Growing up as a small town Canadian girl, there wasn’t much to do but ride your bike, hang out with friends on the beach and daydream. I always wanted to write but never dreamed it was something I could do as a career. I love to travel and fell in love with the sheep covered hillside, old castles and romantic history of Scotland and England. I dream about waking up in Tuscany and touring small town shops in the south of France with my husband, of placing my toes in the ocean and experiencing history first hand. As a mother with three daughters, I’m learning that teaching them to pursue their dreams is a lasting legacy. I love to wake up to the Rocky Mountains, will forever enjoy the taste of coffee and chocolate and can’t imagine the day when a story doesn’t unfold in my heart. Living a life with passion and pursuing dreams is a life well lived.

[ Mystery]

The Vintage Club

MBA&M: Darin, please tell our readers a few tidbits about yourself?

DARIN: I am a practicing patent attorney, helping to protect products from well-known companies like Western Union, Trek, and Boppy, in addition to start-up companies with innovating technologies ranging from heart pumps to smart phones.

I’ve been married for twenty years to my wife, Robin, and we have four children ranging in age from 12 to 21. We currently live in the Denver area.

I love anything outdoors. I participate in triathlons, ski (water and snow), fly fish, and play tennis and golf.  I love the Rocky Mountains and spend a few weeks each summer backpacking in where few people ever visit.  If I can get away with it, I’ll download an audiobook on my iPod and listen to a good book while I’m at it.

MBA&M: What was the challenges in writing “The Vintage Club”?

DARIN: One of the challenges was how to create a story where I integrated a legend about a wine that can make you live forever with modern technology that could be used to scientifically verify whether this is possible.

In a similar vein, I wanted to tell a story about how the wine symbolizes what it takes to live an eternal life.

On top of all this, I needed a character who struggles with his human frailties so that he could in a personal way learn what the legend of the wine really represents.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write a story about some the world’s wealthiest men, wine elixir, eternal life, and murder?

DARIN: Ever since I was introduced to Joseph Campbell and his lectures on mythology, I have been fascinated with stories of elixirs and eternal life. He mentioned that his favorite place in the word was a cathedral in Chartres, France because of all the stained glass windows depicting these ancient legends.

So, several years ago when I was in Paris, I took the train to this small town and spent the afternoon staring up at these beautiful scenes. It was there I hatched the idea of a modern holy grail story. I chose a group of wealthy men to portray individuals who were looking for a literal elixir, hoping to find a way to increase their longevity, even if it meant murder. This was the perfect set up to contrast with the real meaning of the wine symbol which is that eternal life is not measured in terms of a length of time, but in terms of how you live. In other words, the kind of life you currently live can be eternal if you learn what creates that type of life. While the members of the Vintage Club are searching for a wine that can make you live longer, the real message is that what the wine represents can make you live eternally—right now.

MBA&M: What is next for you as a writer?

DARIN: In the immediate future, I’m going to be giving lectures and writing about the concepts found in The Vintage Club. However, more books will be coming.

And, I do plan to enjoy the moment. After spending years getting a book ready for publication, it’s nice to sit back a have a few months off.

MBA&M: Will “The Vintage Club” be a series, if so how many books and what’s next?

DARIN: It won’t be a series, but I’m hoping it will be part of a sort of trilogy. My next book will be about transcendence, and after that there will be a book about endless energy.  Both will be set up as thrillers.

MBA&M: Who do you feel was the greatest influence in your writing career?

DARIN: I’d say John Grisham. I was a first year law student when The Firm was released, and a group of my friends read it the first week instead of reading court decisions. I’ve read every one of his books since then.

MBA&M: Inquiring minds want to know, with the Christmas holidays fast approaching…what is one of your favorite memories? How do you and your family celebrate the holiday?

DARIN: Our family loves traditions, so every year we follow the same routine. We have a nice dinner with clam chowder on Christmas Eve, then read Christmas stories together by the fireplace. Before going to bed, everyone gets to open one gift. I’d love to say that we sleep in, but someone always seems to get up early and insist we rush in and open our presents. The rest of the day is usually spent figuring out how to put in batteries or assemble some contraption.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers where they may connect with you and where they may purchase your title?

