USA Today bestselling author Madeline Martin delivers a captivating novel of passion and intrigue…

Connor Grant is in search of a lady. Not a bride, but a woman to become a skillful and seductive spy in the service of King James. In addition to being the King’s personal assassin, Connor heads a group of female spies who aid him in his work, women with nothing left to lose.

Ariana Fitzroy is the perfect mark. Destitute, orphaned, and completely alone, she’s missed her chance at an advantageous match at court and cheats at cards to survive. When Connor catches her in the act, he threatens to expose her, unless she joins his elite roster of spies.

She agrees and is whisked away to a deserted Scottish castle to begin her training. Ariana quickly takes to her lessons in seduction, deception, and hand-to-hand combat, but less easy to fight are her feelings of lust toward the ruggedly handsome Connor, feelings she suspects may be reciprocated.

When Connor recruits her help on a mysterious task, the pair must work together to track a dangerous target. But Ariana suspects Connor isn’t telling her everything—not just about the mission, but also about his past. Will the secrets between them threaten their mission? And will they be able to fight their attraction as they wonder who they can trust?

Highland Spy: Mercenary Maidens Series, Book 1 by Madeline Martin definitely shows craftsmanship in writing a mesmerizing Medieval Scottish Romance. Book 1 promises readers an exciting thrill ride into the “Mescenary Maidens” series. WOW! Set in a delapicated castle in Scotland and at the English court.

Ariana Fitzroy, after losing her family and her fortune, resorts to card games at court to survive, which she thinks she has the capability of winning. Connor Grant, is a trainer of fallen women from the English court and a broken personal assassin to the king. Which is where he encounters Ariana, cheating at cards, he gives her the option of going to prison or going with him in training. Of course, she accepts his offer. This is how she becomes his newest trainee.

“Highland Spy” is emotionally charged, intriguing, mesmerizing and utterly captivating! It has second chances, betrayal, challenges, female spies, claiming an inheritance once stolen, retribution, facing the consequences life has dealt head on, overcoming hopelessness to become confident, strong, and of course, romance and finding love. But will Ariana and Connor find their HEA or lose all to lies and deception?
The secondary characters are as enticing as the hero/heroine. They are very intriguing and makes the reader wish to learn more of their circumstances and how they became spies. This story has twists and turns, and surprises I didn’t see coming, betrayals I never preserved until the evil was encountered. I was captivated from the first few pages to the last page and beyond. Two of Scottish romance’s most loved authors have joined pens to write a thrilling new time travel series filled with passion, danger, and intrigue. These never-before-published novels will sweep you to Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic is real, time is relevant, and there is no escape from desire…

Men are disappearing in the Highland crofting village of Heatheredge. The authorities suspect foul play, but without signs of violence—or bodies—they can’t prove a thing.

World champion swordsman Cailean Ross is living the fantasy of a lifetime as the victor of Heatheredge’s medieval reenactment Gathering. But when the fantasy turns into reality, swordplay becomes a fight to the death and he finds himself among the ‘missing’ statistics.

Julianna Mackay flees a man she fears is an evil wizard and literally runs into handsome Cailean Ross. Cailean defends Lady Julianna from her attackers. Together, they set out in search of the key to a six-hundred-year-old curse that can only be broken in medieval Scotland.

When the veil of time is lifted, Cailean and Julianna find that love may not be enough to save them or those they hold dear.

WOW! Brilliantly written, fast paced, the characters are enticing, alluring and utterly captivating, the storyline is utterly intriguing. Set in England and Scotland!

Lady Rosamond is pledged to a Lowlander as an alliance between Scotland and England, but someone has tried to kidnapped her once. Enter….Finn Sutherland, as her “Highland Bodyguard”, sent by Robert the Bruce. He is brooding, with a dark heart, but gentle as well, once you get to know him.

Together Rosamond and Finn must face danger, near tragedy, their growing attraction to each other and their hearts. Will family, honor, duty or their hearts win this battle to find their HEA? Or will they lose all to the danger that lurks?

Many twists and turns with a few surprises along the way, danger lurking in an expected place, mystery, suspense, intrigue, a battle of hearts versus duty, honor and family.

Once again, Ms. Prince has written a tale that not only captivates but transfixes the reader into another era and definitely holds you intrigued from beginning to end.
I can’t wait to read more of this captivating and intriguing “Highland Bodyguards” series.

