****My thoughts ****
The Exe’s Revenge  by Jo Jakeman is an interesting debut thriller.  “Originally titled Sticks and Stones”. Ruby, Imogen,  and Naomi
A wickedly dark debut thriller about three women….
Ruby, Imogen,  and Naomi, all three have been involved with the same man,  Phillip Rochester, who was abusive and controlling. The one thing all three have in common, they revenge against him.
A dark and emotional thriller that deals with sensitive issues, domestic violence,  abuse,  secrets, some dark humor, wit, sadness,  and the coming together of three women who become free from their abusive, policeman husband/boyfriend and find a solidarity. Think of the “9 to 5: movie years ago. Traumatic and compelling.  “The Exe’s Revenge” may not compel to all readers,  I found it to be an interesting story, usual and a bit unpredictable.  #NetGalley, #TheExesRevenge, #JoJakeman,

A thought-provoking thriller about artificial intelligence and the self-driving revolution.

You’ll be forced to consider how you’d react if you were cornered

and trapped in a terrifying life-threatening situation.

Fed up with slogging through the treacherous LA traffic to get to work, Jake Bendel and a cunning team of experts create a roadway system for self-driving cars — preventing thousands of traffic deaths and reducing commute times from hours to minutes.

For three months, no traffic congestion. No accidents. No fatalities. People finally feel safe in their cars. But should they?

Especially when the dark side of humanity sees this as a chance to destroy the United States.

A Syrian terrorist group weaponizes the system and devises a scheme to kill more Americans in one day than the 407,000 + U.S. soldiers killed in World War II.

Viktor, a tormented psychopath and the mastermind behind this ruthless attack, is driven by the voices of his dead mother and Allah …who guide his every move.

While he and his brothers mercilessly annihilate Americans in the name of the Jihad, Viktor plants evidence that convinces the public Jake is the architect behind the most heinous terrorist attack in U.S. history.

But one rogue FBI agent believes Jake is innocent. Together they unearth a mole deep inside the FBI, go off the grid, and hash through a trail of hidden clues to stop Viktor from slaughtering millions of unsuspecting American drivers in a matter of minutes.

The clock is ticking. Can they stop him in time to prevent another savage bloodbath?

“A half share of her dowry. Fifty-thousand,” George announced.

Everett snapped around to look at his brother fully. Fifty-thousand pounds would pay the debts and current debts of the farmers and leave enough money to support the estate for a couple of years, until it could pay its own way. “Go on.”

George smirked. “The gossip is she’s from trade, thinks herself some sort of independent woman, and is offering a marriage in name only. Wants to live on the continent, apparently.”

“A marriage of convenience? Very expedient.”

Then she reappeared, gliding right past him. She was resplendent in a dress the color of sunshine, her head tilted back as she waltzed, showing the curve of her neck and the angle of her jaw. Her dark hair gleamed, complemented by the brightness of her dress, as she danced like she was the only person in the room who mattered. Her jaw line was too strong for conventional beauty, but something about the way she held herself was mesmerizing. She was like a cat walking along uneven ground, not perfect, but compelling.

“Exactly.” George had the tone of a vindicated brother. “Miss Alnott is pretty, too. Just over there.”

Reluctant to look away from the dancers, Everett glanced to see whom George indicated. Sensation shot down his spine.

“The lady in the primrose-yellow dress,” George said.

He couldn’t take his gaze from her. Miss Alnott. “I see her.”

“I told you I’d find you a wife.” George turned away. “I’ll be in the card room.”

Oh no. “George—”

“Yes, yes,” he interrupted. “I’m not Peter. I’m not going to gamble everything away.”

George wandered off and Everett gave himself up to watching Miss Alnott moving around the room slowly as she and her partner traversed the floor. She was gathering attention. There were several sharks circling, their fine wool black coats gleaming. The matrons were talking about her, lips pursed with disapproval. Her pronouncement must be the reason for the hum of life in the room.

