ABOUT THE BOOK:

An heiress with a daring proposal. An earl who’s determined to resist her. And a love that just might be written in the stars, in First Earl I See Tonight by Anna Bennett.

Recently jilted by his fiancée, David Gray, Earl of Ravenport is not in the market for a wife. Even if Gray didn’t have his hands full renovating his crumbling country house, it would take more than a bold marriage proposal from a headstrong young beauty to thaw his frozen heart. Gray is confident that spending a week at his ramshackle estate will change her mind about marriage, but every passionate moment he spends with her tempts him to change his…

A talented artist, Miss Fiona Hartley desperately needs her dowry money to pay off a blackmailer set on ruining her sister. The handsome earl seems a sensible choice for a husband…if only she can convince him that romance will play no part. But marrying in name only may prove difficult for Fiona. Gray can’t help but be dazzled by her genuine warmth. Yet as their feelings deepen, Fiona’s deadline looms. Will her secrets destroy them, or is true love their final destiny?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Annabelle Bennett started swiping romances from her mom’s bookshelf as a teenager and decided that books with balls, dukes, and gowns were the best. So, when she had the chance to spend a semester in London she packed her bags—and promptly fell in love with the city, its history, and its pubs. She dreamed of writing romance, but somehow ended up a software analyst instead.

Fortunately, a few years and a few careers later, Anna found her way back to writing the stories she loves and won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart®. She lives in Maryland with her husband and three children, who try valiantly not to roll their eyes whenever she quotes Jane Austen.

Anna’s books include the Wayward Wallflowers series and the Debutante Diaries series.

My Thoughts:

The First Earl I See Tonight by Anna Bennett is a Regency Historical Romance. Book 1 in the “Debutante Diaries”, and it promises to be an exciting new series. Featuring, David Gray, Earl of Ravenport and Miss Fiona Hartley. Fiona is a talented artist being blackmailed, she must save her sister and family secret from scandal.  Gray has had a difficult childhood,  was just jilted by his fiance and his estate is need of finances to restore it to its formal glory.  Gray wants do this for his beloved grandmother, whose losing her eyesight.

A bit slow at first but picks up, about the third chapter.  To me it was a bit confusing at times, some things just didn’t come together for me, especially for the Regency era, but with that said it was an enjoyable and satisfying read. A few surprises along the way. The characters are charming. The plot was interesting but some things just did not fit well, to me. I enjoy a good romance, with  some mystery, suspense, and a HEA, which THE FIRST EARL I SEE TONIGHT does have. When, it all came together it was a bit of a let down, to me, it felt a bit rushed at the end  just before the finale.  Please, don’t get me wrong,  this is an interesting, and  enjoyable read. I enjoyed watching Gray and Fiona’s attraction grow into love and their HEA.

A MAN TRYING TO ESCAPE FROM THE PAST…
When Silas Anson inherits the earldom of Lichfield from a father he never knew, he has one goal: protect his siblings. To do so, he’ll need to do two things: replenish the estate’s depleted coffers, and gain the support of his powerful family—even though they betrayed his mother years ago. NEEDS A WOMAN WHO CAN SEE THE FUTURE.

Excerpt from Bound by the Christmastide Moon:

