CHARACTER INTERVIEW (Jessie Hart of Heart’s Desire by T.J. Kline)

1) Welcome and thank you so much for stopping by. Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Jessie Hart and I run HeartFire Ranch. Growing up, it was a dude ranch owned and run by my parents and I helped them, especially when it came to the horses. My dad had just told me that I could start focusing on my real passion, rescuing and rehabilitating abused horses, and use the ranch to do it but they were killed in a car accident. Now I’m trying to run both aspects of HeartFire by myself. Well, not entirely alone, my brother, Justin, sister, Julia and cousin, Bailey help me but they are running their own businesses. I’ve been able to pair some at-risk youth with horses to benefit everyone as well.

I need to make this work. I won’t let my family’s legacy die out on my watch.

2) What is it that makes you different?

Different? I guess that depends on who you’re comparing me to. I’m different than my sister and cousin because they are the nicer women in our family. I think I inherited more than my fair share of my mother’s Latin temper but that also means I’m passionate. I’m different from other women because I don’t balk at doing a man’s job. It doesn’t matter to me what part of ranch work, I’ll do it all – bucking hay, cleaning stalls, mending fences. I don’t have the luxury to be picky about typical gender stereotypes.

3) What’s your greatest asset?

I’d like to think that passion is my greatest asset. I am single-minded when it comes to something, or someone, I feel strongly about. I can’t stomach the thought of horses being sold for slaughter, or left to die in an empty field, when I can help. I’ve seen the lives of these animals change drastically. Some with nothing more than some attention from the foster kids who visit the ranch. And the horses have been able to fill a need and help heal the kids. I’m too passionate about what I do to give up, even in the face of dire circumstances, like bankruptcy.

4) What is your biggest weakness?

Besides my stubborn streak? I have a tendency to set my feet, and my mind, on a certain path and not want to stray from it. If you happen to be on the wrong side of the battle in my eyes, you’re against me and should watch out.

5) What are you afraid of? Have you told anyone?

I’m afraid of losing the ranch, losing what my parents built. I’m afraid of not measuring up to the expectation my father had for all three of us, especially since I’m the only one who hasn’t been able to turn a profit in my business. I’m worried that I’ll have to let the rescue fall to the wayside in order to bring the ranch back into the black and return to running the dude ranch. But I don’t like talking about it. Doing that would be like admitting defeat and I’m not ready for that yet.

6) Have you ever been in love? How did that end?

I have. Eight years ago, Nathan Kerrington came to spend the summer at the ranch with my brother while they were on break from college. He was a city-boy who had no idea what he’d gotten himself into. But, there was something about him that just drew me to him. Maybe I was just young and naïve but when he promised me it wasn’t a summer fling, that he loved me, I believed him. Then he disappeared and I never heard from him again. At least, until a few days ago.

7) What is the biggest goal in your life right now?

The biggest goal is to see HeartFire Ranch as a successful rescue and rehab for abused horses. I’d like to eventually hold camps where at-risk youth can spend time but, (shrugs) a lot of things would have to fall into place for that to happen.

8) Any regrets? Would you go back and change what happened? If so, how? If not, why not?

Absolutely. I would go back to that summer, knowing what I know now, and never give Nathan Kerrington the time of day. I can admit that a piece of me broke forever when I realized he lied. I’ve never forgiven him for it and not sure I ever could. He played my entire family for fools. See, I told you I’m stubborn. (wink)

9) What is the one thing you never want to give up?

HeartFire Ranch, my family. I grew up on this ranch and love every foot of it. Losing it would devastate me. It would be like losing my parents all over again.

10) If you were stranded on the side of the road, who would you want with you and what would you do?

This has happened to me several times until recently when I got a new truck. Honestly, I’d like to be stranded with one of my horses. It might not sound particularly exciting to many people but I’d go for a ride. I’d prefer a horse to a person most days of the week. You don’t have to pretend when you’re with a horse.

Let’s play a game! Pick only one answer. (You can also chose a question from the game above.)

1) Beach or Mountains – Mountains, The Ridge on HeartFire Ranch specifically

2) Car or Truck – Truck, have you seen my new 4×4? It’s a beauty!

