 My Thoughts:

The Gambler Wages Her Baron by Christina McKnight is an emotional conclusion to “Craven House series”. But can be read as a stand alone.

Well crafted with charming and engaging characters.  A gentleman of ice meets a lady with a warm heart and gambling issues, in this compelling and emotional story. The storyline is filled with heartbreak, brokenness, struggles, learning to trust, and finding a second chance at love. The children just added to this fabulous story.  Payton  Samuels and Damon Kinder, Lord Ashford are a fascinating couple, the chemistry between causes sparks to fly off the pages. Emotional roller coaster but well worth the time to read. Another must read by the talented Christina McKnight!

A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing forever.
An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered, especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance—and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder—Maggie’s father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail—Maggie must marry a man she’s never met. To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander

TO WIN HER FAVOR by Tamera Alexander is another enticing Historical Romance by this author set during the post-Civil War era. “A Belle Meade Plantation Novel” Book 2, but can be read as a stand alone.

Meet, Maggie Linden, a gifted rider and Cullen McGrath, an Irishman from England and a horse named, “Bourbon Belle”. A southern Lady and an Irishman, their attraction particularly, sizzles off the pages of “To Win Her Favor” with tension and passion.

Their story captures the tragedy and drama of life during the post-Civil War era. All the drama, tragedy, a marriage of convenience, an attraction between two head strong characters, faith, healing, scandal, racial discrimination, horses, romance, and the power of love.

A tale that is a heartwarming romance charged with tension and passion and so much more. Readers will not be able to put “To Win Her Favor” down. This story was a WOW moment for me! I love Ms. Alexander’s epic Romance, and this was no exception. It was hard to put down. A mesmerizing tale of love, forgiveness, overcoming obstacles, horse racing and the power of faith and love. The writing was fantastic, with well developed, engaging and enduring characters. The storyline was well thought out, mesmerizing, and an absolute delight to read. Another hit for this author! A definite must read for anyone and all fans of Inspirational Historical Romance, horse racing, Post- Civil War era, and just an awesome Romance. Another WOW, moment!!

A tribute to a different kind of Jersey girl.

In New Jersey during the summer of 1989, an awkward thirteen-year-old who was obsessed with weird music fell head-over-heels in love with the coolest post-punk rock girl he had ever met.

Nicholas was insecure. He was a daydreamer, wishing for romance when he was told, over and over, that he could not have it. He was a toy, pulled and pushed, wanted and used, dragged along yet held at a distance. Nicholas fell in with the out crowd, and loved every minute of it. He fell in love and got left behind, but not before she changed him forever.

This is an irrational, emotional love story for the teenager inside all of us.

The music is loud, and you’re about to be pushed into the pit.

What some people are saying…

“I should have put you in therapy.” – my mother

“I insist that you use my real name.” – Kevin

“Finally, a title that doesn’t scare people off. Not like the first book, The Coolest
Way to Kill Yourself.” – Kim Gray, publicist

Foreword by Wendy Buck

Three months after I read Nicholas’ first book, The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself, my thirteen-year-old daughter, M, told me she was a lesbian. I did not know Nicholas before reading his first book, but he has since become a close friend and confidant. I shared M’s news with him and his response was that I had to write a foreword for his next book. I asked him for the correlation between her announcement and his book, because I didn’t get it. And I fought him on it. What does being gay have in common with being punk rock? He told me to think about the term in a non-music sort of way. What does it represent? And so I did what I always do. I went away and I thought about what he said. Chipped Black Nail Polish takes place when I was a teenager, during the height of punk rock. As so many of us did, I promised myself I would never grow up to be one of those adults who forgot where she came from. Themusic was important, but more than that, what punk rock stood for took center stage for me: the do it- yourself philosophy, questioning the norm, thinking critically, and pushing the boundaries of acceptability. But above all of those things, the most basic characteristic of punk rock is to be true to one’s self. But, I broke that promise. I lost sight of myself and became ii someone I thought I should be in the eyes of my peers. And so, Nicholas and his book came along shortly after I started questioning my decisions and choices in life. Not only have I benefited from his being such a good friend, but so too has my daughter. I raise M to be a free thinker and she is very much a free spirit. When I look at her, I am so proud of the young woman she is becoming. She will make her mark. And just like how she came out to the world, she will do it in her own way and in her own time. Do not rush this child, and do not expect her to do it the normal way. She is a weirdo. Nicholas has captured only one summer, three months, in this book. These months were pinnacle in defining him as an adult. He, too, was thirteen during the events that took place. I am so grateful that Kim entered his life, for however brief that time was. She taught him to live in acceptance of one’s self, to question everything, to stretch himself outside his perceived comfort zone. She taught him punk rock. She taught him it was okay to be a weirdo.

