About the Book:

Anderson Gratney does odd jobs that usually involve a gun and covert ops for the CIA. His latest assignment? Kidnap a CIA analyst in order to keep her safe. Easy. Except there’s nothing simple about the beautiful, careful Carol Sark, who tempts him the more he learns about her.
Coming face to face with a masked man in her home is the most terrifying experience of Carol’s life—until he kidnaps her. He claims he’s there to keep her safe, but she doesn’t know who to trust. And until they can figure out who the threat is, she’s forced to take him at his word.
Time is ticking, and even though she drives him nuts, Anderson very much wants to keep her alive. Unfortunately, the assassins have other ideas…

Excerpt #2

Andy lunged into the shed and yanked the line on the detonator caps. Sparks hissed as the charges caught. He didn’t have time to ensure the countdown started. He jumped onto the snowmobile and gunned the engine, swerving the high-powered vehicle around.

They needed as many objects between them and the shooters as possible.

A figure leaned over the railing.

Andy squeezed the accelerator and they shot forward. He swerved. Shots rang out, hitting the snow, sending up plumes of flurries.

Five…

He cut behind the house.

Glass shattered and a shot hit the plastic casing on the front of the snowmobile.

Four…

Carol screamed.

Andy banked, turning so fast he felt Carol nearly whip off the side.

Three…

A blast so loud the snow seemed to ripple from the concussion wave rang out. Andy lurched forward and Carol’s yell was lost amid the sound of the explosion.

They tumbled sideways off the snowmobile.

The timing was off.

Debris hit the snow, raining down.

Andy rolled, pinning Carol under him, protecting her with his body. She sobbed into the material of his jacket.

“Carol.” He barked her name, killing all kindness inside of him. It was natural to panic. Any normal person would, but they didn’t have that luxury. “Pull it together. We have to go.”

He pushed up, grabbing hold of her arm and hauling her up with him. He couldn’t coddle her, couldn’t spend precious moments assuring her it would be okay. They needed to get clear, in case there were satellites aimed at them or if the two shooters weren’t dead. Chances were, if these people were good enough to find them, they were good enough to survive the traps.

Andy glanced back. The front right side of the house was blown out and flames licked the sky. With any luck, everything they’d brought with them would burn with the follow-up charges.

“Come on. Now.” He didn’t see movement from the two shooters, but he also didn’t see any bodies.

Unless he saw them dead, he’d assume they were alive.

He wanted to go back, finish the job, but that would mean leaving Carol vulnerable. He couldn’t do that.

Andy picked her up and carried her to the snowmobile. He righted it, put her on the back, and climbed on. He’d hoped they would have more time here, but they didn’t.

He gunned the engine and they shot forward, sailing through the trees.

Andy headed south until he spied a landmark, an almost perfectly smooth, sphere-shaped boulder. He pulled the snowmobile into the shelter created by the huge rock resting against the side of the mountain, and killed the engine.

“W-why are we stopping?” Carol’s voice trembled.

“I need you to go through your pockets. Take everything out, understand?”

“Why?”

“Carol—”

“Fine,” she snapped.

Andy edged out, almost into the open, closed his eyes and listened.

Carol sniffled and wrestled with her coat, all the layers of fluffy down.

“Shh,” he said quietly.

Was anyone following them?

My Thoughts

Assassin Games by Sidney Bristol is an exciting Crime Thriller. #2 in “Tarnished Heroes”, see “Spy Game”, but can be read as a stand alone.

This is the story of Anderson Gratney and Carol Sark both work with the CIA in different roles. There is a mole, a traitor, a murderer,  danger, an assassin with plenty of twists and turns and edge of your seat action. Action paced, fast paced with engaging and realistic characters and an intriguing and captivating storyline.  The storyline flows seamlessly and effortlessly.  It is also unpredictable and compelling. A fantastic Crime Thriller with a few surprises.  A must read. While, this is my first time reading Sidney Brisyol I intend to pick up “Spy Game” and continue to follow her stories. “I voluntarily received a complimentary copy, however,  these are my honest opinions. I was in no way required nor compensated to write a review.”

