Ruby Hill by Sarah Ballance

From her earliest memories, Ashley Pearce has been drawn to Ruby Hill Lunatic Asylum, and she’s not the only one. Decades after the abandoned hospital ended its institutional reign of torture and neglect, something lurks in the shadows. Since she’s a paranormal investigator, it’s Ashley’s job to find out what.

Crime scene expert Corbin Malone doesn’t believe in ghosts. A born skeptic, he has no interest in entertaining the hype surrounding the mysterious deaths at Ruby Hill, but he won’t turn his back while more women die. He agrees to an overnight investigation, never expecting his first encounter would be with the woman he pushed away a year ago. But when he discovers Ashley is a target, he learns his greatest fear isn’t living with his own demons, but losing her for good.

When Aleksy allowed Sheri and her sister into his compound, he didn’t know about the zombie bite on her back. It’s only a matter of time before she turns into one of the rising dead and threatens their existence, but Aleksy has a secret need for Sheri and her stories. For everyone’s safety, he chains her to his bedroom wall, hoping for just one more day. But how long will the community allow Aleksy to ignore his own rule: always kill the infected. Always.

Northern Light by E.J. Russell

Nothing gives art fraud investigator Luke Morganstern a bigger rush than busting forgers, the low-life criminals who dare victimize true artists. Stefan, left homeless and destitute after the death of his wealthy partner, doesn’t exactly deny the forgery — he claims he doesn’t remember, an excuse Luke can’t accept.

But Luke’s elderly client suggests Stefan may be telling the truth and presents another possibility – a dark presence in the woods, a supernatural fury simmering for decades. Luke must face down his fear of the uncanny – and admit his feelings for Stefan – if either of them is to survive.

A Home for My Heart cover mock

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a few tidbits about yourself?

AuthorImage-36AM: I am a wife of 26 years, a mother of 3 college kiddos, and a lifelong reader and writer–and Texan! I love classic literature and history. I love to travel with my husband. (Right now, that’s mostly on business trips, but that’s ok!) I wrote five novels in ten years before landing my first publishing contract. A Home for My Heart is my third published novel. But the thing I hope defines my life is a deep love for and abiding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. I am constantly humbled and amazed by all that He has done in my heart.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “A Home For My Heart”?

AM: I really wanted to tell a story set in my husband’s home state of Pennsylvania. As I started researching online, I came upon a small tidbit about a home for “orphan and friendless” children that was in his hometown! I dug a bit deeper and discovered the home was born out of a revival on the college campus in town. The whole history just captured my heart and I knew I could write it as a gift of love to the town where my husband was born and raised.

A Home for My Heart cover mockMBA&M: What inspired you or what was the appeal to write a story during the turn of the century?

AM: So far, all of my published novels have been set in the pre-WWI years. A Home for My Heart, set in 1910, is the earliest of the time periods I’ve attempted. I ended up writing in this era because my first published book, Wings of a Dream, was based on my great-grandparents story, which happened during the influenza epidemic of 1918. I fell in love with the time period because of the mix of old and new. It was a time of change and yet a time where things were still the same.

MBA&M: Is “A Home For My Heart” a part of a series,if so,do you feel the readers should the previous titles first, or is this a stand alone title?

AM: All of my books are stand alone titles thus far. We’ll see if I ever get up the nerve to tackle a series!

MBA&M: What was the most challenging part of writing “A Home For My Heart”?

AM: All of it was challenging! Seriously, the research was elusive. God did a couple of amazing things to bring a few documents to light that hadn’t been seen in years, but for the most part, I had little to go on as far as the day-to-day operations of the home. And then the characters and plotting gave me fits! i did a couple of major rewrites at the request of my editor. Many days I wondered if it would ever come together. It finally did after many, many, many days of hard work. And the feedback so far has indicated the work was worth it!

MBA&M: What was your very favorite scene to write and your worst or most heartbreaking scene to write?

AM: One of the children in the home gets into some serious trouble. The most heartbreaking scene for me to write was when Sadie realizes she couldn’t do anything else to help him. It’s that moment you know as a parent when there are things in your child’s life you can’t fix, you can only relinquish them to the hands of God. But that is always a heart wrenching moment!

MBA&M: What made you want to write a story about a home for Orphans?

