Victoria: Gathering Storm, is the fifth installment in my serial saga just released
September 19.
This series is a little different from what readers are used to because
it’s an ongoing story – not in the sense of cliffhanging endings. Each book does tell its
own story complete with ending, but the next begins where the last ended. That’s why
each book comes with a strong recommendation for reading in order.
The first four books were loosely based on themes of fairy tales or beloved
stories, i.e., Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, The Pied Piper, and Little Red Riding
Hood. These tales are situated against a backdrop of modern day knights and heroes,
witches, elves, berserkers, psychics, demons, vampires, werewolves, and more. While
that may sound silly or juvenile, or both, I assure you the series is neither.

Here’s the official blurb for ON THE SCENT:

Hannah Dawson has a big problem: she’s just become the unexpected owner of a snarky cat, a loveable but not-so-bright dog… and their $10 million fortune!

Which would be awesome if it hadn’t made her the target of every wacko in the metro Atlanta area. Now Hannah and her famous pets need protecting. And there’s only one man who can help them…

Enter Zachary Collins: ex-TV star of ‘The Psychic Detective’ and street-wise private investigator – all 6 foot blue-eyed gorgeousness!

Only Zach’s got secrets of his own… not least that he finds Hannah, his client, irresistibly hot. The more time he spends keeping her out of harm’s way, the more he’s tempted to give in to the attraction and break all his own rules.

The Spymistress

NOW AVAILABLE: The Spymistress

NOW AVAILABLE: The Spymistress

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini is back with another enthralling historical novel set during the Civil War era, this time inspired by the life of “a true Union woman as true as steel” who risked everything by caring for Union prisoners of war—and stealing Confederate secrets.

  • Hardcover: 368 pages
  • Publisher: Dutton Adult (October 1, 2013)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0525953620
  • ISBN-13: 978-0525953623

Born to slave-holding aristocracy in Richmond, Virginia, and educated by Northern Quakers, Elizabeth Van Lew was a paradox of her time. When her native state seceded in April 1861, Van Lew’s convictions compelled her to defy the new Confederate regime. Pledging her loyalty to the Lincoln White House, her courage would never waver, even as her wartime actions threatened not only her reputation, but also her life.

Van Lew’s skills in gathering military intelligence were unparalleled. She helped to construct the Richmond Underground and orchestrated escapes from the infamous Confederate Libby Prison under the guise of humanitarian aid. Her spy ring’s reach was vast, from clerks in the Confederate War and Navy Departments to the very home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Although Van Lew was inducted posthumously into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame, the astonishing scope of her achievements has never been widely known. In Chiaverini’s riveting tale of high-stakes espionage, a great heroine of the Civil War finally gets her due.

[Contemporary Suspense/Mystery]

{Darcy Farthing novel}

Where did you grow up and was reading and writing a part of your life? Who were your earliest influences and why?

Arleen: I was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, but my parents moved us to the U.S. when I was very small.  I spent my childhood in Concord, NH and then moved out west as a teenager.  As a child, I can’t remember a time when I did not read books, from Dr. Seuss to Treasure Island to The Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew.  In the fourth grade I ironically won a school essay contest on the topic of “Why I am happy to be an American.”  That was the year I became a naturalized citizen.  That is really the only writing I recall, until I started working on my high school newspaper.

I always loved books and began reading “grown up” fiction at an early age.  I remember sitting in the back yard tree house at about the age of 14 with a volume of E.A. Poe’s work and falling in love with the idea of writing novels.  In high school I decided I wanted to be a journalist, but my life did not go in that direction, exactly. For more than twenty years, I wrote extensively on decidedly non-fiction topics as a GAO analyst preparing reports for the U.S. Congress. Even though I did not become an author, I never gave up the dream of writing a novel some day, and I guess I am now living that dream.

 Why do you write?

