A MAN TRYING TO ESCAPE FROM THE PAST…
When Silas Anson inherits the earldom of Lichfield from a father he never knew, he has one goal: protect his siblings. To do so, he’ll need to do two things: replenish the estate’s depleted coffers, and gain the support of his powerful family—even though they betrayed his mother years ago. An arranged marriage with the daughter of the Marquess of Blandford will accomplish both of these objectives, while giving him a chance at a normal, happy life.

NEEDS A WOMAN WHO CAN SEE THE FUTURE.
Except Lady Mallory Hughes isn’t the normal debutante he expects. Along with a large dowry, she’s inherited her family’s gift for predicting the future. For years, her family has kept her hidden away from society, for fear she will bring the family shame. If she is ever to have a chance at an independent existence—and love—she must get through this week without alerting Silas about her visions. But when Mallory touches Silas, she sees his death.
With Silas’s life on the line, how can Mallory save him without revealing her gift, and risking their chance at a future together?

Excerpt from Bound by the Christmastide Moon:

“Are you certain you do not wish to freshen up before meeting with Lord Lichfield?” Hettie did her utmost to keep up with Mallory as she departed the dining hall. “Mayhap change your gown or have Miss Felicity’s maid re-pin your hair?”
Mallory paused, her aunt colliding with her shoulder at the sudden stop.
She’d dressed that day as she did each morn. The gown she wore had been specifically packed because it highlighted her ample curves and hid her not-so-narrow waist. The ribbon woven through her long, brown curls was of a deep plum that complemented her grey gown. Her shoes were half-boots, sturdy enough for a walk about Tetbery Estate. Except for the ink marring her hand, Mallory appeared as she always did.
Poised. Modest. Genteel.
Everything the daughter of a marquess was raised to be.
That she was anything but poised on the inside was of no consequence, so long as she did her utmost to keep those around her blissfully unaware.
Her talent as an oracle—or a clairvoyant—did not define Mallory. In fact, she was determined to prove her family wrong and live a normal life. That she’d need refrain from touching others—and most objects—did not deter her from believing a normal life could be hers.
“I need not freshen anything. If my simple frock and daily coiffure is not to Lord Lichfield’s liking, then imagine if he learned of my talents.”
“You are not to speak of it,” Hettie hissed. “Your father would—“
“My father would die of apoplexy if I embarrassed him in any way,” Mallory finished. “Think you I am opposed to this match? I assure you, I do.”
Mallory squared her shoulders and marched into the foyer, pausing only to allow the butler to open the parlor door and announce their arrival.
“Lady Henrietta Hughes and Lady Mallory Hughes,” Tolsworth proclaimed, giving Mallory a reassuring nod as she swept past him and into the room.
She was vaguely aware of her aunt entering the parlor behind her and the butler pulling the door closed after stating tea would arrive with all due haste; however, Mallory stood rooted to the spot.
She hadn’t thought about what Lord Lichfield would look like, nor considered his age when she’d been told of the potential match. He could have been plagued with a hunched back or vertically challenged, but she hadn’t questioned that.
The man who stood to greet them was not what she’d envisioned in an arranged marriage.
He was not stout or rounded. He was in possession of all his extremities. And he certainly was not of an age past his prime.
Lord Lichfield did, however, tower over both Mallory and Hettie.
The earl’s shoulders were broad enough to pull a cart or roll a boulder up a hill.
And he was handsome. Not in the tradition English sense with a sharp nose, angular jaw, and rigid stance. No, it was far more—yet far less—what her brethren in muslin considered a dashing man.
He had a sophisticated air about him. As if he had seen things, experienced things, Mallory could only guess at.
His clenched jaw, and his clear blue eyes cascading over her, made Mallory wish she’d donned a gown that didn’t constrict her breathing in such a manner, as she found it exceedingly difficult to gain a proper breath.
Her stomach fluttered—actually fluttered as he gazed upon her.
A single black curl fell over one eye, and he pushed it back before turning his attention to Aunt Hettie.
“Heaven’s above,” Hettie hissed in her ear.

