About the Book:

Her sister might be the law and her brothers the brawn, but Riley Kingston is definitely the brains of the family. She’s a talented botanist well on her way to a PhD—so why does she feel like a failure? Fired from a dream project in Costa Rica, Riley’s stuck back in her hometown. Cataloguing plants on Steele land keeps her busy, but it’s far from compelling work. Until she discovers a fascinating new specimen. One with a body made for pleasure . . . and eyes filled with a pain she longs to understand.
Delta Force operator Coen Monroe doesn’t want to be studied. Not even by the sexy scientist whose inquisitive glances stir up desires he isn’t ready to handle. He came to Steele Ridge to be alone, to battle his nightmares and the memories triggering them. But Riley’s gentle seduction is as relentless as her curiosity. She soothes his wounded soul . . . and fires up his defensive instincts. But once her research sparks a deadly conspiracy, Coen is exactly what she needs.
When Riley is targeted by a sociopath bent on silencing her forever, Coen will do anything to protect her. But can he save the woman he loves without losing himself in the process?

Excerpt:

Coen staggered to a halt, his body swaying and his exhausted mind clawing for clarity. Out of all the thousands of acres he could’ve run through, how had he managed to intersect the botanist’s space? Some might call it fate, but he considered it one more rock in an avalanche of bad luck.

“Who the hell are you?”

The botanist whipped around from her crouched position, eyes wide and wary.

Slowly, as if she were afraid of spooking a wild animal, she eased into a standing position. How long they stood there, staring at each other, he didn’t know. But from one heartbeat to the next, her gaze unlocked with his and began a slow, thorough progression down his face, along his neck, over his bare chest.

Her inspection lingered at the spot where his shorts rode low on his hips. Hunger pushed away the wariness in her eyes before they continued their meandering journey.

Searing need arrowed through his gut, awakening a part of him that had been dormant for far too long.

“Did I do something wrong?”
Luke didn’t turn and look at her. He just continued to poke that fire when he said, “No.”
“Are you angry that I ruined your plans with Gabe last night?” It was a lame question. But really, Peyton didn’t know what else she could have done wrong, so whatever…as long as she kept him talking.
“No.”
No. That was all she was entitled to. His one-word answers drove her crazy, especially since he didn’t seem to have any problem spending over ten minutes alone with Tasha talking or…maybe he didn’t spend that time engaging in conversation because maybe they were too busy…
“Did you f**k Tasha?”
He dropped the poker, sending it crashing to the floor. He picked it up, propped it against the brick fireplace and faced her. “No.”
“But she asked you to…to f**k her. Didn’t she?”
“Yes.”
Peyton should have been happy and ridden out that wave of relief, but she wasn’t. His admission that he had just shot down Tasha, one of the sexiest supermodels in the world, only brought on more questions. Questions she really had no business asking. But what did she really have to lose? He had already seen her at her worst. Covered in sand and puke, she imagined that she had looked like a real keeper. So she fired away.
“Are you married?”
He took two steps toward her. “No.”
“Have a girlfriend?” Her voice wavered a bit. She had been more confident when he had been across the room poking the damn fire, but now he was drifting toward her, causing her to lose her nerve.
Three more steps. “No.”
“Oh.” That was all she could get out. She had done a lot of embarrassing things in her life, like when she had taken a header off the catwalk at a major show, or when she had a serious wardrobe malfunction and unintentionally flashed hundreds of people her ass. And then there were those photos of her that were posted on social media before she had gotten her s*it together. But this moment right here. This claimed the number one spot. “I get it. You’re just not interested…in me.”
Or maybe he senses what you are…
He made the distance between them disappear with two strides. His hands gripped her waist as he pinned her against the wall of windows at her back. “Do you honestly believe that I’m not attracted to you?”
His breathing was labored like hers and she was fighting to regain her composure. Trapped in his arms, his heated eyes searching hers, she fumbled for words. “I…I don’t know what you’re thinking. What you want.”
He swallowed hard and that vein near his temple pumped ferociously. His right hand tightened around her waist and his left cupped her cheek. “What do you want from me, Peyton?” he asked, his voice strained. He sounded as if he was in pain. And that’s when she felt something rock-hard press against her core. She didn’t need to look down or see the outline of his bulge to know that he was huge. She could feel it…every fucking where. “Say it,” he demanded.
“I want you to kiss me…please.”

