Excerpt

Callum heard the whine of the pulley on the rope.

His stomach dropped as he stared at the curtain wall, rooted to the ground in disbelief and fear. Only one person he knew would be forced to escape the castle like that.

When the clouds drifted from the moon and the shape of a woman appeared from the darkness, barely hanging on to a rickety pulley, he knew it had to be Maggie. Her wild hair streamed behind her as she streaked toward them from high above.

“Lord have mercy,” Artair said. Beside him, Gill made the sign of the cross.

“Christ Almighty, she’s going too fast,” Drustan croaked, sounding as helpless as Callum felt.

She was bare-legged again, her skirts tied up between her legs, and when he saw her lift them up to the rope, it propelled him into motion.

He jumped from his horse directly to the tree and climbed as fast as he could, passing Finn on his way down. Dread tightened Callum’s chest. He wouldn’t make it in time to catch her or soften the impact. Then he heard a bang and the sound of the pulley dragging on the rope, and he knew she’d popped it off the track to slow herself down.

By God, she might make it after all if the rope didn’t fray.

Resourceful woman!

He drew even with the lookout and saw her glide into view and bump arse-first into the tree. Seconds later, a gust of laughter burst from her lungs before she clamped a hand over her mouth. All his fear turned to relief, then boiled into anger over what might have happened—just as it had when she’d been chased up the tree by the wolves.

He had to squeeze the words past the tightness of his throat and clenched jaw. “Maggie MacDonnell, if I e’er find you up a tree again, lucky to be alive, I swear I’ll lock you in my bloody castle and throw away the key!”

She yelped in surprise and almost fell, but her harness held, and she tipped halfway over instead. “Callum?”

He hauled himself up beside her on the platform as she scrambled to right herself. Her skirts fell back to her ankles. He steadied her as he lifted his knife above her head and sawed viciously at the rope. Moments later, it gave way, fell to the ground, and slithered back to the castle.

His emotions careened inside him, all tangled up and whipped into a frenzy like her hair from the pulley ride. Without any thought, consumed by raw need and want, he tucked the knife into his belt and hauled her against him, tight and hot.

Her startled breath fanned his lips as his hand squeezed high on the back of her thigh, pulling it around him.

“Callum MacLean!” She sounded shocked and breathless but not admonishing. Her fingers curled into his waist, anchoring herself instead of pushing him away.

He sank his other hand into the mass of curls at the back of her head and held her in place. Her eyes met his for just a second, and he knew she wanted the same thing he did—wanted him to devour her, to reaffirm that she’d made it, that she was alive!

He caught her mouth without warning, lips open, tongue stroking in, tasting her, savoring her, until neither one of them could breathe. He nibbled down her throat, his hand sliding along her thigh to her knee.

“I’ve dreamt of this, of you, every night since we’ve been apart.” Voice rough, he sounded almost feral.

She answered with a groan as he slipped his hand under her skirts and cupped her thigh, trailing his fingertips along the sensitive inner muscles. They quivered against his palm, and her breath rasped through her lungs. When he reached the top, she gasped, rocked her hips toward him, her heel lifting higher to push into his backside.

He pressed closer and inhaled her scent—the smell of fresh air and sunshine and that unique bouquet of Maggie that he would sometimes wake to even though she wasn’t there.

He knew he should stop, that they weren’t safe yet, but his need for her overwhelmed rational thought. His body was so filled with lust, with feelings, that he could barely reason and strained to sink into her warmth.

He lifted his head and watched her in the moonlight. Her eyes had closed, her mouth had parted. When he skimmed his fingertips along the crease at the top of her leg, her throat arched and lips quavered on her sudden inhalation.

She released his waist and slid her hands up his back to tangle in his hair, pulling and twisting in the short strands.

“We are betrothed, Maggie,” he ground out. “All we need is this final intimacy, then before God and man, we’ll be married. We doona need a priest. Let me join with you, sweetling.”

