What should a woman do when sparks fly in the kitchen?  Ignite the fire!  Especially if it’s a man as sexy as businessman Chet Castle creating the friction. 🙂

Author Christine Warner has created a recipe for romance that’s spicy hot in her debut novel Bachelor’s Special that you don’t want to miss!  And her blog tour is just around the corner, running June 10th through July 5th, 2013.

So without further ado, here is, Christine!

Today I’d like to discuss hero names—actually I want to do more than discuss—but we’ll get to that in a minute. First we have to do a little background info so you will hopefully get to know me and that’ll help you understand where I’m coming from. I’ve been reading romance for decades and loving every minute of it. Of course it seemed a natural part of my evolution to write romance—so here I am J During my many years as an avid reader there are certain things about each story I’ve read that jump out at me and either grab my attention or lose it.

One thing that will lose me is if the hero has a name that doesn’t conjure up images of a super sexy strong man.  After all, a lot of the reason we read romance is to fantasize about the hero–am I wrong?  I think not :)

Now play along…close your eyes and picture yourself at the beach with Mr. Hot-and-Sexy.  The sun and heat pounding off the glistening muscles of his toned, bulging biceps and you want nothing more than for him to grab you in a steamy embrace and crush his mouth to yours.  He’s in a sexy pair of black swim trunks that show off more than you bargained for.  His defined abs rippling and teasing you whenever he talks or laughs—and his broad chest is perfect to shield you from stray bullets or to rest your head upon as you’re dozing off to sleep after a movie and popcorn night.  You pull yourself out of your fantasy, your gaze drifts up to the perfect swell of his lower lip, just before his head lowers to brush his mouth against yours—you murmur his name—“Lester.”

Story over…wah wah wah!

There are just some names which can blow that whole image.  And it’s not that all of these names I’m going to share with you are horrible, but some names just shouldn’t be used in romance.  Most of the time I think it comes down to name association. And of course character names are author’s choice. For instance, in Bachelor’s Special my heroes name is Chet Castle. I love the name Chet. I think of strong, sexy and all the hottie goodness that goes along with any hero. YUM!

Now, my sister doesn’t care for the name Chet and she tried repeatedly to get me to change it. Lol But I stuck to my guns because, well, Chet was Chet and he was my hero already.

Here is my list of the top ten worst names to give your hero…and I cheated toward the end by pairing them up….hehehe.  (Disclaimer…if you know or love someone with one of these names, and they are every bit the hero in your eyes…I mean no disrespect…lol…this is for fun and all based on my opinion only).

*Linus…yes, I read a delicious romance recently where the hero was named Linus and every time his name appeared on the page it pulled me out of the story.  All I could think of was the Peanuts cartoon…lol

*Lester…no need to elaborate :)

*Jody…for some reason names that aren’t gender specific don’t make me think sexy hero thoughts…if you have one that you think does, please share

*Henry…though I do have a fondness for the name Hank…it conjures up images of a hunky cowboy on horseback…and is actually the name of one of my heroes in a WIP…and yes he’s a cowboy

*Gaylord…this is another name in a romance book I read, and I’m sorry, but when it came to the all important love scene, I just couldn’t get past her moaning that name…lol

*Harry…I don’t mind the name in the Harry Potter series, just not in a romance

*Ron…Okay, I admit it, this is more personal.  I had a boyfriend from years ago named Ron and we parted on bad terms…lol

*Alexander…I like the name, but I just think it’s been overused in the romance genre

*Lucien and Damien…these 2 rank the same for me.  I’ve never met anyone with either name, but they don’t make me think hero, they make me think villain.

*Byron and Bartholomew…not drool-worthy or sigh inducing names, even though I know they are popular in historicals…sorry :)

Tell me, what hero names have you read in a romance book that pulled you from the story and made you scratch your head in wonder?

Looking forward to your answers!

Thank you,Christine, for stopping by today with your impressive list of hero worst names. I must admit I feel the same about some of the names you listed.