“Dance of the Hunter’s Moon” By Amanda LeMayBlog Tour
Oct. 30, 2018 – November 12, 2018

Even though we’d taken on the rules of “human” society, behind closed doors and in our own environments, we were animals and lived by pack law.

Dance Of The Hunter’s Moon
(Sakana Series Bk #3)

Amanda LeMay

Blurb:

Jules Havarr is a Breeder. For her, it’s a problem. Smaller than other wolves, she grew up feeling inferior to her pack mates. It didn’t help that males tended to avoid her, or looked down on her as though she were unworthy of attention. When a visiting Breeder extends an invitation to breed, Jules accepts his offer, even though it means leaving her home, friends, family, and pack behind.

Breeding at the Moon Dance is an honor she can’t refuse.

That is, until the moment she meets Sorin Campion, and a rare and ancient bond binds them together. She knows it in her heart, feels it deep in her soul. This male is her sakana, and she’s all in.

The only problem? The Breeder whose invitation she recently accepted is Sorin’s twin brother.

Sorin is a dead wolf walking. He’s suffered tragedy and heartbreak that left a lasting reminder of all he’s lost burned into his flesh. He’s lived the past few decades barely existing.

Can the sakana bond he shares with Jules awaken him from his misery, and bring purpose and hope back into his lonely life?

While exploring their love for one another, Sorin and Jules are tested by a dangerous ongoing threat to their pack. A dark and vengeful enemy may tear them, and their new found happiness, apart.

last thing he wanted to do was live one more day. His twin brother, Taber, dragged him from

Dance of the Hunter’s Moon

© Amanda LeMay 2018

Before Sorin, I’d never had a boyfriend. I’d never been in love. I’d never even been kissed.

If he’d taken the chance to save Aliza, we wouldn’t be spending one second in each other’s arms, enjoying anything as simple as the rain, the far-away flashes of lightning and rumble of intermittent thunder.

Because of our ancient, unbreakable bond, what we shared was more than a simple, physical connection. Making love was more than an act of giving and receiving pleasure. Every touch, every kiss, every smile he gave me, healed something inside of me, and slowly but surely erased every negative thought I’d held so close to my heart that kept me from being all I could be. I’d lived my life convinced I was inferior to the members of my pack, a runt with no purpose or place, and no amount of praise or encouragement from those who loved me could make me believe otherwise.

All that changed the second I met Sorin.

My mate.

My sakana.

My broken warrior.

Through our connection, I knew I wasn’t the only one healing. The pain he had lived through for so long was something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I made him smile. I made him laugh. I made him want to live again.

More than anything, whatever I gave to him that helped heal his broken heart, he gave back to me, and so much more.

I loved this male. I loved him so deeply, so purely, if something happened to him, if he were to die…I wouldn’t be as strong. The pain of losing him would kill me.

“Sorin…” Warm tears trickled down my face as he turned to pull me into his arms.

He whispered against my lips, “You’re tearing my heart out, beautiful.”

He kissed me, slowly at first with soft, full lips, then deeply, with long, dragging sweeps of his tongue against mine.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and held on as his mouth moved from my lips to my neck, trailing kisses all the way to my mating mark.

“Love you, Juliana. Love you so much.”

Instead of replying, a strangled sob burst from my lungs and I buried my face in his shoulder.

His teeth grazed my skin. “I think it’s time I take you back to bed.”

Sniffling, I nodded. “Yes, it is.”

