Please help us welcome Isobel Rey to MBA&M, as today’s guest of the day!

Welcome, Isobel!! (hands waving)

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about Isobel Rey? For those of us who do not know you as a writer?

ISOBEL: Well this is my first novel and I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be published and to find out well received my first book is. I work in advertising in London. It’s an incredible job and I’m very lucky to be working in this world as two days are never the same. I meet all kinds of people from a huge variety of blue chip companies in all kinds of industries.
London is a very exciting city to live in and there’s a real vibe to the city and the people who live here. The people I meet are at the top of their game in whatever industry they are in and that brings a huge frisson to every meeting , when you realise that they are very demanding, but they have a right to be! Sometimes I have to pinch myself, to remind myself where I am.
A few people have asked me what made me choose this genre of fiction. In truth it was a bit of an accident. I was out with a friend one evening and she introduced to a publisher friend of hers. The three of us ended up having dinner and a lot of wine. I was talking about some of the crazy worlds that I get a window into from my job, and all the politics and sexual tension that go with them. The publisher asked me to tell her some stories of things I’d heard or seen. We’d had a lot of wine, so the stories came tumbling out! There’s a scene in my novel involving a one way mirror, many people have asked me how I made that up, and they’re shocked when I explain that I didn’t! That story was told to me by someone who was there.
I told the publisher how hard it can be for women to navigate this world when they are looking for love as there are so many ambitious and ruthless men out there who don’t want to get tied down.
So the publisher encouraged me to try my hand at writing a novel as I already had experience of writing advertising copy. So I sat down and put together a plot and characters, taken from people and situations I’d observed. I wrote three sample chapters and sent them to her, she sent them to her editor and two weeks later they offered me a publishing contract!

MBA&M: What made you wish to write a tale of an abusive boyfriend and the courage it takes for an abusive mate to leave that situation?

ISOBEL: I have been in this situation as have many of my friends and I think it’s much more common than women realize. When you are with a man who grinds down your confidence it happens slowly, like a drip, drip effect, eroding your personality and making you turn in on yourself. It may not be physical abuse but it creeps in, and you become diminished and cowed before you realize what’s happened. It makes a woman very wary of other men, and wary of her own desires and emotions. I wanted to show how hard it is for a woman like Alexia to find herself again when she’s thrown out of the frying pan into a roaring fire.

MBA&M: Why a Sports Agency setting?

ISOBEL: It’s a very glamorous world, with multi-million pound contracts at stake involving sports stars with egos bigger than their salaries. It’s a hugely exciting world but it’s full of sharks, and looking for love in this setting is always going to be tricky. I have seen many Alexias in similar companies, beautiful girls seen as a challenge by the womanizers. I wanted to show how hard it is to stay true to yourself when temptation is all around you.

MBA&M: If you could meet anyone in the Sports arena, who would it be and why?

ISOBEL: I have to say I would love to meet David Ginola. He’s a retired French Premiere League Soccer player and he would give George Clooney a run for his money in the ‘Sexiest man in the world’ competition!

MBA&M: Was your writing influenced by the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY storyline? If so why?

ISOBEL: Well I must be the only woman in the Western world who hasn’t read it! And that was deliberate as I thought it might influence what I was about to try and write. My publisher gave me some titles that she had published in this genre and encouraged me to read a variety of authors so I could get a feel for what works in this genre without losing my own writer’s voice.

Thank you, Isobel, for taking a few moments of your time to spend with us and our readers today!

The Accidental Duchess

Book Four of the Fairbourne Quartet
Jove Books
June 2014

When Lady Lydia Thornton is blackmailed over the shocking contents of a manuscript she once wrote, she must go to the most desperate of measures to raise the money to buy back the ill-considered prose: agreeing to an old wager posed by the arrogant, dangerous Duke of Penthurst. At least Penthurst is a man she wouldn’t mind fleecing—and she’s confident she’ll win.

