Please welcome today’s guest, Marie Harte!!

how to handle a heartbreaker

MBA&M: What or who inspired you to write Contemporary Romance?

I’m a huge reader, and I’ve always loved romances in general. I lean toward paranormal and futuristic when writing, but my muse doesn’t like me to get bored, so I switch genres to keep myself happy. I love the stories written by Jayne Ann Krentz and Nora Roberts in particular, because many of those revolve around family as well as romance. I write about families I’d like to be a part of.

MBA&M: Is there a story behind why you chose this particular setting, if so, please tell our readers?

My mother was living in Seattle at the time I wrote The Troublemaker Next Door (the first McCauley Brothers book), while I called Grovetown, Georgia (Augusta, GA) home. I loathe heat and humidity. Not saying Seattle’s not humid, but when I visited, it wasn’t hot. I loved the Pacific Northwest. I thought, if I could live anywhere, it would be the Pacific Northwest. And what better city than Seattle? Thus my story was set in the city I’d visit when seeing my mother.

MBA&M: Who would you say most influenced your writing and why?

The many, many authors I read growing up. From Madeline L’ Engle to Johanna Lindsey to Stephen King and Dean Koontz, David Eddings and Nora Roberts, and… There are so many more I can’t name without running out of room! I’m an avid reader, and I’ve always told myself stories. But I wanted to share those stories. I wanted to give other readers the same joy I received when reading my favorite authors. I lean toward romance, and though historicals aren’t my bag when writing, I’ll always credit Johanna Lindsey with getting me hooked. A Gentle Feuding was the very first romance I ever read, but certainly not the last.

MBA&M: What is the one thing that’s really makes you “cringe” where you hear or see it and why?

Poor spelling and grammar in a published book. Whether it be by traditional, small print or self-published authors, poor grammar is a no-no. It drives me nuts when authors don’t pay attention to their craft. There, their and they’re are three DIFFERENT WORDS. Note, this isn’t about stylistic choices, putting fragments or commas in where they sound right. I’m talking basic grammar. To is not a number—it’s a preposition! And yeah, I’m a grammar nazi. I admit it.

MBA&M: As a child, were you an avid reader, or did you start reading later in life?

I read out of the womb. LOL I’ve always been a big-time reader. Fantasies and horror when I was younger, then I gravitated to romances and westerns, science fiction, and then back to romance. Fiction first. I’m not a huge nonfiction reader, but I’ll read anything. Books are my life. 
Thanks so much for having me, My Book Addiction. I loved the questions.

Thanks for stopping by today~ We loved having you visit with us and our readers!!

how to handle a heartbreakerHE CAN’T GET HER OUT OF HIS HEAD
It’s lust at first sight when Brody Singer first lays eyes on Abby Dunn. The dark-haired beauty looks a lot like a woman he once knew, who died years ago. At first, Brody fears his attraction is a holdover from that secret crush, but Abby’s definitely different. She’s a lot shyer, a lot sexier, and despite her attempts to dissuade his interest, absolutely mesmerizing.

Abby isn’t having it. She’s still trying to put her last disastrous relationship behind her and overcome the flaws her ex wouldn’t let her forget. But somehow Brody isn’t getting the hint. It doesn’t help that when writing her steamy novels, she keeps casting Brody as the hero.
Brody is more than happy to serve as her muse and eager to help make sure her “research” is authentic. But when their research turns into something real…will she choose her own happily ever after?

Author: Kara Braden
Pub Date: July 1, 2014
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Years ago, former Marine Captain Cecily Knight fled her dark past and the nightmares forever haunting her nights. Alone in the remote Canadian wilderness, she survives day to day…until Ian Fairchild comes storming into her life and shatters her protective seclusion.
Aloof but intriguing, defensive but undeniable, Ian is everything Cecily shouldn’t want but can’t ignore. He watches her with shrewd blue eyes, as if determined to decipher her secrets…and for the first time in years, she finds herself coming alive beneath the hands of a man with too many scars to count.
As the hushed and harsh winter closes in around them, two lost souls find themselves on the precipice of a love that could save their lives…or destroy them forever.