My thoughts

A Love so Sweet by Addison Cole is a “Sweet with Heat”, novel. Book #1 in her new series “Sweet with Heat: The Bradens at Weston”.

Featuring Treat Braden and Max Armstrong. Trent is the oldest of the Braden at Weston children. Addison Cole’s characters are multidimensional, with empowered and sassy women, hot, loyal heroes, friends,  family with a sweet romance without graphic love scenes or foul language. I adore flawed characters which adds more drama, and gives readers a better understanding of the way they act.  Trent and Max are charming and realistic. A satisfying and enjoyable read. Addison Cole is Melissa Foster’s pen name for her “Sweet with Heat” series, in case you didn’t already know this tidbit of information.  Another great by the fantastic Addison Cole.

I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

“Love You So Special” By Tara Lain Release Day Blitz September 28, 2018 with #Giveaway + #Excerpt

“Love You So Special” By Tara Lain
Release Day Blitz
September 28, 2018

Can a man’s secret yearnings be revealed in a tank full of fish?

Love You So Special
(Love You So Series, bk 3)
by Tara Lain

Blurb:
Artie Haynes knows he’s nothing special, with just-your-regular-brown hair, a solid plumber’s job, not much education, and a family that can barely get off the couch. But Artie has quirks—like his love of tropical fish, a landlord who’s a professor of existentialism, a passion for the amazing piano music he hears at a concert hall while he’s fixing the bathrooms—and the fact that he’s never come out as gay and probably never will. But when he’s hired to build a guesthouse for the pianist whose music enchanted him, Artie is swept up into an unimaginable world.
Francois Desmarais may be famous, rich, and revered as one of the world’s great classical composers and pianists, but he’s soothed and challenged by the inquisitive, stalwart, protective man in his back yard. When Francois’s terrible fear of crowds turns into a dangerous plot, Artie can stay in the closet or prove just how special he is.

Love You So Special by Tara Lain

Artie peered in the open front door of the Desmarais’s house. No way he’d pass that opportunity up. He stepped inside and followed the sound of voices. Man, what a house. All fancy and traditional and shit, with paintings on the walls of scary-looking people. Funny. He wouldn’t exactly expect that messy, casual, snarky guy to live in a house like this.

He walked quietly down the hall the woman had run down. Voices came from ahead of him.

“The man said you were hurt, Senor Desmarais.”

“I’m okay. I’m fine. Just go back to—whatever. Honest, I’m fine.”

“But he said—”

“Where is this man?” He sounded pissed and upset.

Artie stepped into the doorway. He might get a vase in the face, but—he just needed to be sure Francois was okay. “I’m here. Sorry. I was just worried that you were hurt.”

“Why? Because you scared the bloody hell out of me and made me fall on my butt?”

Artie fought a smile. Francois must be feeling better if he could be a wiseass. “Yeah. Sorry about that.”

The woman looked back and forth between them like she was watching tennis.

Francois crossed his arms. “It’s okay, Maria. I want to talk to Artie here for a minute. Thanks so much for looking out for me.”

“But—” She looked seriously uncertain.

He waved a hand. “It’s okay. Honest.”

“Your mama—”

He turned a full frown on her. “What does my mother have to do with this?”

“Nothing.” She shook her head. “Can I get you anything?”

“No thanks. I’ll get it.” He walked to the door of the room, herding her toward it. When they got there, he smiled, thanked her again, and closed the door; then he turned to Artie with a crease between his eyebrows—barely visible under his pale, shaggy bangs. “So why are you messing in my life? What business is it of yours?”

Good question. Artie gave Francois a look. The gorgeous face was still blotchy from crying, and he vibrated with stress. “Look, crying’s one thing. Everybody needs a good cry sometimes.” Francois looked shocked at that statement, but Artie pushed on. “But when I hear your music going all to shit, I figure something’s really wrong, and I don’t see anybody doing fuck about it, so—” He shrugged and took a breath. “—I did. Sorry I scared you, but I couldn’t think of what else to do.” He let his eyes meet Francois’s.