SPOTLIGHT with #Review~~REMNANTS~~CAROLYN ARNOLD

REMNANTS

{Brandon Fisher FBI Series, Book 6}

CAROLYN ARNOLD

Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI Series Book 6) by [Arnold, Carolyn]

“Arnold has created a gritty nightmare of a tale that will churn the stomachs of even the most hard-boiled of FBI agents… Full of grit, gore and enough twists to make even the most diligent of readers hard-pressed to discover the villain, even the ending will keep you on pins and needles.”
–Tome Tender Book Blog

All that remains are whispers of the past…

When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.

With no quick means of identifying the deceased, building a profile of this serial killer is more challenging than usual. How are these targets being selected? Why are their limbs being severed and their bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this person to murder?

The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: The killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…

My Thoughts:

Remnants by Carolyn Arnold is an heart-pumping Suspense/Thriller/Mystery set in Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia. #6 in “Brandon Fisher FBI series”. While, can be read as a stand alone, readers will find re-appearing characters from the previous books. This was my first time reading Ms. Arnold’s intense FBI series but I was not lost. I found it to be exciting, heart-pumping, intensive, and frightening at times. What a wild ride of police procedurals, FBI tactics, and so much more.

Gritty, with gore, a serial killer, twists and turns, and non-stop action, that will keep the reader turning pages.  The details and police procedures were well-researched and explained so the reader understood. It was as if Ms. Arnold was speaking to the reader directly and in person. The characters were well-developed and engaging. The plot, WOW, was unique, but original, who the serial killer was, was  hard to figure out, as all is revealed, you wonder, how did I not figure this out sooner.  A nail biting Psychological Thriller, to be sure. Don’t read late at night, you might hear monsters (or a serial killer) go bump in the night.

If you enjoy CSI or Criminal Minds T.V. series, you will definitely enjoy “Remnants”. Readers will be engrossed from the beginning to the end. I found this story to be an overwhelmingly gritty story, but what a joy to read.  I look forward to reading more from Carolyn Arnold. Highly recommended for fans of Mystery, Suspense, Psychological Thrillers, and hard-core FBI series.

MY THOUGHTS:

Beloved Beast by Karyn Gerard is a fantastic read with a twist. Book 2 in her exciting “The Ravenswood Chronicle”, it can be read as a read alone. See, ” Beloved Monster”, while not necessary to enjoy book 2, book 1 gives the details of the hero’s past. This is set forty-eight years after book 1.

This is a unique twist on Historical romance, with paranormal romance elements. In “Beloved Beast”, the debauched Viscount Ravenswood has a new name, Luke Newman. He works with MI6, and his nephew, Fred Parker, is a SIS officer. Luke is now a widower, and lonely, so working with his nephew helps abate his loneliness. He helps to relocate compromised or returning spies from war torn Europe. Luke is scarred from his 1885 carriage accident, which also gave him heightened senses, made him cool to the touch, he has a grayish coloring, disfigured, increased strength, heightened libido and maybe immortality. Picture a Mary Shelley experiment type thing, without the monster.

Gilliam Browning, seduced a German business man for information on the “Enigma” machine, then she returns to England and is suddenly in grave danger from a German spy. Enter…Luke to keep her safe. Now both are in grave danger.

“Beloved Beast” is a mixture of Gothic horror, World War II romantic suspense, mystery and an outstanding spy novel. Whew, what an exciting tale of second chances, romance and an unabiding love! Ms. Gerard pulled this incredible, dramatic story off with style, brilliant writing and an uncanny style that grips and captures the reader’s heart. I was held spellbound! “Beloved Beast”, is one such story, that I found I could not stop reading until the last page. This story lingers long after the last page. Highly recommended for fans of historical romance with paranormal twists, powerful plot plots, vivid details, and WWII fans. *There is explicit sensual scenes, however, they are done with taste and not offensive, to this reader, however, this is NOT an erotic story.*
A very enjoyable and satisfying read with twists, romance, the feel of historical suspense and the hope of finding happiness, love and a HEA. Awesome read! Karyn Gerard has written a story with her usual aplomb, her eye for detail and her desire to give readers a fulfilling story that will keep them turning pages in this thrilling story of spies, romance, danger and love. Magnificent!! A must read!