Ms. Prince has fast become one of my all-time favorite Medieval Scottish Romance authors. She never disappoints me nor ever fails to peak my interest and hold me in utter awe.
A must read for fans of Historical Romance, Scottish romance, Medieval Romance and simply an awesome read!

The Prisoner of Silverwood Castle (Darke of Night Book 2) by Marie Treanor

Date of Publication: August 16, 2016

Dead men don’t tell tales. They wail them from the top of the tallest tower.

Darke of Night, Book 2

Lady Guinevere (Guin) Harvey would much rather be writing gothic tales of intrigue and adventure than dancing attendance on her sister, the newly married Duchess of Silberwald. Until they arrive at Silberwald Castle, a place of enchanting perfection—and gothic shadows.

Ghostly groans and clanking chains lead Guin through ancient, misshapen passages to one of the castle’s many mysteries: a cell where the odd but charming Kasimir is kept chained like an animal. He could be a figment of her vivid dreams, the ghost of a dead, mad prince, or just a political prisoner no one wants to talk about.

Desperate to discover what beast is howling such soul-chilling cries, Guin summons the medium Barbara Darke. But by the time Barbara arrives, Guin can no longer distinguish dream from reality, friend from enemy. Even with all Barbara’s unique talents, they have to face new dangers before they finally discover the terrifying truth of Silberwald Castle.

