PAUL GILLEBAARD,author of “Moon Hoax”..

MBA&M: Please give our readers a bit of background about yourself?

I am a small business owner of Gillebaard Engineering Corp. I graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I coach track at the local high school.  My wife and I have been married 20 years and have two wonderful daughters. We live in Orange County California. I have absolutely no background in writing, and can’t say I ever had any aspirations to be a writer.  The story of Moon Hoax started out as an idea in my head that developed into a page of notes. After months of prodding from my wife, I decided to attempt writing the book (having no idea how to start). A year and half later I had the first draft.

MBA&M: Where did the idea of “Moon Hoax” come from?

I lived in Nassau Bay Texas, which is right across from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s where many Apollo astronauts lived.  Having men who walked in space or on the moon as neighbors was no big deal at the time (we moved away in 1971 when I was 10).

Nassau Bay was a very cool place for a little boy (the neighborhood was built like a resort with a lake, bay, and country club with a pool). Builders were trying to make the neighborhood as attractive as possible to lure future astronauts joining NASA (the neighborhood was completed in time for the third group of astronauts selected….like eventual moonwalkers, Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Gene Cernan).

It was one of the best times in my childhood years. When my children where the age I was when I lived in Nassau Bay, I came to realize what a special time it was. I began to appreciate the history that was being made at the time.  Soon I was spending hours googling Apollo. Eventually I decided I needed to do something with all this knowledge I was gaining.

The idea for the novel developed when I wondered how quickly America could get back to the moon if it was of national importance (a week, a month, a year…?).  And how would we get there (by using old proven technology, or new?).  I then came up with the China angle (China claiming we never landed, and the US having to get back to the moon today to prove we did or lose credibility and eventually its world leadership to China).

MBA&M: How hard was it to get your research information and where it you find all the facts related to this title?

Very easy.  That is the great thing about writing books today, we have the internet. You have instant information right at your finger tips, and this information is current. So for example I could Google, “Problems docking with the Space Station” and all these great articles come up. However, I should point out I did interview a handful of astronauts that had some great technical suggestions that made it into the book. Also one of these men did a final technical read for me.

MBA&M: Tell our readers a little about one of your secondary characters in “Moon Hoax”?

Viktor Alexandrov, a 75 year old retired cosmonaut who joins the lead character to fly the dangerous mission to the moon.  Viktor was the comic relief in the book. He was my favorite character, and joy to write (he has a little of my dad in him).

MBA&M: What was your favorite part about writing “Moon Hoax”?

Finishing the book!  Having no experience in writing, I felt I could crank out the book in 6 months.  Not true. Instead it wasn’t until after a year and half of research, interviews and rewrites, that I finally typed that last word of the manuscript. My wife and I shared a bottle of champagne that night.  Of course probably the best moment for any first time writer, is holding that first hardcopy from the printer.

MBA&M: If you could pick a character in this title to be for a day,who would it be and why?

Peter Novak, the lead character. How cool would it be to be a part of the CIA, and your area of expertise is flying in space. Plus his love life wasn’t too bad.

MBA&M:  Give our readers three words you feel describe your writing style?

Entertaining easy read

MBA&M: How do you separate your personal life from your professional life?We realize writing, book appearances, online social networking takes up a lot of your time.

Fortunately my other job (I am a long ways from making a living as just an author) allows me to work at home, which helps being a father of two active teenagers (my wife works at an office).  Of course I am also a track coach.  So I am quite busy. I do most of my writing in the morning, and at night (as well as doing things like this).  I am halfway through the second book (which is a sequel to Moon Hoax, and will be part of three book set).

MBA&M: What do you hope readers will come away with by reading “Moon Hoax”?

First and foremost, be entertained.  I love hearing people say they couldn’t put the book down because of how much they were enjoying it.  Getting positive feedback is very rewarding; especially from people I don’t know.  Also the book is very relevant for today, so I also hope readers get a little education on both the past and present space programs.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where they can purchase “Moon Hoax”?