MY THOUGHTS

Highland Spy: Mercenary Maidens Series, Book 1 by Madeline Martin definitely shows craftsmanship in writing a mesmerizing Medieval Scottish Romance. Book 1 promises readers an exciting thrill ride into the “Mescenary Maidens” series. WOW! Set in a delapicated castle in Scotland and at the English court.

Ariana Fitzroy, after losing her family and her fortune, resorts to card games at court to survive, which she thinks she has the capability of winning. Connor Grant, is a trainer of fallen women from the English court and a broken personal assassin to the king. Which is where he encounters Ariana, cheating at cards, he gives her the option of going to prison or going with him in training. Of course, she accepts his offer. This is how she becomes his newest trainee.

“Highland Spy” is emotionally charged, intriguing, mesmerizing and utterly captivating! It has second chances, betrayal, challenges, female spies, claiming an inheritance once stolen, retribution, facing the consequences life has dealt head on, overcoming hopelessness to become confident, strong, and of course, romance and finding love. But will Ariana and Connor find their HEA or lose all to lies and deception?
The secondary characters are as enticing as the hero/heroine. They are very intriguing and makes the reader wish to learn more of their circumstances and how they became spies. This story has twists and turns, and surprises I didn’t see coming, betrayals I never preserved until the evil was encountered. I was captivated from the first few pages to the last page and beyond. I can not wait to read more of this exciting and thrilling series. Another must read Medieval Scottish Romance by Madeline Martin, who has become another favorite author of mine. She holds her readers in awe, and totally entranced in her stories. Definitely a WOW moment! Highly recommended! Fans of Medevial romance, Scottish romance, second chances, fast paced stories and well written romance are sure to enjoy “Highland Spy” by MadelineMartin. I definitely enjoyed this tale of live, love and finding a HEA! Another hit for Madeline Martin!

Two of Scottish romance’s most loved authors have joined pens to write a thrilling new time travel series filled with passion, danger, and intrigue. These never-before-published novels will sweep you to Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic is real, time is relevant, and there is no escape from desire…

Men are disappearing in the Highland crofting village of Heatheredge. The authorities suspect foul play, but without signs of violence—or bodies—they can’t prove a thing.

World champion swordsman Cailean Ross is living the fantasy of a lifetime as the victor of Heatheredge’s medieval reenactment Gathering. But when the fantasy turns into reality, swordplay becomes a fight to the death and he finds himself among the ‘missing’ statistics.

Julianna Mackay flees a man she fears is an evil wizard and literally runs into handsome Cailean Ross. Cailean defends Lady Julianna from her attackers. Together, they set out in search of the key to a six-hundred-year-old curse that can only be broken in medieval Scotland.

Men are disappearing from a small village, with no bodies, or signs of violence, how can foul play be involved?

This is Cailean Ross, a world champion swordsman and Julianna Mackay, who flees a man she fears is an evil wizard’s tale.

THE PRISONER OF SILVERWOOD CASTLE (DARKE OF NIGHT, BOOK 2) BY MARIE TREANOR with #Review

The Prisoner of Silverwood Castle (Darke of Night Book 2) by Marie Treanor

Date of Publication: August 16, 2016

Blurb

Dead men don’t tell tales. They wail them from the top of the tallest tower.

Darke of Night, Book 2

Lady Guinevere (Guin) Harvey would much rather be writing gothic tales of intrigue and adventure than dancing attendance on her sister, the newly married Duchess of Silberwald. Until they arrive at Silberwald Castle, a place of enchanting perfection—and gothic shadows.