Bachelor’s Special Blurb:

Saute, simmer, and flambé…

Jill Adgate wants three things from life: a successful catering business, the devoted love of an exceptional man, and a family. What she has is no job, a mounting pile of bills, and her outspoken best friend—who sets her up on a blind date with the man who inadvertently ruined Jill’s life.

Chet Castle is a prosperous businessman who has everything, except the ability to trust. Burned by a money-hungry fiancée, he refuses to get involved with any relationship that has a shelf life longer than a head of lettuce.

Intrigued by her ambition—and determined to get her in bed—Chet offers Jill the chance of a lifetime: Work for him for the next eight weeks as his live-in chef and he’ll help her get her catering business off the ground. When sparks fly in the kitchen, Jill realizes what’s cooking with her commitment-phobic employer is a recipe for disaster…but it’s just too tasty to not take a bite.

The excerpt I’m sharing has a little taste from both Jill and Chet’s perspective. ENJOY!

Her body hummed as his smile wavered. Although he wore

sunglasses, she’d bet her last dollar his gaze swept across her chest,

lingering on the betrayal of her pert nipples pushing against the

fabric of her suit.

Until this moment, shyness had never been a trait she

possessed. Air stalled in her lungs, her palms grew sweaty, and

she itched to cover herself with a towel. Even though her replica

vintage swimsuit hid more than most sets of women’s underwear,

she felt too exposed. She turned to the side slightly and folded her

legs up. Not that it helped, but it made her feel a bit less exposed.

Chet slid his feet from his sandals, brushing a hand through

his hair. The heat from the sun wasn’t the only thing scorching her

skin. She trickled several droplets of water over her arms, but she

couldn’t drag her focus from his toned flesh.

Jill soaked in his ripped abs and the obvious package of

goodies covered by his brown swimsuit—the same sexy brown as

his hair. Damn, did a man have a right to fill out a pair of swimming

trunks like that? Flecks of hair, just enough to give him a manly

appeal, covered the etched muscles of his long, tan legs.

She licked her lips, hoping she could still speak. “Do you want

some privacy?” Yes, say yes. She needed an excuse to make an

escape without coming off like someone desperate to be making

an exit.

Hell no, he didn’t want privacy. Through the shield of his sunglasses,

he inspected her body from the tips of her pink-painted toenails

to the top of her brightly flowered swimming cap. Did people still

actually wear those things? “No, you look comfortable. Stay and

enjoy the day.”

“Oh…are you sure?”

Amazed at his own ability to talk without his tongue hitting

the cement, Chet turned to throw his towel and sunglasses on a

nearby lounge chair. Damn.

The red and white polka-dot halter-style suit featured a tight

bodice, but her slender hips and shapely thighs hiding beneath

a matching skirt grabbed his attention until all oxygen left his

blood. Even showing less skin than the average girl on the beach,

she far exceeded sexy and alluring.

Get a grip, Castle. She’s off limits, no matter how delectable.

He turned and stepped onto the diving board. He bounced

along the surface as he made his way over the water. When he

looked at Jill’s bathing cap covering her head, he held back his

grin. The neon rubber flowers reminded him of something his

grandmother would’ve worn, but there the similarity ended.

Everything beneath that cap was far from making him think of

SEAL of Honor

By Tonya Burrows

It’s a good thing Gabe Bristow lives and breathes the Navy SEAL credo, “the only easy day was yesterday,” because today, his life is unrecognizable. When his prestigious career comes to a crashing halt, he’s left with a bum leg and few prospects for employment that don’t include a desk.

That is, until he’s offered the chance to command a private hostage rescue team and free a wealthy American businessman from Colombian paramilitary rebels. It seems like a good deal—until he meets his new team: a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic, and an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses. Oh, and who could forget the sexy, frustratingly impulsive Audrey Van Amee? She’s determined to help rescue her brother—or drive Gabe crazy. Whichever comes first.

As the death toll rises, Gabe’s team of delinquents must figure out how to work together long enough to save the day. Or, at least, not get themselves killed. Because Gabe’s finally found something worth living for, and God help him if he can’t bring her brother back alive.

