MBA&M: Good morning Kat, and welcome to MBA&M. Please give our readers who may not know of your works, some insight into the wonderful world of Kat  Martin?

KM: Hi, April!  The world of a writer is a lot smaller than people think.  I spend most of the time in front of my computer.  Since we live 25 miles out of town, we don’t go in very often.  Fortunately, it’s beautiful out here in the Montana mountains.  And I love the challenge of writing, so I’m never bored. I’ve written more than 55 novels to date and they just seem to keep coming.  My current focus is Romantic Suspense.   Along with my writing I have a great and talented author husband, L.J. Martin, who helps keep me entertained.

MBA&M: What is your inspiration behind writing “The Raines of Wind Canyon,” especially “Against the Mark?”

KM: I wanted to do a Romantic Suspense trilogy.  I thought 3 brothers would be take the books into a more personal level.  I love the mountains, so I decided to set the first novel, “Against the Wind,” in Wyoming with a hero named Jackson Raines.  I met Gabe and Dev, Jackson’s brothers,  as the story went along, and I knew they deserved their own books.   I didn’t plan to write more “Against” books, but they just kept popping into my head.

Ty Brodie, the hero of “Against the Mark,” showed up in Johnnie Riggs’ story, “Against the Night.”   I loved Ty’s sense of humor, optimistic attitude, and that beneath the surface, he was tough as nails.   I met his cousin, Dylan, as I wrote “Against the Mark,” and now I have 3 more Brodie brothers’ “Against” books, starting with “Against the Wild,” out next year.

MBA&M:  I know there are a few in this series, do you feel readers should start at the beginning or will “Against the Mark” stand alone?

KM: I’m not very good at writing series books–I prefer stand alone stories because I feel they have more impact and allow more creativity.  The “Against” books work great for me because they all stand alone, and yet have a subtle connection to the heroes in other books.  Readers can  explore the connection but it’s not important to the story line.  “Against the Mark” is definitely a stand alone novel.

MBA&M: What was your fascination with the Raines family?

KM: I suppose it was that they were tough and rugged, but had such wonderful family values.  They each had a kind of Western value system that included honor and loyalty, honesty and courage, things we don’t see enough of in the world today.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite Raines family member and why?

KM: Dev Raines was my favorite, but the men I’m writing about today are not Raines family members, just friends the Raines brothers met along the way.  As I said, each book stands alone.

MBA&M: How many books will be this series?

KM: So far with “Against the Mark,” out the end of August, there are nine.  Book ten, Dylan Brodie’s story, “Against the Wild,” is the first of three set in Alaska.

MBA&M: What are some of the challenges in writing a romantic suspense?

KM: I think Romantic Suspense is one of the toughest genres because of the complexity of the plots, the need to constantly update research (police procedurals, DNA, fingerprinting, forensics, etc), and along with all of that, weaving in the romantic relationship, which is a key part of the story.

MBA&M: If you could change any hero/heroine in one of your stories, in any of your books, which would it be, what would you change and why?

KM: Good heavens, no, I wouldn’t change any of them!  They are my fantasy men., my fantasy lovers.  I adore them all just the way they are!   And the women suit them just right.  At least I think so.  That was why I chose them to be together.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers how to connect with you and where they may purchase “Against the Mark?”

KM: “Against the Mark” is available at your local bookstore or in ebook form everywhere on-line.  You can find me on my website www.katmartin.com.  Or join me on facebook.

MBA&M: Thank you for spending time with us and our readers today, Kat. Do you have anything you would wish to add?

KM: Just that if you haven’t read any of my “Against” books, I hope you’ll give “Against the Mark” a try.  And that you enjoy reading Ty and Haley’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The perfect murder is a work of art …

In one catas

In one catastrophic instant, Haley Warren’s father was taken from her.  She hasn’t seen her father since her parents’ bitter divorce and never had the chance to mend the rift between them.  When her father’s new wife tells her she believes the explosion that killed her dad was no accident, Haley is driven to find out the truth about her father’s death and the woman he loved enough to abandon his family.
When private investigator Tyler Brodie agrees to help the hot little blonde, Haley Warren, find out the truth about her father’s death, he doesn’t realize the danger he and Haley are going to find themselves in.   It’s no coincidence that James Warren was investigating a suspected art theft when he was killed in a powerboat explosion.  After all, tens of millions of dollars worth of stolen art is plenty of motive for murder.
As Haley and Ty get closer to the truth, the truth gets ugly: Did Haley’s dad know too much…or was he in on the take? And although Ty’s a consummate professional, he’s having trouble focusing on the facts of the case, and not the figure of his gorgeous client. But Ty and Haley are determined to get to the bottom of the case–even if it means they die trying.

