Interview Questions A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris

What was your inspiration for A Secret to Die For?

As with a lot of my stories, my inspiration started off with a random idea for a heroine, who quickly became Grace Callahan. She was a psychologist, but more than that, she had her own personal giants that she was facing in her life. After I began to flesh out her character, I brought in the hero who was also dealing with loss, and the ideas for the plot line started to come together—both for them personally and for the greater danger they were facing.

What type of research was required for writing your new book?

I ended up having to do a lot of research, particularly on the nation’s power grid, survivalists and preppers, and hackers. Next to romantic suspense, my favorite genre is apocalyptic-type stories where someone has to save the world. So while there is no monstrous tidal waves, falling meteors, and definitely no zombies, the research was a lot of fun. In fact, I tend to get a bit too caught up in my research sometimes.  Detective Nate Quinn strugles with PTSD.

How did his disorder come in to play in A Secret to Die For?

At the beginning of the story, Nate has just gone back to work after an explosion took the lives of his partner and several co-workers. And while he wants to be back on the job—even needs to be back—he’s not a hundred percent sure he’s ready. He encounters a number of triggers and begins to realize how his life has changed. He also has to deal with the guilt of being a survivor, which is something very real for those who have gone through trauma and lost people they care about. Grace becomes the perfect person to help him heal, which I love watching play out in the book. Was there any part of this book that really surprised you once you began writing it? As with a lot of the stories I write, I’m usually not sure who the villain is until the end of the book, and that was definitely true for this story. On the positive side, I’ve decided that if I’m not sure until the end who did it, then hopefully the reader won’t figure it out either!

You have written more than thirty books, including Vendetta, Missing, Pursued, and Vanishing Point. Have you always written in the suspense genre or do you also write other genres?

I started out writing romance novels, but they always had a string of mystery in them. I just couldn’t get away from that thread in my stories. So it’s safe to say that I really love writing suspense and can’t imagine writing anything else!

For more information, visit www.RevellBooks.com.

What do you hope readers gain from reading your book?

While I definitely want my readers to be entertained—and maybe a bit (okay, a lot) scared—while reading my books, I also want them to discover how God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things for him. People like you and me have the chance to allow God to use us in spite of all our fears and insecurities. I see the spiritual thread in my stories as a part of my characters’ reactions to life. How they react and deal with things on a spiritual level is crucial. Just like in my own life, I don’t want my faith to be simply tacked on but an intricate part of who I am.

What’s next on your writing to-do list?

Next up is another stand-alone novel for Revell that I’m super excited about as it takes my hero on a treacherous path I’ve never taken them on before. (Sorry, no spoilers!)

How can readers connect with you?

I’d love to hear from you!

****My thoughts ****
The Exe’s Revenge  by Jo Jakeman is an interesting debut thriller.  “Originally titled Sticks and Stones”. Ruby, Imogen,  and Naomi
A wickedly dark debut thriller about three women….
Ruby, Imogen,  and Naomi, all three have been involved with the same man,  Phillip Rochester, who was abusive and controlling. The one thing all three have in common, they revenge against him.
A dark and emotional thriller that deals with sensitive issues, domestic violence,  abuse,  secrets, some dark humor, wit, sadness,  and the coming together of three women who become free from their abusive, policeman husband/boyfriend and find a solidarity. Think of the “9 to 5: movie years ago. Traumatic and compelling.  “The Exe’s Revenge” may not compel to all readers,  I found it to be an interesting story, usual and a bit unpredictable.  #NetGalley, #TheExesRevenge, #JoJakeman,

EXCERPT 1, from Chapter One

February 1569

She charged into battle with the zeal of one who demands justice and will accept nothing less.

They had been riding all afternoon on the old Stanegate Highway, from Carlisle east toward Naworth Castle, where the rebels were mustering. There were five of them besides herself—two friends she had persuaded to join the fight and three others they had picked up along the way. It was a frigid February day, piercing deep to the bone with an unforgiving cold. When the beacons came into view at last, their flames a call to battle, she glanced at her companions triumphantly.