Cecily shifted her weight, and Ian caught her sleeve, silently cursing the bulky jackets and gloves that separated them both. At the touch, she went still, saying, “Ian—“
“Cecily,” he interrupted quietly. He wanted to pull away her sunglasses, but he sensed that she needed that little artificial shield. If Ian pushed too hard, she would shut down completely, and he might never get another chance at her. Even this might be too much, but Ian had to try.
Lightly holding her sleeve, he raised his free hand and used his teeth to tug off the glove. Her head turned sharply to watch the path of the glove as Ian tossed it aside. Cold air bit at his fingers, but he didn’t care. He set his fingertips to her face, for an instant feeling the icy skin of her jaw before she flinched away.
“Cecily,” Ian repeated quietly, soothingly, and touched again. This time, she didn’t pull back. She parted her lips and inhaled quietly. The motion drew his gaze down, and he saw no reason at all not to chase that breath.
Tight with tension, her lips tasted of cold and snow. Subtle, burning point of contact connected them skin-to-skin—Ian’s fingertips on her face, his thumb on the thinner flesh over her cheekbone, their lips touching lightly The kiss was barely more than the air they shared for one breath, two. Her exhale shuddered against his mouth.

We are so excited to have with us today, Marie Harte and her TROUBLEMAKER NEXT DOOR series! So set back and enjoy your visit with our guest!

Drumroll, please…..

The Troublemaker Next Door by Marie Harte

MBA&M: Why write a tale of four bachelor men and the women who love them?

MH: I’m a sucker for hot, sexy brothers. A tight-knit family adds an element of loving strength that only makes the heroes that much more endearing. And girlfriends living next door to big brother Mike? LOVE that close connection.

MBA&M:  A little background on the McCauley family?

MH: Beth and James are the matriarch and patriarch of the tight-knit clan. And they’re not without their own foibles. Then, from first book to last, there’s:

Flynn—The dark haired lothario, middle brother and wise-ass. He’s a sexy plumber with a head for business and a heart—and body—the ladies love. He knows how to treat a woman, but he’s holding out for that special someone, to capture in a relationship what his parents have.

Brody Singer—The blond McCauley, Flynn’s “twin” and business partner. Unofficially adopted at a young age, he’s spent his life as part of the family. He’s sexy and charming, but he’s got some issues stemming from trauma in his past. Sometimes scars run deep that don’t show, and he’s got a bellyful.
Cameron—The white-collared youngest in a manly, blue-collar family. Cam’s a financial genius who likes the finer things in life and isn’t afraid to be in touch with his emotions. He’s the lone head of reason in a family of knuckle-dragging bozos, or so he likes to think. He loves his brothers, but they’re always on his case. And then there’s his father… Talk about a headache.

Mike—The oldest of the four, mature, rational, and built like a pro-wrestler who eats giants for breakfast. He works with his father in their construction business. He loved and lost and has the kid to prove it. His life is good. He has his family, his adorable son, and if he’s a little lonely, so what? McCauleys love only once, and he lost his soul mate long ago. He’s never getting married again. Now if he could just convince his scamming kid and nosy family of that fact…

MBA&M:  A list of five things readers may not know about Marie Harte?

1. I have big feet. Size 10, and I love them.

2. Nothing embarrasses me…except for that one time a few weeks ago when I blushed trying to find my son an athletic cup at Dick’s—of all places. (Irony, no?) The guy trying to help me out was so friggin’ good looking. I write erotic romance, for heaven’s sake! Yet my face was on fire. I’m still baffled…

3. I drink close to a pot of coffee daily.

4. I have read the dictionary for fun. (And sometimes still do.)

5. I know how to commit the perfect murder. Muhuhahaha

MBA&M:  Lessons learned as an author?

MH: I never give up. Ever. No matter how many times I’ve been told no, I just keep writing. Because I know that sometime, somehow, someone’s gotta say yes.