Penthurst long ago concluded Lydia was a woman in search of ruinous adventure, but even he is surprised when she arrives at his house ready to bet her innocence against his ten thousand pounds—a wager he only proposed to warn her off gambling.

When she loses to a simple draw of the cards, Lydia is shocked. Now, her problems are twofold: a blackmailer determined to see her pay and a duke determined to tame her rebellious ways. One misstep and Lydia could find herself ruined—or bound to the seductive man who would make her his duchess.

She leaned close to avoid being heard by all the sensitive ears in the room. “We’re out of the literal and metaphorical woods. You can get blood from anyone. I thought drinking human blood was, like, worse than licking bat guano off a wizard’s shoe.”The softness of his laugh shimmied straight down her spine. Dear merciful Lord. “I don’t claim to understand.” His lips feathered against her ear. “In the cave, the pain abated when I drank from you.” He pushed closer, his breath soft and hot. “Nothing has eased it in a long time. No one. Whatever this… problem… is, drinking from you eased the pain. It’s the one thing I know for certain.”

Oh, hell. Only her blood? Talk about making a gal melt in the weirdest way possible. She wanted to be all snarky and make him beg or apologize or something, but f**kballs, that was the most beautiful thing ever. Besides, she wanted to ease his hurt more than she wanted to get even.

Alexia glanced around and pulled him into an empty room next to the nurse’s station. To be safe, she locked the door and pulled the curtain thingy. Two comfy chairs sat by the hospital bed. She tugged one close and offered her wrist. It seemed the fastest way, and this was urgent.

The strike of his fangs hardly surprised her this time. Much like a tattoo or a piercing, you got used to the pinch. Isabel had drunk from her a few times when they’d first become friends, but that had been different. That hadn’t been a two-hundred-and-whatever-pound vampire male in a desperate amount of pain.

Oh, holy… Wow.

The relief was amazing. Fireworks and dynamite. The pressure flowed out of her along with the blood. What rushed in to take its place, though, was a disturbing sense of rightness. In giving herself to him in a way she had never wanted to give to anyone. Somehow her other arm wound around his neck, and either he didn’t notice or he didn’t actually mind. It’s just the blood, like he said before.

But then his fingers crept into her hair. Her body slid down into the large, comfy chair. Lee pressed closer, on his knees now in front of her, her arm held aloft by his efforts as he lapped at her wrist. His tongue trailed down her arm to catch a wayward drip. On his knees with his long legs, Lee’s pelvis pressed against hers through their pants, his erection hard and thick and throwing off heat.

Alexia couldn’t stop herself from wrapping her legs around his waist and bringing him closer. Her hand grasped his free arm, which had moved from the chair to her leg. Their fingers laced together.

Lee’s groan vibrated against her wrist.

A knock sounded at the door.

About the Author

Elisabeth Staab still lives with her nose in a book and at least one foot in an imaginary world. She believes that all kinds of safe and sane love should be celebrated but she adores the fantasy-filled realm of paranormal romance the best. She lives in the Washington DC area with her family and one big scaredy cat, where she loves to spend time with good friends, go dancing, collect wacky coffee mugs from which to drink her favorite beverage, and sing off-key in her kitchen (when she isn’t making characters fall in love, that is).

Welcome, Kat!!