They scarcely had time to give their mounts a rest and let them graze and drink before the order was given to move out. She kept the bright red banners, adorned with white gryphons, in view and hoped her friends remained close by. There were infantry and horsemen as far as the eye could see, though they looked like a ragtag lot. Nobody in mail or armor. She rode on, keeping her eyes on the banners ahead, from time to time searching the crowd for her friends. But to no avail.

The queen’s forces assembled in the distance. It was almost as though they wished to sneak past. No judge of the difference between brilliant or foolhardy military strategies, she accepted chasing after an enemy who clearly did not wish to engage as part of a plan. Lord Dacre was their commander, and in her vengeful fervor she would follow him anywhere. On his orders, they gave chase until finally, circling ahead of the queen’s southern army, they lay in wait near the Gelt River where Hell Beck joined it.

In mere moments, her belief that justice would triumph shattered.

Hundreds of horsemen at the rear of the queen’s army began a vicious attack, pushing Dacre’s troops out onto the heath. She dismounted, electing to take her chances as one of the infantry. Within minutes, mayhem ensued. Mounted troops wielding lances made short work of the men, most of whom carried nothing more than dirks. A lucky few were armed with pikes. Arrows flew, and she ducked every time she saw a bow raised. But before long, the smoke from the harquebuses was so thick, she could see nothing, nor could she hear anything other than the screams and shouts of both the rebels and queen’s men. What a fool she’d been, expecting an orderly military action. She’d gotten chaos instead.

Their footmen broke through and tore into the rebels with pikes, and cavalrymen attacked with lances. She looked on helplessly as men around her were run through with rapiers or felled by blows to the head. Springing to her feet, she lunged onward, too fired up—and apparently too brainless—to sense the inevitability of the outcome, or even the extreme peril she was in.

Having removed her travel cloak, she shivered in her thin shirt and doublet. Neither did much to ward off the bone-chilling cold. Ahead, mist rose from the river like a curtain of gauze. She tripped over more than one lifeless body, both human and beast. Shouts of command and cries of the wounded were muted in the dense air. Clutching the handle of a dirk that had belonged to her brother, she longed for the chance to put it to use. If she could surprise one of the queen’s men, catch one of them unawares…a life for her brother’s life. That was all she wanted.

The wind rose, clearing the smoke. Glimpsing an opening, she plunged forward, straight toward a giant of a man wearing the queen’s badge and without a weapon to hand. She was ready for him. With an upward thrust, she aimed for his heart. But with one step back, he was out of reach. She was stabbing at the air. He brought a beefy fist down on her wrist and knocked the dirk out of her hand, then gave a low chuckle before grasping the back of her doublet and hoisting her a few feet off the ground. “God’s wounds, you’re no bigger than a wench,” he said.

“Because she is a wench, fool,” a second man said, stepping out of the darkness. This one wore a short beard. Or perhaps it was only stubble—she couldn’t tell in the dark. He reached down and picked up her dagger.

“We could have some fun with her, I’ll warrant,” the giant said. He still held her aloft as though she weighed no more than a cloth doll. While he mulled it over, she kicked him in the groin, as hard as she could while swaying in the air. He doubled over and dropped her, and the second man laughed. She leaped to her feet and ran.

Unfortunately, she managed only a few steps before an arm hard as stone and every bit as unyielding wrapped around her. It was the bearded man. The terror, the panic, all the unacknowledged dread she’d been holding inside now burst out in one long, agonized plea. “Let me go, I beg you. I have a family to look after.”

He snorted. “A bit late to think of that, is it not?” He ordered the giant to bind her hands behind her back, and they dragged her, one on each side, to an area where prisoners were being held, and dumped her to the cold ground. But not before they’d spotted the scabbard tied at her waist and relieved her of it.

The next day they marched to Carlisle Castle, and she, Madeleine Vernon, daughter of Philip and Blanche Vernon of Carlisle and sister of the executed Robert, found herself thrown into a dank, stinking cell, fit only for murderers, thieves, and rebels.