Thanks for having me!

You are so welcome! Thank you, Marie, for spending time with us and our readers!! And never, ever give up 🙂

“A book to savor.”-Kate Furnivall, author of The Russian Concubine

We all make mistakes. Some we can fix.
But what happens when we can’t?

Decades ago, as Nazi planes dominated the sky, Lily Verner made a terrible choice. She’s tried to forget, but now an unexpected event pulls her back to the 1940s British countryside. She finds herself remembering the brilliant colors of the silk she helped to weave at her family’s mill, the relentless pressure of the worsening war, and the kind of heartbreaking loss that stops time.

In this evocative novel of love and consequences, Lily finally confronts the disastrous decision that has haunted her all these years. The Last Telegram uncovers the surprising truth about how the stories we weave about our lives are threaded with truth, guilt, and forgiveness.

“Sparked my interest from the start…charming.”-Sharon Knoth, Between the Covers, Harbor Springs, MI

“This book will easily appeal to fans of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and I can see it quickly becoming a favorite of book clubs.”-Billie Bloebaum, Powell’s Books

shadows and strongholds

Many thanks for inviting me to be interviewed on your blog.

Thank you for spending with us and our readers today!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers who may not know you a little about yourself?

EC: I was born in an industrial mill town in the North of England where my family had lived for generations.  My father moved us with his job to Scotland, where I spent most of my childhood, and then we came south back to England and Nottingham.  I still live near Nottingham in a 200 year old beamed cottage on the outskirts of a small village.
I had always told myself stories right from being a little girl, but I didn’t begin writing them down until I was 15.  I fell in love with a tall, dark, handsome knight on a TV programme and that was it.  Through him I became hooked on the Middle Ages.  The more I researched, the more I became interested in telling stories set in that historical period.  I knew from being a teenager that I wanted to write historical fiction for a living, and that’s exactly what I set out to achieve.  In the meantime, while learning my craft and waiting for the call, I worked in supermarkets filling shelves to earn money, and eventually after serving an apprenticeship of more than a decade, I got the call, and had my novel The Wild Hunt accepted by a leading London literary agent and a major UK publishing house. I gave up my job stacking cans on shelves and became a full time author.

MBA&M: What do you feel the allure of historical fiction, Knights and England is to readers?

EC: There are many reasons; one size doesn’t fit all. I think there’s the whole chivalry thing and the ‘knight in shining armour’ sweeping a girl off her feet. I think it’s the romance of that time.  For many readers they might feel that it is part of their cultural roots too.  For others it’s that very potent feeling encapsulated by fairy tales and romances. Just imagine Carey Elwas saying ‘As you wish’ at the opening of the Princess Bride.  That’s the feeling. There is the nostalgia for a simpler time when an honourable man could swash-buckle his way out of danger, the bad guys get their come uppance and the lady be swept into the arms of a strong man who would keep her safe.
I think on the more serious side there is also a strong curiosity about the period.  People are genuinely interested in knowing more about it, told through the medium of a good story.  I try to stay as true to the life and times as I can.  With me a reader won’t get the Disney version; they will get the reality, but even so there is adventure, romance, and plenty to cheer about.  I write about real people and their dilemmas and conflicts.

MBA&M: What is your biggest challenge in writing historical fiction?

EC: I guess it’s being a bridge between the mindset and expectations of readers now and the mindset and expectations of the people I write about.  For example, marriages where the aristocracy were concerned were often arranged and might involve girls as young as 12 and boys of 14.  This seems distasteful to us now, but back then it was a cultural norm. The bride or groom was viewed as being capable of making adult decisions and entering the adult world at that stage.  It’s sometimes a challenge to walk the line of being true to the period and keeping modern readers on board.

shadows and strongholdsMBA&M: In “Shadows and Strongholds” Brunin  Fitzawarin is a young man finding his way, what was the inspiration behind writing this story?