Tonya Burrows | Writing has always been my one true love. I wrote my first novel-length story in 8th grade and haven’t stopped since. I received a B.A. in creative writing from SUNY Oswego and I’m now working on a MFA in popular fiction at Seton Hill University.

When I’m not writing, I spend my time reading, painting (badly), exploring new places, and enjoying time with my family. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let’s be honest, I’ll take a bad horror movie too!) I’m a geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.

I share my life with two dogs and a ginormous cat. We live in a small town in PA, but I suffer from a bad case of wanderlust and usually end up moving someplace new every few years. Luckily, my animals are all excellent travel buddies.

Victoria1What is the allure of historical erotic romance?

VICTORIA:To me, history is incredibly sexy and the allure of erotic historical is three fold: There is a strong fantasy element to historical with the elegant clothes, the formal manners, the rigid social etiquette. Sex outside marriage, (and even within the marriage bed, if performed without the goal of procreation), was forbidden fruit. All of this combines to create a certain mystique and is a wonderful backdrop for a sensual story.

What is the allure of seduction and innocence? This is a theme that I obviously love!

VICTORIA:In the context of a historical romance I think the allure of a premeditated seduction is that it’s like a game of chess with a winner and a loser- especially since the rake must employ a certain strategy to accomplish his ends. This was no easy feat in the 18th and 19th centuries as genteel young ladies were not allowed ever to be alone with a gentleman without a chaperone. Getting the girl alone often required some true scheming on the part of the would-be seducer.

abreachofpromise 200X300In my debut erotic historical romance, A Breach of Promise, Marcus sets out to seduce Lydia  when she decides to break off their betrothal after waiting six years for him to follow through. His first attempt to dissuade her has interesting results which forces him to take more drastic measures:

“A drink, Needham,” Marcus demanded. “Perhaps I should make it an entire bottle. I have great need of something particularly…numbing.” The two men repaired to the library where Marcus dismissed the footman and helped himself to a generous glass of whiskey.

“Sorry, ol’ chap. Though I suspected she would be more immune to your charm than you believed, I’d have never imagined you’d take it so hard.”

Hard? An interesting choice of words,” Marcus said. “I can’t remember such a cock stand since you and I pooled our allowance to hire our first whore.”

Nicholas’ brows shot up. “I am uncertain how to interpret that very enlightening bit of information.”

“It means I want her, Nick. She has the body of Venus and the innate sensuality of Voluptus and I want her so badly my bloody teeth ache.” He emptied his glass in one long draught and refilled it again. He offered the bottle to Nick who demurred.

“But she still won’t have you, eh?”

Marcus regarded Nick with a self-satisfied smirk. “Oh, I think she’ll have me all right. She melted like chocolate and damned well tasted like it too.”

“So progress was made in your, er, negotiations?”

“Yes and no,” Marcus answered with a wry twist of his lips. “She’s responsive as hell, far more than I would have anticipated, but fighting it like the devil too. I think she’s scared of her own passion.”

“An interesting dilemma.”

“A bloody frustrating one.” Marcus took another drink. “I’ve tried reason. I’ve tried charm. She still wishes to call it off. It’s time for more drastic measures.”

Nick gave him an inquiring look.

“I’ll ruin her, Nick, and when I’m done, she’ll be too damned sated to care. All I need is to get her alone.”

In The Devil You Know, book #3 in my DeVere series, Ludovic, Viscount DeVere has tired of his mistress, Caroline, when the unwary Diana enters the picture. Although Diana is a respectable married woman, DeVere is determined to have her. When he employs the full measure of his charm, she is helpless to resist. (I doubt there is a woman breathing who could!)

Mini excerpt:

Annalee prompted Diana forward. “My Lord DeVere, may I present to you my cousin, the Baroness Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley.”