Excerpt #1

Against the Mark, by Kat Martin

“I’ve got another client for you.  Tyler Brodie, I’d like you to meet my grandniece, Haley Warren.  Haley’s out here from Chicago.  Her grandmother was my sister.”

Just to regain a little of his dignity, Ty let his gaze roam over her, starting at the frosted-pink toenails peeking out of strappy high-heeled, open-toed sandals, sliding up a pair of long legs in snug fitting jeans, across that bare midriff with its glittering bellybutton ring over a set of nicely rounded breasts to a pretty face framed by long, softly curling honey blond hair.

She had big blue eyes, and an Angelina Jolie mouth that made him think of dirty sex.  Maybe she read his thoughts for a faint blush rose in her cheeks.

Good.  A little payback only seemed fair.

Besides, she was a real pleasure to look at.  Not beautiful in the classic sense like some of the women he knew, but with those dimples and big blue eyes, she was way beyond cute.

“Nice to meet you, Ms. Warren.”

The smile was gone and she assessed him coolly.  “Aunt Ellie tells me you’re a friend, as well as an investigator.”

“I like to think that’s true.”

“Of course it’s true,” Ellie said.  “That’s why I know we can count on Ty to help us.”

Wariness slid through him.  Ellie had a way of bringing him clients who were nothing but trouble.  “How’s that?”

“Well, you see, three months ago Haley’s father died when his power boat exploded.”

“I’m sorry for your loss,” he said to her.

Grief flashed in her eyes an instant before she glanced away.  “Thank you.”

“At the time everyone thought it was an accident,” Ellie continued, “a gas leak of some kind that turned deadly.  Haley’s stepmother doesn’t believe it.  About a month ago, Betty Jean started emailing Haley, trying to convince her to come to Los Angeles and help her find out the truth.”

Ty focused on the leggy blonde.  “And you think she’s right because…?”

“I don’t know if she’s right or not.  I’ve never met her.  Before he died, my father and I had been estranged for nearly five years, ever since he left my mother and ran off with another woman.”

“Betty Jean,” he said, just to make sure he was getting this straight.

“That’s right.  After he moved to L.A., Dad tried to mend our relationship, but I just…I couldn’t get past his desertion.”  She glanced down and her eyes misted.  “Now my father’s gone.”

Ty nodded, beginning to get the picture.  “So your dad’s dead and you regret not mending your fences.”

“Yes, I do.  Very much.  But the thing is, some of the things Betty Jean says make sense.  I owe it to my father to find out what really happened.”

He flicked a glance at Ellie, whose features looked a little too bland to suit him.  “I take it you’re here to convince me to help her.”

“That’s right.  You know how good you are at these things, Tyler.  Johnnie’s out of town on some case or other.  And Haley will be helping you.  That’ll save you from having to do everything by yourself.”

Haley would be helping him.  He could think of any number of things he’d like her to do for him, but none of them had anything to do with business.  The fact was Haley Warren was Ellie’s niece.  Seducing her probably wasn’t a good idea.

“Have you talked to the police?”

“Betty Jean has,” Haley answered.  “The police said there was nothing to indicate any sort of foul play.  But my stepmother isn’t convinced and if she’s right–“

“I’ll tell you what.  I’ll look into the circumstances of the accident, see if anything looks suspicious.  I’ve got friends in the department.  If something’s not right, I’ll talk to them myself.”

Haley reached over and caught his arm.  He felt a little zing of awareness and figured she must have felt it too since she stepped back as if she’d been burned.