My thoughts
Bound by the Christmastide Room by Christina McKnight is a quick read, a Novella.   Originally published in Kissed at Christmas (Castle Keyvnor Collection)
I love Christmas stories, and this author brought the spirit and magic of Christmas together with this brilliantly written tale of two strangers, their secrets and an arranged marriage. The cast of characters are charming,  engaging and believable.  The plot was fantastic,  a lady who can predict the the future and a gentleman who needs her dowry.  Lady Mallory Hughes, has a large dowry, and she’s inherited her family’s gift, of sight.  Silas Anson, inherits the earldom of Lichfield from his  father whom he never knew, he has one goal in mind to protect his siblings, to do this he must marry.
Sparks fly when Mallory and Silas meet, and as they say…. the rest is history.  Readers will find some surprises,  twists and turns, secrets and a Christmas HEA.  A great afternoon read to help get you in the Christmas spirit.  An absolute delight to read!

LAIRD OF TWILGHT~~ELIZA KNIGHT~ON TOUR

A future foretold… Only one man can fulfill her destiny…

Lady Lilias Cameron has spent the last thirteen years skeptical of a prophecy regarding her future—until the very man described by the seer is introduced as her escort to a doomed marriage. Brooding and handsome, she cannot help the sparks of awareness he triggers. Nor can she ignore the deep desire to be true to herself.

Dirk MacDougall, Lord of the Isles, is to deliver a worthy bride to his Norse enemy, in an alliance that will hopefully bring peace to his country. The only problem is, he finds himself quite enamored by the spirited and charming lady. When one kiss leads to another, desire to claim her as his own takes hold.

If the alliance is broken, a mighty battle will be waged across Scotland begging the question: is forbidden love worth the price of war?

