ON TOUR~THE HIGHLANDER’S REWARD~~ELIZA KNIGHT

She belonged to another… But was destined to be his…

Lady Arbella de Mowbray abhors the idea of marrying an English noble occupying Scotland. When she arrives in Stirling, she is thrown into the midst of a full battle between the Scots and the English. Besieged by rebels, she is whisked from her horse by a Highland warrior who promises her safety. But when he kisses her she fears she’s more in danger of losing herself.

The last thing Magnus Sutherland wants is to marry the beautiful English lass he saved. As the laird of his clan, he has a responsibility to his clan and allies. But when Arbella is attacked by one of his own men, he determines the only way to keep her safe is to make her his. A decision that promises to be extremely satisfying.

Magnus brings Arbella to his home of Dunrobin Castle in the Highlands. And that’s where the trouble begins… Their countries are at war and they should be each other’s enemy. Neither one considered their mock marriage would grow into a deeply passionate love. What’s more, they were both unhappily betrothed and those who’ve been scorned are out for revenge. Can their new found love keep them together or will their enemies tear them apart?

September, 1297
Northern EnglandArbella de Mowbray contemplated running away. The forest was conveniently to her left and still thick with leaves. Perhaps she could join a ring of outlaws hidden within the imposing foliage. She shifted restlessly on her mare, arranging her skirts first one way and then another. The horse responded with an annoyed snort. If only she weren’t with a dozen guards and her father.

“Oh, hush, Bitsy,” she scoffed. The animal had no idea what was at stake here.

Anything would be better than permanently leaving England—and for Scotland! The land of heathens, barbarians… Oh, the horrors she’d heard went on there! The men ate their young. The warriors kept the bones of their victims tied to their beards. The horses were trained to sniff out an English lady and trample her to death. The women were witches. The children ran naked, even in the dead of winter. And the winters, how could she forget? No person of truly English blood could survive one.

She was glad that her maid Glenda had told her all she needed to know of Scotland. Although she could have done without the woman’s tears and fainting when Arbella asked her to join her on the journey. As a result, her old maid was not with her—in fact none of the female servants at Mowbray Manor would accompany her. She was alone, without help. Not that she needed help, but it would have been nice when she arrived in a foreign country to have someone with her from home. And while her father promised her husband would provide a maid, that maid would be Scots.

She would die before the new year—either from frostbite or at the hands of the dreaded Scots.

Now granted, her father said she would be marrying an English baron, but that mattered little. They would still reside in Scotland. And no doubt her baron husband would be just as brutal, if not more so, than the savages she’d heard tales of. Indeed, he would have to be if he kept them all tightly reined in. She knew little of her intended. Never met the man. Never heard any stories. He was a mystery. She discounted the things her father told her. He only honeyed the character of Marmaduke Stewart, hoping to sweeten the horror of her upcoming nuptials.

Arbella shivered, and rubbed her cloak-covered arms, contemplating the forest along the edge of the road. Late in the afternoon, the sun was hidden behind the trees making the road to Scotland chilly. A slight breeze blew, wrenching her hood from her head and pulling a few strands of hair from her tight chignon. Arbella tucked the hair back into the knot and pulled her hood over her ears. She hated the cold. Death might take her before the week was out. She’d no doubt shiver like mad in her new bed since the Scots abhorred warming their homes by fire. Another fact from Glenda. One thing was certain—she didn’t want to die anytime soon.

ON TOUR~~JANE GREY~~NINA MASON

Today we’re celebrating the release of Jane Grey, an historical romance in the style of the classics by Nina Mason. Set in France’s Loire Valley in 1850, Jane Grey tells the story of a frustrated painter and a beleaguered English governess who comes to France to tutor a flirtatious young heiress in the social graces. Jane Grey meets Matthew Brontë when he takes a spill from his horse near where she is walking—the same way Jane Eyre met Mr. Rochester in the book our Jane is reading at the time. Jane finds it uncannier still that Matthew is a cousin to the author of Jane Eyre.