Ghostly groans and clanking chains lead Guin through ancient, misshapen passages to one of the castle’s many mysteries: a cell where the odd but charming Kasimir is kept chained like an animal. He could be a figment of her vivid dreams, the ghost of a dead, mad prince, or just a political prisoner no one wants to talk about.

Desperate to discover what beast is howling such soul-chilling cries, Guin summons the medium Barbara Darke. But by the time Barbara arrives, Guin can no longer distinguish dream from reality, friend from enemy. Even with all Barbara’s unique talents, they have to face new dangers before they finally discover the terrifying truth of Silberwald Castle.

Warning: Gives new meaning to falling madly in love…

BLOG TOUR~~ THE DEAD OF HAGGARD HALL~~MARIE TREANOR

The Dead of Haggard Hall (Darke of Night Book 1) by Marie Treanor

Date of Publication: July 26, 2016

Blurb

Spirit possession is easy to remedy. Possession of the heart is another matter.

Darke of Night, Book 1

After vicar’s widow and natural medium Barbara Darke loses her respectable teaching position, she reluctantly agrees to become companion to her former pupil Emily, now the bride of young Sir Arthur Haggard.

Once settled at Haggard Hall, Barbara finds her friend is beset by ghostly voices and unexplained deaths. In a maelstrom of dark spirits and wicked emotions, Barbara battles to lay Emily’s ghosts to rest-both hampered and helped by Arthur’s skeptical cousin Patrick, who provokes and attracts her in equal measure.

It would be a mistake to trust a secretive, guilt-ridden man suspected of driving his wife to suicide, if not outright murdering her. And it could well be lethal to give in to her own desires, confused as they often are with the lusts of the dead.

But Arthur and Emily are in genuine physical danger, and suspicion is falling closer and closer to Patrick-the man who haunts Barbara’s sensual dreams. The man who stands to inherit Haggard Hall.

Warning: Contains a medium whose body is open season for spirit possession, and a scandal-ridden journalist who only believes what he can see-and touch.

BLOG TOUR and GUEST BLOGGER~THE VIRGIN AND THE VISCOUNT~ CHARIS MICHAELS with #Giveaway

THE VIRGIN AND THE VISCOUNT tour bannerWELCOME! CHARIS MICHAELS….

What Is It About a Virgin?

When I revealed the title of my second book to one of my writing buddies, she wrote back:  “Nice.  Are virgins like the new dukes?”  Apparently I’m not the only one name-checking virgins these days.  She’d seen it on several other books, not unlike the proliferation of “dukes” of the last couple of years.

So, what gives?  What is it about a virgin?

Before I go any further, let me acknowledge that not everyone loves a virginal heroine.  In fact, some readers can’t abide them.  Certainly, virgins-as-heroines are not as thick on the ground as they were back in the day, when I read my first romance in the late 1980s.  In today’s contemporary romance, I’d venture to say that virgins are virtually nonexistent.

VirginandtheViscountCOVERBut my editor loved the title, The Virgin and the Viscount as soon as I suggested it, and as my friend said, I’m not the only author brandishing the big “V.”  So perhaps this means that there are still a few of us virgin enthusiasts out there.  Hey, I’ll admit, straight up, that one of my favorite romance tropes is a hero who believes a heroine is not a virgin, only to discover, after he deflowers her, that she is (or was).  It’s out-dated and mysoginistic, and even I had to tone down some version of this trope (spoiler alert #1) to make my 1811-set Historical match modern sensibilities (although the resulting scene is still pretty devastating, if I do say so myself).

Regardless of who knows who’s a virgin, I still consider an innocent heroine—so long as she’s full of spunk and enthusiasm and healthy curiosity—to be playful and fun and totally sexy.  She certainly offers a lot more interesting fodder for a love scene.  Every romance author approaches these scenes a little differently, but for me, they must advance the story and up the stakes for the hero and heroine.  In other words, they must be remarkable, worth spelling out in graphic detail.  And nothing makes an interlude more worthy of remark or lengthy detail than the first time, especially for my over-the-top characters.

