About the author:

Heather Farrell’s love for the scriptures began young, when at the age of 11 she hid a flashlight under her pillow so she could read the Old Testament late at night. Her love for the women in scriptures began when, her oldest son was born around Christmas time and she felt a kinship with Mary, the mother of Jesus. As she began to research Mary she realized that there were hundreds of women in the scriptures, but very little had been written about them. Excited by all the women she discovered, she began sharing what she learned on her popular blog, Women in the Scriptures ( Primarily self-taught in the scriptures, Heather is a testament to the truth that becoming a scholar of the gospel is not beyond anyone’s reach, it just takes a inquisitive mind and the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Heather grew up in Idaho but currently lives in Boone, Iowa with her husband, four children, two sheep, a goat and a flock of chickens.

Author Julie Nelson will host her blog tour for Parenting With Spiritual Power from March 3rd through May 6th.  “I wish children came with an instruction manual!” How many times have we heard this lament by a frustrated or overwhelmed parent? Perhaps we have said these words (or thought them) ourselves. There are “how to” manuals for practically anything: installing a new faucet, building a remote control car, baking an apple pie, refinishing an antique chair, or assembling a bicycle. Is there a formula or a perfect manual for raising children? Yes! The scriptures.

    Parenting with Spiritual Power

Here is a brief description of the book:

In Parenting with Spiritual Power, Julie Nelson encourages you to crack open the manual and examine the lives and parenting principles of scriptural mothers and fathers. Discover powerful examples from figures like Adam and Eve, Moses, and the Brother of Jared along with suggestions for personal application in this essential book.

A bit about Marlene Bateman Sullivan…

    Her background:

To give you some background on my life, I grew up in Sandy, Utah. My father raised gladiolus and mink, so I’m a bit of a country girl at heart. My mother was a florist. Since I dropped out of college to get married and have children, (eventually having seven), it had always been one of my goals to go back to school and graduate. I started at Utah State with five children, and had to quit when we moved to North Salt Lake. Many years later, when my children were older, I was able to return again—this time at the University of Utah, where I finally graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English.

    Why I Write:

I work very hard on my writing, for many reasons. First of all, it is simply what I do. I can’t imagine not writing. With my non-fiction, I want to inspire people and build their faith and testimonies. With my novels, I want people who ready my books to be entertained, because that is one of the primary jobs of an author. However, as an LDS author, I also feel a great responsible to write clean, uplifting novels that carry good, underlying messages, which will enlighten and inspire and help people cope with real-life dilemmas.

For information, please visit Marlene at her website:

What inspired you to want to write this book?
I came across a near-death experience while I was doing research for another book. The story was so comforting and inspiring that I wanted to find more and share them with everyone! It was so wonderful to read these experiences and have their confirmation that God lives, that He loves us and that life continues on in a beautiful place where we are happy, and I wanted other people to read them and feel the same warm feelings that I had.
What kind of research did you do?
I lived in libraries for a while. J  While I did some research at BYU and the University of Utah, I also went to Utah State. However, the majority of experiences came from the Church History Library and the Church Archives.  I pored through old newspapers, early church magazines, and in the archives, looked at countless collections of papers, journals, letters, and microfilms.

What will people gain from reading your book?
I hope it will build people’s testimonies.  One lady wrote me and said; “I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! I can’t even tell you how grateful I am to you for writing it. My 12 year old nephew died in May and this has been a healing balm to my soul. I can’t wait to send a copy to my brother. I have always been afraid to die, but not now. This book has power in its pages.”
I hope people will be inspired to try a little harder and do a little better.  To know that all acts of kindness mean so much, and to realize that this life is not just a testing period, but a chance for us to grow and learn. I hope people come away from this book with a firmer conviction that life continues on and that if we endure our trials patiently and learn from them, great blessings await us in the next life.

~Marlene, thank you for spending time with us and our readers today! What an interesting and uplifting post!~

    A Gaze Into Heaven

Here is a synopsis of the book:
Gaze Into Heaven is a carefully compiled collection of more than 50 near-death experiences that occurred during the early years of the Church. These documented accounts give fascinating glimpses into the Spirit World by those who have actually been there. Besides being filled with stories of insight and inspiration, Gaze Into Heaven has pertinent quotes from latter-day Prophets and other leaders, scriptures, and perceptive commentary. After reading this book, you will never think of life—or death—in the same way.

Most of us have wondered exactly what will happen when we die. What does the Spirit World look like? Will we see departed family members and friends? What do people do there? Do spirits there know what is happening on earth? What did people who had near-death experiences learn from their visit? All of these questions and many more are answered in Gaze Into Heaven. There have been many books written about modern day near-death experiences, but this book is the first to focus solely on those that took place in early church history.

Studying near-death experiences can bless us with a better understanding of this life and increase our knowledge of the life to come. By reading about those who actually entered the spirit world and saw conditions there, we can benefit from the insights they gained and use that information to reevaluate our lives and use our time on earth productively.

Excerpt #1 from “A Gaze into Heaven:

Lorenzo Dow Young spoke of his near-death experience, saying: “In a moment I was out of the body, and fully conscious that I had made the change. At once, a heavenly messenger, or guide, was by me. I thought and acted as naturally as I had done in the body, and all my sensations seemed as complete without as with it. The personage with me was dressed in the purest white. For a short time I remained in the room where my body lay. My sister Fanny (who was living with me when I had this dream) and my wife were weeping bitterly over my death. I sympathized with them deeply in their sorrow, and desired to comfort them. I realized that I was under the control of the man who was by me. I begged of him the privilege of speaking to them, but he said he could not grant it. “My guide, for so I will call him, said ‘Now let us go.’”

Excerpt #2 (For a bit more insight int0 A GAZE INTO HEAVEN)

Harriet Ovard Lee died from injuries suffered after a fall. “I will now endeavor to recount my experience during the forty eight hours that my spirit was out of my body. . . . I heard a voice calling me by name, saying, ‘Harriet,’ three times, ‘Come, I am waiting.’ . . . I saw my husband and all the people in the room, some of them crying and wringing their hands over my lifeless body.  “The voice said, ‘Come,’ and I saw a personage whom I followed . . . and we passed out at the door into what appeared to be unlimited space. Again my guide called me by name, commanding me to follow him, which I did, and we kept moving forward and I felt as light as a feather and as free as a bird on the wing, all pain and uneasiness having entirely left me. . . .”