Francois stared at him like maybe he’d lost his mind—or maybe he’d found it. Somewhere in between. “What do you mean, my music went to shit?”

Artie gave him a duh look. “You were all over the place. All angry and making no sense. It sounded like you were pissed at the piano. I mean, when you write, you stop and start, but it has a flow. You know? This didn’t. It was just like a bunch of notes, like—” Artie stopped because Francois’s lips were parted and he looked like he might pass out. Well, hell. “Look, I don’t mean anything by it. I never heard better music than you play, but what the fuck do I know? I’m just a plumber. So don’t pay any attention to—”

“How do you even know that?”

“What?”

“What my music sounds like. How I was all over the place?”

Artie pointed toward the window. “I listen.” He held up his hands. “Don’t get me wrong, I don’t eavesdrop. But I work right out there. How could I not hear?”

“You listen.” He said the word like he was sleepwalking, and his eyes got all shiny. “People pay huge prices for tickets to my concerts and don’t listen!” Shit, is he going to cry again?

Artie didn’t say anything. Hell, he didn’t know what else to say. But crying men weren’t really an everyday thing for him. He’d never seen his father cry. His brother, a little, but never any guy he worked with, even when they got hurt bad.

I cry. Alone, under a pillow. Sometimes to the fish. I know what that feels like. He’d stick his fingers in the water and let them nibble just to have something touch him that wasn’t cold or hurting. Tentatively, he reached out and put a hand on Francois’s arm. “It’s okay.”

The crease flashed between his brows as he stared at Artie’s hand. “What’s okay?”

“Whatever.” Artie smiled. “All of it. Sometimes being a particular way is just a pile of shit.” Jesus, he didn’t even know why he’d said that.

Francois gasped—and suddenly Artie had an armload of guy. Francois threw his arms around Artie’s neck and just squeezed.

Blurb:
What’s a superheroine to do when her super soldier ex turns up alive after more than fifteen years?

Lyndsey doesn’t have much time to walk down memory lane before she and Ian find themselves thrown together to investigate the mysterious deaths of ten young men in the Canadian wilderness. How do such seemingly normal, healthy men’s hearts just…stop?

With the hint of an evil spirit in the wind–and a whole lot of butterflies–there’s no telling what Lyndsey and Ian are dealing with, including their own extensive baggage. Though seventeen years is a lot of life to live, there’s one thing they can’t deny: their attraction is as intense as ever. But is it just a spark that will burn itself out, or is it true love bringing them back together? When the force they’re hunting turns its sights on them, the leap of faith required far exceeds either of their powers. But worrying about their future might be premature because one wrong move and they might not make it out alive.

In Book One of the Butterfly Ops trilogy, Lyndsey and Ian reconnect fifteen years after seeing each other for what each thought was the last time. That the spark is still there is undeniable—but is it enough to get past the secrets and lies that tore them apart the first time around? With old tensions rearing their heads as new challenges arise, what at first seems to be a sure path back to trust and happiness is rockier than it seems.

Note: this is Book One in a serial trilogy. Book Two will be released in Spring 2019; Book Three will be released in early Summer 2019. Books should be read in order.

Excerpt 1:

What she should have been thinking about was spending three weeks in the woods with the next generation of the Army teams that had spent almost a year trying to kill her. Possibly even with some of the very same men, if Matt’s presence were any indication. That realization had used up all of five seconds of her mental energy, however. Army teams = men with guns who might still think of her as the enemy = she was going to have to watch her back even more so than in normal circumstances. Noted. Moving on.

What she couldn’t get her mind off of, however, was Ian. Spending three weeks with Ian. Even if he wasn’t going to actually be out in the woods with her, she’d seen enough about how Matt had operated to know they’d be connected, possibly even around the clock for that whole time.