Spring, 1282
Highlands, Scotland
THEY galloped through the eerie moonlit night. Warriors cloaked by darkness. Blending in with the forest, only the occasional glint of the moon off their weapons made their presence seem out of place.
’Twas chilly for spring, and yet, they rode hard enough the horses were lathered with sweat and foaming at the mouth. But the Montgomery clan wasn’t going to be pushed out of yet another meeting of the clans, not when their future depended on it. This meeting would put their clan on the map, make them an asset to their king and country. As it was, years before King Alexander III had lost one son and his wife. He’d not remarried and the fate of the country now relied on one son who didn’t feel the need to marry. The prince toyed with his life as though he had a death wish, fighting, drinking, and carrying on without a care in the world. The king’s only other chance at a succession was his daughter who’d married but had not yet shown any signs of a bairn filling her womb. If something were to happen to the king, the country would erupt into chaos. Every precaution needed to be taken.
Young Jamie sat tall and proud upon his horse. Even prouder was he, that his da, the fearsome Montgomery laird, had allowed him to accompany the group of a half dozen seasoned warriors—the men who sat on his own clan council—to the meeting. The fact that his father had involved him in matters of state truly made his chest puff five times its size.
After being fostered out the last seven years, Jamie had just returned to his father’s home. At age fourteen, he was ready to take on the duties of eldest son, for one day he would be laird. This was the perfect opportunity to show his da all he’d learned. To prove he was worthy.
Laird Montgomery held up his hand and all the riders stopped short. Puffs of steam blew out in miniature clouds from the horses’ noses. Jamie’s heart slammed against his chest and he looked from side to side to make sure no one could hear it. He was a man after all, and men shouldn’t be scared of the dark. No matter how frightening the sounds were.
Carried on the wind were the deep tones of men shouting and the shrill of a woman’s screams. Prickles rose on Jamie’s arms and legs. They must have happened upon a robbery or an ambush. When he’d set out to attend his father, he’d not counted on a fight. Nay, Jamie merely thought to stand beside his father and demand a place within the Bruce’s High Council.
Swallowing hard, he glanced at his father, trying to assess his thoughts, but as usual, the man sat stoic, not a hint of emotion on his face.
The laird glanced at his second in command and jutted his chin in silent communication. The second returned the nod. Jamie’s father made a circling motion with his fingers, and several of the men fanned out.
Jamie observed the exchange, his throat near to bursting with questions. What was happening?
Finally, his father motioned Jamie forward. Keeping his emotions at bay, Jamie urged his mount closer. His father bent toward him, indicating for Jamie to do the same, then spoke in a hushed tone.
“We’re nearly to Sutherland lands. Just on the outskirts, son. ’Tis an attack, I’m certain. We mean to help.”
Jamie swallowed past the lump in his throat and nodded. The meeting was to take place at Dunrobin Castle. Why that particular castle was chosen, Jamie had not been privy to. Though he speculated ’twas because of how far north it was. Well away from Stirling where the king resided.
“Are ye up to it?” his father asked.
Tightening his grip on the reins, Jamie nodded. Fear cascaded along his spine, but he’d never show any weakness in front of his father, especially now that he’d been invited on this very important journey.
“Good. ’Twill give ye a chance to show me what ye’ve learned.”
Again, Jamie nodded, though he disagreed. Saving people wasn’t a chance to show off what he’d learned. He could never look at protecting another as an opportunity to prove his skill, only as a chance to make a difference. But he kept that to himself. His da would never understand. If making a difference proved something to his father, then so be it.
An owl screeched from somewhere in the distance as it caught onto its prey, almost in unison with the blood curdling scream of a woman.
His father made a few more hand motions and the rest of their party followed him as they crept forward at a quickened pace on their mounts, avoiding making any noise.
The road ended on a clearing, and some thirty horse-lengths away a band of outlaws circled a trio—a lady, one warrior, and a lad close to his own age.
The outlaws caught sight of their approach, shouting and pointing. His father’s men couldn’t seem to move quickly enough and Jamie watched in horror as the man, woman and child were hacked down. All three of them on the ground, the outlaws turned on the Montgomery warriors and rushed forward as though they’d not a care in the world.
Jamie shook. He’d never been so scared in his life. His throat had long since closed up and yet his stomach was threatening to purge everything he’d consumed that day. Even though he felt like vomiting, a sense of urgency, and power flooded his veins. Battle-rush, he’d heard it called by the seasoned warriors. And it was surging through his body, making him tingle all over.
The laird and his men raised their swords in the air, roaring out their battle cries. Jamie raised his sword to do the same, but a flash of gold behind a large lichen-covered boulder caught his attention. He eased his knees on his mount’s middle.
What was that?
Another flash of gold — was that blonde hair? He’d never seen hair like that before.
Jamie turned to his father, intent to point it out, but his sire was several horse-lengths ahead and ready to engage the outlaws, leaving it up to Jamie to investigate.
After all, if there was another threat lying in wait, was it not up to someone in the group to seek them out? The rest of the warriors were intent on the outlaws which left Jamie to discover the identity of the thief.
He veered his horse to the right, galloping toward the boulder. A wee lass darted out, lifting her skirts and running full force in the opposite direction. Jamie loosened his knees on his horse and slowed. That was not what he’d expected. At all. Jamie anticipated a warrior, not a tiny little girl whose legs were no match for his mount. As he neared, despite his slowed pace, he feared he’d trample the little imp.
He leapt from his horse and chased after her on foot. The lass kept turning around, seeing him chasing her. The look of horror on her face nearly broke his heart. Och, he was no one to fear. But how would she know that? She probably thought he was after her like the outlaws had been after the man, woman and lad.
“’Tis all right!” he called. “I will nay harm ye!”
But she kept on running, and then was suddenly flying through the air, landing flat on her face.
Jamie ran toward her, dropping to his knees as he reached her side and she pushed herself up.
Her back shook with cries he was sure she tried hard to keep silent. He gathered her up onto his knees and she pressed her face to his leine shirt, wiping away tears, dirt and snot as she sobbed.
“Momma,” she said. “Da!”
“Hush, now,” Jamie crooned, unsure of what else he could say. She must have just watched her parents and brother get cut to the ground. Och, what an awful sight for any child to witness. Jamie shivered, at a loss for words.
“Blaney!” she wailed, gripping onto his shirt and yanking. “They hurt!”
Jamie dried her tears with the cuff of his sleeve. “Your family?” he asked.
She nodded, her lower lip trembling, green-blue eyes wide with fear and glistening with tears. His chest swelled with emotion for the little imp and he gripped her tighter.
“Do ye know who the men were?”