Nicholas Tanek grew up as a New Jersey punk rock skater kid who lost himself in the early 90’s New York City rave scene. After years of drug addiction, he got his life together when he was reunited with Lynn, the love of his life, before she died at the age of 37. Instead of choosing negativity, he chose creativity. Losing Lynn inspired him to write his first book, The Coolest Way To Kill Yourself. There is quite a bit of kinky sex, drugs, and music in the life of Nicholas Tanek and he has some unique stories to tell.

18310162THROUGH THE DEEP WATERS by Kim Vogel Sawyer is another exciting Christian Historical Fiction set in 1883 Chicago, Illinois and Florence, Kansas.

“A past filled with shame can be washed away with a love that conquers all” (from the back cover)

From a Chicago brothel, to a hotel chambermaid in Kansas, Dinah may just find the forgiveness she so seeks and the love she never thought to find.

An excellent tale of redemption, faith, healing, forgiveness and love. Written with the right mixture of romance, and emotional drama, and faith. A Broken Kind of Beautiful: A Novel

Welcome, Katie, and congratulations on your latest release!!

MBA&M: In A BROKEN KIND OF BEAUTIFUL, why make your heroine, a model?

I wanted to write a story that explored the concept of beauty and worth and I thought, “What better way to do that than by giving my heroine a profession in the beauty industry?” So often we see these models on the covers of magazines and in catalogs and we forget they are real people, with flaws and hang ups and hurts. Is it possible that the women we often compare ourselves to feel every bit as insecure as we so often feel?

MBA&M: What was the inspiration behind the writing of this story?

Several different things inspired me to write this novel, one of which was my work with junior high students over the last several years. I see what society is shoving in the faces of our young women. So much of the “beauty” they see is unattainable. So much is smoke and mirrors. I wanted to write a story that peeled back that veneer and gave women a peek at what’s underneath the glitz and glam.

MBA&M: What do you feel your greatest accomplishment in your writing career, so far, is and why?

Oh, that’s a tough one! I could say being a Christy Award finalist or a Carol Award winner, both of which were huge honors in the genre I write. But I think at the end of the day, my greatest accomplishment is every single time I hear from readers that my books have encouraged or changed them in some positive way. There is nothing quite like that!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers, a few funny stories, while, attending book signings, either for yourself or another author?

Is it lame that I can’t think of anything specifically? I’m super thankful to have had some really fun local book signings. I love meeting new readers and hugging old readers and handing out Oreo truffles (I’ve made these now for every local book signing I’ve done). For my first novel, my publisher scheduled a book signing for me up in Minneapolis and while nothing funny happened at the book signing, my husband and I sure laughed a lot on the drive north. I don’t even remember what we were laughing at. I just remember that it was the kind of laughter that had tears rolling down our cheeks and our stomachs hurting! That’s the best kind, isn’t it?

MBA&M: Who do you feel, is your greatest influence in your writing career?

Hmmm…that’s a great question! Karen Kingsbury and Francine Rivers are both two authors I read early on that inspired me to write inspirational fiction. Dwight Swain wrote a book called Techniques of the Selling Writer that had a huge influence on the way I craft stories. Then there are the people I know in real life—like my husband. He inspires and influences me every day! I’m pretty sure every hunky hero I write is in some way inspired by him. 

Thank you, for stopping by today! We at MBA&M wish you many more successful releases and look forward to your next exciting adventure!

