MBA&M: What do you feel the appeal of “The Deliverance” Trilogy will be to readers?

A.K. I know that when I pick up a book I am hoping for a couple of contradictory things to happen – and in the best books I get my needs met – even better yet – I get more than I realized was possible. First, I want an escape from the trials and the routine of my own life.  I want to “go somewhere different and experience something new”.  Secondly, and this is the greater challenge, I want to find out how others deal with life and perhaps, if possible, gain some new insight which will help me approach my life with a refreshed view.  Those two goals are what I strive to meet every time I sit down to write.  Frankly, I write for the same reason I reason I read.  I am looking for a bit of an escape and also for something to stir my soul…something to help me along as a human being to say – yeah, I understand that, and I can relate…even better…I understand better than I did before how humanity struggles and what we are looking for in our  personal quests.

I hope that duel goal will appeal to readers – to have a new experience and gain a new perspective.

MBA&M: Which was your favorite character to write?

A.K. Eoban is not the main character but he is a very central character in a lot of ways – the same way Sam is a central character in The Lord of the Rings.  Eoban is fully human, he loses his temper and even his manners occasionally, yet he has a large heart which will risk everything to protect those he loves – even those he doesn’t love particularly which kind of disgusts him, but he has to deal with his own weakness for doing the right thing even when he’d really rather not.  I have found very few perfect people in this world – we are so complicated! – but at the same time there are those heroic souls who’d really rather not be so heroic, but have to put up with the reality of who they are.  Since I’m a bit of a coward – I love his strength….and I wish I was more like him.

MBA&M: What was the hardest scene for you to write?

A.K. In Ishtar’s Redemption Chai is a very scary guy who wants to conquer so as to please his god and in that association he has assumed that his god will take care of him.  The scene when he comes face to face with Ishtar – a guy who has already had to face the false gods of his father and attempt to break free from them – he discovers that his god has no real power to save him and in that realization he must face death without that hope.  I think a lot of people avoid all thought of death because they have refused to deal with what happens next and it is a very frightening reality if you don’t know what you believe or if your belief is undermined.  Ishtar has come to a new faith and Chai isn’t there and the confrontation is a dramatic one.  I wanted to write something that expressed the truth of both faith and despair without trying to tie up everything into neat comfortable bundles.  I leave a lot to the reader to explore in their own faith even while offering the hope that holds me together on a daily basis.

MBA&M: Which do you feel as an author is the most challenging: to keep readers interested in your stories or to get your stories published?  I realized both can be frustrating and demanding?

A.K. So far I have had wonderful responses from readers, but not much luck from publishers.  I think part of the challenge is being willing to continually improve your craft and become a better writer no matter what happens.  I have just completed my sixth fiction book and I am hoping that I can get a publisher interested…but it is sometimes a matter of timing and luck as well as skill.  I figure that I will keep putting my books out there and let the readers decide if they are worth telling others about and remembering.

MBA&M: What one word best describes your “The Deliverance” trilogy?

A.K. Hope. The Deliverance Trilogy is all about overcoming the past, facing the trials of the present, and not letting worries about the future decide your fate.  Never give up hope.

How exciting it must be to have your stories published. We at MBA&M wish you all the best!

Ann Frailey of rural Fillmore, Illinois has published her first book entitled “The Road Goes Ever On A Christian Journey Through The Lord of the Rings” under the name A. K. Frailey. It is a reflection on the characteristics of the heroes and villains in the Tolkien classic and what influence virtue and vice have in our own modern world. Ann gives us a glimpse into the Christian ethos that was fundamental to Tolkien’s life and work.

ARAM, book one of The Deliverance Trilogy, her first fictional work is an adventure, romance and mystery all rolled into one with characters who struggle to survive in a hostile world while encountering evil from within and without. Three clans meet, clash, and battle out their differences before they come to know that they share a hidden past.

Ishtar’s Redemption – Trial by Fire, the second book in The Deliverance Trilogy is the sequel to ARAM and is now available on Amazon. Ishtar’s Redemption continues the story of the three clans introduced in ARAM and introduces new characters in the persons of Ishtar’s two sons, Ammee and Amil, and three new clans who come to aid those most in need. Evil sorcery, dangerous raides, and heroic rescues make Ishtar’s Redemption a story to remember.