I am happy to offer your readers a special 40% discount for a limited number of signed first edition copies.  To take advantage of this offer, your readers can go to my website, www.MoonHoaxBook. com and enter the code: BookAddiction. CIA agent and former NASA candidate Peter Novak, son of a U.S. moonwalker, is selected to fly a mission back to the moon against UN sanctions to set the record straight. With no manned rocket close to flying, America must figure out how to get their man into deep space undetected and without international help.

Restoring his father’s good name and the reputation of his country on a one-way ticket to lunar orbit sounds crazy–but it’s Peter’s only chance to break free of Earth’s atmosphere and fulfill his dream as an astronaut. Peter enlists a former space rival as his unlikely co-pilot, and the two battle to outwit China’s efforts to sabotage the operation and beat the Chinese back to the moon.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few things about Kelly Rae?

I’d love to; let’s see I am a mom first and foremost. My son, Triton, is nine and constantly keeping me on my toes. He is also my favorite person in the world. We currently live in southern California, but I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I love movies, mostly romance and shoot ‘em up bang-bang types. I can’t watch scary movies, because I laugh and ruin it for everyone else. And if you catch me on a good day I will make you a pasta sauce that will knock your socks off!

MBA&M: What made you decide to write “What if…”?

I started writing this book before my son was even born. Then life took over for a bit and I lost focus on writing. Then one day my son and I were talking about his dreams (being drafted into the NBA) and I thought what better way to show him that dreams are possible than to do it for myself. Triton knew I wanted to be a writer and so I went for it, full force. I just decided it was time to live my own dream, so I finished What If… and started the work of polishing, for publishing.

MBA&M: Why is “What if…” close to your heart and what was the challenges in writing this title?

I think since it’s my first published work there is bound to be a level of closeness that will surpass all other books I write. However, there is also the element of forgiveness that is key to me. Things happen in life and we take on blame that is not ours, sometimes shaking that undeserved blame is very difficult. I love the journey that Katie takes to forgive herself and move forward. I think it was actually a lesson I learned while writing the book and forgave myself for a few things in the process.

The difficulty for me was letting go of the story, letting it out into the world where it will be reviewed and judged and not just my little baby anymore.

MBA&M: What are some of the issues for today’s aspiring authors?

I think one of the biggest issues currently is deciding whether to wait for a traditional publishing contract or to self/indie pub. This new ability has made a lot more options available to aspiring writers. For a long time it was very important to me to have a NYC, big six publisher pick me out of the blue and publish my book. The trouble is that it can take a long time to be SEEN by someone in the big six. You will face many a rejection by agents and editors before anyone in NYC will take a serious look at your work. J.K. Rowling wasn’t noticed until she had already published the first Harry Potter book on her own, so it doesn’t mean you aren’t a solid writer. It’s a very subjective business, just like reviews and readers themselves. Not every agent or pub house is going to think you or your work, works for them. You can choose to wait for the nod from New York or even a smaller press…or you can DIY. Self-pubbing is also a risk and will take time to build a readership, but for some at least it’s time spent being published. My best and only advice is to research all of the options you have and decide what works for you, personally. Writers are making a success in both veins of publishing. So, research and then write, write, write!

MBA&M: I see you are considered a bit of a daredevil by your friends, tell our readers some of the things you have “dared” to do?

Oh, this is a fun question! Let’s see, I swam with sharks in Waikiki, I bungee jumped off a crane, zip-lined in Catalina. In addition, on a slightly milder scale, I’ve been in hot air balloons, helicopters and raced on the back of a motorcycle. The motorcycle one I wouldn’t do again – not even protection between me and cement and I have to skin I enjoy my skin. But there are still a few items on the dare devil list J

MBA&M: Who would you say is your biggest “supporter” and why?

My biggest supporter is my son, because while I was finishing What If… and working on getting it published, he agreed to move away from California to a small town in Oregon. It was a place where it would be cheaper to live and I had family to help, while I worked on the book. It was a pretty big sacrifice for a seven year old, at the time. Nevertheless, he did it for me and someday I will return the favor and do whatever it takes to make his dreams come true. Here is to hoping that whatever it takes involves a waterfall and rappel ropes. J

What If…

                           Authored by               Kelly Rae

Cover design or artwork by   Steena Holmes

“Katie, are you listening to me?” Chris demanded with a stomp of his feet, like a child.