“Are you certain you do not wish to freshen up before meeting with Lord Lichfield?” Hettie did her utmost to keep up with Mallory as she departed the dining hall. “Mayhap change your gown or have Miss Felicity’s maid re-pin your hair?”
Mallory paused, her aunt colliding with her shoulder at the sudden stop.
She’d dressed that day as she did each morn. The gown she wore had been specifically packed because it highlighted her ample curves and hid her not-so-narrow waist. The ribbon woven through her long, brown curls was of a deep plum that complemented her grey gown. Her shoes were half-boots, sturdy enough for a walk about Tetbery Estate. Except for the ink marring her hand, Mallory appeared as she always did.
Poised. Modest. Genteel.
Everything the daughter of a marquess was raised to be.
That she was anything but poised on the inside was of no consequence, so long as she did her utmost to keep those around her blissfully unaware.
Her talent as an oracle—or a clairvoyant—did not define Mallory. In fact, she was determined to prove her family wrong and live a normal life. That she’d need refrain from touching others—and most objects—did not deter her from believing a normal life could be hers.
“I need not freshen anything. If my simple frock and daily coiffure is not to Lord Lichfield’s liking, then imagine if he learned of my talents.”
“You are not to speak of it,” Hettie hissed. “Your father would—“
“My father would die of apoplexy if I embarrassed him in any way,” Mallory finished. “Think you I am opposed to this match? I assure you, I do.”
Mallory squared her shoulders and marched into the foyer, pausing only to allow the butler to open the parlor door and announce their arrival.
“Lady Henrietta Hughes and Lady Mallory Hughes,” Tolsworth proclaimed, giving Mallory a reassuring nod as she swept past him and into the room.
She was vaguely aware of her aunt entering the parlor behind her and the butler pulling the door closed after stating tea would arrive with all due haste; however, Mallory stood rooted to the spot.
She hadn’t thought about what Lord Lichfield would look like, nor considered his age when she’d been told of the potential match. He could have been plagued with a hunched back or vertically challenged, but she hadn’t questioned that.
The man who stood to greet them was not what she’d envisioned in an arranged marriage.
He was not stout or rounded. He was in possession of all his extremities. And he certainly was not of an age past his prime.
Lord Lichfield did, however, tower over both Mallory and Hettie.
The earl’s shoulders were broad enough to pull a cart or roll a boulder up a hill.
And he was handsome. Not in the tradition English sense with a sharp nose, angular jaw, and rigid stance. No, it was far more—yet far less—what her brethren in muslin considered a dashing man.
He had a sophisticated air about him. As if he had seen things, experienced things, Mallory could only guess at.
His clenched jaw, and his clear blue eyes cascading over her, made Mallory wish she’d donned a gown that didn’t constrict her breathing in such a manner, as she found it exceedingly difficult to gain a proper breath.
Her stomach fluttered—actually fluttered as he gazed upon her.
A single black curl fell over one eye, and he pushed it back before turning his attention to Aunt Hettie.
“Heaven’s above,” Hettie hissed in her ear.

********

My thoughts:

Coven at Callington by Shereen Vedam is a delightful and unique Fantasy Romance set in the Regency world of 1815 with some very unique plot ideas. Book 1 in “The Cauldron Effect.”

An exciting and complicated story that blends religion,  magic, witches, warlocks, faes, intrigue and more. Thomas Drake Saint-Clair, Earl of Braden, and a Guard of the Green Cross, is “tasked by the archbishop to rescue a missing boy and return him to his warlock father”, what he finds is, an unholy war between witches and warlocks. Merryn Pendraven, is a newly confirmed Coven Protectress, who rushes headlong to the rescue of a witch’s son. Totally convinced the same evil warlock who was responsible for her younger brother’s death is  behind this boy’s kidnapping, as well.

This story blends a magical world with the religious world seemlessly with great world building.  However,  at first it was a bit disconcerting, the dialogue between all the creatures was a bit hard to understand but once you get into the story it all comes together with clearer understanding.  It was easy to fall in love with Merryn and Braden, the otherworldly characters and their worlds and stay glued to the pages. A very intriguing mixture of magic, witchcraft,  religion and finding love between two different worlds with a few surprises and twists and turns.  Definitely a rip-roaring Regency ride with a delightful witchy tale. If you enjoy tales of magic, witches, faes, mystery,  warlocks, a bit of suspense and the excitement of finding a balance between love and the diversity of love between  different worlds, you will definitely enjoy the COVEN AT CALLINGTON.  The author did an exceptionally good job of blending a well written and well crafted story with the WOW factor.  Brilliantly written! This was my first time reading this author’s writing style and I was delighted with the premise of this new series.  I look forward to reading more of Shereen Vedam’s stories.

EXCERPT 1, from Chapter One

February 1569

She charged into battle with the zeal of one who demands justice and will accept nothing less.