She groaned and opened her eyes. “I canna believe you’ve asked me this. We’re in a bloody tree, surrounded by our enemies. Your men are just below!”

The low, rough timbre of her voice sent shivers up his spine. “We’re alive. When I saw you flying down that rope, knowing you could fall at any moment, going too fast to land safely…” His throat tightened, and he couldn’t continue.

She pressed her cheek against his, her breath huffing past her lips in warm bursts of air. Every puff sent a jolt down to his groin, tightening his stones. When her teeth dragged over his stubble, he knew it was with a mix of desire and anger, and he wanted to bite back.

“You left me,” she accused, her voice filled with hurt, with fury.

“Aye, and I’m sorry. My father died, Maggie. They whispered he committed suicide, but I knew it was murder. I couldnae keep you safe at my home until I had answers.”

He released her leg and cupped his hands around her face, brought her gaze to his. “But this time, I came back. I left so I could return to the castle and save you.”

“I didn’t need you to save me. I needed you not to leave.”

**Excerpt from THE HIGHLANDER’S STOLEN BRIDE:**

What is the bastard up to?
Magnus “Strath” Sutherland, the Laird of Dornoch and Earl of Strathnavor, sat on his horse in the woods just beyond the perimeter of Northwyck Castle. He’d been sent south on a mission by his King, Robert the Bruce. One, to determine if the daughter of Lord Northwyck was dead as had been claimed, and also to stop a certain vile Sassenach lord from his continued raids at the border, who may or may not be holding her captive. That man was in the castle before him.
A plan to ambush Belfinch and his men on the road had been thwarted when the whoreson disappeared. Unfamiliar with the land this far past the English border, Strath and his men had found their quarry on the moors riding at a clipped pace toward this castle. This turnabout would work in their favor it seemed, since he could now take care of both of his king’s requests at once.
The keep was only about four stories high, if he had to guess, and the wall was about half that. There was a thin moat around the perimeter, and a village to the west. Smoke filtered out of a few chimneys in the village, but it was only late afternoon, so most of the peasants would likely be in the fields working. Smoke came from several chimneys in the castle keep.
From the intelligence Strath had been able to gather, this was the home of another man, the Earl of Northwyck. None of Belfinch’s men had waited outside, which meant the Earl of Northwyck was used to the men coming here, or he’d been forced. But Strath was betting on him being an ally. If that were the case, which seemed likely, it would behoove him and his men to remove all the threats.
This was war, after all. And if he let them go, they’d only continue the border raids he’d been sent to stop. Strath wasn’t about to disappoint his king. As to why the king cared about a lass, that was a question he’d have to leave unanswered, for his liege had not offered the information.
“What did ye find?” he asked when Tomaidh, his finest scout and best mate, returned.
“Two entrances that I could make out. The main gate has a wide drawbridge over the moat, still lowered from when Belfinch’s men went inside, and a postern gate that looks to be accessible only by a narrow drawbridge, but it was not lowered. The walls are guarded by a dozen men, more concentrated on the front gate with only a few at the postern. And I think one spotted me.”
“Damn.” Strath, as any warlord about to lay siege, much preferred the element of surprise.
“I was careful, but when I mounted my horse by the woods, I think my sword hilt caught the sun just when there was a break in the clouds. I heard a horn blown in the distance, which I’m guessing was the warning. I didn’t come straight here. I rode in the opposite direction and circled back through the woods in case they sent anyone out to follow me.”
“Ye did good.”
“I’m sorry, laird.”
“Dinna fash over it, Tomaidh. We’ll wait then. If they spotted ye, they’ll likely be preparing for an unwanted guest. With enough time, they will think spotting ye was nothing more than someone riding through. They will let their guard down.” Probably not all the way, but enough so he could still attack with success.
And he would succeed.

My thoughts:

When a Scot Gives His Heart by Julie Johnstone is an incredibly exciting Scottish Romance. While, book #7, in THE HIGHLANDER VOWS: ENTANGLED HEARTS series, it can be read as a stand.