My thoughts

Mistress Spy by Pamela Mingle is a fast paced, page turning Elizabethan novel. When a line between prisoner and capitor become blurred, all bets are off.
With deceit, betrayal, and desire a perilous mix is created. Add in treason, danger, surprises, you have a definite page turner. Well crafted and well written with charming and engaging characters. The plot is intriguing, unpredictable and captivating. Twists and turns abound in MISTRESS SPY. What a brilliant and exciting story! Excerpt

Excerpt #2

Andy lunged into the shed and yanked the line on the detonator caps. Sparks hissed as the charges caught. He didn’t have time to ensure the countdown started. He jumped onto the snowmobile and gunned the engine, swerving the high-powered vehicle around.

They needed as many objects between them and the shooters as possible.

A figure leaned over the railing.

Andy squeezed the accelerator and they shot forward. He swerved. Shots rang out, hitting the snow, sending up plumes of flurries.

Five…

He cut behind the house.

Glass shattered and a shot hit the plastic casing on the front of the snowmobile.

Four…

Carol screamed.

Andy banked, turning so fast he felt Carol nearly whip off the side.

Three…

A blast so loud the snow seemed to ripple from the concussion wave rang out. Andy lurched forward and Carol’s yell was lost amid the sound of the explosion.

They tumbled sideways off the snowmobile.

The timing was off.

Debris hit the snow, raining down.

Andy rolled, pinning Carol under him, protecting her with his body. She sobbed into the material of his jacket.

“Carol.” He barked her name, killing all kindness inside of him. It was natural to panic. Any normal person would, but they didn’t have that luxury. “Pull it together. We have to go.”

He pushed up, grabbing hold of her arm and hauling her up with him. He couldn’t coddle her, couldn’t spend precious moments assuring her it would be okay. They needed to get clear, in case there were satellites aimed at them or if the two shooters weren’t dead. Chances were, if these people were good enough to find them, they were good enough to survive the traps.

Andy glanced back. The front right side of the house was blown out and flames licked the sky. With any luck, everything they’d brought with them would burn with the follow-up charges.

“Come on. Now.” He didn’t see movement from the two shooters, but he also didn’t see any bodies.

Unless he saw them dead, he’d assume they were alive.

He wanted to go back, finish the job, but that would mean leaving Carol vulnerable. He couldn’t do that.

Andy picked her up and carried her to the snowmobile. He righted it, put her on the back, and climbed on. He’d hoped they would have more time here, but they didn’t.

He gunned the engine and they shot forward, sailing through the trees.

Andy headed south until he spied a landmark, an almost perfectly smooth, sphere-shaped boulder. He pulled the snowmobile into the shelter created by the huge rock resting against the side of the mountain, and killed the engine.

“W-why are we stopping?” Carol’s voice trembled.

“I need you to go through your pockets. Take everything out, understand?”

“Why?”

“Carol—”

“Fine,” she snapped.

Andy edged out, almost into the open, closed his eyes and listened.

Carol sniffled and wrestled with her coat, all the layers of fluffy down.

“Shh,” he said quietly.

Was anyone following them?

My Thoughts

Assassin Games by Sidney Bristol is an exciting Crime Thriller. #2 in “Tarnished Heroes”, see “Spy Game”, but can be read as a stand alone.

This is the story of Anderson Gratney and Carol Sark both work with the CIA in different roles. There is a mole, a traitor, a murderer,  danger, an assassin with plenty of twists and turns and edge of your seat action. Action paced, fast paced with engaging and realistic characters and an intriguing and captivating storyline.  The storyline flows seamlessly and effortlessly.  It is also unpredictable and compelling. A fantastic Crime Thriller with a few surprises.  A must read. While, this is my first time reading Sidney Brisyol I intend to pick up “Spy Game” and continue to follow her stories. “I voluntarily received a complimentary copy, however,  these are my honest opinions. Excerpt:

During the several hours we were all downstairs, I found myself watching him closely and making a mental list of everything I learned. One discovery I made was that he likes his scotch with only one ice cube, not the three or four that usually fill a glass. He also seemed to enjoy the mini crab cakes, if the amount of them he ate was any indication. Having stolen several of them myself, I would have to agree they were delicious. The house has an amazing restaurant-style kitchen and a chef that caters to any of the client’s tastes, no matter the time day or night.
The man also seemed to only be on friendly terms with the short, pudgy man who had accompanied him. The rest of the gentlemen, like the girls, he mostly ignored, though several of the gentlemen clearly wanted to impress him. The man’s face had been a cold mask of indifference the entire evening.
I had briefly wondered if he was married, not that it stopped any of his companions from enjoying themselves. When I handed him his drink, I noticed a lack of a wedding band. This could mean nothing, since not all men wear bands, but if my husband looked like this man, he would be wearing a huge one—telling the world he is taken. Maybe he’s gay?
This is the first time that any man has requested me, and I never imagined it would be this man stepping through the door. I’m surprised. The entire time we were downstairs the only words he said to me was a polite “thank you” as I served him. He barely even looked at me. Why did he request a room with me?
If I’m honest with myself, I’m a little—a lot—relieved. He’s at least not old, fat, or a disgusting combination of the two. And I admit, begrudgingly, that he is sinfully attractive. The thought of this man touching, kissing, and penetrating me doesn’t make my skin crawl or my stomach bubble with acid. It scares me, but maybe if I close my eyes, I can pretend we met during a night of clubbing and this is all my own choice. Or maybe not.

My thoughts:

Uncovering Lily by Rene Webb is a steamy Erotic Suspense Romance. MacKay International #1. Meet,  Xavier Finch, Businessman and Lily MacKay, a virgin who  has been drugged, kidnapped in Paris and imprisoned in a Hong Kong brothel, where Xavier recognizes her.

Very steamy passion with danger, mystery, suspense,  plenty of romance and more. The characters are charming,  engaging and realistic.  The storyline is unpredictable and intriguing.  Kept me captivated from the first few pages to the last. Ms. Webb did an excellent job of convening the slave trade/traffic to her readers. Was not just an erotic romance, to me. Rene Webb is a new author to me. While, Erotic Romance is not my favorite genre, UNCOVERING LILY was interesting,  and an enjoyable read. I would recommend reading this book for fans of Erotic Romance,  and steamy romance.

I received a complimentary copy, however,  all opinions are my own.

MY THOUGHTS:

Beloved Beast by Karyn Gerard is a fantastic read with a twist. Book 2 in her exciting “The Ravenswood Chronicle”, it can be read as a read alone. See, ” Beloved Monster”, while not necessary to enjoy book 2, book 1 gives the details of the hero’s past. This is set forty-eight years after book 1.

This is a unique twist on Historical romance, with paranormal romance elements. In “Beloved Beast”, the debauched Viscount Ravenswood has a new name, Luke Newman. He works with MI6, and his nephew, Fred Parker, is a SIS officer. Luke is now a widower, and lonely, so working with his nephew helps abate his loneliness. He helps to relocate compromised or returning spies from war torn Europe. Luke is scarred from his 1885 carriage accident, which also gave him heightened senses, made him cool to the touch, he has a grayish coloring, disfigured, increased strength, heightened libido and maybe immortality. Picture a Mary Shelley experiment type thing, without the monster.

Gilliam Browning, seduced a German business man for information on the “Enigma” machine, then she returns to England and is suddenly in grave danger from a German spy. Enter…Luke to keep her safe. Now both are in grave danger.

“Beloved Beast” is a mixture of Gothic horror, World War II romantic suspense, mystery and an outstanding spy novel. Whew, what an exciting tale of second chances, romance and an unabiding love! Ms. Gerard pulled this incredible, dramatic story off with style, brilliant writing and an uncanny style that grips and captures the reader’s heart. I was held spellbound! “Beloved Beast”, is one such story, that I found I could not stop reading until the last page. This story lingers long after the last page. Highly recommended for fans of historical romance with paranormal twists, powerful plot plots, vivid details, and WWII fans. *There is explicit sensual scenes, however, they are done with taste and not offensive, to this reader, however, this is NOT an erotic story.*
A very enjoyable and satisfying read with twists, romance, the feel of historical suspense and the hope of finding happiness, love and a HEA. Awesome read! Karyn Gerard has written a story with her usual aplomb, her eye for detail and her desire to give readers a fulfilling story that will keep them turning pages in this thrilling story of spies, romance, danger and love. Magnificent!! A must read!