DARIN: Information about The Vintage Club and my background can be found on my web site at ww.daringibby.com. My email is dg@daringibby.com.  The book may be purchased on line at most major bookstores.

Thanks, Darin, for spending time with us and our readers today! What a fascinating tale, wine, murder and mystery!

*Author’s website*

Can wine really make you live forever? Yes, if the grapes are an ancient varietal—or so the members of the Vintage Club believe. Made up of some of the world’s wealthiest industrial magnates, the club conducts secret scientific research to discover what has eluded humans throughout history: the elixir of life.

Their quest hits a snag when scientist Walter Trudell is murdered. The prime murder suspect is his godson Reggie Alexander, a patent attorney whom Trudell once saved from a life of poverty in northeast Washington, D.C. As soon as news of the murder spreads, Reggie goes into hiding—soon after his wife and son disappear.

After being chased by mysterious assailants, beaten unconscious, and planted with a bug, Reggie must come to grips with his own private demons while figuring out how to save his family. The Vintage Club is a thriller that both explores the ancient Christian symbolism of wine and imagines ways that modern nanotechnology could be used to discover the fountain of youth.

Why Book Covers are So Important — by Tori L. Ridgewood

I had this discussion just the other day with a group of students, mainly reluctant readers in their mid-teens. Whether someone is an avid devourer of books (like myself) or someone who claims to have never read a book outside of a classroom, the cover can sometimes make all the difference between that decision to open it to the first page, and leaving it on the shelf.

Most of us have heard the old phrase, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” And yet that opening image has to convey enough truth about the story within to capture the interest of the target audience, honestly but with a hook. And many genres are considered to have a certain formula to follow with regard to the mise-en-scene of the image: the words “romance novel” conjure up visions of bared-breasted, well-muscled men clasping scantily-clad damsels before romantic settings such as fireplaces, sunset seas, castles, or silken sheets on a four-poster bed; dark shadows and streetlights, fedoras and sidewalks, guns and blood are the stuff of mysteries and crime novels; fangs and fur immediately call to mind the paranormal. These visual cues are absolutely significant in the marketing of the novel as a product. We read them as thoroughly as we do the blurbs on the back, looking for the symbols that will identify the elements most attractive to our interests.

Cover choices, therefore, make it easier for a reader to find something for a quick weekend getaway, a thorough literary experience, or a respectable gift. Just walk through your local bookstore, and notice where your eyes are lingering, and where they skim — more often than not, it’s on the pictures before the text, unless it’s a book that has no picture at all on the cover, such as the original jacket on The Road by Cormac McCarthy. And that would be a conscious choice by the writer and publisher, deliberately revealing that the book is about a stark, essential landscape rather than a contrived fantasy.

So how do you go about choosing a just-right cover?

For traditionally published writers, most companies have on staff a talented cover artist, like Caroline Andrus at Melange Books. The job of the cover artist is to look over the information the writer provides about the book — the tone, the genre, recommended colour schemes, key facts about the main characters, setting, and plot, and the detailed summary — and come up with a likely combination of images that will effectively represent the story. It’s not an easy task, particularly if an image desired by both the writer and the artist isn’t available for some reason. Working successfully with a cover artist means having excellent communication skills, being able to negotiate, and having an open mind.

Independent writers have the freedom to develop their covers as they choose. They can hire artists — both graphic and using the traditional mediums in conjunction with photography and scanning technology. Indies and cover artists can both access numerous websites with stock photo images and models available for purchase. There are also pre-made cover images available, with fill-in-the-blank title, author, and blurb text spaces. The tricky part is finding the right combination of colour, mood, model, and setting to match the book, as well as understanding the use of space for aesthetics so the cover looks professionally balanced rather than crowded, inadequate, or badly photoshopped. When these three problems occur, the book screams “Beware — possible bad writing!” to even a conscientious reader who doesn’t want to judge by the cover alone.