As the weeks pass, Jane and Matthew discover they have many shared interests. They seem perfect for each other apart from one significant snag: Matthew cannot marry without forfeiting his fortune, and Jane can only marry a man with the means to support her and her dependent relations back in England.

Will the strength of Jane and Matthew’s devotion be enough to overcome this seemingly unsolvable dilemma? Or will Jane be forced to choose her duty to her family over her own greatest desire?

Jane Grey is an original work with subtle shadings borrowed from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey.

Here’s the blurb:
Matthew Brontë, a true romantic at heart, believes the only happiness in life is to love and be loved. And yet, he fears he lacks the capacity to love…until he meets Jane Grey. Jane, a humble English governess, seems perfect for Matthew, apart from one significant snag: Jane can only marry a man of means and Matthew must give up his fortune if and when he marries.

When faced with the choice between love and money, which will each of them choose?

Here’s an excerpt:

“If you don’t mind my asking, was your relationship with the countess an affectionate one?”

“Hardly.”

Matthew’s candor pleased Jane on more than one level. “So, you didn’t love her?”

After an extended silence, he said, looking pained, “To be truthful, Miss Grey, I’ve never loved any woman—and often doubt myself capable of experiencing that most-coveted of emotions.”

His words crushed her hopes and brought more tears to her eyes. “Surely, you are wrong. For you strike me as a man of great passion.”

“I used to be.” His countenance grew even more sullen. “But now, my heart is like a tree in winter. Barren, leafless, and encrusted with ice.”

“Perhaps it will thaw when you meet the right woman,” she offered hopefully.

He brought his face very close to hers and, for a breathless moment, she thought he meant to kiss her. Instead, he said in a strained voice, “I probably should keep this to myself, but my cold heart has warmed some since making your acquaintance.”

For several hellish-yet-heavenly moments, they sat together in silence. His mouth was so close to hers she could feel his breath warming her lips. As her heart leapt toward him, her body impulsively followed. Their mouths met ever so sweetly. Then, mortified by her forwardness, she jerked back and turned away.

“Forgive me. I shouldn’t have been so presumptuous.”

“There’s nothing to forgive,” he said. “I rather liked the feel of your mouth on mine.”

She liked the feel of his, too—very much indeed—but carrying on like a common hussy would only lead to her ruin. “Perhaps we should return to the house and see if Cécile’s headache is any better.”

“Yes,” he said with audible strain. “Perhaps we should at that.”

He stood and offered her his arm. She took his coat sleeve between her gloved hands and let him lead her farther along the path. After they’d walked several paces, he said, “I don’t believe I’ve yet asked your favorite flower.”

“No, you haven’t.”

He waited a few moments before letting out a small laugh. “Will you not tell me what it is?”

“Very well.” She released a sigh. “I shall tell you. As queer as it may seem, my favorite flower is bleeding heart.”

He laughed, drew to a stop, and freed his arm from her grasp. Turning toward the bed to their right, he bent over the boxwood border and plucked several stems of the flower she’d named. Then, he offered the bouquet to her with a gallant bow. “Please allow me to offer you this humble token of my admiration.”

She accepted the flowers with joy in her heart. It was foolish, perhaps, to experience so much elation in response to so simple an offering, but no man had ever given her anything before. He’d also demonstrated tremendous compassion when she told him about her family—and had admitted to liking the brief intimacy they’d shared.

Might he have some feelings for her? Or was he just being kind? Oh—and what about his secret? She must take care not to let him turn her head, lest she end up brokenhearted when the truth came out.

MY THOUGHTS:

Jane Grey: A Homage to the Brontë Classics (The Brontë Brothers Book 1) by Nina Mason, set in the Loire Valley, France and England in 1850.
In “Jane Grey” the reader will be shocked and thrilled by the similarities between the story of “Jane Eyre” to Matthew Brontë and Jane Grey. Matthew is the cousin of the author of “Jane Eyre” books.