She glanced away, took a deep breath and forced her eyes back to his face.  “I want to be involved in this, Mr. Brodie.  I need to find out for myself.  I owe it to my father to find out the truth.”

Thanks and please spread the word!

{Sexy Romance Suspense author}

MBA&M: Please give our readers some insight into the life and mind of Amy Gamet?

AMY: I’m a stay-at-home mom to three young kids who keep me on my toes.  My life is pretty typical, and it’s safe to say I’ve completely lost my mind.

MBA&M: What drew you to write sexy romantic suspense?

AMY: Honestly, I chose romantic suspense over straight contemporary romance because I thought I would have a better chance of getting published.  Once I began the first book, however, I decided to self-publish instead of trying for a traditional contract.  My next series will be contemporary romance, though I do find myself throwing in suspense elements as well.

MBA&M: Why write a story with the main character in the Witness Protection Program? And where did you find your research material for your story?

AMY: My heroine’s husband is a pretty stable guy.  I needed to add an element of mystery without changing his character.  How do you make a nice guy into an interesting suspense character? Make sure a bunch of bad guys want him dead.

MBA&M: With organized crime, the FBI, Witness Protection, and the mafia, where how did you find the time to have a sexy, beautiful heroine placed in the mix?

What a thrill ride!

AMY: Gwen was the inspiration for the story; everything revolves around her.  She’s a quirky artist with a bit of psychic ability, and a fan favorite from the first book, Meant for Her.

MBA&M: How many books will be in the “Love and Danger” series, and whose story will be next? Inquiring minds want to know….

AMY: There’s one more book in the works.  It’s Becky’s story, the best friend of Julie from Meant for Her, and she’s falling hard for Colin’s brother Rowan from The One Who Got Away.  The book’s due to be released this Christmas.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite character to write in the “Love and Danger” series, why?

AMY: I loved Gwen, but Becky’s stolen my heart.  With her irreverent sense of humor and her in-your-face personality, she takes control of every situation.

MBA&M: If you could have dinner with any person, real or fiction, who would it be, where would you dine and why that person?

AMY: I’ve been staring at this question for far too long. The first person who comes to mind is my husband, because date-nights are always too few and far between. Oprah, though she’s not much of a fan of happily-ever-after books, it’s not every day you get a chance to eat sandwiches with Oprah. My grandmother, just to see her.  We’d eat some chicken cutlets and pork fried rice, LOL.  She used to have a container of pork fried rice from the Chinese food take-out place on the table at Christmas dinner.

MBA&M: Now, let’s play a little game….when I say certain words what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Mystery….fun….love…..suspense….food?

AMY: Mystery, solve…fun, play games… love, Brian… suspense, don’t keep me in… food, sure, why not!!

A bit about the author……..

I’m an unusually unusual individual who writes for the love of the characters and the story they create.
I have an accounting diploma that hangs above my desk,  a box of model rockets in the closet, dozens of history and science textbooks on my bookshelf and even a few “FOR SALE” signs in my garage. To say I dreamt of being a writer all my life is far from true. But nonetheless, it’s what I enjoy the most.

{Contemporary Romantic Suspense}

(Book 1 in a series)

so without further ado….

MBA&M: Hi, Angela, thank you for visiting with us today! Please tell our readers a little about yourself?

I’m an eclectic reader who loves almost every genre, but I read my first romance novel at 16. The more I read, the more I wanted to write similar books. Many offbeat attempts (and a couple of decades) later, I published my first story through Carina Press and have since sold a three-book series to Harper Impulse. I always try to build in a paranormal element to a contemporary and recognizable world with characters who find love in oftentimes humorous and extraordinary situations. That aside, I’m also a mild-mannered reporter with almost 15 years experience as a general assignment reporter, features editor and graphic designer. I’ve also worked as a production assistant in TV and film. I’m a HUGE advocate of animal rescue. I love all animals, especially my spoiled rotten sidekick-in-fur, Dusti (she’s a cat).

MBA&M: What was your inspiration for writing “On The Scent”?