There is very little worse in the experience of reading than picking up a book with the expectation of being given a unique story, and discovering that the cover had little or no connection to the elements of the story. It’s like buying a box of chocolates and finding cheap potato chips inside. No-one wants to feel like the book was a mistake to read, a waste of time, or that someone trickery was involved in the purchase. As writers, we’re putting ourselves out there with our words in a very vulnerable way — suggesting that the book is anything other than what it is is not only a disservice to the reader, it doesn’t do justice to the story that we’ve committed to telling. There is a difference between being artistic, poetic, and avant-garde, and false advertising.

So when it comes to developing the cover for your next release, whether it’s with the help of a trained cover artist or on your own, don’t rush the process. Be true to your story, aware of the expectations of the genre as a means of communicating with a wide range of consumers. Your cover will be your product image. Choose close friends with whom to share the initial renderings, and ask their opinions. Be prepared for a bit of an emotional ride. And in the end, enjoy the moment. The cover is the final piece of the puzzle coming together in your creative project. Once you find the right one, it’s immensely satisfying to see that representation in place. Order a poster-sized print and have it framed. Put the cover image on mugs, keyrings, and pens. It’s the first thing the reader will see, the picture they’ll gaze at in wonder and reflection after the last page, and what they’ll be sharing with their friends. Make it something you’ll be proud to share, too.

About the author….

After her first heartbreak, Tori found solace in two things: reading romance novels and listening to an after-dark radio program called Lovers and Other Strangers. Throughout the summer and fall of 1990, the new kid in town found reading fiction and writing her own short stories gave her a much needed creative outlet. Determined to become a published author, Tori amassed stacks of notebooks and boxes of filed-away stories, most only half-finished before another idea would overtake her and demand to be written down. Then, while on parental leave with her second baby, one story formed and refused to be packed away. Between teaching full-time, parenting, and life in general, it would take almost seven years before the first novel in her first trilogy would be completed. In the process, Tori finally found her stride as a writer.

At present, on her off-time, Tori not only enjoys reading, but also listening to an eclectic mix of music as she walks the family dog (Skittles), attempts to turn her thumb green, or makes needlework gifts for her friends and family members. She loves to travel, collect and make miniature furniture, and a good cup of tea during a thunderstorm or a blizzard. Under it all, she is always intrigued by history, the supernatural, vampire and shapeshifter mythology, romance, and other dangers.

Synopsis of book: *From the publisher and/or publicist*

A sonnet is penned and, lo, the Conspiracy Kid Fan Club is born. Beware. To read this sonnet is to join the Club. Membership is automatic and irreversible.

This is the story of the earliest unwitting Conspiracy Kid Fan Club members: Edwin Mars (poet), Joe Claude (billionaire), Walter Cornelius (werewolf), Muriel Cohen (chef), Ewan Hoozarmi (artist), to name but a few.

Where to buy:

All good bookstores.

What is The Conspiracy Kid about?

Well, yes, let’s get right down to it. Never mind the niceties. Are you sure you wouldn’t like a cup of tea? Gin? Champagne? How about a sandwich? No? Ok, The Conspiracy Kid tells the story, as it says in the blurb, of the earliest unwitting members of the Conspiracy Kid Fan Club. It’s the story of a friendship between a semi-fictional poet, Edwin Mars, and Joe Claude, the bereaved billionaire. How is he bereaved? His daughter died. It was a ketamine disaster. Edwin’s son, Richard, opens a restaurant – Red, White & Blues. Joe Claude reads a review and goes and that’s how they meet. There’s loads of characters. It’s like a soap, a literary soap. People often say to me, wouldn’t it make a great movie – but if it had to be anything, I would like it to be a soap opera. On the other hand, you know what, there’s a character in Kurt Anderen’s excellent novel, Turn of the Century, who buys up the rights to books he likes, so that they can’t be turned into movies. I have considerable sympathy with that point of view. Movies of novels we love are almost always awful. Discuss ……..

What / who inspires you to write?

Life. Awful awesome – glorious ghastly – beautiful beastly – horrible hilarious ……… life. People. Trying to make sense of them. Trying to make sense of myself. Telling a story, to entertain myself, to entertain you.  When it goes well, it’s an intense and engrossing process. It’s a happy addiction. Flaubert, who had a bit of a way with words, said: “Writing is a dog’s life, but it’s the only life worth living.” I’m with Gustave on this.