Arleen: I think I write because I love fiction and am fascinated with the process, particularly with how the imagination works almost automatically to bring out the stories.  I love fiction so much that I want to be a part of the literary world.  I have heard authors say they write because they have to, but I can’t say that about myself.  It is a challenge and something I know I can spend the rest of my life working at and improving, and it is great fun. That being said, I believe that my GAO “investigative reporting” experience equipped me to delve into unusual topics and I enjoy the research that is necessary to build a foundation based on fact.

      Who is Darcy Farthing?

Arleen: Darcy is a positive but flawed character, who starts out with a dark secret that has interfered with her ability to form lasting relationships.  She is a 40ish tall blond beauty with striking blue eyes and her physical fitness and appearance are extremely important to her.  However, she is also very smart with a masters in biochemistry and an acute interest in understanding the physical world.  She is a pragmatic scientist at heart and has decided that she is an atheist, but the coincidences and unlikely events in her life beginning with the first book and moving through the stories, have made her question her non-belief philosophy. Throughout the series she continues to grow with these concepts.

How did your cruise ship crime novels come about?

Arleen: Alternate Currents is my first novel that has no cruising in it at all. But about five years ago when I finally decided to try writing a novel, I literally asked my self what I knew about that would make an interesting story.  I had retired from the GAO and my husband and I were taking cruises all over the world.  It just seemed natural to use my government experience with the travel and cruising to begin writing.  I soon realized there was a very real world issue with crime on cruise ships and I make that a continuing theme.  We still cruise and I have book signings onboard while I’m working on a book.  The next book in the series will take place on a ship in the South Pacific.

What do you feel the allure of Contemporary Suspense is to readers today?

Arleen: This is a very interesting question. For me, I like to read books that have a basis in reality so that I feel as if I am learning something. It is a wonderful escape to read a book whose mystery and suspense grabs and holds the reader. We are bombarded with so much bad news in the real world, that it seems a little odd to want to read more of it in fiction. I think that as communication, technology, and access to information become more complex, writers are challenged to write fiction at that same level, and maybe this in turn challenges readers to raise their level of understanding.

What do you hope to achieve with your books?

Arleen: I want to improve as a writer and would really like to have some commercial success.  I would love to recoup my considerable investment in publishing and marketing.  If that does not happen, I will still be happy with the satisfaction of the process and having a “legacy” of books out there.

ALTERNATE CURRENTSAuthor Darcy Farthing is living in Washington, DC with her fiancé, Mick Clayton. They are enjoying a much needed respite from trauma and crime fighting, while preparing for a wedding and a romantic cruise. Everything changes when an alarming phone call halts their plans. A good friend, Charlie Scott, has mysteriously disappeared—the apparent victim of an abduction.

Against Mick’s wishes, on an impulse, and without much thought of consequences, Darcy flies to Seattle to help Charlie’s partner, Don and their daughter, Penelope, cope with the loss. She is worried about Mick’s negative attitude about the couple and worries that he is prejudiced towards her friends. As a result, she finds herself reevaluating the direction of her personal and professional life.

Soon after her arrival in Seattle, she becomes immersed in the unfamiliar world of domestic partnerships, birth surrogates, and assisted reproductive technology. Don and Charlie, who became unlikely heroes in the first novel in this series, Currents Deep and Deadly, have their lives turned upside down by elusive kidnappers with no apparent motive. At the same time, their well-intentioned decision to pay a surrogate to bear their daughter for them turns into a nightmare, when the biological mother returns after eight years, claiming that Don and Charlie are not Penelope’s fathers as they believed, and she wants her child back. This revelation sets in motion a series of tragic events that threatens to destroy a parent-child bond, and worse.

Before the police and FBI are able to solve Charlie’s kidnapping, an even more devastating case materializes when Penelope also vanishes. The FBI, and Seattle police detectives, frantically look for clues. In the process, they implicate a local anti-gay organization and its leader, two local business owners who are being harassed by anti-gay demonstrators, a flamboyant stalker who is obsessed with Don, and the birth mother herself. There is no hard evidence against any of the suspects and the leads are curtailed when two of them are murdered. The authorities are no closer to finding Penelope, and now worry that she has been abducted by a vicious killer.