Set in 1358 Scotland, I was thoroughly invested in Callum Grant and Marsaili Campbell’s  story from begging to end. Their story lingered long after the last page. Filled with romance, danger, excitement, treachery,  betrayal, continued threats, death defying struggles and passionate encounters,  kept me turning pages all through the night. A few moments of heart stopping incidents kept me emotionally invested in Callum and Marsaili’s story. Loved how their story continued to evolve. Another must read by Julie Johnstone! I always know when I pick up one of her books, I’ll not only be entertained,  entangled and emotionally invested, but will also have a few hours of complete and utterly satisfying moments of another era and time.

My Thoughts:

Passion and Plunder by Collette Cameron is yet another amazing and exciting Scottish Historical Romance in this thrilling series. Set in Tornbury Fortress, Scottish Highlands 1819. While, #5 in her highly anticipated “Highland Heather Romancing a Scot” series, it can be read as a stand alone.

This is the story of Lydia Farnsworth, the daughter of laird Bailoch Farnsworth and the only remaining heir to Tornbury Fortress due to a series of misfortunes. Her beloved father is dying as well. And, Alasdair McTavish, son of Craiglocky Keep’s war chief. He is a seasoned warrior, as well as brawn, strong and determined with a secret. He’s sent to Tornbury to train the Farnsworth soldiers as requested by laird Bailoch to Alasdair’s clan laird.

OMG, what a thrilling, exciting story with suspense, a bit of mystery, betrayal and the possibility of love and finding a HEA.

“Passion and Plunder” has twists and turns, a few surprises, and a passion for life. Lydia, being the only true heir, except for her mother’s sniffling nephew, Ross, to Tornbury Fortress, believes her dying father will name her as his sucessor, so she tries to prove her worth to him and the clan. Alasdair, has dreamt of Lydia for awhile, but couldn’t act on his feelings because of his secret, until trouble threatens Lydia’s life, then all bets are off, he’d do anything to protect her and her clan.

“Passion and Plunder” is a fast paced story with a smoothly flowing plot, that is easy to follow. The characters are well rounded, well-developed as well as, engaging and captivating. This story was one of those Scottish reads where, the characters and the plot are believable and realistic for the Era.

I throughly enjoyed Lydia and Alasdair’s story, how they came to stop fighting their feelings, and got down to what they truly wished. Until….Alasdair’s secret came to life, then things change, for both he and Lydia. Can they find their way to a HEA, and their true love?

I enjoy Collette Cameron’s writing style, her vivid details, her charactizations, her detailed plots and her true sense of the Scottish clans, and the troubles that plague them. A truly masterful and brilliant storyteller. I was once again glued to the pages of “Passion and Plunder”. A very exciting and intriguing story! A great read for fans of Scottish Historical Romance, ones who enjoy a great story of romance, danger, betrayal and the passion of life. Another hit for Collette Cameron!! A true treasure!

RELEASE DAY BLITZ~ THE THIEF’S COUNTESS~~CECELIA MECCA…with #Review

Happy release day, Cecelia Mecca to My Book Addiction and More, today!!

All of us at MBA&M, wish you a very successful adventure!

Without further ado, meet, Dubut author,  Cecelia Mecca!!

The Border Series is set along the Anglo-Scottish border in the 13th century. Why that time and place?

I’ve always known I wanted to write an English medieval romance. Although I personally read and love Highlander romances, my primary interest has always been in England; I am an unapologetic Anglophile. I thought it might be fun to use the tumultuous border region with divided loyalties between the English and Scottish as a backdrop for the series. As for the time period, I wanted to pre-date the Scottish Wars of Independence since so much has already been written during that time period.

MBA&M: Where do you get your story ideas?

I begin with the history. One detail from a real-life event or person often sparks an entire story.

And the characters?