They had been riding all afternoon on the old Stanegate Highway, from Carlisle east toward Naworth Castle, where the rebels were mustering. There were five of them besides herself—two friends she had persuaded to join the fight and three others they had picked up along the way. It was a frigid February day, piercing deep to the bone with an unforgiving cold. When the beacons came into view at last, their flames a call to battle, she glanced at her companions triumphantly.

They scarcely had time to give their mounts a rest and let them graze and drink before the order was given to move out. She kept the bright red banners, adorned with white gryphons, in view and hoped her friends remained close by. There were infantry and horsemen as far as the eye could see, though they looked like a ragtag lot. Nobody in mail or armor. She rode on, keeping her eyes on the banners ahead, from time to time searching the crowd for her friends. But to no avail.

The queen’s forces assembled in the distance. It was almost as though they wished to sneak past. No judge of the difference between brilliant or foolhardy military strategies, she accepted chasing after an enemy who clearly did not wish to engage as part of a plan. Lord Dacre was their commander, and in her vengeful fervor she would follow him anywhere. On his orders, they gave chase until finally, circling ahead of the queen’s southern army, they lay in wait near the Gelt River where Hell Beck joined it.

In mere moments, her belief that justice would triumph shattered.

Hundreds of horsemen at the rear of the queen’s army began a vicious attack, pushing Dacre’s troops out onto the heath. She dismounted, electing to take her chances as one of the infantry. Within minutes, mayhem ensued. Mounted troops wielding lances made short work of the men, most of whom carried nothing more than dirks. A lucky few were armed with pikes. Arrows flew, and she ducked every time she saw a bow raised. But before long, the smoke from the harquebuses was so thick, she could see nothing, nor could she hear anything other than the screams and shouts of both the rebels and queen’s men. What a fool she’d been, expecting an orderly military action. She’d gotten chaos instead.

Their footmen broke through and tore into the rebels with pikes, and cavalrymen attacked with lances. She looked on helplessly as men around her were run through with rapiers or felled by blows to the head. Springing to her feet, she lunged onward, too fired up—and apparently too brainless—to sense the inevitability of the outcome, or even the extreme peril she was in.

Having removed her travel cloak, she shivered in her thin shirt and doublet. Neither did much to ward off the bone-chilling cold. Ahead, mist rose from the river like a curtain of gauze. She tripped over more than one lifeless body, both human and beast. Shouts of command and cries of the wounded were muted in the dense air. Clutching the handle of a dirk that had belonged to her brother, she longed for the chance to put it to use. If she could surprise one of the queen’s men, catch one of them unawares…a life for her brother’s life. That was all she wanted.

The wind rose, clearing the smoke. Glimpsing an opening, she plunged forward, straight toward a giant of a man wearing the queen’s badge and without a weapon to hand. She was ready for him. With an upward thrust, she aimed for his heart. But with one step back, he was out of reach. She was stabbing at the air. He brought a beefy fist down on her wrist and knocked the dirk out of her hand, then gave a low chuckle before grasping the back of her doublet and hoisting her a few feet off the ground. “God’s wounds, you’re no bigger than a wench,” he said.

“Because she is a wench, fool,” a second man said, stepping out of the darkness. This one wore a short beard. Or perhaps it was only stubble—she couldn’t tell in the dark. He reached down and picked up her dagger.

“We could have some fun with her, I’ll warrant,” the giant said. He still held her aloft as though she weighed no more than a cloth doll. While he mulled it over, she kicked him in the groin, as hard as she could while swaying in the air. He doubled over and dropped her, and the second man laughed. She leaped to her feet and ran.

Unfortunately, she managed only a few steps before an arm hard as stone and every bit as unyielding wrapped around her. It was the bearded man. The terror, the panic, all the unacknowledged dread she’d been holding inside now burst out in one long, agonized plea. “Let me go, I beg you. I have a family to look after.”

He snorted. “A bit late to think of that, is it not?” He ordered the giant to bind her hands behind her back, and they dragged her, one on each side, to an area where prisoners were being held, and dumped her to the cold ground. But not before they’d spotted the scabbard tied at her waist and relieved her of it.

