IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO WELCOME….
~BACHELOR’S SPECIAL AUTHOR~
CHRISTINE WARNER TODAY!
So without further ado, here is, Christine!
Today I’d like to discuss hero names—actually I want to do more than discuss—but we’ll get to that in a minute. First we have to do a little background info so you will hopefully get to know me and that’ll help you understand where I’m coming from. I’ve been reading romance for decades and loving every minute of it. Of course it seemed a natural part of my evolution to write romance—so here I am J During my many years as an avid reader there are certain things about each story I’ve read that jump out at me and either grab my attention or lose it.
One thing that will lose me is if the hero has a name that doesn’t conjure up images of a super sexy strong man. After all, a lot of the reason we read romance is to fantasize about the hero–am I wrong? I think not
Now play along…close your eyes and picture yourself at the beach with Mr. Hot-and-Sexy. The sun and heat pounding off the glistening muscles of his toned, bulging biceps and you want nothing more than for him to grab you in a steamy embrace and crush his mouth to yours. He’s in a sexy pair of black swim trunks that show off more than you bargained for. His defined abs rippling and teasing you whenever he talks or laughs—and his broad chest is perfect to shield you from stray bullets or to rest your head upon as you’re dozing off to sleep after a movie and popcorn night. You pull yourself out of your fantasy, your gaze drifts up to the perfect swell of his lower lip, just before his head lowers to brush his mouth against yours—you murmur his name—“Lester.”
Story over…wah wah wah!
There are just some names which can blow that whole image. And it’s not that all of these names I’m going to share with you are horrible, but some names just shouldn’t be used in romance. Most of the time I think it comes down to name association. And of course character names are author’s choice. For instance, in Bachelor’s Special my heroes name is Chet Castle. I love the name Chet. I think of strong, sexy and all the hottie goodness that goes along with any hero. YUM!
Now, my sister doesn’t care for the name Chet and she tried repeatedly to get me to change it. Lol But I stuck to my guns because, well, Chet was Chet and he was my hero already.
Here is my list of the top ten worst names to give your hero…and I cheated toward the end by pairing them up….hehehe. (Disclaimer…if you know or love someone with one of these names, and they are every bit the hero in your eyes…I mean no disrespect…lol…this is for fun and all based on my opinion only).
*Linus…yes, I read a delicious romance recently where the hero was named Linus and every time his name appeared on the page it pulled me out of the story. All I could think of was the Peanuts cartoon…lol
*Lester…no need to elaborate
*Jody…for some reason names that aren’t gender specific don’t make me think sexy hero thoughts…if you have one that you think does, please share
*Henry…though I do have a fondness for the name Hank…it conjures up images of a hunky cowboy on horseback…and is actually the name of one of my heroes in a WIP…and yes he’s a cowboy
*Gaylord…this is another name in a romance book I read, and I’m sorry, but when it came to the all important love scene, I just couldn’t get past her moaning that name…lol
*Harry…I don’t mind the name in the Harry Potter series, just not in a romance
*Ron…Okay, I admit it, this is more personal. I had a boyfriend from years ago named Ron and we parted on bad terms…lol
*Alexander…I like the name, but I just think it’s been overused in the romance genre
*Lucien and Damien…these 2 rank the same for me. I’ve never met anyone with either name, but they don’t make me think hero, they make me think villain.
*Byron and Bartholomew…not drool-worthy or sigh inducing names, even though I know they are popular in historicals…sorry
Tell me, what hero names have you read in a romance book that pulled you from the story and made you scratch your head in wonder?
Looking forward to your answers!
Thank you,Christine, for stopping by today with your impressive list of hero worst names. I must admit I feel the same about some of the names you listed.
Bachelor’s Special Blurb:
Saute, simmer, and flambé…
Jill Adgate wants three things from life: a successful catering business, the devoted love of an exceptional man, and a family. What she has is no job, a mounting pile of bills, and her outspoken best friend—who sets her up on a blind date with the man who inadvertently ruined Jill’s life.
Chet Castle is a prosperous businessman who has everything, except the ability to trust. Burned by a money-hungry fiancée, he refuses to get involved with any relationship that has a shelf life longer than a head of lettuce.
Intrigued by her ambition—and determined to get her in bed—Chet offers Jill the chance of a lifetime: Work for him for the next eight weeks as his live-in chef and he’ll help her get her catering business off the ground. When sparks fly in the kitchen, Jill realizes what’s cooking with her commitment-phobic employer is a recipe for disaster…but it’s just too tasty to not take a bite.
The excerpt I’m sharing has a little taste from both Jill and Chet’s perspective. ENJOY!
Her body hummed as his smile wavered. Although he wore
sunglasses, she’d bet her last dollar his gaze swept across her chest,
lingering on the betrayal of her pert nipples pushing against the
fabric of her suit.
Until this moment, shyness had never been a trait she
possessed. Air stalled in her lungs, her palms grew sweaty, and
she itched to cover herself with a towel. Even though her replica
vintage swimsuit hid more than most sets of women’s underwear,
she felt too exposed. She turned to the side slightly and folded her
legs up. Not that it helped, but it made her feel a bit less exposed.
Chet slid his feet from his sandals, brushing a hand through
his hair. The heat from the sun wasn’t the only thing scorching her
skin. She trickled several droplets of water over her arms, but she
couldn’t drag her focus from his toned flesh.
Jill soaked in his ripped abs and the obvious package of
goodies covered by his brown swimsuit—the same sexy brown as
his hair. Damn, did a man have a right to fill out a pair of swimming
trunks like that? Flecks of hair, just enough to give him a manly
appeal, covered the etched muscles of his long, tan legs.
She licked her lips, hoping she could still speak. “Do you want
some privacy?” Yes, say yes. She needed an excuse to make an
escape without coming off like someone desperate to be making
Hell no, he didn’t want privacy. Through the shield of his sunglasses,
he inspected her body from the tips of her pink-painted toenails
to the top of her brightly flowered swimming cap. Did people still
actually wear those things? “No, you look comfortable. Stay and
enjoy the day.”
“Oh…are you sure?”
Amazed at his own ability to talk without his tongue hitting
the cement, Chet turned to throw his towel and sunglasses on a
nearby lounge chair. Damn.
The red and white polka-dot halter-style suit featured a tight
bodice, but her slender hips and shapely thighs hiding beneath
a matching skirt grabbed his attention until all oxygen left his
blood. Even showing less skin than the average girl on the beach,
she far exceeded sexy and alluring.
Get a grip, Castle. She’s off limits, no matter how delectable.
He turned and stepped onto the diving board. He bounced
along the surface as he made his way over the water. When he
looked at Jill’s bathing cap covering her head, he held back his
grin. The neon rubber flowers reminded him of something his
grandmother would’ve worn, but there the similarity ended.
Everything beneath that cap was far from making him think of
Besides laughing and a good round of humor, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, reading, writing but no arithmitic. A confessed people watcher, she finds inspiration for her stories in everyday activities. She loves to read and write about strong heroes and determined, sometimes sassy, heroines.
A girl gone wild, at least where social media is concerned, she enjoys meeting other avid readers and writers on facebook, twitter and her website at christine-warner.com.