Again, real-life inspiration is essential. Rather than flush out every aspect of a character, I usually begin with a person I know in mind. From there I conduct a character interview and am continually asking myself what motives the character? What are his/her external and internal goals? How does every action in the book reflect the desire to achieve those goals? I keep a chart of every scene and “fact check” myself against it after each writing session.

How many books will the Border Series include?

This has been the number one question I’ve received thus far. The prequel novella is out now and book one, The Thief’s Countess, has just been released. I’m currently editing book two and have already begun to plot book three, both of which are expected to release in 2017. In addition, there are at least five or six characters already mentioned whose stories I can’t wait to tell. So I don’t see an end to the Border Series any time soon, although I do not currently have a set number of books in mind.

What has been your favorite part of the process so far?

That’s an easy one. Interacting with readers. It’s been so much fun to talk about the characters I’ve lived with for so many years with others. The feedback and support has been almost overwhelming. I began a weekly live video chat on my Facebook page, #MedievalMonday Q&A Giveaway to answer some of the questions I’ve been receiving and reward my amazing readers with goodies along the way. My readers rock!

The gorgeous, complicated and alluring lady is everything he’d want in a woman—and everything he can’t have.

The Countess

With her betrothed coming to claim her hand in marriage and a distant cousin intent on usurping her earldom, Lady Sara Caiser feels beset by controlling, unwanted men. Author Biography

A former English teacher, Cecelia combines two of her passions, romance novels and the middle ages, in debut novel The Thief’s Countess. Combining alpha male types and strong female heroines, Cecelia transports readers to an admittedly romanticized time of knights and castles. She lives in Northeast, Pennsylvania with her husband and two young children where she can be found either planning a Disney trip, watching period dramas or convincing her children to watch Star Wars. She is firmly House Stark and Gryffindor.

MY THOUGHTS

Highland Spy: Mercenary Maidens Series, Book 1 by Madeline Martin definitely shows craftsmanship in writing a mesmerizing Medieval Scottish Romance. Book 1 promises readers an exciting thrill ride into the “Mescenary Maidens” series. WOW! Set in a delapicated castle in Scotland and at the English court.

Ariana Fitzroy, after losing her family and her fortune, resorts to card games at court to survive, which she thinks she has the capability of winning. Connor Grant, is a trainer of fallen women from the English court and a broken personal assassin to the king. Which is where he encounters Ariana, cheating at cards, he gives her the option of going to prison or going with him in training. Of course, she accepts his offer. This is how she becomes his newest trainee.

“Highland Spy” is emotionally charged, intriguing, mesmerizing and utterly captivating! It has second chances, betrayal, challenges, female spies, claiming an inheritance once stolen, retribution, facing the consequences life has dealt head on, overcoming hopelessness to become confident, strong, and of course, romance and finding love. But will Ariana and Connor find their HEA or lose all to lies and deception?
The secondary characters are as enticing as the hero/heroine. They are very intriguing and makes the reader wish to learn more of their circumstances and how they became spies. This story has twists and turns, and surprises I didn’t see coming, betrayals I never preserved until the evil was encountered. I was captivated from the first few pages to the last page and beyond. I can not wait to read more of this exciting and thrilling series. Another must read Medieval Scottish Romance by Madeline Martin, who has become another favorite author of mine. She holds her readers in awe, and totally entranced in her stories. Definitely a WOW moment! Highly recommended! Fans of Medevial romance, Scottish romance, second chances, fast paced stories and well written romance are sure to enjoy “Highland Spy” by MadelineMartin. I definitely enjoyed this tale of live, love and finding a HEA! Another hit for Madeline Martin!

She was supposed to be his prize… But not all rewards are sweet…

Laird Brody Keith, Marischal of Scotland, has been asked by his future king to travel with William Wallace to Dunnottar Castle, where they will seize the castle back from the English. If he completes his mission, the castle, the land and all it holds, will be his. Brody is more than eager to sink his blade into the hearts of his enemies after the brutal murder of his sister and father. But what he doesn’t count on is finding an English lass in need of his protection…

Lady Guinevere has led a less than pleasant life in Scotland over the past year, and now she can either run for her life or accept the proposal of a man who should be her enemy. Survival bids her to acquiesce, but that doesn’t mean she has to play nice. Except, she’s coming to adore the people whom she’s always been told she should hate, and respect the man who risked his life for her.