Neb the Great – Shadows of the Past, the third book in The Deliverance Trilogy, was published in August 2013 and is now available on Amazon. For the sake of his son, Ishtar retells the compelling histories of the ancestors in the clans of the first and second books and at the same time the story moves into a hope filled future.

Ann has had articles published in the New Oxford Review and the Latin Mass. She won runner-up in fiction for ARAM in the 2011 Indie Publishing Contest. Both The Road Goes Ever On and ARAM have won the Catholic Writer’s Guild Seal of Approval for 2012. ARAM is up for the Catholic Writer’s Guild Arts and Letters Fiction Contest in 2013. All three of her books are available as e-books and paperbacks through AMAZON Books.

Ann has a B. S. in Elementary Education and is married to John Frailey who is also an educator. They have eight children and they homeschool while maintaining a mini-farm.

Ann devotes her time to writing books that align Christian thought with the lived adventure of becoming who we are called to be. She is a devoted wife and mother and enjoys spending her time with her family and friends on their mini-farm in rural Illinios.

Ann’s future fictional works will reflect on the journey-quest of humanity from our ancient past into the Middle Ages. Visit her website www.akfrailey.com often for her newest blog, updates on her writings, book signings, and public speaking events.

We at MBA&M/MBR wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

MBA&M: Thank you, MaryLu for spending time with us and our readers today! What a great honor to have you with us! For those who may not know you, please give them some insight into the life of MaryLu Tyndall?

MARYLU: Thank you! I’m so happy to be here.  For those who don’t know me, I’m a cave-dwelling introvert, patriot, mother of six, the neighborhood cat-lady, tall ship enthusiast, friend of pirates and mermaids, obsessive compulsive control freak, lover of history, hopeless romantic, sword wielding princess-warrior of the King of Kings.   🙂

MBA&M: Please tell us what your inspiration behind writing the “Escape to Paradise” series?

MARYLU: Have you ever been bombarded by so many problems that all you wanted to do was run away and forget everything?  I think all of us have felt that way at one time or another. This series is based on that desire to run away from your problems and start over. Yet the story lines encompass so much more than that. I pitched the series as LOST meets Gone with the Wind. It’s about a group of people longing for a new life, essentially running away from God, yet finding out in the end that their problems came along on the journey with them! Not only that, but each of them discovers their pasts are inextricably linked by a supernatural Hand that brought them each to Brazil for an eternal purpose.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write a story about life after the Civil War, in a new colony in Brazil?

MARYLU: The history is fascinating! I have not run into a single person who knew about this event. For some reason, it seems to have been buried in our history books, yet close to 20,000 Southerners traveled to Brazil after the Civil War. Many more went out west and some to Mexico.  For me, I find the story of a people traveling to an unknown land and forging a life from the wilderness utterly fascinating. Even though my stories are fictional, I felt this was a history that needed to be told.

MBA&M: In “Elusive Hope”, Hayden is seeking revenge. While Magnolia is seeking a way out. Can you give us insight into these two characters?

MARYLU: Hayden is a mix between a bad boy and a charmer. He’s the man who walks into a room and draws every female eye, not just because he’s handsome, but because he has a mesmerizing charm and confidence about him that lures the female heart. But he’s not interested in women. His only interest is in enacting revenge on the man he believes orphaned him at a young age and left him to die on the street–his father–and in order to find him, Hayden had to become a con-man just like him.

Magnolia is a Southern Belle through and through, but a bad decision on her part cost her parents most of their fortune and Magnolia her reputation, and sent them to Brazil for a new start. Accustomed to opulence, she detests the barbarity of Brazil and longs to sail home to reunite with her fiance. Constantly berated by her overbearing father, she has been told that her only value is in her appearance.  Consequently, Magnolia suffers from a severe lack of confidence and an obsession with her looks.

MBA&M:  Now inquiring minds want to know or me rather..Did you visit Brazil to get your vivid descriptions for this setting?

MARYLU: I wish!  Unfortunately that was not in my budget.  However, thanks to the internet, there are plenty of vivid pictures, videos, and descriptions of that beautiful land. Plus, I used Google-Earth, which is the next best thing to traveling there myself!  I am amazed at how gorgeous Brazil is. They have everything from white sandy beaches to lush tropical jungles to snow-capped mountains. Some day I hope to go there on vacation.

MBA&M: I know you enjoy writing about pirates, will we ever get to see those dastardly pirates, again? If so when can we expect another pirate based story?I enjoy pirates by the way….