I read an article about an Italian heiress who left her entire fortune of £10 million to a stray black cat she fed regularly, and her nurse was left in charge of the cat. I’m a huge animal lover, but even I thought, “That’s craaazy!” But as my mind has a tendency to do, it started pinging off ideas for a story in different directions. What if this happened to a nurse here? She might need protection. Oooh, hunky bodyguard! What if he was more than a bodyguard? What if he had psychic abilities and could communicate with the animals? What if the heiress wasn’t who she’d claimed to be? And so on.

MBA&M: What inspired you to write Romantic Suspense in general?

I never intentionally set out to write romantic suspense, but it seems every time my story starts moving along, suddenly there’s a suspense element to it. I think I just love suspense in general, whether it be in movies or books, so it always finds its way into whatever I’m working on. My father is a retired FBI officer and police officer, and I often wonder if I inherited his penchant for solving mysteries.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite character in “On The Scent” to write? Why?

It’s a toss up between Abbott and Costello, but I’ll go ahead and say Costello. Yes, I chose the dog over the human characters. My best friend’s dog, Sunny, is who I based Costello on simply because Sunny himself is such a character. I’m always in stitches around that dog! If anyone says Costello isn’t realistic, I’d like to introduce them to Sunny. He’ll be humping her legs and grinning mischievously in minutes!

MBA&M: What is your inspiration to use animals and mystery in your stories?

I love animals and am around them all the time. In my job as a reporter, I implemented a pet of the week column and took a lot of pride in being a real fluff reporter, spotlighting animal rescue efforts in our community. There are a lot of people who love pets, but the problem of homeless animals and neglected or abused animals is very widespread. Any chance I get to promote responsible pet ownership, I take it. That aside, I think animals can be a great healing factor for fictional characters and can help progress the humans’ development throughout a story, if used correctly. As for mystery, who doesn’t enjoy a good mystery?

MBA&M:  Give us one word to describe your characters in “On The Scent”…..

Hannah Dawson: Worried

Zachary Collins: Hot

The Psychic Detective: Awesome

MBA&M: What is your all-time favorite name for a dog and a cat?

I think Kitty Purry (Katie Perry’s cat’s name) is genius.

I like ironic names for dogs. For example, my brother had a tiny Chihuahua he named Rambo.

MBA&M: Who is one of your female role models, be it real of fiction? Why?

I’m not shy about stating this. I love Lois Lane. When I was a little girl, I had three older brothers, no sisters, and my mother passed away when I was 12. I was surrounded by overbearing men. I remember watching “Superman: The Movie” and later “Lois and Clark: The Real Adventures of Superman” and being amazed a woman could match wits with men like that. She’s tough, independent, and, duh, Superman is her boyfriend. I’d love to be her!

MBA&M: If you were a character in one of your novels, who would you be and why?

I’d be Hannah in “On the Scent.” She’s got money, pets, and a sexy P.I. looking after her. Enough said.

MBA&M: Which author would you have write your story with flair but a bit of mystery?

Oooh. Tough question. Gonna have to go with Nora Roberts on that one.

MBA&M: And last but not least, what can readers expect to see from you next, if you can reveal this information of course?

The second book in this series should be out around September/October — I don’t yet have a release date. Alexandra King, the psychic medium who helps Zach in “On the Scent” finds herself in the middle of a serial killer mystery while trying to reunite Zach with his brother, Dylan. It has ghosts, suspense, and, yes, Abbott and Costello make an appearance in this book, too.

Here’s the official blurb for ON THE SCENT:

Hannah Dawson has a big problem: she’s just become the unexpected owner of a snarky cat, a loveable but not-so-bright dog… and their $10 million fortune!

Which would be awesome if it hadn’t made her the target of every wacko in the metro Atlanta area. Now Hannah and her famous pets need protecting. And there’s only one man who can help them…

Enter Zachary Collins: ex-TV star of ‘The Psychic Detective’ and street-wise private investigator – all 6 foot blue-eyed gorgeousness!

Only Zach’s got secrets of his own… not least that he finds Hannah, his client, irresistibly hot. The more time he spends keeping her out of harm’s way, the more he’s tempted to give in to the attraction and break all his own rules.

So without further ado….