I had already written about what happened to Brunin’s son, Fulke, in another novel which Sourcebooks will be publishing in the autumn and titled THE OUTLAW KNIGHT. I became very interested while writing that (originally for the UK) in the story of Fulke’s parents.  The tale of the FitzWarin family adventures was written down in a 13th century chronicle called Fouke Fitzwaryn, which can be described as a true family history with embellishments. I was intrigued by a passage that spoke about Hawise (heroine of the novel) accusing Brunin of cowardice because her father was being battered to a pulp in battle outside the castle walls and Brunin had not gone out to do anything about it (he was 18 at the time). Goaded by her taunts, Brunin grabbed a rusty axe, mounted an old nag and galloped out to single-handedly save the day.  I thought this was a fantastic incident and begin thinking about how I could craft a story round it based on the known facts and my own imagination. Hawise was obviously a strong and confident young lady.  With Brunin there was plainly more than met the eye. What were the conflicts? What had happened before this incident? What happened after when Brunin and Hawise met up again?  SHADOWS AND STRONGHOLDS was the result of those pondering and much more.

MBA&M: Who was you favorite secondary character to write about and why?We talk of heroes and heroines, but forget the secondary characters who carry the story alone.

EC: That’s a difficult one; I have at least three for the role.  I think Hawise’s father Joscelin, and his wife Sybilla would be favourites in terms of I would love to go back and meet them and talk to them.  But probably the most important person in terms of carrying the story along  even though she is a difficult personality, is Marion de la Brewere. She is an orphaned heiress who is brought up as a companion to Hawise and her sister. Marion is pretty and dainty with exquisite manners and a head filled with chivalric ideals.  But life isn’t always like that and as she and Hawise grow up, companionship becomes rivalry and problems arise, not  least when Marion casts her eyes over Brunin.

MBA&M: What is next for you, if you can tell us this?

EC: Most certainly!  Sourcebooks will be publishing the sequel to SHADOWS AND STRONGHOLDS, titled THE OUTLAW KNIGHT in the Autumn.  Meanwhile in the UK in June, the first novel of my Alienor of Aquitaine trilogy will be coming out – THE SUMMER QUEEN. I expect it will be coming to the USA at some point in the near future, so check the website for forthcoming details.  I’m currently writing book 2 of the trilogy THE WINTER CROWN.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers how to connect to you and where to find “Shadows and Strongholds”?

EC: Readers can drop by my website at www.elizabethchadwick.com  There is plenty of extra information there about my books and the history of the period, and also ways of contacting me including Facebook and Twitter.

Synopsis(From the author’s website)

A Mediaeval tale of pride and strife, of coming of age in a world where chivalry is a luxury seldom afforded, especially by men of power. An awkward misfit, loathed by his powerful and autocratic grandmother, nine-year-old Fulke FitzWarin leaves his family to be fostered in the household of Joscelin de Dinan, Lord of Ludlow. Here Fulke will learn knightly arts, but before he can succeed, he must overcome the deep-seated doubts that hold him back. Hawise FitzWarin is Joscelin’s youngest daughter and she befriends Fulke. As they grow up, an implacable enemy threatens Ludlow and as the pressure mounts, their friendship changes until one fateful day they find themselves staring at each other across a divide. Not only does Fulke have to overcome the shadows of his childhood, he faces a Welsh threat to his family’s lands, and the way he feels about Hawise endangers all his hard won confidence. As the menace to Ludlow intensifies, he must either confront the future head on, or fail on all counts, not knowing if Hawise stands with or against him.

This novel is the prequel to Lords of the White Castle.

“MY THOUGHTS” on this title!

We hope you have enjoyed our guest today and will spread the word!

Checkmate My Lord - FINAL-300

Tracey Devlyn_088HighCloseCropMBA&M: Good morning, Tracey, and welcome to My Book  Addiction and More. Now, tell our readers a little about yourself?

TRACEY DEVLYN: Thanks so much for having me on My Book Addiction and More. I look forward to chatting with everyone!