MARYLU: Absolutely!   In fact, I’m currently writing a sequel to my pirate series. (About Captain Merrick’s son!)  I’m very excited about the story. It’s set in Port Royal, Jamaica in 1692, right before an earthquake sinks most of the city into the sea. That’s all I can say about it for now, but I hope to release it in early to mid 2014.

MBA&M: I understand you may be on another new and grand adventure, can you give us any details?

MARYLU: Let’s just say that God is asking me to step out of the comfortable boat of traditional publishing and walk on the waves of managing my own career. I’m very excited about this new path in my life and know that whatever God has in store, it will be a grand adventure!

MBA&M: Besides, writing, thanks for your time and effort to write your wonderful stories by the way! What do you enjoy most in life?

MARYLU: My family, church, my cats, a good book, a great movie, gardening, chocolate and popcorn!

MBA&M: Who would you say is your favorite character in life and in fiction?

MARYLU: My favorite character in fiction. Hmm. . .can I have more than one?  Edmund Dantes from The Count of Monte Cristo,  The Scarlet Pimpernel in The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Peter Blood in Captain Blood

A few of my favorite characters in life: George Washington and Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Elusive Hope – Escape to Paradise Series Book Two

In a colony named New Hope, while their friends are seeking a Southern utopia. . . .

Hayden is seeking revenge. Relentlessly.

After years of all but selling his soul to track down his scoundrel of a father, Hayden Gale discovers his search must continue in South America, where his father is reported to be helping colonize Brazil.  Magnolia is seeking a way out. Desperately.

She’s in the jungles of Brazil against her will, but what choice does Magnolia Scott have? Her father insisted on uprooting their family to escape the uncertainty of Southern life after the Civil War. But how will she survive without all she holds dear—wealthy suitors, beautiful clothes, summer balls, and slaves waiting on her every whim? She vows to find a way to get back home—and attaches herself to handsome Hayden Gale.

As they journey toward Rio de Janeiro, they both seek to use the other for their own purposes. Deceptively. Falling in love was never part of their plans. . . .

Parents’ Role in YA Fiction

By Diana L. Sharples

I embarrass my daughter on a fairly regular basis. I tell her it’s my job as her mom. While that’s not exactly true—my job is to be a good mom, not to embarrass her—it’s true that my enthusiasm for the things she’s involved in has at times gotten in the way of her striving for independence. It’s no secret that the teen years are confusing for both adults and the teens themselves. Kids, especially in high school, are caught smack in the middle of a quest for who they are and what they will become… apart from their parents. And while we, as good parents, want to help them in that process, there are times when they don’t really want our help. Because it’s embarrassing. Because it means they still need Mommy and Daddy. Because they’re not ready to stand up against adversity yet. And that just isn’t very cool. So sometimes, we parents have to be uncool in order to help our kids. (And secretly many of them thank us for it.)

In the past few days the question of the role of parents in young adult fiction has been brought to my attention. A lot of authors these days are, in one way or another, intentionally removing parents from the character’s options for how to deal with their conflicts or dilemmas. Either by choice or circumstance, the young characters do not turn to their parents for help. Some adults reviewing YA fiction aren’t happy about this writing tactic. (Because, after all, they’re likely to be the good parents who take interest in their teens’ reading materials!)

To understand the situation, I believe it’s helpful to look at what makes for a good family relationship, and what makes for good fiction that’s going to appeal to teens.

When our teens are in some kind of trouble, we obviously want them to bring their problems to us so we can help. I’ve told my daughter over and over that I want her to come and talk to me when she’s got questions or problems. I’m always here to listen and help. But the truth is, she didn’t always do that. And there have been a few times when she delayed coming to me, because she thought I would be angry at her for some mistake she had made. This is a typical impulse for most teens, even for those whose parents might not be the fly-off-the-handle type. Getting in trouble with the parents is B-A-D!

And, in reality, there are parents out there who would respond in anger and not be so willing to listen and help. There are parents who are too busy or stressed to spend heart-to-heart talk time with their kids. There are parents who are too mired in their own problems to deal wisely with their children’s issues—especially those my-life-is-over teen dramas that are so easy for adults (who are so over it) and the media to make fun of. And there are parents who just aren’t there at all. The ideal scenario of a child coming to his or her mom or dad for advice just doesn’t happen for some teens. Sometimes, the parent IS the problem.