The next day they marched to Carlisle Castle, and she, Madeleine Vernon, daughter of Philip and Blanche Vernon of Carlisle and sister of the executed Robert, found herself thrown into a dank, stinking cell, fit only for murderers, thieves, and rebels.

About the Book:

When Elsinore Cosgrove escapes a ballroom in search of adventure, she has no idea it will lead to a hasty marriage. The youngest daughter of a duke, all she wants is to make her own choices. Now she’s engaged to an infuriating, handsome Scottish baron who doesn’t even know her name! Using all her feminine wiles, along with advice gleaned from a training guide for hunting hounds, Elsinore is determined to mold her baron into the husband she wants.
Quin Graham is a man with many secrets. If another scandal can be avoided with a sham marriage, so be it. Only his fiancee isn’t at all what he expected and the clumsy, curious, and clever Elsinore refuses to be set aside. For reasons he’s unwilling to explain, the last thing Quin needs is to fall in love with his wife.

EXCERPT

Quin paced the drawing room of his rented townhouse like a caged animal, fighting the urge to punch something—a wall, the fireplace…a duke. He snatched an open bottle of whisky off the writing desk on his next circuit across the room and took a long swig. The liquid burned a

trail down his throat and settled into an angry puddle in his gut.

Why on earth had the daft lass kissed him? That too brief kiss was full of hope and promise and all the unspoken words in a lover’s glance. At least it was to him. If only she hadn’t looked at him with those guileless eyes, if only she hadn’t smiled at him so sweetly and spoke to him so earnestly. Quin sighed. He should have walked away and left her to be someone else’s problem.

He took another long pull of the whisky, emptying the bottle. As of this evening, his options had dwindled to either marriage or a duel with a duke. It rankled nearly beyond his tolerance to have his hand forced by a woman. His last encounter with a conniving female had led him to his current…predicament.

Quin smiled ruefully, it was such an innocuous sounding word for the mess his life had become. Betrayal, murder, misery—all summed up into that one harmless sounding word by the man he’d hired to investigate it. The word did so little to convey the hell he was enduring. And yet, no one must know.

Quin reached inside his jacket pocket, pulled out a silver portrait case, and snapped it open. A miniature of his son occupied one side, the other was empty. He could never bring himself to put her picture there, even before—well, even before everything. He’d made the charcoal portrait of his son less than six months ago. It showed a chubby, happy toddler with bouncing curls and a wide slobbery grin.

Little had he known when he’d drawn it, that other than a granite headstone, the sketch would be the only tangible evidence that his son had existed at all.

My thoughts
How to Train Your Baron by Diana Lloyd is a book 1 in a new and exciting series,”What Happens in the Ballroom”.  “A Regency romp mash-up of Cinderella and Humpty-Dumpty.”
A fun, entertaining and intriguing story with a calamity of mishaps, adventure, humor, witty banter, suspense and intrigue, makes for some hilarious moments.
This is the story of  Lord Quin Graham, a Scottish baron and Elsinore Cosgrove, the daughter of a duke, and their hasty marriage,  after being found in a compromising position. Set in the ballrooms of the England to the Scottish highlands, readers will find themselves turning pages and laughing out loud, but there are also moments of danger, plenty of mystery, suspense and intrigue.  Well written, well crafted with engaging and entertaining characters.  The storyline flows seamlessly and effortlessly.  I absolutely loved HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BARON and look forward to more from Diana Lloyd  What an impressive debut book/author!!

About the Book:

London, April 1825
Lord Jakob Radclyffe left his past behind in the Far East. Or so he thinks until a ruthless thief surfaces in London, threatening to ruin his daughter’s reputation. With the clock ticking, Jake needs the scandalous Lady Olivia Montfort’s connections in the art world to protect his daughter’s future.
Olivia, too, has a past she’d like to escape. By purchasing her very own Mayfair townhouse, she’ll be able to start a new life independent from all men. There’s one problem: she needs a powerful man’s name to do so. The Viscount St. Alban is the perfect name.
A bargain is struck.
What Olivia doesn’t anticipate is the temptation of the viscount. The undeniable spark of awareness that races between them undermines her vow to leave love behind. Soon, she has no choice but to rid her system of Jake by surrendering to her craving for a single scorching encounter.
But is once enough? Sometimes once only stokes the flame of desire higher and hotter. And sometimes once is all the heart needs to risk all and follow a mad passion wherever it may lead.