I write historical romantic thrillers and my debut novel, A Lady’s Revenge, released last year. There are two other novels in the Nexus romantic spy series—Checkmate, My Lord hit stores this month and A Lady’s Secret Weapon makes an appearance in October.

As for me, I grew up in a small town in southern Illinois, but have been living in the Chicago area for nearly two decades. I’m married to a wonderful loving and supportive husband and we adopted an annoying, but sweet-hearted, red Dobe two years ago.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write historical romance with a bit of danger?

TRACEY: I’ve been a big fan of historical romance since I picked up The Raven and The Rose by Virgina Henley. Somewhere along the way, I started wanting to mesh the rough, dangerous edge of Medievals with the light, humorous Regencies. After reading several romantic suspense/thrillers, I got the urge to add a dash of death and dismemberment. J

MBA&M: What do you feel the allure of historical romance is to readers today?

TRACEY: Likely pure escapism. The Regency era is similar enough to modern times that readers can identify with the period, but different enough for readers to yearn for a whirl around the ballroom in a slightly aloof, gorgeous, insanely wealthy earl’s arms.

MBA&M: What was the inspiration for “Checkmate, My Lord”?Checkmate My Lord - FINAL-300

TRACEY: Readers met Lord Somerton, Sebastian Danvers, in my debut novel, A Lady’s Revenge. I knew I wanted to move Sebastian’s story to the country and then the idea of his beautiful neighbor spying on him—England’s greatest spymaster—came to mind.

MBA&M:  What was your favorite scene to write?

TRACEY: One of my favorite scenes took place outside the churchyard, near a privy (outhouse). Readers will see Catherine’s motherly instincts kick in, Sebastian’s is in full spymaster mode, and one of the villain’s makes an appearance. It’s a suspenseful and oddly endearing scene.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite secondary character, and will they have a story of their own one day?

TRACEY: My favorite secondary character was seven-year-old Sophie Ashcroft. She’s a horse-mad, castle-building, full-of-life girl who has no concept of personal space. More than likely, she won’t have her own story, but she does make an appearance in A Lady’s Secret Weapon, where she commences torturing Ethan deBeau. You can catch a glimpse of her here. It’s her first love letter to her hero, Teddy.

MBA&M: What do you feel is the most important quality of an author?

TRACEY: Determination. It’s a quality that helped me get published, build professional relationship, and connect with readers. There are SO many more qualities that complement and bolster an author’s determination, though.

MBA&M: With the cyber world today so vast and you being a newer author, do you feel,it is easier for readers to connect to authors or harder than years ago? And, Do authors turn off their inner feelings to connect to so large an audience, with little privacy today?

TRACEY: Great questions. I think it’s TONS easier to connect with readers. By and large, writers are introverts. So, they might be a little shy in person. Social media provides introverts a means of connecting with readers that is comfortable. Plus, social media allows authors to touch readers in other countries. I’ve had Facebook conversations with a reader from Indonesia. Without the Internet, I would be connecting with a much smaller group of readers.

Privacy is a concern for everyone Internet—not just authors. Speaking from personal experience, I’m a fairly private person by nature, so much of my personal life remains behind closed doors. However, when it comes to my books/characters/writing career, or authors I’ve read and love, I’ll chat you up all day long!

MBA&M:  What three words would you chose to describe “Checkmate, My Lord”?

TRACEY: Romantic. Thrilling. Endearing.

Checkmate My Lord - FINAL-300MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to connect to you and where they may find “Checkmate, My Lord”?

TRACEY: Readers can find me lots of places!

Olivia Cunning Quick Facts
Despite the encouragement of her English teachers to pursue writing, she majored in biology in college.

Olivia earned a master’s degree in Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine. After her beloved grandfather died of a heart attack, she aspired to find the cure for atherosclerosis, but found biomedical research tedious and frustrating, so switched to teaching.

Olivia loves to attend metal concerts. She regularly embarrasses her college-aged son by headbanging in public and gets accused of not “looking like” a metal head.

Olivia finished writing her first contemporary series romance novel at age 19. It remains unpublished.