AM: After I’d made the decision to write about the home because I loved the history of it, I realized that my heart also gravitated in that direction due to all the wonderful families I know who have been touched in some way by adoption. And what better way to remind us that we are all adopted sons and daughters of God? That is such an amazing thing to think about!

MBA&M: What is your next project?

AM: My next project is a novel not yet titled (due out in fall of 2014) set in Oklahoma in 1917. It is about a woman pursuing her master’s degree who instead has to come home and care for her recently widowed sister and teach high school. She is also given charge of the girls basketball team. Reluctantly, she learns the game, with the help of the handsome boys basketball coach, of course! While A Home for My Heart is a love letter to my family in Pennsylvania, this next book is a love letter to the many, many teachers and coaches in my family. I have loved writing that story!

MBA&M: Who inspires you the most to write?

AM: That’s hard to say. There have been many that have inspired me along the way. The author that inspired me to want to be an author was Eugenia Price. I read her epic novels during middle school and fell in love with history and historical fiction. My sister inspires me to write because she never liked history or reading but has learned to like both through historical fiction. Now she reads as much or more than I do! And my family inspires me to write, for in my stories I find myself saying things I want to say to each of them but sometimes find it hard to articulate anywhere but on the page.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where they may connect with you and where to  purchase “A Home for My Heart”?

AM: I blog regularly at www.annemateer.com. I also interact on twitter (www.twitter.com/annemateer) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/authorannemateer). I have several boards on pinterest as well (www.pinterest.com/annemateer). I’d love to see you around any of those places! My books can be purchased in physical form or ebook at all the major book retailers, both physical and internet. (You might have to request it at a smaller brick-and-mortar store, but they should be able to get it without a problem.)

Anne, do you have anything you  would like to add?

AM: I’d just like to say how much I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to tell you a little about me and my book. I’d love to hear from y’all, too. Being a reader myself, my favorite way to connect with new friends is over books!

Thank you, Anne, for taking a few moments of your time to visit with us today. What a fascinating story!

He stared at her. “That’s quite a list of shortcomings,” he eventually said. “Is that all?”

“No.” She shoved her wet hair from her face, though she managed to keep her regal stance, nose firmly in the air at nose-bleed height. “I held back because I didn’t want to be overly rude.”

He laughed softly. “Don’t hold back, Leah. Let’s hear all of it.”

“Well, your truck has more sporting goods than a store, you never say you’re sorry, and your girlfriends look like supermodels. I mean, what is that? There’s nothing wrong with real boobs, you know!”

“I fail to see the problem.”

She snorted again, and he was starting to feel greatly insulted. “You’re not exactly a walk in the park, Leah.”

“No. You’re flighty, you live for your every whim, you downplay any real emotion you feel.”

She hugged herself tight. “Good thing this is all pretend then, isn’t it,” she said softly.

She was freezing. And hauntingly gorgeous, so damn gorgeous standing there wet and silvery by the moon’s glow, like a goddess. It’s Leah, he had to keep reminding himself. Leah, who’d once beaten him in a marshmallow-eating contest, only to puke all over him. Leah, whose dark-green eyes had a way of telling the world to bite her. Leah, who’d run off on him and left him heartbroken. He took a step into her—for what exactly, he had no idea—and she poked a finger into his chest.

“God,” she said. “You’re so…” Words apparently failed her, but she let out a sound that managed to perfectly convey how annoying he was.

“Ditto,” he said, and then grabbed the finger drilling a hole between his pecs and tugged her hard enough that she lost her balance and fell against him.

He wrapped an arm around her waist, entangling a hand in her wet hair.

She went still as stone and stared into his eyes. And then lowered her gaze to his mouth.

Yeah, they were in sync there. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. Hers caught audibly in her throat, a good sign, he decided. Maybe she wouldn’t knee him in the balls. Testing the waters, he grazed her jawline with his teeth.

She shivered.

Then he slid his mouth to the very corner of hers and was rewarded by the clutch of her hands on his shirt. Having her hold on to him like this, like he was her only anchor, sent a bolt of lust straight through him. “Leah,” he murmured, hearing the surprise in his own voice, feeling the heat course through him as he finally—God, finally—covered her mouth with his.

Her lips parted for him eagerly, and he groaned, drowning in the erotic collision of her hot tongue and chilled, wet body.