Would you break the law for someone you love?

MEET THE AUTHOR THE WHO’S WHO OF THE AMERICAN THRILLER COMMUNITY CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT

How do you write a character who’s forced to make a legally and morally dangerous choice in a desperate effort to rescue his daughter? And what happens when readers find themselves rooting for him – seeing him as a good man shouldn’t be prosecuted for doing a very bad thing?

CB: That’s the question at the heart of Fatal Option, which compels readers to question how their own values hold up when bad decisions feel like the only decisions. Crafted by the Lambda Literary Award finalist behind the hit 2007 thriller Double Abduction, Fatal Option [Post Hill Press/Simon & Schuster, February 21, 2017] is heralded by bestseller

Peter Swanson (The Kind Worth Killing) as “a wintery tale of violence and redemption, artfully balanced by the portrayal of a family in crisis.” It has also earned praise from Washington Post staff writer Neely Tucker, author of Only the Hunted Run, Norb Vonnegut, author of Top Producer and The Trust, and other thriller writers at the top oftheir game.

In Fatal Option, it’s the coldest night of the year and Beakey’s protagonist – a suburban dad named Stephen Porter – has just capped off a night of lonely binge drinking by himself when he gets a desperate call from his teenage daughter, begging him to come rescue her in the blizzard. Stephen knows it’s dangerously irresponsible to get behind the wheel…but, unwilling to abandon his own child to the cold, heads out onto the winding, icy roads of Maryland’s Catoctin Mountains to bring his daughter home. Relentlessly suspenseful and intensely thought-provoking, Beakey’s captivating narrative has readers rooting for Stephen – whose condemnable actions aren’t at all easy to condemn – and questioning their own ethical boundaries, were they to find themselves in a similarly desperate situation.

“In real life, I would never drink and drive, and am glad society has evolved to consider drunk driving a morally terrible thing,” says Beakey. “But after hitting a patch of black ice on an empty road a few years ago, I couldn’t help but imagine, in an instant, something worse than my own death. That’s where this began, as a story about a man who does a very bad thing for very good reasons. It took many, many more drives down that dark and winding road to get the story right. Now that the journey’s over, I welcome conversation with readers who want to share their feelings, observations, and perhaps even a moral slap on the hand if the notion strikes them.”

Clever, engaging, and one to watch in the American thriller landscape, Chris Beakey has availability for interviews to promote the February 2017 release of Fatal Option. Among the topics he can discuss include:

▪ How stories about good people doing bad things in desperate situations opens up an important dialogue about morality and snap judgments

▪ Is it a bad thing when the people we love have secrets? How can grappling with this in fiction inform one’s own moral journey?

▪ What extreme lengths would you go to — what crimes would you commit — to save your children?

▪ How does a writer get into the mind of a character who surprises even his creator?

▪ What he’s learned from working alongside law enforcement professionals about criminal behavior and justice

▪ His experiences as a long-time mentor to at-risk youth, and the perspective and realism it’s brought to Fatal Option’s teenaged characters

Chris Beakey tells stories of good people caught in bad places. He writes fiction

from his homes in Washington, D.C. and Lewes, Delaware, as well as nonfiction as a ghostwriter for an organization that promotes bipartisan policies that strengthen the nation through smart investments in youth. His first, novel, Double Abduction, was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award.

USA Today bestselling author Madeline Martin delivers a captivating novel of passion and intrigue…

Connor Grant is in search of a lady. Not a bride, but a woman to become a skillful and seductive spy in the service of King James. In addition to being the King’s personal assassin, Connor heads a group of female spies who aid him in his work, women with nothing left to lose.

Ariana Fitzroy is the perfect mark. Destitute, orphaned, and completely alone, she’s missed her chance at an advantageous match at court and cheats at cards to survive. When Connor catches her in the act, he threatens to expose her, unless she joins his elite roster of spies.

She agrees and is whisked away to a deserted Scottish castle to begin her training. Ariana quickly takes to her lessons in seduction, deception, and hand-to-hand combat, but less easy to fight are her feelings of lust toward the ruggedly handsome Connor, feelings she suspects may be reciprocated.