Also, virgins are historically accurate.

Also, we were all (or still may be) virgins, so we can relate.

Also, few sexual experiences are more wildly discussed, lamented, celebrated or VirginandtheViscountCOVER(circling back) discussed than anyone’s first time.  For better or for worse, we relish dishing about this topic. I defy you to think of your best friend and claim you have not heard the story of her first time.

Also—well, maybe this is more like a “primarily”—if you know me in real life, you know that I’m an old-fashioned kind of gal, and I simply prefer the virgins  There, I said it.  Or, at least, I prefer my eager, exploratory, and totally in-love virginal heroines.  But hey—even if your not usually a fan of the virginal heroine, consider this:  the leading lady in The Virgin and the Viscount (spoiler alert #2) does not know whether she is a virgin or not.  Either way, I hope you’ll give Lady Elisabeth a try.  And just like your best friend, let’s dish.  Let me know what you think!

WOW! Ms. Michaels, for stopping by MBA&M today! Congratulations on your new release!

About THE VIRGIN AND THE VISCOUNT

VirginandtheViscountCOVER

In the next sparkling romance in debut author Charis Michael’s Bachelor Lords of London series, a proper viscount meets his match in a beguiling virgin who can’t help but break all the rules.

The Virgin
Lady Elisabeth Hamilton-Baythes has a painful secret. At the innocent age of fifteen, she was abducted by highwaymen and sold to a brothel. After two days, a young lord discovers her and enacts a brave rescue to get her out. Now she’s a grown woman, working to save other girls from the horror she saw that night and never forgetting the young man who rescued her.

The Viscount
Bryson Courtland, Viscount Rainsleigh has overcome an abusive boyhood, neglectful parents, and a bankrupt title to be one of the wealthiest noblemen in Britain. He works tirelessly to be upright and forthright and proper to a fault. Now he requires only one thing: A proper, forthright, proper wife.

The Unraveling
When a charity event puts Lord Bryson and Lady Elisabeth face-to-face, Bryson has no memory of the wounded girl of long ago. All he can see is a perfect candidate to be his future wife. Elisabeth has never forgotten him, but she worries that the brave boy who saved her so long ago has become a rich man with an unfulfilled life.

As a whirlwind courtship reveals the truth, Bryson must accept that Elisabeth is actually a shadow from his dark past, while Elisabeth must show that love is the noblest virtue of all.

Prologue

VirginandtheViscountCOVEROn April 12, 1809, Franklin “Frankie” Courtland, 6th Viscount Rainsleigh, tripped on a root in the bottom of a riverbed and drowned.  He was drunk at the time, picnicking with friends on the banks of the River Wylye.  According an account later given to the magistrate, his lordship simply fell over, bumped into a fallen log, and sank.

It was there he remained—“enjoying the cool,” or so his friends believed—until he became too heavy, too slippery, and, alas, too dead to revive.  But they did dislodge him; and after that, they claimed he floated to the surface, bobbed several times, and then gently glided downstream.  He was later found just before sunset, face down and bloated (in life, as also in death), beached on a pebble shoal near Codford.

At the time the elder Courtland was sinking to the bottom of the river, his son and heir, Bryson was hunched over a desk in the offices of his fledgling shipping company, waiting for the very moment his father would die.  It had been an exceedingly long, progressively humiliating wait.  Years long—nay, decades.

Luckily for Bryson, for his ships and his future, he was capable of doing more things at once than wait, and while his father drank and debauched his way through all respectability and life, Bryson worked.

It was an unthinkable thing for a young heir and nobleman—to “work”—but Bryson was given little choice, considering the impoverished state of the Rainsleigh crest.  He was scarcely eleven years of age when he made first foray into labor, and not so many years after, into private enterprise.  His life in work had not ceased since.  On the rare occasion that he didn’t work, he studied.