A story of a frustrated painter, and a “kept” man and a beleaguered English governess who comes to France as a teacher, to a young heiress, thus meets Matthew, in much the same manner as Jane Eyre met her Mr. Rochester, except Jane ran away from and her feelings for Matthew until she just couldn’t possibly run anymore.

Readers will also find a slight departure from Nina Mason’s other stories. Masterfully written, I felt, anyway.
This is a story of disappointment, fortitude, unwavering love, hardship, the difficulties of a painter, in the 1850’s, and the romance of the century.
Can wealth come before love? If you had a choice between weath or love, which would you choose love or the money? A delimma for most, especially when you meet the love of your life.
“The only happiness in life is to love and be loved.”, my favorite passage.

“Jane Grey” has many avenues for which to take the reader on, here’s just a few, forfeiting a fortune but never marry, never marry unless the spouse can provide for the other’s dependent family, or throw all away for marriage, love and finding a HEA.

I found “Jane Grey” to be endearing and romantic with a bit of a sad side. I enjoyed watching Matthew and Jane find their joy and contentment. Don’t be mistaken, in “Jane Grey”, while the story has similarities, this story takes a few twists, turns, with a few surprises along the way, lingering doubts and and a round about detour to happiness.

Ms. Mason is a talented author and once again, her talent shines through with the telling of “Jane Grey”. She never disappoints her readers in her plots, her characterizations, or her details. I’m truly excited for this new adventure. I hope readers will enjoy reading “Jane Grey”, it truly makes you wish to read “Jane Eyre” after all these years. Yes, I haven’t read it since high school! This story is definitely a departure from her other stories. The passion is not explicit nor over done, if that makes sense. I throughly enjoyed “Jane Grey” and I think you will as well.

Fans of the “Brontë Classics” will surely enjoy “Jane Grey”, with unusual circumstances, contentment and finally finding true love, what’s not to enjoy. This is an incredible story by Nina Mason! I can’t wait to read the next installment in what promises to be an amazing series.
Bravo, Ms.Mason!! Well done, indeed!

ROGUES TO RICHES ON TOUR~~LORD OF PLEASURE~~ ERICA RIDLEY

In the Rogues to Riches historical romance series, Cinderella stories aren’t just for princesses… Sigh-worthy Regency rogues sweep strong-willed young ladies into whirlwind romance with rollicking adventure.”

EXCERPT:

Breathless, Camellia gazed up into Lord X’s fathomless black mask. She could not see his eyes. Even his brow was hidden. There was no way to know what expression he wore. Nothing to go on except the words he spoke. Yet there could be no other answer to his query.

Bolder. She had longed to be bolder, yearned to be someone else since the moment she realized it was too late to change her personality. Dahlia was forceful, Bryony was fearless, but Camellia watched from the shadows. Looking out for her sisters. Being a good girl. A proper young lady. Minding every one of high society’s interminable rules as if the price for bending them was death. Perhaps the cost of denying her own desires was just as dear.

She was tired of being perfect. The only way to never break a rule, to avoid disappointing anyone’s expectations, was to never do anything at all. That wasn’t life at all.

Yet who was at fault? If she was nothing more substantial than a music box, nothing but a dutiful automaton respectable enough to possess an Almack’s voucher and too terrified to use it, then it was because she had let herself be programmed that way.

She wanted to change. Needed to. Perhaps it wouldn’t be for the better, but it would be more authentic—she would be more herself—if once in a while she did what she wanted, instead of molding to the wishes of everyone around her.

“Bolder,” she repeated. “I want to be bolder. It’s the one thing about my life I would alter.”

“I can grant you that wish.” He pushed his goblet away and sprang to his feet. “Be fearless here. Tonight. With me.”

He held out his hand.

Simultaneously hopeful and nervous, she placed her fingers in his.

“Whatever it is that you want, you need only be bold enough to ask.” He pulled her to him.

Her heart pounded so loudly, she feared he could feel it through his layers of shirt and waistcoat.

“What do you want?” he asked softly. “Be bold. Let me give it to you.”

What did she want, here, with him? She closed her eyes and let the night be her guide.