The Marshal CoverChapter One from The Marshal

This was a switch.
Deputy U.S. marshal Brent Thompson stood in a Chicago hotel ballroom among a throng of impeccably dressed political big shots that, for once, he didn’t have to protect.
Tonight, he was a guest.
Whether that made him happy or not was anyone’s guess. But he’d stay another hour for Judge Kline, a woman he’d spent two years watching over after her husband and children were murdered by some nut who’d been on the losing end of a ruling. Judge Kline had ordered him to pay a $1,200 fine and somehow he was mad enough to wipe out her entire family, leaving her to deal with guilt and rage and heartache.
Sometimes—sometimes? Really?—Brent didn’t understand people. Or maybe it was their motivations he didn’t understand, but the human race baffled him.
Tonight Judge Kline, who’d refused to allow her life to collapse under grief, was smiling. A welcome sight since her eighty-five-year-old mother had decided to throw one hell of a shindig for the judge’s sixtieth birthday.
Brent turned and found the ever-polished Gerald Hennings, Chicago’s highest-profile defense attorney, weaving through the crowd. Accompanying him was a petite blonde in a floor-length bright blue gown. She had to be over fifty, but may have had a little work done to preserve her extraordinary looks. Her perfect cheekbones, the big blue eyes and sculpted nose were duplicates of the ones Brent recognized from Hennings’s daughter, Penny. Didn’t take a genius to figure out this woman was Mrs. Hennings. Brent held his hand out. “Mr. Hennings. Nice to see you.”
Five months earlier, Brent had been assigned to protect Penny Hennings after yet another nut—plenty of nuts in his world—had attempted to kill her on the steps of a federal courthouse. Penny had nearly put Brent into a psych ward with her relentless mouthiness and aggressive attitude, but he’d formed a bond with her. A kinship. And, much like Judge Kline, they’d remained friends after his assignment had ended. For whatever reason, emotionally speaking, he couldn’t let either one of them go. The fact that they’d all experienced tragedy might be the common denominator, but he chose not to think too hard about it. What was the point? None of them would ever fully recover from their individual experiences. All they could do was move on.
Hennings turned to the woman at his side. “I don’t think you’ve met my wife, Pamela. Pam, this is Marshal Brent Thompson. He was the marshal.”
She smiled and—yep—he was looking at Penny in twenty-five years.
“I know,” Mrs. Hennings said. She stepped forward and gripped both of his arms. “Thank you.”
The gesture, so direct and heartfelt, caught him sideways and he stiffened. Freak that he was he’d never gotten comfortable with strange women touching him. Most guys would love it. Brent? He liked his space being his.
But he stood there, allowing Penny’s mother to thank him in probably the only way she knew how. He could go on about how he’d just been doing his job, which was all true, but even he understood that he’d worked a little harder for Penny. She reminded him too much of his younger sister, Camille, and he hadn’t been able to help himself. “You’re welcome. Your daughter has become a good friend. And if I ever need legal advice, I know who to call.”
Mrs. Hennings laughed.
Mr. Hennings swooped his finger in the air. “You’re not working tonight?”
“No, sir. Judge Kline is a friend.”
“How nice,” Mrs. Hennings said.
“Yes, ma’am. I worked with her for two years. She would always tell me if my tie didn’t match. That happened a lot.”
“As the mother of two sons, I’m sure your mother appreciates that.”
Mr. Hennings cleared his throat and, in Brent’s mind, the room fell silent. He glanced around, looking for…what? Confirmation that the room at large wasn’t listening to his conversation?
All around people gabbed and mingled and pretty much ignored Brent. Imagined it. He exhaled and once again the orchestra music—something classical—replaced the fog in his brain.
He’d fielded comments about his mother almost his entire life. It should have been easier by now.
Except for the nagging.
Twenty-three years of gut-twisting, anger-fueled obsession that kept him prisoner. “My mother died when I was seven, ma’am.”
Social pro that she must have been, considering her husband’s wizardry with the press, Mrs. Hennings barely reacted. “I’m so sorry.” She turned to Gerald, shooting him the stink-eye. “I didn’t know.”
Moments like these, a guy had to step up and help his brother-in-arms. “No need to apologize. I think about her every day.” And knowing how this conversation would go, the curiosity that came with why and how such a young woman had died, Brent let it fly. “She was murdered.”
Social pro or not, Mrs. Hennings gasped. “How horrible.”
Brent sipped his club soda, gave the room another glance and came back to Mrs. Hennings. “My sister and I adjusted. We have a supportive family.”
“I hope they caught the person who did this.”
“No ma’am. It’s still an open case.”
A case that lived and breathed with him and had driven him into law enforcement. If the Carlisle sheriff’s office couldn’t find his mother’s killer, he’d do it himself.
“Are the police still looking into it?”
Brent shrugged. “If they get a tip or some new information. I work it on my downtime, but downtime is short.”
Mrs. Hennings, obviously still embarrassed by bringing up the subject of his dead mother, turned to her husband. “Can’t one of your investigators help? You do all sorts of pro bono work for clients. Why not this?”
“Pam, those are cases where we’re defending people. This is different.”