In the midst of turmoil surrounding Penelope’s birth status and abduction, true to her nature, Darcy tries to help her friends. When she ventures into the midst of the case by conducting a freelance interview with a local clergyman, she is nearly killed in a vicious attack by an unknown assailant. Mick rushes to her side and soon overcomes his reluctance to get involved with Don and Charlie’s plight. Together they try to gather information to help solve the case. Before the hostility ends, Don also becomes a victim and then a hero, and Mick must fight an unbalanced killer intent on revenge.

[Historical Romance]

So without further ado, set back and enjoy your visit with Anne!!

Once She Was Tempted

MBA&M: Good morning, Anne, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More and congratulations on your latest release, “Once She Was Tempted”! For those readers who do not know you, please tell us a little about Anne Barton?

AB: Good morning, and thanks so much for having me! My favorite pastimes are reading, dreaming, and writing.  Growing up, I read mostly fairytales, mythology, and fantasy, but when I discovered historical romance, I knew it was the genre for me. I live in a quiet suburb of Maryland with my husband and our three teenagers. Our house has no shortage of laundry or eye-rolling!

MBA&M: What is your inspiration for writing Historical Romance during the Regency period?

AB: I remember reading Pride and Prejudice as freshman in high school and thinking that I never wanted to leave that world. Now I don’t have to! I also spent a semester in and around London during college. All the quaint inns, majestic castles, and unique museums sold me on the Regency period even more.

MBA&M: How many books will be in the “Honeycote” series?

to all the rakes I loved beforeAB: There are a total of four books planned, featuring the two sets of sisters. I’m working on the third book right now (which stars Olivia, the duke’s sister) and I’m very excited about it! There’s also a shorter, sexy Honeycote novella that released in September called TO ALL THE RAKES I’VE LOVED BEFORE.

MBA&M: Which character in “Once She Was Tempted” was your favorite to write? Why?

AB: The hero, Ben, was so much fun. He’s a a hot, tortured hero with a wry sense of humor. And he doesn’t care what anybody thinks, so he’ll say or do anything. He blurts out the things that most of us are thinking but are too polite to say. Did I mention he’s hot?

once she was temptedMBA&M: The hero/heroine in “Once She Was Tempted” have secrets of their own, but what was your reasoning or inspiration behind writing a story where the heroine did something so outrageous as to pose nude, for not one but two portraits?

AB: Can I plead the fifth? Just kidding! The portraits Daphne posed for were very scandalous, but she’s not entirely nude in them—much to Ben’s regret. Also, she had an excellent reason for risking her reputation in that way.

I liked the idea because I think most of us can relate to the fear that something very personal might be made public. Especially now in the internet age—it seems public humiliation is only a mouse click away.

MBA&M: Let’s talk secondary characters, they so help to carry the story along, who was your favorite and will we ever see them with a story was their own?

AB: I adore Lady Olivia Sherbourne, the Duke’s sister. She’s loyal, dramatic, and daring to a fault. I’ve wanted to write her story for a while, and now I am. Let’s just say that Olivia is always up for an adventure. (SCANDALOUS SUMMER NIGHTS will be out next summer!)

MBA&M: Which character in “Once She Was Tempted” most represents your true character or is there one?

AB: I might be a little bit like Anabelle—she’s Daphne’s older sister, very protective and practical. She has lots of the typical first born character traits that I can relate to.

MBA&M: Now inquiring minds what to know, what’s next for you as a writer?

AB” For now, I’m happily at work on the next two books in the Honeycote series. And I had so much fun writing my first novella that I just might have to write another one. Each time I add a secondary character I start thinking that they should have their own story…

Excerpt: The Wicked Wallflower and The Kiss

“Are you saying that you are London’s Least Likely to fall for me?” Blake asked, towering over her. She stepped back until the bookshelves dug into her back. Blake placed one hand on either side of her, effectively boxing her in.