About the author:

Kelly O’Connor McNees is the author of two novels, “The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott” and “In Need of a Good Wife.” Born and raised in Michigan, Kelly found that books made good friends. Mary Lennox, Winnie Foster, Kit Tyler, Will Stanton, and a dozen other characters were as real to her as any of the kids on her block, and she decided that the best way to keep them around and provide them with some company was to become a writer herself. Kelly received her first rejection letter in tenth grade, from the fiction editor at “Seventeen,” and has been writing her way back ever since. In the meantime, she has worked as a teacher and editor, and lives with her husband and daughter in Chicago.

Susanna's Dream (The Lost Sisters of Pleasant Valley Series #2)

Hi Marta and welcome to My Book Addiction and More. What a pleasure and honor to have you visit with us and our readers today!!

·       MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few tidbits about Marta Perry?

o    I started dreaming about being a writer when I was only eight, but it took quite a few years before I began trying to make that dream a reality. I wrote over three hundred short stories and articles before I sold the first book. Now, as a grandmother, I’m able to live the life I dreamed about so long ago! I’ve had over fifty books published, and there are over six million copies of my books in print.

·       MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Suzanna’s Dreams”?

o   My husband and I live in the Susquehanna River valley in Pennsylvania, and I’ve long thought that someday I needed to write a book set around the floods that have devastated our area too many times. Susanna’s Dream became the book that told that story, as if fit so well with my series about three Amish sisters separated by a terrible accident as children who are brought together by another devastating event as a flood sweeps through their lives.

·       MBA&M: What made you chose Pleasant Valley as your setting for this  story/series?

o   Pleasant Valley is my imaginary area in central Pennsylvania, based on the place where I live. I am comfortable writing about the central Pennsylvania Plain People because they’re so familiar to me. Creating my own community made it possible to invent characters and places to suit my story, but anyone who is familiar with the area will recognize some real landmarks!

·       MBA&M: What do you feel is the appeal of the Plain People, their heritage, customs, etc?

o   I think because modern life is so busy, so hectic, and so over-connected, readers find a pleasant escape in a life which seems slower paced, with more time for what is really important. I believe, as well, that we have an instinctive admiration for those who live what their faith dictates, regardless of how out-of-step they may be with the surrounding culture.

·       MBA&M: Which character was the most challenging for you to write and why?

o   I believe the character of Seth was in some ways the most difficult, because Seth is caught between the Amish world and the English one. I wanted his decisions about his life to be challenging and genuine, and I struggled with what those decisions should be.

·       MBA&M: If you where a character in a novel, who would be, where would you hail from and which author would write you story, excluding yourself of course?

o   I’ve always secretly wanted to be Mary Poppins! Do you think I could be?

·       MBA&M: In the Movies: What is your favorite movie, your favorite actor and/or actress, and your favorite series?

o    That’s a hard one, because my favorite movie is always whatever I’ve seen recently. I’ve been hitting all the kids’ movies with the grandchildren, and my current favorite is Frozen. What a great story for both adults and children, with not one but two terrific heroines!

·       MBA&M: What is your next project after writing this trilogy?

o   I’m currently embarked on several different projects. A new Amish series for Berkley Books, Keepers of the Promise, will start in October with The Forgiven. I’m also working on a new Amish romantic suspense series for HQN Books.

·       MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find “Suzanna’s Dreams” and where to connect with you?

o   You’ll find Susanna’s Dream at most bookstores and online at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Christianbook.com. You can find me online at http://www.martaperry.com or on Facebook at Marta Perry Books. And if readers write to me at marta@martaperry.com, I’ll be happy to respond with a bookmark and a copy of my brochure of Pennsylvania Dutch recipes.

Thank you for taking a few moments to visit with us and our readers!

Grateful for their own hard-won relationship, Lydia Beachy and Chloe Wentworth are eager to reveal themselves to Susanna as her long-lost sisters. But their news utterly distresses Susanna, who is heartbroken to learn that the woman she’s been mourning was not actually her mother. Despite Lydia and Chloe’s best efforts to make amends, Susanna resolves to keep them at arm’s length. It may take a force of nature to sweep away her fears. Will that storm demolish all that the three women most value…or unite them in bonds of deep and abiding affection?