Olivia has always had a vivid imagination. At age three, she had seven imaginary friends and still remembers the stories she made up about them. One, named Splinter, was a giant talking skunk.

Olivia is an army brat. She has lived all over the United States and in Germany. She tends to move every three to five years. Her most recent move to Galveston, Texas will hopefully be her last.

Sinners on Tour, Book 4 - Hot TicketFourth in Olivia Cunning’s hard-rockin’ erotic romance series, Hot Ticket delves into the oh-so-skilled sensuality of Sinners’ enigmatic bass guitarist, Jace Seymore.

When Jace walked through the doors of Aggie’s dungeon, the last thing he expected was to find self-forgiveness and the love of a remarkable woman. But when a terrible accident sidelines Jace during the band’s tour, the burdensome chains of his past wrap ferociously around his heart. Determined to crack through Jace’s armored shell, Aggie must go beyond her usual methods to mend his heart to love again.

Cheryl Brooks PhotoScenes that make me tingle

From the time I started reading until I began writing books of my own, certain scenes have sent a rush of tingles racing over my skin. I can’t explain why they affect me that way. I only know that they do—and they do it every time I read them.

RogueOne such scene is this excerpt from Rogue, book 3 of the Cat Star Chronicles series. Music teacher Kyra Aramis has been hired by a Darconian queen to teach her daughter to play the piano. Since the natives are reptiles, Kyra doesn’t expect to find love on that desert world, but when the queen assigns Tycharian Vladatonsk, a handsome Zetithian slave, to be Kyra’s personal attendant, love blossoms.

In this scene, Kyra and Tychar are already lovers, and the antique Steinway the queen has provided for Kyra’s use has finally reached out to her—on a rather mystical level…

That night, I awoke from a dream with something calling out to me, beckoning me to come to it. Unable to resist, I rose from my bed, leaving Tychar sleeping in the moonlight. The night air was chilly, and I slipped into a robe as I stole silently into the music room.

The three Darconian moons were conjoined—surely a good omen—and shone down on the planet below with a brightness that cast shadows as though daylight had come early. The piano sat silently on the dais, but I could feel the pull and knew that this was what had been calling to me. The ancient instrument was ready at last; to tell me its story and to share its secrets.

Sitting down on the bench, I began to play one of the Zetithian love songs at first, but then the melody changed, seemingly of its own accord, to become something different, yet similar, as though inspired by the original song. I’d never played like that before, and the music seemed to come through my hands straight from my heart. It was my love song to Tychar: how I felt when I was in his arms, how I knew he was my one, true love—forever and always.

A fleeting thought told me that I should be recording this so I wouldn’t forget it, but I knew in my heart that it would be indelibly placed in my memory. No, I wouldn’t forget it, and the melody would grow with each day I spent with him, for this was his song: the expression of my feelings for him. I had never been inspired before, but I certainly was now.

Something moved within the shadows, taking the shape of the one I was playing for; the one I loved. Moving nearer, he placed his hands on my shoulders, and their warm strength inspired me even further. The melody changed again, becoming two songs, somehow blended into one. Was this how the great composers had worked their magic? Had they had such a love to inspire them, to carry them far beyond their usual talents? How else could one explain why the occasional mediocre composer could suddenly bring forth a piece of music that survived the ages?

I played on, letting his love be my guide, and when the song reached its conclusion at last, I was reluctant to break the spell and waited silently for him to speak.

“That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard,” he said gently. “It reminds me of you.”

“No,” I whispered. “It is my love for you, nothing more.”

His grasp on my shoulders tightened. “Do you truly love me that much?”

“I do,” I replied. Taking his hand from my shoulder, I kissed it softly. “Can you doubt it?”

“No,” he said in a somber tone. “My vision was a true one. You are here, we are lovers, and my life will never be the same.”

“Or mine.”

WildcatAnd now for a sneak peek at the latest installment in the Cat Star Chronicles, Wildcat!