Top Ten Reasons the Regency Is Popular

1.      Jane Austen—Arguably the mother of three genres. With her female-centric novels revolving around love, marriage, and social status, she might be said to be the forerunner of the Regency, the contemporary romance (because her books were contemporary when she wrote them), and women’s fiction. Add her wonderful sense of snark, her unforgettable characters, and plot twists, and it’s easy to see why her works are still popular today.

2.      Georgette Heyer—Carrying the tradition of Jane Austen into modern times, Georgette Heyer invented the Regency as we know it today—minus the love scenes, of course, but her themes carry on the tradition Jane Austen started and we see the echo of them in the racier Regencies today. Heyer’s meticulously researched novels are still popular today for her memorable characters and attention to detail.

3.      The sumptuous dresses—What Regency reader (or author for that matter) doesn’t like to imagine herself turned out for a night on the town in the perfect evening gown? Bonus: Regency-era stays and undergarments were not as confining as either eighteenth-century predecessors or their Victorian successors.

4.      The balls—And everything about them, from finding the perfect gown, to dressing for the occasion, the hope that the right man would ask you to dance, perhaps waltz even (more than once if he was daring)…

5.      The social restrictions—While not quite so repressed as the Victorian era, the Regency period still possessed its set of social rules, which any heroine worth her salt is going to break somewhere along the way.

6.      The other side of the coin—While not quite as wild as the eighteenth century, Regency folks still knew how to have a good time. Normal bedtime for the members of the ton during the season might be four or five in the morning, even for the demure young misses.

7.      Colin Firth—As Mr. Darcy, naturally. What Regency fan doesn’t like to relive his swim in the lake, or that scene where he watches Lizzie play the piano and sing?

8.      The lingo—Whether you’re in your altitudes or simply foxed, where else are you going to encounter so many fun synonyms for being drunk?

9.      The conflicts—The Regency period was a time of great upheaval on all fronts. England was fighting in what amounted to a world war as the battles against Napoleon took place as far away as India and Egypt, and not just on the Peninsula. Economically and socially, as well, the times they were a-changin’, and all that provides authors with a great variety of material to work with.

Ashlyn_Macnamara_Headshot_medAshlyn Macnamara writes Regency romances with a dash of wit and a hint of wicked. She considers this writing gig her midlife crisis, but figures it’s less risky than rock climbing or skydiving. When not writing, she looks for other excuses to neglect the housework, among them knitting, reading and wasting time on the internet in the guise of doing research. Despite her insistence on looking toward the past, she can be found on her website, Facebook, and Twitter. She also likes to play at being a Duchess from time to time.

Her second book A Most Devilish Rogue is available August 27, 2013.

Years ago, when Isabelle Mears was still a young miss too infatuated to know better, she surrendered her innocence to a dishonorable man. Though ruined and cast out from society, she has worked hard to shelter her illegitimate son, Jack. Having sworn off men in her quiet but dignified life, Isabelle is unprepared for the deep longing that rips through her when a handsome stranger rescues her rambunctious six-year-old from the pounding ocean surf.

George Upperton is a man in trouble with debts, women, and a meddling family. He is, by all accounts, the last gentleman on earth Isabelle should be drawn to. But loneliness is a hard mistress, and caution gives way to desire . . . even though Isabelle is convinced that happiness can’t be found in the arms of such a devilish rogue. Only when Jack is kidnapped does Isabelle discover the true depth of George’s devotion—and how far a good man will go to fight for the woman whose love is all that matters.

Three very different sisters beguile society with their beauty and charm, but only one of them must fulfill a prophecy: marry a prince. Who is the mystery Prince Charming, and which sister will be his bride?

On the way to marry a prince in a castle, a lady should never:

  1. Bribe an infuriatingly arrogant and undeniably irresistible ship captain,
  2. Let him kiss her senseless on a beach,
  3. Battle thieves at his side,
  4. Exchange wedding vows with him, even under the direst circumstances.

But daring, determined Arabella Caulfield isn’t just any lady. And Luc Westfall is no typical ship captain. He’s the new Duke of Lycombe, and to defeat a plot that could destroy his family he must have an heir. Now he knows just the woman for the job . . . and he’s not above seduction to turn this would-be princess into a duchess.