“Chris, I don’t believe you, I know what I saw. Don’t treat me like a fool I’m… ” Just then a mixed color of lights were projected onto the house and Katie turned to see a sheriff car pulling into the driveway, headlights on with red and white lights flashing but no sound. When the deputy got out of the car, her knees gave out and she just about hit the deck. He was here for her, she could feel it down the pit of her stomach. Chris had been right behind her and caught Katie before she fell to the ground. Katie was screaming stop, go away, and in her head but nothing was coming out of her mouth. She closed her eyes, willing the scene to be different when she opened them again. She felt like a small child hiding from the boogieman, if she couldn’t see the deputy then he couldn’t see her, right? She would open her eyes to find him gone in five, four, three, two…

“Katie, are you ok?” Chris was yelling at her, for how long she couldn’t be sure. She opened her eyes and there was the deputy, almost right in front of her now. Her mouth wasn’t working; her throat felt dry and closed up, swollen like a bad sore throat but with no pain. Numb. Sometimes in life we know things. Instantly. A sound, a smell, or just a feeling in the pit of our stomachs alert us to changes in life’s vibrations that we cannot understand on an intellectual level: they are intuitions. For Katie, this means she knows exactly what’s happened to her father before the deputy tells her, knows he’s been in an accident, and knows it’s not okay. In fact, she knows it’s far from okay. After her visit to his bedside at the hospital that night, she will never see him alive again-the first man she ever loved. And after her father’s funeral she is determined to never again see Chris Staller either-the first boy she ever loved.

Fast-forward ten years and Katie is now a beautiful, successful, and driven woman in her late-twenties. But her father’s death and Chris’ betrayal have clouded every relationship she has had since that night. From potential romantic partners to her closest friends, she has kept everyone around her from getting too close. Working through these intimacy issues while maintaining a stellar career reputation, however, has been a challenge-but challenges are Katie’s lifeblood. She rises to every occasion and always comes out on top.

When Katie pays a visit to her old high school, however, she runs into Chris, now a dedicated PE teacher who pines for the one he let get away: her. An upstanding member of the community and a much better man than he was a boy, Chris is determined to win Katie back at all cost. But Katie is less than receptive to the idea, and when he lays down a challenge, she is determined to come out on top again.

A fun, funny, and poignant journey from first love through finding life’s path, Kelly Rae’s debut is a sweet love story that serves as a reminder to the healing power of forgiveness. Learning to follow the heart is a lesson everyone must learn, and her unadorned prose underscores the emotional terrain of that passage with powerful simplicity. Full of extraordinary grace and warmth, What If…will fill your life with hope and an inner knowing of life’s positive force.

Good morning, William and welcome to My Book Addiction and More!!

MBA&M: Please give our readers some insight into William Woodall?

WILLIAM: Well, let’s see.  I’m one of those invincible optimists that always sees the silver lining in every bad situation.  My wife laughs at me for it and calls me Mr. Sunshine all the time.  But it’s not that I don’t see the dark side of things or that I don’t know what that feels like- believe me, I do.  I just choose not to focus on it.

MBA&M: What called you to become an author?

WILLIAM: I think I’ve always wanted to become an author, ever since I was old enough to know I wanted anything at all.  There’s something special about creating things, telling stories that no one ever heard before, which is just awesome.

MBA&M:  What is the allure of werewolves?

WILLIAM: Werewolves are an old, old tale, and they’ve been popular ever since people started telling stories. I think people like them for the same reason they like the idea of flying like a bird.  It’s the lure of having powers beyond what human beings can normally do, and if we can’t have those things in reality then it’s nice to enjoy it as a fantasy story sometimes.

MBA&M: Give our readers a little background on “THE LAST WEREWOLF HUNTER”?