Years ago, after my husband and I drove to Alaska, I wrote the Romantic Suspense, MIDNIGHT SUN. A second journey generated the ideas for my three new AGAINST novels, the Brodie Brothers of Alaska, beginning with AGAINST THE WILD.
I love road trips, just heading out with no particular destination in mind, rolling along, encountering whatever life has to offer. It’s a panorama of new vistas, different smells, different tastes, different lifestyles. It’s dealing with flat tires and engine trouble, but also meeting people from every walk of life.
In the tiny town of Tok, we met a group of Viet Nam vets on a Holland America bus tour. At dusk each day, they held a flag-lowering ceremony, and because my husband had mentioned that the body of a friend, a serviceman killed in Vietnam, had just been recovered, he was asked to do the honors that night of lowering the American flag.
It was a special evening, the kind of experience that can make a road trip unforgettable.
Being that both of us love history, we wound up in Dawson City, the Yukon, way off the grid, the original destination for Klondike gold miners at the end of the nineteen century. A lot of the old buildings are still there, still being used, and the streets are still “paved” in dirt!
It’s a town right out of the wild and wooly West, a place that attracted authors like Robert Service and Jack London. Merely by chance, we met some of the locals and were asked to attend a special event held for authors at the Jack London cabin. We met readers from all over the country, as well as other authors.
People often ask me where I get the ideas for stories and I can tell you that a five-thousand mile driving trip on a two-lane road is stuffed with fodder for novels. People and places you couldn’t imagine come to life, filling your head with ideas for future books.
Was it romantic? It was far more grueling than romantic, but it was a fascinating adventure. And the people traveling with us, two other couples each with their own campers, made the trip a lot more fun.
So even if you aren’t a writer, if you open yourself up to new adventures, new places, new people, you’ll be amazed at what you will see.
I hope you enjoy AGAINST THE WILD, Dylan Brodie and Lane Bishop’s story, and that you’ll watch for Nick in AGAINST THE SKY, and Rafe in AGAINST THE TIDE. Till then, all best wishes and happy reading, Kat

Thank you, Kat, for spending time with us and our readers today! How interesting your trip to Alaska, made it to your book!

kat martinAbout the author…..

For New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin, a career in real estate led her down the road to romance.

Through real estate, Kat found her own perfect match–her husband, Western author Larry Jay Martin.

“We were on opposing sides of a transaction–I represented the seller and he represented the buyer,” Kat recalls.

A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he’d written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author!

“It was quite a romantic story,” she admits. “I’d still like to see it get published.” Then, after doing some editing for her future husband, she thought she’d try her own hand at writing.

Kat moved on to become the bestselling author of over fifty historical and contemporary romance novels. To date, 15 million copies of her books are in print, and she’s been published around the globe, including Germany, Norway, Sweden, China, Korea, Bulgaria, Russia, England, Estonia, Lithuania, South Africa, Italy, Poland, Thailand, Portugal, Turkey, The Slovak Republic, Spain, Argentina, Estonia, Czech Republic and Greece.

When she’s not writing, Kat also enjoys skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe. Currently, she’s busy writing her next book.

It’s been three years since Lane Bishop tragically lost her fiancé, and she’s finally ready to risk her heart on someone else. The hot look in Dylan Brodie’s eyes says he’s going to be that man.

As danger stalks his daughter and the woman he is coming to love, Dylan must risk everything to uncover the shocking truth.

Dylan Brodie is the new owner of an old fishing lodge in remote Eagle Bay, Alaska, a place he intends to rebuild as a home for himself and his eight-year old daughter.
Unfortunately, the crew working on the lodge are beginning to believe the old place is haunted. So does the sexy, redheaded interior designer, Lane Bishop, that Dylan has hired to help him with the extensive remodel.
But is the haunting real? Or is it something even more sinister?
When Lane and Dylan work to solve the mystery, they discover a legacy of injustice and murder. With danger stalking their every move, Dylan must risk everything to save Lane and his daughter and uncover the truth–before it’s too late.

Against the Wild
by Kat Martin

Emily hadn’t spoken a single audible phrase since her mother had abandoned her three years ago. Not a meaningful word since the night Mariah Brodie had run off with another man.

