SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, WELCOME JULIE…..
JULIE: I’m so excited to be here today for another stop on my Release Me blog tour! Be sure to leave a comment so you’re in the running to win a copy of the book!
Today’s topic ties right in with the book. Release Me is an erotic romance, and I’ve been asked so many times about how difficult it is (or isn’t!) to write the sensual scenes that I thought that would be a great topic to handle today.
Truly, though, the answer may surprise you. Because the scenes aren’t hard to write at all … not so long as the sex flows from the characters’ honest interaction.
The fact is, sex is emotional, intimate, arousing, sometimes funny, sometimes awkward, hopefully mind-blowing. It can be slow or fast, rough or tender. It can bring two people closer or build walls of embarrassment and unfamiliarity. It can release a free spirit, or trap someone in low self-esteem and uncertainty. There are as many possibilities with a sexual scene as there are people, and all those possibilities flow from the way the characters are relating to each other before they actually—how shall we say?—get down to it.
My favorite part of writing sex is the part that comes before. The intimate dance when the characters lead up to consummation. My least favorite part is choreography, because while writing a sex scene is absolutely 100% not about inserting part A into slot B, you still have to get all the body part placement right, otherwise your reader will be left scowling at the page, turning the book this way and that as they wonder how in the world the characters got into that position.
Copyeditors are a real blessing in that regard. But before the copyeditor it helps to have a movie running in your head. I know I do. R or NC-17. Not X, no matter how hot the actual scene might be. Because to my way of thinking, X means it’s about the sex. R and NC-17 means it’s about the characters who, at that moment, are connecting both emotionally and sexually. And that, after all, is what the story should be about.
I hope you check out Release Me! Hard to believe it’s going to be hitting shelves tomorrow!
And be sure to have a safe New Year’s Eve—and I wish you all a wonderful 2013.

For fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You comes an erotic, emotionally charged romance between a powerful man who’s never heard “no” and a fiery woman who says “yes” on her own terms.
He was the one man I couldn’t avoid. And the one man I couldn’t resist.
Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me.Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past—and risk breaking us apart. But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him—and us—forever.