WILLIAM: When I started writing this book, I wanted to do a werewolf story which was different than anything else I’d ever read.  Yeah, I know that’s a tall order, but that was my goal.  But I also wanted to have fun with it, and I was determined not to let it get too serious.  So I came up with the idea of Zach growing up in a family of werewolves and deciding to reject that kind of life for himself, and then finding himself in a position where he had to be the one to break the werewolf Curse for the whole world.  Not something he ever expected, and it gave him a lot of opportunities to learn and grow and do some fantastic things.

MBA&M: What do you thing the allure of “THE LAST WEREWOLF HUNTER” will be to readers?

WILLIAM: Werewolf stories are pretty common nowadays, and it’s hard to find something that’s truly fresh and different to say about them.  I think The Last Werewolf Hunter is unlike anything else on the market right now, and with as many werewolf stories as there are, that’s really saying something.  If it were only me, I’d be nervous about claiming such a thing, but after so many readers have said the same thing, I have to agree with them.  The Last Werewolf Hunter is a werewolf story unlike anything else you’ve ever read.

MBA&M: Where did the idea of “THE LAST WEREWOLF HUNTER” come from?

WILLIAM: I get asked this question a lot, and I’m not sure I know the answer.  I’ve always liked werewolf books, especially if they had some humor and maybe a little bit of deeper meaning to think about.  So maybe it’s only logical that I’d end up writing something like that one day.  It started out as a short story I wrote when I was in high school, and it grew up from there.

MBA&M: What is in your “To read” pile?

WILLIAM: Insurgent, by Veronica Roth.  I just finished Divergent, and I can’t wait to read the sequel.  I’m also looking forward to finishing Robert Liparulo’s House of Dark Shadows series.  I’m a voracious reader, whenever I have time to do it, and there are so many great books out there.

MBA&M: Who do you feel your writing most resembled?

WILLIAM: I think I’ve been influenced by a lot of writers, in various ways.  I got my quirky humor from Robert Heinlein, my high symbolism from C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and then there’s quite a bit which is just purely me.

MBA&M: What is the one thing you would like to accomplish with your

WILLIAM: I’d like for my readers to be inspired by the stories I write.  Kids hear so many stale, boring lectures about how they ought to behave and what’s right and wrong, and then on the other hand they hear so many other stories that glorify bad behavior, too.   There are not many stories out there which are fun, exciting, real, and can make goodness seem like something cool and admirable.  It’s a hard tightrope to walk.  But I hope, if I’ve done my job, that that’s what my stories will be.

MBA&M: If you could step into a book which one would it be and why?

WILLIAM: I think my favorite fantasy world is a tossup between Narnia and Middle Earth.  I love the richness of both places, and I think what I love best of all is that there are things really worth doing, choices that really make a difference, and people I’d really like to get to know.  The depth of those two worlds is something truly awesome.

MBA&M: Which character in “THE LAST WEREWOLF HUNTER” do you most identify with? Why?

WILLIAM: That would have to be Zach, no question about it.  He’s the main character, of course, and since the whole story is told through his eyes, he almost IS the story.   I think Zach is easy for anybody to identify with, though.  He’s so real-seeming that you soon feel like he’s been one of your best friends for years.  He goes through so much pain and heartache in the book, but he never loses his sense of humor or his ability to see things in a way you’d never think of.  He’s the kind of character you remember for a long time.

MBA&M: What is next for you as an author?

WILLIAM: I’m not quite sure yet, at this point.  I just finished writing a new novel called “Unclouded Day”, and I’m thinking about writing a new book about Zach at some point, since I’ve gotten so many requests for that.  Nobody seems to want to let him go.  It won’t be about werewolves this time, but I haven’t decided what he might have to tackle next.  lol

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where “THE LAST WEREWOLF HUNTER” is available?

WILLIAM: The Last Werewolf Hunter can be found just about anywhere books are sold.  The best place to find me or more information about the things I write would be on my website at www.williamwoodall.org

William,do you have anything else you would like to add?