Pump-Up-Your-BookLion's Head Deception banner

Thanks for having me as a guest. My writing journey began over twenty-five years ago when I walked into a class to learn about short stories. The late Henrietta Blake stood and asked me if I knew what a short story was. Little did I know where that simple question would lead me, sitting here writing about my fourth novel,Lion’s Head Deception.

Writing has been the way to put my imagination to work. If curiosity and imagination can be inherited I’m thankful for two parents who encouraged both. But I want to recognize the one who influenced me the most, my grandfather.

I grew up listening to him, an Ozark Mountain story teller, spinning tales of the caves on his farm, describing them as hiding places once used by Jesse & Frank James’ gang. It didn’t matter if the stories were true or not. Those legends set fire to my imagination, creating images that emerged slowly over the years, and finally igniting as my short stories and novels.

It all culminates in the release of Lion’s Head Deception, a dystopian novel that was influenced by conversations we are having today about privacy, surveillance, and security.

In the United States our individual right to privacy is held to be sacrosanct. We expect to be free from searches without a warrant and free from arrest without cause. Since the event of 9/11 there has been a sharp increase in the fear that our expectation of privacy has eroded. That fear is both imagined and, judging by some of today’s news and events, very real.

The theme of Lion’s Head Deception taps into our contemporary conversation as we try to balance our post 9/11 desire for safety with excessive surveillance and social regulation.

You will meet Matt Tremain. He’s not a superhero, just an ordinary person who will have to find out if he has the courage to do what is needed. He will have to find out if he can distinguish between friends and enemies. His story begins with a warning phone call and ends in an action-packed run to the finish line.

I hope you will find his story challenging, and the read enjoyable. There’s a twist to the old riddle, “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” My version is, “if words hide between the covers and no one reads them…” Well, you get my idea.

That’s my way of acknowledging how important readers are. I hope you will read Lion’s Head Deception, and when you do, please send me a note letting me know what you think.

Thank you again for spending time with us and our readers!!

Lion's Head DeceptionIn the prologue, the backdrop for Lion’s Head Deception is set, amongst rioting and unrest in a destabilized city.

Matt Tremain is a shy, private person who discovers a passion for writing blogs—a mission that propels him into investigative reporting. A tipster warns him of a diabolical scheme Matt simply can’t ignore. After the tipster is killed, Matt honors his memory by going forward to investigate the truth behind the conspiracy. He meets a television reporter and a cameraman also investigating the intrigue. Are they potential partners or rivals? A detective offers his assistance, but Matt is unsure of his true motivation. He is equally unsure of the allegiance of those in the top administration of police services. Matt Tremain and his friends are forced to go on the run, evading the newly-formed security teams. They must expose the truth before they are discovered, arrested and perhaps exterminated themselves…

The reader is introduced to Matt Tremain when a test message warns him of impending arrest. The first part of the novel provides an understanding of how he learns about a conspiracy, and the person behind it. A television journalist is investigating the same treachery. Will they be able to join forces? The end of part one introduces a police detective. Will he be friend or foe?

Part two takes place at a private retreat. The antagonist, the scheme’s architect, unveils the complete details of his plan and gets the backing of his three co-conspirators. The location is the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. It takes place at Lion’s Head and gives the novel the working name.

In an action-packed run to the finish line, will Matt and his partners be able to face the challenges it will take to expose the lies and treachery behind Operation CleanSweep?

Chuck WaldronChuck Waldron’s latest novel, Lion’s Head Deception, is a dystopian story about an investigative blogger who uncovers more than he ever imagines…and has no idea what to do with his discovery.

An investigative blogger uncovers a sinister conspiracy, a billionaire’s plan backed by select government officials, designed to exterminate citizens who do not live up to a predetermined screening matrix; under the guise of rioting and a destabilized city, the plan is implemented and the blogger fights not only to discover and reveal the truth, but to survive.