Oh, God, she thought, sitting back in her seat. What if they really did end up on this job together for who knew how long? She had no idea how she’d manage to accomplish anything. It was all she could do right now not to openly stare. And it certainly wasn’t helping that—what was her name, Julianna?—was being totally flirty with Ian while talking about weapons, no less. If there was anything Lyndsey knew about Army guys, it was that they liked their toys.

Not fair, Lyndsey thought, fighting the urge to glare. She couldn’t exactly get all WWE and jump on the table and be like, Weapons? You think you’re getting to him because you know the difference between a Glock and a, um, not-a-Glock? Well, check this out. My body is a weapon. If he’d stuck around he would’ve gotten to benefit from that fully. What he did see, though, he totally liked. So top that Miss Desk Job.

Unfortunately, a somewhat irritated “Hmph” did slip out.

Conversation stopped as heads turned her way. “Lyndsey?” Matt said, eyebrows all bunched up into a frown. “Did you want to add something?”

Feeling her cheeks grow alarmingly warm, Lyndsey looked down at the table in front of her. “No,” she mumbled. “Sorry. Go on.”

Excerpt from A Kiss At Christmastide:

A moment of confusion clouded her mind as the laughter dimmed and a light breeze assaulted her face—as if someone had opened a window to a gusty wind.
At her side, Pippa’s mother fanned her face. Her wrist whipped to and fro, increasing as the room went silent.
Everything froze around her but her mother’s thrashing fan.
The Duchess of Midcrest, her dear mother, who’d labored for over twenty years to rise above her merchant class upbringing, would once again be embroiled in a scandal—all because of Pippa.
“Do you wish to depart?” her mother whispered.
“I did not…” Pippa stammered. “I would never…”
“I did not believe you had, my child.” Her mother sought to soften the blow—something that society had done to the current Duchess of Midcrest a hundred times over. “However, that does not change the appearance of things, no matter what we say or do in this moment.”
Pippa lifted her chin to keep her tears from streaming down her face.
“I do not understand why,” Pippa said as she leaned in close to her mother to whisper. “Lady Natalie and I are such friends.”
“Friendship and jealously often hold hands so tightly that one cannot distinguish between the pair.”

Excerpt from How To Kiss A Rogue by Amanda Mariel

Glancing from behind the fern, her stomach dropped. “Bradford,”—She came out into the open—“What are you doing here?”
“Knightly asked me to come in first.”
She released a breath she hadn’t known she had been holding. Christian was here. “You cannot stay.”
“I must. It would be highly improper to leave you unchaperoned with a man we are not related to.” Bradford smirked, shoving his hands in his pockets.
Natalie stepped up to him, placed her hands on his shoulders, and began pushing him toward the door. “Nothing untoward will happen as long as you leave now.”
Oh, why had she failed to think of a chaperone? Now Bradford had his nose squarely in the center of her scheme and he’d surely ruin everything.
A mischievous twinkle lit his eyes and he chuckled. “Nothing untoward will occur at any rate. Knightly has no wish to ruin you.”
Natalie’s face warmed and she gave another shove. “Mind your own affairs.”
“Perhaps I should tell Mother what you are about.”
“You would not dare! You cannot. Imagine what she would do, Bradford.” Natalie dropped her hands from his shoulders and gave him her best pouty look. “What do you think I am about? You act as though I am some sully maid,” She peered at him, her blood heated with angry indignation. How dare he think she was going about, carrying on trysting with men? No matter it was exactly her intended purpose…he should not assume such from her.
“Do calm yourself. Getting your skirts in a knot will change nothing.” Bradford shook his head. “We both know what you are doing here.”
She closed her eyes for a heartbeat. He was correct, she could no more lie to him than she could herself. “I beg of you, do not say a word to anyone.”
“You are quite entertaining.” He chuckled while he walked toward the door. “I will be directly outside should Knightly require my assistance.”
“You may well be the one in need.” Natalie reached for a nearby pot and flung it toward him. The projectile missed him, crashing into the floor. “You are not entertaining in the least.”
“You had better clean that mess up or Mother is certain to discover what you’ve been getting up to without my having to tell her.” His deep chuckle only increased in volume as he disappeared from the greenhouse.
She ought to have known he was teasing her. He no more wished for their parents to know his friend was secretly meeting her than she did. In retrospect, bringing Bradford along was a good plan on Christian’s part. As much as it pained her to admit it, he would ensure no one caught them alone together. Natalie released a sigh, then smoothed her skirts before Christian entered. Her heart pounded—this was her chance.
She stood still with one hip cocked to the left as he stepped into the greenhouse and approached her. “Lord Knightly, I am pleased you came.”
“You should be equally pleased that your brother was the only one to notice your note. Are you trying to get ruined?”
She swallowed at the harshness of his tone. “On the contrary, that is why I told you not to show it to anyone. Though I must confess, I am pleased Bradford came along. He will make an excellent look out.” She did her best to offer a charming smile despite her sudden nerves.
“And why would we need someone to watch out for us?” Christian leveled his penetrating stare on her.
She reached out a trembling hand and trailed the tips of her fingers across his strong jaw. Even through her gloves she felt his warmth seeping into her—imprinting on her soul. “I want a kiss. One more passionate than the one you bestowed on Lady Pippa.”