A fast step in the waltz made the wide skirts of her dress shine. It was a gold dress, really. An unsubtle ploy to give a man the impression she was financially desirable. She certainly looked the part of an aspiring aristocrat, smiling fixedly at the room.

This was the first cut of interest he’d felt since he’d begun his fortune hunting. It would be something to have such a lady for a wife: so beautiful and confident. Of course, if she wanted to live abroad, she wouldn’t be a true wife. But what did it matter? She would be like a wild cat living on the fringes of his estate, untamed and free, but technically his. Wary, coat gleaming, dangerous. If he found a wild cat, he would entice it with cream and take care of it, like he did with everything that was his.

“I suppose you think me selfish to not want to marry a man I neither love nor respect.” Her mouth was tight. “But I refuse to martyr myself by marrying Lord Rayner, when the result would be a totally powerless state after the marriage.”

Ah. Just a vague fear of a bad marriage. It seemed rather superficial to want love more than wanting to stay with family, but hadn’t he been cautious about marrying the wrong person? And as a man, all he had to be concerned about was a lack of conjugal bliss, not actual bodily harm. He was the owner, not the property.

“I can understand wanting love in your marriage.” He let his tone dip as he said the words and was gratified to see an answering visceral reaction in Grace. She flushed. This was where he would link the attraction between them with something more. “You know, love can grow in surprising places.”

Her neck stiffened and she sauntered away, looking deliberately around the room. Everett found he was anticipating her response.

“There are some leaks in this place, I concede. And there are holes in the curtains that let in light. Perhaps there are the prerequisites to grow something in this house.” She swung around to stare down at him. “But Everett, love is not a weed.”

“No, it’s a wildflower.”

MY THOUGHTS

A Mistress for Penndrake by Tammy L. Bailey is an entertaining Regency Romance. Ms. Bailey is a new author, and for a debut author did a great job with this story. I did find it a bit slow at times, predictable, but entertaining, humorous at times, and enjoyed watching the H/H with their witty banter and laugh out loud moments. The heroine is a strong, and feisty. The hero is demanding, and arrogant. Together they made an interesting pair. The banter, struggles and challenges along with the plot pulled this story together nicely. Ms. Bailey’s writing style is interesting and entertaining. Written in third person POV, the revenge part of the hero, needed a bit more telling, some readers may misconstrue the premise or not totally understand. What the hero believed was not a true understanding of the circumstances. Although, both parties were being a bit manipulated, they soon come to terms with their feelings, when they nearly lost it all. Overall, I think this author did a great job, while I felt some things were a bit repetitive, I felt Ms. Bailey pulled off an entertaining and interesting Regency Romance. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. Great job, Tammy L. Bailey! Entertaining and a fun read!

RELEASE DAY BLITZ~ THE THIEF’S COUNTESS~~CECELIA MECCA…with #Review

Happy release day, Cecelia Mecca to My Book Addiction and More, today!!

All of us at MBA&M, wish you a very successful adventure!

Without further ado, meet, Dubut author,  Cecelia Mecca!!

The Border Series is set along the Anglo-Scottish border in the 13th century. Why that time and place?

I’ve always known I wanted to write an English medieval romance. Although I personally read and love Highlander romances, my primary interest has always been in England; I am an unapologetic Anglophile. I thought it might be fun to use the tumultuous border region with divided loyalties between the English and Scottish as a backdrop for the series. As for the time period, I wanted to pre-date the Scottish Wars of Independence since so much has already been written during that time period.

MBA&M: Where do you get your story ideas?

I begin with the history. One detail from a real-life event or person often sparks an entire story.

And the characters?

Again, real-life inspiration is essential. Rather than flush out every aspect of a character, I usually begin with a person I know in mind. From there I conduct a character interview and am continually asking myself what motives the character? What are his/her external and internal goals? How does every action in the book reflect the desire to achieve those goals? I keep a chart of every scene and “fact check” myself against it after each writing session.