His gaze of cobalt-blue met hers, and Diana’s smile froze on her face, an unfamiliar and unsettling frisson of physical awareness sweeping over her as he took her in from head to toe in a swift, and by his show of strong white teeth, appreciative appraisal. For a woman who took pride in her self-possession, she was strangely discomposed when he raised her fingers to his lips, his thumb skillfully settling on the bare expanse of skin just above her glove, setting her pulse skittering.

“Baroness.” The timbre of his voice, the curve of his lips, was fraught with meaning, sending a jolt of heat to a place low in her belly. He gave a shallow bow that set his gaze on a horizontal plane with her breasts and lingered there much longer than proper, his eyes flickering like a blue flame. Her nipples tightened, contracting against her layers of muslin and silk, sending a tiny tremor rippling over her. Without having uttered a word beyond her name, the portentous weight of an indecent proposition hung between them.

Another snippet -later that evening:

Caroline flicked a scathing look over Diana’s gown. “A daring cut for a woman of your proportions. I shall have a footman fetch you a shawl. One would hate for you to catch a chill.”

“I am perfectly comfortable,” Diana replied.

“You needn’t trouble yourself, Caroline,” DeVere interjected. “As host, my guests’ comfort is my concern.” He turned to Diana with a burning look that made her pulse skitter. “Should you later grow chilly, dear lady, you need only whisper the word, and I shall command every hearth in this monstrosity be lit. I would rather set my entire house aflame than cover such a magnificent…” His gaze raked over Diana’s bosom with an appreciative gleam. “…gown.”

TreacherousTemptation 450X675

Lastly, in Treacherous Temptations, Hadley sets out to seduce the innocent Mary as a means of revenge as well as to secure her vast fortune:

“Your sigh betrays you, Miss Edwardes.”

“Was it really aloud?” She hadn’t realized she’d given away her thoughts.

“Sweet and sad, it was. I have failed to divert you. Perhaps I should have thought of something else.”

“It’s not that—” she turned to protest but stopped when he brushed the corner of her mouth with his thumb. Her gaze widened as he inspected it with a half-smile.

“A vestige of jam tart, I believe. But alas,” he gave a helpless shrug. “I have no napkin.” Before she realized what he was about, he brushed her lips in a feathery kiss, lingering at the corner of her mouth, where his tongue flicked out to taste her. The unexpectedness of it stunned her. “Lord Hadley! Wh-what are you doing?”

“If you have to ask, I must be losing my touch. Perhaps I should try again?”

Still too dazed to formulate a response, he took advantage to steal another kiss, this one as soft as the sigh that escaped her lungs. He increased the pressure then, slanting his heavenly mouth and lightly nibbling her lower lip. His kiss was warm and soft and wonderful, making her forget she was supposed to protest.

“You are deliciously sweet, Mary, like ripe strawberries, but now I have taken a taste of you, I only want more.”

“Please,” escaped her lips.

Was it a protest or a plea? She wasn’t sure. If the former, it was feeble even to her own ears. How easily… how eagerly… she had capitulated to him…and far worse…how desperately she wanted more.

“Please?” he repeated. “Please stop, or please kiss you again?”

“No.” She averted her head with what he surely knew was a toothless protest. His manner was far too familiar, far too intimate. She knew she shouldn’t permit him any more liberties, but good heavens!

“Come now, Mary.” He turned her bodily back to him, his warm gaze seeking hers, his honeyed voice cajoling. “It’s only a kiss, after all.”

Only a kiss?

Perhaps he had no idea how devastating a kiss could be…or mayhap he knew exactly what it did to her. “Perhaps this is normal for you, my lord, but I am an unsophisticated girl and unaccustomed to casual kisses.”

“No? Then perhaps it’s past time you became accustomed. Shall I really kiss you, sweet Molly? Truly and thoroughly?”

Was this the course of a seduction? Is this what he had planned all along? She searched his face for the answer only to lose herself in his blue eyes. Fear gripped her. Not of him, but of her weakening will. “Don’t,” she whispered.