Brent held up his hand As much as he’d like help, he didn’t want a domestic war started over it. “Mrs. Hennings, it’s okay. But thank you.”
Still, down deep, Brent wanted to find the person who’d wrecked his family and had saddled him with a level of responsibility—and guilt—no seven-year-old should have known. Every day, the questions haunted him. Could he have helped her? Should he have done something when he first heard noise? Was he a crummy investigator because all these years later he still couldn’t give his mother justice?
At this point, if he couldn’t find this monster on his own, he’d take whatever help available. Ego aside, justice for his mother was what mattered.
Mrs. Hennings kept her gaze on her husband. “You were just complaining that Jenna is bored with her current assignments. After what Brent did for Penny, give Jenna his mother’s case to investigate. It’ll challenge her and keep her out of your hair. Where’s the problem?”
Hennings pressed his lips together and a minuscule, seriously minuscule, part of Brent pitied the man. If he didn’t agree with his wife, his life would be a pile of manure.
Mrs. Hennings shot her husband a meat cleaver of a look, then turned back to Brent. “My husband will call you about this tomorrow. How’s that?”
With limited options, and being more than a little afraid to argue because, hey, he was no dummy either, he grinned at Mr. Hennings. “That’d be great. Thank you.”
JENNA SLID ONTO one of the worn black vinyl bar stools at Freddie’s Tap House, a mostly empty shot-and-a-beer joint on the North Side of Chicago.
How the place stayed in business, she had no idea. On this Wednesday night the sports bar down the block was packed, while the only people patronizing Freddie’s were an elderly man sitting at the bar and a couple huddled at a table in the back.
The bartender glanced down the bar at her and wandered over. “Evening. Get you something?”
You sure can.
“Whatever’s on tap. Thanks.”
He nodded and scooped a glass from behind the bar, pouring a draft as he eyed her black blazer and the plunging neckline on her cashmere sweater. “Haven’t seen you in here before. New in town?”
As much as she’d tried to dress down with jeans, she hadn’t been able to resist the sweater. When dealing with men, a little help from her feminine wiles—also known as her boobs—never hurt. “Nope. New in here though.”
“You look more Tiffany’s than Freddie’s.”
Already Jenna liked him. “Are you Freddie?”
“Freddie Junior. My dad is Freddie. I took over when he retired.”
He slid the beer in front of Jenna. Once more she looked around, took in the polished, worn wood of the bar, the six tables along the wall and the line of empty bar stools.
“Slow night,” Freddie said.
Lucky me. She opened her purse, pulled out a fifty and set it on the bar. Next came the photo taken the week prior by a patron in this very bar. He glanced down at the fifty, then at the photo.
“I’m not a cop,” Jenna said. “I’m an investigator working for a law firm.”
She pointed at the photo of two men with a woman in the background. Jenna needed to find that woman. “Have you seen her in here?”
He picked up the photo and studied it. “Yeah. Couple of times. When a woman like that walks into a beer joint, there’s generally a reason. Kinda like you.”
Figuring it was time to put her cleavage to work, Jenna inched forward, gave him a view of the girls beneath that V-neck and smiled. Most women would love the idea that a fifteen-pound weight gain had gone straight to their chest. Jenna supposed it hadn’t hurt her ability to claw information from men—and maybe she used it to her advantage. But she also wanted to be recognized for extracting the information and not for the way she’d done it.
Did that even make sense? She wasn’t sure anymore. All she knew was her need for positive reinforcement had led her to using her looks to achieve her goals. That meant wearing clingy, revealing clothing. Such a cliché. But the thing about clichés was they worked.
“Any idea what her reason for being here was?”
Freddie took the boob-bait and leaned in. “No. Both times she met someone. Why?”
All Jenna could hope was he’d gotten the woman’s name. “My client is being held on a robbery charge. He says he was in here the night of the robbery and he met this woman. Her name is Robin.”
“Where’d you get the picture?”
“Friends of my client.”
He dropped the picture on the bar and tapped it. “Birthday party, right?”
“Yes. My client and six of his friends. Any idea where I can find her?”
“Did she pay by credit card?”
If she paid by credit card, there would be a record of the transaction, and Jenna would dig into the Hennings & Solomon coffers and pay Freddie a highly negotiated sum for a look at his credit card receipts. From there, she’d get a name and two calls later would have an address for Robin-the-mystery-woman.
Freddie may have been lying. Jenna studied him, took in his direct gaze. Not lying. At least she didn’t think so. Again with the wavering? Didn’t she have a good sense about these things? Yes, she did. For that reason she’d go with the theory that Freddie seemed to be a small-business owner who wanted to stay out of trouble while trying to make a living. She dug her card and a pen out of her purse, wrote her cell number on the card and placed it next to the fifty on the bar.
“How about I leave you my card? If she comes in again and you call me, there’s a hundred bucks in it for you.”
Freddie glanced at the card. After a moment, he half shrugged. “Sure. If I see her.”
Jenna took one last sip of her beer, slid off the stool and hitched her purse onto her shoulder. “Thanks.” She nodded toward the fifty. “Keep the change.”