Horse breeder Sara Shield first met her new Zetithian neighbor, Jerden Morokovitz, when he came cantering up on her missing stallion—no bridle, no saddle, no clothes. He promises to return the horse to Sara’s farm, but another neighbor, Nate Wolmack, has come to call…

A chill ran down Sara’s spine as a booted footstep behind her heralded more bad news, and she suppressed a groan.

“I know the feeling,” Nate said. “You’re a hard woman to get close to, Sara.”

Mentally counting to three before she turned to face him, Sara did her best to maintain a neutral expression. Nate always rubbed her the wrong way, and she didn’t appreciate him sneaking up behind her. At least she wasn’t alone.

Reutal was well aware that Sara didn’t particularly care for Nate and seldom missed the opportunity to make a quip at his expense. This time, Nate had left himself wide open. “Must be your aura keeping her away, Nate. But then, I’ve noticed that flies don’t like you, either.”

Nate shot a disdainful glance at the Norludian before directing his gaze at Sara. “You need to teach your hired help to watch his mouth.”

It was quick, but Sara saw Reutal’s tongue dart out in the silent, Norludian version of  f*** you.

Sara faked a cough, covering her smile with her hand. “Haven’t met anyone yet who could control a Norludian’s mouth. I gave up a long time ago.” It wasn’t true, of course, but Nate didn’t have to know that. She’d made it very clear at the outset that while Reutal could talk all he liked, she was the boss, and therefore off-limits in terms of romantic liaisons.

“Any luck finding your stallion?” Nate asked. “Damn shame him running off like that.”

Sara wasn’t fooled. She knew Nate was fishing for her to use his stud, Kraken, though why she would want to breed her mares to an unapproved stallion when Danuban was around defied explanation.

“Oh, haven’t you heard?” she said blithely. “He wound up on Jerden Morokovitz’s place. He’ll be bringing him over soon.” Or so she hoped.

Nate’s steely blue eyes narrowed with suspicion. “Is that so?”

Sara nodded. “Yes, and you should see that man ride,” she said, not bothering to hide her admiration. “He doesn’t even need a bridle.”

Nate’s brow rose, albeit very slightly. “Never knew Zetithians were any good with horses. Best I can tell, all they do is steal women from other men.”

Sara was surprised at just how much this comment galled her. “Hadn’t noticed that.” Her shrug was carefully indifferent. “But then, I don’t get out much.”

“Had one stolen from you, Nate?” Reutal’s tone was all innocence, but his bulbous eyes were aglow with mischief.

Sara doubted it. Tall, blond, and ruggedly handsome, Nate was one of the region’s more eligible bachelors. What Sara couldn’t understand was why he kept dogging her—if this was romance, she wanted no part of it. His attentions were too… calculated, and like most men, he made her feel uneasy. Since she’d never been pursued for herself alone, she could only conclude that he wanted something from her.

Other than a trace of irritation marring his chiseled features, Nate gave no indication that he’d even heard Reutal, addressing Sara instead. “I’ve noticed that about you, Sara. Nimbaza isn’t exactly the playground of the galaxy, but there are some nice restaurants and clubs. Places a man can take a woman that are a little more”—his eyes swept the interior of the barn, ending with a sidelong glance at Reutal—“private.”

Oh, God. Is he asking me for a date? “I’m sure there are, but I don’t have the time for it. Too much work to do.”

He took a step closer. “You know what they say about all work and no play, don’t you?”

Though a tremor of fear ran up her spine, Sara lifted her chin slightly. “I don’t put much stock in that crap.”

Nate’s retort was cut off by the sound of approaching hoofbeats.

Sara glanced up as Jerden entered the barn astride Danuban, the pair of them seeming more like a centaur than two separate beings. The black leopard stalked alongside them like a warlock’s familiar. As they came to a halt a few paces away, tingles raced over Sara’s skin and a hush fell over the barn. Even the birds nesting in the rafters ceased their incessant chirping.

Jerden’s eyes met hers with an impact Sara could almost feel.

“I brought your horse back.”

What about you? Are there any scenes from books or movies that make you tingle all over?