He muted her protest with his mouth, catching her breath and replacing it with his own. This kiss was different, paradoxically soft and firm, it demanded a response that she was helpless to deny. Mary closed her eyes, responding and melting into him as he nipped, and licked, and suckled her lips. Like a vortex, he pulled her into the kiss, stealing the air from her lungs, along with any remaining will. His warm slick tongue teased, gently urging her to open. When she parted, just a fraction, he took command. He entered her mouth deeply, seeking, exploring with his smooth, wet tongue, the contact of which instantly sent a flood of warm moisture between her thighs.

Only a kiss?

It was staggering.

Her mind was lost to time and place, as if nothing existed beyond his divine mouth. He discarded her bonnet and tangled his fingers in her hair. She whimpered, clutching at his lapels, yet he refused to relent. Mercilessly, he intensified the kiss, pulling her so far in; submerging her in so much sensation that Mary thought she would drown in the pleasure of it.

Cindi Madsen Official Author PhotoAbout Cindi Madsen:Cindi Madsen sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children.

“Our Thoughts” on this title.

We hope you have enjoyed our spotlight today! Please spread the word!

Hi, April. Thanks for having me here at My Book Addiction and More.
My new novella from Entangled, Melting the Millionaire’s Heart, is a bit of an odd beast. Although it’s a sexy, lighthearted story, it has a serious backdrop. The heroine, Kayla, is a teacher at a private school for special needs kids: kids with intellectual disabilities, autism, ADHD, fetal alcohol syndrome, and psychiatric disorders. She’s on her way to a remote rural estate to schmooze a wealthy potential donor to the school when she wrecks her car in a snowstorm. Things take an interesting turn when she’s rescued by a good-looking stranger.
My inspiration for the story came from a very unlikely source: the many websites and blogs for parents of special needs kids. My son has ADHD, but we’ve been very lucky. His academics haven’t really been affected and he’s done well in a mainstream public school. Many parents aren’t so fortunate. I’ve read many stories over the years of parents struggling through public schools, 504 plans and individual education plans (meant to address a child’s special needs), homeschooling, expensive private schools, sometimes thinking they would never find a good fit for their child. I was inspired one day reading the story of one such mother whose adopted son suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome, a particularly devastating (and totally preventable) disability. After years of struggle, they found a small private school that worked with her son in small groups, based on his ability, not age, and provided the emotional and behavioral support he needed. I wished such schools were easier to find and easier to afford for all children who can’t thrive in a traditional school. I wrote about such a school, Horizons, that existed in my imagination. But like any such school, it doesn’t run for free. It needs money to pay the bills. That was the inspiration for Dr. Dunne, the driven principal who is always looking to suck up to wealth if it means a donation to Horizons. My hero Ryan is one such wealthy potential donor. He’s caught between his genuine desire to help kids in need and his intense dislike of being used for his money.
Kayla is much the same: She would do anything to help her students, but she’s turned off by the succession of donors who give money to the school only to buff their public image, not because they care anything about kids. When these two characters come together, sparks fly!
Interestingly enough, my editor at Entangled bought the story in part because she loved its realistic depiction of kids with special needs, something I take a lot of pride in. Until recently, kids with special needs have been practically invisible in popular culture. The character of Max, a boy with Asperger’s Syndrome, on Parenthood is a notable exception. I’m hoping to do a small part to change that, not only in “Melting the Millionaire’s Heart,” but in its follow-up, which I’m writing now.

Special-needs teacher Kayla Johnston writes off any shot at New Year’s Eve romance when she’s summoned to a fundraising event for her school at the remote estate of a wealthy would-be-donor. But when a massive snowstorm hits and Kayla careens off the road, the sexy stranger who rescues her brings to mind cozy fireplaces and steamy midnight kisses…among other things.

Reclusive entrepreneur Ryan Langford may be missing his own fundraiser, but being marooned in a cabin with Kayla beats ducking a room full of people after his money any day. Too bad she’s so irritated with the ” gazillionaire” who ruined her New Year’s Eve that he feels like he has to lie about his identity. But when the sparks fly and they fall into each other’s arms, Ryan knows he’s made a big mistake. Will she be able to trust him once the snow melts and the truth comes out?