How many books will the Border Series include?

This has been the number one question I’ve received thus far. The prequel novella is out now and book one, The Thief’s Countess, has just been released. I’m currently editing book two and have already begun to plot book three, both of which are expected to release in 2017. In addition, there are at least five or six characters already mentioned whose stories I can’t wait to tell. So I don’t see an end to the Border Series any time soon, although I do not currently have a set number of books in mind.

What has been your favorite part of the process so far?

That’s an easy one. Interacting with readers. It’s been so much fun to talk about the characters I’ve lived with for so many years with others. The feedback and support has been almost overwhelming. I began a weekly live video chat on my Facebook page, #MedievalMonday Q&A Giveaway to answer some of the questions I’ve been receiving and reward my amazing readers with goodies along the way. My readers rock!

Blurb

A thief turned reluctant protector… A countess who resents but can’t resist him…

The Reiver

Sir Geoffrey has dedicated his life to exacting revenge on the men who killed his parents and stole his birthright. The son of a baron, he has been reduced to stealing the resources he needs to reclaim his family legacy. Just when he’s on the verge of success, his uncle asks him to put his plans on hold to help protect a wealthy countess. It’s a distraction Geoffrey resents, even more so when he meets Lady Sara. The gorgeous, complicated and alluring lady is everything he’d want in a woman—and everything he can’t have.

The Countess

With her betrothed coming to claim her hand in marriage and a distant cousin intent on usurping her earldom, Lady Sara Caiser feels beset by controlling, unwanted men. As if that weren’t enough, her father’s deathbed request was for two lawless border reivers to serve as her protectors. Despite her misgivings, an undeniable attraction pulls her into Sir Geoffrey’s arms. The man she thought nothing more than a thief is more dangerous than she believed, for he’s noble, caring and sinfully attractive. As the threats against her continue to mount, Sara must decide what’s more important—her duty or her heart.

You can purchase The Thiefs Countess on Amazon for $2.99. A limited-time special edition includes chapter upgrades, similar to “DVD extras. The upgrades will expires in two weeks.

Author Biography

A former English teacher, Cecelia combines two of her passions, romance novels and the middle ages, in debut novel The Thief’s Countess. Combining alpha male types and strong female heroines, Cecelia transports readers to an admittedly romanticized time of knights and castles. She lives in Northeast, Pennsylvania with her husband and two young children where she can be found either planning a Disney trip, watching period dramas or convincing her children to watch Star Wars. She is firmly House Stark and Gryffindor.

Hart’s Desire is set just prior to the War of 1812, when privateers sailed the seas looking for enemy merchant ships to plunder. Hart’s Desire is a story about a young woman from England, who’s suddenly thrust into plantation life as the daughter of the plantation owner. Hart’s Desire is rich with fascinating insights into the Low Country of Charleston, the food, the medicines and the lifestyles of the people of that time. Weeks earlier the merchant fleet owner, Landon’s mentor, set up a mysterious appointment with George Grey of Twin Pines plantation-Keelan’s father. It is this meeting which forces Landon and Keelan’s paths to cross.

Keelan has been well-tutored by her father’s valet, and not only can she read, write and keep the accounts for the plantation, but she can also fence and defend herself with a dagger. Romance readers will love this spunky heroine and the scoundrel who can’t help but fall in love with her.