A lot of YA authors have used this far-from-ideal scenario as a primary conflict or a motivating factor in their writing. As they should. Because their writing might be exactly what a reader needs to see in order to cope with a similar situation in her life.

But then there’s the question of what makes for good teen fiction. I’m afraid it isn’t always what makes for good teen fiction to be enjoyed and fully endorsed by parents! The teenage characters in these stories are faced with seemingly insurmountable problems (at least as far as the character knows) and the last thing they think about is going to their parents. Why construct the story this way? Because going to the parents might not allow the character to learn and grow from his mistakes. In writing we use what is called a “character arc.” That is, the character must change in some way from the beginning to the end of the story. This is especially prevalent in young adult fiction, which is often called “coming of age” fiction. The character overcomes the challenges before him through fits and starts, determination and doubt, hope and fear, and his life and who he is are changed by the outcome. If the author brings in another entity (parents, teachers, police) to solve the problem, then the lesson is diminished, perhaps not learned at all. In essence, it’s taking the easy way out.

Even in adult fiction, a story is much more interesting if the protagonist faces his nemesis head on than if he calls the police to let them deal with the bad guy. In reality, most of us would call the cops, because they’re the people best qualified to handle a threat. But in fiction… we want to see the protagonist become the hero and overcome the odds on his own.

With teens questioning who they are, what they’ll become, what life means and who they’re going to spend it, and why so-and-so would say such nasty things about them, they want to read about a protagonist who confronts those issues and becomes her own hero. They know the authority figures are there to help them, but reading about a character who wins, on his own, thrills them. It practically sings of “becoming.”

Thank you Diana for taking a few moments of your day to spend with us and our readers!!

Running Lean by Diana Sharples examines the relationship between two teens- one young man grieving after the loss of a loved one in Afganistan and a young woman secretly suffering from an eating disorder. This book moves readers past the typical “boy meets girl” story of falling in love, and examines what it’s like for teens dealing with being in a relationship and coping with (often serious) real-life issues.

Diane T. Ashley

Aaron McCarver

authors of: “The Song of the River” series

So without further ado, welcome Diane and Aaron!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about yourselves?

Aaron was born in Dunlap, Tennessee, which is about 40 miles northwest of Chattanooga. He grew up in the nearby mountain community of Cagle, attending the Sequatchie County school system in Dunlap. He came to Mississippi in 1983 to attend Wesley College, which was located in Florence, Mississippi, and never left. He received a master’s degree in English from Mississippi College in 1990. He is an English professor at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi.

Diane grew up in a small town half an hour north of Jackson. Many, many years ago she graduated from Canton Academy. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi, followed several years later by a Master of Arts from Mississippi State University. She recently retired from the Mississippi House of Representatives after 28 years of service and now plans to write full time.

They are the co-authors of six historical novels with Heartsong, as well as a recently completed three-book historical series, Song of the River, with Barbour Publishing. Their historical novella in the bestselling collection, A Biltmore Christmas, won the 2012 Carol Award.

MBA&M:What was your inspiration behind “The Song of the River” series?

For many years Aaron has had the idea to write a series of stories that captured the heyday of steamboats in the United States. In God’s timing the idea, plots and interested publishers came together. The result is The Song of the River series.

MBA&M: Do you feel readers should read this series in order, with “Jasmine” being the third in the series? Or are they stand alone titles?

Although several of the characters appear in all three of the books, each book stands alone. However, if you want to read about the history of steamboats chronologically, you’ll want to start with Lily in the years prior to the Civil War. Then you can read about Camellia’s trials during the Civil War years and finally finish with Jasmine in the days after the war.

MBA&M: In “Jasmine” we see, Jasmine runs away from so many things. What was your inspiration for her singing on a Showboat?

Each of the Anderson girls is headstrong but Jasmine was always interested in drama. She fell in love with the stage during a childhood visit to New Orleans and grew up wanting to experience the glamor and excitement of that lifestyle for herself.

MBA&M: What compelled you to use Mississippi as your story setting?

The Mississippi River is a setting that has fascinated both of us, especially during the years of steamboat travel. We wanted our readers to experience the opulence, magnificence and hardships of life on the mighty Mississippi.

MBA&M: Where either of you fascainted my Riverboats as a child,or just your imaginations working to write this story of “Jasmine”?

Who wasn’t captivated by Mark Twain’s stories of life on the Mississippi or the musical Showboat? Of course we do a lot of research before writing our books and even while we are writing to double-check our historical facts. By the time we finish a three-book series we know a great deal about the time period.