THE MARSHALL by Adrienne Giordano…a review

MBA&M: Good morning Deb, welcome back to MBA&M. For those who may not know please give them a little background information on yourself as an author, mother, and wonderful Lady?

DEB: Thank you for the lovely compliment!  I count it as a high honor, coming from such lovely ladies yourselves.

Hmm..background.  I’m the mom of two teenage boys.  You know what that means!  I spend a large amount amount of time feeding boys, planning to feed boys, shopping for food to feed boys, taxiing boys to school, sports and social events, and then feeding boys again.  J  In between all of that I write Regency romances that include action and adventure and flawed characters that never give up.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “The Love List”,which by the way sounds very intriguing?

DEB: Well, have you heard of the Harris List of Covent Garden Ladies?  It was a yearly publication, a list–with descriptions–of London’s prostitutes.  I read a copy.  It was very witty and fun–but also sad.  Then my writer’s brain started what-iffing…what if someone who wasn’t supposed to be on that list ended up there?  What if it was used for revenge–and worse?  And The Love List was born!

MBA&M: What was you favorite scene in writing “The Love List”?

DEB: It’s so hard to choose!  Forced to make a choice, though, I’d have to pick the scene where Brynne finally forces the issue with Aldmere–in both a physical and emotional sense.  It’s a huge step for both of them and they handled it with laughter and tears.  I just sort of sat back and let them go.  J

MBA&M: Which secondary character do you wish could have their own book, but at this time will not?

DEB: Hestia Wright is fascinating to me.  I hope she is to readers too.  She is going to have her story, eventually, but we’ve got a lot to learn about her before then.

MBA&M: The secondary characters help to carry the story along, who was your favorite and why?

DEB: I loved Callie Grant in this story too.  She’s so strong on the outside, and fiercely protective of the few people she loves.

MBA&M: How many books are you planning to be in the famous “Half Moon House”

series? What’s next,if you can reveal that sought after information?

DEB: There are going to be at least 3 full novels and 2 novellas in the Half Moon House series.  Maybe more!

MBA&M: What was some interesting facts you found and was unaware of,that readers may be interested in knowing?

DEB: See above regarding the Harris List of Covent Garden Ladies.  Such interesting reading!  I also found a lot of fascinating info on the Royal family that will play a part in the ongoing series.

MBA&M: If you were to pick one character in all of the books you have written thus far who would it be and why?

DEB: Pick for what?  J  As a favorite?  There’s no way I could make that choice!  I’ve written reclusive anti-heroes, charming rogues, treasure hunters, designers, Evangelicals, gardeners, weapons collectors, neat freaks…and more.  I love them all!

MBA&M: What is a subject you would enjoy writing about but you have not?

DEB: I’ve never written a spy.  I think I could have a lot of fun with that.

MBA&M: Now to the good part, please tell our readers where they may find you and where they may purchase “The Love List”?

DEB: The Love List is available in ebook on the Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, Smashwords, everywhere.  It’s available in print through Amazon too.

I love to talk with readers!  You can explore my website and contact me at www.DebMarlowe.com.  I’m also on Facebook and Twitter.

British MuseumBy the way I see you have also written an anthology “An Encounter at the Museum” recently with Claudia Dain, Ava Stone, and Michelle Marcos, inquiring minds want to you, or me rather…How hard is it to write a story in an anthology with other authors? What is the best part and what was the hardest part?

Yes!  An Encounter at the Museum was such a fun piece to put together.  All of the stories involve a significant encounter at the British Museum.  My story, An Unexpected Encounter, is actually the first peek readers have into the Half Moon House series.  We had a great time sharing the history of the museum and our inspiration for our encounter spots.  The hardest part was waiting to share it!

Thanks so much for having me back, ladies!

It is always such a pleasure to have you visit with us and our readers. You have such fascinating stories to tell….

The Love List(From the author’s website)

The Harris List of Covent Garden Ladies, that wickedly witty annual register of the city’s lightskirts, was once a London tradition.  Now, as all of Europe celebrates the end of the long wars, the scheming Lord Marstoke has revived it–and transformed it into a weapon.

A List no respectable lady wishes to be on . . .