“Bad people,” she mumbled.

My thoughts:

The Highlander’s Temptation by Eliza Knight is another great Medieval Romance. A prequel to  the “Stolen Bride” series, but can be read as a stand alone.

An absolute delight to read. Loved everything about this story, the characters and the storyline. You can’t go wrong with an Eliza Knight story. Magnificently written with passionate, and powerful characters. A must for fans of Highlanders and the lasses who win their hearts.

an improper governess about the book

an improper governess cover

Lusting after one’s employer is certainly not the done thing when you are a governess. But Miss Abigail Adams cannot seem to help herself…

Abigail Adams, the resident governess of Hartfield Hall, might appear to be a very proper young woman, yet she secretly yearns for excitement to brighten her mundane life. And what she does want, she really shouldn’t long for—Sir Nicholas Barsby, the indecently handsome, charismatic master of Hartfield.

Sir Nicholas Barsby returns home from a tour of the Continent to discover his widowed sister-in-law has employed a decidedly delectable governess for his nieces. When it becomes blatantly apparent that the attraction is mutual, Nicholas ruthlessly decides to present Miss Adams with a thoroughly wicked proposal.

Abigail is initially shocked by Sir Nicholas’s outrageous and highly improper offer to become his mistress. Having wanton thoughts about a man is undoubtedly sinful but leading the life of a fallen woman is something else entirely. Nevertheless, falling into Sir Nicholas’s arms might just prove to be an invitation too tempting for Abigail to ignore. One thing is clear, whether she’s a governess or mistress, she must not lose her heart…

an improper governess book informationRelease Date: July 15, 2016

Length: Long novella (45000 words)

Additional information: This novella can be read as a stand-alone but is part of a loosely linked series.

an improper governess excerpt

By the time she reached the stile, Abigail was gasping like a landed carp. As she gathered her skirts preparing to climb over, thunder clapped so close, she shrieked. A bright bolt of lightning lit the air around her and she swore she could feel her hair stand on end. Ignoring all dictates of decorum, she hoisted her skirts even higher and clambered up and over the rough wooden steps. However, as she jumped down, the muslin snagged on something and she found she was tethered like a nanny goat, her skirts caught up about her waist.

“Damn!” Without thought, the coarse expletive escaped her. Not only was she about to get caught in a storm she’d probably ruined her best day gown. Could this day get any worse?

“Damn indeed.”

It seemed it could.

Abigail whipped her head around and found herself staring up into the face of the most handsome man she had ever seen. Raven-haired with slashing brows and chiseled features, he sat astride a glossy black gelding with the confidence of a knight-errant, but alas, not the gallantry. As his deep blue eyes raked over her naked thighs and lower to her stockings, his expression was a mixture of sardonic amusement and a darker, heavier emotion she had no trouble recognizing at all—male lust.

“May I be of assistance, dear lady?” he asked, his voice a rich rumbling purr.

Abigail’s face burned as she attempted to wrench her dress and fine cambric petticoats down all by herself. The distinct rip of fabric tearing made her wince. “You might avert your gaze, sir,” she snapped as hot outrage and mortification made her sound more like a harpy than a damsel in distress.

“Yes, I might. But then, that would not be of much help to you now, would it?” Before Abigail could even think to protest further, the ill-mannered stranger slid from his mount and within moments, had released the stubborn snag.

“There,” he said with a wide smile that was probably supposed to be rakishly appealing. “The fair maiden is free.”