MY THOUGHTS:

Hart’s Desire #1 of a new series, “Pirates & Petticoats” by debut author, Chloe Flowers is an interesting Western Historical Romance set in early 1800’s Charlestown, South Carolina, prior to the Revolutionary War. A great debut for Ms. Flowers!
A possibility of war with Great Britain is looming in the forefront of everyone’s mine, the characters are intriguing and intense.
Steady paced, well developed characters and an intriguing storyline makes for some engaging entertainment. With some swashbuckling action, secrets galore, deception, revenge, an assassin on the loose and death bed secrets revealed, readers will find a exciting read.
Ms. Flowers has written vivid descriptions and details, which I felt at times a bit too much, however, they brought the story more to life. The heroine, was a bit immature, carekess, and reckless, playing with the affections of two young men, which could find herself in true trouble. However, her mother has died in the past two years, she has lost a couple of family members under mysterious circumstances, her father’s health is feeling, she’s been uprooted, not only to a new place but a new country entirely, and there is an overbearing, hateful and jealous cousin. Has an assassin followed them to America? Definitely a difficult, stressful time in a nineteen year old’s life. The hero, is seeking an audience with the heroine’s father, a disgraced, and court marshaled commandore, whose health is failing, mysteriously.

The cast of characters in “Hart’s Desire” is impressive and engaging. A unique storyline filled with many mysteries and tragedies.

Exciting and adventurous storytelling with many twists and turns.
Be warned not all questions are answered, in fact, many are left unanswered. I would say, the reader is left with cliffhangers. A continuing saga, to be sure. Which I most definitely look forward to continuing.
However, even with this, it is a very enjoyable, enticing and satisfying read. Ms. Flowers is an author to follow. The reader will need to read the next installment for sure, to solve some of the mysteries of “Hart’s Desire”.
Received for an honest review. However, all opinions and thoughts are my own.

Excerpt:

DBMichaels_SongOfTheBlackbird_HR-2Julien began rattling off some names. Thank goodness Sam wasn’t one of them. At least not this time, but had he been ill before? They’d always been close. Something horrible must have happened to him. Maybe he’d been beaten up and lay hurt somewhere all these months. But then Emma remembered the 308-35U. Surely if he was hurt, they wouldn’t have assigned him to a dorm?

One of the side doors to the conference room opened and several inmate workers lifting large boxes entered. One carried two huge boxes. His face was partially obscured but when he turned, her heart almost stopped. That uplifted nose, the frizzy hair, the lanky build. She squeezed her eyes shut and snapped them open again, sure her mind was playing tricks on her. But no. There he was. He turned and suddenly caught her eye. His whole body stiffened. That was it, a momentary tenseness. Nothing else. No smile, no spark of recognition. He put the boxes on the cart and followed the group of inmates out the door.

“Excuse me.” Emma hastily stood. “Sorry. I’ll be right back.”

She rushed to the door, registering Chambers’s and Kaye’s identical expressions of disapproval. But what did it matter? She’d seen Sam. Her darling, beloved Sam. She flung the door open. Where the heck were they? They couldn’t have gone far. She darted down the corridor, turned left, and caught a glimpse of blue going around the next corner. She ran after them. There they were, exiting the building farther down the hall.

Emma rushed outside. The four inmate workers stood in a single line near the locked gate she’d entered with Julien awhile back. Their supervisor opened the gate with his set of keys. They were at least fifty yards away but Emma had no problem identifying Sam. His gait was the same. The usual swing to the arms and the mild dragging of his left foot. Courtesy of his cursed father who’d started this nightmare. Sam never turned around as the group disappeared from sight. Either he was mad at her or maybe he’d lost his memory? Had he had a concussion from some head trauma? He had to know her. There must be a reason for him to ignore her like that.

Suddenly, a blackbird’s call rang in the air. On-ke-kaaangh. On-ke-kaaangh. Then a short pause and another. On-ke-kaaangh. On-ke-kaaangh. Sam’s voice definitely.

Emma’s heart soared. She put her hand to her mouth and prayed she still remembered. “On-ke-kaaangh. On-ke-kaaangh.”

It didn’t come out as polished as when they’d practiced it long ago camping in the woods but it was enough. Dear God, it was enough. Tears rushed behind her eyes as the familiar birdcall echoed back to her. She swallowed several times and wiped the wetness from her cheeks. She’d found her brother at last.

The rake's handbook

Welcome, Sally!!

MBA&M: Why write in this time period?