The low moaning of the wind awakened him. The old fishing lodge, constructed in the thirties, was built of hand-hewn logs, the chinking between them worn by time and weather, leaving spaces for the air to blow through. An eerie keening echoed inside the house, a chilling sound that sent shivers down Dylan’s spine.
Just the wind, he reminded himself. Nothing to do with stories of ghosts and hauntings. Just an inconvenience, nothing more.
Still, he had Emily to think of. Dylan Brodie swung his long legs to the side of the bed, shrugged into his heavy flannel robe, and padded barefoot down the hall toward his daughter’s bedroom.
The lodge he’d purchased earlier in the spring was big and sprawling, two stories high, with a separate family wing for the owner, another for the prestigious guests it had once hosted, back in its heyday in the thirties. The living room was big and open, exposing fourteen-inch logs in the ceiling. A massive river rock fireplace climbed one wall, a second, smaller version warmed the sitting room in the master suite.
Dylan had fallen in love with the place the moment he had seen it, perched on Eagle Bay like a guardian of the two hundred forested acres around it.
Old legends be damned. He didn’t believe in ghosts or any of the Indian myths he had heard. He’d waited years to find the perfect spot for his guided fishing and family vacation business, and this was the place.
The wind picked up as he moved down the hall, the air sliding over rough wood, whistling through the eves, the branches on the trees shifting eerily against the window panes. Dylan picked up his pace, worried the noise would frighten Emily, though so far his eight-year-old daughter seemed more at ease in the lodge than he was.
Frosted glass wall sconces dimly lit the passage as he walked along, original, not part of a remodel of the residential wing done a few years back, before the last owner moved out and left the area.
The four bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs on this side of the building weren’t fancy but they were livable while he worked on the rest of the lodge. The master suite had been updated, but it wasn’t the way he wanted it yet. Eventually, he would rebuild this section, as well, bring it all up to the four-star standard he’d had in mind when he had purchased the property.
Dylan paused at the door to Emily’s room, quietly turned the knob and eased it open. His daughter lay beneath the quilt that his housekeeper, Winifred Henry, had made for her as a Christmas gift, princesses and unicorns embroidered in puffy little pink and white squares, all hand-stitched to fit her youth-size four-poster bed.
His gaze went to the child. Emily had the same dark hair and blue eyes that marked her a Brodie, but her complexion was as pale as her mother’s. Unlike Mariah’s perfect patrician features, Emily’s mouth was a little too wide, her small nose freckled across the bridge.
She was awake, he saw, her eyes fixed on the antique rocker near the window. It was just her size, fashioned of oak and intricately carved. She loved the old chair that had been in the lodge when he bought it.
Emily never sat in it, but she was fascinated by the way the wind made it rock on its own. Dylan found it slightly eerie, the way it moved back and forth as if some invisible occupant sat in the little chair. She was watching it now, her lips curved in the faintest of smiles. She mumbled something he couldn’t quite hear and Dylan’s chest clamped down.
It hurt to watch his little girl, see her in the make-believe world she now lived in, forming silent phrases, nothing he could actually hear.
Emily hadn’t spoken a single audible phrase since her mother had abandoned her three years ago. Not a meaningful word since the night Mariah Brodie had run off with another man.
Dylan’s hand unconsciously fisted. Maybe he hadn’t been the husband Mariah wanted. Maybe he’d been too wrapped up in trying to make a life in the harsh Alaskan wilderness he loved. Maybe he hadn’t paid her enough attention.
Maybe he just hadn’t loved her enough.
Guilt slipped through him. He never should have married her. He should have known she would never be able to adjust to the life he lived here. Still, it didn’t excuse her cruel abandonment of their daughter. An abandonment Emily had not been able to cope with.
Dylan forced himself to walk into the bedroom. Emily’s eyes swung to his, but she didn’t smile, just stared at him in that penetrating way that made his stomach churn.
“Em, honey, are you okay?” She didn’t answer, as he knew she wouldn’t. “It’s just the wind. The lodge is old. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”
Emily’s gaze went to the window, where a lone pine branch shifted restlessly against the sill. Ignoring him as if he weren’t there, she snuggled back into her pillow and closed her eyes. She blamed him for the loss of her mother, he knew. It was the only explanation for why she had withdrawn from him so completely.
Tucking the quilt a little closer beneath her chin, he leaned down and kissed her cheek. The wind picked up as he walked out of the bedroom and eased the door closed. Emily was his to watch over and protect, his to care for and comfort. But he had lost his daughter three years ago.
When he had driven her mother away.