I’m the author of five novels in the Hannibal Jones Mystery Series and four in the Stark and O’Brien adventure series.  My short stories have been in six anthologies including Wolfmont Press’ Dying in a Winter Wonderland – an Independent Mystery Booksellers Association Top Ten Bestseller for 2008.  I’m featured in the Edgar nominated African American Mystery Writers: A Historical and Thematic Study by Frankie Y. Bailey.  After a career in the Army, I now handle media relations for the Defense Department.  I teach writing classes at Anne Arundel Community College and I am helping the team that will bring you the Creatures, Crimes and Creativity conference in September.  As you can see, I like to keep busy
MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind “The Ice Woman Assignment”? Is this part of a series, if so can it be read as a stand-alone?
AUSTIN:The Ice Woman Assignment is the 4th book in the Stark & O’Brien thriller series.  While the books are sequential, I believe this one can be read as a stand-alone.  I was fascinated by the idea of my heroes facing off against something as big as a drug cartel, and with how they’d deal with an enemy who had a paranormal advantage to match their own.
MBA&M: What is the allure of mystery, and intrigue, do you feel for today’s readers?
AUSTIN:I think many readers want to escape the world they live in, which is both dangerous and boring.  they want to live in a place that is filled with excitement, but also like to visit a place where the bad guys can be identified and the problems are simple enough to be solved.  Many also crave a world  where the the good guys always win and the villains get what they deserve.
MBA&M: How hard is it to write about drug smuggling, drug cartels, and where did you find your research?
AUSTIN:There’s a great deal of information in the public domain about these criminal organizations, but most of my research consists of what appears in newspapers and magazines.  I’m more interested in what they do than anything else.  A lot of the background I find easy to just make up.  The people who know the truth aren’t going to speak out that I’m wrong.
MBA&M: What where the challenges in writing this title?
AUSTIN:There were psychological aspects to this novel that were hard for me to handle at times, and for any man there is the consistent challenge of properly representing a female protagonist.  Plus, killing off a well-developed character is always hard for a writer to do.
MBA&M: Now, let’s talk about you, have you always wanted to be a writer? If not writing what would you be doing? AND What are some of  your favorite pastime activities?
AUSTIN:I was writing comic books in junior high school and have never stopped creating fiction.  I also write as a journalist for the Defense Department so if I wasn’t writing fiction I’d be doing more of that.  But it’s hard to imagine NOT writing fiction, even if I was only writing for my own amusement.  When I’m not at the keyboard I love to shoot (paper targets, not live ones like my fictional characters.)  I also love to READ a great thriller or mystery, and watch WAY too much TV.
MBA&M: Please tell our readers how to connect to you and where they may purchase your title?
AUSTIN:I welcome reader input at ascamacho@hotmail.com.  they should check my web site – www.ascamacho.com – talk to me on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/austin.camacho.author – or hit me on Twitter – @ascamacho .

My novels are available at all bookstores and if you don’t see them on the shelf, please ask them to order them.  Of course they’re always on Amazon.com

Austin, do you have anything to add?

I try to appear personally at a lot of events and mystery writer’s conferences.  I hope your readers will friend me on Facebook so they’ll know where I’ll be next because I love meeting and talking with fans.  If you’re going Bouchercon, in Albany NY, Thrillerfest in New York, Bay to Ocean in Maryland, Malice Domestic in Bethesda Maryland, Creatures, Crimes and Creativity in Baltimore Maryland, please look for me!

About the Author
Catherine Hemmerling has been a technical writer in the software industry for nearly twenty years and has published many user manuals and technical documentation in that time. She has always had a love of writing fiction but has never pursued publication in that genre until now.
Hopefully it is the beginning of a long new journey with Lady Lancaster and the Garden Society girls. Certainly historical romance (especially the scandalous kind) is more fun than writing technical documents!
This author happily resides in Tehachapi, California (near Bakersfield – home of her Alma-mater!) with her family.

Catherine writes for Entangled Publishing’s Scandalous historical line and is thrilled to be part of their family of writers!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers, who may not know you a few tidbits about M.J. Rose?

Getting published has been an adventure. I self-published Lip Service in 1998 before it was fashionable to self publish.  Several traditional publishers had turned it down. Editors had loved it, but didn’t know how to position it or market it since it didn’t fit into any one genre.

Frustrated, but curious and because of my advertising background (I worked in Mad Men territory for most of my life) I was convinced that there was a readership for my work, I set up a web site where readers could download my book for $9.95 and began to seriously market the novel on the Internet.

After selling over 2500 copies (in both electronic and trade paper format) Lip Service became the first e-book and the first self-published novel chosen by the LiteraryGuild/Doubleday Book Club as well as being the first e-book to go on to be published by a mainstream New York publishing house.

I’ve written 11 novels since then and have been profiled in Time magazine, Forbes, The New York Times, Newsweek and New York Magazine, appeared on The Today Show, Fox News, CNN and The Jim Lehrer NewsHour.

I was left back in 7th grade and am dyslexic.  I was the Creative Director of Rosenfeld Sirowitz and Lawson and have a commercial in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

MBA&M: What inspired you to write ” The Book of Lost Fragrances”?

About three years ago I was reading a book about Cleopatra (69 BCE to 30BCE), who was the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, and found out she was fascinated with and some say obsessed by scent. Marc Anthony built her a fragrance factory where he planted now extinct flora and fauna including groves of balsam trees  (important in the creation of perfume at the time) confiscated from Herod.