“I grew up,” Chuck said, “listening to my grandfather, an Ozark Mountain story teller, spinning tales of the caves on his farm, describing them as hiding places once used by the Jesse & Frank James’ gang. It didn’t matter if the stories were true or not. Those legends set fire to my imagination, creating images that emerged slowly over the years, finally igniting as my short stories and novels.”

Now, thirty-plus short stories and three novels later, ideas keep coming, with more novels under development. Do they share anything in common? Each has its own unique voice and tale to tell, yet, at their heart, his stories tell about the human condition – the good, the bad and the ugly.

As Chuck tells it, “stored images that echo in my writing include train whistles in the night, Norman Rockwell childhood scenes, U.S. Army memories, blue collar jobs, university, a professional career, and finally retirement. Many of my images are drawn from this pool of memories: places visited, sights seen, and people met. The rest I fill in with my imagination: dreams of places yet to be visited, sights yet to be seen, and people yet to meet.”

His literary roots were planted in the American Midwest and thrived when transplanted to the rich, cultural soil of Ontario. He and his wife, Suzanne, are now warmed by the sun on Florida’s Treasure Coast.

His latest book is Lion’s Head Deception.

About the Author

Jodi Ellen Malpas was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, UK, where she lives with her family. Marcel Proust in Taos: In Search of Times Past

So without further ado, sit back and enjoy your visit with….Jon Foyt!!

MBA&M: Hello, Jon and welcome to MBA&M! Please give our readers some insight into the life of Jon Foyt?

JON: I grew up in Indianapolis and wanted to be a racecar driver at Indy, but soon gave that up to go to college to study journalism and geography, then business at Stanford. I was in the Korean War in Military Intelligence, then worked in electronics and radio broadcasting in the Pacific Northwest, before getting into real estate development, where my late wife, Lois, and I built apartments, condominiums, and single family homes. Later, I went back to school at the University of Georgia to study Historic Preservation. Lois and I then moved to New Mexico to write novels about the Southwest, archaeology, and Native Americans. My wife and I wrote together for 20 years until she passed away, and now I continue to write. I’m 81 and active in an adult retirement community in Northern California.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Marcel Proust In Taos”?

JON: The enchantment of New Mexico is exemplified by the Taos School of Artists dating back to the1890’s. Taos is also an ancient Spanish town, plus there is the 1200 AD Taos Pueblo of Native Americans. Taos is also near the Atomic Lab in Los Alamos. All of these ingredients inspired the writing of Marcel Proust in Taos.

MBA&M: Who was your favorite character to write about and why?

JON: Christopher is an atomic scientist retiring to Taos, where he falls in love with the artist Marlene. He is also writing a novel within the novel about the dangers of nuclear terrorism. His character is complex, aggressive and, I think, of deep interest to the reader.

MBA&M: This is a twofold question: What was the allure to you, for writing a story on microbrewery, nuclear terrorism and love? And what made you chose New Mexico as your setting for “Marcel Proust In Taos”?

JON: I lived for 16 years in New Mexico. Santa Fe and Taos are the two places in the United States where you don’t feel like you’re in the United States, or so said D. H. Lawrence when he visited Taos in the early 1920’s.

MBA&M: What was the most challenging thing about writing this story?

JON: Writing a novel within the novel is most challenging, yet it opens up an interesting experience for the reader.

MBA&M: Which secondary character was your favorite to write, why?

JON: Marlene, the immigrant artist is a complex character, for she has left her native Germany to seek a new life in a very different venue. She has to integrate herself into the community while at the same time pursuing her art, opening a microbrewery and enjoying her love affair with Christopher.

MB&AM: Does any of the characters in this story portray you at all, anyone you know, or are they straight out of your head?

JON: These are each fictional characters, totally invented, and do not represent anyone I know.

MBA&M:  Who would you say was the biggest influence in your writing career?

JON: My high school English teacher, oh so many years ago.

MBA&M: What advice do you have for inspiring authors? AND what was the quirkiest advice or thing you did to sale a story?

JON: Write about what you know or have researched and feel about deeply. Writing is hard work, so be prepared to experience a certain amount of isolation in the process of writing, editing, and re-writing.

MBA&M: Please tell us where to connect with Jon Foyt, and where we may purchase “Marcel Proust in Taos”?