Now that they were no longer nestled on a woolen blanket, the breeze was cool against her bare upper arms… but not overly so. The warmth from Lord X’s body heated her whether they were lying prone or standing chest-to-chest beneath the moonlight.

The scent of his breath so close to her lips was as sweet as the wine they had shared. The sounds of the night—if indeed there were any other than the thundering of her heart—were eclipsed by the siren call of the orchestra, whose seductive waltz spilled out through the open doorways and up from the balcony overlooking the garden to kiss their feet, even out here on the roof.

She opened her eyes. There was only one answer. One thing among the many she’d never done that he alone could give her. Without scandal. Tonight.

“I want to waltz,” she admitted hesitantly. “But…”

He shook his head. “With me, you never have to justify yourself or your desires. I will never say no.”

Her breath caught at his words. “Why?”

“Because I want to be the reason for the sparkles in your eyes.” His husky voice was intoxicating. “You want to waltz? We waltz.”

He took her hand and turned toward the stairs.

She held her ground.

He looked over his shoulder. Though the expression behind his mask was a mystery, every inch of his posture asked a silent question.

“Here,” she said. Boldly. “I want to waltz here. Where it’s just you and me and the stars.”

He stepped forward and took her into his arms without another word.

At first, she thought he might kiss her. Her heart thumped. She was pressed tight against him, her lips tilted up toward the sensual line of his mouth.

And then he took her hand in his and swung her in time to the music.

Her pulse thrilled at his touch. Never had a moment been so magical as dancing across a rooftop in the arms of a dashing stranger. The wind whipped through her hair, tugging tendrils free from her careful chignon, fluttering the ruby silk of her skirt about her legs.

None of that mattered. All she cared about was the hand holding hers. The warmth of his fingers against the small of her back. The strength in his arms, his body, as he whirled her from one stunning night view of London to another.

The night was crisp but his embrace heated her to her core. She could no longer feel her feet flying across the roof to their private rhythm, or the whispery material of her gown fluttering against her silk stockings in the breeze.

All she could feel were her trembling fingers tucked against his warm palm, the strength of his arm tucked about her waist, her lips curving into the widest, most unabashed smile she’d ever experienced.

This was life!

Every part of him was danger and romance and adventure. He transported her not just from one soaring section of the roof to another, but to an alternate world. One in which she was exactly the woman she pretended to be. Carefree and wild and bubbling with joy at the consuming, heady sensation of being truly, completely, wonderfully alive.

Being in his arms stole her breath, yet gave her strength. He did not look through her as so many men had done throughout her life, but rather as though he could not look anywhere else. As if the sight of her in his embrace was so entrancing, so intoxicating, that he too had forgotten everything and everyone until all that remained was the two of them. Their bodies entwined in a waltz that found its music in their very souls.

Tonight she wouldn’t run away at midnight. She would dance in his arms until dawn.

Erica Ridley is a USA Today and New York Times best-selling author of historical romance novels.

In the new Rogues to Riches historical romance series, Cinderella stories aren’t just for princesses… Sigh-worthy Regency rogues sweep strong-willed young ladies into whirlwind rags-to-riches romance with rollicking adventure.

The popular Dukes of War series features roguish peers and dashing war heroes who return from battle only to be thrust into the splendor and madness of Regency England.

MY THOUGHTS:

LORD OF PLEASURE by Erica Ridley is another pleasurable Historical Romance from this author. #2 in her exciting “Rogues to Riches” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, “Lord of Chance”.

Miss Camellia Grenville, the “good girl”, and Michael, Lord Wainwright, the infamous and rakish “bad boy”, have chemistry that simply sparks off the pages of this  irresistible story.  A whirlwind relationship to be sure.