England under Regency rule took place from 1811 to 1821. Now the time period between 1795 and 1837 is considered the greater Regency-era (Wikipedia) as typified by progress in English architecture, industry, politics, and culture. During this time, much of the technical advances that laid the foundation for our modern world took place. So I use these men as my heroes, because they impress my nerd-girl heart more than an aristocrat who inherited his title ever could.

MBA&M: What was the most difficult scene to write?

The most difficult scenes or extended parts to write are the ones that reveal a growing meeting of the minds between the hero and heroine. The greatest sexual organ is the brain, so it’s a difficult dance to create the growing intellectual connection between two people.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite character to write, including the secondary characters? Why?

Easy peasy, the hero will always be my favorite character to write. The hero in The Rake’s Handbook: Including Field Guide is a kind, generous, and very naughty man. His sexual innuendo and sense of humor was a blast to write.
MBA&M: What freaks you out more. creature/animal, words/language, or food?

Please, tell us all your hidden fears.

ALL my fears? Hmm, I’m probably not aware of half of them. But I do fear stupidity. Or should I say a lack of understanding the facts. Some people nowadays get their information from TV shows that are based on opinion, no matter what political side you are on. I think that leads to divisiveness instead of cooperation. Oh, and I fear watermelon. Hate it! I’m probably the only person on the plant that does. Eww.

Thank you, Sally, for spending time with us and our readers today!

~~Congratulations on your latest release~~

The rake's handbook

The Rake’s Handbook (Including Field Guide) by Sally Orr (Historical Romance; The Rake’s Handbook, Book 1; ISBN: 9781492602118)

Summary:

The definitive guide to seduction…

The Rake’s Handbook was written on a dare, and soon took the ton by storm. Now its author, Ross Thornbury, is publicly reviled by the ladies—who are, of course, forbidden to read the handbook—but privately revered by the gentlemen. Unfortunately, Ross’s notoriety is working against him and he flees London painfully aware of the shortcomings of his own jaded heart.

Spirited young widow Elinor Colton lives next to Ross’s country estate. She’s appalled not only by his rakish reputation, but also by his progressive industrial plans. Elinor is sure she is immune to Ross’s seductive ways. But he keeps coming around…impressing her with his vision for England’s future and stunning her with his smiles.

How does one resist the man who wrote the manual on love?

Sally Orr Author PhotoAbout the Author:

Sally Orr worked for thirty years in medical research, specializing in the discovery of gene function. After joining an English history message board, she posted many, many examples of absolute tomfoolery. As a result, a cyber-friend challenged her to write a novel. Since she is a hopeless Anglophile, it’s not surprising that her first book is a Regency romance. Sally lives with her husband in San Diego, surrounded by too many nerdy books and not enough old English cars.

The rake's handbook***

Excerpt:

“You really are a rake,” she whispered, the sight and feel of their joined hands warming her cheeks. “A proper gentleman would never hold a lady thus. I have been warned about your charms. Perhaps I too should write everything down. Pen a handbook to instruct my widowed sisters what to expect upon attempted seduction and how to fight it.” “Factual or satirical?” She bit her lower lip to stop an indelicate reply. “I could write that handbook too.” His boast made her smile. “I seem to have found another trait of a rake.” “Humph. I’d be delighted to show you all of my traits. Perhaps start with chapter one?” The determination in his voice indicated he was quite willing to comply. “Please do, sir,” she replied in a facetious tone, tugging her hand free. “But I can already tell that I’ll stop reading your book after the table of contents. You know, all of those funny pages in the front of the book numbered v and i.” He chuckled softly, then stared at her until he captured her gaze. “My handbook starts with fine eyes.” He reached up and swept back a ringlet that had fallen over her eye and carefully tucked the curl under her bonnet. Her heartbeat raced. “The eyes are followed by a notable vee.” His gaze lowered to the upper edge of her bodice and lingered in the center. “Oh my, if that’s the table of contents, I don’t dare read chapter one.” “I’d be pleased to read you all of the chapters. There are a total of . . .” He glanced at her leisurely, from the top of her leghorn bonnet down to her sensible half boots. His focus returned up to her neck—almost. His chest broadened as he inhaled. “Ten.” “Ten.” He gave her a smoldering look from under heavy lashes. “Ten in volume one,” he continued in a silky baritone. “Let’s start with chapter one.” He leaned forward slowly, staring at her mouth, as if he might take liberties and kiss her. The distance between them shortened to inches. Close enough to feel his warm breath.