Hello Everyone!  Many thanks to WendyK and April for hosting me today.  To Love A Highlander, Scandalous Scots #1, releases tomorrow, Apr. 29th, and I’m delighted to celebrate at My Book Addiction and More. FINAL - To Love A Highlander

As one of the bastards born to the Stirling court, Sorley the Hawk has never known his mother or father. It’s a burning quest he has devoted himself to uncovering at any cost. But as a roguish warrior who serves at the pleasure of the King, his prowess-both on the battlefield and in his bedchamber-is legendary. So when a flame-haired Highland lass sneaks into his quarters with a tantalizing proposition, he can’t resist taking her up on her offer . . .

Lady Mirabelle MacLaren will do anything to keep from marrying her odious suitor, even sully her own good name. And who better to despoil her than his sworn enemy, the one they call “Hawk?” As they set about the enjoyable task of ruining her reputation, Hawk and Mirabelle soon learn that rebellion never tasted so sweet.

Mini-Excerpt from To Love A Highlander

Set-Up: Sorley and Mirabelle have met up in the castle chapel to discuss the finer points of the proposition she’s made him…

MiraFINAL - To Love A Highlanderbelle swallowed, unable to help herself. “You are a charmer.”

A slow smile curved Sorley’s lips. A darkly seductive smile, as unsettling as how he’d let his gaze slide oh-so-suggestively up and down her body. Yet his boldness made her pulse leap. It also warmed her in indecent places. She touched a hand to her breast, feeling both hot and dizzy despite the chill dampness of the chapel.

He stepped closer, giving her the distinct impression he’d pounce if she so much as blinked. “I am fond of women, aye.”

“So I have heard.” She kept her head raised, resisted the urge to wipe her palms against her cloak.

“Are you nervous?”

“I am relieved.” She spoke true, just not admitting she was indeed jittery. Her emotions were running higher than ever before.

She was also sharply aware of every ruggedly alluring inch of him. Including the oh-so-virile bulge she could see through the edges of his cloak. The glow of a wall sconce slanted right there, proving that he wasn’t just a tall, strapping man, powerfully-built and good-looking.

He was also just as well-lusted as the court ladies claimed.

Sorley the Hawk wanted her.

And he was already prepared to do exactly what she’d asked of him.

To Love A Highlander is more than just the first full-length book of my new Scandalous Scots series.  (Scandalous Scots launched in Dec. 2013 with my holiday e-novella, Once Upon A Highland Christmas.)  This story stands out as a book of firsts in my writing career, and that makes Sorley and Mirabelle’s tale extra-special for me.

I always visit My Book Addiction and More at release time, a tradition I love and enjoy so much.  For that reason, I save really special tidbits to share here.  Things not revealed anywhere else.  Today is no exception as I haven’t yet mentioned the ‘firsts’ associated with To Love A Highlander and Scandalous Scots.

Are you curious?

I hope so!  And I’ll not keep you waiting…

Scandalous Scots is my first series about heroes who are not chieftains.  Some readers may point out that Sir M of Bride of the Beast was not a laird or chieftain, but if you read his book, you’ll know he soon became one, within a very few pages of his story.  That isn’t so with Sorley the Hawk, hero of To Love A Highlander.  And it isn’t so with the other three heroes of the 4.5 book series.

These heroes are bastards, quite literally.  They’ve had a rough time of it, pasts that have been anything but privileged.  And they emerged greater men for these early hardships.  They’re the medieval equivalent of self-made men and they’re proud, bold, and roguish.  Women adore them and with good reason: they are incredible lovers!  But they aren’t lairds or chieftains.  They were born at the royal court of Stirling Castle.

And that brings me to another first…

To Love A Highlander is set at a real castle, Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s top historical landmarks.  Again, many readers will know that my popular MacKenzie series uses Eilean Donan Castle as a setting.  But I changed the name to Eilean Creag in the series.  In every book until now, I’ve created my own fictional castle settings.  Sure, I base these castles on real ones, or a combination of actual castles and strongholds that I know and love in Scotland.  But I’ve never written an actual, existing castle as a setting.  Until now.  The story wouldn’t have worked otherwise.  Readers can learn more about Stirling (and how I chose to write it) in my Author’s Note at the back of the book.