“I could have managed on my own,” she retorted. She wasn’t going to thank the man, not when he’d been eyeing her lower body like a hungry beast of prey sizing up its next meal. Dear God, I hope he did not see my bottom, or worse, my—

Another crack of thunder made her start and the man glanced at the menacing sky. Lightning streaked above the dense copse of trees hiding Hartfield Hall from view. As he mounted his restive horse, a sharp gust caught his black traveling cloak and it flapped about him like the dark wings of a fallen angel.

Perhaps even Lucifer himself. “Where are you going, Miss…?” he asked, his compelling blue gaze locking with hers again. “I really don’t think you should be wandering about the countryside in this tempest. In fact, it would be quite foolish if not altogether mad. I must insist you come with me.” He held out his gloved hand.

amy rose bennett

Amy Rose Bennett has always wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. An avid reader with a particular love for historical romance, it seemed only natural to write stories in her favorite genre. She has a passion for creating emotion-packed—and sometimes a little racy—stories set in the Georgian and Regency periods. Of course, her strong-willed heroines and rakish heroes always find their happily ever after.

Amy is happily married to her own Alpha male hero, has two beautiful daughters, and a rather loopy Rhodesian Ridgeback. She has been a speech pathologist for many years but is currently devoting her time to her one other true calling—writing romance.

Chance agrees, only to discover that the beautiful, fierce young woman in need of rescue is actually the very person he’s been hunting: his next mark.

But after he saves her, Lillian Madison awakens in him long-buried dreams and possibilities. Facing the demons of his past, Chance is forced to question his next move. Dare he risk everything by following his heart … and trust that the road to redemption begins with Lillian?

About Lorraine Heath…

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA’s RITA®, a HOLT Medallion, and a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

MY THOUGHTS:

THE GUNSLINGER by Lorraine Heath is an exciting Historical Western Romance set in 1884 Lonesome, Texas. A Novella!

Expanded version of “Long Stretch of Lonesome” novella that appeared in To Tame A Texan Anthology in 1999.”

A quick read! I read it in one setting. Fast paced. Can one change their past? With love anything is possible! I loved how, Chance Wilder, was willing to protect a little boys’ sister, Lillian Madison, from thugs, for “everything” the little boy had, which was… a string, a harmonica, and a bent up coin(a penny).  Filled with secrets, passion, danger, past regrets, guilt, and the power of love. Life changes for both Chance,Lillian, and Lillian’s little brother, from the moment Chance stepped into the ally to help Lillian. I love how Ms. Heath captured the essence of the Gunslinger, and his true nature. The characters are enduring, engaging and the storyline was intriguing as well as well thought out. Misconception was the cause of much distress, and gossip. You must read “The Gunslinger”, you will not regret your choice.   An enjoyable read! I read “To Tame A Texan” anthology years ago, and have to say this new version was awesome!

Now, for your reading pleasure an Excerpt from LONG FOR ME:

The roughed-out log cabin wasn’t much. Perched on the edge of the Ohio River, nearly an hour away from Madison, it was Guy’s personal retreat. He came to fish or just get the hell away from people.
Too bad, she thought, kicking a leg over her bike and staring up at the cabin. Some people might have enjoyed the picturesque drive out here. It had just given her more time to brood, steam, and work herself up. She was probably as close to exploding as she’d been in a good long time.
The door swung open and she found herself staring at the very object of her wrath.
Guy, in the flesh.
Her heartbeat kicked up and she had to swallow the spit that had suddenly pooled in her mouth.
The very, very nice flesh. Curling her hands into fists, she used the bite of her nails into her palms to help get centered. It wasn’t much, but every little bit helped, she figured.
He’d just walked out.
After that night together, after him telling her how he didn’t want her to regret it and how he thought about her—okay, he thought about her naked, or her a**, whatever.
Still.
He’d kinda made her think . . . crazy things.
Then he ignored her.
He’d gone three days, completely ignoring her.
That slow burn of lust settled in her belly—it was a familiar ache, something she’d gotten used to ignoring when it came to him. She needed him for a friend more than she needed him for a lover.
Or so she’d thought.
But then they’d had that night—it had been as amazing as the first night and she needed him like she needed air and he’d just walked away.
She jutted her chin up as he continued to watch her.
Then he turned around and walked back into the cabin.
The door remained open.
Oh, hell. She was just going to have to kick his a**.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO….