Grayson sighed. She wasn’t going to be denied anything apparently. It was too late to save her from herself. Very well, he’d deal with her and then send her on her way. He turned and sucked in a breath momentarily stunned. A silhouette of pure beauty greeted him. Her midnight tresses were wound up and bound neatly into an elegant chignon. His fingers itched to unwind it and see it flow over her luscious curves. All of this and he’d still not seen her face. When she finally turned to meet his gaze he lost all ability to breathe. Those sea-green eyes kept him riveted in place. He should stand and greet her but his body refused to function. She was the last person he expected or wanted to enter his home.“What no words?” She raised an eyebrow. “And I thought you were noted as the witty duke amongst the ton. I must say I’m rather disappointed.”Grayson drank in the sight of her. He wanted to remember her as she stood before him for the rest of his days. She was glorious, proud, and fearless. “Didn’t your father teach you better than to enter the lion’s den?” He lifted a brow mockingly. “You could very well get eaten alive.”Her lips tilted at the corner. “I rather like my chances.” She moved further into the room. “After all I tamed a lion before.”“There’s a difference between a young cub, and a full grown male, Jules,” he explained. “One is more docile and willing to cuddle. The adult wants to be petted—in other ways.” He stood up and gazed directly into her eyes. “A bite can be pleasurable or….” Grayson crossed over to her side and leaned down, whispering in her ear, “painful depending on your preference.”Juliette took a deep breath but remained where she stood. He’d give her that much. She’d always been a stubborn girl, and apparently she’d not grown out of that trait. If she didn’t take a step back soon he’d be forced to make a choice. Either he pulled her into his arms and kissed her the way he craved or he put distance between them respecting her innocence. It was a hard decision and warred deep inside him, but he did what was best for her. Turned out that some things were ingrained. Protecting her had always been his first instinct.“If you’re done trying to intimidate me I have something I wish to discuss with you.”

Claiming His Lioness (Shifter Wars) by Kerry Adrienne with ##Excerpt + #teasers

 Claiming His Lioness (Shifter Wars)

by Kerry Adrienne, arriving Sept. 3

About the book:

Former enemies align, but is it too late to protect everyone they’ve come to love?

Lara has always relished being a thorn in Mason’s paw. When she was chosen as pride Enforcer, it was easier than ever to get under the passionate shifter’s skin. But with the scent of humans in the air comes a threat she’s powerless to battle alone.

It’s time Lara unites with the one man she needs, the one man she’s secretly drawn to…as if by fate.

If there’s one thing Mason hates more than relinquishing control to a female, it’s the attraction he feels for the fiery lioness. Joining forces with Lara against an insidious enemy only makes their primal bond hotter—and the two of them stronger.