A - Stirling Castle View - Scotland Castle

Another first is that a few of the characters are actual historical personages.  Yes, I did this to a degree in my Highland Warriors trilogy.  But not to the extent I’ve used actual historical people in To Love A Highlander.  These  characters (associated with the royal court) appear in subsequent Scandalous Scots books and have an integral role in the stories.  I’ve never done that before.  My reason for avoiding this has been because, loving Scottish medieval history as much as I do, I love these people.  The real ones.  The men and women who lived and breathed and were just as real as you and I today.  I felt ‘unworthy’ to put words into their mouths, actions and physical movement to bodies long turned to dust.

I did not believe I could do them justice and had too much respect for them to risk portraying them poorly.

So I really had to wrestle with myself to put these people into the pages of To Love A Highlander.  When you meet them, I hope you’ll agree that I treated them well and with the honor and respect they deserve.

There are several other firsts, but I will only share one more.

A very special first: Little Heart, the stray kitten in To Love A Highlander.

All my books have animal characters, but the main ones are usually dogs.  I chose a feral kitten for this book because I learned of a wee feral kitten who was brutalized by playground bullies.  One boy was a hero, seizing the kitten so he could be rushed to a vet clinic.  The good souls there tried valiantly to save the kitten, but he died of his injuries several days later.

This kitten was called Little Heart, after the heart stitched onto his body bandaging.

A - Little Heart II

Little Heart’s tragedy upset me so much that I decided to put him into this story, giving him to the heroine, Mirabelle, and letting him enjoy the happy ending I so wish he’d found in real life.  To Love A Highlander is dedicated to the real Little Heart so that he is remembered always.  And I will be donating a portion of this book’s royalties to my favorite cat rescue organization, Alley Cat Allies.

I’m proudly old-fashioned, listen to classical and New Age music as I write, I live, breath, and dream medieval Scotland, and enjoy living quietly. Shabby chic suits me better than glitz and glam. Hate shopping except bookstores and thrift shops. I believe in Highland magic and love whimsy. I’m also convinced some people are born out of time and place, and am sure I’m one of them.

If I wasn’t writing, I’d be out in the field fighting for animal rights, rescuing stray cats and dogs, saving whales and seals, hugging trees, and going ghost-hunting, always searching for a time portal to sweep me out of this world and back to medieval Scotland.

Just One Kiss, romance novel by bestselling author Susan Mallery

Fool’s Gold book 10

He won’t hesitate to put his life on the line… but will he ever risk his heart?

Falling for Justice Garrett was a high point in Patience McGraw’s otherwise awkward adolescence. Even after he disappeared, Patience never forgot the boy who captured her heart. Now, he’s back in Fool’s Gold, California, and her passion for him is as strong as ever. But how can she trust that he won’t abandon her again—and her daughter, too?

When bodyguard Justice Garrett was a young man, witness protection brought him to this idyllic town and he never forgot its warmth, or the sweet beauty of his childhood friend. He’s returned to open a defense academy, and the Patience he once knew is all grown up. He can’t resist her smile, or her curves. But Justice’s past doesn’t make him husband, or father, material.

Patience and Justice think they’ll succumb to just one kiss… Then one more… Okay, just one night together. But they might learn that falling in love is beyond anyone’s control.

Anna is cursed–or gifted, depending on how you look at it–with the ability to find anyone or anything that is lost. So when folks start disappearing in the small town of Haven, Anna’s father, the sheriff, has to use her special skills as they begin to hunt for a killer.

But the killer isn’t exactly human. As Anna is pulled deeper into the secrets of Haven–a town that is truly cursed–she finds herself falling for two, equally mysterious boys. With the danger closing in, one of those boys may just turn out to be her savior. And the other? He could be a very big, very bad…beast.