Excerpt:
His feet began a slow prowl forward, steadily erasing the distance between them, inch by deliberate
inch. She should feel panicked, or, at least, unsettled, by his purposeful approach. But those feelings refused to
take hold. The anxiety and anticipation of seconds ago flared into a single overwhelming sensation: desire,
white hot, ravenous.
He drew within a foot of her and stopped. The only sound in the room the jagged in and out of her
breath.
So this was what it was to be a wanton? Aching from the nearness of his withheld touch, excruciatingly
delicious and exquisitely tortured all at once.
“Why are you here?” she muttered.
“How should I answer that question?” he returned, his voice a low, masculine register that quaked her to
her core. His head lowered, lips hovering just above hers for one, two, three rapid heartbeats, his breath a
whisper across her lips. “Like this?”

My Thoughts

Tempted by the Viscount by Sofie Darling is a daring, witty, sexy yet emotionally complex. A “Shadows and Silk” Regency Romance, but can be read as a stand alone.  This is my first read by this author,  and I highly enjoyed TEMPTED BY THE VISCOUNT.

Well crafted with charming and enjoyable characters.  The storyline is filled with an emotional complexity that will keep readers turning pages.  It is funny at times, with witty dialogue,  sexy, danger, shame, fear, deceit,  deception,  trust, guilt, truth, and a HEA. There are many struggles and challenges for Lord Jakob Radclyffe,  Viscount St. Alban and Lady Olivia Montfort, in order to meet these challenges to find their HEA. I thoroughly enjoyed this unpredictable,  intriguing and interesting story. A must read!

Tammy began writing when the shows and movies she watched didn’t end the way she wanted them to end. Whether it’s historical or contemporary, for her, there must always be a happy ending. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her husband and two boys near Cleveland, Ohio. Without their sacrifice and understanding, she believes she would have never been able to pursue her passion for writing or her accomplishment of becoming a published author.

MY THOUGHTS

A Mistress for Penndrake by Tammy L. Bailey is an entertaining Regency Romance. Ms. Bailey is a new author, and for a debut author did a great job with this story. I did find it a bit slow at times, predictable, but entertaining, humorous at times, and enjoyed watching the H/H with their witty banter and laugh out loud moments. The heroine is a strong, and feisty. The hero is demanding, and arrogant. Together they made an interesting pair. The banter, struggles and challenges along with the plot pulled this story together nicely. Ms. Bailey’s writing style is interesting and entertaining. Written in third person POV, the revenge part of the hero, needed a bit more telling, some readers may misconstrue the premise or not totally understand. What the hero believed was not a true understanding of the circumstances. Although, both parties were being a bit manipulated, they soon come to terms with their feelings, when they nearly lost it all. Overall, I think this author did a great job, while I felt some things were a bit repetitive, I felt Ms. Bailey pulled off an entertaining and interesting Regency Romance. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. Great job, Tammy L. Bailey! Entertaining and a fun read!

Synopsis

Love is worth a little scandal.

Yet the more time she spends with her new husband, the more Milly starts to wonder if the marriage she never wanted may be the best thing that’s ever happened to her. ☆☆REVIEW☆☆

A GENTLEMAN NEVER SURRENDERS by Lauren Smith is a great Recency Romance. Book 2 in her “Sins and Scandals” series, but can be read as a stand a lone. I would suggest reading Book 1, but not necessary to enjoy this book.
Well written with engaging and a bit troublesome characters. The plot is interesting, compelling. A bit unpredictable, and very enjoyable. Can a marriage of convenience become a marriage of Love?
A story of love, redemption, and finding a HEA. I was hooked from the beginning. I enjoyed watching the H/H come to love each other after such a rocky start. Ms. Smith did a wonderful job telling this story. She brought the reader to a better understanding of the H/H in a way that was captivating and compelling. A must read for Recency Romance lovers. Another great read by tthe marvelous Lauren Smith!