~WELCOME JAIME~

MBA&M: Good morning, Jaime, please give our readers some insight on Jaime Rush?

JAIME: Good morning! Thanks much for having me. Jaime Rush is a pseudonym for my real name, Tina Wainscott. As Tina, I’ve published 18 romantic suspense novels. As Jamie, I created the Offspring series, which was more paranormal than my Tina books. And now I’m really jumping into the paranormal with dragons angels and magic!

I’ve always been fascinated by the mysterious, the unexplained, and the downright spooky. With my Hidden series, I’m delving into a world that explains some of the weird stuff that happens to all of us. Like when your socks go missing from the dryer, when half of your watermelon martini is gone and you don’t remember drinking it, or when the hairs on the back of your neck rise for no discernible reason.

MBA&M: Why do you write Paranormal Romance?

JAIME: [Actually, I basically answered that in the previous answer J]

MBA&M: Who influenced you the most in writing this genre?

JAIME: I enjoyed Shana Abe’s Drakon series and I love all of the action in Illona Andrews’s books. I wouldn’t use the word influenced per se, but certainly inspired. When I started reading both their books, I had no intention of writing about shapeshifters. Then I met Cyn, the hero of DRAGON AWAKENED, and everything changed…

Dragon MineMBA&M: What was the driving force behind writing “Dragon Mine”?

JAIME: I like the idea of introducing the series with a novella (or two!) so new readers can sample my writing and the series in a short, inexpensive way. I wanted the first two novellas to be connected, so I made the hero in DRAGON MINE and the heroine in DRAGON RISING twins. And while the initiating factor is their father’s disappearance, each story has its own romance and his/her own plot to solve.

I started writing short stories way back when and then graduated to novels. So the idea of writing a novella, which is sort of in between, was interesting and challenging. I’ve now written five of them and have to say I really enjoy the shorter format. On the downside, you can’t take as much time to really delve into the characters and all their juicy pathos. Still, I find I can pack a lot of plot and character and romance into a short story.

MBA&M: Why a novella, and is a novella harder to write or easier in your opinion?

JAIME: [Again, I guess I answered this question in the previous one.]

MBA&M: “Dragon Mine” is the beginning of a new series,”The Hidden”,correct? What will be the first story up,and how many will be in the series, attentively. Inquiring minds what to know,or me anyway?

JAIME: The first stories of the Hidden are the two novellas. The second one, DRAGON RISING, comes out October 1. Then I’m thrilled that the first three full books, out in both digital and paperback, debut back-to-back starting December 17. Those three books are loosely connected by an overarching plot but are standalone. Which as I read this makes it sound so simple. In reality it made me crazy trying to coordinate all the time lines, villains, and plots.  As far as future books, that will depend on the readers. LOL

Dragon MineMBA&M: “Dragon Mine” is a Paranormal Romantic Suspense, correct? How hard is it to write a romantic suspense with paranormal/fantasy elements? And where do you find research on this matter?

JAIME: Yes, I love and need suspense in my romance. Balancing suspense and the romance can be tricky enough. Throw in the paranormal elements, and it’s a bit like juggling. I can’t say it’s easy, but it is challenging (in a good way). I think the hardest thing about writing paranormal is that you have so many elements to choose from that it can be daunting. Keeping track of, for instance, the different types of Dragons and their powers and their limitations. And demons, oy vey! What can they do, how many types, which ones to use in any particular scene… You get the idea!

MBA&M: Which Paranormal author would you say influenced your writing career, and which author influenced your writing style the most?

JAIME: This sounds a lot like the earlier questions so I think I have covered this too. J

MBA&M: Jaime, what a pleasure to have you with us and our readers today, please tell us where to connect with you and where we may find “Dragon Mine”?

JAIME: It was great to be here! I love connecting with readers and booksellers. The easy place to find out more about my books is my website. For interacting, come by my Facebook page or follow me on Twitter. Thanks!