Joined for a mutual purpose, Brody and Guinevere seem doomed from the start, but as time passes and their true enemies draw closer, they’ll form an alliance that not even the devil himself can break.

Brody pushed the door open the remainder of the way and came face to face with four Englishwomen. They huddled by the window, dressed in Sassenach gowns, hair once styled as though they were attending a great feast, jewels at their necks, and tears adorning each face except for one.

“Och, but I’ve died and gone to Hell,” he muttered.

Everyone knew Englishwomen were as shrewish as… well as, an Englishwoman, and as cold as dead fish.

All four stared at him, wide-eyed, mouths hung agape.

Much like fish, he thought.

They were pretty enough, especially the one with the long flowing blonde locks. Though it looked as though her locks had seen better days, perhaps not to have been torn from whatever fancy knot they’d been in.

“Who are ye?” he asked in not too kind a tone. He didn’t want any shrewish behavior, simply facts.

The blonde stepped forward, squared her shoulders and looked him straight in the eye with her piercing blue—nay more green than blue—eyes. She was the only one who didn’t cry. As though she’d been expecting him. The lass was beautiful, even if she was a harpy. Her bone structure was delicate, but her eyes sharp, and the way she frowned, well, he guessed her tongue to be just as barbed. The gown accentuated the curve of her hips and the swell of marginal breasts—he refused to call them the perfect size, for she was English, and he denied finding anything about her to be flawless.

“Who are you?” she retorted.

Och, a fiery little fish. “I asked ye first.”

“Well”—her gaze roved from the top of his head down to his boot tips and he felt more than a little assessed—“I think it is plain to see I outrank you, savage, so you must answer me first.”

At her bold words the ladies in her presence all paled, one covered her mouth, another pinched her own arms and the third nodded approval.

Brody chuckled, taking a menacing step forward. “Then I suppose we have found ourselves at an impasse, fishy, for I do believe I outrank ye.”

“Fishy? Ye insult me.” She shook her head and regarded him with something akin to disgust. “Impossible.”

Her revulsion almost had him checking himself. How odd, and why should he even wonder at her manners? She was English after all. Every woman he’d ever met up to this point had fallen at his feet. Brody was known for his charismatic tongue, his lovemaking abilities. Well, this fish wouldn’t know those things. And from the looks of her, she’d be too uptight to enjoy the pleasures he could have given her, if he wanted to, which he wouldn’t.

Brody puffed his chest and took several steps forward. “I assure ye, madam, given your current situation, anything is possible.”

Two of her ladies fainted dead away and the third stepped in front of the blonde, only to be shoved behind, a sharp word from the Grande Fishy’s mouth.

Then she turned back to him, pursing her lips as though she were contemplating a truce.

Before she could speak, he cut her off. “I dinna make deals, lass. If ye dinna believe me, then take a look out your window at the kirk yonder.”

“So you intend to kill us then?” Despite the stubborn set to her jaw and shoulders, her lower lip quivered.

Och, but why did that slight tremble have to tug at his heart? “We shall see what comes to pass.”

Amy Rose Bennett has always wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. An avid reader with a particular love for historical romance, it seemed only natural to write stories in her favorite genre. She has a passion for creating emotion-packed—and sometimes a little racy—stories set in the Georgian and Regency periods. Of course, her strong-willed heroines and rakish heroes always find their happily ever after.
Amy is happily married to her own Alpha male hero, has two beautiful daughters, and a rather loopy Rhodesian Ridgeback. She has been a speech pathologist for many years but is currently devoting her time to her one other true calling—writing romance.