3) Popcorn or Candy at the movies? – Candy, I’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth

4) Bedroom or Kitchen? – Barn

5) Alpha or Beta? I’m an Alpha and two Alphas don’t usually mix well.

6) Naughty or nice? Naughty

7) Sweet or Spicy? Spicy

8) Her/Him on top or you on top? Didn’t I mention I’m an Alpha…Me on top

9) Handcuffs or Scarves? (arching brow) Neither really but if I had to choose, cuffs

10) Love or Lust? I prefer lust, it’s easier and no one gets hurt.

Hello Debra and welcome to My Book Addiction and More!

Hi! Thank you so much for having me here today.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few tidbits about Debra Kayn?

I live in the beautiful coastal mountains of Oregon. I’m married to the man I met on a blind date when I was 19. We have four kids ranging in age from 16 to 22. During the summer, I love to ride motorcycles, play tennis, and go fishing on our creek. In the winter, it’s all about being outside. I love the snow and cold. I love soft caramel squares. I buy too many boots. And, I own a pink sparkly ReelChase fishing pole that lights up when I reel in a fish.

Oh! And, I’m famous in my family for teaching a 270 lb pig named Harley to jog with me every morning.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Rodeo Rebel”?

Unlike Florentine, my heroine, I grew up with all brothers. I learned to play hard or go home. I turned out to be quite the tomboy. Florentine is the tomboy in the McDougal family, and I wanted to show that women could be sexy, nurturing, and still compete against the men in one of the world’s most dangerous sport…bull riding.

MBA&M: Can you give our readers some insight/challenges into writing a story pertaining to the rodeo and ranch life?

Writing about ranch life was like writing about my own life. I’m a country gal. Riding bulls was a whole ‘nother thing. I sat beside my hubs and watched tons of bull riding events, and I even contacted a professional rodeo rider who gave me an insider’s view of what they really think of women riding bulls. Of course, he was supportive of females participating in rodeo, but it’s not an easy sport for a woman to compete with the bulls. Cowboys get awful protective of women, whether riding bulls or doing something dangerous.

MBA&M: What where some interesting facts you find while writing “Rodeo Rebel”?

There have been a few women who have rode in the PBRA. It’s hard information to find, and it’s still not clear whether all of them merely competed against other PBRA riders or were actual members of the PBRA.

MBA&M: What are some things that influence your writing, and what do you have in your writing cave?

My real life experiences influence my writing the most. I love small towns and the west coast. I also love the ethnic and high morals of a cowboy. They’re all sexy gentleman who aren’t afraid to get dirty.

My writing cave is in my family room. I have a huge desk in the corner. The more noise the kids make or the radio/tv blasting, the more I can slip into my zone and write. I’ve tried to write in silence, but it drives me crazy.

MBA&M: What is in your “To Read” pile?

I’m anxious to start Deadly Secrets, Loving Lies by Cynthia Cooke and The Witness by Nora Roberts. The rest are a secret, because if my hubs finds out exactly how many books are in my TBR pile, he’s going to question how much of the grocery money I spend each week for books. Right now, I’m flying under his radar. 😉

MBA&M: What author would you say most influenced your writing style?

Each book I read influences me. I’m a huge believer that if you’re going to be a writer, you need to read. Every author has a different voice that works for them, and helps me find my voice in my writing.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where “Rodeo Rebel” is available?

I would love to. Rodeo Rebel is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Here’s a blurb…

When widower and land baron Cole Reardon acquired the Turner Grain Corporation, he didn’t know the company sponsored a bull rider. He refuses to support thrill-seekers dumb enough to get on the back of a crazed animal. He’s not willing to risk his fortune and livelihood when he has his daughter’s well-being to consider. Not even when the bull rider is the sexiest woman he’s ever seen.

Bull rider Florentine McDougal plans to turn pro after the season championship, fulfilling her lifelong dream of succeeding in a man’s world. That is, until Cole Reardon shows up and threatens to break his sponsorship contract with her. Now everything she’s worked for is less than eight seconds away from being destroyed.

Cole distracts Florentine with his sexy mouth and unreasonable demands, and he’s not going to compromise his integrity. But she’s not going to let him loose until she has pro status. And neither will come away from this dust-up unscathed.