Serious trouble. He was in serious trouble.

The Cure

So without further ado, welcome Douglas!

MBA&M: Douglas, please  tell our readers a little about yourself?

DOUGLAS: I’m a former biotech executive who quit to pursue his dream of writing. My first science fiction/technothriller, WIRED, was independently published as an e-book, and went on to become a New York Times and USA Today bestseller (which was so far beyond surreal I can’t even begin to describe it). My new novel, THE CURE, is being published by Forge (a division of Macmillan) as a hardcover and e-book. I have a wife, two children (son 19 and daughter 17), and two dogs, and I live in San Diego, California.

MBA&M: What is your inspiration behind “The Cure”?

DOUGLAS: I was reading one of the numerous science publications I get, and I saw an article about studies that were showing differences in brain structure between psychopaths and normals, possibly accounting for their absolute selfishness, ruthlessness, and lack of conscience. I was intrigued. It seems like we’re in the middle of an epidemic of these monsters. And while most aren’t the Hannibal Lecter type, even the seemingly benign psychopaths among us inevitably leave a trail of shattered lives in their wakes.

I wondered, if psychopathy (pronounced psy-cop-athy) is related to brain structure, what if someone found a way to diagnose it remotely? Would society be justified in monitoring psychopaths? Even before they’ve committed any crimes? And even more intriguing, what if you could cure this condition? While answers to these questions may seem straightforward, the deeper you dig, the more unexpected complexities you find.

I did endless research, learning everything I could about the condition — and the more I read, the more fascinated I became. I then called a professor who did research on this. The guy goes into prisons and conducts MRI brain scans on murderers and rapists who are known to be psychopaths — and he goes into the room alone with them — and they are unrestrained. Are you kidding me! The guy was fascinating (and far braver than I would ever be). He says that because of prisoner/scientist confidentiality, they would often admit to other crimes they had committed while he was alone with them. After this conversation, I knew I had to write the book.

MBA&M: What was the most challenging part of writing “The Cure”?

DOUGLAS: For all of my books, the most challenging part is the plot. I require my plots to be fast paced, exciting, with lots of twists and turns — and with a lot on the line: in this case the future course of human history. I also like to include science-fictional elements in my thrillers — the sort of thing Michael Crichton used to do. I also insist on including plenty of food for thought, so readers have much to ponder after they’ve finished reading. I can’t tell you how many weeks I spend on each novel, pulling my hair out, not writing a single word, just trying to figure out the plots.

MBA&M: Inquiring minds what to know: What did you do to celebrate the release of “The Cure”?

DOUGLAS: What everyone should do! I waited a day and then came on MBA&M. I’m celebrating this very second J

MBA&M: If you had to pick one character in any book to spend time with, which story or book would you pick?

DOUGLAS: Kira Miller, hands down. She is a character from WIRED, and I find her to be the most interesting one ever. Since I created her, I know I’m a little biased, but I’ve heard this from a number of readers as well, so I’m not entirely delusional J   (just mostly delusional)

MBA&M: Who is your true life hero? Why?

DOUGLAS: I don’t want to seem like I’m copping out here, but I don’t really have a single one. I think anyone who is selfless and sacrifices for others is being heroic, especially those who put their lives on the line like firemen, police, and members of the military — but doctors, nurses, those who do social work, charity work, etc. are also very heroic in my view.

MBA&M: What is your favorite time of day, and what motivates you to write?

DOUGLAS: I like the mornings. I love writing, so I don’t need any motivation to write — when I have something to write about. That is my problem. Getting motivated to figure out the darn plots. For me, writing is an absolute pleasure. Figuring out the plot, on the other hand, is torture, especially because I don’t usually figure it all out until I’m far more than halfway through writing the novel. I live in constant terror that I’ll paint myself into a corner, or fail to come up with a cool twist,  and be left with hundreds of hours of wasted effort and no way to finish. So far, I’ve a always managed to pull it off, but there’s bound to be a first time . . .

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to connect with you and where they may purchase “The Cure”?

DOUGLAS: THE CURE is available as hardcover at all major bookstores, and as an eBook at all major eBook retailers. I’ve pasted links to the book’s Amazon and B&N eBook pages below. The best way to interact with me and stay current is through Facebook. You can friend me at Douglas E. Richards Author. Sadly, my website is horrible. I really need to spend some major time and effort to get this up to speed, but I haven’t yet. And readers can always feel free to send an e-mail to me at doug@san.rr.com.