With his meager earnings (he began by punting boats on the very river in which his father later drowned), he made meager investments.  These investments reaped small gains—first in shares in the punting station; later in property along the water; later still, in other industry up and down the river.

Bryon lived modestly, worked ceaselessly, and spared only enough to pay his way through Cambridge, bring up his brother, and see him educated him, as well.   Every guinea earned was reinvested.  He repeated the process again and again, a little less meagerly each time ‘round.

By the time the elder viscount’s self-destructive lifestyle wrought his river- and drink-soaked end, Bryson had managed to accrue a small fortune, launch a company that built and sailed ships, and construct an elaborate plan for what he would do when his father finally cocked up his toes and died.

When at last that day came, Bryson had but one complaint: it took fifty-two hours for the constable to find him.  He was a viscount for two days before anyone, including himself, even knew it.

But two days was a trifle compared to a lifetime of waiting.  And on the day he learned of his inheritance—nay, the very hour—he launched his long awaited plan.

By three o’clock on the fourth day, he’d razed the rotting, reeking east wing of the family estate in Wiltshire to the ground.

Within the week, he’d extracted his mother from the west wing and shipped her and a contingent of discreet caregivers to a villa in Spain.

VirginandtheViscountCOVERWithin the month, he’d sold every stick of furniture, every remaining fork and dish, every sweat-soaked toga and opium-tinged gown.  He burned the drapes, burned the rugs, burned the tapestries.  He delivered the half-starved horses and the fighting dogs to an agricultural college and pensioned off the remaining staff.

By the six-week mark, he’d unloaded the London townhome—sold at auction to the highest bidder—and with it, the broken-down carriage, his father’s dusty arsenal, what was left of the wine stores, and all the lurid art.

It was a whirlwind evacuation, a gutting, really, and no one among polite society had ever witnessed a son or heir take such absolute control and haul away so much family or property quite so fast.

But no one among polite society was acquainted with Bryson Anders Courtland, the new Viscount Rainsleigh.

And no one understood that it was not so much an ending as it was an entirely fresh start.  Once the tearing down ceased, the rebuilding could begin. New viscountsy, new money, new respect, new life.

It was an enterprise into which Bryson threw himself like no other. Unlike all others, however, he could only do so much, one man, alone. For this, he would require another.  A partner.   Someone with whom he could work together towards a common goal.  A collaborator who emulated his precise, immaculate manner. A matriarch, discreet and pure. A paragon of propriety.  A viscountess.  A proper, perfect wife.

MY THOUGHTS:

PROFILE OF FEAR by Alexa Grace is #4 in the amazing “Profile” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, “Profile of Evil”, “Profile of Terror”, and “Profile of Retribution”.  What an awesome Romantic Suspense/Thriller/Mystery from the talented Alexa Grace.

This is investigators Cameron Chase and Robynn Burton’s story of  the unspeakable world of human trafficking.

Lots of tension, drama, mystery, suspense and sensual tension makes for an intriguing and fast paced romance. Human trafficking is so deplorable, but Ms. Grace handles it with grace, expertise, and brilliance. Thrown into the world of human trafficking, a kidnapping, and danger, when Cameron learns is foster daughter is targeted for abduction.

A thrill ride of suspense and danger, with Ms. Grace’s usual aplomb of romance and sensual tension. A heart-pounding, seat of the edge of your seat action, emotional and compelling. A powerful Romantic Suspense. I would highly recommend “Profile of Fear” to any fans of Romantic Suspense, Thriller, Suspense with some Mystery and the power of love. What a ride! WOW! I have enjoyed each and everyone of the “Profile” series, but I think this one is my absolute favorite. A must read! Pick up your copy of “Profile of Fear”, you will not be disappointed. Masterful, powerful, compelling and emotional. Brilliant!