MBA&M: If you could pick a character from out of “The Song of the River” series, which character and why?

One of the things we wanted to show is how Christians deal with living in this world while still following Jesus. Jasmine has a dream to become a famous actress. We wanted her to realize that dream and use her dramatic talents to accomplish God’s purpose for her life.

MBA&M: Who was your least favorite character to write about and what where in  challenges in writing this story?

Writing children in a way that is appropriate for their ages is always difficult, especially since neither of us has children.

MBA&M: How challenging is it to write with another author?

We find it very easy to write together and wonder how other authors manage alone.

MBA&M: Let’s talk about secondary characters, they are usually neglected, but help carry the story. Please tell us a little about at least of the your secondary characters in “Jasmine”?

One of our favorite characters is Clementine, a young woman who is the seamstress on the showboat. She is so practical, ethical and warm-hearted although she is not a Christian. We would love to write a book in the future in which she is the heroine.

MBA&M: What was your favorite scene in  “Jasmine” and why?

One of our favorite scenes has to do with the issue of abortion, a subject near to our hearts. We felt it was God’s inspiration that led us to find a way to deal with it during the 1870s.

MBA&M: Please tell our readers how to connect with you and where they may purchase “Jasmine”?

You can contact us through the wonderful people at Barbour Publishing. The address is P.O. Box 719,
1810 Barbour Drive, Uhrichsville, OH 44683.

Their website is www.barbourbooks.com

MBA&M:Do either of you have anything you would wish to add today?

Thanks so much for having us, April. We’re working hard on our next historical series and hope to have exciting news about it soon.

How exciting for the both of you! Thank you both for taking us on your grand adventure during the heyday of steamboats and beyone!

Final Book of the Enthralling Song of the River Series

Uhrichsville, OH — This July, return to Mississippi where riverboat maiden Jasmine Anderson forsakes her past in search of fame in Jasmine, book three of the Song of the River series by Diane T. Ashley and Aaron McCarver.

A Journey into the Unknown

Mona Hodgson

 Covered wagon First Step

What would drive people from the familiar into the unknown? What would cause men to venture into a harsh wilderness, leaving their families behind? Or uprooting them?

For the Israelites, it was captivity in Egypt and the hope of freedom in a Promised Land that drove them from the prison they’d known for generations.

In the early 1840s, emigrants from the Eastern United States began traveling overland by covered wagon to escape grief, persecution, and poverty. Driven by desperation, curiosity, and greed, several hundred thousand people sold the bulk of their possessions, bid family and friends adieu, provisioned a covered wagon and took bold or timid steps toward what they hoped would be their promised land. A land of boundless opportunity. They’d heard stories of the wide open spaces, big forests, rivers and streams teeming with fish, flowers that bloomed all year, and abundant land for farming. Developing cities ripe for businesses. Gold, silver, and copper sat ready to be mined.

That is the backdrop for the Boone’s Lick Wagon Train Company in Prairie Song, Book 1 in my new Hearts Seeking Home series. The women in the Saint Charles Quilting Circle—from The Quilted Heart novellas—have been devastated by the War Between the States. From the youngest to the oldest, they’ve lost brothers, sons, husbands, and fathers. Not only were their plans changed, they were crushed under the heavy weight of endings, some gradual and some abrupt. But their faith is anchored in a faithful God. Fresh starts await them on the horizon.

Carrying their friendships in their hearts, some of the women will travel west to rebuild their lives, in search of home.

Life is a journey. You and I navigate winding roads in our family life, friendships, schooling, work place, communities—in all our spheres of influence. And any journey carries with it a process of discovery in which we can learn in experience who we are in God’s heart, our true home, and what we’re capable of in His strength. We all find ourselves stepping out into the unknown. Taking leaps of faith. Or, most times, tentative steps into a new normal.

I write journey stories because exploring unwelcomed change and struggles tempered by God’s grace reminds us that we are not alone in our passages. Each of my historical novels and novellas feature a focus verse. For Prairie Song, its Joshua 1:9.

Have I not commanded thee?

Be strong, and of a good courage;

be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed:

for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. (KJV)

God was there…on the road with the Israelites. In their hardships, failures, and triumphs…providing for them.

Their job? To trust the Lord their God and to follow His lead.

Join Anna, Caroline, Lorelei and the others in their goodbyes in Saint Charles, Missouri, and on the trail as they make those discoveries for themselves.