Now it’s up to them, side by side, to bring together three warring shifter clans, win the final fight and save Deep Creek.

EXCERPT

Human.

Mason sniffed the heated air again. The scent was unique—a pungent blend of power with a whiff of weakness and a full-bodied odor of self-righteousness. His snout twitched and he bared his teeth. No mistaking it—even though it was faint and most lions wouldn’t notice.

He’d never miss it. As leader of the pride, it was his job to keep everyone safe and he took that to heart.

He padded closer to the edge of the rough stone overlook, his paws sliding in the loose rubble. After regaining his footing, he stepped nearer to the edge and scanned the valley that spread in front of him. Mysterious forests and magical glens shuddered under the assault of a strong wind that pushed through the trees and up the slant of mountainsides.

Humans had made their way into the depths of Deep Creek. These weren’t the small bands of hikers that sometimes ventured north into the wilderness of the park. No, these humans smelled of civilization and city. Grime and industrialization. Power and money.

Oil.

A low growl rumbled in his throat and he panted as he strained to see into the dark forest below. No obvious signs of encroachment other than their stink. But they’d been out there recently. Maybe they still were, camouflaged by the tree canopy.

He’d find out. He swished his tail and flattened his whiskers.

Marco, where are you? His brother should’ve been at the meeting point already. He listened for his brother’s approach but heard nothing.

He was probably spending time with his bear mate, Alicia. Talk about complicated. Bears were the sworn enemy of the lions.

Mason shook his head. No matter his own feelings, he had to trust his twin brother. Alicia had saved Marco’s life and the twins would be in her debt forever. Marco more so than Mason, but then again, she was his mate.

Mates were for life and he was thankful he didn’t have one. The weight of his father’s expectations pressed on his psyche. No time for a mate.

A light breeze lifted the valley air up to his perch. Mason breathed through his mouth, sampling the pungent odor, sorting out the mixed signals from nature and human encroachment.

He bared his teeth and his heart rate sped as he tasted them. The last thing the lions needed was human trouble. Or any trouble. Recent months had been almost peaceful in Deep Creek, even though the snows had lasted long and spring had come and gone quickly. The ranger and caretaker bears had watched over the park in the winter, between naps, and they’d said nothing about unusual human behavior. And there had been no arguing or fighting.

The winter had felt like a reprieve from a never-ending war.

Now that summer spread its warm wings across Deep Creek, trouble neared again.

Marco? I need you.

He circled his position three times, then lay on the warm rock. After tucking his tail, he scanned the forest, finding no sign of anyone or anything near. Not even a squirrel or raccoon or lone hawk.

He yawned and closed his eyes. A short nap would help rejuvenate him so he could run with Marco.

With so many lives lost in the past year, including his father’s, he was most thankful that his brother had survived. Not a day went by that he didn’t thank the gods for Marco’s health.

Marco and Alicia’s union had forged a delicate truce between the bears and lions, though Mason kept the lions at the ready in case of attack. He was sure the bears did the same, but the wolves hadn’t come to tattle on battle preparations, so maybe the bears were enjoying the truce and not preparing for another war.

He and Marco were going to need the lion army sooner than he had expected.

They would sniff out what was going on with the humans and make sure they didn’t destroy the park. Get them out of the park. Their kind didn’t belong in Deep Creek.

Where was his brother?

The vast forests and mountains were large enough to support all the shifter populations, the natural wildlife, and the small hordes of tourists that came spring through fall. Those humans stayed near the park road or in the southern area of the park near Oakwood or up around Henredon. Not this far out in the wilderness.

Until now.

Humans venturing deep into this area of the woods meant trouble. With one road nearby, the area wasn’t easily accessible and then the hike in would take hours if you knew the easy path.

Getting lost was more common than an uneventful hike.