E P Rose LRWhat do you need in order to be able to write?

A pencil. I used to do the martini thing. To paraphrase Dorothy Parker: After one – I think that I might. After two – I think that I’m able. After three – Oh yes, I can write! After four, I’m under the table. It doesn’t work. Sobriety and silence. That’s what I need. That does the trick.

If Hollywood decided to make a movie about your life – who would you want to play you?

Groucho Marx.

What advice can you give to other writers?

I don’t think that any writer worth his or her salt ever listened to any advice from anyone. Advice is the kiss of death. There are no rules. There are no guidelines. There is just a preparedness to submit to the obsession. Ignore everyone. Just go away and write.

What is the most challenging part of being a writer?

Staying awake.

What are you currently reading?

I have just finished reading El Narco – The Bloody Rise of the Mexican Drug Cartels – by Ioan Grillo. Research for the new book. Unbelievable. You simply could not make this stuff up. And I am about to start reading The Genius of the Beast: A Radical revision of Capitalism by Howard Bloom. Bloom’s book, Global Brain: The Evolution of Mass Mind from the Big Bang to the 21st Century is one of the most interesting and stimulating books I’ve ever read. I’m really looking forward to this new (to me) one, which, apparently, is brimming with optimism and hope for the future of the human race. I like a bit of optimism. I am a professional optimist. I think that optimism is a duty – optimism tinged with a dash of clinical gloom.

If you’re not writing – what do you love to do?

“I used to play water polo, but the horses kept drowning under me.” No, of course not really. That’s my favourite line from Some Like It Hot, a film of exquisite perfection. I like to cook and swim and play golf, but not at the same time.

If you hadn’t made it as a published novelist – what would you have done instead?

If I’d thought of it earlier, I would have become a professional golfer. Fortunately, for Tiger Woods and his cronies, I left it too late.

Describe your perfect day?

Sex. Breakfast. Walk dog. No, wait a minute, this is a fantasy – someone else can walk the dog. Write three perfect pages. Swim. Lunch. Sex. Siesta. Golf. Second siesta.  Sex before supper? No, can’t you see I’m busy playing Candy Crush? Supper with friends, involving several gallons of the finest pinot noir. Sex after supper? Oh, if you insist. Goodness me, what a day, I’m exhausted. Goodnight.

What was your first book, ‘Beyond the Valley of Sex and Shopping’ about?

Beyond is about what you find “Beyond the Valley of Sex and Shopping” – death, divorce, prison, bankruptcy, boredom, remorse, regret, redemption. So, obviously, it’s a comedy. Beyond is a miniature middle-class saga, spanning 30 years of London life, which tells the story of a brother and sister, one of whom lives and one of whom dies. Susan Perry falls in love with and marries Victor Abrahams, a more than somewhat conflicted and muscle-bound writer of unreadable novels. George Perry, her brother, makes a lot of money and manages to lose it all. As a matter of literary interest, it is a geographically displaced, anachronistic prequel to Chekov’s wonderful Uncle Vanya, from whom the cast of characters has been nicked. It seems to make people laugh and cry. I certainly laughed and cried while I was writing it.

What are you working on next?

It’s a story about a girl who gets hired by an extremely famous children’s story author to write his biography – and she ends up on a beach by the Pacific Ocean, being held hostage by a Mexican drug lord. Something along those lines. Working title:  “Mee and I”. I’m writing it in the first person. It’s really quite interesting being a girl. A touch of the Moll Flanders. Why not? If Daniel Defoe can do it ….. exactly. Now, how about that drink?

MBA&M: What do you feel the appeal of “The Deliverance” Trilogy will be to readers?

A.K. I know that when I pick up a book I am hoping for a couple of contradictory things to happen – and in the best books I get my needs met – even better yet – I get more than I realized was possible. First, I want an escape from the trials and the routine of my own life.  I want to “go somewhere different and experience something new”.  Secondly, and this is the greater challenge, I want to find out how others deal with life and perhaps, if possible, gain some new insight which will help me approach my life with a refreshed view.  Those two goals are what I strive to meet every time I sit down to write.  Frankly, I write for the same reason I reason I read.  I am looking for a bit of an escape and also for something to stir my soul…something to help me along as a human being to say – yeah, I understand that, and I can relate…even better…I understand better than I did before how humanity struggles and what we are looking for in our  personal quests.

