MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about yourself?

WIGU: Wigu Publishing came from a grassroots effort of three creative, talented and risk taking minds that believe in the significance of childhood dreams.  Barron, born and raised in Southern California, is a chronic entrepreneur with a passion for publishing.  Barron believes in creating a brand that he is not only passionate about, but in the end will have a lasting impact in communities around the world.  Mark brings to the table a vast corporate experience in writing and illustrating and grew up emulating great writers and thinkers.  Kim, Wigu’s Director of Communications and Marketing believes strongly in the book series and finds a way to manage her busy schedule of kids, home, work, and marketing for Wigu books.  Kim’s national marketing background and desire to create a positive change makes her the perfect fit to the team.  The Wigu team not only brings a strong background in the publishing, writing and marketing arenas, but ultimately believes in providing content to children that is not currently available and to create an understating of how education can directly relate to a passion, understanding and a career path for kids.

MBA&M: What inspired you to write Children’s books?

WIGU: The inspiration for Wigu books ultimately spans from Barron’s list of dreams and ideas that he continually creates and brings to fruition.  Barron found that the marketplace was absent from books that spoke to the concept of careers and found his long time friend and colleague, Mark, to be the perfect match for the ultimate vision of Wigu.  Mark’s experience in writing and illustrating, coupled with his five grandchildren, continue to be an inspiration for his characters and story writing.  As the team says, “We hope to give our young children the tools to help them dream longer and to give them a basic understanding of what their childhood dream actually means…and maybe even the opportunity to explore these dreams and make them a reality.”

MBA&M: Why a series on “When I Grow Up…”?

WIGU: The When I Grow Up series was honestly a “no brainer.”  After extensive research on the topic, all three founders realized that the children’s book marketplace was completely bare of serious books relating to careers… something most young children dream about daily. In a day in age when educating our youth is at the forefront, we seem to miss the “big picture” of what children need in order to conceptually understand what they aspire to be when they grow up.  Furthermore, children continue to have misconceptions about careers and Wigu provides a concrete and realistic understanding of a multitude of careers.  Ultimately, the team believes in providing quality content to children that will provide them the inspiration to one day choose a responsible career. The books do not just put every child into one “mold”.  These books provide an opportunity for every child to visualize their early passion in life.

MBA&M: How many books will be in this series?

WIGU: We are realistic when it comes to the books we publish.  We will strive to provide realistic and in depth content for children, and recognize the endless opportunities available when it comes to this genre of books for children.  Our goal is to create quality literature and provide as many opportunities possible for children to explore, as well as to promote a solid foundation for goodness and respect for our communities, environment and society as a whole.

MBA&M: Can you tell our readers a few tidbits into your journey to being published?

WIGU: Like many creative start-ups, our journey began from a vision, then a passion, and finally an understanding of what was needed in the children’s educational arena.  In an age where children are in the monotonous routine of attending school each day, reading text books, doing homework and told they will go to college, but ultimately do not understand “what for.” It is just amazing to us how a young child’s dream disappears and how life begins to consume them. Wigu hopes to bridge this gap and help to create an understanding of WHY am I doing this and how do I get there?

MBA&M: What would you advise aspiring authors to do first and foremost in their writing career?

WIGU: First and foremost, aspiring authors must be passionate about the subject matter and know who their audience (the reader) is.  Readers, whether young or old, will know immediately if the author is following this basic guideline. For Wigu, we are bonded by this quality, and take it to the next required step, by combining the perfect combination of vision and research.  While Barron continues to expound “research, research, research”, Mark believes that “the rule for writing books is that “there is no rule.” This ying and yang combination provides for a perfect opportunity for give and take, and ultimately for success.

MBA&M:  What does writing a book encompass for you telling your story?

For Wigu, it’s all about understanding where children are at.  What problems do children face? Do they lack confidence in certain areas?  How do they handle diversity at their age?  What fears do they have?  What happens during recess or at the soccer field?  We try to tailor our books to address these issues in a realistic fashion as part of our dialog.  We feel that our books are more than just about careers… there are life lessons in every book we will publish. But ultimately, we view our books as “thank you notes” to others for what they do on our behalf.

MBA&M: Who would you say inspired you the most to write Children’s books?  Why?

WIGU: Wigu was, and is, inspired by our own vision. We feel that we need to speak up for people that can’t speak for themselves, namely, our children.

Thank you so much for your inspiration, and your willingness to provide and inspire Children with wonderful, creative, and educational material!!