“That is exactly what I am saying,” she said. He was so arrogant. He set her nerves on edge. He played with her affections and her very grasp on reality. He made her heart race and he made her crave kisses that drove her to dizzying heights of desire. With a gaze from his darkened eyes, he made her dare to believe that she was desirable.

“And yet some say I am a master of seduction,” Blake replied in a low voice that sent a shiver shimmying up and down her spine.

“And yet here I am, hardly seduced,” Emma replied. Breathlessly. Dammit.

“We can fix that,” Blake murmured, tracing a fingertip along the edge of her bodice and along the swells of her breasts. She fought back a sigh and tried valiantly to recall why it was so imperative that she not be seduced.

Question: What’s your favorite real or fictional romantic scene in a library?

Maya Rodale’s captivating new series introduces London’s Least Likely—three wallflowers who are about to become the toast of the ton

Lady Emma Avery has accidentally announced her engagement—to the most eligible man in England. As soon as it’s discovered that Emma has never actually met the infamously attractive Duke of Ashbrooke, she’ll no longer be a wallflower; she’ll be a laughingstock. And then Ashbrooke does something Emma never expected. He plays along with her charade.

A temporary betrothal to the irreproachable Lady Avery could be just the thing to repair Ashbrooke’s tattered reputation. Seducing her is simply a bonus. And then Emma does what he never expected: she refuses his advances. It’s unprecedented. Inconceivable. Quite damnably alluring.

London’s Least Likely to Misbehave has aroused the curiosity—among other things—of London’s most notorious rogue. Now nothing will suffice but to uncover Emma’s wanton side and prove there’s nothing so satisfying as two perfect strangers…being perfectly scandalous together.

[Young Adult]

Welcome, Marijon!!! What a glorious cover!!

MBA&M: Please give our readers some insight into the wonderful world of Marijon Braden?

MARIJON: It actually is a pretty wonderful world.  I’m happily married with two daughters, a very spoiled dog and great friends. I’m writing full-time, which was what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid – it just took me a bit longer to get started than most people.  I have a great garden, love to cook – and eat – and read whatever I can, whenever I can.

MBA&M: What made you want to write Young Adult stories?

MARIJON: I actually had no interest in writing a Young Adult novel. I write adult romantic comedy under my real name – Marijon Braden is a pen name.  I had an idea for a rom-com that I really liked, but could never quite get past the second chapter.  My story was about a type-A 40-something business woman who gets drunk at a convention and wakes up in bed with a charming stranger who also happens to be a Fae prince. A far as he’s concerned, they’re married, and she spends most of the book trying to figure a way out.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Smoke,Wings, and Stone”?

MARIJON: I looked at my original idea and thought, what if I make the heroine a teen?  No sex, of course – she just says the wrong thing at the wrong time – which teen girls do all the time anyway – and she finds herself ‘bethrothed’.

MBA&M: What made you chose a “Prince of an ancient race of gargoyles” as your hero, setting and storyline?

MARIJON: My original hero was going to be a prince of the Fae.  When I started doing research on the Fae and faeries, I was overwhelmed – there’s so much out there!  Winter Queens and the Seelie court – I spent about three days trying to figure out where I could fit in my character into the existing mythology, and I was literally reduced to a quivering pile of blubber.  So, I decided I needed a different kind of hero.  Vampires and werewolves have sort of been done to death. I don’t remember exactly how I decided on gargoyles, but when I looked them up on Wikipedia, there was the original story is about the Bishop of Rouen.  Then – not much else.  I realized I could start there and make the rest of it up.  So, that’s what I did.  It was a lot of fun.

MBA&M: Why write about high school, the world of the gargoyles, and vampires?

MARIJON: I’ve always been a huge Buffy fan.  I loved the idea of dealing with high school issues and, oh yeah, saving the world.  So I took that idea (thank you, Joss Whedon) and went with it.   I wrote about two sisters, both in high school, who have to deal with an unexpected reality – gargoyles exist, vampires exist, magic exists – while still trying to figure out all the things that most teen-age girls are dealing with. I do give Buffy the credit – there’s a reference to the ‘Scooby gang.’