I hope that duel goal will appeal to readers – to have a new experience and gain a new perspective.

MBA&M: Which was your favorite character to write?

A.K. Eoban is not the main character but he is a very central character in a lot of ways – the same way Sam is a central character in The Lord of the Rings.  Eoban is fully human, he loses his temper and even his manners occasionally, yet he has a large heart which will risk everything to protect those he loves – even those he doesn’t love particularly which kind of disgusts him, but he has to deal with his own weakness for doing the right thing even when he’d really rather not.  I have found very few perfect people in this world – we are so complicated! – but at the same time there are those heroic souls who’d really rather not be so heroic, but have to put up with the reality of who they are.  Since I’m a bit of a coward – I love his strength….and I wish I was more like him.

MBA&M: What was the hardest scene for you to write?

A.K. In Ishtar’s Redemption Chai is a very scary guy who wants to conquer so as to please his god and in that association he has assumed that his god will take care of him.  The scene when he comes face to face with Ishtar – a guy who has already had to face the false gods of his father and attempt to break free from them – he discovers that his god has no real power to save him and in that realization he must face death without that hope.  I think a lot of people avoid all thought of death because they have refused to deal with what happens next and it is a very frightening reality if you don’t know what you believe or if your belief is undermined.  Ishtar has come to a new faith and Chai isn’t there and the confrontation is a dramatic one.  I wanted to write something that expressed the truth of both faith and despair without trying to tie up everything into neat comfortable bundles.  I leave a lot to the reader to explore in their own faith even while offering the hope that holds me together on a daily basis.

MBA&M: Which do you feel as an author is the most challenging: to keep readers interested in your stories or to get your stories published?  I realized both can be frustrating and demanding?

A.K. So far I have had wonderful responses from readers, but not much luck from publishers.  I think part of the challenge is being willing to continually improve your craft and become a better writer no matter what happens.  I have just completed my sixth fiction book and I am hoping that I can get a publisher interested…but it is sometimes a matter of timing and luck as well as skill.  I figure that I will keep putting my books out there and let the readers decide if they are worth telling others about and remembering.

MBA&M: What one word best describes your “The Deliverance” trilogy?

A.K. Hope. The Deliverance Trilogy is all about overcoming the past, facing the trials of the present, and not letting worries about the future decide your fate.  Never give up hope.

How exciting it must be to have your stories published. We at MBA&M wish you all the best!

Ann Frailey of rural Fillmore, Illinois has published her first book entitled “The Road Goes Ever On A Christian Journey Through The Lord of the Rings” under the name A. K. Frailey. It is a reflection on the characteristics of the heroes and villains in the Tolkien classic and what influence virtue and vice have in our own modern world. Ann gives us a glimpse into the Christian ethos that was fundamental to Tolkien’s life and work.

ARAM, book one of The Deliverance Trilogy, her first fictional work is an adventure, romance and mystery all rolled into one with characters who struggle to survive in a hostile world while encountering evil from within and without. Three clans meet, clash, and battle out their differences before they come to know that they share a hidden past.

Ishtar’s Redemption – Trial by Fire, the second book in The Deliverance Trilogy is the sequel to ARAM and is now available on Amazon. Ishtar’s Redemption continues the story of the three clans introduced in ARAM and introduces new characters in the persons of Ishtar’s two sons, Ammee and Amil, and three new clans who come to aid those most in need. Evil sorcery, dangerous raides, and heroic rescues make Ishtar’s Redemption a story to remember.

Neb the Great – Shadows of the Past, the third book in The Deliverance Trilogy, was published in August 2013 and is now available on Amazon. For the sake of his son, Ishtar retells the compelling histories of the ancestors in the clans of the first and second books and at the same time the story moves into a hope filled future.