WILLIAM: If anybody would like to read part of the book for free (the first four or five chapters or so) you can do that by visiting my website and clicking on the links.

Thank you for visiting with us and our readers today!!

MBA&M: Give our readers a little background about yourself?

MARY LU: I grew up in South Florida where I fell in love with the tropics and tall ships and dreamt of swashbuckling pirates, but I now live on the opposite side of the country in California. How I ended up out here is a long story. LOL.  I have a degree in Math/Computer Science and worked as a geeky programmer for 15 years at IBM. Yes, it’s true. Weird, but true.  I’ve been writing full time for six years, been married for 20, and I have six kids and 3 cats.

MBA&M: What are some lessons learned as an author?

MARY LU: Don’t ever make this career about you. Make it about helping others, about entertaining them and encouraging them and helping them see life from a different perspective. For me, it’s about making people see how much God loves them. When it becomes about me, I get worried, anxious, jealous, demanding. When it’s about others, I just work hard, and let God handle the rest.

Also, write the story God puts on your heart and don’t write the stories you think will sell or the stories that are hot in the market. When I wrote my pirate series, there were no Christian pirate stories out there and nobody wanted historical novels.

MBA&M:  List three things readers may or may not know about you and your writing career?

MARY LU: The very first book that I submitted for publication got accepted. (Please don’t hate me)

I have 10 books published and 4 more contracted.

My very first book, The Redemption, was nominated for the prestigious Christy award!

MBA&M:  What do you feel about self-publishing and will you be self-publishing any of your future titles?

MARY LU: Recent changes in the publishing industry are very exciting!  Many authors who’ve never had a chance to become published through a traditional publisher, can now publish their own work with minimal effort and money. I think it’s great!  It not only opens up doors for so many authors, but it gives us more freedom to choose what stories we will write. Of course that means there will be a ton of badly written books put on the market, but I’d rather have the readers be the gate keepers than some small group of publishers.

Yes, I’m planning on writing a mermaid story that’s been burning on my heart and putting that out as an e-book. This is a book that would never get accepted by traditional publishers, but I believe there’s a real market out there for it and it’s a story that must be told.

MBA&M: MaryLu, with today’s market and the publishing industry seeming to pull awry from certain topics, how hard is it to write stories involving Pirates, especially if it is something you enjoy? And do you feel there is a vast market for the “Pirate” invasion?

MARY LU: Back in 2005 when I was shopping around my pirate series, I came across a lot of opposition in the Christian market. In fact I got rejected by every single Christian Publisher except one. Pirates are notorious thieves and let’s face it, most people don’t think Christianity and thieves mix very well!  At least not at first glance. But I’m of the opposite opinion. I think Christianity and thieves and prostitutes and murderers and liars and all other forms of debauchery mix quite well. Jesus himself hung out with sinners all the time. Why would I want to only read about righteous people? What better way to express the awesome power and love of God then by taking a dead-beat wicked pirate and showing how God can change him, transform him and give him life!

MBA&M: Is there a market for the pirate invasion?

MARY LU: I sure hope so!! I have many more tales I’d love to write! But time will tell.

MBA&M: What do you feel the allure of “Pirates” are to readers today?

MARY LU: I can only tell you why I love pirates. I don’t look at them as thieves and murderers, though some surely were quite evil. I look at them as misfits, rejects, and outcasts from society who took to the seas in search of freedom and a chance to make a fortune. Many of them were poor sailors who’d lost their jobs in the navy when the wars ended. Others were political prisoners escaping tyranny, others were escaped indentured servants, others x-slaves, some just didn’t fit into society’s mold and couldn’t make a living.  Many of them were actually forced into piracy when their merchant ships were captured.  Let’s face it, there’s a little bit of misfit in us all, a part of each of us who feels we don’t fit in. And maybe a part of us who just wants to get away from all of society’s restrictions and requirements and live free again. I think that’s the true allure of pirates. Besides, swashbuckling adventures aboard a ship are really cool!

MBA&M: As a Christian author, how hard do you feel it is to get readers outside of the Christan/Inspirational reader to read this genre?