In the 1980s a team of Italian and Israeli archaeologists believe they unearthed the factory at the south end of the Dead Sea, 30 km from Ein Gedi. Residues of ancient perfumes along with seats where customers received beauty treatments were found there.

Cleopatra was said to have kept a recipe book for her perfumes, entitled Cleopatra gynaeciarum libri. The book has been described in writings by historians Dioscorides, Homer and Pliny the Elder. No known copy of the book exists today.

When I read about that book, I knew I had the idea for a new novel.

MBA&M: What research and challenges where there in writing this title?

The book takes place in Paris in the present and during the French revolution. Also we travel back to Ancient Egypt during Cleopatra’s time. I love doing research and find it enormously exciting and creatively challenging to write about other those eras. I love getting out of my own head and my own time. But having to do so much research for one title was a bit daunting.

MBA&M: Which character in “The Book Of Lost Fragrances” do you  identify with most? Why?

I’m not sure there’s one I relate to the most – but there’s one I have a soft spot for – Robbie L’Etoile – the main character’s brother.

The hardest was the main character Jac L’Etoile. I usually find the main character the most difficult. They’re always the most elusive – playing hide and seek with me it seems.

MBA&M: What is something that scares the “heck” out of you and why?

Someone I love being seriously ill… and I guess for pretty obvious reasons.

MBA&M: What is the first book you remember reading and what genre do you enjoy reading?

The Secret Garden and I was enchanted. I like reading historical fiction, historical suspense and historical suspense with a paranormal element.

MBA&M: Do you get lost in a book rather

reading,or writing said book?

Both equally.

MBA&M: How did the characters present themselves to you,all at once,in increments,or as you wrote their story?

Some all at once – some in increments.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where “The Book of Lost Fragrances” is available?

You can find out everything at http://mjrose.com/fragrances/

And yes, I’d like to tell you about the fragrance created for the book.

M.J. is there anything else you would like to add today?

And yes, I’d like to tell you about the fragrance created for the book.

While writing THE BOOK OF LOST FRAGRANCES, to keep in the world of scent, I burned candles. When I was finished, I searched out the perfumer who’d created the candles that had inspired me the most, Frederick Bouchardy owner of Joya Studios, and gave him a copy of the manuscript as a thank you.

Bouchardy was instantly intrigued by the book—first, as a reader, he said he was taken with the mystery and romance of the story.  In my tale, scent plays a strong role as it pertains to memory. Bouchardy, who creates using oils and other classic ingredients, said this notion spoke to him as a designer and producer of fragrances, and thus the idea to create this beautiful fragrance was born.

When he told me he was going to create his version of that scent I started to cry. He asked me what I’d like to name it.

The ancient fictional fragrance at the heart of the novel is called Âmes Sœurs, which means “Soul Mates” in French.  That’s what I suggested and indeed what Bouchardy named his version: Âmes Sœurs, The Scent of Soul Mates.

I can’t imagine what it will be like this May when it goes on sale at Henri Bendel in NYC and at http://joyastudio.com/– amazing!

What a great pleasure to have you visit with  us and our readers today! Thank you!!

Book Description(from Amazon)

Publication Date: March 13, 2012
A sweeping and suspenseful tale of secrets, intrigue, and lovers separated by time, all connected through the mystical qualities of a perfume created in the days of Cleopatra–and lost for 2,000 years.
Jac L’Etoile has always been haunted by the past, her memories infused with the exotic scents that she grew up surrounded by as the heir to a storied French perfume company. In order to flee the pain of those remembrances–and of her mother’s suicide–she moved to America. Now, fourteen years later she and her brother have inherited the company along with it’s financial problems. But when Robbie hints at an earth-shattering discovery in the family archives and then suddenly goes missing–leaving a dead body in his wake–Jac is plunged into a world she thought she’d left behind. Back in Paris to investigate her brother’s disappearance, Jac becomes haunted by the legend the House of L’Etoile has been espousing since 1799. Is there a scent that can unlock the mystery of reincarnation – or is it just another dream infused perfume? The Book of Lost Fragrances fuses history, passion, and suspense, moving from Cleopatra’s Egypt and the terrors of revolutionary France to Tibet’s battle with China and the glamour of modern-day Paris. Jac’s quest for the ancient perfume someone is willing to kill for becomes the key to understanding her own troubled past.
