SOURCEBOOKS,LANDMARK AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS….
DORA LEVY MOSSANEN!!
Good morning Dora and welcome to My Book Addiction and More!!
D.L.M: Thanks for inviting me. I’m excited to spend some time with you.
MBA&M: Give our readers some insight into Dora Levy Mossanen?
D.L.M: I was born in Israel and moved to Iran when I was nine. I was forced to leave Iran, when Mohammad Reza Shah abandoned the country and Ayatollah Khomeini returned and established the Islamic Republic. I settled in California with my two young daughters, struggled to raise my kids and create a home in an entirely unfamiliar culture. I eventually decided to go back to school, intending to become a journalist. I had no idea that I’d become a writer one day. At the encouragement of one of my professor’s, to whom I owe big time, I applied to the USC Masters program in creative writing. My first novel, Harem, was my thesis for my masters.
MBA&M: What made you decide to write “THE LAST ROMANOV”?
D.L.M: I was fascinated by the decadent era of the last Romanovs that ended up
imploding. I wanted to discover how it was possible for such a powerful Imperial court with such unimaginable wealth to end up so tragically in a cellar in The House of Special Purpose. The idea to write this book blossomed in 1991, when the burned, acid-drenched bones of the last Romanovs were discovered after seventy-three-years. I began research and found every detail more intriguing than the other—Grigori Rasputin, the enigmatic wanderer, Alexei Nikolaevich, the hemophilic heir, Alexandra Feodorovna, the recluse Tsarina, who was disliked by the Russians and who believed in her husband’s “divine right to rule,” the indecisive Tsar Nicholas II, who was never comfortable in the role of the Tsar of all the Russias and who followed his wife’s advice to the detriment of the throne. I could go on and on, but a paragraph or two won’t do justice to an era that changed the political landscape of the time and affected each and every one of us in different ways. I hope I’ve succeeded to bring this to life in The Last Romanov.
MBA&M: What is some of your comfort foods?
D.L.M: Ah! Love this question. Right now, as I’m typing, I’m sitting in my big comfortable chair, my legs propped up on an ottoman, laptop on lap while enjoying my number one comfort food. Chocolate! It’s melting in my mouth, sweet and creamy, coating my tongue, seeping into my brain, telling me all is well in the world. Sometimes, when my mood needs an extra lift, I’d drive to my neighborhood bakery to enjoy a warm brioche straight out of the oven, slathered with butter and nutella. And late in the evenings, when my stomach has long forgotten dinner and is growling for extra comfort, creamy almond butter straight out of the jar does the trick. Calories be damn!
MBA&M: What where some challenges in writing “THE LAST ROMANOV “?
D.L.M: There were many challenges along the way. For one, it wasn’t easy to draw a coherent understanding of the constantly shifting political situation and series of revolutions that culminated in the fall of the Romanovs and rise of the Bolsheviks. But my greatest challenge came, when I had developed empathy, even love toward my charges. I am a Jewish writer; my father fought in the Israel War of Independence, my grandfather was a historian who wrote: The Comprehensive History of the Jews of Iran, yet here I was writing about the anti-Semite Romanovs. But I’m also a novelist and am aware of the power of imagination to penetrate history. So, I set to work. I invited my own emissary, the Jewish artist, Avram Bensheimer, to the artists’ salon in Alexander Palace. He became far more radical and vocal than I had expected. A passionate spokesman for his people. I can’t thank him enough.
MBA&M: Who was your favorite character in “THE LAST ROMANOV”? Why?
DLM: My favorite character, I’d say, is the opal-eyed Darya. I respect and admire her for her courage and tenacity. Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles she faced, she never gave up, did not lose hope or rest in her search for her beloved Alexei. The Creator of Miniatures, among some other favorites, is also a much-loved character. Her courage is very different from Darya’s. The Creator of Miniatures is painfully shy and keeps her emotions locked, but the stunningly beautiful miniatures she crafts project her feelings better than any words or actions could.
MBA&M: What do you believe is the appeal for this era/genre?
DLM: Decadence, power, love, magic, mysticism, wars and revolutions, a mad monk with great, mystical powers, and a tragic end that changed the political face of the world. The life story of the Romanovs encompasses all that and more. This adds up to a very appealing story indeed.