Ann has had articles published in the New Oxford Review and the Latin Mass. She won runner-up in fiction for ARAM in the 2011 Indie Publishing Contest. Both The Road Goes Ever On and ARAM have won the Catholic Writer’s Guild Seal of Approval for 2012. ARAM is up for the Catholic Writer’s Guild Arts and Letters Fiction Contest in 2013. All three of her books are available as e-books and paperbacks through AMAZON Books.

Ann has a B. S. in Elementary Education and is married to John Frailey who is also an educator. They have eight children and they homeschool while maintaining a mini-farm.

Ann devotes her time to writing books that align Christian thought with the lived adventure of becoming who we are called to be. She is a devoted wife and mother and enjoys spending her time with her family and friends on their mini-farm in rural Illinios.

Ann’s future fictional works will reflect on the journey-quest of humanity from our ancient past into the Middle Ages. Visit her website www.akfrailey.com often for her newest blog, updates on her writings, book signings, and public speaking events.

We at MBA&M/MBR wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

We would like to welcome today’s guest…..

The final fall season for riders at Horses for Healing begins this week. Horses for Healing is a therapeutic riding program that serves children with a variety of disabilities. The children I am assigned to work with, the deaf and hard-of-hearing kids, will be coming, excited to ride climb aboard a horse and ride. In our area, local schools participate by busing children with special needs once a week to the barn where they buckle on helmets and have a riding lesson in the indoor arena. After their lesson they will learn more horses and their care in a small classroom, then finish the morning with a snack.

Although I have taught children with hearing loss in various schools, teaching them about horses at the barn is especially interesting for all of us. There are no tests, no right or wrong answers, just sheer fun and recreation with their classmates and the band of horses waiting to patiently walk or trot around the arena.

Children like the ones I am eager to see were the inspiration for RICKI, my book about a deaf girl who loves horses.  In the book I incorporated experiences I had teaching  the kids in the classroom and leading them around the riding ring as they learned to ride on gentle horses. As a lifelong horsewoman, volunteering at the barn is a perfect fit for me. Most of the children have never seen a horse up close, so occasionally their first time in the saddle can be a bit scary. But most put their foot in the stirrup eagerly and all kids finish their first lesson free from fear, with big smiles. That is the reward of being at the barn – those happy faces looking down at me from “their” horse.

The signing skills I acquired after my hearing loss helps me to communicate with the children as I share my knowledge of horses. The kids seem to enjoy being with an adult they can relate to since most adults in their world are hearing.  I’ll meet a new class of youngsters since the group changes from year to year with some kids moving away and new children coming to school each new term. Their teacher told me last week I’ll love this bunch, but I already knew that. Each child captures a special place in my heart, and often we go on to make lasting friendships.

After writing RICKI, I received many messages on Facebook from former students who saw my page or were sent there by a friend who recognized my name. They are young adults now and it has been great fun to read about their lives. I’ve gotten their addresses and sent them copies of the book so they can enjoy the story and also see that it was written for them, with my thanks.

The young readers enjoying RICKI are mostly hearing. The letters and emails I have received indicate that horse lovers, whether youngsters or adults, are learning a bit about sign language, deaf culture, and what it means to be a deaf child while they enjoy a tale about horses and the great fun one can have riding.

About the Book:

On the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination comes a new edition of the extraordinary time-travel thriller first published in 2003, now extensively revised and re-edited, and with a new Afterword from the authors.

On November 22, 1963, just hours after President Kennedy’s assassination, Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President aboard Air Force One using JFK’s own Bible. Immediately afterward, the Bible disappeared. It has never been recovered. Today, its value would be beyond price.

In the year 2000, actress Cady Cuyler is recruited to return to 1963 for this Bible—while also discovering why her father disappeared in the same city, on the same tragic day. Finding frightening links between them will lead Cady to a far more perilous mission: to somehow prevent the President’s murder, with one unlikely ally: an ex-Marine named Lee Harvey Oswald.

Forward to Camelot: 50th Anniversary Edition brings together an unlikely trio: a gallant president, the young patriot who risks his own life to save him, and the woman who knows their future, who is desperate to save them both.