He flicked his tail to shoo away a flying insect. No matter what he tried, his mind wouldn’t shut down and relax. Marco had run across human tracks in the area and assumed it was a lost crowd of boy scouts or something, but now he knew it wasn’t an innocent incident. These humans came into the forest with intent.

Images of humans overrunning Deep Creek sent his mind spinning.

Anxiety seized him and he pushed against it.

Marco? Answer me. Mason needed him. Marco helped him take a step back and not freak out over unknown details. Figuring out what the humans wanted without engaging with them or risking blowing the shifters’ cover would be tricky.

The breeze prickled through his fur, sending the dark hairs rippling, and he blinked at the glare of sunlight off the small lake at the bottom of the valley. Shining like a silver dime, the lake lay near the highest waterfall in Deep Creek and would be a prime camping location. Rockglass Lake was a shifter hangout in the summer—mainly because they knew humans wouldn’t be poking around.

Not this season.

Mason blinked back the sunshine and stretched.

The first thing the lions needed to do was investigate where the humans had been and see if they left any clues. People were already pressed up against the boundaries of the park in some places and they’d take over more land if they were allowed. No matter that the land was federally protected.

Mason didn’t trust the human government. Max had told him stories of how the politicians could often be paid off, and whoever had the most money to bribe with won, often at the expense of everyone else.

A rustling sound in the underbrush nearby startled him and he jumped, ready to swipe at any creature who approached. His teeth bared, he knew he presented something to be afraid of.

Lion!

If it was one of the humans, he’d have a difficult time letting them explain themselves.

Marco slid from the shadows as a sleek black lion, sinewy and muscled, his eyes green and piercing. Tail low, he crept closer. Mason snuffled at his brother. It was always good to see him—even when he was annoyed with him for something stupid.

Marco padded up beside Mason and scanned the valley below for a long look. He turned to Mason, his eyes widening in question and his ears pricked.

HARD TRIGGER Excerpt
Copyright © 2018 S.L. Hannah

My body is spent. I want to feel him release inside of me. I want to collapse on top of him. I want to keep f**king like two animals that want to survive a wilderness that is both beautiful and vicious. Our chests heave in a unison that signals it’s not over and he starts pumping into me…
Except I’m not just an animal. I turn my head towards the end table, lean over and grab his cell phone.
“Call them off.” I shove the phone into his palms. “All of them. Tell them I’m not here. That they made a mistake.”
Still pumping into me, his eyes grow wider. “Don’t be f***ing crazy. Let me walk you out of here and make everyone believe that you’ve disappeared. At least for a little while.”
He’s hitting that spot. That warm and sensitive spot that makes me second-guess every decision and every goal. That makes me curl up and want to be swept away and taken care of even though I’ve never wanted it to be part of my long-term plan because I’ve seen everything that my mother has gained and lost by…being taken care of.
He searches my face for a place to reason. “What I’m offering…they’re going to catch up to you eventually. And before you catch up to my uncle again. He’s the second-in-line to a multi-national business. You killed one of his men last night. You almost killed him. You think no one noticed? This would give…us a chance.” he pleads. Even though he doesn’t say it, it’s the same proposal that he made on our trip, except without the ring. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted. I’d always been tempted.
I freeze. He’ll never know how many times I ran over the circumference of the diamond band on that night stand before I drove off, deciding on a different destiny. I knew the moment I stepped in the old Peugeot that the tread would be forever imprinted on my fingers.
“I can’t.”
The admission makes him choke on whatever he was about to say and roar in frustration, because he’s not the type of man to accept defeat.
His fingers fumble on the screen. Awkwardly he holds the cell against his ear, spitting in Spanish. He’s done what I’ve asked him to do.
He throws the phone, and then locks his forearms around my neck, leading me closer to him. His c*ck is still stiff, and it throbs inside of me, reminding me of why we’re even in this position.
Cursing, his lips find mine, biting, absorbing, demanding. And I reciprocate. I’m not unwilling. I never have been. Our tongues tangle as our bodies begin to move in unison again.
