Good morning Dorothy and welcome back to My Book Addiction and More today…
MBA&M:Dorothy, tell our readers a little about yourself, for those who do not know you as of yet?

DOROTHY:  I’m a wife, sister, daughter, friend, human mom to 2 golden retrievers. I love the history that I weave into my novels, love traveling to the places that wind up in my stories. Before I began writing inspirational fiction for adults, I published more than a dozen novels for preteens and young adults. I’ve lived all over the country, but mostly in Texas, which I consider home. I’ve just taken up the piano again after a lifetime away from it. I have a lot of make up work to do. But I love it.

MBA&M:  What if anything was your inspiration behind writing “Beauty For Ashes”?

DOROTHY: I’ve always been interested in the dynamics of families, and that interest finds its way into many of my novels. My books usually are concerned with matters of family, friends and faith.  Even though they are set in the South of the 19th century, I hope they reflect the concerns of  women today.  The title comes from a verse in the book of Isaiah in which God promises to give us beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning.  It was a perfect fit for my protagonist, Carrie Daly, who has seen a lot of grief in her life and desperately needs that grace.

MBA&M:  How do you feel your writing has grown through the years?

DOROTHY: I hope I’m more observant of human behavior and emotion than I was in my 20’s. I think it’s sometimes necessary to mature before one can tell certain stories. I hope I continue to grow.

MBA&M: Can you tell our readers how many books will be in the “Hickory Ridge” series and any tidbits into the next installment?

DOROTHY:  Sure. There will be a total of three. I’ve just finished the third one, called EVERY PERFECT GIFT.  If you’ve read the first book, BEYOND ALL MEASURE, you’ll remember Sophie, the little mixed race girl who lives at the Hickory Ridge orphanage, until Wyatt and Ada Caldwell take her to live with them in Texas.  In the third book, she is all grown up, a newspaper woman who returns to Hickory Ridge to revive the town paper, the Gazette. Her first interview is with Ethan Heyward,  the handsome architect and manager of Blue Smoke, the luxury resort that’s opening atop Hickory Ridge.  The story is about the secrets they keep from each other and how they find their way to each other. I loved writing it.

MBA&M: How much research was involved in writing “Beauty For Ashes”?

DOROTHY:  Since it’s the second Hickory Ridge book, there was less research than for the first one. Most of it revolved around horse racing and training thoroughbreds. I learned a lot about thoroughbreds, the beginnings of the Kentucky Derby, how a colt is trained for the track.

MBA&M:  What do you hope to accomplish in writing your Southern Historical Romance?

DOROTHY: I was born and raised in the South. Much of its history is lost or buried or distorted. I hope to shed some light on the amazing, fascinating, maddening, tortured, graceful past and at the same time, tell an entertaining and uplifting story.

MBA&M:  Now, Dorothy, tell our readers where to find you and where they can purchase “Beauty For Ashes”?

(from the author’s website)

She’s a beautiful young widow. He’s a charming Charlestonian with a taste for adventure. Both need a place to call home.

For Carrie Daly, life seems to consist mostly of mourning and ashes. Widowed when her young husband died at the battle of Shiloh, Carrie has spent the intervening years living quietly on her family’s farm with Henry, her older brother. But then Henry marries Mary Stanhope, a difficult widow with two rowdy sons in tow. Feeling that there is no longer a place for her on the farm, Carrie moves to the genteel but shabby Verandah Ladies Hotel and takes a job at Nate Chastain’s book shop, intending to make a new life for herself.

But a chance meeting with Griff Rutledge, a newcomer to Hickory Ridge, changes everything.

It will take a leap of faith on both their parts to redeem the hurts of the past and claim God’s promise of beauty for ashes.