The characters are well-rounded, well-developed, and very engaging.  The plot flows smoothly and continuously, with a little bit of naughtiness, a scandalous masquerade party and of course, a rake who needs redeeming. I was pulled into “Lord of Pleasure” from the first page and continued throughout this amazing story. Cinderella has nothing on Camellia. I absolutely loved Camellia and Michael. While, I can’t say their story is one of purity, I can say it was engaging and beautifully written. The reader will find the “Lord of Pleasure”, to be entertaining, engaging, interesting and scandalously intriguing. You gotta love an amazing and fantastic Historical Romance. I can’t say enough about Ms. Ridley, her writing is masterfully and brilliantly written, to hold readers entrapped and enticed in the pages of a good romance. A must read!! Another well done story by the amazing Erica Ridley!

I can’t wait to read the next “Rogues to Riches” story, “Lord of Night”, coming June 23, 2017.

MY THOUGHTS:

My One True Highlander by Suzanne Enoch is book 2 in the amazing “No Ordinary Hero” series, but can be read as a stand alone. Set in 1812 Scotland.

This is the story about, Lady Marjorie Forrester, who is the sister of, the Duke of Lattimer, from book 1. Graeme, a rugged Highlaner, who protects his clan and his younger siblings, fiercely and honorable. Soon finds he has more to lose then his lands, his clan and his brothers, he could lose his heart to the fierce, but determined, Marjorie.

Fast paced with well-developed, and engaging characters and an intriguing and captivating plot. Who doesn’t enjoy a kidnapping, by a few young lads, danger, romance, passion and the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Oh, I forgot to mention the witty banter, the loyalty, star crossed lovers, the humor, the colorful characters and the passionate sparks that fly between Marjorie and Graeme. What’s not to enjoy, absolutely nothing was left to be wanting in “My One True Highlander.”

Suzanne Enoch has a talent for pulling readers into her stories and holding them captivated. I was instantly captured by Marjorie and Graeme’s story. Graeme’s brothers were so endearing, especially, his youngest brother, Connell, an absolute joy to read about his antics. The love between the brothers is palpable and endearing, they made my heart soar with their undying loyalty to their older brother, Graeme, who has taken care of them since their parents’ passing.

Ms. Enoch has written a story that is a true treasure and a definite keeper. Highly recommended! I absolutely loved this story with many facets, twists and turns and a few surprises.
I read this fantastic story in one setting, it was a page turner, to me. I look forward to reading more from Suzanne Enoch. A simply must read Scottish Romance.

MY THOUGHTS:

Taming a Rake into a Lord (Taming the Heart, #4)

Taming A Rake Into A Lord by Tammy Andresen is a quick, and exciting Victorian read. While, Book 4 in “Taming the Heart” series, but can be read as a stand alone.

Christopher Masters, rake, retired spy, and newly Earl of Winthrop. Lady Elizabeth, when the new Earl arrives, she learns she must marry within a year or lose her inheritance, as well, as a new earl will replace, Chris. There is a young ward, a child, Elizabeth and her father has been taking care of, what will be her faith, if Elizabeth marries.  Chris decides he must find Elizabeth. Then he learns,  Bernard Sinclair, her despicable distant cousin, has been trying to persuade her to marry him. There is something about Bernard that makes Lizzie’s skin crawl. Bernard will stop at nothing to have Lizzie and her inheritance.

Fast paced, quick read, approximately 165 pages, but very entertaining, with engaging and well-developed characters. The plot was intriguing with elements of mystery, drama, action, a bit of suspense, lots of romance and hot sexy passion. Oh, and a bit of humor weaved throughout the story.  I truly enjoyed Chris and Lizzie’s story. A refreshing tale of Victorian Romance with twist and turns!

Ms. Andresen is a talented author. One that draws the reader into her story and hold them in  awe. I read this in one reading, couldn’t stop until I reached the last page. Well worth the time to read! Perfect for a lazy afternoon! I can’t wait to read more of Tammy Andersen and her delicious stories. Highly recommended! Fans of Victorian Romance, Historical Romance, great characters, the antics of young children, passion and the love of family and a HEA, will definitely enjoy, “Taming a Rake into a Lord”. Well done, Ms. Andresen!