MY THOUGHTS:

THE RAKE’S HANDBOOK: INCLUDING FIELD GUIDE by Sally Orr is an interesting Regency Historical Romance. #1 in “The Rake’s Handbook” series,  and what a beginning!  You gotta love a sensual, humorous hero and a widow whose still in love with her husband. How unique! We usually see widows, who can’t wait to be a widow, but in “The Rake’s Handbook”, we have a widow who actually loved her husband.

A light-hearted Regency, that will have you laughing out loud at times, as well as a some serious themes. Elinor Colton and Ross Thornbury are not looking for love per say, but what they find is unique, and magical.  Oh, Ross also wrote the “Rake’s Handbook” and can’t seem to live it down.

An interesting tale of second chances, with the right blend of romance and humor. “The Rake’s Handbook” explores the relationship between Ross and Elinor with humor, sexual chemistry and drama with a bit of danger, outside influences to keep the couple apart, and some nefarious characters along the way.

While, this is Ms. Orr first novel, I don’t feel it will be her last. She is a writer to watch for in the future. With her humor and drama, anyone would enjoy this tale of finding love and a HEA. A solid  beginning to a debut author and a new series!

TheLongestNightSummary

Years ago, former Marine Captain Cecily Knight fled her dark past and the nightmares forever haunting her nights. Alone in the remote Canadian wilderness, she survives day to day…until Ian Fairchild comes storming into her life and shatters her protective seclusion.

Aloof but intriguing, defensive but undeniable, Ian is everything Cecily shouldn’t want but can’t ignore. He watches her with shrewd blue eyes, as if determined to decipher her secrets…and for the first time in years, she finds herself coming alive beneath the hands of a man with too many scars to count.
As the hushed and harsh winter closes in around them, two lost souls find themselves on the precipice of a love that could save their lives…or destroy them forever.

Excerpt

Cecily shifted her weight, and Ian caught her sleeve, silently cursing the bulky jackets and gloves that separated them both. At the touch, she went still, saying, “Ian—“

“Cecily,” he interrupted quietly. He wanted to pull away her sunglasses, but he sensed that she needed that little artificial shield. If Ian pushed too hard, she would shut down completely, and he might never get another chance at her. Even this might be too much, but Ian had to try.

Lightly holding her sleeve, he raised his free hand and used his teeth to tug off the glove. Her head turned sharply to watch the path of the glove as Ian tossed it aside. Cold air bit at his fingers, but he didn’t care. He set his fingertips to her face, for an instant feeling the icy skin of her jaw before she flinched away.

“Cecily,” Ian repeated quietly, soothingly, and touched again. This time, she didn’t pull back. She parted her lips and inhaled quietly. The motion drew his gaze down, and he saw no reason at all not to chase that breath.

Tight with tension, her lips tasted of cold and snow. Subtle, burning point of contact connected them skin-to-skin—Ian’s fingertips on her face, his thumb on the thinner flesh over her cheekbone, their lips touching lightly The kiss was barely more than the air they shared for one breath, two. Her exhale shuddered against his mouth.

This love of all things wordy has never left her. A voracious reader, her tastes cross all genres. Her first experience with romance was as a child devouring copious amount of fairy tales. As her reading tastes evolved, she discovered something special–a book has the capacity to make her heart beat as if falling in love the first time.