MARY LU: Next to impossible. And when they do, I often get blasted with criticism about my books being too preachy.  When in fact, they really aren’t. My spiritual themes flow nicely with the story just like wizardry flows nicely with the Harry Potter stories, or vampires flow nicely with the Twilight series. All are supernatural stories. All have miracles and events that go beyond our human understanding. Yet it’s always the books that mention Jesus or God that get criticized.  Go figure. I think if some non-Christians would give Inspirational books a try, they might really enjoy them and find the spiritual aspect of them quite encouraging.

Welcome to My Book Addiction and More!

JSO: Thanks very much. Happy to be here!

MBA&M: Can you start by telling us what motivated you most in writing this book?

JSO: The greatest impact for me has to be those many bedtimes and naptimes years ago when my mother read to me. I didn’t realize how important those moments were until I had children – I have three girls – and found myself reading to them from the same books of children’s poetry and nursery  rhymes that my mother read to me when I was a child.

MBA&M: So you kept the same books. They must have been pretty old!

JSO: We won’t say how old! But yes, the very same books, like Now We Are Six and The World of Christopher Robin. I was just amazed by the beauty, innocence and magic those old rhymes and stories held for me. So, when I was ready to start writing my book, the road before me was clear: To try to recapture the same gentle rhythms and loving sweetness of those old, long-ago children’s stories.

MBA&M: But there’s more to a book than just the style of writing. What about the contents, the story itself?

JSO: Well…we know children’s stories do not lack for imagination, or for vivid characters or unexpected twists and turns. The story in When Once I Lived is similar. I imagined a man who, coming to the end of his days and looking out upon his Eternity, embarks upon a spiritual Meditation that takes him far and wide in his Afterlife. His goal is not merely to satisfy his curiosity but to achieve his one unfulfilled wish – to find a way to “undo” that one, most hurtful error which he committed during his life. His shame and guilt drive him on and will not let him rest until he has found the answer he seeks.

MBA&M: When you talk about the afterlife, I have to ask, how religious is the book? Is it only for Christians?

JSO: By no means. The primary character is a Christian, so naturally he tends to see certain things from that standpoint, but I would say the book approaches spirituality on a more general level – simply recognizing and acknowledging the generosity and loving-kindness of our Maker. Beyond that, there is no religious “agenda” at work here – other than, I suppose, some good-natured mockery of Atheists.

MBA&M: Any reaction from atheists yet?

JSO: You know, it’s really too bad, but a good friend of mine – a friend for many years – who I sent a copy of the book, asked me first “Which are the chapters about atheists – about what happens to them in the Afterlife?” So I told him what they were, and he read those chapters, and then he practically stopped speaking to me! I am so sad, now, that he seems to have taken those chapters personally, but I hope in time we will be good friends again.

When Once I Lived

“Our God is a great God …

Let me tell you how I know.”

So begins this emotionally powerful Meditation upon our future in the Afterlife.

The Story:   A life-long Christian, now reaching his retirement, embarks upon an uplifting, deeply-spiritual odyssey in which he seeks to “undo” that one, most hurtful error which he committed during his life. Commencing his search – and guided, always, by words and promises given to us in the Bible – he travels widely in the Afterlife, discovering astonishing and unanticipated secrets that deepen his faith.

At last, having reached that most lofty vantage point from which he is permitted to survey the whole of human history, he falls into an inescapable vortex of folly, confusion and mistake. But … holding fast to this faith, he is reunited with his wife, achieves forgiveness, and sees that greater plan which our Maker has for us in our eternity.

Open your heart to this testament of imperishable spiritual truths – told in words of utmost poetic beauty – and you will learn:

  • The truth behind Percy Bysshe Shelley’s immortal poem Ozymandias
  • The secret location of the long-lost Archives of Atlantis
  • The surprising fate of Atheists in the afterlife – and see Atheism, itself, subjected to devastating and hilarious mockery!
  • How – in some far-distant day – a future “Queen Elizabeth” will save her kingdom from ruin