Thanks for taking part in my journey. I hope you’ll connect with me on my website (www.monahodgson.com), blog, Facebook, and/or Pinterest.

God bless~

Thank you Mona, for spending time with us today! What an amazing journey! Love the covered wagon picture. Thanks so much!

Will traveling west prove to be their “promised land,” or did they leave it behind?

Colorado Springs, Colo. – In the first novel in the Hearts Seeking Home historical romance series, Prairie Song (WaterBrook Press, 8/6/2013), popular western author Mona Hodgson moves an endearing, ensemble cast from St. Charles, Missouri into the wagon train life headed for Sacramento, California.

People in the Eastern half of the United States suffered captivity in the throes of a civil war during the 1860s. Like the Israelites, a tight-knit group of survivors embark on a journey full of promise and fraught with peril.

Though it means saying good-bye to the beloved friends of her quilting circle, Anna Goben is certain that she needs to enlist her family in the Boone’s Lick Company Wagon Train. The loss of her beloved brother in the Civil War has paralyzed her mother and grandfather in a malaise of grief and depression, and Anna hopes a fresh start in the Promised Land of California will prove revitalizing to them all, especially to her mother who has turned to alcohol for solace.

Caleb Reger has his own reasons for keeping his past a secret as he enlists as a trail hand to help lead a wagon train west, but the load of regret proves to be a heavy burden to cling to when he encounters Anna traveling alongside him.

As Anna and Caleb’s mutual attraction grows, the darkness of both of their pasts threatens to tear them asunder. Can they both learn to let go of what they cannot control and instead trust in God’s grace and forgiveness?

“My Thoughts” is on our sister site:

Thank you everyone and again, if you feel up it the challenge, please spread the word about this amazing author and her amazing story of love, sacrifice, healing and faith.

MBA&M: What is your inspiration for writing both suspense, and children’s titles?

LINDA: My inspiration for all of my books is God.  Beaufort Betrayal, my first novel, was a vision which I experienced nightly for a few years.  It reached the point where I could not go to sleep without thinking about it.  In my thoughts, I saw a young woman walking down the street.  It was not me.  She was troubled but not harmed.  I recognized the place as Beaufort, N.C. where I have sailed often.  As she walked down the street, she feverishly hunted for signs that she might recognize for she was suffering from amnesia.  Then, she saw one of the beautiful old homes across the street.  As she searched for familiarity, she saw a young man on the balcony, waving to her.  Her heart was singing because she realized that someone recognized her.  As he ran to greet her, he ushered her inside the home.  What was about to happen to her?  So the story began.  One night, I finally prayed.  Asking God for guidance, I knew that I was suppose to write a book.  My first Mystery/Thriller began and I suddenly found myself in a new role as author.

MBA&M: How hard is it  to write both genres?

MBA&M: It is not difficult at all.  My problem is that the thoughts occur so rapidly that I find it difficult to keep up.
MBA&M: Who do you credit your love of writing to?

LINDA: Again, I must say God.  I never even entertained the idea of writing.  Without the vision which launched Beaufort Betrayal, I would never have written.
MBA&M:  What do you think the most  important quality of an author?
LINDA: I think the most important quality of an author is honesty.  To desire to tell a story that will actually benefit someone instead of junk is an honest approach to writing.  That is my desire.  If just one of my books helps someone, then the process was worth any fatigue or discomfort which I may have experienced.
MBA&M:  You seem to enjoy a variety of stories, which is by far your favorite to write? Why?
LINDA: Beaufort Betrayal was my favorite because it was my first experience of displaying my soul, so to speak. Writing reminds me of an artist with a painting.  So much time goes into creating something that you think is beautiful.  Then the criticism begins.  It can be daunting.
MBA&M:  What is the most exciting part of writing in your opinion?
LINDA: The most exciting part is the final product.  So often, when I go back to read it, it is unfamiliar to me; almost as if I never wrote it.  It is amazing.  Writing produces such happiness for me.  Each book: Beaufort Betrayal,Rosemary Beach, Will He?, and Dusty the Island Dog is a great source of pride and disbelief that with God’s help. I was able to create something that I find beautiful.  I am indeed blessed.

Thanks, Linda, for visiting with us and our readers today! We wish you the best with your future endeavors!

MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about Tracy Kauffman?
TRACY: I am from North Alabama.  I have a type A personality which means I am too high strung to sit still.  I  work a nursing job part time when needed and the rest of the time I am either writing, reading, marketing or hanging out with my family.
MB&AM: What is the allure of YA romance?
TRACY: Who doesn’t love romance and well I thought this would be a great genre to write for.
MBA&M: What drawn you to write “Southern Attraction”?
TRACY: I like stories about the south and use them in most of my writing.  So I had already wrote one called Southern Adventures, so this one being romance, the name came natural.
MBA&M: After seeing the destruction of tornadoes that torn through Alabama in 2011,can you tell our readers some of the devastation you seen, and how that influenced you to write “Southern  Attraction”?
TRACY: My town was not directly hit but all the towns around us were.  Power lines were down for a week.  Do you know how hard it is to cook without power.  How drinking water doesn’t taste as good not being cold.  No power no refrigerator.  Walmart had to close their doors.  Food was spoiled.  Taking ice cold baths wasn’t fun either.  As a nurse, I worked at a hospital where I helped out in the ER.  I had never worked in the ER before so it made it even more crazy.  Had to hold pressure on wounds.  People couldn’t find family members.  Kids without parents, parents without kids.  People trapped in their basements.  One lady had her chimney set upon her and the rest of the house was gone.  Houses were wiped clean of their cement foundations.  Whole towns completely wiped off the map.  A huge tornado that was over a mile wide just kept going and going and going  destroying everything in its path.  People were finding pictures of other people and putting them on facebook so they would have something to remember their past by.  There is so much more I can say but it would take a while.

MBA&M: What three words would you use to describe “Southern Attraction”?
TRACY: romance, discovery, grief
MBA&M: What author do you feel influenced your writing the most?
TRACY: I get asked this a lot.  There are so many to name.  Writers I grew up reading were Mark Twain, William Shakespeare, Judy Blume, Lewis Carroll, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens etc… They all influenced me.
MBA&M: Who do you credit your love of  writing to?Why?
TRACY: I guess I take after my dad.  He loves books and I guess that is why I love writing, because of my love for books.
MBA&M: What was the hardest scene to write in “Southern  Attraction”?
TRACY: The tornado scene.  It brought back memories and I wanted to let the reader feel what I felt.
MBA&M: I has been a pleasure to have you visit with us and our readers today. Tracy, please tell our readers where to connect with you and where they may purchase “Southern Attraction”?

Visiting another century…not the summer vacation Abby had planned.

Those who have read Time and Again and Unclaimed Legacy, the first two books in the young adult time-travel trilogy, know that Abby Thomas, is a college student on a summer service project with 11-year-old Merri. And you know that the summer is not going the way Abby had expected—but in a good way. For one thing, she meets a very nice guy named John Roberts. And for another, she discovers a strange computer program called Beautiful House that lets her fast-forward and rewind life. Not her own, of course, but those of the people who lived in Merri’s old house. And the Old Dears’ old house, and…well, any old house.

And now their computer program is starting to attract attention.

Since the program worked so well for the Old Dears’ family tree project, Abby’s college roommate Kate hopes it will help her find out more about her ancestor Ned Greenfield. And Kate’s fiancé Ryan thinks the program has lucrative commercial potential.

Abby and John reluctantly agree to help Kate, but only on the condition that she and Ryan promise to keep the program a secret, because if it fell into the wrong hands…well, no one wants Big Brother invading their privacy.

The two couples take a trip to the tiny town of Equality, set in the hills of southern Illinois and the breath-taking Shawnee National Forest. According to Kate’s research, Ned Greenfield was born there at a place called Hickory Hill.

The mayor, police chief, and townspeople are hospitable and helpful—until the topic of Hickory Hill comes up. They seem determined to keep them away, telling them, “There’s nothing there for you to see.”

Eventually they find Hickory Hill on their own—both the mansion and the lonely hill it sits upon. Built in 1834, Hickory Hill stands sentinel over Half Moon Salt Mine where the original owner John Granger accumulated his blood-tainted fortune.

Abby and her friends meet Miss Granger, Hickory Hill’s current eccentric owner, and they eventually get the chance to time-surf there. Their shocking discovery on the third floor concerning Kate’s ancestor Ned Greenfield is almost too much to bear. What they learn sends them racing to the opposite end of the state to find the missing link in Kate’s family tree. And there they are reminded that God is in the business of redemption—that one day he’ll make all things new.