When Connor recruits her help on a mysterious task, the pair must work together to track a dangerous target. But Ariana suspects Connor isn’t telling her everything—not just about the mission, but also about his past. Will the secrets between them threaten their mission? MY THOUGHTS

Highland Spy: Mercenary Maidens Series, Book 1 by Madeline Martin definitely shows craftsmanship in writing a mesmerizing Medieval Scottish Romance. Book 1 promises readers an exciting thrill ride into the “Mescenary Maidens” series. WOW! Set in a delapicated castle in Scotland and at the English court.

Ariana Fitzroy, after losing her family and her fortune, resorts to card games at court to survive, which she thinks she has the capability of winning. Connor Grant, is a trainer of fallen women from the English court and a broken personal assassin to the king. Which is where he encounters Ariana, cheating at cards, he gives her the option of going to prison or going with him in training. Of course, she accepts his offer. This is how she becomes his newest trainee.

“Highland Spy” is emotionally charged, intriguing, mesmerizing and utterly captivating! It has second chances, betrayal, challenges, female spies, claiming an inheritance once stolen, retribution, facing the consequences life has dealt head on, overcoming hopelessness to become confident, strong, and of course, romance and finding love. But will Ariana and Connor find their HEA or lose all to lies and deception?
The secondary characters are as enticing as the hero/heroine. They are very intriguing and makes the reader wish to learn more of their circumstances and how they became spies. This story has twists and turns, and surprises I didn’t see coming, betrayals I never preserved until the evil was encountered. I was captivated from the first few pages to the last page and beyond. I can not wait to read more of this exciting and thrilling series. Another must read Medieval Scottish Romance by Madeline Martin, who has become another favorite author of mine. She holds her readers in awe, and totally entranced in her stories. Definitely a WOW moment! Highly recommended! Fans of Medevial romance, Scottish romance, second chances, fast paced stories and well written romance are sure to enjoy “Highland Spy” by MadelineMartin. I definitely enjoyed this tale of live, love and finding a HEA! Another hit for Madeline Martin!

Two of Scottish romance’s most loved authors have joined pens to write a thrilling new time travel series filled with passion, danger, and intrigue. These never-before-published novels will sweep you to Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic is real, time is relevant, and there is no escape from desire…

Men are disappearing in the Highland crofting village of Heatheredge. The authorities suspect foul play, but without signs of violence—or bodies—they can’t prove a thing.

World champion swordsman Cailean Ross is living the fantasy of a lifetime as the victor of Heatheredge’s medieval reenactment Gathering. But when the fantasy turns into reality, swordplay becomes a fight to the death and he finds himself among the ‘missing’ statistics.

Julianna Mackay flees a man she fears is an evil wizard and literally runs into handsome Cailean Ross. Cailean defends Lady Julianna from her attackers. Together, they set out in search of the key to a six-hundred-year-old curse that can only be broken in medieval Scotland.

When the veil of time is lifted, Cailean and Julianna find that love may not be enough to save them or those they hold dear.

My Thoughts

Edge of Yesterday by Tarah Scott and Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a magical Time Travel and more. Book 1 in the new and thrilling “Edge” series. Set against the back drop of Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic and time are relevant.
Men are disappearing from a small village, with no bodies, or signs of violence, how can foul play be involved?

This is Cailean Ross, a world champion swordsman and Julianna Mackay, who flees a man she fears is an evil wizard’s tale.

The plot flows seamlessly. The characters are engaging, captivating, and well matched. The story is fast paced and masterfully written.
These authors are two of my favorite authors. They pull readers into their stories and holds captivated. I couldn’t put “Edge of Yesterday” down, it was so thrilling.

In, “Edge of Yesterday”, readers will find suspense, mystery, intrigue, danger, a wicked wizard, a six hundred year old Scottish curse, and a romance that crosses time, itself. Everything a Romance and Time Travel fan could possibly wish in a great story. Plus a set on the edge of your seat plot! What a tangle of excitement!
WOW! I can’t wait to read the next installment. There story has somewhat of a cliffhanger, leading readers into Book 2, but this book has a satisfying ending.