If any of you do end up reading the book, be sure to let me know what you think (unless you hate it, then feel free to keep this to yourself J )

Thank you for stopping by today! How thrilling to have you with us!

Psychopaths cause untold misery. If you found the cure for this condition, just how far would you go to use it?

Erin Palmer had a devastating encounter with a psychopath as a child. Now a grad student and scientist, she’s devoting her life to studying these monsters. When her research catches the attention of Hugh Raborn, a brilliant neuroscientist who claims to have isolated the genes responsible for psychopathic behavior, Erin realizes it may be possible to reverse the condition, restoring souls to psychopaths. But to do so, she’ll not only have to operate outside the law, but violate her most cherished ethical principles.

As Erin becomes further involved with Raborn, she begins to suspect that he harbors dark secrets. Is he working for the good of society? Or is he intent on bringing humanity to its knees?

Hunted by powerful, shadowy forces, Erin teams up with another mysterious man, Kyle Hansen, to uncover the truth. The pair find themselves pawns in a global conspiracy—one capable of destroying everything Erin holds dear and forever altering the course of human history . . .

American society in the early twenty-first century seems to be experiencing a growing epidemic of psychopathic monsters. Douglas E Richards’s The Cure explores this condition, and the surprisingly thorny ethical and moral dilemmas surrounding it, within an explosive, thought-provoking, roller-coaster-ride of a thriller that will have readers turning pages deep into the night.

[Contemporary Holiday Romance]

Fool’s Gold Book 12.5
September 24, 2013

Christmas on 4th Street

*From the author’s website*

There’s nowhere better to spend the holidays than with New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery in the town of Fool’s Gold, where love is always waiting to be unwrapped…

Noelle Perkins just got a second chance at life, and she intends to make the most of every minute. That’s why she ditched a frustrating legal career to open her own store in Fool’s Gold, California. The Christmas Attic celebrates everything that’s magical about her favorite season. Business is booming, and as a bonus, gorgeous army doctor Gabriel Boylan has offered to help out during the holiday rush.

Gabriel’s memories of Christmas past contain more sour grapes than sugar plums, thanks to a drill sergeant father who ran his home like a boot camp. Spending the holidays with his family while he recuperates from injury sounds as appetizing as last year’s eggnog. Still, there are some enjoyable distractions in town, including sunny, sexy Noelle…and the red-hot mistletoe kisses they can’t stop sharing.

Gabriel didn’t think he was made for happily-ever-afters. But when fate hands you a love as sweet and surprising as this, only a fool could refuse…..

Christmas in Fool’s Gold will work its magic on these two, as it always does… CHRISTMAS ON 4TH STREET is beautifully packaged as a gift-sized hardcover and is also available in ebook and audio. This will make a wonderful gift for the romance readers on your list!

Will history repeat itself? Or will magic travel through time to chase another couple bound by love?
We am pleased to announce the release of Written in the Stars by best-selling authors Patricia Rosemoor and Sherrill Bodine.
“A passionate tale of destiny, danger and dark magic—and a love so powerful that it conquers time.” Mary Jo Putney, New York Times Bestselling Author
A bit about Written in the Stars:
‘A love so deep that it can last through centuries?
In 1601, Lady Elizabeth York’s star-shaped birthmark proclaims her a child of magic. When she arrives at Dunham Castle to marry Carlyle, heir to the Duke of Lennox, she finds enchantment in the eyes and touch of Will Grey, the Duke’s bastard son. Bewitched by Elizabeth, Will defies all for their love, and his jilted half-brother places a curse on them both.
Searching for a treasure ship sunk long ago, present-day marine archeologist Cordelia Ward is pursued romantically by both salvager Innis Foley and treasure hunter Morgan Murphy. She is haunted by a murderous nightmare where one man is the killer and the other the victim.  But which man is her enemy–which one her soul mate? Can a journal that belonged to her ancestress, Lady Elizabeth York show her the answers…in time to save her true love?
Chased by evil, two women discover their own magic to fight a villain’s curse on the Posey rings that draw them to the men they are destined to love.
