, just as tall but open-toed and apparently more comfortable.
“Thanks for waiting,” she said. “I’ve been working all day. It feels good to get into something that isn’t wrinkled.”
His eyes ran over her. “You look fantastic.” Damned if she didn’t. With her heart-shaped face and warm brown eyes, he’d thought she was attractive. Now he could see she was way more than pretty, with a great figure, curves in all the right places, just a hint of cleavage above the neckline of her blouse. She had taken the clips out of her hair, letting the springy light brown curls that hung down her back tumble softly around her face. He wanted to grab a fistful, to see if it felt as silky as it looked.

GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH AUTHOR,C.J. ELLISSON….

ASCOT MEDIA GROUP AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS…..

C.J. ELLISSON and her Vampire Vacation Inn series!!!

Good morning, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More!!

CJ: Thanks for having me here today! It’s a pleasure to meet your readers and please thank Jeanne for the lovely reviews she did on my books.

MBA&M: Please give our readers insight into C.J. Ellisson.

CJ: Hmm… I never know exactly what people want to know. I’m a happily married mother of two battling multiple autoimmune diseases and several severe bacterial infections.

I had to leave my last job a few years ago because of my health and began writing to save my sanity. I never expected people would want to read my take on sexy vampires—and am continually surprised and humbled by the response the books are receiving.

MBA&M: What is the allure of “vampires” to readers?

CJ: That’s a tricky one! I think for every reader it’s unique. Some may like the deadly, mysterious aspects or the angst-riddled characters Anne Rice produced decades ago, while others may be drawn to the more modern dream-lover in today’s paranormal romance books. I tend to enjoy books that are a mixture of the two—a monster with a mysterious sexual allure.

MBA&M: How many books are in the “V V Inn” series and what order should they be read in, if any?

CJ: There are three books right now, and two free reads containing half of the first two books.

My idea was simple: Give half the book away to make sure the reader truly liked the story and style before buying it. I’d rather do that than risk annoying buyers with the overt eroticism inherent in the first book, and the unique story-telling style in the second one (which is very different than the first book).

Titles in the V V Inn series:

Free Short Story and half of Book One: Just One Taste

Book One: Vampire Vacation (Oct 2010)

Free Read containing half of Book Two: Another Sip

Book Two: The Hunt (June 2011)

Book Three: Big Game (April 2012)

Book Four: The Seduction of Death (due out December 2012)

MBA&M: Who is your favorite character in the “V V Inn” series?

Oooo… so hard to choose… I really love Vivian and Rafe, but some of the secondary characters have grown on me, too. It’s hard not to love a werewolf with a self-deprecating sense of humor who oozes sensuality. Or an ex-military vampire recently turned during a tour in Afghanistan. (It helps that the last character is based on one of my nephews. No, he is not a vampire) 😉

MBA&M: Where did the idea come from for the “V V Inn” series, and how did you decide who would be the hero/heroine and who would be the villain(s)?

CJ: I’d been reading the genre for a very long time. Whether it was called fantasy, horror, romance, or the newest moniker urban fantasy—I read it. I loved the strong heroines and noticed there was a distinct trend – they were the ones who invariably became romantically involved with the powerful, supernatural hero in the story.

I decided if I ever wrote a book it would be with a supernatural female lead and she would be stronger than her mate. The story started to coalesce in my mind little by little, but was still a disjointed dream most of the time.

After a book club meeting one night, a friend asked about my idea—boy, did she got an earful! I’d had my opening line in my head for a while and the overall storyline spilled out as we chatted in my driveway. Turns out she was also a professional editor and loved my concept. She encouraged me to try my hand at writing and helped guide me on the basics.

I knew nothing about plotting a book and just wrote. This friend helped me understand I needed to know where the story was going so I could write toward a goal. Within a few weeks I had my villain mapped out, his motivation, and a meaty story to keep readers involved.

When asked, I tell people the book is not mystery, because that angle of the story is more of a subplot. Nor is it a romance, despite the frequent and detailed sex scenes. If pressed, I try to explain it’s a mix of genres and sits in the fantasy section.

MBA&M:  What is your next project(s)?

CJ: The third full-length novel in the series, Big Game, will release the end of April. After that I’m going to do some shorter novellas for the readers who want to know Jonathan’s story. I plan on completing at least two novellas this year while working on book four, The Seduction of Death, which is slotted to release in December 2012.

I’ve also got a middle-grade book I’m working on for my children under another pen name.

MBA&M: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

CJ: I’m fortunate that one of my dream destinations will happen this summer. My books are based in Alaska and I’m going there on a vampire themed cruise called Vamps at Sea as a guest speaker. It will be so cool to finally see the land I’m writing about in the series.

Aside from my immediate trip, I’d love to travel Asia extensively. I’ve always been fascinated with the rich culture and history of the people. Truth be told, if I had the money, I’d love to visit every continent and see many countries.

MBA&M: What is some of your comfort foods?

CJ: I was diagnosed with Celiac’s a few years ago, so a lot of my favorite comfort foods had to change. I’ve found some decent pasta, which saved me in some regard. I can’t resist a spicy meat sauce at least one night a week!

Side dish favorites would have to include mashed potatoes. And with the addition of Bob Evan’s pre-made mashed potatoes in the grocery store, we have them more often now than is good for my waistline.

MBA&M: What are some of your writing rituals?

CJ: Depends on the day of the week and how I’m feeling. Some days I have memory issues due to the bacterial infections I’m fighting and need to re-read a few recent chapters and my outline before I can begin writing. I like a relatively quiet work place and have been known to chase my husband back down to his office when he’s on a call (He has a booming voice on the phone and we both work from home). Occasionally I’ll put on music or get up and exercise when I feel like I need a rejuvenating push of energy.

Other days the writing flows smoothly and I have a clear grasp on what to write. It’s hit or miss; I take it as it comes.