MBA&M: What a beautiful cover, by the way! Which character was the most challenging to write?

MARIJON: Thanks!  Renu Sharma did the cover – amazing job!  I’m so happy with it.

Writing the boys, Kevin and Ethan, was hard.  I have girls, and I have no idea how teen boys think (does anyone?).  Since Luc was essentially a fairy-tale kind of character, I felt more comfortable writing him.  But I wanted Kevin and Ethan to be ‘real’ boys.  I kept asking my daughter – ‘would a guy say/do this?”

MBA&M: What was your favorite scene to write in “Smoke,Wings and Stone”?Why?

MARIJON: I’d never written an action scene before.  There are not a lot of car chases in romantic comedy!  The scene where Luc is driving and they’re being chased by vampires – that was great fun.  I was very careful about how I wrote it. I could see it in my head like a movie.  I wanted to be sure it was written so that the reader could know exactly what was happening.

MBA&M: What can readers expect to see next for you?

MARIJON: I’m working on the second book in the world of Smoke, Wings and Stone.  I’m also hoping to get out a few shorts about some of the secondary characters – Deanne, for one.

MBA&M: Do you have any regrets as an author and what advise would you give any aspiring writers?

MARIJON: There’s a huge learning curve, especially if you’re self-pubbed.  The first few things I put out there were not professionally edited, and that really came back to bite me in the butt.  It is impossible to edit your own work – I don’t care how good you think you are.  Invest in an editor.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where they may find “Smoke,Wings and Stone” and where to connect with you?

MARIJON: My website is, and there’s some really cool stuff there – character bios, and beautiful artwork.  If you’re interested in purchasing, Smoke, Wings and Stone is available everywhere!

Thank you, Marijon for spending time with us and our readers!

Carrie Fleming thought she was doing a good deed. When a charming Frenchman claiming to be a prince crashed the wedding she was working, all she wanted to do was make sure he didn’t get into any trouble. And since he seemed infatuated with
her older sister, Sara, it just made sense to ask Sara to help.
Sara Fleming just wanted to make it through her senior year and get into a great music school. She didn’t care about friends or boys or any of the other distractions of high school. And she certainly didn’t want anything to do with some guy who claimed to be a prince, sworn to protect the world from evil, no matter how romantic it sounded.
But -

He wasn’t an ordinary prince.
He wasn’t fighting an ordinary evil.
And Carrie and Sara were about to step into a world they could
barely imagine…

A bit about the author…..

Marijon was born and raised in New Jersey, which may help to explain her attitude towards charlatans and idiots. She started writing stories at an early age, her first literary influences being Walter Farley, author of the ‘Black Stallion’ series, and Carolyn Keene, of ‘Nancy Drew’ fame. That’s probably why her earliest efforts involved a young girl detective who solved crime on horseback. She had a very happy childhood, did well in school, and was a fairly obedient daughter until she went away to college. The original plan was to major in journalism. She wrote for the college paper until she realized that wasn’t the kind of writing she wanted to do when she grew up. So she switched to education. That was not, perhaps, the smartest move. Then, life happened. Jobs, rent, husband, baby, another husband, another baby, until she found herself a stay-at-home mom, about to chew her foot off if she had to watch one more episode of ‘Barney.’ So, she started to write again. She still lives in New Jersey with her husband, daughter, two cats and a very spoiled cocker spaniel. Her older daughter is off in Oregon, fighting the good fight for the homeless. She loves to cook – and eat – and plays RPG games on her Xbox when she needs to decompress (Skyrim alone cost her months of her life). During the past few years, she has lost, and tragically found again, the same twenty pounds. Life is all about trying, failing, and trying harder. She writes in her downstairs office, surrounded by her growing collection of gargoyles. Smoke, Wings and Stone in her first YA novel. Marijon Braden is the pen name for Dee Ernst, who writes adult romantic comedy, and has lived an almost identical life.