SPOTLIGHT with #REVIEW~~THE GATEHOUSE~~BECCA ST. JOHN

A deaf aristocrat fights to protect all he loves from a killer he cannot hear

Moments before the wedding, Christopher Sterry finds the groom, his twin brother, murdered. One would expect Christopher to become the next Earl of Longford. No one would be surprised if he married his twin’s almost-bride, Helen Grove. She is, after all, his closest friend and confidante.

Except Christopher is deaf in an inflexible world that believes a deaf mute is no better than a barbaric half-wit, unfit to be an earl and quite capable of murdering his brother.

Helen waits at the altar while her groom lies murdered in the folly. But there is no time to mourn. Christopher is in danger and so, it appears, is she.  Born to marry the earl of Longford, whoever that may be, Helen ignores her own risks and crosses into the line of fire to protect the man who holds her heart.

Lady Eleanor solves crimes more thoroughly than any male magistrate. So when Christopher, her godson, is condemned without evidence, she sets out to prove both his innocence and his competence as earl. If she fails, Christopher will die… or be returned to an asylum worse than hell.

About the author…..

An Accidental Writer ~

Writing was a tool, not a toy, until a stay in a haunted hotel and a bookcase full of dog-eared romances. Hooked, Becca read old romances, new romances, both sexy and sweet, until her own tales begged to be written.

Living in Florida, Becca divides her time between dreaming up stories, diving deep into history, kayaking, and swimming. Her husband gives her the space she needs by fishing in the mangroves and waterways, or watching football (the English sort) with his British buddies. Becca and her hubby break the routine with adventure travel; though, at heart, Becca is a homebody believing there is no greater playground than inside the mind.

MY THOUGHTS

THE GATEHOUSE by Becca St. John is an extraordinary Regency Romance. Book 2 in her amazing  “Lady Eleanor Mysteries” series, can be read as a stand alone. See, “Summerton”, book 1.

What a unique story, a deaf hero, Christopher Sterry, the possible next Earl of Longford, after his brother and twin is murdered on what was supposed to be his wedding day and Helen Grove, his brother’s almost bride, his best friend and confidante. But will Christopher’s disability cause him more harm, or will his peers be able to accept him for what he really is, a capable, deaf mute in an incapable world, or will he lose all, and be condemned as a murderer, because of his disability.  Helen puts herself in the sights of a killer, and to save the man who holds her heart. Enter…..Christopher’s god mother, Lady Eleanor, who solves crime better than any man could do, and is determined to prove her god son’s innocence and his competence to be the next Earl of Longford.  Or will Christopher be sent back to an asylum?

Fast paced and very impressive. I loved how Ms. St. John interweaves Christopher’s disability into the story, into the plot in a realistic way, without deeming the hero as incompetent. She also emphasised how Christopher reads lips and uses an interpreter . Well done! The reader can tell how much research and hard work went into developing Christopher’s character. I loved how Christopher’s god mother, Lady Eleanor, and Helen supported his innocence and how they supported him throughout the story.

Ms. St. John, took a story that had many complications and made it her own. Whew, she has written a masterfully and brilliant story. This story has so much to offer readers in this complicated, but well thought out story. A page turner for sure! Bravo, Becca St. John. You don’t want to miss “The Gatehouse”. An absolutely must read Regency Romance with a touch of Gothic intrigue.  A unique story with some very unique characters and a very different plot. Enjoyable and satisfying read.

Excerpt

Ambrose Worthing was attending a country dance.

The notion was laughable. He, a glorified rakehell with a distaste for country life, was currently entrapped in a bloody assembly room that could pass for a barn on better days. In fact, as he glanced around the room, he decided it most certainly resembled a farmyard at the moment, with the gaggle of society mamas squawking like geese, their turbans festooned with tall ostrich plumes.

He groaned when he saw them scrutinizing him, whispering behind their fans, their eyes dancing over his form as they assessed his marital suitability. From the clever smiles he glimpsed, he knew they were ready to throw their innocent daughters at his feet.

Like bloody hell. He was not about to find himself accidentally “compromising” any of the young ladies here tonight. He’d come here tonight to find one particular young woman to seduce her, to win a bet he’d made in London the previous week, and hopefully save her. He was not about to let the gathering of society mamas intimidate him into dancing with their daughters, even if they rivaled the great ancient Mongolian Golden Horde led by Genghis Khan. Many a rake had fallen under their wiles, surfacing months later to find themselves stuck with a shy chit of a girl as a wife and an obnoxious mother-in-law.

At twenty-nine years old, he’d managed to weather many attempts by his friends and relatives to see him settled. If those who loved him could not bring him to the altar, no silly chits from the country would have any success either. He was a permanent bachelor, and he liked it. Marriage was not made for men like him. To be tied down with one woman for the rest of his life and suffer the trappings of home and hearth when he could be exploring the world and living? Heavens no, he would not give up his freedom for anything.

A few daring matchmaking mamas separated from the crowd and walked in his direction. Damnation, even the need for a master of ceremonies to perform introductions wouldn’t stop these women.

Ambrose spun on his heel, desperate to avoid conversation. If he had to listen to one more story about how well their daughters played the pianofortes or how accomplished they were at needlepoint, he’d run from the assembly hall screaming.

He had met almost everyone present at the dance and had no desire to continue any of the acquaintances. He was only here because of the wager placed in a betting book at White’s. A damned fool named Gerald Langley had put down in the books that anyone who plucked the fruit of this girl’s vine would receive five thousand pounds from him. Langley was a brute with little in the way of good sense and far too much coin. Ambrose had no idea why Langley had it in for the Earl of Rockford’s daughter, but he did. After reading the bet, Ambrose had penned his name to the challenge and notified Langley he had accepted the wager.

For once in his life he was trying to do the right thing by a woman. It was a bit ironic, though, that saving the woman required compromising her. But the Earl of Rockford and his father had been friends, and Ambrose felt he owed it to Rockford to win the wager and keep the lady safe from true scoundrels. No other man would take the care with her that he would and see to it that her first time with a man was a pleasurable experience.

He had one month to seduce Rockford’s daughter and provide proof of this seduction in London. As the lady in question had never been to London, there was much speculation among the men at his club whether she was a diamond of the first water or a dowdy creature. The betting book listed her age as twenty-two, young enough not to be an ape leader, a nasty term for women nearing spinsterhood.

Apparently Rockford wasn’t one for traditions. Any father wishing to ensure his daughter’s future would have brought her to London at seventeen or eighteen, had her presented to the queen, and then made the round of balls to hunt for a husband.

Yet Rockford had not done any of that. He’d kept his daughter in the country, living a quiet life. An unplucked fruit to tempt the worst sort of men in White’s to bet upon the taking of her maidenhead for their own amusement.

Normally Ambrose had little desire to compete in wagers, especially ones which involved the corruption of innocents. It was not out of some moral principle, but rather a dislike of virgins. They tended to fall in love and cling to the man who took their innocence. But after witnessing the sort of men discussing whether to take the bet that night, Ambrose decided he would do this innocent lady a favor. He’d penned his name in the books, taking up the wager, and sent a letter to Rockford, renewing their acquaintance.

A letter from Rockford arrived only a few days later, inviting Ambrose to this ball and to spend a few weeks at Rockford’s home as a guest. It was the perfect opportunity for Ambrose to cozy up to the man’s daughter and see what sort of creature he would soon be bedding.

If only he knew what the lady looked like. In the chaotic din full of dancing and music, he could not find a single young lady among the crush that he was willing to bed. It wasn’t that the young ladies weren’t attractive. They were, but none were to his taste. Innocent young ladies had never appealed to him. If his friend Gareth Fairfax had been there, Gareth would have been laughing at him. Gareth was stuck in his own hell—the poor fool was happily married. Married! Ambrose couldn’t think of anything more terrifying than being stuck with one woman for the rest of his life. Helen was a darling creature and perfectly suited to Gareth, and Ambrose supposed it would be not too terrible to share a bed with a woman like her. But still, to be leg-shackled? I would rather die in a thousand unspeakable ways than stand in a bloody church and tie myself to one woman for the rest of my days.
